Intrusion related Cu/Au mineralisation is localised in Pacific Rim island arcs by arc parallel, termed accretionary structures; or arc normal, termed transfer structures. In Papua New Guinea, NE trending transfer structures, evident on Landsat imagery, represent deep crustal fractures which have facilitated dextral rotation of the mainland during oblique plate collision. Major structures localise intrusion centres, and by rotation, develop ore hosting dilational environ-ments in subsidiary structures. While transfer structures localise the Porgera, Wafi and Yandera porphyry centres, the Frieda Porphyry and associated Nena high sulphidation Cu/Au mineralisation are localised by accretionary structures. The Bulolo Graben, which hosts the Morobe Goldfield, developed during intra arc rifting aided by movement on transfer structures. Crustal thinning has initiated magmatism with which diatreme breccias and fracture controlled mineralisation are associated.

In spite of the increasingly high capital investment required for longwall mining equipment, there continues to be a steady trend towards this form of mining. This move is caused in large part by improved productivity of longwall mining systems combined with greater percentage of coal recovered over room and pillar mining, reduced manpower requirements, and the inherent safety of the system. Longwall mining is most amenable to the greater depths experienced by many mining operations, particularly in the coalfields of the Eastern United States. Two primary problems in the installation of a longwall panel are determining whether a particular seam is suitable for longwall and, secondly, type and capacity of equipment required for such a mining operation. In addition, recent legislation has forced an evaluation of the surface effects of longwall mining with a view to determining what, if any, surface damage might result from extracting any particular panel. These factors must be determined using large and often complex quantities of geological, structural, mining, and surface data. This makes the problem most attractive to solution using the computer.

The mechanization of platinum group metal (PGM) underground reef mining in South Africa has posed a challenge to mining engineers for several decades. This is primarily due to the shallow dip angles and narrow thickness (<1.1m) of the tabular orebodies mined, and the issues faced in developing reliable drilling, bolting and loading machines suitable for such hard-rock mining applications. Presently, mining is typically conducted using hand drills and scraper shovels. These methods, however, are intensive in terms of manual labor, and limited in terms of productivity, and improved methods are desired. This paper will review the technical features of a 4 tonne, low-profile, LHD for narrow-reef PGM mining, developed by EJC Loaders Division.

Low levels of thallium were detected in the mine water drainages, and process water discharges of western mining and smelting operations. This required remediation under state regulatory standards, which allow discharges of no more than .0017 ppm thallium in mine water discharges. Influent streams containing thallium can be mitigated to state discharge standards after a single pass through the series of fluidized upflow columns. Test work to determine the optimal flow rates used pilot scale systems at two separate locations treating 5 - 25 gpm of effluent. The test system at the gold mine mimics the full-scale system, which will be based on the existing upflow carbon tanks that have been converted to zeolite columns. The system installed at ASARCO&apos;s East Helena smelter has a far more complex influent stream with a high loading of competing cations. Nevertheless the columns filled with CABSORB® are successfully mitigating the thallium contamination. CABSORB® ZS500RW is a product based on the sodium analog of the zeolite mineral chabazite named herschelite.

Laboratory flotation tests were carried out on six Polish samples of different rank. Each coal sample was screened into 7 size fractions. The floatability of size -by- size for various size ranges for different samples was investigated as: well as the original samples. The results showed that in flotation of size -by -size, the intermediate size had the maximum floatability. The range of this intermediate sizes varied with the rank of the coal. Entrainment was shown to be an important mechanism to the recovery of fine particles in flotation of the original samples".

The Sheppard Subway extension is currently being constructed in Toronto, Canada for the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). McNally International Inc., in a joint venture with PCL and the Foundation Company of Canada were awarded the Twin Tunnels contract of the Sheppard extension. The Twin Tunnels project is approximately 4.4 km in length and consists of two separate twin bore drives each 3.3 km and 650 m in length and approximately 400 m of cut and cover construction. This paper presents a case history of the construction of the soft ground tunnels through the complex Toronto glacial deposits using two 5.9 m outside diameter Lovat earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines.

The use of dilute sulphur dioxide (SO2) gas mixtures for the oxidation/precipitation of manganese has been explored widely in recent years. The technical merit of the concept is well proven and implementation of the technology on commercial scale is imminent. This paper reviews the technology of manganese removal by means of dilute SO2 gas mixtures and highlights some of the challenges associated with its implementation on industrial scale. A brief review of the technology is presented; the review considers both the mechanism and chemistry of manganese oxidation/precipitation with dilute SO2 gas mixtures. The impact of variables such as temperature, pH and SO2 concentrations on the manganese removal process is assessed. Challenges associated with implementation of the technology on industrial scale are discussed. Gas dispersion is highlighted as a critical design consideration.

The spatial distribution of ore with similar processing properties or domains within an orebody may be identified early in the assessment of an orebody to provide a sound basis for later development of the orebody. The assignment of domains in the primary sulfide portion of an orebody is often more difficult than recognition of the oxidised, supergene and related domains usually located towards the top of the mineralised volume. This paper will discuss some approaches to assigning domains within the primary sulfide portion of an orebody. The processing properties of each mining block will be known if the contained domain(s) and their proportions are known. The use of both physical and chemical ore properties to assign the domains is discussed. The domains based on similar processing properties do not necessarily coincide with geological zones assigned by geoscientists. As part of assessing the physical properties of ore, the modal analysis of the ore with respect to the valuable sulfide minerals and the sulfide and non sulfide gangue minerals has to be known, along with the traditionally used elemental assays for valuable and penalty elements. Two scales for determining other physical ore properties will be considered: the mesoscopic scale (examined by human eye) and the microscopic scale (examined via a microscope under high magnification). The strengths and weaknesses of the data obtained at the two scales are discussed in the paper. Broadly, data collected at the mesoscopic scale are much less expensive but the types of data available are more limited. Methods for evaluation of chemical ore properties are also discussed. After establishing a basis for establishing the spatial distribution of domains, variability testing is required to verify the integrity of the designated domains. In contrast, each block of ore in some orebodies has been assessed principally via the results of a laboratory separation on a number of drill core samples or composites from throughout the block, with minimal or no attention to the concept of domains.

GREINER, Marsh, and Stoughton1 have reviewed the literature in a monograph on the iron-silicon system. The lack of agreement among the various studies may be due to the difference in the purity of materials in some cases. The results of the X-ray method indicate only a general rather than a specific limit of the y loop. The iron-titanium system was investigated by Roe and Fishel,&apos; whose results are used in determining the iron-silicon-titanium y loop. The literature indicates that no study has been made thus far of the iron-silicon-titanium system in the y loop region. Experimental Procedure The alloys were made from Armco iron, 99.86 pct Si, and 98.5 pct Ti. The titanium contains 1.07 pct Fe. The Armco iron contains 0.01 pct C, 0.005 pct Si, 0.02 pct Mn, 0.006 pct P, 0.01 pct S, and 0.04 pct Cu. A dilatation sample of Armco iron was prepared in the same manner as were the other samples. Several dilatation runs indicated that Ac3 begins at 905°C and ends at 910°C, which compares favorably with the study of Wells, Ackley, and Mehl&apos; employing specially purified iron. All alloys were melted in an induction furnace in Alundum crucibles and were top poured into baked core sand molds. The ingots weighed about 600 g as cast. Dilatation samples of 4 in. by % in. diam were taken from the bottom end of the ingot, from which turnings for analysis were taken. Turnings from each end of two of the samples indicated that the alloys possessed uniform silicon content. A hole was drilled halfway through each end of a 4 in, dilatation sample. A chromel-alumel thermocouple was inserted in each hole and the surrounding metal peened in to hold the thermocouple in place. Fig. 1 represents the dilatation apparatus. The heating unit is an Alundum tube wound with resistance wire; the dilatation tube is a McDanel combustion tube; the push rod is zircon; the dial gage is graduated in 0.0001 in. and was vibrated to prevent sticking. A blank run over the temperature range of interest gave no significant dilatation. The thermocouples were attached to a multiple recording micromax which indicated the temperature at each end of the sample at 35 sec intervals. "A new UMG-Si refining concept has been proposed in this paper. Liquid Si and another liquid metal phase (Me) were separated by the molten slag spontaneously based on their different physicochemical properties. Two metal/slag distribution reactions are able to occur in the system simultaneously. Experimental investigation on the B and P distribution equilibria among Si/slag/Me was carried out in the graphite resistance furnace under the inert atmosphere. The B and P doped silicon was in equilibrium with either the SiO2-CaO or SiO2-CaO-l0%CaF2 slags at 1600 and 1650°C, respectively. The pure Fe and Cu metals were used in order to ""capture"" B and P in the slag phases. B and P in samples were determined by the ICP-MS. B and P distribution coefficients for the Si/slag/Me equilibria were compared with the theoretical calculations. The possible kinetic barriers for the Si/slag/Me three-layer equilibria have been analyzed. The metal contaminations in the three-layer equilibria were also examined. The present study provides a new approach for the refining of MG-Si.IntroductionMost of the impurities in the metallurgical silicon (MG-Si) are rather ""dilute'', ranging from few to several thousand ppms. However, the target impurity levels for upgrade metallurgical silicon (UMG-Si) feedstock are often far below the level of ppm. In such extreme case, the conventional refining technologies face the great technical challenges. B removal by slagging has already been implemented industrially. Removal of Pis frequently carried out by the vacuum distillation. The separating treatments for B and P removals lead to increase refining cost, total CO2 emission and longer pay-back time of solar cell module.It is well known that the phosphate capacities of slags in equilibrium with liquid silicon are extremely lower. However, if we introduce another phase that possesses high ""phosphor capacity"" into the Si/slag system, one would expect to continuously remove P from Si through molten slag to the new ""phosphor capturer"". The so-called three-layer refming concept is thus proposed in the present study. Liquid Si and another liquid phase (Me) are separated by the molten slag spontaneously based on their different physicochemical properties. Two metal/slag distribution reactions are able to occur in the system simultaneously."

Copper and nickel are extracted from their elemental state, complex sulfides, ores, and other materials such as scrap by leaching them with a solution containing halogen salts - bromine/bromide, and/or iodide/iodine, oxygen and sodium or potassium nitrate. This US patented process is extremely effective yielding 98% recovery in15 minutes for the treatment of chalcopyrite and pentlandite in an autoclave at a temperature of 100°C - 150°C.

Coarse particle size measurement is essential for the automatic control of a size reduction process like crushing or SAG milling in order to achieve optimal process performance. However, the on-line size measurement of coarse material is not easily obtained due to the problems of material handling and sample statistics. A technique based on advanced image analysis and quantitative stereology has been successfully developed and tested in a pilot scale setting. The chord length distribution of coarse particles on a moving conveyor was measured with an image analyzer and then transformed to the mesh size distribution with a stereological model and a special numerical method. Some test results as well as the technique&apos;s industrial suitability and limitations of this method are also discussed.

A sustainable coal industry needs to achieve a number objectives concerning mainly with superior utilisation of deposits and improved environmental performance. Modern quality control systems, which are greatly based on the on-line analysers, play an important role in achieving sustainability targets. This paper discusses the testing and application of on-line ash analysers installed in the Ptolemais and Megalopolis lignite mines in Greece and examines the possibility of using this type of analyser to control blending and homogenisation operations. The effect of the accuracy of on-line analyser to control process, when used for the characterization of low rank coals with complex and variable composition, such as greek lignites, is examined.

THIS investigation of the effect of bottom shape and life on slag volume was carried out in two Lectromelt top-charge furnaces whose rated capacity is 1000 lb per hour. Unfortunately, just as the work [ ] was started, our steel tonnage was reduced approximately one half, therefore we did not accumulate enough data from which to draw any definite conclusions. Furthermore, the life of the linings in these furnaces was greatly decreased by intermittent operation, which was a further handicap in making a study of this kind. The weight of the heats from which the data were taken varied 1200 lb but all the information was corrected to the standard weight charge for these furnaces of 4500 lb. Almost all the heats were plain carbon; a few contained a small percentage of added copper.

An investigation of hazardous surface openings of abandoned and inactive underground mines in the Black Hills area of South Dakota has revealed: (1) tracing legal ownership of mineral claims via county courthouses is confusing, complex, and oftentimes misleading, (2) in general, the selected mine openings in this investigation are to be considered relatively high in risks and hazard potential which poses a threat to the general public, (3) mine closure procedures and designs can generally be categorically implemented depending on the overall situation of the particular mine opening with subsequent unit costs estimates, (4) few preventive state or federal legal measures exist to date concerning mine closures, and (5) liability damages relating to mine opening accidents usually involve expensive and complex common law cases.

THE POSSIBILITY of producing pig iron from iron ores of British Columbia for a west coast primary iron and steel industry has been investigated by the provincial government and by commercial interests on sever.al -occasions. The latest study is that currently under way by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. The Company is studying the possibility of making pig iron from the oxide calcine resulting from the roasting of pyrrhotite. tailings used in making sulphuric acid for fertilizer production at Kimberley. A comprehensive report on the subject .of establishing a primary iron and steel works in the Province, based on local iron ores, was prepared by Arthur G. Mc-Kee and Company of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1942 for the B.C. Minister of Mines and is available to interested parties. A detailed survey on the subject was also pre-pared in 1954 by Dr. G. P. Con-tractor, then .of the British Columbia Research Council. Considerable information is there-fore available on most aspects of an integrated primary iron and steel industry in British Columbia to supply the needs of the western provinces. To date, however, no basic iron industry has been established despite the .occurrence of high-grade iron ore deposits on the offshore islands and the high freight charges on iron and steel products brought into the area from Eastern Canada and overseas producers. The chief deterrent has always been the relatively small and highly diversified market available to a local steel producer. Other major fact-ors have been the lack of sufficient proven reserves of iron ore, and the difficulty of making pig iron, suit-able for steel manufacture, economically on a small scale. Technical and economic conditions have changed considerably since World War II and the establishment of a primary industry based on electric furnace production of pig iron or on one of the direct reduction processes, coupled with electric furnace steel production, may now be economically feasible.
