The application of the geopolymerization of mine tailings as construction materials is hindered by the fact that conventional geopolymerization of mine tailings usually involves a large consumption of alkali, i.e., sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and a long curing time, because of the relatively low reactivity and the high Si/Al ratio of mine tailings when compared to other active resources such as fly ash and clay minerals. The present study is focused on efficiently activating mine tailings, reducing alkali consumption, decreasing curing time and improving compressive strength. We firstly investigate the temperature effect on the alkali activation of mine tailings during geopolymerization. Secondly, the impact of additives, i.e., calcium hydroxide and aluminium oxide, on the compressive strength of samples is studied. Thirdly, different forming pressures have been applied to remove excessive alkali and its impact on samples' strength has been investigated. The results show that a 40 MPa unconfined compressive strength (UCS) can be achieved with the geopolymerization samples after mine tailings are activated by sodium hydroxide at 170°C for 1 hour with the addition of calcium hydroxide and alkali dissolved aluminium oxide, further compressed with a 10 MPa forming pressure and finally cured at 90°C for 3 days. The findings of the present work provide a novel method for the geopolymerization of mine tailings as construction materials.

The United States is the world's leading producer of phosphate rock. In 1975 according to the US Bureau of Mines' statistics, 44.3 million tonnes (48.8 million st) of phosphate rock were produced in the United States, l which is 40.6% of the world's production.2 The major phosphate producing areas of the United States are located in [Fig. 1] and the production for 1975 is listed as follows: [ ] All of these areas produce phosphate from deposits which are of marine sedimentary origin. Occurrences of phosphate exist throughout the United States in numerous locations that are of both igneous and sedimentary origins. However, these other phosphate occurrences vary greatly in extent and economic significance. Georgia, South Carolina, California, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Iowa, Alabama, Kentucky, and Virginia are but a few of the states in which phosphate is thought or known to exist. The near future expansion will probably continue to be in, or near, existing producing areas, (i.e., Florida and North Carolina).

In many industries, the applications result in productivity improvement and energy savings. Plant specific examples include operating experience and benefits realized in sorting, blending and beneficiation processes. Instruments of the future not only measure specific parameters of the process and monitor its own health combined with self-corrective mechanics but also acts with intelligence to effect the quality of the process or regulate the primary apparatus.

A sedimentation method involving the use of the Palo-Travis apparatus was found satisfactory for rapid determination of the size distribution of coal particles ranging from 10 microns in diameter to those passing an 840-micron opening (20-mesh sieve), The method is most useful for comparing the size distributions of samples of pulverized coal where the actual size of the particles is not required and is applicable to sieve and subsieve sizes of a wide variety of coals and chars that can be wetted and are heavier than water. An analysis, including all calculations, can be completed in 1/2 to 10 hours, depending on the time required for the finely divided coal to settle. A typical analysis requires about an hour, making this a rapid, precise method for routine size-distribution analysis of powdered coals. When used with coal particles smaller than 400 microns, the method is precise within 15 microns for wide variations in test conditions and within 5 microns for identical test conditions. The precision decreases as particle size increases, becoming unsatisfactory for particles larger than 400 microns (40-mesh). For precision within 15 microns, the samples must be equal in weight. Greater precision is obtained with 4-gram samples, but samples as small as l gram may be used.

The early records of hydraulic elevator and bucket ladder dredging in the Clutha River system indicate the success of that era of alluvial gold mining in Otago. This paper briefly reviews parameters of depth and gold grade for alluvial operations. The application of dragline technology is proposed for the economic removal of overburden to target the deeper alluvial gold areas which remain in the Otago region.

Lime-based neutralisation has long been the remediation treatment of choice for acidic mine pit waters. While suited to the attenuation of acidity, lime-based neutralisation may be difficult to implement efficiently due to variation in quality and the partial loss of neutralisation efficiency due to armouring. Large volumes of gypsum-bearing sludge may also require mechanical dewatering and transfer to final voids prior to resumption of in-pit mining or closure. Thus, operational costs may be substantially higher than primary neutralisation alone. Lime production also results in large greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions.Hydrotalcites (HT) are a class of Mg-Al layered double hydroxide minerals with the composition Mg6Al2(CO3 )(OH)16.4H2O. A range of other divalent and trivalent cations may also readily substitute for Mg (eg Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn), Al (eg Fe, La, Ce) and metalloids/oxyanions (SeO42-, AsO43 -/CrO42 -, MnO4-) for CO3 into the hydrotalcite structure. A common feature of acid mine pit waters, often overlooked in assessment of potential remediation options, is the frequent predominance of divalent and trivalent cations as a consequence of partial decomposition of both ore and gangue minerals during in-pit wall rock leaching. Thus, given the presence of substantial divalent and trivalent cations in acidic mine pit waters, an opportunity exists to exploit and in effect work harmoniously with the prevailing pit water composition to form a polymetallic hydrotalcite.The utility of hydrotalcites in the remediation of acidic mine pit waters lies in their ability to incorporate a wide range of contaminants; instantaneous formation, often in a single step; simple post-treatment solute composition; rapid settling; low sludge volume; and the potential to form ore-grade precipitates potentially amendable to reprocessing to (partially) recover remediation costs. Examples of hydrotalcite formation as a method to remediate contaminated acidic mine pit waters at laboratory-scale to full-scale will be presented.CITATION:Douglas, G B, 2015. Whither lime? This test was described in a privately circulated First Progress Report on Slacking Characteristics of Coal, by A. C. Fieldner and W. A. Selvig, May 1, 1928. The test was described in detail in U. S. Bureau of Mines Report of Investigation 3055, in November, 1930,1 The test, in brief, is conducted as follows: A sample of freshly mined coal consisting of 18 to 25 pieces approximating 1 1/4 cubes, and weighing 500 to 600 grams, is taken for the test. The sample is subjected to a "blank sieving" of carefully regulated degree, on an 8-in. circular sieve with 0.263-in. square openings, and the undersize and oversize weighed. The oversize is placed on a sheet-iron pan and dried for about 24 hr. in an A.S.T.M. air-drying oven maintained at 30" to 35" C. through which a current of warm air is drawn. The sample is then cooled to room temperature and immersed for one hour in water at the same temperature. The water is then drained off, the sample dried for 24 hr. as before, cooled, sieved as before, and the oversize and undersize weighed. The percentage weight of the undersize is calculated and reported as the first cycle loss. This loss, corrected by subtracting the percentage loss in the blank sieving, is termed the slacking index. The sample may be subjected to further cycles of wetting, draining, air-drying, sieving and weighing. In a letter (August, 1932) W. A. Selvig approved making the blank sieving on a duplicate sample, rather than on the sample used for the test, where sufficient coal was available. This method is now employed in these laboratories. The accelerated weathering test has been employed in the laboratories of the Research Council of Alberta, at Edmonton, since 1928, but not found entirely satisfactory as repeat determinations with samples taken from the same or adjacent mines frequently showed serious differences. Differences must be expected as the coal may vary in the seam, and the selection of a typical set of lumps approximating 1 1/4-in. cubes

"Recycling of used aluminum beverage cans(UBCs) is one of the important issues for aluminum manufacturer presently. The direct re-melting of UBCs shows two problems. One is a reduction in molten aluminum recovery and the other is a contamination of other metals such as Ti and Fe from paints. Both problems are caused by paints coated on the surfaces of aluminum cans. Removal technique of the paints, therefore, has been required. Although roasting and shot blast techniques have been developed, both were not successful in removing the paints effectively. A swell-peeling method has been applied to remove them using a methylene chloride solution with acids and it works very well. Small laboratory scale tests have been carried out to develop the commercial process and clarify the mechanism of the swell-peeling method in the present study.When the surface area of UBC is more than 10 cm2, peeling time is independent of the surface area, about 60 seconds, because swelling phenomenon is controlled by the penetration of the liquid through the fine pits on the surface of the paint. This is good for a commercial process. Peeling takes place when the swelling force generated by methylene chloride exceeds the adhesion force between the film and the surface of aluminum, that is weakened by the coexisting acid, especially halogenated acetic acid."

The importance of the pressing operation in the forming of articles by powder metallurgy depends to a great extent on the type of product to be made. While in some few cases the pressing is merely a means of compacting loose powder particles into a solid mass preliminary to a sintering treatment, in most applications it constitutes a molding operation with the purpose of shaping the raw material in powder form into a certain predetermined, accurately defined part not altered in shape by subsequent sintering. In still other cases, no pressing at all but sintering in molds gives useful articles. A limited number of products are made by the simultaneous application of pressure and heat. The factors that control the product of the pressing operation are raw material, lubricant, type, size and shape of die and compact, magnitude and time of application of pressure, as well as temperature of pressing. All such factors need to be controlled; yet, depending on the function of the pressing operation, greater emphasis may be placed on processing factors other than the pressing operation. In any complete discussion of pressing, subsequent sintering cannot be disregarded. For the sake of brevity, the present paper has been limited to the mechanics of pressing and only occasionally refers to sintering. For the same reason, hot-pressing has been omitted as beyond the scope of this paper In any survey of the literature on the pressing of metal powders, the 1938 paper of Balshinl on the theory of the process of pressing deserves mention. The first attempts at an interpretation of pressing phenomena were made by Balshin' and RakovskL2 The experimental results of both are of great interest. Since the experimental results are not described, the work was repeated, using our own interpretation of the possible techniques, and is reported in the following pages. The basic theory of Balshin,' based on a hydro-dynamic analogy, however, leads to hut another way of plotting density and pres- , sure against height of a pressed compact. Since it does not give any new insight into the phenomena, nor account for the influence of side-wall friction, a discussion of the theory has been omitted from this paper. Density Gradients in Compacts The process of pressing metal powders in a die (disregarding for this consideration the powder filling and ejection operations) may be divided into three phases: (I) packing, (2) elastic and plastic deformation, (3) cold-working with or without fragmentation. A study of the rate of dissolution of molybdenite (MoS2) in alkaline solution was carried out under carefully controlled conditions. Effects of temperature, oxygen over-pressure, and KOH concentration were evaluated. Studies were made in the temperature range 100°C to 175°C and in the pressure range 0 to 700 psia of oxygen. Under these conditions molybdenite was found to leach according to a linear mechanism. Both oxygen over-pressure and KOH concentration were found to control the rate of leaching. The mechanism has been explained in terms of adsorption of oxygen at the molybdenite surface followed by configurational rearrangement of the adsorbed molecules. The hydroxyl ion dependency is believed to be diffusion-controlled. Laboratory batch studies have shown that molybdenite can be readily dissolved in alkaline solutions under moderate conditions of temperature and pressure. Commercial application of this process to the production of ferro-molybdenum and molybdenum chemicals is promising in view of the ease of dissolution of molybdenite and the relatively noncorrosive conditions involved in the process. HIGH temperature-high pressure techniques have long been used to great advantage in the organic chemical industry, the petroleum industry, and the paper industry. Only recently, however, have these methods been used to extract metals from their ores on a commercial scale. The Chemical Construction Corp., together with interested producers of nickel and cobalt, has done much to develop methods of producing nickel and cobalt powders by the use of high temperature-high pressure techniques.' The Howe Sound Co. is currently operating a plant near Salt Lake City in which the new Chemical Construction Corp. technique is applied to cobalt-arsenic sulfide concentrates. In this method the concentrates are leached in a dilute solution of sulfuric acid under air pressure at a high temperature. Near Edmonton, in Alberta, Canada, the Sherritt Gordon Co. is also using the new method in conjunction with its ammoniacal leach process.' National Lead Co., at Fredricktown, Mo., is operating a process similar to that of Howe Sound. In spite of the rapid growth of high temperature-high pressure hydrometallurgical processes, there has been very little work done on fundamental principles involved in this type of process. Conse- quently the literature lacks any significant data in this field. Oxidation of pyrite,3 phalerite,4 galena,5 and recently molybdenite" in alkaline solutions has been reported to some extent. This investigation was initiated, therefore, to broaden the application of high temperature-high pressure hydrometallurgy and also to contribute some insight into the basic mechanisms of oxidation in an aqueous medium under these conditions. In addition to the immediate consequences of these processes much valuable information remains to be learned about fundamental reactions when they are carried out at temperatures and pressures slightly higher than those normally encountered. Leaching of molybdenite by alkaline solutions under oxygen pressure has recently been reported in the Russian literature by E. S. Usataya,8 who found that leaching rate increased with an increase in the pH of the solution—the strongest effects being observed at a pH of 10—and also with an increase in temperature. Usataya also has reported the formation of a protective film on the surface of the molybdenite when the leaching solution was weakly alkaline, neutral, or acidic. He believes that this oxidation process explains the migration of Mo+ + in the oxidation zones of molybdenite ore deposits and the subsequent impoverishment of the ores. Equipment: The high temperature-high pressure reaction unit used in this work was especially designed for kinetic studies of this nature, emphasis being placed on accuracy of measurement and precision of control. As details of the unit's construction and operation have been discussed elsewhere,7 Only basic features and principles of operation will be discussed at this point.

With the advent of water-flooding into active commercial usage in half a dozen areas in the Mid-Continent, the process passes the experimental stage and joins other methods and processes now in use which have been found suitable in one oil field or another in securing a more profitable production than has existed heretofore. The use of the air-gas lift, acidization, pressure maintenance and repressuring have presented their problems in economics and engineering during their introduction and extended application. When a new field is discovered or attention is turned to an old producing area in which these methods have not been considered, it is to be expected that these problems again arise. While some information is available as to the results obtained by water-flooding in a few localities in the Mid-Continent, the extrapolation of the sand data on which the results are based, for even generalized use in other areas and fields in the region, is hazardous. It is precarious to assume that the same physical condition will obtain in a sand over more than small, special areas. This paper is concerned with a brief presentation of such data as are available to the authors on existing operations, a survey of the region and extent to which application of the method seems most likely to be made, an estimation of the crude reserve existing for such operations, suggestions as to the importance of core analysis in guarding against uncontrolled floods and its usefulness in predicting ultimate recoveries, and comment on some of the economic phases involved. These subjects, as concerned with water-flooding in the East (notably Bradford, Pennsylvania), have been discussed in detail in the literature and are generally well known. Especially is this true of discussions of the mechanical equipment and various lease layouts and development patterns for water-flooding.

Smallbore tunnels in urban environments often present more technical and managerial problems than major large diameter schemes carried out for transportion, water supply and hydro-electric facilities. The 1.8 km Bath scheme was designed for construction in tunnel using the pipe jacking system. Unforeseen ground conditions meant other techniques were needed during construction. The paper describes the problems encountered and how they were overcome.

I. The Lower Kittaning bed is the most important bed in Clarion County from the standpoint of present production, but the Clarion bed has the largest recoverable reserve. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minim thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 1,210 million short tons as of January 1, 1952. Of this total, 790 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and mare thick. Areas in some beds were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too wager for ding an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, they should be added to the total estimated reserves.

One of the seemingly eternal problems with which we are frequently faced is that of providing adequate and economical warehousing facilities to store large quantities of bulk product. Seasonal consumption, transportation, marketing, and other factors very often dictate extensive product warehousing requirements for an operation geared for steady, year-around production of a material requiring weather protection during storage. Fertilizers such as potash and urea are examples of such products; the consumption of these materials is extremely heavy in the early spring at which time the materials must be placed in the soil, whereas, for obvious operating efficiencies, production is more or less constant for a given operation throughout the year.

The performance of depletion-type reservoirs at the stage in which the gas is at such low pressure that gravity is essentially the sole driving force has been investigated both theoretically and by use of scaled models. A simple theory is developed which completely explains the scaled model experiments. It also agrees with some field data. When the range of production rates to be considered is less than 25, the theory predicts that the production rate decline curve for homogeneous reservoirs in which there is a free surface will be of the hyperbolic type with n = 2: The theory gives a physical significance to the parameter y. INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken to determine a method for prediction of performance of reservoirs where gravity is the sole driving agent. Depletion-type reservoirs fall into this category after the pressure has fallen to some low value. Some examples of this type are found at Healdton ('Oklahoma), Oklahoma City (Oklahoma), Midway-Sunset (California), and East Coalinga (California). Generally the production rate per unit thickness is quite low in such reservoirs, with the conse- quence that this stage is sometimes called the stripper stage. However, per well production rates may be of the order of 50 B/D because of the considerable sand thickness open in some of the reservoirs. In the past, predictions of behavior of such reservoirs have been based on empirical extrapolation of the rate of production to the economic limit. Difficulties arise when new wells are drilled in the field or when production is artificially curtailed, since in such cases the decline rate of individual wells or leases changes and no clear trend can be detected. It was hoped that the present study would lead to improved methods for evaluation of such reservoirs. The study was initiated by building a scaled model for a particular field and by running a number of experiments on this model. Later a simple theory was developed which explained the laboratory results completely. The theory led, as shown below, to a hyperbolic-type decline equation which had been used previously' in a completely empirical manner. THEORY The General Case The problem to be treated here is the following: We are given a homogeneous cylindrical porous reservoir with exterior radius r, wellbore radius r., and height h,, containing, from the bottom up to a height hit oil, some gas, and interstitial water (see Fig. 1 A). The portion of the reservoir between K, and h, is filled with gas at low pressure, with residual oil, and with interstitial water. ABSTRACT: Short-term strength, damage and healing boundaries for rock salt are experimentally determined and integrated into the Hou/Lux-MDS damage-healing model. This model can be used to describe the mechanical behaviour of rock salt during a damaging process (under high stress to strength ratios) as well as during a healing process (under very low stress to strength ratios with high confining pressure). The development of the damage and the stress to strength ratio in the excavation damaged zone (EDZ) of a storage cavern under a minimum internal pressure as well as the development of the healing of damage and the stress to strength ratio under a subsequent maximum internal pressure are investigated project-related. The results of the investigation make it possible to shift the permissible minimum pressure boundary down, allowing the optimisation of decisive economic characteristics of storage caverns. RÉSUMÉ: Le comportement court terme, l’endommagement et les conditions de colmatage pour le sel gemme ont été étudiés expérimentalement et intégrés dans le model endommagement-colmatage Hou/Lux-MDS. Ce modèle permet de décrire le comportement mécanique de sel gemme pendant le processus d’endommagement (sous fort rapport contrainte-résistance) et le comportement du processus de colmatage sous très faible rapport contrainte-résistance avec forte pression de confinement. Le développement d’endommagement et le rapport de contrainte-résistance dans une zone d’endommagée (EDZ) d’une cavité de stockage avec un maximum de pression de soutènement ont été étudiés. Les résultats de cette étude permettent de conclure qu’il est possible de baisser la pression de soutènement, et par conséquent d’optimiser les caractéristiques économiques décisives des cavité de stockage. ZUSAMENFASSUNG: Für Steinsalz werden Festigkeits-, Schädigungs- und Verheilungsgrenze experimentell ermittelt und in das Schädigungs-Verheilungs-Modell Hou/Lux-MDS integriert. Damit kann das mechanische Verhalten von Steinsalz sowohl bei einem Schädigungsprozess (mit hohen Ausnutzungsgraden) wie auch bei einem Verheilungsprozess (mit niedrigen Ausnutzungsgraden) beschrieben werden. Projektbezogen werden die Schädigungs- und Ausnutzungsgradentwicklung in der Auflockerungszone einer Speicherkaverne unter einem minimalen Innendruck sowie die Verheilungs- und Ausnutzungsgradentwicklung unter einem anschließenden maximalen Innendruck untersucht. Die Untersuchungsergebnisse erlauben, die zulässige Minimaldruckgrenze nach unten zu verschieben, so dass entscheidende wirtschaftliche Kenngrößen von Speicherkavernen optimiert werden können.
