Two recent unplanned detonations occurred during blasting operations in sulfide-bearing ores in a Nevada gold mine. Other premature detonations have also reportedly occurred at other Nevada, California, and Arizona operations within the past few years, with increasing frequency. Unplanned or premature detonations can be extremely hazardous to life and can cause extensive property damage. A miner was injured in one of these occurrences. This report, by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, is intended to acquaint personnel involved in such mining activities with the basic causes for these accidents. These causes include the exothermic oxidation of pyrite (FeS2) and formation of ferrous sulfate (FeS04), the exothermic and energetic reaction of the ferrous sulfate with ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO)-based explosives, and the associated elevated temperatures that can set off detonators and explosives in the boreholes. Recommendations for safe operation by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the Bureau, and the mine involved with the recent incidents include monitoring temperatures in the blast holes, analyzing for sulfate and ferrous ions, and limiting the time between loading and firing in accordance with conditions in the blast holes. Other procedures for safe operations should fit specific conditions in, the mines.

The formulation and use of mixed collector suites in sulphide flotation can be traced back as far as 1957 with the work of Glembottskii and his co-workers in Moscow. The subject was reviewed by Lotter and Bradshaw in 2010, and proposed a synergy between ideally-selected different reagent types to deliver improved performance, in particular the in situ catalysis of a xanthate to dixanthogen by a dithiocarbamate. Correctly formulated for a particular application, an optimally arranged mixed collector suite delivers the following improvements to the flotation process: • An increase in the flotation kinetics • Improvement in coarse, or middling, particle recovery • Reduction in total dosage requirement • Best results are found from testing the ratios of the collectors. This is of critical importance. In all an optimally formulated mixed collector system usually delivers an increase in paymetals recovery of 1–4% absolute, with a gain in concentrate grade in the range 10–20% relative. In recent years, the addition of semi-conductor theory and associated electrochemistry has contributed significantly to this toolbox by way of identifying optimum domains of Eh and pH for the flotation of individual minerals. In the case of mixtures of minerals, this is where the mixed collector system delivers significant value by way of presenting a mixed set of collector radicals and dimers in a common Eh and pH domain for overall performance. This calls on a fundamental understanding of organic chemistry, mineralogy, semiconductor theory, and electrochemistry. Whereas the selection of grinding media type effectively influences the Eh, the pH can be easily controlled by pH modifiers. The theory of this system, and some industrial case studies, are discussed.

The slip and twinning planes have been determined in deformed crystalsof titanium by an X-ray method of analysis. The slip planes are of the type {1010} and {1011}, while the twinning planes are of the type {1072}, {1121}, and (1122). In the case of the predominant (1010) slip, a type I digonal axis of indices <1120> was the effective slip direction. Microscopic observations on the appearance of the three twin types disclosed a distinct difference in their shapes, and an attempt was made to correlate this difference with the amount of twinning shear. The slip mechanism was discussed on the basis of the difference in c/a ratios for the common hexagonal close-packed metals. IT is a general rule that slip in metals occurs most easily on the planes of greatest atomic density and of the largest interplanar spacing, and that the direction of slip is a close-packed direction. Thus, of the hexagonal close-packed metals which have been investigated by the German school in the decade 1925 to 1935 (cadmium, zinc, and magnesium), it has been found that slip occurs on the basal plane (0001) and in a <1120> direction.&apos; In the case of magnesium above 225oC, slip occurs on a first-order pyramidal plane (1011) as well as on the basal plane.&apos; The hexagonal metals, moreover, deform in part by twinning, and, again with the exception of magnesium at elevated temperatures, the twinning plane has always been reported to be a second-order pyramidal plane {1012).&apos; In view of this consistency in the plastic behavior of these metals, it has been supposed that the same slip and twinning elements would be operative in the other important hexagonal close-packed metals (titanium, zirconium, and beryllium), although there are some reasons why this may not be so. Referring to the tabulation in Table I of the axial ratios of the important metals in this structural class, it may be seen that they can be categorized into three distinct groups depending on the value of their c/a ratios. In the first group are cadmium and zinc with large positive deviations from the ideal ratio for closest packing. This expansion in the direction of the c-axis would be such as to accentuate the basal plane as the slip plane, because it increases the interplanar spacing. The second group includes cobalt and magnesium, which closely approximate the ideal ratio. In the third group are zirconium, titanium, and beryllium whose axial ratios are decidedly less than the ideal. The lattice of the elements in this group is compressed along the c-axis which, in effect, tends to make the basal plane less favorable for slip inasmuch as it reduces the interplanar spacing and the atomic density of this plane. Thus, for metals in the third group, it may be said that there is a certain indefiniteness about the glide plane, in that planes other than the basal plane may be expected to operate. The fact that magnesium begins to exhibit planes other than the normal slip and twinning planes at elevated temperatures may indicate that this behavior will become more pronounced in metals of lower axial ratios. For this reason it might be expected that the slip and twinning behavior of zirconium, titanium, and beryllium would be different from that found in cadmium and zinc. One indication that there is a difference is reflected in the recent work which has been done on the deformation textures of these metals."&apos; As will be shown later, there is a significant difference between the rolling textures of cadmium, zinc, and magnesium on the one hand, and zirconium, titanium, and beryllium on the other, and this difference suggests that the mechanism of plastic flow is not the same in these two groups of metals. From these considerations, therefore, it may be seen that there are good reasons why it cannot be concluded that titanium will have the same crystal-lographic elements of slip and twinning as those exhibited by zinc and cadmium. For the complete determination of these elements it would be most advantageous to have single crystals. A three-phase approach of product conceptualisation, design and delivery has been adopted. To date a substantial amount of laboratory development has taken place with promising results, indicating that the project aims are achievable. The growth of "Unit Load-cargo handling technology in world cargo lin- er trades over the last decade has cre- ated a situation in which special pur- pose-vessels (cellular container ships, roll-on/roll-off vehicle deck ships and Lash type vessels) are rapidly replac- ing conventional cargo ships, the principal means previously available for transporting heavy lifts. Consequently heavy lift traffic has tended to accumulate awaiting ship- ment, especially where discharge is required in "off beat" locations. A partial solution to this problem will be provided by new and small but exceptionally versatile ocean going heavy lift carriers now finding their way into world trade routes. These new ships combine extremely high lifting capacity, high manoeuvreability and exceptionally shallow draft with bow and stern Ro/Ro capability. They can handle rolling loads of exceptional size and weighing up to 1,000 tons Each. But the problem is a far larger and more serious but essentially a domestic one. Major industrial pro- jects in Australia will require pro- gressively heavier and larger plant and construction sites are becoming much more inaccessible. Whereas these new ocean going heavy lift carriers have ample capacity to satisfy part of the total transport requirement, there is clear evidence to show that domestic transport resources have little if any potential for increase in capability at the same rate as demand or at the same rate as sea transport facilities. Resolution of the larger problem is within reach but only through a pro- perly co-ordinated approach to future planning for the overall needs of large scale projects on a national basis. This co-ordinated approach must involve Federal and State government transport administrators, railway and highway authorities, shipping and road haulage interests and finally the planners of the projects which require these improved heavy haulage services.

An exhaustive program of geologic studies and mapping has been conducted by the Geological Survey in the Iron River district of Michigan since May 1943. Means of contributing to the success of these studies were sought by the Bureau of Mines, and eventually a program involving geophysical studies and core-drilling was undertaken in the area. All of the work was done either to develop data that would contribute directly to geologic studies or to investigate geophysical methods that might be used as a primary means for the discovery of minable iron ore.

Large-scale land reclamation has been undertaken in Singapore since the 1960s. In the early years, the fill materials excavated from the hills. In recent years, sea sand is the main source of the fill materials. The contractors used to import the sea sand from the neighbouring countries such as Indonesia. However, in early 2000, the sea sand import from Indonesia and Malaysia was banned. Cambodia, Myanmar, and Philippine therefore became the alternative sources for sea sand. Distance between the jobsite and these countries is over 1,200 km, and transporting sea sand from these areas became a critical issue that could affect the contractor?s performance. Figuring out the right combination of transportation means for a longdistance sand transportation would be challenging because of uncertain situations. We developed a stochastic simulation model, using ARENA, to figure out the right quantity of small-size barges, bulk carriers, and loading/unloading equipment, which could help project managers yield the most production for sand transportation. This paper presents how we developed the simulation model, how it was applied to figure out the optimum combination among various size barges, different bulk carriers, and various types of loading/unloading equipment, for the sand transportation project in Singapore.

THE magnesium-aluminum-zinc system contains most of the magnesium-base alloys used commercially, although in practice the ternary, alloys are usually modified by the addition of a small amount [ ] of manganese. Table I contains the magnesium-base commercial sand-casting alloys most widely used throughout the world, together with their typical tensile properties. These alloys may be regarded as a single family of varying aluminum and zinc content, disregarding manganese. A concise means of presenting data for them is by means of iso-property lines plotted on triangular coordinate paper. Constitutional, casting, and mechanical properties are presented in this manner. The data are given with the object of providing reference material, and to aid in the choice of a commercial alloy to serve a particular purpose. Detailed, critical analysis of the commercial alloys has been covered in a previous paper.1 [ ] All alloys reported were made in 15-lb. melts, superheated to 1700°F. for 15 min., cooled to 1400°F. and poured in sand molds. The test bars produced had a ½ in. reduced section and were about 6 in. long. Except for the data represented in Figs. I and 3 the alloys used were of commercial purity and contained 0.1 to 0.2 per cent Mn in addition to the aluminum and zinc. Grupo Acera, HYLSA originated in 1942 when Hojalata y Lamina began operations to supply steel strip for the Cuauhtémoc Brewery, the parent company. Production began in April, 1943 with growth accelerated because of World War II. By 1948 the company was producing its own steel from electric furnaces charged with scrap iron. Further expansion was hampered by the fluctuations in availability, price and quality of scrap iron. As a result, a search was made for a suitable process to enable HYLSA to satisfy its need for a reliable source of feed for its steel-making facilities. Their relatively low iron requirements at the time did not justify the very high capital investments required using the conventional blast furnace method. Processes which by-passed the blast furnaces were very much in their infancy and were not commercially tested. HYLSA then undertook an investigation of the direct reduction processes, knowing full well that much larger companies in other countries had investigated several processes but their work had not established a trend toward direct reduction or any particular process. However, after much effort and persistence HYLSA arrived at a process which suited their conditions. By using Mexican iron ore and natural gas they developed the now well-known H. y L. Process to produce sponge iron. Concurrent with the start of investigations which led to the H. y L. Process, HYLSA began an exploration program for a suitable source of iron ore. Thus in 1951, Cia. I work for the State of Washington as an Explosives inspector. My paper will describe the mission of the Wa. State Dept. of Labor pertaining to explosives and the regulation of explosives in the State.Blasting safety is high on the public safety list and the regulation of explosive use and storage has been mandated through legislature. The Dept. considers pro-active partnering forexplosive safety preferable to after-the-fact citations for non-compliance.In some cases, the Dept. will issue civil citations with monetary penalties, meant to be a deterrant, of course, to blasters who choose not to comply with the explosive regulations of the State.The Dept. has also revoked and suspended blasting licenses. In some instances, the Dept. has allowed recipients of citations with monetary penalties to reduce the amount paid by attending technical training classes. The idea here, is to reduce the chance of reoccurence of unsafe blasting practices. The State of Washington partners with MSHA in the regulation of explosives use and storage in mines, pits and quarries in the Stateas well as working closely with law enforcement, State and local fire marshals, ATF,and is active in ISEE in part of it’s ongoing effort to promote explosive safety and establish communications in a nonadversarial way with explosives users. My paper will include some statistics on licensing in the State, pounds of explosives used, inspection numbers, numbers and types of complaints with information from the inspections resulting of these complaints. My paper will include examples of storage, both good and bad, examples and pictures of fly rock incidents, accidents, near-miss close calls, break-ins, thefts, and abandoned explosives. This paper may also include a brief summary of my opinion of explosive regulation and my job as a regulator, including examples of high and low points of the job, joys and frustrations.

"The ProblemMany science activities receive substantial funding from governments without much direct economic benefit accruing to state or individuals. In contrast, the search for knowledge has never been an acceptable so le justification of geoscience activity, perhaps because of its utility right from its inception. William Smith&apos;s geological activities were embraced because of their usefulness in building canals. Utility has been expected ever since.For decades it has been accepted at senior level s of government, without much understanding of the process, that geological surveys are necessary as a basis of resource evaluation and utilization. Recently, government treasury board s, staffed with economist s, have questioned these near axioms and in many cases the budget s of geological surveys have reflected their stone y-eyed appraisal s. Are government surveys necessary? Can their functions be reduced? Can some or all of their functions be privatized?Government geologists have been muted in trumpeting their successes outside their own ranks. Companies have been reluctant to give specific public feedback on the work of government surveys that have truly aided or guided them toward discovery. Lack of acknowledged linkages between survey work and discovery has dogged survey managers in budget reviews. Impoverished surveys cannot perform adequately so the circle is completed and the doubters&apos; prophecy fulfilled. This is the genera l problem; British Columbia is the archetypical province."

Lime Cement column stabilization of soft clay and sand in Salt Lake City, Utah and in San Francisco California is described and discussed. Stabilization permitted the construction, in a single stage, of a 14 m MSE wall on "medium" clay in Salt Lake City. It was used to mitigate the potential for liquefaction in San Francisco and to stabilize the Young Bay Mud beneath the BART extension to San Francisco Airport. These applications are described and the field measurements of performance are reported.

Adverse ground behavior events, such as convergence and falls of ground, are some of the most significant challenges and hazards in underground mines. Our goal is to work toward mine-wide, digital, and real-time three-dimensional geotechnical situational awareness and predictive capabilities in complex underground mining operations. This will benefit operators, engineers, and management by enabling them to develop a more proactive approach to ground control. To this end, and inspired by research in the field of remote sensing and autonomous robotics, this paper assesses the potential of mobile light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data acquisition for high-frequency, high-accuracy monitoring tasks in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) deprived underground mines. Limitations of current monitoring practices are reviewed. Relevant academic and commercial developments in the fields of indoor mobile mapping systems (MMSs) and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), robust autonomous robotic platforms, and automated remote sensing data processing are highlighted, and their current shortfalls are evaluated. To conclude, the ramifications of this work for the development of future autonomous underground mine monitoring solutions are discussed.

La base comprende 17 procesos que conforman el SIG según la filosofía del PDCA, los que han sido agrupados como: Política, Planificación, Implementación, Evaluación, Mejora y Revisión de la Alta Dirección. La implementación del SIG que se está realizando en la Fundición de Cobre, asegura la calidad del proceso productivo, estandarizar las mejores prácticas operativas a través de instrucciones de trabajo y procedimientos, motiva y forma a todo el personal de la empresa, cumple con la legislación y mejora la seguridad y salud ocupacional de todo el personal.

The effect of small percentages of sodium chloride on the incendivity of permissible explosives was studied by the Bruceton up-and-down technique in gallery tests. Both the reduction in incendivity achieved by addition of sodium chloride and application of the test method to explosives evaluation are discussed. It is demonstrated that the up-and-down technique in gallery testing is suitable for distinguishing differences in incendivity between different explosive compositions and between lots of the same composition. The study also shows that addition of relatively small quantities of sodium chloride tends to reduce the incendivity of explosives to firedamp, but addition of sodium chloride cannot insure reduced incendivity. Any improvement attributable to the salt can be counteracted by undefined variations in the explosive. The need for experimental investigations of a number of factors that may affect the safety of permissible explosives is emphasized.
