Through the generous cooperation of the authors of the papers in this chapter, a great wealth of fundamental data is being made available. The same plan of securing and submitting data will be carried forward next year, with the hope of making a nearer approach to complete presentation of the data contemplated in the plan. KIRCHEN, FREDERICK BRADSHAW, C. B. LAKENAN, TASKER L. ODDIE. The formation of the Nevada Section was originally suggested by Professor F. C. Lincoln, who had discussed the subject with Mr. William L. Saunders when the latter was President of the Institute. Professor Lincoln sought the assistance of the Nevada Mine Operators' Association, whose Executive Committee constituted itself a Committee on Organization, and authority for the establishment of a Nevada Section to include the entire State was secured from the Board of Directors of the Institute. The formal installation took place at 10 A.M. on May 18, Mr. William L. Saunders officiating. The Honorable Emmet D.. Boyle, Governor of Nevada (and a member of the Nevada Section), made the address of welcome. Using a small scale laboratory pilot plant a series of tests have been conducted with the aim of investigating the influence of the zinc/acid ratio on the efficiency of zinc electrodeposition from an acidic sulphate solution. The results have shown that current efficiency is increased as the zinc/acid ratio is increased with no evidence of an optimum zinc/acid ratio. However the choice of a zinc/acid ratio for full scale operations must be a compromise between other parameters, spent electrolyte acidity and power efficiency, which also impact upon plant performance. The effect of various impurities has also been monitored and antimony, nickel and tin have been shown to be deliterious to current efficiency.

The demand for high-grade iron ore has increased the importance of beneficiation of low-grade iron ores. The captive mines of Tata Steel Limited, India has reserves of Banded Haematite Jasper (BHJ) ore assayed 40% Fe, 40% SiO2 and <1% Al2O3. QEMSCAN study has revealed haematite and quartz as a major iron bearing and gangue mineral phases respectively. Liberation characteristics have showed 80% liberation can be obtained at particle size below 10µm. In the present study, reverse cationic froth flotation of BHJ using ether diamines is explored in Denver-D12 flotation cell. Polynomial response surface regression equation coupled with six-factor Box-Behnken design of experiments is used to generate the correlation between process separation efficiency and flotation parameters. Flotation studies of BHJ indicated that concentrate of 62% Fe can be achieved with 62% Fe recovery from Jig concentrate at optimum conditions. The “Functional Performance Equation for Ball Milling” was first presented in 1988. It now has been used successfully in more than a dozen mineral processing plants. This powerful, yet simple tool provides a new level of understanding of closed circuit grinding. It shows how grinding circuit efficiency is in reality comprised of two distinct efficiencies. It demonstrates how circuit production rate is related, collectively, to these two efficiencies, mill energy input, and the grindability of the ore. It links circuit performance to design and operating variables that can be manipulated, and creates an effective strategy for making plant improvements. This paper covers the derivation and industrial validation of this equation. As part of an engineering and management system that also incorporates suitable metrics and process control, other operators can now use this tool to make improvements and to manage the performance of their grinding operations with clarity and confidence.

The vapor pressures of FeCI2 and ZnC12 in the FeCl2-ZnCl2 system were measured by the transpiration method at 873K and 917K. The vapor pressure data were interpreted to indicate the formation of complex ions in the FeCl2-ZnCl2 melts. It is presumed that the complex molecule FeZnCl4 as well as FeCI2 and ZnCI2 exists in the vapors in equilibrium with molten FeCl2-ZnCl2 mixtures. The activities in the FeCl2-ZnCI2 system are shown a negative deviation from Raoult&apos;s law. These results suggest the formation of complex ions such as ZnCl42- in molten FeCI2-ZnCI2 mixtures.

The Martha Mine is an open cut operation situated in the midst of Waihi town which has been operating since 1987. Since then it has produced some 700,000 ounces (oz) of gold and 4,000,000 oz of silver from an epithermal vein system. It was previously worked by underground methods from 1880 to 1952 to a depth of 600 m producing 5 million ounces (Moz) of gold and 30 Moz of silver. The licensed reserves are scheduled to be mined out early in the year 2001. An additional economic resource of over 750,000 oz of gold has been identified which can be accessed by deepening the pit a further 50 m along the main Martha vein. This would extend the mine life to the year 2007. Applications were lodged on 4 July 1997 for the necessary resource consents, discharge permits and variations for the current Mining Licence conditions. The extension project requires approval from the District Council, Regional Council and the Ministry of Commerce. The consent and permitting process is extensive because of the urban setting of the mine. An approach to keep the extension as similar as possible to the current operations was adopted to give the community and authority confidence in the proposed extension. This paper summarises the extension detail and the permitting requirements it has had to address despite the extension being "more of the same". The permitting process has been exhaustive with little recognition of the standards already achieved in protecting the environment which are recognised worldwide.

The Onahama No.3 tankhouse started commercial operation in early 1973, with the capacity of 8,500 metric tons per month. When the No.3 tankhouse was constructed, the starter sheet stripping section was rebuilt at the No.2 tankhouse and electrolyte purification section was expanded. The previous AIME paper in 1976 described the design principles of the No.3 tankhouse and its layout, This paper describes the starter sheet stripping machine in the No.2 tankhouse and the electrodes handling system in the No.3 tankhouse and all these equipments were developed for the operation of the No.3 tankhouse. A Hazelette continuous casting machine was also introduced in order to cast thin anodes with accurate shape. Owing to the adoption of thin anodes, gold, silver and copper inventory is reduced by 40%. Jumbo tanks and newly developed mechanical equipments were adopted and no work on cells during pulling up operation was achieved. Using thin anodes with accurate shape, inspection work was completely abolished while maintaining high current efficiency and high cathode quality. Labor cost was reduced by 70% and only six operaters can produce? 8,500 metric tons of cathodes per month. The same new electrolysis process is appreciated and has been used as a newly built independent tankhouse by Kidd Creek Mines Ltd., in Canada in 1981 with excellent results

This paper describes research being undertaken by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) which is designed to assist the continuous miner operator and section foreman in the performance of their jobs. The project will initially provide visual assistance to the miner operator, and later will semi-automate the mining (cutting) process. Using a technique known as "RF tagging," the project will also provide real-time or near-real-time information about the performance of the loading and hauling units to the section foreman, allowing him to quickly detect problems and take action where appropriate. The project is based upon the application of currently available technology, and the first phase is scheduled for in-mine testing within the next year.

IN 1952, prompted by the great demand of the Canadian drilling and foundry industries for sodium bentonite, the Geological Department of Magnet Cove Barium Corporation, Limited began an extensive search for bentonite deposits throughout western Canada. Their efforts were rewarded in 1958, when substantial deposits of high quality material were found approximately 100 miles southeast of Edmonton, Alberta. The bentonite material, a part of the Edmonton formation in the Upper Cretaceous, is located approximately nine miles south of the town of Rosalind. The land where the bentonite lies has in places .been eroded by stream and glacial action to form a wide gully, convenient for strip mining methods (see Figure 1). The bentonite bed is almost flat-lying, dipping to the southwest at approximately 12 feet per mile. The main bed is 8 to. 10 feet thick and is covered with 15 to 25 feet of overburden. Before stripping, the area is drilled and sampled to evaluate the quantity and quality of the bentonite.

While calcium ferrite slags have been successfully used in continuous copper converting for the last 30 years, ferrous calcium silicate slag was proposed about 8 years ago as an additional alternative for copper smelting. Although both slags are normal extensions of each other their phase relations have not been completely clarified. In this paper the liquidus relations of both slags have been quantified at various areas that cover both of them. The existing experimental data have been first reviewed and discussed in relation to the solidification procedure. An original physical model is then used to predict various diagrams of the liquidus surface of both slags. It is shown that the ternary liquidus diagrams normally used for FeOx-SiO2-CaO system are not suitable for industrial slags. The new model diagrams of Fe/CaO versus SiO2 and Fe/SiO2 versus CaO as well as Fe/CaO versus Temperature and Fe/SiO2 versus temperature are proven to be much more convenient for ferrite and ferrous calcium silicate slags. Based on these diagrams the effect of SiO2 and CaO on the melting temperature is quantified. The effect of Cu2O is also quantified through the model. Some Fe/CaO versus Cu2O and Fe/SiO2 versus CaO at various copper contents are predicted and the results show good agreement with the experimental data. It is also shown that in the presence of liquid copper, Cu2O is dissolved in the slag depending on the oxidation degree of the system and might lower the liquidus temperature. This paper presents some results obtained from research on long-term subsidence over and near chain pillar systems - the area available to long-term subsidence in longwall operations. Although the long-term subsidence for most longwall operations is insignificant, it does exist in some cases. In the cases that showed significant long-term subsidence, it was found that the development process could be expressed by an exponential decaying function. The stability factor of the chain pillar system and the potential for long-term subsidence are the two most important factors that control the magnitude and development characteristics of the long-term subsidence process.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the current literature on the use of calcium chloride and ligninsulfonates as dust suppressants with respect to potential adverse effects on health or the environment. Calcium chloride poses little internal hazard to man and animals, but toxicity to vegetation in and around the area of application should be expected. The effects, however, should be considerably less than those observed from using calcium chloride as a road deicer. Except for trout, ligninsulfonates seem to pose little direct systemic toxicity problems in aquatic organisms, animals and man or any problem with local vegetation. Because of a greater volume of information on its use and effects, calcium chloride is recommended over ligninsulfonates.

The Burrell Can1 is a thin, steel, tubular shell filled with aerated concrete that is used as a roof support in coal mines. The Can height is always shorter than the mining entry, so it is capped with wooden timbers and wedges when it is installed. This combination of the Can and the wooden header is a standing support system that is designed to yield in a controlled manner and exhibit a constant yield, or elastic-plastic behavior. The Burrell Can is capable of withstanding 20 in or more of vertical convergence and 15 in or more of horizontal displacement. Because of this exceptional ability to sustain load through extended convergence and displacement, it is one of the most robust standing supports in use today. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted testing on seventeen Burrell Cans in 1995, during development of the support where the ratio of the height to the diameter, or the aspect ratio, was between 2:1 and 4:1. Based on the results of that testing, it was suggested that the standard aspect ratio of the Can be less than 5:1. This suggestion is intended to preserve the overall stability of the Can, which will help to maintain the initial stiffness and prevent load shedding. Recently, the necessity of the aspect ratio has been questioned, and this issue will be addressed in this paper. Since the initial development and introduction, more than 130 tests of the Can have been conducted at the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS), and 25 of those specimens had aspect ratios greater than 5:1. The 18-in-diameter by 10-ft-tall specimens had the largest aspect ratio, 6.67:1.However, the aspect ratio is not the only parameter that affects the performance characteristics of the Can. Multiple factors, such as the use of different wood species, the use of different header or footer configurations, and the use of pedestals, as well as biaxial loading conditions can also decrease the stiffness and capacity of the Can. Data from full-scale tests that include these other factors are analyzed to show that the initial stiffness is primarily affected by the roof and floor contact configurations. Furthermore, load shedding is more likely to occur or begin earlier when the aspect ratio is greater than 5:1 and one or more of the other factors are present.

During a recent phase study of a natural gas, two stable equilibrium liquid phases were observed at temperatures below —200°F and pressures above 200 psi. This paper reviews the published literature on the occurrence of multiple equilibrium liquid phases and presents analytical data for the vapor and two equilibrium liquid phases of the liquefied natural gas at five experimental conditions. In addition, data for 30 conditions of two-phase equilibria are included. INTRODUCTION The low-temperature phase behavior of gases, most of which contained helium, has been investigated in the laboratories of the Helium Activity for many years. Since 1952, experimental studies of these systems have been continuous as part of the research program at Amarillo, Tex. Because of their value to private industries interested in participating in the Helium Conservation Program, several "Open File" reports containing phase equilibria data for heliurn-bearing natural gases have already been released by the Helium Activity. A paper containing information on the general phase behavior, operating criteria and extensive vapor-liquid data for two helium-containing systems was recently published.2 Additional publications presenting experimental data on the phase relationships of various gas systems are now in process and will be available in the near future. PREVIOUS EXPERIMENTAL WORK Although the formation of multiple liquids has been reported for various systems, to our knowledge this paper is the only substantiated evidence of a vapor-liquid-liquid equilibria in a naturally occurring gas. In 1940, Vink, Ames, and others13 reported the presence of two liquid phases in a hydrocarbon system consisting of mixtures of crude oils, solvents and natural gas. Eilerts and co-workers; published data on the recombined fluids from a gas-condensate well. This condensed gas, containing approximately 76 per cent methane and 24 per cent ethane-plus, exhibited two distinct liquid phases. Weinaug and Bradley 14 observed "unusual" phase behavior in a reservoir mixture. These workers postulated that the anomalous phase behavior was due to the "imminent formation of a second liquid phase". Botkin, Reamer, Sage and Lacey 1 studied two California crude oils that exhibited multiple phases. Kohn and Kuratal0 recently reported two equilibrium liquid phases in the methane-hydrogen sulfide system. Roof and Crawfordl1 and Eakin, et a16 also have reported experiments with binary systems that formed two stable equilibrium liquid phases. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE A U. S. Bureau of Mines Phase Equilibrium Apparatus was used in conducting this study. The apparatus and procedures employed in its operation have been previously described3 and will not be repeated in detail ill this report. Briefly, the apparatus consists of a windowed cell which can be maintained within ±0.5°F for temperatures between room temperature arid -320°F. Pressure within the cell can be maintained within 0.1 per cent of gauge reading up to 800 psig. Equilibrium vapor and liquid samples are obtained in special containers4 for analysis by a mass spectrometer. Although the accuracy of the analyzer is about ±0.1 mol per cent, the reproducibility of the phase-equilibrium apparatus is considered relatively poor. Values reported from methane and nitrogen are considered accurate to ±l.0 and ±0.6 mol per cent. Data for ethane-plus in the vapor are accurate within 0.2 mol per cent; liquid-phase data for this aggregate compolnent are accurate within 1.5 mol per cent. For helium in the vapor phase, the analytical data are accurate within 0.2 mol per cent; liquid-phase analyses for this component were obtained by the charcoal adsorption method described by Frost8 and are accurate within 0.006 mol per cent. All of these references to the accuracy of reported values are conservative estimates based upon a statistical treatment of reproducibility data obtained with the apparatus.

An expression for the diffusion coefficient of inlerstitial atoms in the bcc lattice is derived which takes account of jumps between tetrahedral and octahedral interstices. The results are applied to the case of carbon diffusion in iron to find values for jump frequencies of the types, octahedral-tetrahedral, tetra-hedral-tetrahedral, and tetrahedral-octahedral. ThERE has been renewed discussion1-5 concerning the mechanism of diffusion of interstitial atoms in the bcc lattice. This lattice has both octahedral and tetrahedral interstices, and it has been pointed out that the interstitial atoms may make jumps of the octahedral-octahedral type, hereafter called o-o, octahedral-tetrahedral, o-t, and tetrahedral-tetrahedral, t-t. Doubt has been cast on the applicability of snoek&apos;s8 model for internal friction to some interstitial migrations in bcc lattices wherein he proposed 0-0 jumps as the principal mechanism of migration. Also, the anomalous excess diffusion of carbon in iron at high temperatures4 has been ascribed to t-t jumps,2,3 even though the sites normally occupied are octahedral. In this paper an expression is derived for the diffusion coefficient, taking account of the three types of jump mentioned. The relationship of the coefficient to the corresponding internal friction relaxation time is found for the limiting case corresponding to Snoek&apos;s model. These results are applied to the case of carbon in iron. In Fig. 1, the structure is shown with the locations of the interstices. The current state of the copper industry was the topic of discussion at the Copper 99 — Cobre 99conference held Oct. 10 to 13, 1999, in Phoenix, AZ. More than 700 copper-industry engineers, executives, consultants, academics, vendors and other interested parties attended. This successful and well-organized conference was the fourth in a series of international conferences devoted to the mineral processing and extractive metallurgy of copper. The 1999 meeting marked the first time that the conference was held in the United States. The meeting was co-organized by the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS); the Chilean Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMCH) and the Metallurgical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum(CIM). The meeting was also sponsored by The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration Inc.
