With mining development on hold and other underground works in a slowdown, the development of nuclear wa te repositories takes centre tage on the American rock engineering scene. Three repositorie for commercial spent fuel-in salt, tuff, and basalt-are in the phase of site characterisation and conceptual design, and one pilot project for defense high-level wa te in salt is under construction. A repository design for crystal line rock has recently been postponed.Because of strict quality assurance requirements throughout design and construction, and because of the need to predict and ascertain in advance the satisfactory performance of the underground openings, much intellectual energy has been expended to analyse underground openings in the unusual circumstances of the repository environment. In the long term, these efforts will lead to an improved understanding of rock behaviour and improved methods of underground analysis and design. For the shorter term, a formalised ground control plan was developed, the principles of which may be applied to other types of projects.This paper summarises the status of underground design and construction for nuclear waste repositories and presents some details of the ground control plan and its individual elements.

In this paper it is shown that when the tensile strength of a given steel in various states of heat-treatment is plotted against its elongation, a straight line results. The equation of this straight line can be computed with considerable accuracy from its chemical composition. The appropriate equations are given. The logarithm of the slope of the tensile-strength locus is shown to be proportional to the cumulative effect of the total alloy addition and the vosition of the line to be directly proportional to the cumulative effect of the alloy content. It is further pointed out that heat-treatment is more effective than composition in determining yield ratio. The latter enters mainly by its effect on hardenability, which is briefly discussed. Reduction of area and Brinell number are given some incidental attention. The data are applicable only to steels that have been normalized and/or quenched. The steels, if normalized, may or may not have been tempered. If quenched they must have been tempered at or above 4oo°C. (75o°F.). Introduction Cast steels vary in composition and frequently are used in various states of heat-treatment. It is obviously important to be able to predict the compositions that might accompany specific engineering properties by suitable selection of heat-treatments. For cast steels, which are of necessity produced heat by heat in accordance with the particular requirements of the castings to be poured, there has been, happily, much less tendency to standardization than for rolled products, whose destination is not necessarily known when particular ingots are made or rolled. It is of distinct advantage to the steel foundry-men to be able to make steel of given properties, using alloys that can be recovered from scrap, or most conveniently or cheaply bought, rather than a particular formula adopted in the interest of standardization. The heat-treatment appropriate to securing a given result in a given steel is well known to be closely related to composition. For example, molybdenum steels are not much softened by tempering except at rather high temperatures. Highly alloyed steels are "air-hardening," and on cooling in air behave like carbon steels that have been quenched. With these matters, we do not concern ourselves in this paper, although we recognize their importance. The entire picture evidently will be very complex and can be brought within accurate understanding only if our knowledge of test results can be coordinated in terms of general principles.

A MUD-conditioning program found to be very effective for drilling and completion operations on routine field wells requiring relatively short drilling time involves a moderate alkaline-tannate-bentonite treatment resulting in an ultimate filtration rate of 10.0 cc or less (API test). Mud weight schedules are planned from pressure information on completed wells in producing reservoirs and drill-stem test data obtained on other zones not being produced at present. In general, terminal mud viscosities average 45 sec (Marsh). This value has been found to be sufficient to remove cuttings from the well bore on the average well, with the slush pumps in general use on the rigs. On field wells requiring drilling times in excess of approximately 30 days, an alkaline-tannate-lime-bentonite treatment has been effective in maintaining desirable viscosities and filtration rates with a substantial reduction in chemical costs. This system has shown particular advantage on heavily weighted muds and those with abnormal flow-line temperatures. For the most part, the chemical treatment utilized in wildcat drilling follows closely the program used on field wells, depending on depth and duration of drilling operations. Wildcat mud programs are planned from information available from various geologic and operational sources, taking into consideration the possibility of encountering mud problems of a special nature in the wildcat area. Careful planning of wildcat mud pro- grams has proved to have definite value in avoiding most serious mud problems. An analysis and recommended treatment are presented on several special. mud problems which have been encountered in the area in the past. Those problems discussed are lost circulation, blowouts, sloughing shale, excessive chloride contamination, sulphate contamination, and prevention and correction of cement contamination. Introduction Drilling-mud control in the Southwest Texas area, in general, does not involve the multiplicity of problems encountered in other coastal areas. For instance, it is rare that a mixture of problems such as lost circulation, abnormal pressure, severe sloughing shale, and others, occurs on one well within close enough limits in vertical depth not to be taken care of by a sensible casing program, together with a relatively clear-cut mud program. There are conditions such as the fairly widespread occurrence of abnormal pressure in the lower Frio and Vicksburg zones, and the tendency for sloughing shale in the Jackson section which make for rather expensive mud control. However, the availability of fairly accurate geologic and operational information makes possible a reasonable degree of standardization on mud treatment over a relatively large area. It may be said that, over most of this area where drilling is currently in progress, the natural mud made is very poor in quality, but responds readily to moderate chemical treatment to yield very good wall-building characteristics. BHP BillitonÆs new rotary iron ore car dumper installation at Finucane Island (Port Hedland) was constructed to increase the total capacity of the port facility from 110 Mtpa to 120 Mtpa and to allow for incremental capacity increases in future. The arrangement of the dumper is similar to other car dumper installations existing on site. To construct the facility, approximately 120 000 m3 of material was excavated in six months, to a total depth of 22 m. The saline water table was nominally 6 m below ground level and the materials excavated varied depending on depth, ranging from sand to mangrove muds. There was a need to retain the sides of the excavation and limit the amount of water from entering the excavated area. This was required to allow excavation to progress and had to be maintained during construction of the permanent concrete and steel facility. The excavation was backfilled progressively as construction progressed. Various retaining wall methods were investigated with the preferred option being sheet piles secured by walers and ground anchors. Detailed electronic models were developed and assessed to complete the final design arrangement. Dewatering bores around the perimeter of the excavation removed the groundwater to intercepted sumps within the site. A strict and methodical program was developed to monitor the integrity of the temporary works and the quality of the groundwater. The works were completed on time despite the following challenges being encountered: availability of resources and equipment, movement of mobile plant on æboggyÆ materials, difficulty driving sheet piles into material at depth, drilling of ground anchors to 32 m, grouting of ground anchors, greater than expected groundwater flows, and the risk of hydrocarbons within the groundwater. The lessons learned from the use of the retention system and, in particular, the associated construction challenges overcome, provide a sound basis for similar work in this buoyant resource market. The conference paper describes the temporary works options investigated, design considerations and processes, construction methodology and challenges encountered, and the monitoring systems developed. Lessons learned are also discussed.

At the Cleveland meeting of the Institute, October, 1912, I had occasion to call attention to the general though erroneous impression that the principal mining activities of the United States lie west of the 100th meridian of longitude. Few, I believe, realize that the States east of the Mississippi river, which comprise only 28.8 per cent. of the total area of the United States, exclusive of Alaska, contribute about two-thirds of the total mineral production, computing by values. In 1910 the percentage of the production credited to the Eastern States was 67; in 1911 it was 65. When I have, with becoming modesty, ventured to speak of these comparisons, I have usually been met with the rejoinder, " But you include coal." I surely do, for whereas coal (m petroleum, as natural gas, as limestone) is not in the strictly technical definition of the word, a " mineral," it is legally mineral, is certainly a mineral substance, and contributes by far the largest tonnage and approximately one-third of the total value of all mineral products. The production of coal-mines in 1911 weighed approximately 500,000,000 tons. In 1912 it exceeded that record by nearly, if not quite, 50,000,000 tons. According to H. D. McCaskey, of the U. S. Geological Survey, the total weight of all the metallic ores mined in the United States in 1911 was 105,000,000 tons (a little more than one-fifth that of coal). In 1910 Mr. Lindgren estimated the total weight of all metallic ores at 120,000,000 tons. The products of the quarries, clay-pits, oil-wells, phosphate-mines, and other non-metallic products, taken all together, did not in 1911 weigh in excess of 300,000,000 tons, so that the output of coal exceeds by 25 per cent. the combined tonnage of all other mineral products. Since the inception of the Ashton (formerly Kalumburu) Joint Venture in 1972 the parties have expended $24 million in exploration for diamonds in the Kimberley region. This has resulted in the discovery of the currently subeconomic Ellendale deposits in 1976/77 and the economic Argyle - Smoke Creek Deposits in 1979/80. In addition to Argyle and Ellendale, some 90 kimberlitic and lamproitic bodies have been discovered grouped broadly into three provinces, on the west, east and north margins of the Kimberley block. These bodies range in size from dyke-like features less than 1. m (3 ft) in width to pipes with a surface area of 128 ha (316 acres). The bodies with larger surface area are volcanic crater deposits, infilled with air-fall and water deposited tuffs and epiclastic sediments. Diamond content ranges from trace to economic concentrations. The exploration discoveries were facilitated by early recognition that the petrography, mineralogy and chemistry of the diatremes varied from the classical kimberlites of Kimberley, South Africa, to unusual more highly fractionated, alkaline, silicic varieties having affinities with leucitelamproite. Indirect methods of exploration were used, primary reconnaissance work being stream gravel sampling for kimberlitic indicator minerals. Evaluation showed Ellendale diamonds are 90% gem and near gem, but the low grades and tonnage render the deposits unpayable at today's diamond prices. After discovery in late 1979 and completion of a feasibility study by the end of 1982, evaluation studies proved Argyle to be economic. Alluvial diamond mining commenced in 1983 producing 6.2 million carats (Mct) that year, 60% being of industrial quality. Open-pit mining of the AK1 lamproite should start in 1985/1986 at a rate of 3 million t/a (33 million stpy) and produce 25 Mct/a, making this mine, and Australia, the world's largest producer of diamonds by weight. The revenue from diamond deposits is a function of the grade and the value of the diamonds. The grade is the product of the frequency of occurrence of the diamonds (stone density) and the mean stone size; the value of the stones is strongly related to their size distribution. During evaluation of the West Australian deposits, the diamond distribution was found to vary markedly in stone density and stone size. These variations corresponded with changes in the rock type hosting the mineralization. As a consequence, geological mapping of individual lamproites within the multiple vents and careful monitoring of the diamond distribution became an important part of the evaluation work. Similar variations in stone size and frequency were found to accord with separate alluvial terraces and fan gravels derived by erosion from the Argyle AM lamproite.

A sampling and measurement program was undertaken on the reaction shaft of the Olympic Dam copper flash smelting furnace. The object of the work was to provide information to validate a mathematical model of the burner and reaction shaft. Samples and measurements were undertaken through the burner inspection ports and the South East (SE) shaft sampling port about half way down the reaction shaft. Samples were collected to enable the calculation of particle loading of shaft gases, or sizing and chemical analysis of the partly-combusted feed, and the preparation of polished sections. Measurements were made of the temperature and sulfur dioxide content of the atmosphere, as well as plume velocity.To implement the program it was necessary to design and construct the following specialised items of equipment. For use at the burner inspection ports: a cup sampler for obtaining samples below the burners (temperature, solids loading and samples for characterisation).For use at the SE shaft sampling port and also at the settler level: trough sampler (plume definition and samples), isokinetic sampler (used as a velocity probe in this work), temperature probe (temperature traverses across the shaft), and sulfur dioxide probe (SO2 measurements across the shaft).The design of the sampling and measuring equipment is described, and examples are cited of the types of information obtained. The problems arising from working in a hot environment with molten or sticky particles are discussed.

The chemical and mineralogical composition of Caribbean bauxite ores are described. Extraction of alumina by several processes from both Haiti and Jamaica bauxites is discussed and data presented. IMMENSE deposits of bauxite occur in the Caribbean islands of Hispaniola and Jamaica in the high plateau lands and have been excellently described by 0. C. Schmedeman.' The bauxite occurs as deposits in catchments or etched depressions in Tertiary limestone believed to have been deposited in the Eocene and Oligocene periods.' In appearance both the Haiti and Jamaica bauxites resemble a relatively high iron clay and have indeed been mistaken for such.' They are very soft and friable and disperse readily on vigorous agitation in water. The color range in general is light brown to red. Chemically, the outstanding characteristic of the bauxites is the low silica and high ferric oxide content. The extremely low silica makes them particularly valuable for the production of alumina in the Bayer plant since silica is responsible for the loss of both alumina and soda chemically combined as XNa,OYSiO2,ZAl2O2. The ferric oxide, only traces of ferrous iron are present, offers no interference in the production of high grade alumina. Typical oxide analyses of three types of ore are given in Table I2 and a list of the elements occurring in spectrographic quantities in Table 11." The size of the individual particles in the ore makes successful petrographic examination extremely difficult. The ores contain some relatively coarse grains of heavy minerals such as ilmenite, magnetite, and rutile, but other than occasional crystals of a few microns, the greater portion of the minerals are submicroscopic in size and approach colloidal dimensions. The mineralogic composition of the ores has been investigated by X-ray and differential thermal analysis.' These investigations indicate that the predominant mineral phases present are gibbsite (A1203.3H2O), boehmite (Al2O3.H2O), hematite (Fe2O3), and goethite (Fe2O3-H2O). There is no evidence of the occurrence of diaspore (Al2O3.H2O) in either the Haiti or Jamaica ores, but some type of "amorphous" alumina may be present in some of the bauxites of Jamaica." The temperature stability regions in the alumina-water system have been investigated and are given in recent literature. In the temperature range where the hydrated forms are stable, as determined by hydrothermal bomb methods," ibbsite is the stable phase to 155°C (311°F), boehmite from 155°C (311°F) to 280°C (536oF), and diaspore from 280°C (536°F) to 450°C (842°F). Although quite similar in many characteristics, the Haiti and Jamaica ore show a divergence in mineralogic composition that is reflected in the extractability of the alumina described in later paragraphs. Two principal differences occur in mineralogic composition. The iron-bearing mineral in the Haiti ores is predominantly hematite, while in the Jamaica ores goethite is predominant.4 Directly related to the extraction of alumina are the two minerals, gibbsite and boehmite. Boehmite is relatively high in the Haiti ores and in some of the less soluble Jamaica ores, while gibbsite predominates in the ores in Jamaica amenable to the American Bayer process of extraction. Pedersen and Related Processes In general, all processes for the extraction of alumina involving sintering or fusion of bauxite ores with limestone, soda ash, or a combination of limestone and soda ash followed by leaching, are based on the formation of alumina compounds that. yield alumina soluble in the subsequent leach. The principal idealized reactions in respect to alumina and silica for the three types of processes are as follows: Soda Ash Sinter: A12O3 + Na2CO3 = Na2O-Al2O, + CO2 SiO2 + Na2CO3 = Na2O . SiO2 + CO2 A12O2 + SiO2 + Na2CO3 = Na2O.Al2O8. SiO2 + CO2 Leach (with excess water): H2O + Na2O-A12O3 = 2 NaOH + A12O3 (insolution) H2O + Na2O-SiO2 = 2 NaOH + SiO2 (in solution) Soda Ash— Limestone Sinter: Na2CO2 + A12O3 = Na2O.A1203 + CO2 2CaCO3 + SiO2 = 2CaO . The diffusion rates of Ag110 in cylindrical single crystals of 99.99 pct pure silver, which were twisted to a total surface strain of 0.91 during the diffusion anneal at temperatures of 700°, 750°, and 800°C, were measured by sectioning and counting as a function of the strain rates. The ratio of the diffusivities while strain ing occurred (Ds) to those of the unstrained specimens varies linearly with the rate of twisting and attains values of near 100 for some of the rates used. The enhancement of diffusion by straining is inversely proportional to the temperature at which diffusion occurs. The activation energy for diffusion determined from the data plotted as a function of the rate of twisting decreases from 44,090 cal per mole for zero strain, to an asymptotic value of 21,000 cal per mole for the strain rates of 22 x it)"5 see-l. Qualitative explanation for the observations based on the generation of nonequilibrium number of defects by plastic deformation will be discussed. The initial research of Buffington and cohen1 on self-diffusion in a iron under compressive stresses contributed the first quantitative information concerning the effect of applied stresses on diffusion. These results were obtained from radioactive Fe55 plated on one of the horizontal surfaces and compressing the large-grained specimens while the diffusion-anneal was occurring. Enhancement of diffusion of a maximum of seventeen times was observed provided the strain was in the tertiary stage of creep and the rates of straining were at least as fast as rates used in the normal creep test. On the other hand, Darby, Tomizuka, and Balluffi,2 extending silver single crystals up to 30 pct elongation at rates of straining about equal to those used by Buffington and Cohen observed no effect. For the past two and a half years at the University of Pennsylvania, we have been investigating the effect or torsional strains on self-diffusion in silver single crystals. If enhancement is observed as has been reported1 a possible explanation may be based upon the generation of fairly large numbers of point defects and their role in the diffusion process. Hence, since torsion should produce an abundance3 of point defects, an increase in the diffusivity while the crystal is being twisted should easily be measured. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Our research uses single crystals of silver prepared from 99.99 Ag by the Bridgman method in a dynamic vacuum of less than 25 µ. As grown, they are about 25 cm long by 1.3 cm in diam. The crystals are cut into 7.5 cm lengths with a jeweler's saw and machined to the shape shown in Fig. 1. The test length of the crystal is machined to a 0.6 cm diam after which the ends are masked and the test section etched heavily in HNO3, and KCN:(NH4),S2Os , solution to remove the effects of machining. The specimen is then annealed in vacuum for 8 to 12 hr at 800°C to remove any residual stresses and also to recrystallize the end sections. The recrystallized ends are necessary since experiments showed that single-crystalline end sections are too soft to transmit the desired torque. Occasionally, recrystalliza-

If an electric field is applied to a conducting liquid solution, changes in concentration usually occur because of differences in ionic mobilities. A variety of ways of utilizing this effect in conjunction with the freezing process are discussed in principle. For example, if a column of binary eutectic liquid is maintained a few degrees above the melting point and a field is applied, the component solid solutions will crystallize at opposite ends of the column until the liquid is consumed. An expression for the effective distribution coefficient, k, is derived for the case of a direct current Passing through a solid-liquid interface. It is shown that k can be varied It is well known that solute distributions in crystalline substances can be controlled by careful freezing from melt or solution. It is also well known that an electric field can produce substantial changes of concentration in liquid solutions by virtue of differences over a wide range, including values outside the usual range between ko (the equilibrium value) and unity. Hence, for many systems: the efficiency of zone refining can be increased; a ko of unity can be made greater or less than unity; solutes that lower or raise the fretzing point can be concentrated at the same end of the ingot by zone refining; be made equal to unity; and the tendency toward constitutional supercooling can be reduced. The methods of field-freezing are applicable to a wide range of materials including metals, semiconductors, and ionic conductors. in ionic mobility. In this paper we discuss, in principle, some methods that combine these techniques in useful way's. The methods are designated by the general term, field-freezing. Topics discussed include separation of the components of a eutectic, crystal growth, and controlling the value of the effective distribution coefficient. The methods are applicable to a broad range of materials, including alloys, semiconductors, fused salts, and other liquid electrolytes.

The technique of handling drilling muds varies somewhat, partly because of personal factors but mainly because of differences in formation, the type of problems, and the general drilling conditions in different localities. The much greater depths to which bore holes are now carried have made necessary closer attention to and great modifications of all aspects of drilling-mud technique. Increased depth means smaller hole, smaller drill pipe, smaller clearances, higher pumping pressures, higher differential pressures between shows and the mud column, less accurate control of the weight of the mud column, delayed receipt of formation data, and poorer samples. It means longer delays and greater hazards in rectifying mistakes or dealing with accidental occurrences. Equipment on a larger scale is necessary and more pains must be taken with layout. Lastly, the budget costs of raw materials have risen to high figures and economy of time and of direct monetary expenditure have come to mean much more than formerly. A mud laboratory is now part of the essential establishment of a modern oil field and to it current problems can be submitted for the most thorough investigation. The detailed chemical properties of all materials purchased or quarried have to be investigated. Detailed data on the physical properties have to be ascertained and research on improvement of material and its most efficient use has to be carried out. In this paper will be discussed the main mud problems of Iran, some of which are peculiar to local conditions while others are of the general type common to all workers in this subject. Underground Conditions In deep wells in Iran the normal overburden may consist of: (1) up to several thousand feet of marls with interbedded sandstones and limestones of varying porosity and permeability; (2) beneath this a chemical series of rock salt and anhydrites, containing various marls and thin limestones,

the hammering effect acts only to a point 3 in. back from the cutting edge, and the hardening heat extends back only 1 in. from the cutting edge. Then, as a steel is taken from the fire, the grain condition is as shown in Fig. I. After the forging operation has been performed the condition shown by Fig. 2 exists. The heating operation to harden the cutting edge produces the effect shown in Fig. 3. The questions that naturally arise are: Will the cost of the extra heat treatment necessary to change this condition (annealing) be more than the saving that may be effected in the drill steel or will the extra heating be an economical as well as a wise thing to do? Is this condition necessarily detrimental to the maximum service of the drill steel? Can this annealing action be obtained in the hardening heat by heating more of the bit, say at least 5 in., to the hardening temperature but quenching only the end of the bit by a shallow immersion? Short Rock-drill Steels Reclaimed by Welding By W. T. Ober, Lynn, Mass. The drills used in the experiments were hollow drills l1/4-in. in diametcr containing 0.95 per cent. to 1.05 per cent. carbon. The ends to be joined must first be ground off fairly square and the greater part of the rust, scale, etc. removed for 3 or 4 in. back in order to insure good electrical contact with the dies of the welder and countersunk, with an 80° countersink, approximately 1/4 in. The steels are then clamped in the copper dies of the welder, so that a length projects from the inside edge of each pair of dies equivalent to from one-half to three-quarters the diameter of the drill. The drills should also be brought into accurate alignment. During the period from 1910 to 1920, there was a lively interest in the subject of grain growth and many papers were published, followed by interesting discussions. Questions dealing with the fundamentals of grain growth—why and how it occurs—were treated in papers by Howe,' .Jeffries,² Sauveur,² Chappell,4 Beilby,5 Mathewson and Phillips,6 Mc Adam,7 Carpenter and Elam,8 Stead and Carpenter,9 Ruder,l0 as well as others. Since that decade, much indeed has been done regarding the practical control of grain size, and it is now possible to order material having a size sperified in the American Society for Testing Materials classification. Also, one hears the term "spliced boundaries" used in connection with certain tungsten lamp filamentsl1 wherein it is important to prevent "sagging" between consecutive turns of the helix.12 This practical use of a certain knowledge as to the things that influence or even control grain growth should not be taken as an indication that the subject has been thoroughly explored and that nothing more can be learned from fundamental studies. It is with this thought in mind that a report of some observations and experiments on abnormal grain growth is believed justified. Abnormal grain growth is met with in heat-treating high-carbon steels in the austenitic range,'? in the hardening treatments of high-speed steels,14'15 and in the low-temperature annealing of strained low-carbon steels as in sheet and wire material. Entirely aside from these instances of exaggerated grain growth, which some might consider as freakish, it is thought that abnormal growth is simply a case where the growth forces and the forces tending to prevent growth are almost, but not quite, evenly balanced. Information relative to grain-growth characteristics in general may be obtained from a study of abnormal growth conditions, which may be looked upon as vantage points. Florida is blessed with some of the worlds greatest phosphate rock deposits, and doubly blessed in that those deposits are uraniferous. Until recently, the uranium con¬tained in phosphate rock had been ignored, but spot mar¬ket prices in the $40-per-pound range have spurred actions which will soon transform the state into a major uranium supplier. In 1978, two plants in Florida and one in Louisiana went it on- stream to recover uranium oxide from phosphoric acid, and construction began on three other extraction facilities. Together, these six plants will be cap¬able of recovering 1940 t/y (2140 stpy) of yellow cake from Florida phosphate in the early 1980s, equivalent to 15% of the projected US requirement. By the year 2000, Florida phosphates will have produced a projected 49 000 tons (54,000 st) of uranium oxide to fuel the nation's nuclear reactors.

As desirable as it may be to a geologist to have maximum detail in any geological report, the task of doing so for an area as vast as British Columbia within six average size magazine pages is clearly impossible. As a result, it has been necessary to draw a fairly broad picture of the geology on the following pages, but it is one which should be adequate to give the reader a concept of what rock is where in the Province. In preparing this horseback ride over the strata of the Province, much reliance has been placed on various reports appearing in trade and Canadian Government journals. Of these, one in particular stands out. Entitled "The Cordilleran Region", this report has been authored in three parts by H. S. Bostock, R. Mulligan and R. J. W. Douglas, respectively, and is included as a major chapter of the book Geology and Economic Minerals of Canada. Published in 1957 by the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, the book has provided the extensive quotes, taken from each of the three authors, which appear on the following pages.

Prior to 1934, published information covering expenditures by oil companies for properties, plant, and equipment and the residual investments in the various segments of the petroleum industry was not readily available. This paper presents an analysis of the funds invested by a selected group of oil companies during the years 1934 through 1942, based on an extensive study of the individual records of 30 oil companies. The sources, disposition, and characteristics of the capital employed by this group of companies are traced through a series of combined statements and appropriate charts, covering financial and operating data. The analysis of these statements not only constitutes a record useful for comparative purposes but also serves as a basis for a number of broad conclusions, as follows: 1. The petroleum industry generates the capital needed for its expansion almost entirely from its own operations and is therefore a singularly self-contained economic unit. 2. The long-term debt contained in the financial structure of the industry is small relative to the total capital employed, is less than the net working capital, and has increased but slightly during the period under review. 3. The capital expenditures of the group of 30 oil companies for 9 years amounted to 6.1 billion dollars, 58.3 per cent of which went into crude-oil producing facilities. The trend of this segment of expenditures has been downward since 1937. In 1942, expenditures for refining facilities increased sharply and for marketing facilities declined drastically. 4. The net working capital of the group increased 380 million dollars over the period, and the industry is in a favorable position of liquidity. The ratio of combined current assets to current liabilities was 3.21 at the close of the period. 5. The net income of the group displayed an upward trend for the period but with rather sharp cyclical fluctuations. 6. In 1942, Government funds entered the industry for the first time in substantial amounts and were utilized for the provision of war facilities needed for emergency use. 7. The group has paid out a relatively low percentage of net income in the form of dividends. For the period the average was 55 per cent of net income. 8. Roughly, a crack in a casting may be considered, for the moment, to be due to fracture of the alloy resulting from the stress set up by the contraction in volume on passing from the liquid to the solid state. Cracks may be external or surface, internal or deep-seated, or incipient or so-called strain cracks. Draws may appear as depressions, unevenness, and "pinching in" of the surface of a casting. Roughly, draws are due to contraction in volume and are governed largely by the same factors as cracks. A casting may be cracked, however, without being drawn. Shrinkage is a foundry term and refers to the contractio~l in volume of a metal or alloy on passing from the liquid to the solid state. Patternmaker's shrinkage is the total contraction in volume (including liquid, solidification, and solid shrinkage) that occurs when an alloy is poured into a mold. The contraction in volume of aluminum is one of the principal factors affecting the occurrence of cracks, as will be shown later, and the question of shrinkage and its control requires careful study in any treatment of cracking in castings. In the case of sand and die castings, cracks have been attributed to a number of causes, but in the case of most light aluminum alloys, they are due to the large contraction in volume on freezing and the lack of its regulation or control. The most important factors are: (1) Contraction in volume; (2) composition of alloy; (3) quality of melting charge; (4) design of casting; (5) method of molding; (6) hardness of ramming; (7) method of gating; (8) hardness and characteristics of cores; (9) chills; (10) risers; (11) melting temperatures; (12) furnace used for melting; (13) pouring temperatures; (14) inclusions in alloys; (15) hot shortness of alloys; and (16) physical properties of alloys at high temperatures. Of these, the first, second, third, and eleventh to sixteenth involve ascertainable metallurgical facts; the remainder are largely matters of opinion, judgment, and technical knowledge of men experienced in the production of castings.
