The Honor Roll includes the names of all members of the Institute Whom we know to have been on active military duty it the date of compilation, Mar. 5, 1919. Despite our efforts to have this list accurate and complete, some of our members who have been rendering military service are probably left off because of the fact that we have not been informed of their military connection. The list of men in military service has been compiled with great difficulty owing to the modesty of the members, who in their patriotism began their service but neglected to send us notice. In 1918, We published a separate Honor Roll of the Institute in which we included a list entitled "On active duty in other departments of the service" which contained the names of members who were rendering important emergency service to the Government other than in the Army. This list is entirely omitted this year because any list We might compile for this purpose would be entirely inadequate and must inevitably do injustice to a large number of our members who have been devoting great time and making many sacrifices for the benefit of the government along lines not within our ken. It is not too much to say that almost all our membership in this country has been, more or less directly, doing its uttermost for the successful prosecu¬tion of the war. The active work of many of these members we are Well aware of, as is also the rest of the civilized world. Faithful and wholehearted efforts on the part of many other members we have not been informed of, so that any list would be both incomplete and unsatisfactory.

Laboratory tests showed that ozone can destroy free cyanide and weakly complexed cyanide (copper and zinc cyanides). The iron cyanide complexes were resilient to ozonation but they were effectively eliminated by precipitation with Fe (II) ions under controlled pH conditions. Tests carried out with effluents from a number of gold mills confirmed the results obtained previously in the laboratory. The industrial samples contained cyanide in the form of free cyanide and also complex copper, zinc and iron cyanides. Solutions that contained up to 184 mg/L total cyanide, after the ozone treatment analyzed only 2-3 mg/L dissociable cyanide and 50-90 mg/L CN(t) (accounted for by iron complexes). After precipitation with ferrous ions total cyanide was reduced below 1.5 mg/L. For most solutions ozone consumption ranges from 3 to 6 g per g of cyanide destroyed. However, certain impurities (such as SCN and S203 ), present in some effluents, increase ozone consumption and make it more difficult to reduce copper concentration to satisfactory levels.

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining-maps and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining-reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified; indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will he welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

The experiences of exploration crews with mineral land acquisition could be graphed to show a correlation with the natural law that everything tends to become more so. A single step, such as that of taking a series of deep soil samples, is sometimes delayed until some sense can be made from floating unpatented claims which are obscure in orientation as well as position-placer claims, overlapping lode claims, location posts with empty Prince Albert cans and claims with no apparent assessment work for ten years. Add to this some patented claims without monuments, a state or federal withdrawal area which may or may not invalidate preexisting claims, a loosely defined tunnel site, and some ranchers who understandably resent the separation of surface rights from mineral rights.

Some important mineral fields are referred to in discussing the formation of placer deposits in Australia.Testing methods include boring by hand, with percussion rigs, with auger and pit digging drills, and by vibro drilling.Sampling errors are minimized by the use of correct techniques and equipment for boring, sampling and sample dressing. A hypothetical set of data is used to demonstrate the final process of evaluation, and somerelevant taxation provisions are discussed.

Geosynclines have been well studied for many years, but very little has been written about the concepts of sedimentary basins in spite of the vast amount of data available. They have been regarded, perhaps, as well- understood intuitively, and therefore not worthy of study. Many of the fundamental concepts of geology were developed during the 19th Century with the construction of coal mines, canals and railways. It was a happy chance that led railway engineers in the early days to think that trains could not climb any but the smallest gradient, so, in Britain at -least, numerous railway cuttings and tunnels were made. These exposed to view and study, in a better form than Nature usually provides, a great deal of interesting geology. Because of the lack of literature about the concepts of sedimentary basins, it is not possible to be sure what the early geologists thought. It seems that sedimentary basins were regarded as recording a history of subsidence during the early stages, when a transgressive sequence accumulated; and a history of uplift during the later stages, when a regressive sequence accumulated. It seemed axiomatic that the age of folding and faulting was younger than the rocks folded or Faulted.

The Mineral King Mine, owned and operated by Sheep Creek Mines is located in the Purcell mountain range of southeastern British Columbia. Production of lead and zinc concentrates commenced in 1954 some 60 years after the initial discovery. Low cost mining methods have been employed to extract 16,0C'O tons of ore monthly from large ore bodies formed by replacement in limestone. Extensive areas in the limestone are yet to be explored and success in the search for new ore bodies is anticipated.

[Apparent progress in economy at petroleum refineries, as measured by the average amount of hest units required to refine a barrel or crude oil, received a set-back in 1938, when the average rose to 567,000 B. t. u., compared with 562,000 B. t. u. in 1937 (see fig. 1). The primary factor in the rise in average heat requirement's per barrel of crude oil refined in 1938 was the decline in total runs to Invariably the average requirement increases when crude inn to stills decline, and vice versa. In other words, annual gains in fuel efficiency at refineries are masked by the degree to which the capacity is utilized. Additional crude runs give lower average heat requirements in two grays first, because they are mane with the expenditure of cc-comparatively small amounts s of auxiliary heat, and, second, because additional runs generally represent simple topping operations. In 1938 crude runs to stills declined 1.6 percent (from 1,183,440,000 barrels in 1937 to 1,165,015,000 barrels in 1938), but the total heat consumption declined only 0.4 percent, or from. 663,866 billion B. t. u. in 1777 to 660, 56 billion in 1938.]

The natural effect of large ingot-size should be to increase segregation. I have previously pointed1 to the excessive segregation in many large ingots as tending to confirm this, but I have shown that in case of ingots less than 16 in. square this expected effect of ingot-size is liable to masked by that of Note.—The "maximum enrichment" of each ingot, i.e., the excess of the richest spot over the average of the whole ingot, is first calculated in percentage of that average. The average of the maximum enrichment of the several ingots of a given group is the abscissa in Fig. 1. The number beside each spot tells the number of cases which that spot represents. Under these conditions we should expect that, if large ingot-size really does tend to increase segregation, this effect would be shown by taking the average of large numbers of cases, so that the effects of these other variables might off-set and cancel each other.

The smelting plant and equipment at Mount Isa, as originally designed and built, was described by J. M. Callow (1) *.F. A. Forward (2) described alterations and additions to the plant and discussed the metallurgy of mixed carbonate-sulphide concentrates at Mount Isa, prior to 1933, in the Proceedings of this Institute.In 1933, A. F. McAskill (3) gave full mechanical details of the plant in a paper presented to the Institution of Engineers, Aust.FLOW SHEETSFig. No. 1 represents the present general flow sheet. This report by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, presents several practical and inexpensive types of rock mechanics instrumentation for ground control around longwall panels. Application of these critical parameters, determined by this instrumentation, to the design and modification of rational longwall-mining systems is also discussed. In order to design or select an optimum mine structure or system, realistic and precise values of the design parameters must be determined in operating mines by measuring (1) existing ground stresses, (2) mining induced load transfer, and (3) strata movements as well as deformation moduli and rock strengths. Based on these parameters, rational and realistic criteria for mine design can be established by conducting case studies. It was found that several basic design parameters can be easily measured or determined in situ with simple, inexpensive, and practical instruments such as hydraulic borehole pressure cells, automatic recording convergence meters, automatic recording multiple-anchor-point extensometers, and hydraulic pressure recorders.

The martensitic transformation can be initiated by elastic stresses at temperatures above M. in a steel containing 20 pct Ni and 0.5 pct C. Shear strains and normal tensile strains acting on a potential habit plane promote the transformation but compressive strains oppose it. THE strain sensitivity of the martensitic transformation has long been recognized. It is now well known that martensite formation can be induced by plastic deformation at temperatures below, and not too far above, the M, point.' However, the exact role of elastic vs. plastic strains and of the concomitant stresses has proved to be a very elusive matter. Many investigators2-' of the steel hardening reaction have made use of the stresses resulting from volume changes to account for such observations as the existence of retained austenite and its variation across the section of a bar, the change in the amount of retained austenite with quenching rate, and the self-stopping nature of the transformation when the cooling is stopped. The effect of applied strain as an independent variable has been studied in 70 pct Fe-30 pct Ni alloys by Scheil7 and McReynolds.8 Some data are also available for lithium and Li-Mg alloys,9 Cu-Zn,10 Cu-Sn and Cu-A1 alloys," and aus-tenitic stainless steels."-" It has been found that martensite formation can be induced isothermally, even at temperatures above M,, by mechanical deformation of the parent phase. The competitive nature of plastic yielding by slip and by the martensitic reaction has been depicted by Scheil.7 Basically, Scheil postulated that: 1—at temperatures not too far above M, (where austenite is less stable than martensite), a critical resolved shear stress (within the elastic range) is required to promote the transformation to martensite; 2—at and below M,, the austenite lattice becomes mechanically, as well as thermodynamically, unstable and shears over spontaneously into martensite without the application of external stress; and 3—at temperatures sufficiently far above M8, the critical resolved shear stress for martensite formation increases to a level above that required for slip, and plastic flow then supersedes the transformation when external stress is applied. Scheil's concepts were tested by McReyno1ds8 ho found no change in the elastic moduli (measured both statically and dynamically) of 71 pct Fe-29 pct Ni alloys in the vicinity of the M, temperature. Since the moduli did not approach zero or become negative on cooling to M,, it was concluded that the austenite lattice does not become mechanically unstable at M2, as postulated by Scheil. McReynolds also reported that M, is not raised by elastic stresses. Accordingly, plastic deformation was considered to stimulate the transformation by generating martensite nuclei in the distorted regions of the parent phase. The above issues with regard to the role of applied stress require clarification, if a basic understanding of the martensitic transformation is to be obtained. For example, in the reaction-path theory,'"," it is postulated that strain embryos exist in the austenite that provide part of the activation energy for the nucleation process. These embryos are visualized to be regions of localized strain in which the atoms in the austenite lattice are displaced part way along the path to their ultimate positions in the martensite. FLUORSPAR is a nonmetallic mineral aggregate or mass containing a sufficient quantity of fluorite (CaF2) to be of commercial interest. It has only moderate value per unit of weight and its cost as a percentage of the cost of finished consumer products is nearly negligible. Nevertheless, it has wide and great industrial importance. In periods of national emergency it is a mineral without which many very necessary manufacturing processes would be greatly handicapped; a few could not exist. Fluorite contains 51.1 pct calcium and 48.9 pct fluorine. Industrial grades of fluorspar prepared for the consumer normally contain from 85 to 98 pct fluorite, depending on the use. The ores may contain as little as 30 pct fluorite, depending on many factors such as accessibility to transportation and markets, character of ore, and prices. Fluorite is a lustrous, glasslike mineral, generally translucent to transparent; it may be clear and colorless or range in color from slightly bluish through various shades of violet, amethyst, purple, green, and yellow. It crystallizes in the isometric system and possesses perfect octahedral cleavage. Commonly it occurs in masses of very pure crystal- line material with aggregates of cubical crystals in open spaces, but - it is also found in fine to coarse granular form. Banded veins and masses with fibrous, radiating structure occur locally. It is usually found associated more or less intimately with other minerals and rocks, from which it must be separated for commercial use. The specific gravity of fluorite is 3.18 and the hardness is 4 in the Mohs scale, compared with 7 for quartz and 3 for calcite. It is distinguished from calcite by its failure to effervesce with dilute hydrochloric acid. Heated with sulphuric acid, it gives off fumes of hydro- fluoric acid, which etch glass.22,25,33.34,35.41

"The current increase in gold price may presage a resurgence of gold milling plants in Canada similar to that of the thirties. Because the industry has been at a low ebb for almost two decades, future operating responsibilities will likely devolve upon personnel with limited cyanidation experience. My comments, which may seem elementary to experienced operators, are directed towards these industry newcomers to highlight operational features in cyanidation which forty years' experience has shown me to 0e of importance. A brief review of what actually takes place in a cyanide circuit may help give a better understanding of the topics to be discussed.These will include: (1) expose the gold (2) dissolve the gold(3) make solid/liquid separation(4) recover the gold from solution.1. Expose the GoldThe chemical key to gold recovery by cyanidation lies in the ready solubility of the metal in a relatively weak solution (0.04%-0.075% NaCN equivalent by weight) of calcium or sodium cyanide. Obviously, dissolution cannot start unless the cya1ide is in contact with the gold. As an analogy, the yolk of a hard-boiled egg can oe taken to represent the gold particle and the egg white and shell, the surrounding gangue or sulphide host. As the sl1ell and white must be fractured to expose the yolk, similarly the surrounding gorngue or sulphide host must be broken or fractured to enable the cyanide solution to contact the gold."

Longwall mining has existed in Utah for more than half a century. Much of this mining occurred at depths of cover that significantly exceed those encountered by most other U.S. longwall operations. Deep cover causes high ground stress, which can combine with geology to create a coal burst hazard. Nearly every longwall mine operating within the Utah’s Book Cliffs coalfield has been affected by coal bursts.

The compilation of the sampling nomogram is an essential tool in the optimization of a sampling protocol and allows the operator to track the change in relative variance of the sampling error (the Fundamental sampling error) during steps of comminution and mass reduction in the process of recovery of the aliquot for analysis. The data required for the compilation of the nomogram are centred on the sampling constant K and the exponent, alpha (a) of the nominal fragment size. Five methods for establishing K have been identified, but two of them, the duplicate sampling analysis method and the heterogeneity test method purport to provide such constant. The step by step procedure for each of these two methods was examined using broken ores from three mines, Mponeng mine, Kloof mine, and Lily mine. Two of these mines (Mponeng and Kloof) are typical Witwatersrand-type gold mines, and the third is an Archaean-type shear related gold deposit situated in the Barberton Greenstone belt. The results suggest that the factor K derived using the heterogeneity test is very accurate, but applies only to a single size fraction in the spectrum of comminuted materials. The calculation of gold grain sizes using this method appear to be too small and do not conform with the results from detailed mineralogical studies. The factors K and alpha derived using the duplicate series analysis are appropriate for use across a wide spectrum of comminution sizes and also provide realistic gold grain sizes, comparable with the equivalent circular diameter of gold grains identified in mineralogical studies of the ores.

Plenary SpeechI have given considerable thought about what I might say to such a group of professionals, given that I am not an extractive metallurgist. It was immediately apparent that I would quickly be out of my depth if I tried to present some technical aspect of extractive metallurgy. So, instead I thought it might be useful to review the subject from the minerals business management point of view in order to improve understanding for the extractive metallurgist who some times finds it difficult to comprehend directions being given by management.

It is probable that the first commercial production of coal in Ohio was for the supply of Wheeling, before mines were opened at that place. This coal came from Pipe Creek in Belmont County,l where the seam was exposed a short distance above the river. This movement could not have lasted more than a few years, because coal was being mined at Wheeling in 1818, and probably before that.2 Mining began in Tuscarawas County in 1810 and in Perry County in 1816, and has been followed steadily since then. In the eighteen twenties the Pomeroy field in Meigs County, Jackson County, and the northern Ohio field in Summit County commenced production. All of the early data available are given in Table 57. No early official reports were made, but after 1859 the Secretary of State published statistics of production, admittedly inaccurate, by counties, and under various officials these have been continued to the present day. Ohio has never published statistics about coal in smaller units than the county; no reports of individual properties have ever been collected. The period from 1800 to 1885 includes the opening of practically all of the coal fields of the state, although those of eastern Ohio were not large producers at its end. During this time the use of raw block coal in blast furnaces had begun and ended, and at the end, coke was nearly the universal fuel for this purpose. Much of the coal traffic on the Ohio River and its main tributaries originated in the necessity of a fuel supply for Cincinnati and other down-river cities. This traffic started in 1794, and few records of it are available until many years later; in 1846 records of the movement to Cincinnati began and have been maintained with increasing thoroughness, and represent one of the most complete records of such a traffic extant anywhere. As these data show the originating fields of most of the coals used there, the available figures to 1885 have been collected in Table 16.
