In the late 70’s and early 80’s in conjunction with other oil and gas well stimulation studies, personnel from the Dynamic Effects Lab performed model testing to demonstrate the effectiveness of utilizing an open section of borehole just before a plug. We called the process stem induced fracturing. The open section beneath the stem was used to increase the pressure magnitude and spread out the duration of the pressure pulse. This technique was later utilized to by Frank Chiapetta (1) in the fracture and fragmentation of rock in quarry blasting situations. He called his technique air deck blasting. In fact, Frank found that the Russians had previously discovered the same technique. There is currently interest in utilizing air deck blasting with an open section of hole beneath the explosive at the bottom of the bore hole to better remove the toe in a fragmentation shot. This paper reviews the development of stem induced fracturing and then describes a series of model tests conducted to measure borehole pressure at points along a borehole when an explosive charge is detonated at the midpoint of the borehole. Tests were conducted in both stiff boreholes (aluminum) and less rigid boreholes (PMMA-Plexiglas). Pressure time profiles were measured at the charge site, midway between the charge and the bottom of the hole, at the stemming at the top of the borehole, and at the bottom of the borehole. Crack initiation sites and crack propagation were also determined in the PMMA models. Some high speed pictures were taken of the event in the PMMA.

We have developed a new shotcreting which is suitable for the primary support of TBM tun- nelling in soft rock. This spraying compound is made from cement, a special accelerating agent and glass fiber. It can be sprayed on to a rock surface using a specially designed gun similar to paint-spraying equipment. Some of the characteristics of this method are as follows: 1) If spraying is done keeping the distance between the gun and the rock surface be- tween 0.2 and 3.0 m, the rebound losses are small and there is little dust. 2) This method can be used on excavated rock surfaces under inflowing water conditions of up to 10 i/m2òmin. 3) After 1 day the compressive strengthes of the sprayed material is greater than 250 kgf/cm2.

"This article first describes the impact of respirable dust on the health of miners in underground coal mines in the United States of America. Second, it identifies the major sources of dust generation, namely cutting tools in the road headings. Two surveys associated with cutting tools were made to determine the useful life of these cutting tools, and to determine the effect of cutting tool wear on productivity of the continuous miners. Third, this article presents the results of a series of experiments carried out in the Rock Mechanics Laboratories at West Virginia University in order to study: 3.1 the effect of cutting tool rate of wear on respirable dust generation, 3.1.1 the effects of rock materials on tool wear and respirable dust generation, 3.1.2 the effect of cutting tool geometric parameters on respirable dust generation, and 3.1.3 the effect of tip materials used in the cutting tool on respirable dust generation. Recommendations in regard to cutting tool design are also presented in this paper.Silica and coal dust are the two major elements affecting the health of underground miners. According to Lemen [1] approximately 1,500 men died due to breathing in silica dust in 1936 while tunneling through a mountain of mostly silica, near the town of Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. Coal dust resulting in lung diseases in one of the major health hazards in underground coal mines. The impact of black lung on miners, coal workers' pneumoconioisis (CWP), has ranged from 16,000 to 23,000 each year since 1982 [1].The trend for conventional mining to continuous machine cutting of coal, using more productive machinery, is inexorable. Intolerable level of dust generated at the face is an indication of inefficient coal/rock cutting by these machines. The federal goverment of the United States paid about 11.7 billion dollars in workmen's compensation to more than 470,000 miners with CWP [2]. Bieniawski and Zipf [3] reported that annual benefit payments were about 2 billion dollars. The enactment of the Health and Safety Act in 1969 in the United States triggered the initial investigation into coal cutting mechanisms and cutting tool designs.The surveys concerning the utilization of cutting bits and performance of continuous miners in underground coal mines were made in order to have first hand information about bit consumption and coal produ¬ction.Three types of used bits, commonly utilized cutting tools on continuous miners, were collected from different coal mines. The used bits were grouped into symmetrically and asymmetrically worn bits. Distribution analysis for weight loss and conical height loss was done. Details of the results are presented elsewhere [4], here the results are summarized briefly. The analysis shows that approximately 50% of the collected bits have worn asymmetrically, which shows that many bits do not rotate properly during cutting. Analysis of the distribution of bit wear showed that the degree of bit wear varied from one type to another and with mining conditions. On average, the weight loss of the used bits was 4% to 7% with a maximum of 31%. Correspondingly, the loss of the conical height was observed to vary between 11% and 23% with a maximum of 71%. Highwall mining is a specialised and largely automated mining method developed in the United States for the extraction of coal left under a shallow overburden cover after cessation of economical open cut mining operations. As the name indicates, coal is extracted from the seam exposed along a highwall by a remotely controlled continuous miner operating in a single unsupported opening and brought to the surface by a string of conveyor segments. The single entries are separated by coal .pillars and driven normal to the highwall, over areas where the thickness of cover and volume of recoverable coal is insufficient to allow or justify conventional underground mining. An additional highwall mining method is augering. The success of high wall mining operations depends significantly on geological features, notably the stability of the working roof, determined by the type and mechanical properties of the immediate roof strata. Stability of the ribs, absence of floor heave, faults and dykes are further important prerequisites for profitable highwall mining. The geometric relationship between the spatial attitudes of existing joint systems, the direction (azimuth) of the single entry opening and its vertical profile determine the unimpeded depth of penetration into the coal and thus its economic success. The mechanical implications of the lithological transition zone from a coal seam to either primary or original roof strata, compared to an interface between the coal seam and overlying strata, characterised by a sharp erosional boundary between coal and a secondary immediate roof stratum, are very significant. The compatibility between the response to mining by the geological system (floor-seam-roof) and the capability of the mining equipment to prevent the development of instability are essential requirements from a mechanical viewpoint. The minimisation of vibrations, very good horizon control, an ability to vary the profile of the opening, and the maintenance of consistently high advance and retreat rates, are also important aspects of profitable highwall mining.

"Newly prepared bipolar membrane is promising to become a key material of an electrolyser for a production process of strong reducing solvent. This research is basic research for using bipolar membranes as electrolysers of reducing agents, Cr(II), TI(III) and V (II) on the laboratory scale. In this report, a bipolar membrane was tried with an electrolyser, reducing chromic chloride to chromous chloride. An analysis of mass balance demonstrates advantages of it over the former electrolyser equipped with an anion and/or. cation exchange membrane. The effects of current density and concentration of Cr(lll) on the reduction rate of Cr(II) and the current efficiency were examined No deterioration of the bipolar membrane resulted from the electrolytic reduction of Cr(III). IntroductionRecently, bipolar membrane that was the development subject for a long time in the industry of ion exchange membranes has met the stage of the practical application at last [l]. The expectation of the application to the hydrometallurgy field increases. We took up the manufacturing of the strong reducibility solvent as part of the application of bipolar membrane to hydrometallurgy technology. This laboratory has much experience in the electrolytic reduction of Cr (II) aqueous .solution such as chromous sulfateusing bipolar membrane were compared in theory to chromous chloride aqueous solution manufacturing of the strong reducibility solvent. The advantage of applying bipolar membrane by substituting ion exchange membrane is described, and the experimental result is reported."

The following paper summarizes our observations on building response to mine subsidence and techniques for mitigation of building damage. The subsidence cases are located in Illinois. The general description of the geologic and mine conditions are primarily for those sites. Data on building response and mitigation measures were collected under grants supported by the Abandoned Mined Lands Reclamation Council (AMLRC) of Illinois and the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in Twin Cities, Minnesota. Case histories include pit and sag subsidence primarily beneath abandoned room and pillar mines. The majority of the paper deals with structures affected by sag subsidence. Most of the structures are one and two story homes. The first section of the paper summarizes the typical geologic and mining conditions at the sites. Building response to pit and sag subsidence follows the first section. Emphasis is placed on the behavior of concrete and masonry foundations, and wood frame and masonry superstructures. The third section describes mitigation techniques used to prevent or minimize building damage. A summary of the observations and critical parameters is given at the end of the paper.

Ore deposits of commercial grade are local concentrations of great rarity when considered in relation to the area of unmineral¬ized land surfaces, and they must therefore be considered as the products of exceptional and complex conditions. The data collected from a great number of individual deposits are sufficient to permit certain broad generalizations in regard to the conditions favorable to ore deposition which even numerous exceptions do not invalidate. The broadest general relation of ore deposits is with intrusive rocks, and while there are notable exceptions, the great majority of ore deposits have a visible or closely inferred connection with intrusive rock masses. Conditions that permit the dissipation of the ore-bearing vehicles do not permit the concentration of metals in deposits; the prime factor to consider in this connection is that structural conditions must be such as tend to concentrate and not to dissi¬pate the ore-bearing solutions. The disadvantage of extrusive rocks is at once apparent; any metals the magma may have contained are dissipated at the surface and are lost; with the exception of tiny vugs and cracks in quickly cooled flows, no concentrations of metals are known in extrusive rocks, and the lack of confinement and quick cooling apparently do not permit extrusives to exert mineralizing effect upon the rocks with which they come in contact. The close mineralogical similarity between extrusives and intrusives, and the great difference in mineralizing power is a proof of the ease with which magmas part with their metallic content, and of the mobility of the ore-bearing vehicles in comparison with the parent magma.

"One single property that influences the quality and market value of coal to the maximum extent is the ash content. The lower the coal ash higher is the energy utilization and potential for different applications. Even though Indian coal washeries aspire to produce coal with low ash, the intimate distribution pattern of ash bearing minerals in the coal matrix becomes the real bottleneck, as it brings down the clean coal yield to the impractical value. Because of this fact, most of the Indian washeries are operated to produce coal with 14-15% ash content at the yield of around 40%. In this context, with an objective to produce low ash coal at higher yield, a novel chemical beneficiation route has been explored to demineralize the high ash containing Indian coals. In this present work, the production of low ash clean coal from high ash Indian coals using chemical leaching process has been studied at pilot plant level. The leaching process parameters such as reaction temperature, reagent concentration, reaction time, coal-liquid ratio and agitator speed have been optimized for the flotation tailings sample from a captive washery of Tata Steel. The results obtained show that 67% demineralization could be achieved in a single stage of leaching process with a product yield of more than 65%. For further demineralization, multistage leaching was carried out and the results showed that 75-85% demineralization could be achieved with significant reduction in alumina to silica ratio. Additionally, the phosphorus content is also significantly reduced from 0.20 % to 0.022 %. Further, it is interesting to note that there is no increment of sodium content in the product coal after chemical treatment."

The factors which control chimney subsidence sinkhole development in weak rock were assessed by analyzing the characteristics of approximately 3000 chimney subsidence features along the Colorado Front Range. The area of study included features developed over abandoned mines in the Colorado Springs Coal Field, the Boulder Coal Field, and the Foothills District. The approximate locations of the areas studied are shown in Figure 1. Data were collected for sinkholes occurring over both room and pillar, and retreat mining areas in coal seams with a wide range of dips. The location, size, and approximate time of development of each sinkhole were documented. From these data, relationships were developed which describe the time rate of observable sinkhole development and the relative location of sinkhole development with respect to mined height, overburden thickness, and type of mining for relatively flat-lying coal seams. In addition, the observed locations of sinkhole development over steeply dipping coal seams were assessed for portions of the study area.

Deep Sea Minerals Inc. (DSM) is a high technology marine minerals and biotechnology corporation. The corporation is currently engaged in a worldwide leasing program to acquire exclusive rights in specific Economic Exclusive Zones (EEZ?s) that DSM?s marine geologists have identified as prospective targets for seabed mines of copper, zinc, gold, and silver. In the last two years the corporation has assembled an international team, including some of the world?s leading marine research scientists and engineers, and has created strategic partnerships and alliances with world-class engineering and mining groups. Development of a marine mining venture has key requirements in common with most other mining ventures. These include financing, deposit location, property acquisition, deposit delineation, and permitting, as well as the collection, transportation, processing and marketing of the ore itself. DSM has made progress on all of these fronts, which is outlined in a general way in this presentation. Financing for the venture is clearly the first big hurdle to overcome. Deep seabed mining involves new technologies and significant up-front capital investment. Less than fifteen years ago, such financing would probably have impossible to achieve, given classical business models. However, with the spectacular success of high technology ventures in the areas of electronics, software, and biotechnology, new business models and investment strategies have evolved which put relatively high evaluations on intellectual property and exhibit relatively high confidence in new ways of doing things. DSM is taking full advantage of these changes in venture capital markets in its financial planning.

An explosion in an underground coal mine can have a devastating effect on the main fans used to provide mechanical ventilation. The Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, Part 75.310 (CFR, 1992), specifies that each main mine fan shall be offset by at least 15 feet (4.6 m) from the nearest side of the mine opening unless an alternative method of protecting the fan is approved in the ventilation plan. Also, each main mine fan shall be protected by one or more weak walls or explosion doors. This paper presents venting and fan configuration designs which provide a comparable degree of safety for explosion protection. Design flexibility is enhanced and a means for consistency in safety judgements is afforded.

The stresses in the materials surrounding an underground opening are dependent upon the virgin stress field, the geometry of the opening and changes in boundary conditions as mining progresses. For most underground openings especially in coal mines, roof bolts are installed to help stabilize the opening. While most parameters in roof bolt design and installation have been thoroughly investigated, the effects of the initial stress field on the effectiveness of roof bolts have not been recognized. This paper summarizes the results of investigation of the effect of the initial stress field on the performance of mine roof bolts. Roof bolt installations are duplicated in the laboratory utilizing conventional roof bolt frame, commercial roof bolts and shells, mine torque wrench and encapsulated rock specimens for anchorage. A special and primary feature of the laboratory set-up is the addition of a loading system for generating stresses at the anchorage specimens. For this preliminary study, different levels of hydrostatic stress fields were induced at the anchorage specimen, instrumented roof bolts were installed in the usual manner, and the bolt load loss-with-time observed. Statistical analysis of data showed that the stress field at the anchorage horizon has a considerable influence on the performance of mine roof bolts, i.e. the higher the stress field, the higher the anchorage efficiency. From this observation, methods of improving the performance of mine roof bolts utilizing new shell designs and methods of installing them are suggested.

The Pyrometallurgical refining stage of ferronickel manufacturing produces a slag rich in iron and nickel, which is usually further processed for metal recovery. The recovered material is returned to the refining or smelting stages, depending on the amount of impurities. A series of tests was carried out on the Mineração Morro Azul refining slags, aiming at the recovery of the metallic particles through physical processing. Minor changes in the process showed improved results. This paper compares the textures of these slags after being cooled at ambient temperature and granulated under water at high pressure and flow. It concludes that the cooling process is intimately connected to the work index of such slags, thus resulting in direct impact in operating costs.

Salt production in Louisiana and Texas at the present time is entirely from salt domes of the interior and coastal groups. Before and during the Civil War salt was recovered from numerous salines and salt springs by evaporation in open kettles. The location of these in nearly every instance was near what is now known to be a salt dome, and the source of the salt in the salines and spring waters was that in the salt core. The tops of many of the shallower domes have been subjected to erosion1. The discovery that the salt occurred as large masses of rock salt in the form of domes was made in May, 1802, at Avery Island, La., by John Marsh Avery, grandson of the original owner, John C. Marsh, who built the old salt works in 18122. The first shaft for mining was sunk on the Avery dome in 1867 by Chouteau and Price. It was 90 ft. deep, about 58 ft. being in solid salt. It was abandoned in 1870. There are three general groups or fields of salt domes; interior Louisiana in northern Louisiana, interior Texas in northeastern Texas, and the coastal domes nearer the Gulf Coast and extending from the Mississippi River to the Rio Grande. This last group contains by far the greatest number of domes. As many of the coastal domes especially are prolific producers of petroleum and a few of sulfur, their geology has been intensively studied and fully covered in the literature. The depth to the top of the salt varies from near the surface, where shallow ground waters have dissolved the salt to just below recent deposits, to several thousand feet, where the depth has been cstimated only by geophysical methods. The diameter of the salt core varies from less than 1/2 mile to over 2 miles. Only domes where the salt is comparatively near the surface have been developed for commercial salt. Three deeper domes, which will be described later, have recently been developed or are in process of development, as a source of brine for chemical use. An experimental method to determine the carbon activity in various solid solutions was developed. Samples of the solid solutions and an Fe-C reference sample were equilibrated with respect to carbon content by annealing them in a Hz-CHI gas mixture in a closed cell. The carbon content of each sample was determined, and the carbon activity was obtained from the carbon content of' the reference sample and well-established data for the dependence of the carbon activity on the carbon content in Fe-C alloys. The influence of vanadium on the activity of carbon in austenitic Fe-C-V alloys at 1000°C was determined by this technique. A general semiempirical correlation was developed to describe the dependence of the activity coefficient of- carbon on the composition of ternary austenitic iron-base alloys containing interstitial carbon and a substitutional solute. The correlation is particularly useful in predicting the partitioning of- carbon between various alloys. THE influence of substitutional solutes on the activity of interstitial solutes in metallic solid solutions is important in the theory of alloy phases. Solid solutions of particular interest are the fcc austenite phases of ternary Fe-C-Z systems, in which carbon is the interstitial solute and Z represents any substitutional solute. Carbon-activity data are also needed in these solid solutions to solve practical problems; the quantitative treatment of diffusion-controlled transformations' is an examvle. Experimental information is available for ternary austenitic solid solutions containing Mn,2 Si,2 and A16 as the substitutional solute. Because qualitative preliminary studies indicated that vanadium appreciably decreases the carbon activity,14 the present investigation was undertaken to determine the influence of vanadium on the activity of carbon in austenite. Although Flender and ever" measured carbon activity over a range of compositions in the Fe-C-V system, they were primarily interested in determining phase boundaries in the ternary system, so most of their measurements were outside the composition range for stability of single-phase austenite. Petrova and Shvartsman' also made limited measurements of the carbon activity in Fe-C-V alloys. The dependence of the carbon activity on the carbon content of an alloy may be determined by passing COCOz or H2-CH4 gas mixtures of carefully measured composition over the alloys, determining their equilibrium carbon content, and utilizing the relevant equilibrium relationships. smith16 used this technique with both CO-COZ and HZ-CH4 gas mixtures to determine the dependence of carbon activity on carbon content in pure Fe-C alloys. His data, which are in good agreement with those of some previous and subsequent investigators,6'17 but not with those of others,lfl'ao are usually considered to be the most reliable. Although the same method can be applied to Fe-C-Z alloys, it is difficult experimentally, because the appropriate gas mixtures are almost pure CO or Hz. A simpler technique is to simultaneously equilibrate the Fe-C-Z alloys and pure Fe-C alloys with the gas mixtures, and then use Smith's data to determine the carbon activity in the pure Fe-C alloy. A number of investigators have employed this technique. others Have used the partitioning of carbon at the interface of a diffusion couple prepared from an Fe-C alloy and a Fe-C-Z alloy. In the present study, a closed-cell method was developed by which carbon was selectively transferred via a gas medium between pure Fe-C alloys and Fe-C-V alloys which were not in physical contact. A similar method was developed independently by Heckler and winchel14 and used to study the Fe-C-Ni system. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD A schematic diagram of the experimental arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. In a typical experiment, a 5-g Fe-C sample was placed in one compartment of a quartz cell, and a 5-g Fe-V sample was placed in each of the other compartments. "Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is gaining increasing acceptance as a decision-support tool by which to evaluate the environmental performance of a product, process or service. This is evidenced by its inclusion in international policy documents (for example in the European Union’s Integrated Product Policy) and in environmental management standards (the ISO 14 040 series of environmental management codes relate to LCA). In response to this, the minerals industry has conducted a number of commodity-specific LCAs. These include studies for global production of a number of commodities including copper, nickel, aluminium and steel. In addition, a number of minerals companies profess to use LCA as part of their suite of project and technology assessment tools. Often, this collected use represents more a situation of “we do this because we’re told it’s good for business” rather than from any demonstrable evidence of this fact. This has led to a situation of much confusion and disillusionment within the industry, exacerbated by the obvious current limitations of LCA to accurately reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals.Our point of departure here is that LCA, conforming as it does to the tenets of environmental systems analysis, is a valuable starting point, and that there is merit in exploring to what extent the methodology can be enhanced to better reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals. Specifically, we explore here the further development of LCA to address the following:• Land Use issues• Consumption of Abiotic Resources including metallic and non-metallic minerals, water and soil)• Human and Eco-toxicity issues relating to mobility and bio-availability of metals• Salinityand address these through selected experimental and simulation case studies relating to energy- and base minerals production. Advances resulting from the United Nations Environment Programme/Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Life Cycle Initiative are presented in that they directly affect the application of LCA to mining, minerals and metals. Comments are offered on how best the mining and minerals industry might interface with future developments resulting from this Initiative in order that the Initiative can deliver outcomes which render LCA a useful tool for decision making in mining and minerals processing."

"Monometallic zinc mineralization associated with marbles of the Grenville Supergroup in the Mont-Laurier Basin of Quebec is found to be stratiform and to occur (1) within limited zones of dolomitic marble and (2) more precisely along contacts between these marbles and adjacent metaclastic units. Massive sphalerite with accompanying pyrrhotite and pyrite is the prime exploration target, and commonly gives rise to good geochemical anomalies, but generally weak and ambiguous geophysical responses. Disseminated sphalerite in dolomitic marbles may signal proximity to interesting massive mineralization, although, due to weathering, this broadly disseminated mineralization may not be detected easily on outcrops. It is concluded that the western and possibly the eastern margin of the Mont-Laurier Basin constitute favourable areas for continued exploration.IntroductionThe Grenville Supergroup marbles of Ontario, Quebec and New York State host numerous occurrences of zinc mineralization (Fig. I) , several of which have been periodically mined since the beginning of this century (Fig. 2). The Balmat Edwards district of New York is the giant of this depo sit-type, with the production since 1915 of some 20 million tons of ore grading 10% zinc, and acknowledged current reserves of approximately equal tonnage and grade. At present, there is renewed interest in the potential for similar mineralization throughout the Grenville Supergroup, and this paper outlines some of the geological, geochemical and geophysical guidelines that may be employed in the search for new ore. The geologic guidelines are derived especially from lithologic and stratigraphic features which survived intense, multiphase deformation and metamorphism.Although major portions of the extensive Grenville Supergroup hold potential for zinc mineralization, the present study is confined to a known zone of mineralization in the Mont-Laurier Basin of Quebec. Concurrently, we are compiling information on the regional metallogeny of the basin so that our conclusions can be applied to areas of similar Grenville Supergroup host-rocks elsewhere."

In Pennsylvania there are two distinct coal regions, bituminous and anthracite, in which the mining conditions and production trends are different. Bituminous mining is more mechanized, and production is increasing. This report is concerned specifically with the bituminous area. The bituminous coal industry apparently is facing a shortage of miners and mine officials which may become acute by 1970. Since 1949, when Pennsylvania had more than 100,000 bituminous coal miners, the number has steadily decreased. There are two principal reasons for the decrease of certified miners and mine officials. These reasons are the fact that apprentices are almost a thing of the past and the fact that the image of the coal miner is a poor one to people in general and to parents in particular. This has contributed greatly to the high average age of our miners today. The average age of all those employed in the mines is 50. Yet it is known that the progress in mine mechanization requires younger and more alert men to operate the newer type equipment.
