The Jones Mine (or Johannes Mine, as it was originally called, from a former proprietor), situated near Springfield, in the township of Caernarvon, Berks County, Pennsylvania, has long been known as a large deposit of magnetic iron ore, associated with more or less copper pyrites, and with malachite and chrysocolla. It occurs in a belt of soft schistose rocks which rest upon the Laurentian gneiss of the Welsh Mountain,' and to the northward are soon concealed by the unconformably overlying Mesozoic sandstone of the region. These metalliferous strata belong to the Primal slates of Rodgers, which, in many other localities in this region, include similar deposits of iron ores associated with more or less copper, and often accompanied by chloritic and argillaceous schists, and, more rarely, by serpentine and small lenticular masses of crystalline limestone. Environmentally assisted cracks in linepipe steels are initiated either as a result of stresses in combination with environmental effects, as in stress corrosion cracking (SCC), or as a result of trapped hydrogen in the steel, as in hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). To understand better the mechanism of the crack initiation process, key metallurgical and environmental elements that can affect the cracking phenomena were investigated and are reviewed in this paper. The complexity of both cracking phenomena results from the dependence of SCC and HIC on multiple metallurgical, mechanical, and environmental parameters that may all influence both crack initiation and propagation; e.g., composition, microstructure and non-metallic inclusions in the steel, applied stress, water chemistry in the field, and ionic concentrations in the groundwater near the pipe surface to name a few for SCC. In addition, for HIC phenomena, one can add the concentration of H2S in the fluids transported in the pipe as well as concentration of CO2, pH, etc. In this paper, cracking of linepipe steels is analyzed critically, with particular attention to the crack initiation process. The paper is divided into two parts: The first part covers SCC and the second covers HIC.

The objective of this paper is the development of a reliable simulation model for the operation and production capacity of an aggregates quarry. Based on this model, a computer program is introduced that provides the final production outputs according to the defined material gradation and machinery characteristics. The program takes into consideration all operational parameters that may be introduced by the user through the whole machinery network. As a result, all production parameters are properly updated. The structured simulation program can help detect production inefficiencies that result from design ineffectiveness. Additionally, the program can be used for the generation of alternative scenarios for future modifications of a plant's configuration. Finally, a designer can use it as a tool for obtaining optimum solutions concerning newly designed quarries. As a case study, a quarry operating at Heraklion, Crete, was examined. The application of the program to the plant produced a complete image of the quarry's input/output characteristics, along with some suggestions for improvements on certain production processes.

A meteoric rise in selling price has revived gold exploration activity throughout the world. In the United States the effort is, in large measure, channeled toward discovery of disseminated gold deposits such as the Carlin-type, i.e., with size and grade characteristics similar to Newmont's Carlin mine in Nevada. The subtle surface indications characteristic of Carlin-type gold mineralization have been examined by a number of geologists, and the more obvious prospects have been tested by surface sampling and drilling. It is likely that most of these readily recognizable deposits have already been found and, as a consequence, prospectors are now entering a new, second stage of exploration for Carlin-type and related disseminated gold deposits.

Since its introduction in 2002, the modern air jig has processed a wide array of coals throughout the world. This paper explores the reasons and justifications for the installations and provides case history performance data. Specifically highlighted are air jig plants processing metallurgical coal in Colombia, bituminous coal in the United States and India and lignite in the United States and Spain. Each installation has unique reasons to justify an air jig facility. It is important to note that not all of the justifications were based on the ?most cost effective yield?, normally a mantra for coal preparation plant designers and owners. Dry jigging of coal has long been a proven technique for upgrading coal, the modern air jig, with its improved efficiency and operating systems simply extended the range of applications. In some cases, it even allows market quality coal to be produced when no other option is possible.

This paper presents an analysis of ground movements recorded from longwall operations in the Northern Appalachian region in West Virginia. The site chosen for the investigation was selected due to varying heights of overburden and topography and was instrumented for both surface and subsurface measurements. The instrumentation areas consisted of two panels covering various sections with unique geologic and topographic features. Instrumentation included surveying monuments and shallow boreholes using an inclinometer for measuring horizontal strata displacements. Vertical strata deformation was monitored utilizing a unique design of the mechanical grouting method. Full length borehole profile extension was measured using Sondex displacement rings in the inclinometer installation. Subsurface displacements, i. e. caving zone, fractured zone, and highly deformed non-fractured zone were identified. The nature of surface disturbances with respect to varying geologic settings were compared, and an attempt was made to simulate final strata caving and bed separation using finite element analysis.

Cost System The cost system reported here is a suite of computer programs which incorporates the logic and information flow structure as outlined in earlier chapters. Specifically, computer programs have been devel¬oped to: 1. compute labor, operating, and capital costs, 2. summarize cost and production data, and 3. compute the minimum acceptable selling price for coal. While the cost system can be executed independently, it is de¬signed primarily for use with the Master Design Simulator and there¬fore must conform to the overall system hardware. The computer model is written in Fortran IV for use with the IBM System 360/370 computers as well as with compatible units such as the Univac 1110 and CDC-6600. For ease in error detection and program modification, the model was constructed with a main routine and eight subroutines. The main routine reads and stores the data necessary for the cost computations and calls the subroutines in logical sequence. The subroutines perform the cost computations and data adjustments for reporting purposes. Each subroutine performs the cost computations for its particular com¬ponent of the cost cycle. The program operations are described in the following narrative outline. Control Subsystem As previously described, the main routine is a passive element, reading and storing input data and directing execution to the active subroutines for cost calculations. The objective of this investigation was to investigate interactions between high-grade copper mattes and Rexal 60DB direct bonded basic bricks. The infiltration and attack of Rexal 60DB bricks by copper matte and continuous converter matte was investigated in laboratory tests at temperatures up to 1300 °C. The brick dissolution and infiltration tests did not show any significant difference between the 70% Cu and the 81% Cu mattes. More metallic copper was visible in the pores in the case of 81% Cu matte. An important mechanism for direct-bonded magnesia-chrome brick destruction is that oxysulphides start to infiltrate the brick, followed by slow oxidation of the matte producing metallic copper and cuprous oxide, which then react with MgO and Cr2O3, primarily attacking the direct bonds of the brick.

The twenty-fourth of a series of semiannual surveys pertaining to motor gasoline marketed in the United States was made by the Bureau of Mines in August, 1931. The first part of a report giving the results of that survey as they pertain to specification data is given in this paper. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will discuss the results of other determinations made on the samples, including octane number ratings on the individual samples (to be made by the Bureau of Standards) and results of the determination of gravity, color, doctor test, and "gum" content by the copper dish method and the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method. The retail price and the tax at the time each sample was taken will also be reported.

The Bureau of Mines has written a computer program in FORTRAN to facilitate the calculation of concentrations from X-ray intensities in electron probe microanalysis. Philibert's absorption and Castaing's secondary fluorescence corrections are used; no atomic number correction is included. Background and dead time corrections are applied to the data before calculating the relative intensities. Data from any type of electron probe microanalyzer can be used with the program.

An experiment is described in which instrumented rock bolts were used to measure strain in the rock mass during drift development at the Stillwater Mine, Nye, Montana, USA. Two strain-gauged rock bolts were grouted into the middle of the rib next to the face. The drift was excavated in three advances, each one-half drift wide. Strains were recorded hourly by a data logger. Results show that the average change in axial bolt strain for the first and second advance was about the same and that there was almost no change in strain after the third advance. Bending strain was observed 19 cm from the head of the bolt.

The object of this paper is to describe the electric equipment at the iron-ore mines of Penn Iron Mining Co., Vulcan, Mich. and of Republic Iron Co., Republic, Mich.; to give the results of tests; and to discuss the methods in use from an operating as well as from an efficiency standpoint. Electricity was introduced at the Penn mines for pumping, hoisting, and compressing air in the spring of 1907, upon the completion of a hydro-electric plant built by that company on the Menominee river about 4 miles from the mines. This plant was described in a paper1 presented before the Lake Superior Mining Institute. A paper2 presented at a meeting of the same Institute describes some of the operating features, and the safety devices of the electric hoist at the Curry shaft were briefly described in the Proceedings of the First Co-operative Safety Congress held under the auspices of the Association of Iron and Steel Electrical Engineers at Milwaukee, Wis., Sept. 30 to Oct. 5, 1912. Generating PoweR Plants After the success of electrical operation was assured, a second set of water wheels and generator was installed at the falls, for which provision had been made in the original design and in the construction of the foundations, and later three additional wires were added to the main transmission line, doubling its capacity and reducing the line loss. The general conditions of this installation are particularly favorable for hydro-electric operation. In the neighborhood of three-fourths of the power used is for mine pumping, which in the main is regular and continuous. "Natural fibers are gaining attention as a class of low cost, biodegradable and renewable materials that also exhibit some interesting properties for specific applications. In particular, the incorporation of some natural fibers in polymeric matrix composites is nowadays providing opportunity of manufacturing a variety of industrial items, for instance automobile interior components. Among these fibers, ramie (Boehmeria nivea) is one of the least investigated and only recently was studied as polymeric composite reinforcement. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the possibility of ramie waste reinforced polyester composites to replace conventional building materials, such as plywood, plastic boards and gypsum panels in terms of a cost-benefit analysis.IntroductionThere is a growing concern over the environmental questions that are presently affecting our society in a global sale such as climate changes and generalized pollution. Among the solutions for these questions, the replacement of energy intensive materials, especially those long term degradable such as the synthetic fibers, is already being considered [1]. As a consequence, the past decades have witnessed an increase in research devoted to new biodegradable materials obtained from natural resources mainly the biomass. Important examples are the renewable natural fibers as well as composites incorporated with them [2,3]. In addition to their friendly status with respect to the environment, well know natural fibers like jute, sisal, wood, coir, hemp and flax are relatively low cost and recyclable. In recent works [4,5], the use of these cultivated and abundant lignocellulosic fibers was investigated as the reinforcement phase in polymeric composites.Other less know lignocellulosic fibers have also been recently investigated [6,7]. These are fibers that likewise show a potential of incorporation into the polymeric matrix of composite materials. Most of these less know fibers are typical of tropical regions and, in principle, their application in industrialized composites would represent job opportunities for developing countries in Africa, South Asia and Latin America."

This paper is a progress report on the commercialization of using bioleaching for base-metal concentrates. The paper focuses on bioleach processes for recovering copper from chalcopyrite and nickel/cobalt from pentlandite/pyrrhotite. Data is discussed from pilot-plant trials in which an overall recovery >95% was obtained for the bioleaching of copper from chalcopyrite. The pilot plant was operated in closed circuit with solvent extraction and electrowinning circuits for final metal recovery. For the bioleaching of nickel and cobalt from pentlandite/pyrrhotite, an overall recovery of 97% was achieved. Precipitation routines were used to produce a final nickel/cobalt product. The pilot plants were capable of treating a few kilograms of concentrate per day. Prominent features in the design of a 1-t/day (1.1-stpd) copper-bioleach demonstration plant for the treatment of chalcopyrite concentrate are discussed. The plant, which is now under design, will be constructed and operated based on the results obtained from the laboratory pilot-plant campaigns. Issues of scale-up for the demonstration plant, together with integration into upstream and downstream processing, are also addressed. Independently derived capital and operating costs are presented for a possible commercial plant. These cost studies indicate the principle economic issues in considering the application of bioleaching to the extraction of base metals. The benefits of bioleaching complex concentrates that are not amenable to physical beneficiation and economic treatment by conventional smelting are highlighted. Issues, such as the environmental aspects, that illustrate the benefits of bioleach technology are given.

"We computed the optical properties of the cubic niobium nitride (o-NbN) compound using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FL-LAPW) method within density functional theory (DFT). The complex dielectric function and optical constants, such as optical absorption coefficient, refractive index, extinction coefficient, energy-loss spectrum, and reflectivity, are all calculated and compared with experimental results. The behavior of the computed quantities is similar to that obtained experimentally, but the optical positions are shifted to lower energies. This shift was related to the strong interband transitions, which are located at energies higher than 5 eV for NbN- as they are for IV B transition-metal mononitrides- and they appear in the computed spectra and not in the experimental spectra. These interband transitions simply shift the position of the reflectivity edge or the screened plasma frequency to the longer wavelength side.IntroductionIn recent years, NbN, as a transition metal nitride, has become a very popular material due to its high hardness, melting point, wear resistance, chemical inertness and temperature stability, which makes it suitable for use as emission cathodes in microelectronics and sensors, optical films and micro-mechanics etc [l]. Niobium nitride has long been known as highly polymorphic material, for which several crystalline structures have been reported in the literature [2]. These structures include the well known super-conducting rock-salt (Fm-3m, or Bl) structure (o-NbN), the hexagonal structure with space group p63/mmc and prototype Fe2N (18fuN), the hexagonalstructure with space group p63/mmc and prototype NiAs ~-NbN) and others.There has been a lot of computational studies for the structural and electronic properties ofNbN [3, 4-7], but according to our knowledge there is not any computational work that has been devoted to study the optical properties of this transition metal compound. At the same time a number of authors had performed experimental work in this direction. For example, Xin-kang et. al [l] studied the microstructure and optical properties of magnetron sputtered NbN thin films. Torche et. al [8] studied the composition, structure, electrical and optical properties of nonstoichiometric niobium nitrides. Newport et. al [9] investigated the reflection and transmission spectra of cubic niobium nitride films, and Tanabe et. al [10] had investigated the optical parameters and reflectivity of reactively sputtered NbN thin films by using in situ ellipsometry."

The profitability of coal mining operations is highly dependent on the performance of the coal blending and processing facilities. Many companies have recognized this fact and have instituted optimization programs that require large amounts of coal characterization data, extensive operational information and complex costing models. Unfortunately, this brute force approach to optimization is often overwhelming in terms of time and cost and is generally too inaccurate to be of value in day-to-day field operations. A simpler and more practical approach involves the use of ?micro-price? optimization throughout the coal supply chain. This fundamental concept assigns unit values to each type product (particle or groups of particles) passing through the production units. True optimization occurs whenever all particles with positive worth are recovered and passed to market, while all particles with negative worth are rejected. This paper describes the fundamental workings of the micro-price concept as applied to coal blending and processing operations. Several examples are also included to demonstrate the economic gains that can be realized via the application of this concept.

C. 4 Hoist Assemblies (not man-rated) A large number of manufacturers supply materials handling winches. These units are predominately electric powered while a limited number of vendors supply air powered equipment. Air powered units are currently used extensively for underground materials handling purposes. Suppliers of materials handling equipment normally include a disclaimer statement in their published literature which clearly states that the equipment "is not designed or suitable for lifting or lowering persons " This category of commercially available equipment can be adequate for emergency man hoisting provided that its' capacity is suitably derated and provided also that the necessary safety features are incorporated. Section C. 5 details the equipment which could be added to a commercial materials hoist to meet these needs. Four commercially available hoist assemblies, two electric and two pneumatic are discussed in the following paragraphs. This equipment is typical of what is commercially available and three of the units are currently used extensively in mining applications. Each hoist description includes a remarks paragraph which identifies the additional equipment each hoist would require for emergency hoist use.

An open pit quarry operation in West Central Illinois provided a challenging proposition regarding the removal of a rock wall that once separated two pits, but was now in the middle of the north wall of the combined pit. Their mining plan included the development of a new ramp into the quarry pit in order to lessen the slope and to shorten haul truck cycle time. The task would be to remove a section of rock left behind from mining operations more than 20 years ago that was at or near the bottom of the designed ramp.
