The Heartland Corridor Clearance Improvement Project is part of a regional Public-Private initiative to allow double stack container trains a direct route from the Port of Norfolk through Virginia, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and into Central Ohio. The project involves clearance improvements to twenty-eight tunnels, twenty-one of which require structural modification. With construction of the first Package of tunnels just underway at press time, this paper summarizes the program implementation from design through the initial stages of construction.

Chemistry of Iron Solution IRON is much more soluble in the ferrous than in the ferric form. Where, as in the case of the ferrous silicates and the sulphides, the iron is already in the ferrous form, it may go at once into solution and be removed, upon the breaking down of the parent rock. If in the ferric form, it must first be reduced; usually by the decay of organic matter, the demand of the decaying carbonaceous matter for oxygen being so great that the latter is abstracted from the ferric compounds and the iron is thereby reduced and rendered' soluble. The iron may go into solution as the sulphate, or in the presence of excess CO2 as ferrous carbonate. It is probably soluble as salts of the organic acids.1 Recent work indicates that these are important in the formation of bog ores.2 There is considerable variety of opinion concerning the behavior of these organic compounds.3 The secretions about the roots of plants and trees also cause the solution and removal of iron and a consequent bleaching of the soil.4 While the matter is not yet well understood, we can probably say definitely that the so-called organic acids are a group of colloids which possess slightly acid properties, and the salts of which are partly soluble

The problem of production scheduling is sufficiently complex to negate the use of many conventional optimising techniques as there are numerous and diverse factors that must be considered when trying to produce an optimal schedule. These factors include: grade distribution, orebody geometry, production rate capacity, processing constraints and market price of the minerals amongst a variety of others. In addition it may be observed that many of these factors incorporate a degree of uncertainty and any schedule produced must inevitably consider risk as a primary consideration. The very nature of the problem has limited the use of conventional optimisers. Genetic algorithms use methods based upon evolution and natural selection to produce `optimal' solutions to complex system problems. They are extremely flexible and robust in their nature and it is these characteristics that are important in this particular problem domain. A particular strength of the genetic optimisation approach is the ability to handle the multiple and non-linear constraints that are typically encountered in mine scheduling problems. This paper concentrates on the development of a prototype application of a genetic algorithm to the problem of scheduling the output from multiple production points in an underground mining operation. In particular it.describes a system (GO-SCHED) that can be customised to handle a wide variety of underground scheduling problems. GO-SCHED, a Windows-based system, can interface with a variety of databases and spreadsheets for data input and output and provides a simple intuitive approach to the solution of the scheduling problem.

South Africa is the world's largest producer of gold. The survival of its gold mining industry is dependent, to a large extent, on the successful implementation of new mining technology which reduces the operating costs. Gold mines of the country have a record of a high operational cost per tonne of rock excavated. The geology of the gold-bearing rock, in addition to the mining depth and the gold recoverable grade, profoundly affect the profitability of the industry. Among the other mining operations, drilling and blasting take a fair share of the mining cost. It is therefore proper to implement a dynamic approach of technological review aimed at combating the escalation of mining costs. Over the years, the industry has moved away from labour intensive activities. Mechanised operations are introduced where possible. Management techniques are oriented more towards better utilisation of human resources and machinery so as to enhance productivity in the stopes. This paper addresses the issue with particular reference to blasting operations in the stopes of deep gold mines. It reviews the conventional drilling and blasting techniques. It outlines some innovative changes brought about in the course of recent years with the aim of optimising productivity and the stope efficiency in particular. It focusses on the peculiarities of the blasting technology in deep mines. It discusses the issue of interaction between the high stress fields underground and the blasting generated stresses on rock fragmentation, as well as their impact on the remaining excavations. It anticipates the concept of the new technology of selective blasting in stoping. Finally it puts forward the crucial role played by management of the human factor underground.

IT will be recalled that the first professor of metallurgy in the United States, appointed in 1855, never really gave any instruction in metallurgy and gradually turned into a professor of mineralogy. Metallurgy was included with mining in the early curricula, two students who took the B.S. in mining engineering from the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania in 1863 wrote their graduation theses on the metallurgy of copper and zinc, respectively. Even after Columbia School of Mines established, in 1868, a separate curriculum leading to the Ph.B. degree in metallurgy, very few students elected it,* preferring to take the mining degree, since they received in its curriculum nearly all the metallurgical instruction they would have in the metallurgical curriculum. For many years a large proportion of the men who attained prominence in metallurgical enterprises had taken mining rather than metallurgical degrees. METALLURGY Clifton Sorby's study of thin sections of rocks under the micro- scope, beginning in 1850, and its subsequent development by Zirkel and others, had made microscopic petrography a recognized department of, geological research as early as 1873. It was inevitable that the idea of studying polished metal surfaces under the microscope by reflected instead of transmitted light would occur to investigators. Sorby himself did it in 1864, and Adolph Martens and Floris Osmond may be especially named ', among the many European workers who, by the late eighties, had so developed the necessary techniques that they were able to photograph polished metal surfaces at magnifications as high

The process, realized in. the Kivcet furnace, can convert continuously lead concentrates, residues and secondary lead bearing materials into a lead bullion free of sulphur and a discardable slag. The lead recovery can be up to 99%. The long experience of about three years at Portovesme demonstrates the capability of the furnace to smelt a very. high range of lead raws without interruption of the operation. The operating costs are very competitive in comparison to the traditional technology. The work place and environment are clean and new tight regulations for the? hygiene control are met. The Kivcet furnace can be considered as consisting of three parts (reaction shaft, waste gas shaft and electro-furnace) connected with a common hearth. The technical basis of the furnace construction is the application of a number of design elements .which have mostly been used before in designs of industrial furnaces, such as open hearth furnace, refining furnace and other furnaces dealing with liquid meta1s. Refractory wear in the reaction shaft with typical pattern from watercooling soon has been stabilized and since maintained. No deformation of the furnace shell and no leakage of metal or s:l:ag through the bottom is? appeared after three years' operations.

A study of the feasibility of using acoustic signals to detect discontinuities ahead of excavation has shown that reflecting interfaces in a homogeneous rock can be easily identified. Moreover, discontinuity interfaces in a very complex field site (where the rock face was weathered, was full of jointed rocks, and had a destressed zone running along the mine walls) could be identified with a reasonable level of confidence, using a cross-correlation technique for signal processing. The results of this study go a long way toward proving the feasibility of the technique. However, further development work is needed to optimize an operating system in a hard rock environment where boring machines are used for excavation.

A scraper-based block cave method has been successfully applied to extract the Lower orebody at Nchanga since the 1950s. Since inception, scraper drifts and service ways have been supported using steel arch sets fabricated to a specific design from high strength manganese steel To reduce costs and to improve productivity, trials commenced in 2002 using fibre reinforced shotcrete as an alternative support method. One of the areas, the 2420 8E 1C trial drift, was subjected to abutment loading for several months prior to undercutting and cave mining. Shotcrete installed exhibited minor cracking shortly after application but very little deterioration thereafter. Following the success of the trial, the application of fibre-reinforced shotcrete was extended to other drifts. This paper describes the application of fibre-reinforced shotcreteat Nchanga and outlines design and quality assurance methods employed.

Lightning Ridge, Australia, is the largest opal producing area in the world. Most opal is mined from shallow underground mines by individuals or small partnerships with the industry having been protected from large-scale development to date. The safety performance of opal mining has lagged both general mining industry standards and community expectations. The application of geotechnical analysis to the opal fields has the potential to considerably reduce injuries and fatalities. With consideration of the local culture, preliminary geotechnical analysis has been applied to some current methods of work utilised at Lightning Ridge. Practical solutions have been advocated and are presented in this paper. Improvements to safety generated by these practical solutions indicate that further geotechnical research at Lightning Ridge is warranted and would be beneficial.

THIS paper gives observations on ground movement and subsidence resulting from pillar drawing in the Lick Run section of Montour No. 10 mine of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. adjacent to solid coal owned by the U. S. Bureau of Mines at its Experimental mine in Snowden Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The investigation was planned by George S. Rice, chief mining engineer of the Bureau, who arranged the necessary cooperation with Dr. L. E. Young, vice president of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. Engineers of that company placed permanent monuments on the surface to establish the boundaries of the coal owned by the Bureau and to furnish fixed points to which all levels were referred. Engineers of the Experimental mine staff then covered the ground under observation with a checkerwork of monuments made of oak pegs set into the ground at 50-ft. intervals in two directions at right angles to each other. The level of these pegs was determined first from Dec. 16 to 30, 1929; again from May 25 to June 5, 1930, and finally from July 7 to 15, 1931. Observations were then discontinued because work had been stopped temporarily in this part on Montour 10 mine.

Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the interior. The fir t report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report, covering 1,679 simples, represents the products of US companies plus those from the Pacific coast, witch were averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and arc published exactly as they were submitted. The three groups of data on samples of regular, premium, and third-grade gasolines are averred separately. the, number of samples and brands representing each grade are as follows: Regular price, 869 samples, 76 brands; premium price, 452 sample, 45 brands; third-grade 358 samples, 52 brands. In this report the same marketing districts are retained as were used in the preceding report, and as for as possible the actual sampling points in each area are indicated on table 1.]

INTRODUCTION The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is developing chemical explosive excavation as a construction technique for use on Civil Works projects. Large chemical charges are being used in multiple charge arrays in a variety of media and topographic situations to achieve actual construction projects. The target is the development of chemical and nuclear explosive excavation as an accepted cost-competitive construction technique. Military research using explosive excavation is also being conducted to apply this technique to military engineering for combat purposes and to military construction. The information gained from both the civil and military research is integrated into the overall development of explosive excavation. This research and development work is being conducted under the auspices of the U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station Explosive Excavation Research Laboratory (EERL) located at Livermore, California. This organization was formed in 1962 as the Nuclear Cratering Group (NCG) to carry out the Corps of Engineers (OCE) portion of a joint agreement with the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to develop nuclear explosives for construction purposes. The AEC, through the Plowshare Division of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory at Livermore, California, has been responsible for developing nuclear explosives, conducting nuclear cratering experiments, developing nuclear safety information, and developing methods for predicting the shape of the craters. Using a nitrided fused-iron catalyst, the Bureau of Mines investigated the Fischer-Tropsch reaction in the oil-circulation process. The nitrided iron was quite stable and permitted the longest run obtained thus far in the oil-circulation process without the need for reactivating the catalyst--3,700 hours of operation. The effects of several operating variables--temperature, pressure, gas-recycle ratio, space velocity, synthesis-gas composition, and synthesis with and without reflux of oil to the reactor--on the production of oxygenates were studied. The importance of removing reflux oil and of high gas recycle in increasing the oxygenate content was shown. A finished gasoline containing 28 percent by weight alcohols was produced. The research octane number (RON) was 92.9 clear, increasing to 98.5 with the addition of one milliliter of tetraethyl lead (TEL). INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has been engaged since 1944 in a research and development program on the synthesis of gasoline from coal. Gasification of coal with steam and oxygen to yield a "synthesis gas"--a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen--is being investigated at Morgantown, W. Va., and the synthesis of gasoline by catalytically reacting carbon monoxide and hydrogen over iron by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction is being investigated at Bruceton, Pa.

Numerous studies have shown the potential of air rate profiling to significantly improve the flotation performance of a bank of cells. To date many profiles have been implemented; balanced, increasing, decreasing and combinations of these. Previous work has typically shown using an increasing air rate profile, where the air rates are increased proportionally to each cell down the bank, yields a higher grade for a given recovery compared to other profiles. Air rate profiling can then be thought of as having two distinct components; determining the correct distribution of a given volume of air and, perhaps more importantly determining the correct total volume of air to add to the bank. To date no method for this second component has been established. In an alternative technique the air rate to each cell is adjusted in order to optimise the air recovery from that cell. Air recovery is the fraction of the inlet air which overflows the weir of a cell as unburst bubbles. The peak in air recovery (PAR) is a robust measurement that indicates optimal performance for the operating conditions in the cell, and sets the PAR air rate. By doing this for each cell in the bank, the optimal total air rate to the bank and the optimal distribution of that air can be simultaneously determined. In this study plant trials evaluated different air rate profiles, and profiling based on PAR. The total air rates to the bank for all profiles tested were approximately equal, allowing direct comparison. The results showed that the highest cumulative mineral recovery was achieved by operating at air rates which gave the PAR for each cell down the bank. Different distributions of the same total air rate to the bank gave the same cumulative upgrade ratio, but lower cumulative recoveries. In this study, the increase in cumulative mineral recovery, at the same upgrade ratio, was more than 33%. Peak in air recovery (PAR) based optimisation of air rates to banks of cells and to the individual cells has been shown to significantly improve flotation performance as it simultaneously determines the optimal air rate to the bank, and the optimal distribution of that air.

These mines, which belong to the Burma Corporation, Ltd., formerly a London company now incorporated in Rangoon, Burma, are situated in the semi-independent state of Tawng-Peng, one of the small divisions comprising the northern Shan states and erroneously known as part of Upper Burma. Bawdwin is approximately 23' 6' N. latitude and 97" 20' E. longitude, 450 miles north of Rangoon, 169 miles northcast of Mandalay and 50 miles south and west of the Province of Yunnan, China (see Fig. 1). Although the mines were worked by the Chinese during the Ming Dynasty, 1412 A. D., the most extensive operations took place between 1796 and 1851, when the mines contributed largely to the silver market of China. During the reign of Tung Chik, 1868 A. D., they were abandoned partly because of the Mohammedan rebellion in Yunnan, which made life and property insecure, but largely because of the difficulty of operating the mines on account of water and poor ventilation. Since that time practically nothing was done, although the Burmese kings are said to have made several sporadic attempts to work the mines, until 1891 when Europeans were attracted by the great slag dumps (assaying about 40 per cent. lead) which the Chinese had left after extracting the silver. After a railroad and smelter had been built and 200,000 to 300,000 tons of slag smelted for lead, exploration work was started and old workings cleaned out in order to locate the remnants of the orebody that it was supposed the Chinese had left. After two years of most discouraging work, the remains of a large orebody was discovered by the Dead Chinaman Tunnel or what is the 171-ft., or No. 2 level adit. California, with less than 7,000,000 people in 1940, and over 19,000,000 in 1966. In 5 1/2 years, (1960-65) the southerly 14 counties of California, which together comprise one-half the land area of our state, had an increase in population greater than Colorado, or Arkansas, or Oregon, or any one of 19 other states.

Over the past year or so, a number of mining companies have been meeting to examine the role of research in surface mining and, in particular, how to establish a collaborative research effort for the surface mining industry. A review has been completed which has identified the topics that are of interest to the surface mining companies for undertaking collaborative research. This has identified key subject areas such as Operations & Equipment; Maintenance; Environment & Reclamation; and Stability. Specific research projects for the initial research effort have been selected which include Wireless Data Communications, Analysis and Management; Application of GPS in Mining; and Tires for Heavy Haulers. In addition, attention has also been focussed on finding a suitable low cost, but effective, organization to coordinate and manage the collaborative research. The recently formed CONRAD Organization (Canadian Oilsands Network for Research and Development) appears to be a suitable candidate and discussions are ongoing with that group. This paper provides a summary of the review of surface mining research needs and of the status of the establishment of a collaborative research body for surface mining.
