This paper briefly describes the characteristics and induced factors of coal mining bumps based on the investigation of recent bumps accidents occurred in China. According to the theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamic and dissipate structure, the process of strain energy accumulation and dissipation in the ?Coal-Surrounding Rock? system (CSRS) is discussed during the preparation of coal bumps. In addition, a series of experiments are conducted to analyze the relationship between bump-prone property and micro-structural characteristics of coal. The process of coal bumps induced by propagation of fractures and deterioration of coal mass properties are also analyzed systematically.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 16,927-acre Pryor Mountain Wilderness Study Area (MT-067-206), part of the 3,955-acre Burnt Timber Canyon Wilderness Study Area (MT-067-205), and part of the 4,550-acre Big Horn Tack-On Wilderness Study Area (MT-067-207) to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The Burnt Timber and Big Horn Tack-On study areas contain 3,430 and 2,550 acres, respectively. The three areas are in Carbon County, MT, and Big Horn County, WY, about 13 miles north of Lovell, WY. No identified resources exist in any of the study areas. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed literature, searched county mining records and examined prospects, claims, and mineralized areas to determine whether identified mineral resources existed. The three study areas are within the Pryor Mountain unorganized mining district. U.S. Department of Energy production records indicate there were 223,000 pounds of uranium oxide (U308) and 236,000 pounds of vanadium pentoxide (V205) produced from 19 properties within the mining district. The average ore grade was 0.36 percent [3,600 ppm (parts per million)] U308 and 0.416 percent (4,160 ppm) V20S. Only the Pryor Mountain study area has current claims, the 50 claims of the S0S group.

Mill linings play an important role in all comminution processes with tumbling mills. The selection of the lining profile and the lining material has a great impact on overall grinding cost and mill throughput. The cost of the lining itself is minor in comparison with media cost, energy cost and the value of the material produced in the mill. The total scope must be considered when mill linings are selected. This paper presents case stories and explains the technology behind: •Different lining profiles in rubber and steel. •Orebed magnetic lining. •Steel-cap rubber lining. Introduction Grinding mill liner life has been a subject of extensive studies. Performance of mill liners in terms of wear life and how it relates to lining material and profile is abundant in the literature. The most economical liner material and design has been selected based on "cents per ton milled". The evaluation of the effect of liner design on power and grinding media consumption which is a far more significant part of grinding costs, has been less comprehensive (Fig. 1). Lining materials Steel. The most commonly used lining material is steel, calculated on a volume basis. Steel linings have a long tradition and a number of alloys is being developed. The main families are: •High chromium white iron. •Cr and Ni white iron (NiHard). •High chromium martensitic steel. •High carbon Cr-Mo perlitic steel. •High carbon Cr-Mor martensitic steel. •Manganese austenitic steel. Steel linings can be successfully used in most applications. Rubber. Rubber linings were introduced 25-30 years ago and are today commonly accepted to be the most economical linings for secondary and regrind applications. Rubber linings offer long service life in these applications and generally [ ] outlast steel in wet applications, where corrosion is a factor on the steel. The cost relation between rubber and steel has changed dramatically over the years. In the past rubber was more expensive than steel, but today, the cost of rubber is close to half the cost of steel, calculated on a volume basis (Fig. 2). The present cost situation has made rubber linings an economical alternative in several primary grinding applications as well. The wear rate of rubber in primary applications is higher than the wear rate of steel, thus giving a shorter wear life. This can be compensated for by making the rubber lining thicker. The cost advantage of the rubber allows for this, but care must be taken not to jeopardize the grinding performance. Rubber, as a lining material, offers some distinct advantages over steel lining, such as: •Ease of installation and removal. •Safer to handle, less risk of injuries. •Faster replacement. •Reduces noise.

Total annual production at Martin County Coal Corporation is currently 2,500,000 tons, but in certain years exceeded 3,000,000 tons. Approximately 45 percent of the annual production comes from two surface mines. The balance is produced from five underground mines. Martin County Coal Corporation's work schedule consists of 240 days/year, two nine-hours shifts/day.

In the present work, a ceramic foam elaborated with illitic clays was characterized. Properties related to density and compression strength were determined in samples fired at 1300oC, a temperature that permits the clay structure to generate and retain gases that will produce the foamy structure. The microstructure of the ceramic foam was studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and mercury porosimetry. The results showed that the ceramic foam presents a bulk density of 0.38 g/cm3. The microstructure is formed by large open pores, quartz particles and vitreous phase.

Since millisecond-delay detonators were first introduced, at least two variables, among others, have been more closely considered when timing a mining blast: the accuracy and the precision of the initiation system. Currently, most mine blast design software has the capability to use the precision/accuracy of the firing system and display the overlap timing window between charges in any given time interval (8 ms, 3 ms, etc.). Despite these technological advances, there are still situations which result in the overlapping of charge timings. The consequences of overlapping charges involve flyrock events, fragmentation and diggability problems, and other inconvenient situations affecting the operation of the mine.

The grouping and segregation error is one of Gy’s seven errors that cannot be measured in any qualitative manner because of its transient and changing characteristics each time the sample is handled mechanically. Attempts to calculate the mean and variance of the segregation error is considered by some as ‘an exercise in futility’ that would not help us achieve representative sampling. This research is aimed at understanding the process of segregation of dense, finely divided and dilute particulate materials supported in a clean quartz substrate during intense agitation. Several mixtures of fine-grained materials including steel, tungsten carbide and gold grains were used in these experiments. Four hundred grains of each of the minerals and metals at a top size of 2 mm were mixed with approximately 600 g of finely ground quartz material (95 per cent passing 2000 microns) in a 500 ml plastic jar with a sealable lid. The mineral–?metal mixtures were analysed in three steps using microfocus X-ray computed tomography. Step one consisted of rolling the containers on a flat surface in an attempt to concentrate the mineral and metal grains in the core of the supporting substrate; this is a base case that can be reconstructed after each session of analysis. The second step involved gentle and vigorous shaking of the mixtures in order to segregate the denser minerals and metals from the supporting quartz substrate. In some cases, a third step involved splitting the sample through a riffle splitter. Three-?dimensional images of the surface of each grain, its volume and its X-, Y- and Z-coordinates, before and after intense agitation of the container, were interpreted from the reconstruction of the tomographic X-ray data. The spatial analysis of grains using cell declustering and 3D variography provided a useful means of characterising the distribution of the grains in space and the extent to which they had become segregated during the process of agitation. Spatial analysis indicates that in general, grouping and continuity of grains is weakly developed. The modelled nugget effect remains high for most tests, indicating that grains of similar size did not group together strongly. Agitation through rolling provided the best continuity, although not consistently in the long axis of the plastic jar. The nugget effect was consistently highest, and the range of continuity shortest in samples that had been split, indicating that the grouping and continuity were reduced through splitting the sample. Initial results indicate that very little segregation of the minerals and metals occurs in the quartz substrate. This is somewhat counter-intuitive, but suggests that the effects of agitation on mixtures of dense minerals and metals in substrates of lower density do not lead to excessive segregation. Differences in behaviour between dense materials in response to agitation are evident. Grains of different composition and shape did not group and segregate in a predictable manner in response to the agitation methods. "Non-producing mineral properties include those at various stages of exploration, properties at the pre-feasibility or feasibility stage, properties with currently uneconomic mineral resources, and past-producers. The market approach is applicable to all these types of non-producing mineral properties. Income approach methods such as discounted cash flow and option pricing are generally not applicable to properties at the exploration stage, but may be applicable to non-producing mineral properties with defined mineral reserves or mineral resources.The value of a non-producing mineral property depends on its perceived potential for the existence and discovery of an economic mineral deposit. The potential, in turn, depends on a number of factors which must be considered when choosing market comparables. These comparability factors include such items as geology, mineralization, stage of exploration and results, mineral resources, location and geography, and political jurisdiction. The date of the market comparables must be within a reasonable time period of the valuation date of the subject property. Although it is difficult to find good market comparables because of the unique nature of mineral properties and the small number of transactions, these difficulties are compensated for by analyzing a number of transactions on similar properties to develop a range of values for the subject property.For valuation purposes, market comparables can be expressed in terms of total property value, value per unit area (e.g., $ per hectare), or value per unit of metal contained in mineral resources (e.g., $ per ounce of gold, or $ per pound of copper). The market comparable value can be used to estimate the value of the subject property by using the total property value, unit area value or contained metal value."

Gold mineralisation at the Hamata prospect is related to a series of stacked pyrite and quartz-pyrite veins associated with a number of shears which strike N to NE and dip E. Mineralisation is contained entirely within the Morobe Granodiorite close to the intersection of the Upper Watut Fault and some younger NE to SW striking faults. The prospect was originally detected in 1987 by a regional stream sediment sampling programme. Subsequent mapping and sampling outlined an anomalous zone approximately 900m long by 300m wide. Drill testing has indicated a resource of 46Mt at 0.9 g/t Au.

"Generally, the concentration of bauxite flotation tailings is around 10%, a large amount of water in tailings needed to be recycled in the flotation process. Sedimentation and dewatering properties of tailings were investigated under different conditions. Surface high negative charges on mineral particles are the key factor to destroy the settlement of tailings when the pulp pH is around 8.9. Hence, the modification of pulp pH around 7 is necessary to the diminution of the repulsive force between mineral particles and then the acceleration of sedimentation of tailings. Anionic polyacrylamine with molecular weight of 14 million is the best flocculant for the settlement of tailings in all tested polyacrylamines. P-toluene sulfonic acid shows better properties than hydrochloric acid for pulp pH adjustment when anionic polyacrylamine with molecular weight of 14 million is used as flocculant. Although the flotation of diaspore is depressed in the presence of polyacrylamine using sodium oleate as collector, but the recycling water traded by the combination of ployacrylamine and p-touenesulfonic acid does not show the depression effects on the flotation of bauxite ore. The lower residual content of polyacrylamine in recycling water treated by the combination of ployacrylamine and p-touene sulfonic acid plays an important role. INTRODUCTION Generally, the waste water generated from mineral processing plant is usually treated by sedimentation, oxidization, electrodialysis, ions exchange, active carbon adsorption and flotation technology, and the treated water is also used again in the industrial process. Flotation was adopted widely to improve the quality of bauxite from low grade diasporic bauxite in China. For flotation, the grinding fineness of bauxite is over 90% -0.074 mm, sodium carbonate and sodium hexametaphosphate were used as regulators, so the tailings pulp is very difficult to settle and be dewatered (Y. Wang et al., 2004; Y. H. Wang et al., 2007; Wang Yu-hua et al., 2008; Wang Yuhua et al., 2011). The water recycling of bauxite tailings are becoming the highlight for the industrial application of the flotation process for bauxite ore. Researchers in China shift their attentions onto this topic."

This paper reviews transportation trends in large base metal open-pit mines in recent years. Particular attention is paid to the unprecedented increases in the cost of oil and its effect on operating costs. Fuel conservation and measures to improve trucking efficiency are considered. The paper also discusses viable alternatives for reducing or eliminating the use of trucks. Various advantages and disadvantages of using conveyors to transport shot rock from the mine are reviewed. The paper concludes with some observations on current policies and trends primarily aimed at mitigating the high cost of energy.

In our investigation of the Behavior of Calcium Sulphate at Elevated Temperatures with Some Fluxes,' we incidentally studied the decomposition of ferric oxide when heated in a current of dry air. We found that at 1,500° C., with 15-min. periods of heating, Fe²,O³, hardly changed in weight, the greatest loss being 0.23 per cent., and we therefore concluded that the compound remained unchanged at 1,500° C. in a current of dry air. In a more recent experiment we heated Fe²,O³, in a current of dry air and found that there was a decided loss in weight. By-products are of greater importance in lead and zinc mining than in any of the other major base metals. While I think most mining people would accept that statement, you would probably get some widely varying estimates when attempting to quantify the value of by-products in lead and zinc mining. We are now able to do this with our lead-zinc mine cost model. This model was originally developed as a zinc mine cost model to help us forecast long-term zinc supply and price as part of a study we completed in late 1979 entitled "Zinc - The Next Decade". Before demonstrating the importance of by-product revenue to lead- zinc mines, let me first explain how the cost model was constructed. I will discuss the model as it was originally constructed - as a zinc mine cost model. It has subsequently been expanded to include lead only mines and now can Be run either as a zinc or a lead mine cost model.

"The adoption of tunneled combined sewerage interceptors and outfalls leads to design linings which are often subject to internal pressures that are larger than the external pressures, resulting in significant tension loads. The need to meet stringent durability conditions for the normal design life of 100 years often drives client specifications to require a double pass solution with a cast in situ secondary concrete lining. However, improvements in concrete technology and the need to seek efficiency in terms of time and costs, have driven designers to consider single pass segmental linings. The Riachuelo Sanitation project in Buenos Aires is subject to these constraints both upstream and downstream of a sewage treatment plant. This paper describes how the challenges of up to 2 bar pressure differential have been addressed by careful analysis of soil structure interaction to ensure that the full benefit of external ground pressure is realized, resulting in a more optimal design for the constructor both in terms of cost and time. INTRODUCTION The construction of long sewerage interceptors and outfalls is becoming an increasingly common piece of infrastructure for modern urban cities facing a large water front and estuarine conditions, which are under a significant environmental burden imposed by decades of sustained growth. Such works intercept most of the distributed sewage discharges to then divert them to a central treatment point from which it will be finally diffused via an outfall into a water body capable to accept these discharges under acceptable environmental conditions. Depending on the magnitude of the sewage load to be handled, the configuration of the urban environment and the conditions of the receiving water body, both in terms of oceanography forces and seabed conditions, these schemes will vary in length, conveyance capacity and design and construction requirements. When conditions permit, the current trend is the execution of long outfalls using flexible solutions (such as the use of HDPE pipes) which usually require some form of concrete ballasted weights to resist off shore dynamic forces when directly laid over the sea bed. However, this concept faces limitations when the conveyance requirements indicate the need for large diameters (typically above 3000 m) and also when the outfall needs to avoid deep features off shore such as navigation channels. When this occurs, tunneling, particularly segmentally lined tunnel constructed by TBM emerges as the most feasible approach for large diameter, long deep outfalls. The operating conditions often result in internal pressures that are larger than the external pressures, resulting in significant tension loads in the lining. The need to meet stringent durability conditions for the normal design life of 100 years often drives client specifications to require a double pass solution with a cast in situ secondary concrete lining."

Discussion of the paper of DR. L. EDELEANU, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2313 to 2332. F. W. BUSHONG,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-This process of extraction is particularly advantageous in the case of Roumanian oil, on account of its high aromatic content. I have prepared a paper, which will appear probably next month in the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, describing a series of two-degree fractions of oil from the Nowata field in Oklahoma. I have made extractions with liquid sulphur dioxide in accordance with Dr. Edeleanu's method, and found that the Oklahoma oils, for instance the kerosene fractions, are purified in this way, although the quantity taken out does not at all compare with that taken out of the Roumanian oil. I have made careful analyses of separate fractions, before and after extraction, and they show a very distinct fractional separation-. I like the distinction, brought out by Dr. Day in previous discussions, in regard to oils, rather than oil, and his beautiful illustration of fractionation. Just as fuller's earth, and other clays, will enable us to obtain lower-boiling fractional portions of the oils, and eventually retain a residuum which is hard to get rid of, or to remove, so there is an advantage to be gained by the use of a reagent which begins at the other end by taking out these last constituents first, namely, ozone. I have also analyzed the ozonides and they are derivatives of hydrocarbons very much poorer. in hydrogen than we have heretofore supposed. Similar results have been obtained with Roumanian, Russian, and Italian petroleums. Furthermore, I have prepared ozonides from a fraction of Oklahoma oils, both before and after ex-' traction with liquid sulphur dioxide, and found that the ozonide obtained from the extract is the same as that precipitated out of the original oils. In other words, the residual substance, which the fuller's earth retains, is the one first thrown down by the use of ozone, but it may also be extracted by liquid sulphur dioxide- and be thus separated in apparently unaltered condition. The analysis of this extract corresponds to the formula C15H20, which is surprising, since it is lower in hydrogen content than we have been in the habit of considering among the constituents of our oils. The extract was probably contaminated with other hydro-carbons, but I think it is unquestionable that we must look for hydro-carbons in petroleum which correspond to a formula at least -as low in hydrogen as C15H2o, and possibly even as low as C15H16.

The ores of mercury of North California are composed of metallic mercury and cinnabar. They are found in serpentine, and are very often associated with chalcedony, in masses more or less irregular, often concentrated enough, however, to furnish ores yielding from three to ten per cent., and sometimes richer. This deposit makes its appearance in Vallejo where it has been worked. North of here the mines are more developed. Most of the quicksilver mines, however, are situated in Sonoma and Napa Counties. On its outcrop the serpentine rocks have become decomposed, and have often been washed away to a considerable depth, so that in many cases in their neighborhood, what is apparently nothing but ordinary dirt, will frequently contain from two to three per cent. of metallic mercury, with but a trace of cinnabar, in which case, as at the Sonoma mine, it is made up into adobes and distilled. Such material does not require to be mixed with dirt to be made into adobes. Very often, also, the outcrop of the rock, where it is not decomposed, is filled with metallic mercury, so that by striking a pick into it, as at the Rattlesnake mine, a pound or more of mercury at a time will sometimes spurt out. Such rock as this is found in several localities in every stage of impregnation, and usually makes very rich ore. There is generally, however, very little of it, and it is found only in the first workings; the ore in depth is always cinnabar. At the Rattlesnake mine near Pine Flat, where large quantities of metallic mercury are found, the rock contains so much petroleum that it has been necessary to make special arrangements to burn the carbides of hydrogen, since the distillation of the petroleum causes an extra quantity of poor soot to be formed in the condensation-chambers. At the Geysers the ore is associated with large quantities of sulphur and gypsum, so that in a hand specimen there is often more sulphur than cinnabar, which is a serious impediment to working, especially for the modern style of furnace with iron condensers, and causes so much soot to be formed that it has been known to penetrate as far as the blower, and to so completely clog it as to prevent its revolution. The ore coming from the mine is more or less hand-picked. In one or two cases attempts have been made to treat the poorest, and especially the very fine ores, mechanically as at the California works.

Drilling has been accepted as a major exploration tool. However its use in mine planning and development has been overlooked.This need for drillhole data was highlighted during the redevelopment boom of the central Victorian gold mines. During the 1980's numerous old mines were evaluated and successfully drilled to yield mineable parcels of quartz reefs close to existing workings.Invariably the initial decision was always to attempt reopening and rehabilitating existing access. The four case studies described have proceededsufficiently to show that major cost savings would have been made if underground drilling had been used as the main tool in mine planning.Savings not only in expenditure, but in the time required to make key decisions. In two cases the mines would have experienced far earlier expansions in production. In one case the mine would be currently producing rather than awaiting further finance. In the fourth example, the decision to case development would have been much earlier providing capital to other projects.

Since its introduction in 1989, the Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Code (the JORC Code or the Code) has been one of the success stories of the informational interface between the mining industry and investors. This is due variously to the user-friendly nature of the Code itself, to its practical approach to this complex subject, and to the way in which its requirements have been implemented in practice. Recognition of its utility and effectiveness has influenced a significant number of mining countries to re-assess their reporting standards with the positive outcome being that for the first time, a set of standard international definitions for reporting of mineral resources and reserves is a realistic possibility.
