Worldwide, metal mines are going deeper. For example in Canada there are six such mechanized mines planning production at 3000m (10,000?). Working at such depths challenges all aspects of mining including the provision of ventilation to supply an equitable working climate for personnel and machinery. This paper explores the overall challenges of supplying ventilation in Canada?s deepest mines and how the volumes required could be minimized. This is essential because it must be remembered that ventilation and refrigeration are not only costly items to supply, but the magnitude of their cost is also very sensitive to the volume supplied. For ventilation this is obvious because of the cubic relationship between volume and cost. In deep mines, the main function of ventilation is the removal of heat transferred from the strata and generated by the mining machinery, and the air volumes supplied are designed accordingly. The second consideration is the removal of other pollutants that could be harmful to humans such as diesel and explosive fumes. However, the need for ventilation at its present design levels could be reduced. This paper discusses the implications of such technologies as: teleremote mining and alternatives to diesel equipment on the magnitude of the volume supplied; ventilation-on-demand which recognizes ventilation as a costly and limited resource; plus other aspects, such as the benefits of controlled recirculation, local cooling, and heat rejection back to the strata to gain further advantage from new developments. Furthermore, this paper advances the need to be able to design ventilation systems more cost effectively and how such new advances as process simulators can be used in conjunction with ventilation simulators to explore the diverse options that could affect the air volumes required and provide more realistic economic data upon which to base design decisions.

Normal practice in the mining industry is the creation of a single geological model. These models provide a single interpretation of the geological and mineralisation domains. These interpretations infer the exact behaviour of ore domain contacts at shorter scales when resource definition drilling is done on wider scales and are thus locally highly uncertain. The interpreted geological model provides a single number for the volume and tonnes of mineralised material enclosed by the mineralisation envelope. It is on this single number for volume and tonnage that capital intensive mine development decisions (mine design and scheduling, stockpile strategy, waste management, closure planning, dewatering strategy, product quality, etc) are based. Some of these decisions require knowledge of grade variability for small volumes of material such as quarterly production periods. It is generally recognised that this information cannot be derived from single kriged geological models, but can potentially be modelled by conditional simulation techniques. Uncertainty in the extent and continuity of the mineralised envelope and its effect on grade variability for shorter production periods is thus recognised as a major source of uncertainty in new mine development.CITATION:Jewbali, A, Boyle, C and Phillips, J, 2013. Microcomputers are becoming more convenient to use at all levels of the business world, including the mining industry and mine offices. The state of the mining industry requires that we become more productive and innovative in our analysis of deposits and operations. With the help of computers, examination of options to increase productivity can be performed quickly and inexpensively. Effective use of the computer for designing underground workings combines the calculation power and speed of a computer with the technical expertise and judgment of the engineer. Computer programs can perform calculations in minutes that could take an engineer several months. The engineer must be on guard when using the computer for any calculation because it is very easy to assume the results produced by a computer program are always correct. The computer is a sophisticated calculator but cannot recognize logical errors nor transposition of numbers. Also some intuitive or obvious decisions made by an engineer are difficult or impossible to program effectively.

A simple and cost effective technique to increase fragmentation and burden velocities without making major modification to the overall blast design is with ALTERNATE VELOCITY LOADING OR BOOSTERING OF ANFO. The technique requires the placement of a cartridge or slug of explosive, having higher density and detonation velocity than ANFO, every few feet in an ANFO column. The greater the difference in density and detonation velocity of the Alternate Velocity Load to ANFO, the more pronounced are the results. Emulsions were selected as the Alternate Velocity test explosives because they detonate closer to ideal conditions than most other commercial explosives.

Watts opened the discussion by a general outline of the important points to be covered, in sampling a mine and the methods to be used in the various stages of the work. All the members present successively contributed details from their personal experience. The March meeting of the Section was held at its headquarters on Mar. 15. Twelve members were present, with Dr. Theodore B. Comstock in the Chair. The subject announced was Secondary Enrichment and all present took part in the discussion, Frank Robbins contributing a short paper on some observations in Central America. INTRODUCTION Thermal dryers have been utilized for reducing moisture of bituminous coal since the late 1930's. Since that time, numerous changes in the coal industry have motivated advances in thermal drying technology. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the changes that occurred to dryer design and focus on current practices of fine coal drying. The major topics discussed in this paper are: - Early Thermal Dryer Design and Evolution - Current Drying System Design and Associated Components - Current Economics of Fine Coal Thermal Drying - Future Markets and Design Considerations EARLY THERMAL DRYER DESIGN AND EVOLUTION Background The practice of drying fine coal with heated air has been performed for more than one half century. Throughout that period, both Metallurgical and Steam coal producers have used this method for reducing the surf ace moisture content of their fine plant products. During the late 1930's and early 19401s, vibrating bed and flash dryers were used to per- form the drying duties. Closed water circuits and vacuum filtration had not yet been integrated into process circuitry and centrifugal dryers were in their early stages of development. During that same period, changes in mining practices were reshaping the distribution of coal to our processing facilities. Plants originally designed for the purpose of processing coarser fractions of coal were being burdened with additional quantities of fine coal. Those plants, unable to recover fine coal, would reject these solids to plant bleed. The higher incidences of stream pollution that resulted from these events prompted clean stream legislation and the need for new, more efficient fine coal recovery circuits. The coal processing industry responded to these needs by integrating closed water circuits and filtration into circuits. The fine coal filter cakes recovered exhibited poor handling characteristics by themselves and often required further dewatering to improve their characteristics. Flash dryers at that time were being used to dry the coarser products. For those facilities operating flash dryers, the solution to this new problem appeared to be simple. The filter cake was combined with the coarser (-1/4") coal and then introduced to the flash drying column for drying. The filter cakes, however, presented significant problems for the flash drying systems. Heavy lumps of filter cake could not be dispersed and conveyed by the rising hot air and as a result would settle out in the bottom of the column. This material, known as "drop-out", would then accumulate and require further handling. The solution to this problem was not an easy one. Sophisticated mixing equipment was employed to condition the feed to the dryers. As attempts to minimize drop-out with this approach failed, the only recourse was to collect the material with conveying systems and recycle it back to the plant or dispose of it. The additional costs of handling this material reduced the attractiveness of the flash systems and opened the door for the development of a new, more cost effective coal drying system. Due to the nature of the problems experienced by the flash systems, fluid bed systems were considered. Fluid bed dryers were being used in other industries at that time but had no operating history in the coal industry. Dorr-Oliver transferred technology from other industries and built the first fluid bed drying system for fine coal.

With steadily increasing prices for imported oil, commercial production of oil from oil shale can become a reality in the near future. Presently we are importing about 43% of our oil needs and this reliance on foreign oil can be reduced by utilizing the vast resources of oil shale in the western US. The oil shale resources in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming, averaging 0.06 m3/ton (15 gal per st) and occurring in beds at least 3 m (10 ft) thick, are estimated at 293 Gm3 (1842 billion bbl) of which only 97 Gdm3 (610 billion bbl) are recoverable with current technology. The full potential of this vast resource can be realized only if significant steps are taken toward improving mining and retorting technology and solving environmental problems. Oil shales with a grade of 0.08-0.10 m3/ton (20-25 gal per st) are amenable to mining and surface retorting; whereas lower-grade oil shales may be recovered by in situ retorting.

ROLE OF GASES IN FERROUS -METALLURGICAL PROCESSES IN every process for making steel there are one or more stages where the metal is exposed to gas of one kind or another. Thus, in the open-hearth furnace, the carbon dioxide and water vapor in the products of combustion are oxidizing toward the ferrous and manganous oxides in the slag, tending to convert these to higher oxides; the higher oxides then oxidize the steel, so that indirectly the products of combustion are oxidizing toward the steel. In the Bessemer process, there is direct contact of air and steel; also, the water vapor in the air blown into the converter is continually decomposed by the molten steel, yielding hydrogen and ferrous oxide, both of which are in part taken up by the metal. In the electric-furnace processes, there is always more or less air in contact with the slag covering the metal, and this air and the gaseous reaction products from it are dissolved in the slag to some extent and thus transmitted in part to the steel. In the crucible processes, there is always entrapped air in the charges and the crucibles are more or less permeable to the gaseous products of combustion from the furnace. In all the processes of manufacture, the molten metal is exposed to air while tapping into ladles and ingot molds and has an opportunity to saturate itself with air or with gaseous or solid products generated by chemical reactions between air and steel. Sieverts1 has shown that molten metals require but a few seconds to saturate themselves with a surrounding gas. No one familiar with the operations at a steel plant needs to be reminded of the important role that gases play at all stages. A significant amount of silca is recovered in the rougher stage of anionic flotation of Florida apatite. This recovery, in the past, has been attributed to both entrainment and cation activated flotation. This study shows that by using a transport factor, it is possible to determine the contribution of each mechanism towards silica recovery. Further, it is shown that the concentration of cations in the conditioning water significantly affects both the amount of silica recovered due to entrainment and true flotation. Further confirmation of this phenomenon was obtained by Ca++ doping of the conditioning water and by using a sodium silicate depressant.

This work investigated the toughness behavior of polyester matrix composites reinforced with up to 30% in volume of long, continuous and aligned sisal fibers by means of Charpy impact tests. It was found that the addition of sisal fibers results in a marked increase in the absorbed impact energy of the composites. Macroscopic observation of the post-impact specimens and SEM fracture analysis showed that longitudinal rupture through the sisal fiber interface with the polyester matrix is the main mechanism for the remarkable toughness of these composites.

The World Financial Center is situated on a 60,000 square meter site at Battery Park City at the southern tip of Manhattan Island. The foundations for the buildings and the related infrastructure posed difficult design and construction problems since the site was filled land in the Hudson (North) River. Foundation construction was made difficult by both the geology and the existence of two railroad tunnels which passed under the site. The soils at the site were unsuitable to support construction of heavy structures, and as a result, all of the foundations had to be carried down to bedrock, or the glacial till over rock. Two buildings were supported on piling and special battered caissons which provided lateral support against wind loading. The other two buildings were supported directly on rock, requiring excavation to depths of 19 meters (63 feet) below grade.

Investigators have attempted to develop lime refractories on a scale for broad applications in the metal and ceramic industries for several decades. There was a flurry of activity in the early to mid-fifties but no commercial developments were forthcoming. The literature of that period yields little information on plant trials. A major factor suppressing past interest in lime has to have been the high success with the application of magnesic and dolomitic materials. These materials, usually tar-bonded or impregnated, have become the refractories success story of the past two decades, especially in BOF applications. It is safe to say that their development and application has essentially plateaued, and that work today is focussed on finding cheaper paths to produce MgO-based refractories. For example there are efforts underway to extract MgO from mineral magnesite and to combine natural dolomite with MgO1. Beginning in the late sixties, rather intensive research began on the development of CaO brick, especially in East and West Germany, in Poland, and other communist bloc satellites, 'and also in Italy and Spain. One speculates that the motivation was a regional shortage of good magnesia and dolomitic material. Of course, There has always existed the prospect of cost savings should it be possible to use raw limestone as the starting material. Quite a large literature has appeared treating of these developments which in the early seventies had already reached full plant scale trials and uses. Some of the directions followed in the research have led to novel methods of brick manufacture.

The Geological Survey of the U.S. Department of the Interior is primarily a domestic agency whose responsibility is furnishing impartial data and analyses to the public, private, and academic sectors of the Nation. The Survey concentrates on earth-science issues, such as mapping the land surface, determining the quality and quantity of water resources, estimating the nation's endowment of fuel and nonfuel minerals, and predicting and mitigating geologic hazards, such as those inherent in the tectonically active Pacific Rim. One of the challenges to managing this program is striking a sustainable balance between concentrating on the problems society wants solved today and investing in the research that seeds our vitality for the future. The Geological Survey's role in the Pacific results from the Nation's geography and the Nation's long standing interest in and commitment to the region. The longest segment of the U.S. coastline borders the Pacific Ocean, one of our states is a Mid-Pacific island chain, our lands are 80 degrees--nearly one-fourth--of the Pacific perimeter, and our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) underlies significant parts of the eastern, northern, and central Pacific waters. Thus, the program of marine and terrestrial science operating in these areas make substantial contributions to the world's growing understanding of the Pacific realm.

DURING the past four years the experimental work in coal washing carried on by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington has been devoted mainly to the development of special methods for the tabling of fine sizes of coals that are difficult to wash. One important outgrowth of this investigation has been the application of hindered-settling classification to coal tabling. Although used for many years in ore dressing, the term "classification" as used here may be new to many readers. It may be defined as the separation obtained when a bed of particles is held in a uniform state of suspension in an upward current of water, either continuous or pulsating, just sufficiently strong to keep the bed in a mobile condition. A common example of this type of separation is a jig in which there is no suction stroke. When the hindered-settling classifier is used with the coal-washing table, the fine-size raw coal, instead of being fed direct to tables, as is the prevailing practice, is first fed to the classifier and grouped, according to the rate of settling against the upward current of water, into perhaps six separate products. After dewatering, each of these except the sixth, a refuse product, is elevated to a seperate feed bin and washed on a separate table. This paper gives a brief discussion of the basis for the use of hindered-settling classification of a table feed; a description of the experimental work; a comparison of the results obtained with and without classification; and a discussion of the application of the classifier in commercial coal washing.

MR. J. F. MYERS, Consulting J3eneficiation Engineer, Greenwich, Conn.: In the written discussion contributed by Mr. F. C. Bond in item ( 2) (page 515), speaiking about the significance of the ratio of mill diameter to the make-up ball diameter, he states: "When this ratio exceeds 100 the power and capacity of the mill are de-creased"; and the paragraph ends with a reference to the 30 per cent ball volume "with some de-crease in mill capacity". I believe this broad statement is incorrect. When we are dealing with a non-cataracting mill, pre-ceded by a good rod mill, there is a slight increase in capacity, but the power does drop. The second point that I consider needs consideration is Mr. Bond's item (8), Proper Mill Speed (page 516). This paragraph should be qualified to cover single-stage mills only. It does not apply where a rod mill is followed by a non-cataracting ball mill. The statement as is, with no qualification, gives an erroneous idea of proper mill speeds.

It has been recognised worldwide that the liquefaction risk of unconstrained tailings stacks or cyclone underflow embankments requires careful consideration. The stability of a tailings deposit where the perimeter embankments are made up of hydraulic fill is often governed by post-liquefaction stability.Cyclones are frequently used around the world to classify tailings into a coarse underflow for building a tailings impoundment wall and a finer fraction that is disposed of into the basin. The shear strength of the tailings that form the outer embankment of a tailings storage facility (TSF) and the location of the phreatic surface are the two most significant factors influencing the structural integrity of the facility. The coarse underflow is placed in such a way as to contain the overflow, which is finer, has low strength and is often poorly consolidated.A cyclone field trial was undertaken at a gold mine in Western Australia to assess the feasibility of using the cyclone deposition method to optimise and increase the capacity of an existing tailings cell. The aim of the cyclone trial was to collect information to demonstrate to the client and the regulators that cyclone deposition was a feasible option for raising TSF embankments. The cyclone trial provided an opportunity to assess the cyclone under field conditions and the quantity and quality of the underflow fraction produced on-site. A variety of methods were used to assess the flow liquefaction susceptibility of the tailings underflow sample produced during the cyclone field trial.The field trial, laboratory testing and analysis will be discussed in this paper.CITATION:Boshoff, J and Reid, D, 2015. Con el objetivo de lograr mejoras en los resultados de los indicadores operativos, reducir costos e incrementar la rentabilidad, la unidad minera Tambomayo estableció planes de acción de corto y mediano plazo, alineados a la metodología PHVA (planificar, hacer, verificar y actuar). El presente trabajo describe la mejora continua en los procesos de dicha unidad minera, bajo una gestión de indicadores. Se planteó la implementación de un centro de control de operaciones (CCO) en el interior de la mina y se implementaron planes de mejora en los procesos de la cadena de valor del negocio minero (exploración, minado y beneficio). Se obtuvieron resultados positivos en productividad y rentabilidad, evidenciados a través de las mejoras en el desempeño de los indicadores operativos, tales como sostenibilidad de la producción y costos.

The objective of the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP)-sponsored project at Inco's Stobie mine was to conduct a long term field evaluation of diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems available to the underground mining industry. Some of the major issues studied were criteria for selecting the filter media, means of DPF regeneration, efficiency of DPF systems and the occurrence of unwanted secondary emissions, and reliability and durability of DPF systems. Nine state-of-the-art diesel particulate matter (DPM) filtration systems have been retrofitted to heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles and have been subjected to extensive long-term in-mine evaluation. Periodic efficiency tests were conducted at various stages of the study (2001, 2002 and 2004) to establish in-use efficiencies and durability of the tested DPF systems. The results were used to assess the effects of the filter systems on the concentrations of particulate matter, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide in the vehicle exhaust. The variety of filtration systems and regeneration concepts used in this study offered the opportunity to investigate their advantages and disadvantages. This paper also offers a review of selected experiences with the installation and operation of the DPF systems on underground mining vehicles at the Inco Stobie Mine.

THE essential principle of this new process, now in operation in Chili and in North Carolina, for the extraction of copper from its ores, is the dissolving of the oxides of copper by a hot solution of protochloride of iron and common salt. In the action which takes place, the protochloride of iron is converted into peroxide, while the oxides of copper are changed into protochloride and dichloride, the latter of which, though insoluble in water, is readily soluble in a hot strong brine. From the solution thus obtained, metallic iron throws down the copper in a metallic state, regenerating the protochloride of iron; which is then ready for the treatment of a fresh portion of oxidized copper ore. In the case of slimy ores, the contact of the bath with the ore is effected by agitation in tubs; but when the ores are granular, lixiviation in large vats is equally efficient and simpler. The hot solutions, charged with chlorides of copper, are digested in tanks with scrap-iron, or better, are made to flow through covered channels containing the scrap-iron, and in their passage lose the whole of their copper; the reaction at the same time evolving so much heat as to keep up the temperature of the liquid. In order to prevent a certain loss of chlorine, which otherwise takes place from the production of some basic ferric chloride in the reaction between the ferrous chloride and the oxides of copper (both protoxide and dinoxide being generally present in calcined ores), a portion of sulphurous fumes from the roasting is made to pass through the regenerated bath before adding it to fresh ore. This has hitherto been effected by injection, with the aid of a jet of steam.
