Human-caused global warming has become the environmental cause celebre of the early 21st century. The strong warming alarmist camp currently includes the United Nations, most Western governments, most of the free press, many large corporations (including Enron, before it failed), the major churches, most scientific organisations and a large portion of general public opinion. This phalanx of support notwithstanding there is no scientific consensus as to the danger of human-induced climate change. There is, therefore, a strong conflict between the level of public alarm and its scientific justification. How can this be? In a democracy, the media serve to convey to the public the facts and hypotheses of climate change as provided by individual scientists, governmental and international research agencies, and NGO and other lobby groups. In general, the media have promulgated an alarmist cause for climate change; they have certainly failed to convey the degree of uncertainty that is characteristic of climate science, or a balanced summary of the many essential facts that are relevant to human causation. Climate change is as much a geological as it is a meteorological issue. Natural climate changes, both warmings and coolings, are indeed a societal hazard. We usually deal with geological hazards by providing civil defence authorities and the public with accurate, evidence-based, general information about events like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and floods, and then by adapting to the effects when a damaging event occurs. As for other major natural disasters, the appropriate preparation for extreme climate events is to mitigate and manage the negative effects when they occur, and especially so for dangerous coolings. Attempting instead to æstop climate changeÆ by reducing human carbon dioxide emissions is a costly exercise of utter futility. Rational climate policies must be based on adaptation to dangerous change as and when it occurs, and irrespective of its sign or causation. The issue now is no longer climate change as such, the reality of which will always be with us. Rather, the issues are, first, the failure of the free press to inform the public about the true facts of human-caused climate change and of the dangers posed by natural climate change. And, second, the vested interests held by many of the groups of warming alarmists. These interests include not only the obvious commercial ones, but also the many scientists and science managers who have discounted or remained silent about the huge uncertainties of the human-caused global warming hypothesis because it suited them to do so. Public opinion will soon demand an explanation as to why experienced editors and hardened investigative journalists, worldwide, have melted before the blowtorch of self-induced guilt, political correctness and special interest expediency that marks the sophisms of global warming alarmists.

It has often been said that the best contracts written are by people who are suspicious of each other. The Spanish philosopher, Ortega y Gasset, said: "Every contract is an Act of Distrust." The arena for dispute settlement outside of the courts is increasing day by day - contracts, especially construction and civil engineering contracts, are written containing arbitration clauses for settling disputes - the very drafting of standard forms of contract, do in some instances by their very construction, create an ambiguity as to intent and provide a breeding ground for dispute. I come from a land far across the sea - the most southern land before the South Pole. Being a young country, 150 years old, we are still progressing - being far removed from the trouble free zones of the world and nuclear free we enjoy a lifestyle second to none.

"The Linear Wear Theory provides a reliable framework for the assessment of grinding media performance at full scale. This theory can be applied for analyzing grinding media consumption rates in any given grinding operation as well as the evaluation of alternative grinding media products, based on actual operational data, correcting for conditions like ore hardness, feed and product sizes, mill power and circuit throughput; all of them unrelated to the grinding media intrinsic quality attributes. A series of Moly-Cop Tools 3.0 applications have been developed to facilitate the calculations involved. Moly-Cop Tools 3.0 is available, free of charge, to all interested parties through the corresponding author.INTRODUCTION Mineral grinding circuit operators recognize the significance of grinding media (balls) consumption on the cost structure of any full scale grinding facility. The effective cost associated with this essential consumable depends on two factors: delivered price and durability (quality) of the grinding media. When evaluating alternative grinding media varieties, there is a well accepted evaluation criterion by which a given media type is considered to be “cost-effective” when its unit application cost – normally expressed in $/ton of ore ground – is shown to be lower than that of a nominal reference condition: Grinding Media Cost = Ball Price x Ball Consumption (1) ($ /ton ground) ($/ton balls) (ton balls/ton ground) Under this criterion, an alternative, higher-price grinding media product could be “cost-effective” if its associated consumption rate is sufficiently lower than the reference media, enough to yield a lower grinding cost, as dictated by Equation 1. For the proper application of the above criterion, evaluators must rely on representative indicators of grinding media quality, ideally independent of most mill operating conditions. In each particular case, ball price is always a known component; however, it is not so evident how media performance (quality) differences amongst alternative product types could be assessed with a reasonable degree of accuracy and precision."

THE origin of spontaneous combustion in collieries is, of course, chiefly due to bad system in laying out the pits, unclean workings, insufficient ventilation, and neglect in damming off works after they are exhausted of the main coal. This is particularly indispensable in the Richmond field, because it is difficult and dangerous here, on account of the inferior roof, to remove the last vestiges of coal ; and we are compelled also to retain all the slates and bands, as far as possible, in the pit, to help fill up, although such material is liable to fire. This, however, can be prevented to a great extent, as men¬tioned below. I am satisfied that the only system of working this thick coal is by cross-cutting ( Querbau, ouvrage à travers) or working in benches, as practiced in France (Creusot, Rive de Gier, St. Etienne), in Sile¬sia (Königsgrube), which I have used as far as it is practicable in an old pit, almost torn to pieces by former workings. Modifications may, of course, be needed, even in the same pit, on account of irregu¬larities in the seam. I am also satisfied for economical reasons (on account of the heavy cost for timbering) that pits here ought to be worked upwards, even if it requires a longer period of time to win the coal, and a greater outlay of capital to commence with. The various saddle-shaped "troubles" making natural minor basins in the main basin aid in the execution of this plan. A pit worked once ought to be worked out clean, given up, and dammed off forever. If sections of proper height are assumed, according to the required amount of production for a certain period of time, they ought to be worked out and filled in as much as possible, dammed off, and ulti¬mately allowed to fill up with water, in order to protect the tipper works in future from fire in the gob below. This I consider indispen¬sable, because we may not be able profitably to fill in all the ground. To do so we have to use the waste of the mine, although it is liable to fire in time. In using this stuff, it ought to be surrounded by walls of rock not liable to take fire, laid firmly in clay, the gob being in the middle, and firmly covered and packed with clay on top. In

In New Zealand, volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits are found in three main geological environments associated with: 1.   ophiolitic basalts of Oligocene age in Northland and East Cape (eg Pupuke, Pakotai, Parakao and Lottin Point); 2.   with chert and pillow lava in greywacke sequences of Permian-Jurassic age (Torlesse and Waipapa terranes; eg Kawau Island, Te Kumi and Maharahara) and their metamorphic equivalents (Haast Schist; eg Moke Creek and Waitahuna); and 3.   with greenschists (metabasalts) and metaserpentinite of Permian-Triassic age (Ponamu Ultramafics) in Westland (eg Bowen and Wilberg ranges). The deposits consist of small lenses of disseminated to massive sulfide minerals, mainly pyrite and chalcopyrite. Small quantities of copper ore were mined from some deposits in the 1800s (eg Kawau Island from 1846), with the last mining at Parakao from 1961 to 1966. Several deposits have been recently examined for their gold potential with assays on sulfide rock samples as high as 75 g/t Au (Lottin Point).

Within a phosphorus producing submerged arc furnace it was found that the continuous fluctuation of the furnace between a flowrate-driven state (high throughput) and a thermodynamic-driven state (low throughput) caused both techniques to have similar overall, predictive abilities and resulted in a linear, ARX-type, adaptive prediction model as the model of choice. Secondly, this pre-diction model was developed, tested and then shown to have a reasonable, 8-hour-ahead predictive accuracy (R2, coefficient of determination) of 30% (±6%) on future Pslag values. This inherent relationship exists because, at the precise moment of a Pslag prediction, the furnace already contains the metallurgical memory (input variables to the linear model) needed to ensure that some predictive possibilities will always exists - all as a result of the long residence times in the furnace. Residence time, however, is not a directly adjustable variable but rather a fully dependent variable and a function of an array of interconnected and interactive variables. In fact, this applies to virtually all input variables, reemphasising the importance of innate metallurgical memory. Thirdly, predictive control possibilities were explored by simulating the set-points of two fully independent variables used by operators to control the process: the ratio of fixed carbon-to-P2O5 and the ratio of silica gravel-to-pellets. This linear, predictive control model showed only a slight improvement with an 8-hour-ahead predictive accuracy of 35% (±7%). This highlights how ineffective current adjustments are in optimally steering the process and how difficult even incremental improvements in feed-forward and predictive control can be. Finally, it is shown that fundamental design-, sampling- and process restrictions currently associated with the process will always limit the predictive and especially control accuracy or meaningfulness of any dynamic model. These restrictions include the size of the furnace resulting in long residence times, 8-hours sampling intervals, an extremely complex and interactive process and a 16% spatial analyses variation on the Pslag values ? the very value that the model is to predict. The point is made that, given the current status quo, even the perfect dynamic prediction model can not improve on an 8-hour-ahead prediction of 30% (±6%). This barrier can only be pierced with e.g. tidier and more frequent sampling regimes and other upfront capital investments, a decision that becomes a cost accounting exercise and that can only be taken by the management structure. An investment demanding ever-increasing attention is CFD software and it?s potential to shed more light on the complex interactions within the furnace.

"Mining processing plants are the most high-performing industrial enterprises in the world economy system. Even at an average-scale mining enterprise, the grain-size separation equipment continuously processes 105 to 106 dissimilar mineral particles per hour. In separation by physical properties, their number increases by at least 10 to 50 times. Mathematical modeling of such a high flow of discrete particles is carried out using two different approaches: the discrete-particle and the phenomenological methods. The calculations demonstrate the possibility of handling big data when describing the processes of separation of granular material. INTRODUCTION The interest to the screening process and the process of formation of new screen designs in Mekhanobr is traditional since the moment of its foundation. It is symbolical that the first publication of the Mekhanobr proceedings in 1924 was the monograph dedicated to screens and screening products as such, which was the first one in the world at that moment. It was a book of Prof. L. B. Levenson, one of the founders of Mekhanobr, who headed the Technical Bureau of the Institute. Vibratory screening is the most mass process in the technologies of solid minerals processing, which determines significantly the energy demands of crushing and grinding cycles, and at some enterprises determines the quality of the final product, for example in case of crushed stone, coal or abrasive materials production. The general understanding and simulation of the process of poly-dispersed granular materials vibratory screening was developed at several conceptual levels taking into account the features of classification of materials with different size and density.Considering the real industrial processes of vibration screening, it shall be noted that at the sieve surface of the screen in the initial part of the deck the classification in a thick material layer (in natural conditions) occurs, which further transfers to a thin layer (free movement). In the process of screening of light minerals, for example coal or metallurgic feedstock, screening is mainly performed in the thick layer."

Equity finance provides the most suitable and frequently the only access to capital during the exploration and evaluation stages of resource projects when project risk is at its highest. Investors are prepared to provide equity funds in the knowledge that they are compensated for the higher risk they take on with higher potential returns or sufficient upside potential to justify the higher risk. The context of resource projects which determines the role of equity finance has changed considerably. Prior to the resurgence of the gold price and the development of new mining technology many resource projects were selectively mining orebodies by underground methods frequently with limited reserves proved up in advance of mining. The limited proved ore reserves base and the volatility of the gold price all contributed to a higher risk and higher return investment environment in which the use of equity finance was more appropriate and frequently the only option for capital raising. The financial risk of a resources project can be transferred to an underwriter who makes the commitment to distribute the financial risk between a number of investors. There is also the opportunity for financiers to use a mix of equity and debt finance to allow a company to proceed with the development stage where without such a mix the resource project would not proceed. By using a level of equity finance the project becomes robust enough in its ability to service the debt finance facility and the project proceeds with the equity participants receiving a suitable risk reward return. The liquidity from the establishment of a market for the company's securities enhances further capital raising and generally enables the company to satisfy its financial requirements on more favourable terms particularly during bull markets. The role of equity finance in the management of the financial risk during the exploration, evaluation, development and mining stages of resource projects is summarised in Table 1. In more detail the principal roles of equity finance and the ways in which equity finance impact on the risk management of resource projects will be considered in turn.

The role of microorganisms in the leaching of metal sulfides is well established (Torma, 1977; Murr, 1980). However, this established knowledge applies mostly to chemolithotropic microorganisms such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans which function optimally in leaching catalysis between 25-35° C, and in a pH range of 2-2.5. Although leaching with thermophilic microorganisms capable of extending the range of catalytic viability beyond 35° C is also documented, there are few if any attempts to optimize or extend sulfide concentrate leaching with thermophilic microorganisms. When mixed metal sulfides or other materials having different rest potentials (referenced to the standard hydrogen electrode, SHE, in the electromotive series) make contact in a conducting, aqueous medium, the contacting members will act as an electrochemical cell, with the member having the higher rest potential assuming the role of an electrical cathode. In leaching reactions involving such galvanic couples, the cathode becomes passivated, while the anodic member reacts vigorously due to the electro- chemical reaction which occurs (Hiskey and Wads- worth, 1975). Serry, eta1 (1978) observed that when chalcopyrite and pyrite were in intimate contact in natural ores, the chalcopyrite reacted vigorously by galvanic conversion as a result of the higher rest potential (~ 0.63 V) as compared to the chalcopyrite (~ 0.53 V). In addition, it was postulated that because of the elemental sulfur which can form on the anodic chalcopyrite in this galvanic conversion process, reactions in acid-bacterial medium would be expected to have accelerated copper extraction because of the conversion of any sulfur product layer on the chalcopyrite anode to sulfuric acid according to the following general reactions: [MS?M2+ + S° + 2e- (1) and 2S° + 302 + 2H20 bacteria?-2H2SO 4 (2)] where M in reaction (1) designates the metal (or metals in the specific case of chalcopyrite) to be released to solution by galvanic conversion.

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted full-scale field tests in electro-kinetic dewatering and consolidation of slimes in cooperation with the Hecla Mining Co. at two of the firm's underground mines in north Idaho. To test the technique on new deposits, 4,000 ft3 of slimes from a collection sump, pumped into a watertight stope equipped with electrodes, were treated in two steps. Immediately after placement, direct current was applied using a floating electrode to hasten settlement of suspended fine particles. After removal of clarified water, the residue was further dewatered and hardened with electrokinetic treatment. In 25 hours, the material had become firm and dense with a surface capable of supporting workmen. In testing old deposits, 10,000 ft3 of slimes, placed in an unused tail drift 10 to 12 months previously, were treated. This material was sufficiently consolidated by electrokinetics to allow its removal from the mine with standard ore-handling equipment. In both tests, electrokinetic treatment densified slimes in a relatively short time with moderate power consumption.

Six compositions of polycrystalline ZY-0 alloys, containing up to 4.2 at. pct 0, were tested in tension between 77° and 600° K. The data obtained from each of the compositions corresponded closely to a rela-ion between yield stress and absolute temperature of the form In s/so = BT, where oo is the yield stress extrapolated to zero degrees and B is a constant. In agreement with others who have observed this relationship, it is shown that the activation energy may be expressed as Ho In so/s. In the present specimens Ho is approximately 18,000 cal per mole and is apparently independent of temperature and composition inside the limits of the investigation. It is also demonstrated that this form of activation energy cowesponds to a strain rate sensitivity parameter RT/Ho. Oxygen was also noted to have an effect upon the operative deformation mechanisms. With increasing oxygen concentration there was an increased tendency to observe both nonbasal slip and cross-slip phenomena. Oxygen does not seriously inhibit twinning more than it does slip. Twins were observed in all specimens tested. It is becoming increasingly evident that interstitial atoms in solid solution are able to interact strongly with mobile dislocations. Stein, Low, and seybolt,&apos; have shown that, if the carbon concentration in bcc iron is lowered below the solubility limit, its flow stress temperature dependence is markedly reduced. This suggests that carbon atoms in interstitial solid solution may be responsible for the pronounced temperature dependence of the flow stress normally observed in iron. This view has recently been challenged by Leslie and sober2 who observed a strong flow stress temperature dependence in iron to which a trace of titanium had been added in order to remove carbon atoms from solution. Since the interstitial concentration must be reduced below approximately 1 ppm in order to produce a pronounced effect on the flow stress temperature dependence,&apos; studies of the effect of interstitials on the flow stress in iron necessarily involve serious experimental difficulties in alloy preparation. There are other metals, however, in which strong effects of interstitial solutes upon both the flow stress and its temperature dependence are observed. Of particular significance is zirconium which, according to Domagala and Mcpherson, 3 is capable of dissolving 28.6 at. pct O. The O-Zr alloy system is an almost ideal system for studying the interaction of interstitial atoms with deformation modes since it is possible to form alloys capable of study over an extensive range of compositions. Mills has made such a study using single crystals oriented primarily for single prismatic slip4 and has found an effect of oxygen concentration on the flow stress temperature dependence analogous to that observed in iron due to carbon by Stein, Low, and Seybolt. The present paper is specifically concerned with the effect of oxygen on deformation in polycrystalline zirconium. Although plastic flow in this type of specimen is much more complex than that reported for the single-crystal work, and involves both slip (on several different types of planes) and mechanical twinning, the results of this investigation are in general agreement with the single-crystal observations concerning the effect of oxygen on the temperature dependence of the flow stress. In addition, they also demonstrate that oxygen affects the acting deformation systems. This is in contrast to single-crystal results4 that showed only single slip on a prism plane. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material. High-purity hot-rolled zirconium strip, 0.2 in. thick by 4 in. wide, of 0.10-mm average grain diameter, was used for forming alloys. It was obtained from the Carborundum Metals Co., Akron, N.Y., whose analysis indicated the major impurities were, in wt ppm: Hf, 540, C, 145; Fe, 100; and 0, <80. The plate texture was similar to a wire texture, with basal planes generally parallel to the rolling direction and basal poles randomly distributed about the rolling direction. The heat treatments described below did not appreciably alter the basic texture. specimen Preparation. Small threaded-end tensile specimens were machined from the plate with axes perpendicular to the rolling direction. These transverse specimens had gage sections 1 in. long by 0.060 in. in diam. Safe escape from coal mine fires continues to be a concern of the mining industry. The most life-threatening fires occur outby the working sections. Because stoppings always leak some air, an outby fire may in time cause intake escapeways to become contaminated with smoke and toxic gases. Smoke and gas infiltration into intake escapeways can be minimized by raising their air pressure over that of adjacent airways. This can be done by checking off the intake escapeway near the working face. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the use of a parachute stopping as a quick-erect check curtain during mine fires, and the concept has been tested in several mines. In every instance, when a parachute stopping was erected on the section, the intake pressure went up substantially. The pressure-raising effect of the parachute persisted for up to 1200 m (4000 ft) outby. Results indicate that checking off the intake escapeway may serve as a viable way to improve safety during mine fires.

Most mine ventilation engineers are involved in ventilation planning and design in some capacity. Ventilation modelling software used by a competent experienced ventilation engineer is extremely useful in developing good ventilation designs by allowing assessment of a wide range of potential options. Unfortunately, ventilation modelling undertaken by persons who do not have sufficient experience or knowledge usually results in a fa&#231;ade that covers up a fundamentally unsatisfactory design. Ventilation models are produced for a wide variety of purposes including: fault-finding of a problem area in a mine and options analysis for resolution of such problems; a complete review or optimisation exercise of an entire mine’s ventilation system; or a much longer life-of-mine type of study. Models can be intended as the basis for studies with diverse purposes such as primary shaft or airway sizing, primary fan specification, examining re-entry times after blasting, resolving leakage or recirculation, or investigating the impact of fires or underground climate or cooling requirements. The concepts of ‘materiality’ and ‘fitness for purpose’ are essential to developing or using a ventilation model and serious mistakes have been made in wrongly using a ventilation model for purposes for which it was never intended, often because it is simply the most recent model on the mine site. Mistakes at this level often translate into faulty ventilation strategies and inefficient or ineffective use of scarce capital for ventilation projects. Validating a ventilation model is a time-consuming and expensive process and not every model must (or even should) be fully validated to meet the objectives at that time. This paper discusses the application of quality assurance in ventilation planning with particular respect to the ‘basis of design’ (BOD) as well as the standards for validating a ventilation model. A party of some 60 members of the Institute were welcomed at the Union Junction Works of Scaw Metals Limited on Thursday, 23rd January for a morning visit. Dr J. M. Bereza, the metallurgical Director, gave an informative introductory talk to the assembled visitors, which briefly covered the major activities of the Company. This was followed by refreshments, and the visitors were then allocated to 12 guides for the conducted tour of the Works. The progress of the Company is an impressive saga of the development of heavy industry in this country linked primarily to the expanding mining industry. Many other outlets are now available for Scaw products and the rapidly advancing techniques developed by their own chemists as well as the processes made available from overseas associates indicates the forward looking attitude of the Company. The visitors were impressed by the modern laboratory services, closely linked to rigid quality control, resulting in a high standard of final products. The most fascinating section to many of the visitors was the continuous casting machines and rolling mills recently installed, although the most lucrative section is the large steel foundry. After the tour the parties gathered in a marquee tent for liquid refreshments, followed by a lavish luncheon in the canteen. The visitors were officially welcomed by Mr Richard Boustred, the Deputy Managing Director, and Mr V. C. Robinson replied, thanking the Company on behalf of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Arrangements were made for golf in the afternoon at the Germiston Golf Club for those who wished to play. A.E.G.

Planning today for what hopefully will never happen is one of the surest ways to decrease the chance of it happening. As Napoleon proved and Ian Mitroff wrote, "The heat and stress of battle is the worst time to make decisions of strategic importance." Mitroff also wrote, "The value of a plan is not that it will ever perfectly match reality, but going through the process of planning speeds the process of recovery. It allows the organization to emotionally work through the worst before it actually happens." This paper concentrates on things miners must consider; on the need for plans to be like a belt conveyor strong enough to carry the load, flexible enough to stretch a little; on the criticality of throwing away fax machines and telephones, and having certain officials at the scene rather than back in head-quarters; on the training of fire brigades and mine-rescue teams; on having company-controlled chromatographs; on having people who can look at trends rather than numbers. Some of the things in this paper might anger some readers; for that, I can only ask them to consider first the problem not their position.

"This article makes evident the shortcomings of the current operation of oxygen pipes as well as the damages they cause and why they cause them. When focusing on the causes and effects of these drawbacks, it was possible to develop a new family of thermal lances that could pierce a taphole with the precision of a drill but with the capacity to complete the whole operation. Although efforts have been made to replace oxygen pipes since they are annoying, dangerous and inefficient, nobody had worked to improve the way the traditional oxygen pipe taps/perforates the furnaces and reactors tapholes. In fact, developments made in drills and robotic arms, have failed to replace the oxygen pipe, which despite their negative side effects have been used for more than a century. Observation and theory were key to radically transform this humble tool into a dependable and efficient support in the operation. A good news that it is worthwhile to share for the benefit of all of us, passionate about the world of pyro metallurgy.INTRODUCTION Normally, reports and papers prepared for conventions, symposia or other technical events related to metallurgy aim to relevant topics in the operational field, probably because in them lay the scale economies every company pursues. We intend to give relevance to a matter normally disregarded in operations, but that unmistakably vital: if the furnace or reactor cannot be bled, the pyrometallurgical process will not be completed. Besides, if the tapping task is difficult or is long delayed, the availability of the furnace will be reduced. Consequently, there will be a waste of energy and workers will be exposed to dangerous levels of radiation as well as to work overload and physical injuries Apart from these basic effects, in tapping operations where oxygen pipes are used, we can see serious damages in the smelting furnace, especially in the taphole components such as refractory bricks, taphole jackets and water cooled plates. This paper intends to show that taking care of the tapping task can significantly upgrade not only to the tapping operation itself, but also the whole plant productivity."

In recent years the hue and cry of American industry concerning the pressure of foreign competition on the domestic marketplace has become all too familiar to most of us, as we are all well aware, the steel industry has not been exempted from this pressure, reduced production levels, work force cutbacks, and in some extreme cases, plant closings and company liquidations have resulted, new regulations governing imports and quotas have been enacted, foreign trade agreements reached, and more strict regulation enforcement practices undertaken, despite these, and other measures, the impact of aggressive foreign competition has not lessened, the concensus of numerous management consultants is that in order to successfully cope with these problems we must draw on all available technology to provide the tools which will enable us to enhance our management effectiveness, one area requiring particularly close attention in any mining operation is that of managing critical resources - namely time, energy and equipment in a fast and efficient manner, In mining, with critical resources deployed over a large geographical area, any degree of success involved with resource management is dependent upon knowing the current status of all work related activities, if we, as mine operators, are to be more successful in this area, additional tools are a necessity and modern technology has provided a multitude of new options from which to choose.

Marine mineral resources have been reviewed in great detail on numerous occasions over the past few years. A summary of these efforts would indicate there is little new on the horizon as far as economic programs are concerned. Deep ocean minerals, though not forgotten, hold little promise for development in the immediate future, i. e., manganese nodules, cobalt crusts, polymetallic sulfides, etc. Nearer to shore, within the EEZ, and particularly within waters under state control greater industrial interest is expressed. Interest in sand and gravel not only persists but is growing, dependent largely upon the construction industry. Precious metals demonstrate the greatest growth potential.
