Some four hundred million tonnes of low rank sub-bituminous coal occurs in four separ rate lobes at Leigh Creek. These deposits are in a sparsely populated pastoral area remote from industrial centres. Early development was retarded because of high mining and haul- age costs and the availability of other fuels. The search for additional fuels after the second world war led to thorough investigations into the burning characte-,istics of the coal and the discovery of shallow coal suitable for open out mining. The development of the field included the establishment of water supply, improved rail facilities and a town.

SYSTEMATIC data are presented on the relation of composition of nickel silvers to color, tarnish resistance, hardness and liquidus temperatures, for alloys containing up to 30 per cent nickel and 50 per cent zinc, further modified at certain nickel and zinc contents by 0 to 8 per cent of tin and 0 to 10 per cent of lead. Attention has also been directed, using a still more limited range of alloys, toward a study of tensile properties and such casting properties and characteristics as fluidity, shrinkage and pressure tightness. In some of these, rather broad ranges of composition are dealt with; in others, it has been expedient to focus attention on the Federal Specification 20 per cent nickel silver casting alloy, WWP-541.

Although remote sensing technology has been available for many years, it has rarely been used for monitoring mining activity. Recent studies indicate that remote sensing is also a valuable tool for managing and planning certain aspects of the mining operation. In this paper, we examine areal expansion of marble quarries and the affected vegetation over a period of 10 years in the Mugla region in Turkey, using geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) techniques. Images captured by ASTER Level 3A01 (3D Ortho Data Set), Landsat 5, and Landsat 7 satellites between 2001 and 2009 were used for the analysis. Changes in the natural vegetation as a function of the production level in the marble quarry were calculated using the normalized difference vegetation index. According to the study results, land cover and natural vegetation decreased by less than 3 per cent and 1 per cent respectively between 2001 and 2009, following an upsurge in mining activity in the region.

The metals industry is in complete chaos with mines being shut down, profits becoming non-existent, and continual losses to imports from other countries. Yet the raw material supplier to the glass industry has many opportunities to grow and to produce profits. Fortunately, the cost of most glass raw materials are low enough that competition from imports is not anywhere as critical as it is in the metal industries, such as copper, aluminum, lead, and others. But the glass raw material supplier must develop new products, both chemically and physically, to effectively compete in the future. The purpose of this paper is to point out generally where these opportunities exist and to suggest how they may be further developed. As the glass industry looks for energy saving materials, they look once again towards finer materials. A glass furnace is now approximately 40% efficient. Glass engineers are constantly striving for energy savings and it is well known that finer materials melt easier so that the manufacturer can operate his furnace either at lower temperatures for the same production or he can produce more material at the same temperature. The old 20 mesh sand specification is no longer sacred and as the mesh size for sand changes so do the specifications for all other raw materials used in the melting process. Highly instrumented glass furnaces can now measure quite accurately the energy needs to produce glass and can also measure the energy loss in each furnace. Glass technologists desire today a sand with a top size of 40 mesh while some would like to have the top at 60 mesh. This becomes more difficult to accomplish as a raw material supplier without .grinding. As you well know, grinding develops fines. Yet the same technologists will tell us that we can have nothing passing a 140 mesh screen. Therefore, we must develop processes which allows us to produce a finer screen size without increasing the amount of fines passing through the 140 mesh screen. To counteract this, different and changing industries are now demanding much finer products so possibly there will be markets for the fines which are currently separated out of the products. Methods that are practical and low cost must be found to develop different products with different screen specifications. What works for sand can be carried over to the other raw materials used in melting. Among the answers to finer products, of course, are pellets. Aglomeration or pelletizing has been looked at in the past and will be looked at in the future. Considerable work has been done in the glass container industry on this and must be carried out more extensively. By using aglomerated material or pellets, the glass producer will gain the benefits of melting fine materials without suffering from handling or dust problems. Pelletizing, particularly where using basic glass melting materials such as burned lime or sodium silicate, will not only produce a good pellets but will add desirable minerals to the glass batch.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an experimental method to evaluate the relative effectiveness of water additives on the extinguishment of coal fires. The experiments were conducted in the fire zone of the multiple entry section of the Bruceton Experimental Mine. Chambers filled with one hundred and eighty kilograms of Pittsburgh seam coal were ignited and allowed to burn until well developed fires were achieved. Extinguishing agent-water solutions were then applied to the fires and the quantity required to extinguish the fires compared to the amount of water alone required to extinguish similar fires. A 20% diammonium phosphate-water solution required an average of 22 L to extinguish the coal fires, while two commercially available additive-water solutions required an average of 30.6 and 30.3 L, respectively. The average amount of water required to extinguish the fires was 28 L. An analysis of covariance, using the thermal energy of the coalbed, Q, to quantify the fire at the time of extinguishment, showed that the diammonium phosphate-water solution was slightly more effective at extinguishing these coal fires than water alone, while the two commercially available additive-water solutions were statistically equivalent to water alone.

This manuscript describes the Kivcet treatment of lead-bearing materials having high contents of copper and zinc. The tests were carried out on bulk concentrates from the Zyrianovsk Mining and Concentrating complex, "Kazzinc" JSC (Kazakhstan) with the following composition: Pb 37.6%, Cu 10.4% and Zn 6.8%. Two properties of the concentrate were under investigation: their calorific value and their desulphurization rate. By adding flux, the charge properties were brought close to the properties of high-grade lead sulphide concentrate. The charge was melted with high productivity. To ensure high copper recovery, Waelz residue was added to the charge. The residue contained more than 20% carbon and about 30% iron metal. The residue was partially replaced by coke that facilitates high copper recovery into the matte. The smelting achieved a production rate of 20 t/h with one burner. Lead recovery into the lead bullion was 88.8%; copper recovery into matte was 92.3%; zinc recovery into slag was 75.5%; and zinc recovery into the fume was 5.1%.

An extensive ferromanganese nodule field south of New Zealand (Fig. 1) has existed beneath the flow of the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) and Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) for at least the past 15 m.y. West of 174°E, between 59°S and 48°S, the field is 300-500 km wide, but east of 174°E, where current flow impinges on the eastern slope of the Campbell Plateau, the field narrows from ca. 200 km at 55°S to ca. 120 km at 51°S. This narrowing coincides with deflection of current flow eastwards, and consequent reduction in bottom-current velocity and eddy kinetic energy. Based on sea floor photographs, dredge samples and 3.5 kHz profile data, six distinct seafloor substrates are delineated, forming broadly parallel zones eastwards from the lowermost Campbell Slope (Fig. 2).

The presentation describes the operation and field test results of a seafloor massive sulphide prospecting system. The prospecting system is deployed from a work-class ROV, and it features a new and innovative electromagnetic ocean floor conductivity sensor. It also includes magnetometers, a multibeam sonar, and subsea cameras. The prospecting system has been used in two exploration campaigns - one in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in 2007 and again in 2008 in both PNG and Tonga waters. The 2007 campaign used the prototype sensor, and the 2008 campaign used a Mark II version. Correlations between drill core samples and EM conductivity results are excellent. New prospecting system data will be used to help plan future core drilling locations. The presentation discusses the principle of operation of the EM conductivity sensor, discusses improvements made in the EM sensor and the overall prospecting system, and shows exploration results. Discussion of the paper of PHILIP W. HENRY, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 97, January, 1915, pp. 23 to 30. C. ,E. GRUNSKY, JR., San Francisco, Cal. (communication to the Secret ary*).-The difference of opinion of engineers on the subject of depreciation is justified, to some, extent, by the many viewpoints from which such a subject can be considered when applied to properties of widely differing physical characteristics. Mr. Henry takes up the subject of depreciation as applied alone to oil properties, and in doing so makes a clear distinction between amortization and the repair or renewal requirement. After carefully reading the paper the purpose of its author in suggesting a "depreciation" reserve or fund to keep the property at a constant value does not seem clear. As shown by Mr. Henry, the depreciation element as compared with the operating expense per gallon of oil is very large because of the comparatively short life of the oil properties, and it is also evident that such a "depreciation" fund would in a short time contain a very large amount of money. It seems desirable and permissible in income-tax matters to take into account the depreciation of property and to separate from the income such money as is necessary to amortize the invested capital to an extent warranted by the depreciation. However, it does not seem either necessary or desirable to create a large fund which will in time approximate the entire invested capital and which may he invested by the directors, as Mr. Henry suggests, "in the property itself or in outside securities." This method seems cumberome and liable to offer in the reinvestment of such a fund temptations to a directorate that might show more devotion to its own interests than that of the stockholders. A reserve fund is very frequently desirable in mining and oil operations, but to keep up a fund of this magnitude or to reinvest it in outside securities does not seem desirable from a stockholders' standpoint. The. money withdrawn from the receipts to be placed in the depreciation fund (not including replacements and the drilling of new wells necessary to keep up the productiveness) should he returned to the stockholders of the company, not as dividends, but as an amortization of the invested capital.

Introduction The formation of scale is common in gold ore processing plants. A working definition of such scale is: "A hard, tightly adhering deposit formed in place by the precipitation of calcium-bearing mineral compounds from water." The most common scale found in gold processing plants is calcium carbonate (CaCO3) although calcium sulfate (CaSO4) is occasionally a problem. The problem of scale in carbon strip circuits Carbon strip circuits present a particularly challenging scale inhibition problem. Many of the factors that tend to promote scaling are present in these systems. For example, carbon strip circuits are run at high temperatures and high pH levels and require long batch cycle times. Tortuous paths are encountered by the strip solution circulating through heat exchangers, pipes and elbows, causing transient pressure drops throughout the system. Severe conditions such as these cause the water to possess a high scaling potential and may lead to the breakdown of some of common types of scale inhibitors. Formation of scale Natural waters contain dissolved minerals and gases that promote scaling. One of the contained gases, carbon dioxide (CO2), is an important factor in scale deposition. Carbon dioxide dissolves in water to yield carbonic acid according to the following reaction: [CO2 + H2O - H2CO3 (carbonic acid)] Carbonic acid rapidly dissociates to yield bicarbonate and carbonate ions depending on the pH of the system: [H2CO3 -s H+ + HCO-3 (pH range 6-10) HCO3 -a H+ + COO (pH range > 9)] In gold cyanidation processes, lime is added to raise the pH of the mill solution to 10 or above to promote cyanidation of the gold and to eliminate the possibility of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) formation. Lime contributes both hydroxyl ions (OH--) and calcium ions (Ca++) to the solution. The normal scale forming reactions in mill water systems were described by Beasley (1973) as: [HCO-3 + OH -s C03 + H2O Ca++ + C03 -a CaCO3] Factor affecting scale deposition According to Linke's (1958) solubility tables, the solubility of calcium carbonate in carbon-dioxide free water is only 13 mg/dm3 (13 mg/L) at 25° C (77° F). Scale deposition occurs when the concentration of calcium and carbonate ions in the solution exceeds the solubility of calcium carbonate. This occurs, in most cases, when the water has undergone some chemical or physical change. Some typical changes that might occur that lead to scale deposition are discussed below. Temperature An increase in temperature can greatly increase the tendency to form calcium carbonate scale. Studies by Miller (1952) have indicated that calcium carbonate is less soluble at higher temperatures. Hence, high temperatures promote scaling. For this reason, scale is often noticed on heat exchangers, autoclaves and other high temperature surfaces. Pressure A decrease in pressure may lead to an increase in the tendency to form calcium carbonate scale. Fulford's (1967) work has shown that scale is more soluble at high pressures. Hence, scale is likely to be prevalent in pump suction lines, elbows, baffles and other areas that produce turbulence and subsequent pressure drops. Change in pH Calcium carbonate scale is pH dependent and tends to form more readily at high pH. Any event that causes an increase in pH, such as the introduction of lime or caustic, would tend to initiate scale formation. Since most gold recovery operations are run at a pH above 10, the tendency to form calcium carbonate scale is always great. The use of scale inhibitors to prevent calcium carbonate scale Many products are commercially available to inhibit the formation of calcium carbonate scale. A performance comparison of 14 rescue breathing apparatus was undertaken as an assessment of past and present worldwide technology. Rescue breathing apparatus are self-contained, closed-circuit breathing apparatus used for entry into areas having atmospheres that are immediately dangerous to life and health. Apparatus tested were the Biomarine BioPak 45, 60, and 240; the Draeger BG 4 and BG-174A; the Litton LITPAC II; the MSA Custom 4500 II Air Mask, Chemox, and McCaa; the Sabre Selected Elevated Flow Apparatus (SEFA); the Scott Rescue-Pak; the Siebe Gorman Aerorlox and Proto Ten; and the SurvivairLP-120. The apparatus were tested on an automated breathing and metabolic simulator at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Physiological parameters monitored during the testing were average inhaled CO2 and O2, minimum inhaled CO2, inhaled wet-and dry-bulb temperatures, and peak inhalation and exhalation breathing pressures. The metabolic demand on the apparatus was 1.35 L O2/min for most of the test with two 5-min intervals of 2.5 L O2/min, the first beginning 10 min into the test and the second beginning 10 min before the end of the rated duration of the apparatus. Results presented include apparatus service life and test-averages of monitored physiological parameters. Schematic drawings and photographs of the apparatus are also included. The Draeger BG-174A and BG 4 had the highest durations—295 and 291 min, respectively. The BG 4 hadthe lowest minimum inhaled CO2 levels, attesting to the effectiveness of its CO2-absorbent canister. The SabreSEFA had the lowest average inhaled CO2 levels, due mostly to the apparently low-dead-space mask andnose cup. The MSA Air Mask, the only open-circuit device tested, had the lowest wet- and dry-bulb temperatures, with the liquid-O2-source Siebe Gorman Aerorlox having the next lowest temperatures. The only apparatus with a CO2-absorbent not in a packed-bed design, the BG-174A, had the lowest exhalation pressures. The BG 4 had the highest level of positive pressure, with the Biomarine BioPak 60, Survivair LP-120, SEFA, and Litton LITPAC II nearly as high. The BG 4 had the lowest pressure swing, with the SEFA a close second.

"Paramount to sound aggregate resource management is an awareness of what resources exist. For the past six years, New Brunswick has been conducting granular aggregate resource inventories in and around urban centres as a means of documenting, both qualitatively and quantitatively, these resources.These aggregate studies require extensive ground truthing due to the often small nature of the surficial feature s as well as extensive foliage. Approximately 35% of the province's land mass has been mapped at a 1:50,000 scale as part of this on-going program. Reports are published annually and include data on size analysis, lithology soundness, abrasion and absorption.Aggregate deposits in New Brunswick frequently reflect the local bedrock lithology and, whereas much of New Brunswick is underlain by soft, friable sandstone of Pennsylvanian age, it is necessary to transport aggregate for higher-specification use considerable distances. Alternatively, the construction industry must turn to crushed stone as a source of asphaltic or concrete aggregate.Over 40% of New Brunswick's land mass is owned by the Crown, and aggregate resources are managed under the Quarriable Substances Act. Under this legislation, permit applications are reviewed by a Land Management Advisory Committee which consists of representatives from the various government departments involved.IntroductionSurficial materials either directly or indirectly form the basis of much of our economic activity, whether it is the field of agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, construction or other. The modem open pit-heap leach operation by Pegasus Gold Ltd. at Zortman and Landusky in Phillips County, Montana, is a new chapter in the mining of gold in these districts. The discovery of bulk tonnage ore bodies and their development and ultimate production was based on a long history of mining and exploration in that part of Montana. Gold was originally discovered in the Little Rocky Mountains as placer deposits by Pike Landusky and Lou Myers. This discovery in the 1880s was not significant, but Pike Landusky continued prospecting for lode deposits, and he eventually located the Gold Bug and Little Ben, two of the larger Au-Ag producers in the district. Eventually two camps, Landusky and Zortman, grew in the LittleRocky Mountains. By the time Landusky was killed in 1894 by Kid Curry, the district was still a discontinuous small producer. Steady production commenced in 1907 with the organization of the August Gold Mining Co. Eventually high grade ores on specific veins were exhausted by selective underground mining and the district was idle by May 1942. After World War II in the early 1950s. E.A. Scholz tried to continue selective underground mining, but he realized the stockworks surrounding the larger veins constituted bulk tonnage targets. Ultimately in the 1976- 1979 period he organized two exploration efforts, one each for the Landusky and Zortman areas, and brought these into production as the Argo and Pegasus gold mines. By the time of his death, Apr. 8, 1980, both operations were producing gold. Later the two companies were merged as Pegasus Gold Ltd. Upon the death of Scholz, V.F. Hollister continued as the geological consultant, Ed Roper was engaged as general manager, and J. J. Crowhurst was given the responsibility of executive vice president. The discovery of open pittable ores and the application of heap leach technology was important in the development of mining. Both contributed to the low cost operation that continues to this day. The attached article by L.M. Rogers, then chief geologist, and M.S. Enders, his assistant, describes the geology of the deposit. It was presented at the Northwest Mining Association meeting in 1982.

FOR many years there has been no book that adequately represented the present state of the art of coal preparation-an art that has been rapidly changing during the passing years, and particularly during the last ten or fifteen years. In fact, changes of preparation have been so rapid that no book could keep abreast of their progress, and even the Proceedings of the technical societies have not been able to do so. It has been the intention of this committee and of the editor to make this book as nearly up to date as possible and to make it one that would appeal primarily to operating men, while at the same time adequately showing the theory back of the many processes used. The start of the war and the increased calls upon the time of the authors selected for the various chapters have slightly dimmed the brightness of the ideal intended, but the result undoubtedly brings the practice of preparation and its literature closer together than they ever have been before. It is the hope of the committee that this book will be useful both to those whose daily work is concerned with preparation and to consumers who use the product produced at the many fine and up-to-date coal plants throughout the country, which are now producing, as they always have done, all the coal needed by this country in its greatest crisis. While the committee has exercised a general supervision over the preparation of the various chapters, all of the correspondence and edi¬torial work have been done by Prof. David R. Flyrock is the unexpected and undesirable projection of rock fragments during detonation of a blast and managing this risk is becoming an increasing challenge as urban development encroach toward mineral extraction sites. The basic factors associated with flyrock are discussed in relation to geology, blast design and management. Published data of historical flyrock events are investigated and compared with local information on incidents. Good agreement was found between the data sets. A computer program of flyrock was developed using projectile motion based on launch velocity and angle, rock size, shape and density. This deterministic model was coupled with a probability model to simulate blast events. The impulse time ?t of the explosive pressure was taken as the stochastic variable to replace launch velocity. The variables were calibrated to replicate field data. A simulation was executed to demonstrate the capability of the approach to defining flyrock danger zones. For a simplistic situation it was identified that an appropriate distance to be cordoned off for the blast danger zone is a radius of 120 m in front of the blast and 65 m behind.

This paper describes the methods of constructing timber barricades against pillars of ore in the South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W., and discusses the behaviour of the various types of barricade alongside trucked sand filling and hydraulic stowed sand filling.Since the introduction of hydraulic stowing, cut and fill and overhand square letting methods have been used in mining the pillars. Such methods could not be used where the pillars had failed badly. The filling used is partially deslimed concentrating millresidue containing among other gangue minerals, calcite and a small amount of pyrrhotite and pyrite.The author is indebted to the mine superintendent of Broken Hill South Limited for permission to publish this paper.OLD METHODS OF CONSTRUCTING BARRICADES.Square Set Stopes.Before filling each stope the outer row of legs was lined inside with 10 in. x 2 in. boards spaced 2 in. apart. It was usual to tie the row of legs and caps together with timber dogs. As the space between the barricade and ground varied from nil to several feet, it was general practice to fill behind the lining boards. No provision was made to retain this sand during subsequent pillar stoping, consequently a run of sand right up the barricade could cause adilution of ore and serIOUS dIstortion of the barricade.

While we have not been primarily interested in the determination of hydrogen in the alloys that we have been dealing with, we arc very glad to cooperate in this symposium on sampling and analysis for hydrogen, as we can never tell when we may find it desirable to perform such analyses. Vacuum-fusion Method Our primary interest has been oxygen and carbon, in the analysis of which we think we have become very proficient. Our oxygen-analyzing apparatus is of the vacuum-fusion type (Fig. I). This employs Dr. Derge's type of graphite cruciblc and slit sleeve, with graphite powder between, for heat insulation (Fig. 2) supported in a clear quartz bulb connected to the Pyrex glass system by means of a carefully made ground joint. The latter is kept cool by means of an air blast from a circular copper tube surrounding the joint. The crucible is heated by high-frequency induction and the 24 one-gram samples successively dropped in from the horizontal tube at the top by means of a magnet. The gases (H², CO, N2) are passed through the CuO catalyst held at 300°C. (converting CO to CO²I, H² to H²O) and the CO² and H2O frozen out in the main liquid air trap, while N2 is evacuated. At the end of the operation, shown by the termocouple vacuum gauge indicating a pressure of 10-4 mm. Hg, the analyzing system is isolated by means of the mercury cutoffs, and the CO² and H2oare determined by transferring first the CO2 and then the HzO to the small trap at the right. This is done by placing liquid air on the small trap, then removing the liquid air from the large trap for one minute, which is sufficient to evaporate the Co2 and transfer it to the small trap. The CO2 is then measured by closing the mercury cutoff at the extreme right, removing the liquid air from the small trap, warming it up to room temperature, adjusting the mercury level to one of the three marks on the glass tube (corresponding to three volumes calibrated so that I mm. Hg of CO² corresponds to 0.001, 0.002 and 0.010 mg., respectively, of oxygen) and finally reading the pressure. Liquid air is now replaced on the large trap, the mercury cutoff at the right opened, transferring the COz back to the large trap. The cutoff to the pumps is then opened, the liquid air removed for one minute, thus evacuating the CO², the pumps again cut off and the H2 O transferred to the small trap as before, except that it is now necessary to warm the large trap with a Bunsen burner in order to evaporate all the H2O. This requires about three minutes, as the inner tube must be heated to at least 100°C.
