"Heredity"1 in cast iron has been a subject of much discussion. Numerous experimenters have found that the properties of gray iron may vary greatly without corresponding variations in composition or thermal treatment. The main structural difference in such cases is in the size and distribution of the graphite flakes and the explanations given usually attribute this difference to some chemical element not shown by ordinary analysis or to some physical factor, such as inclusions in the melt. It cannot be said that any of these theories is completely satisfactory. Much remains to be learned about cast iron and for this reason a study of the material was undertaken as a part of the program of fundamental research at Battelle Memorial Institute. A review of the literature indicated that very little systematic work had been done on the mechanism of freezing in cast iron. The experiments described below are largely concerned with that problem. Normal and "Dendritic" Cast Iron As examples of variation in type of structure, photomicrographs of two test bars of cast iron are shown (Figs. 1 and 2) and the composition and properties are given in Table 1. Both are common, unalloyed gray iron. Test bar No. 13 has normal graphite flakes while No. 49 has very fine, lacy graphite arranged in a dendritic pattern, the matrix in both being pearlite. These two types of cast iron are well known to foundry-men and need no detailed description.

For something over two years past a new development of the open-hearth process has been in operation at the works of the Prager Eisenindustrie-Gesellschuft at Eladno, in Bohemia. It was devised and perfected by Mr. Ernst Bertrand, general superintendent,, and Mr. Otto Thiel, steel-works superintendent. The results which the inventors wished to obtain were to increase the product per furnace, to reduce the amount of refractories and additions used, to enable a poorer and more varied quality of stock to be employed, to improve the quality of the material produced and to render the control of the operations and product more certain. In all of these objects they have been successful, and have thereby considerably reduced the cost of manufacture and increased the value of the finished material. The Plant. The plant at Kladno consists of one 12-ton and one 20-ton furnace. Through an incident of construction the smaller furnace stands some distance behind and to one side of the larger furnace, and at a height of about 10 feet above it. The furnaces are in the same building as the Bessemer converters, and the metal is handled in the same casting-house by means of a locomobile ladle-crane. The relative position of the furnaces suggested the experiments by which the process was developed, and also enabled it to be thoroughly tested. Much valuable and practical work has been done in this plant, although it is not as convenient and suitable as one especially designed for the process would be. THE writer has been interested in determining the mineralogic dis-tribution of silver in the base-metal ore of the Ground Hog mine of the Asarco Mining Co. in the Central mining district of New Mexico.1 This ore consists of a varitextured mixture of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena and pyrite in a quartz gangue. The average ore contains 14 per, cent of zinc, 9.5 per cent of lead, 5 per cent of copper, and 10 oz. of silver per ton. Generally it is accepted that the silver in ores of this type, in which no definite silver minerals can be recognized, is contained in the base-metal minerals. Published assays of pure mineral specimens from many dis-tricts show that each of the base-metal minerals contributes in some degree to the total silver content of the ores, and to determine the pro-portionate amount contributed by each mineral in any specific ore it has been the practice to assay selected specimens of each mineral, the purity of which has been determined microscopically. There being no such assays available for the Ground Hog ore, and it being impract cable to have enough of them made to give average results, the writer resorted to a mathematical attack upon composite assays of large quantities of ore and concentrates. Surprising results were obtained, and it is the threefold purpose of this paper to present these results, to describe the mathe-matical method used, and to point out the value of using this method even when assays of pure specimens are available.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of a full-scale rod mill. Appropriate numerical techniques are developed for the experimental determination of the parameters of a dynamic mathematical model from steady state data. The results confirm that this full-scale rod mill behaves similarly to laboratory-scale ball mills for which results have previously been obtained. It is noted, however, that although the model presented is adequate for predicting over-all particle size distributions, the size distributions of individual components of a multicomponent ore cannot be predicted.

INTRODUCTION The Climax Mine is a property of Climax Molybdenum Company, a division of AMAX Inc. Climax is located in the central part of the Colorado Mineral Belt on the west slope of the Tenmile Range, Lake County, Colorado at 3,425' m. above sea level. Climax Mine, the largest single producer of molybdenum in the free world, has been a cornerstone of mining in the State of Colorado for many years. Before molybdenum was known, the early hunters of gold and silver laid their hands on the outcrops of the Climax deposit and left it as low quality lead or graphite without much value. Today, 44,000 TPD of ore is extracted from the heart of Bartlett Mountain. The molybdenum, separated from the ore, is vital for mankind, being used for everything from fertilizer to fine components of aerospace ships, because of its valuable physical and chemical properties. The operations at Climax have never remained static. Constant demand for the "gray gold", and technological advancements, have converted Climax into an "open book of technology", where learning the still-hidden secrets of mining is a continuing process. (All figures related to tons are metric tons) BRIEF HISTORY The mine produced its first molybdenum ore in 1918. It was shut down in 1919, resumed production in 1924, and has been in continuous production since that time. During World War 11, a peak of 20,000 tons per day was reached, then tonnage dropped from 1945 to 1950. Since 1951, production has been in- creasing, reaching a peak of 46,000 tons per day during the month of June, 1980. Early mining used shrinkage stoping. Block caving using the grizzly system was introduced in the early 1930's. Caving methods were improved through empirical studies of rock behavior and by trial and error, evolving a very efficient mining method by the late 1940's. This form of continuous retreat panel caving, with small modifications, is still used today, and has made the Climax Mine one of the biggest underground mines in the world. The Climax Mine, synonymous with molybdenum, was essentially an underground mine until 1973 when the open pit was introduced. Since then, both mining methods have operated successfully. Current production is 60% from underground, and the remaining from the open pit. Climax has been in continuous operation for 56 years, and as of December 31, 1980, more than 386 million tons of ore have been mined. The orebody is not fully defined, and at the present mining rate, the known life span of the mine will be to the year 2020. GEOLOGY The Climax deposit is a large low-grade porphyry molybdenum deposit somewhat similar to porphyry copper deposits, with a well- mineralized quartz molybdenum stock work sys- tem. It lies within the pre-Cambrian granites and schists and the Tertiary Climax porphyry. The age of mineralization is thought to be mid-Tertiary and is characterized by fracture filling and replacement through silicification. The main economic mineral is molybdenum, with pyrite, cassiterite and wolframite as by-products. Fluorite and topaz also occur, but are not recovered at this

Trees are an essential ingredient of sound reclamation in nearly all surface mining regions. There are, however, possible problems in current reclamation regulations and practices which need to be evaluated and remedied. Recognition and accomodation of growth requirements for trees and other plants will greatly increase reclamation success. Surface mining encompasses a series of processes from a pre-mining baseline study to bond release following revegetation. Land owners, and society, have a great interest in subsequent plant growth on reclaimed areas and in future land values.

Use of clay-working machinery in the metallurgical industry is by no means new. Extrusion- agglomeration as a basic operation in the non-ferrous field has a history of more than 50 years. This article advocates using the technique in the ferrous field where it might serve a useful purpose in today's operations. Many of the processes involved in production of iron ores result in fine powders, with a considerable percentage running finer than 200 mesh. In many instances, mining and related processing operations are located far from furnace operations. Shipping the powdered ore is impractical since handling losses and furnace losses from dusting would be excessive and powdered material must be agglomerated. The agglomerate must withstand the handling involved in transportation and here the continuous pugmill-extruder can be used to form a strong dense product.

THE Annual Fall Meeting held in Chicago in conjunction with the celebration of a Centennial of Engineering brought forth a round of field trips and symposiums which did much to add to the store of information of the 240 who registered for the gathering. Instead of a scattered program, technical papers were grouped together in organized symposiums, where the particular importance of each report was enhanced by presentation in context. Despite the heavy accent on technical papers and informative field trips, those attending the meeting had ample time to enjoy the benefits of a visit to Chicago. The AIME dinner dance was held at the Palmer House, in the Red Lacquer Room. The Chicago Section played host Friday evening at dinner. The MBD held four sessions at the meeting headquarters, the Palmer House, September 4 and 5. Featuring the meetings was a review of taconite concentration and new theories on comminution. The first session opened with a paper on the Structural Features Which Effect the Concentration of Iron Formations, presented by F. J. Tolonen. The paper was centered upon the various members of the low grade iron formations of the separate Michigan districts. The study correlated macrostructure, microstructure, and concentration tests. [ ] Beneficiation Characteristics of Michigan Low Grade Iron Ores, presented by F. X. Tartaron, cochairman of the session, reviewed the work of his laboratory on the beneficiation of low grade ore taken from various strata of a deep shaft on the Marquette Range. The paper included data on flotation, gravity separation, magnetic separation, and combinations of these processes. The economics of low grade ore treatment generated great interest. Ty. Maki offered a compilation and correlation of field results with magnetic separators in ferrosilicon and magnetite medium recovery circuits. Following the morning session, 130 persons attended a luncheon, followed by a brief business meeting. Later, a film illustrating the grinding, separation, and pelletizing steps investigated by the Mines Experiment Bureau, was presented by H. H. Wade. T. E. Ban, and L. J. Erck gave a report on pelletizing which evoked much discussion. R. A. Limons presented a paper on the Mineralogy of Blast Furnace Sinter, for its author, H. M. Kraner. Friday sessions featured a new hypothesis for high speed drill rod milling and a new technical approach to comminution. Jack Myers commented that Consolidated's large rod mill was a hammer mill turned inside out. Steve Erickson described the use of Cyclones for Heavy Media Concentration of Iron Ore Fines. Bob Meaders gave a Progress Report on the Aerofall Mill. Shiou-Chuan Sun described an improved high frequency analyzer for studying the conductivity of suspensions of various minerals. L. A. Roe discussed a magnetic reflux condensor which enabled him to determine the degree of liberation of magnetic iron ores. Roy A. Johnson described a function of the hydroscilator in which the fan rake was eliminated in favor of a conical bottom. The Industrial Minerals Division sessions held September 5 and 6 and were well attended. The Friday morning session was particularly concerned with developments and advances in industrial minerals with special emphasis on the Chicago area. The first two papers dealt with transportation on the Great Lakes and fuel movement into the Chicago area. The third paper proved to be of great interest, turning the spotlight on the fairly new hydraulic mining methods introduced by a silica company in the Ottawa, Ill. field.

The price records of seven representative mineral commodities for the 68-year period 1890 through 1957 have been compiled and analyzed for significant trends. When these records are reduced to real prices in terms of dollars of constant purchasing power or to the purchasing power of industrial wages at average rates, a substantial overall fall in prices is revealed. This downtrend contradicts the widely held concept that heavy drafts on a mineral resource must lead to scarcity, reflected in rising prices. Three metals (aluminum, copper, and pig iron), two fuels (bituminous coal and petroleum), and two nonmetals (sulfur and cement) have been chosen because of their pre-eminence in their respective categories, their significance in an industrial economy, and the ready availability of their price records. It might be added that these seven commodities were selected before any price figures were compiled; none was selected or rejected to substantiate any preconceived notions as to price trends. The overall importance of the seven is demonstrated by the fact that, taken together, they composed over three-fourths of the value of all minerals produced in the U. S. in 1957. The first step in the analysis was to reduce the price records to a basis for significant comparisons. Two such comparisons have been made: 1) The quantities of each of the commodities that could have been purchased for an average hour's wage in each year, and 2) the unit price of each commodity through the years in terms of deflated dollars. These data are set forth in the accompanying table and two charts. The quantities of the mineral commodity purchasable with the average wage for one hour's work in all manufacturing industries through 1926 were based on annual average prices and on average annual wage rates determined by Paul H. Douglas and published in his "Real Wages in the United States, 1890-1926." The series was extended through 1957 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U. S. Department of Labor. Calculations based on these data show that the average worker could have purchased 1.28 lb of copper with his hourly wage in 1890, whereas his hourly wage would have purchased 8.11 lb in 1957, an increase of 633 pct in the 68-year period. An average hour's wage would have bought 10.85 gal of petroleum in 1890, compared with 33.04 gal in 1957. Even more spectacular is the increase in sulfur, of which 25.25 lb could have been purchased with the 1904 average hourly wage; 223.08 lb were purchasable with the wage in 1957—an increase of 883 pct. Comparable price data for sulfur are not available for years earlier than 1904. For every commodity, the calculations show an improvement in the wage earner's purchasing power in 1957 compared with the early years. Measuring purchasing power in terms of wages does not give an entirely fair picture of the availability of a commodity in an economy. When the efficiency of an economy changes and the balance shifts among such elements as raw-material production, manufacturing, and service trade, the economic significance of an hour's work changes. Partly to meet such criticism, but mostly to present another interesting measure of the response of minerals to changing market conditions, a second set of calculations has been made to deflate unit prices for the seven commodities into terms of 1954 dollars. To accomplish this adjustment to a common 1954 parity, the Gross National Product Price Deflator, developed by the Office of Business Economics, U. S. Department of Commerce, was used. Although the results of these calculations are not as striking as those based on labor's increasing purchasing power, nevertheless the declines outweigh the rises in the prices of the mineral commodities. In terms of these deflated prices, aluminum and sulfur are much cheaper today than in the early years; copper was substantially cheaper in 1957 than in 1890; pig iron and petroleum are little changed; and only bituminous coal and cement have increased substantially. Strangely, the two mineral commodities with the strongest reserve positions are the two to exhibit rising real prices. Now this apparent overall downtrend in prices has taken place during a period of almost fantastic increase in the demand for mineral products. The value of minerals consumed in the world during the period greatly exceeds all mineral consumption up to 1890. A stage has been reached in the U.S. in which 95 pct of the energy used is of mineral origin and in which machines, structures, roadways, communication facilities, and most other elements in the industrial economy are primarily of mineral origin. Even agricultural fertility is maintained, in large measure, by mineral fertilizers. A series published in Minerals Yearbook shows that the value of U. S. mineral products has risen from $615 million in 1890 to $18,000 million in 1957, a 29-fold increase. Even in deflated dollars, the increase has been eightfold, while population has expanded less than threefold. Not only are demands of the industrial nations— the U. S., countries of Western Europe, and Japan— increasing at rapid rates, but those countries with agrarian economies are calling themselves underdeveloped and clamoring to industrialize. The ever-expanding mineral requirements in the U. S. and throughout the world show no abatement. Mineral reserves frequently have been described as wasting assets. Much concern has been shown for future users, who have been pictured as finding themselves on a plundered planet. Conservationists have viewed the future with alarm and have demanded legislation and regulations to reduce the drain on mineral reserves.

In 1900, when. the public first heard of "secondary enrichment," the Butte chalcocite seemed clearly supergene. Mining, through successive regions of leached capping, bonanza sulfide, and sulfide less rich, had paused at lean bottom levels which, though chalcocite-bearing, suggested the waning of copper. The deepest chalcocite, at 1500 ft., was yet too shallow to disturb the supergene hypothesis. But, with deeper mining, lean levels yielded to fat ones. Here and there they showed, within the same vein, an inverted distribution, chalcopyrite above and chalcocite below. To the miners' astonishment, they carried chal-cocite, unaffected by cross faults, on an independent course to the depth of 2500 ft. The pattern of ore distribution, hitherto revealed only in fragments, was now appearing in perspective, and, in the depth of the chalcocite, was beginning to make Butte differ from all districts where the chalcocite is indubitably supergene. The idea of hypogene origin at length came into favor; by 1913, when Sales' advocated this origin, the argument had become a powerful one. This argument rested on field evidence; but, already, there was beginning to emerge microscopic evidence not included in this argument. Especially pertinent was the proof that (1) the deep chalcocite lies in-mixed with bornite, often microscopic; (2) the deep chalcocite often replaces bornite; and (3) replacement of bornite by chalcocite is accomplished more easily than that of pyrite, enargite, or chalcopyrite. In order to be able to design an adequate mine ventilation system it is necessary to understand how pollutant masses disperse into turbulent ventilation air streams. The mixing of gases and dusts with ventilating air, and dispersion of these pollutants in mine airways, are important flow or transfer problems. For the solution of such problems, the finite difference technique is often used. In this paper, numerical approximation schemes for the solution of the mass transfer problem have been developed using several explicit finite difference schemes. Results from these schemes have been compared with the analytical solution for spatial and time increments using the concept of Root Mean Square error. The comparison of various schemes reveals that the explicit finite difference schemes analyzed here give more accurate results at lower velocities, though the results are dependent on the spatial and time steps considered. At higher velocities the schemes tends to oscillate about the analytical solution. INTRODUCTION In mining, most of the mine air pollutants, such as respirable dust, methane, blasting fumes and diesel exhaust, are produced at the mine face and in haulageways. Injection of any of these pollutants in the mine ventilating air causes disturbances of the equilibrium state of the pollutant concentration of the ventilating air. The mixing of these gases and dusts with the ventilating air are typical examples of mass transfer processes. Pollutants are diluted by the stream of ventilating air flow along airways and discharged into the outside atmosphere of the mine through a return shaft. The dispersions of these pollutants in mine airways are important flow or transfer problems. Knowledge about pollutant sources, emission and transport of these pollutants are essential for ventilation planning and design to ensure good engineering control over air quality, quantity, and environmental conditions. Modeling of mass transfer phenomena in mine ventilation is largely based on extensive studies of turbulent dispersion in wind tunnels and the lower atmosphere of the earth. The general approach in the formulation of models lies in the recognition that these mass transfer phenomena can be conceptualized as a flow problem that can be solved by the general application of Taylor's theory (1954) of turbulent flow and diffusion with modification appropriate static and dynamic parameters. If the face zone is initially contaminated by a pollutant over a long section (e.g. instantaneous exposure of large gas accumulation, rapid methane release etc.), the process of decontaminating the mine workings can be regarded as displacement and diffusion of the tailing edge of the cloud of contaminates in the form of a semi-infinite gas body, for which a one-dimensional mass transfer equation is represented by: [at + u • ax = Ex ex2 + f (x,t)(1.1)] In Eq. (1.1), the term [~~] is the rate of growth of the concentration in the differential element, while a [(5xx )] is the net gain of material due to convective transfer. The two terms balance the total loss of material due to turbulent dispersion that is represented by [Ex . 21] and f(x,t), the source term for the pollutant in the roadway. Several cases of mass transfer that occur in mining can be identified and modelled using the conservative volume element method. The governing equation, along with the associated boundary and initial conditions, source terms and their solutions are detailed elsewhere (Bandopadhyay and Ramani, 1988, Devala, 1989). Only one mass transfer situation is presented (Figure 1) here for the present analysis. Mixed Evolution of Pollutant (multiple pulses) Typical examples of these situations are emission of pollutants from multiple diesel vehicles in the face area, and gas emission from standing pillars as well as from broken coal seam during coal cutting with a continuous miner. Ox completing the filtration of a solution of pig-iron in hydrochloric acid, and after apparently everything had been transferred to the paper, a minute residue was observed remaining in the angle of the beaker in which the solution had been made. This residue had a steel-gray color and metallic luster and was hard and gritty when touched with a glass rod. Placed under a microscope and magnified 400 diameters, the substance was found to be made up almost entirely of opaque cubical crystals with some fragments having the same color and luster as the cubes. The appearance was strikingly like that of a collection of crystals of iron pyrites. The amount of material obtained from ten to twenty grams of borings by solution in dilute hydrochloric acid, and careful decantation from graphite, was barely sufficient for a microscopic slide. A qualitative test of the minute amount of material obtained in this way, showed the presence of considerable titanium. After many fruitless trials by decantation and other methods, sufficient material for quantitative analysis was finally obtained in the following manner: Two hundred and fifty grams of the coarsest possible borings were dissolved in seven liters of hydrochloric acid of sp. gr. 1.03. A solution by the aid of heat took four to five hours. It was allowed to settle, and the clear solution poured off. Great care was taken that none of the material which had settled to the bottom was lost. The graphitic residue was then completely transferred upon fine bolting-cloth, previously Stretched and fastened over the top of a beaker. All graphitic lumps were broken up by the finger while

Probably the largest single tungsten deposit in the U. S. is one that has yet to produce any tungsten; it is not even listed in tables showing U. S. reserves. This deposit is at Searles Lake, Calif., where the brine contains about 70 ppm WO,. Small though the concentration is, the amount of brine in the lake is so great that it is estimated at 170 million lb of WO3 (8.5 million units), equaling the total of all other known reserves in the U. S. This dry lake is located in the basin formed by the Argus and Slate ranges in the northeastern corner of the Mojave Desert (Fig. 1). It consists of a massive salt body some 35 sq miles in extent, varying in thickness from 0 to 120 ft and containing more than 3 billion tons of salt. A central section of about 8 sq miles is exposed salt; the remaining area is overlain by mud. Except for the exposed sodium chloride (10 to 15 ft thick) the body consists of a very complex and heterogenous mixture of soluble crystals, containing at least eight major phases. It is only about 53 pct solid, the voids being occupied by a dense brine which is the raw material for two chemical companies operating in the valley. The deposit is believed to be made up of salts present in the runoff waters from the last two ice stages. Searles Lakes was the third in a chain of five lakes that received waters from the Owens Valley drainage of the Sierra Nevada Mts. After leaving Owens Lake the waters could flood in succession into the Indian Wells, Searles, Panamint, and Death valleys (Fig. 2). During the first two ice stages of the Pleistocene Epoch most of the waters eventually arrived at Death Valley; consequently the lower 3300 ft of Searles Valley contain only mud

Abstract - As the US coal industry moves into the next century, it is becoming more apparent that the effective application of new technology is the only way it can remain competitive in the energy marketplace. Examples of this emphasis are with us today in such diverse areas as face- ventilation and excavation-equipment applications. The focus of this new technology is directed toward improvements in health and safety, cost control, and productivity. Room-and-pillar mining accounts for approximately 68% of the nation's underground coal production; this percentage is not expected to decrease markedly in the near future. As such, this paper analyzes the impacts of the changing techno- logical climate on future room-and-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to three scenarios incorporating new or emerging technology. A microcomputer-based comparative analysis will reflect the changes in section production and costs.

Although the term "spalling" has long been known, Norton l first referred to its usage for the fracture or disintegration of materials subjected to rapid temperature changes. Spalling of ceramic materials at high temperatures has received attention in the past. Removal of the char formed during ablation in re-entry of space vehicles has been referred to as mechanical spalling. The first experiments to evaluate the process of rock fragmentation by thermal spalling were conducted by Stoces using a series of gasoline burners on the quartz veins of the Zinnwald deep mines in Germany. After the development of rocket-jet burners, the principles of 'thermal spalling combined with high fluid momentum found wide practical application in rocks. The well-known jet piercing process for drilling blastholes in taconite and for jet channeling in the quarrying of granite are among the more notable of these application^.

In modern warfare, mica is truly indispensable. Coordination of combatant units necessitates maintenance of intricate communications equipment, in the construction of which high-grade sheet mica is essential. "The objective of this expert system application in a copper-zinc concentrator, is to increase the availability of assay data through substitution for erroneous data. The assay data is used by the Operations personnel and automatic process control strategies to control flotation circuit performance. Two online X-ray fluorescence analysis systems analyze 24 streams across four divisions to provide the required data. Data availability of individual streams average 90% while the resulting circuit availabilities are 70%. The unavailability of correct data results from mechanical, X-ray or process problems. The erroneous data can be identified by process experts using knowledge relating stream interdependencies and historical process behaviour. An expert system was devised to provide real time identification of erroneous data and substitute for that data with the ultimate aim of improving metallurgical response by both the operator and automatic control systems.The paper discusses the early development work and architecture of the knowledge base designed using Neuron Data's expert shell NEXPERT.INTRODUCTIONThis paper describes the early development of an expert system (ES) prototype at the Kidd Creek concentrator. The project is a joint undertaking of the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limited and CANMET. Kidd Creek entered into the project to apply heuristic rules to the XRF assay data to improve the metallurgical control of the flotation process by increasing availability of analysis data. This project provided a problem of suitable size and future expandability while making use of a wide base of in-house expertise and experience. Another important benefit is the introduction of expert system technology to the site providing tools and experience for future system selection and technology application. CANMET has an on-going interest in assessing various aspects of ES technology (hardware, software, knowledge engineering, integration) while addressing problems in process operations that could most readily benefit from the technique. CANMET's role in the project was to provide project assistance, financial support, substitution algorithm assistance and software for data substitution. BRIDGMAN1,2 melted metals in a graphite or hard glass tube and lowered the tube through a furnace to make it cool from one end only. Because of the difficulty of eliminating all vibration of the mold, others have raised the furnace instead. Neither way seems as desirable as a setup with no motion of either the mold or the furnace. A furnace in which both the shape and the slope of the temperature gradient could be controlled and varied over a wide range and in which such a gradient could be moved from one end of the furnace to the other, freezing the specimen from one end to the other, at any desired rate, all by means of isolated external control, seemed to offer definite advantages. In addition to eliminating the possibility of vibration due to moving parts, it might also give better control over the direction and rate of heat flow. Such an apparatus was assembled and is shown schematically in fig. 1. Equipment Furnace: A clay-carborundum tube of 3 1/2 in. ID with a % in. wall thickness was used as the core. This had a main winding of No. 12 B.&S. gauge Nichrome V with some compensation for heat loss at the ends. Taps to this winding were made at points 12 in. from each end. Fig. 2 shows details of this winding and of the two end windings. Each end winding was wound over Micanite over the main winding. No. 15 B.&S. gauge Nichrome V was used for these, and again taps were supplied at two inter-mediat,e points on each. The tube was supported in an 18 in. OD black iron shell with brick insulation. The input to each of the windings was regulated by means of a variable transformer. Temperature Regulation: A chromel-alumel thermocouple located near the furnace wall in the center of the furnace was connected with a Celec-tray controller, type PIC, 300" to 900°C range, which opened and closed a shunt across an external variable resistance in the main winding circuit. An "anticipatory response" device also was incorporated to minimize the cyclic effect of the control mechanism. Eleven survey couples in a common pyrex glass protection tube were located near the furnace wall and spaced 2 in. apart. The couple leads went to a common reference junction box where they were connected to copper leads from a selector switch which, in turn, was connected to a type K potentio-meter. This arrangement permitted rapid temperature surveys. The knob on the controller dial was replaced with a threaded brass spool turned at a controlled rate by a thin iron wire one end of which was attached to a gear train and the other to a small weight heavy enough to prevent slipping of the wire on the spool.
