The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) specification B105.1 “Welded Steel Conveyor Pulleys” adequately defines standard pulleys for most aggregate material handling applications. However, many aggregate applications demand pulleys of higher capacity and reliability than that offered by CEMA pulleys. This paper examines the CEMA Pulley Standard and pulley specifications for aggregate applications requiring greater capacity and reliability than the CEMA Pulley Standard. Higher reliability increases the uptime and has a lower total cost of ownership.

Even in an otherwise care-fully done sampling procedure, reducing subsample weight, or splitting, when the grain size of material is too large commonly generates significant error. Such error can be estimated from the standard deviation of differences between values of PAIRED ASSAYS. Samples from split-ting steps immediately before comminution, and showing a restricted range of grade, generate paired assays. Splitting steps characterized by relative standard deviations exceeding 16% generate nonrepresentative data. Such steps should be redesigned to optimize reliability of assay-dependent studies. A sampling scheme can be graphically characterized, and then redesigned as appropriate, using a SAMPLING NOMOGRAPH. Use of the nomograph avoids continued replication of assays. Generally at a splitting step, excessive error can be reduced by comminuting more material. Unnecessary effort can be mitigated by comminuting less finely and/or by splitting to a smaller weight.

Para el desarrollo de dicha labor, el servicio de geología y minería desarrolló un programa de investigación auxiliado con observaciones de áreas de alteración en el sector Sur de la faja de Cobre, entre el valle de Pisco y el valle de Cháparra. Como consecuencia de estos estudios, se detectó 10 áreas anómalas, cuyos rangos varían a fuertemente anómalos, permitiendo definir la existencia de posibles depósitos o áreas mineralizadas.

The Harding pegmatite dike is well known for the production of spodumene and lepidolite in the period 1920 to 1930. It attained greater prominence during the last war by being the largest producer of domestic tantalum ore from the rare mineral microlite. The deposit is believed to be the only proved reserve of tantalum ore in the United States today. In 1943 the main portion of a large tantalum-bearing zone in the Harding dike was developed by the Bureau of Mines with the assistance of the Federal Geological Survey. Analysis of this zone from 39 diamond drill holes and quarry exposures showed a large deposit containing 2 pounds of microlite per ton and 21 percent spodumene, In September 1948, the Bureau of Mines resumed development of the deposit with a view to extending the tantalum-bearing zone farther to the southwest or delimiting the ore body. Seven diamond-drill holes failed to penetrate the ore zone in its southwestward projection, Much of the following general information is summarized from the report on the first exploratory work of the Bureau of Mines by John H. The variables involved in a complex process like flotation can be classified as follows: a. Disturbance variables - which are undesired properties of the process input which affect the value of the process output but which are not subject to adjustment. They are the result of changes in the properties of the feed, like changes in head grade, flow rate, fineness of grind, etc. b. Manipulated variables (sometimes referred to as process variables or control variables) -which are those that are adjusted - reagent addition, aeration, pulp level - in order to compensate for the disturbances in the properties of feed. c. Performance variables (sometimes referred to as controlled variables) -which are those whose values measure the performance of the process. They are properties of the process output such as grade and recovery. The function of a control system is to maintain the process performance equal to the control objective in spite of the disturbances by adjusting the manipulated variables. Attempts at developing automatic control systems for mineral processing operations date back to the thirties and in many of these attempts the results were not surprisingly poor and un-stable. The poor results brought indifference and suspicion towards automatic control on the part of operators and management. The reasons for the apparent failure of these attempts were two-fold: a. the lack of adequate understanding of the behavioural responses of the process from the control point of view, and b. the lack of reliable control instrumentation which could withstand the harsh environment in mineral dressing plants. Many operators had accepted the fact that control of mineral dressing could be best conducted manually. In the case of flotation circuits, control had been virtually based on the skill and experience of operators particularly their ability to identify and rectify poor flotation performance aided by results from the laboratory (chemical) analysis of regularly collected samples from strategic points in the circuit which are at best, hourly collected samples.

"The United States hat large reserves of titaniferous iron ores that are a potential future source of both iron and titanium. Although it is not now economically feasible to recover iron and titanium metals from these ores, they may become important in times of stress and, in some instances, already have served as a source of pigment-quality titania.The iron- and titanium-bearing constituents of the ores considered in this report are not completely separable from each other by ore-dressing methods, and chemical (or smelting) procedures must be employed. It is im¬portant, therefore, that information be available concerting their reactivities. The most important titanium-bearing constituent is ilmenite (FeTiO3), the thermodynamic properties of which were discussed in a previous publication.3/ The results of thermodynamic studies showed that both hydrogen and carbon monoxide are relatively ineffective reducing agents for the iron in limonite. On the other hand, carbon theoretically is effective at tempera¬tures above 8510C., at which. point the combined equilibrium pressures of CO and CO2 from the reactionsFeTiO3 + C = Fe+ TiO + COand200 = C+ CO2reach 1 atmosphere.This report gives results of small-scale tests of selective reduction by carbon of the iron in titaniferous iron ores, both with and without addition of sodium carbonate. It is shown that the bulk of the iron may be reduced and separated without serious reduction or loss of titanium. Three Wyoming ores, Iron Mountain, Shanton, and Taylor, wore studied. The principal factors investigated were temperature, time, carbon:ore ratio, particle size, and sodium carbon ore ratio.Two methods of investigation were employed. In the first, intimate mixtures of ore and carbon were roasted and the reduced iron and titanium evaluated by leaching with dilute sulfuric acid and analyzing the leach solution (and, in some instances, the dried residues).Twenty grams of ore were mixed thoroughly with carbon and tamped into an alundum thimble having a loosely fitting cover. The thimble and contents were placed in a test-tube end porcelain tube and heated to the desired temperature in a Globar tube furnace. The open end of the porcelain tube was connected to a bubbler containing sulfuric acid, in a manner that permitted complete shut-off of the tube when desired. This allowed removal of the tube from the furnace at the end of the roast period without exposure of the contents to the atmosphere."

Green policies have gained momentum since the 1972 Stockholm Environment Conference. The environmental movement has influenced political initiatives both in New Zealand and abroad. Governments and international institutions have addressed local, regional and global environmental issues with varying degrees of success. New Zealand so far has not supported the United Nations' call for sustainable development in a,consistent manner.New institutions and new rules for resource management mean there are opportunities to look after the land in different and more ecologically sensitive ways than has happened in the past.The increasing influence of regional councils in resource management planning will have important implications for mining and mineral exploration. These trends are discussed and possible future events outlined.

The blasting work to construct a subway in Seoul, Korea have often caused increased neighbor’s complaints because of ground vibration. In order to prevent the damage to the structure, it was necessary to predict the level of blasting induced vibration and to determine the maximum charge weight per delay within an allowable vibration level. The effect of blasting pattern, rock strength and different explosives on the blast-induced ground vibration was studied to determine the maximum charge weight per delay within a given vibration level. The blasting vibration was measured from 10 sites along the subway line in Seoul and an empirical particle velocity equation from over 100 test data was obtained, V=K(D/W1’3 )-” , where the values for n and K are estimated to be 1.7 to 1 S and 48 to 138 respectively.

Sodium pyroantimonate which is widely used as the clarifier in the glass industry and as the synergist in anti-flaming industry respectively has a production history of about 30 years in China. At present there is the production capacity of about 20,000 tons per year in China and China is chief producer of sodium pyroantimonate. In this work the production processes adopted by the producers of China, the operation conditions and the product qualities of sodium pyroantimonate prepared by different preparation methods have been summarized, and on the basis of comparing the advantages and disadvantages for each process the most advanced method - the air-oxidation method was introduced in detail. The production processes of sodium pyroantimonate mainly include the method of oxidation by sodium nitrate, the oxidation method of hydrogen peroxide, the potash salt method, the chlorination method and the air-oxidation method etc. The method of oxidation by sodium nitrate in which the crude antimony oxide, sodium carbonate and sodium nitrate are separately used as the raw material, the flux agent and the oxidant, has the advantage of short and simple technological process, but low grade quality of sodium pyroantimonate and bringing about serious environmental pollution are the disadvantages and this method has been substituted by other methods. Sodium pyroantimonate can be directly prepared by the hydrogen peroxide oxidation method with the advantages of simple technological process, high grade quality of the product and little environmental pollution. High grade quality of sodium pyroantimonate can be also synthesized by the potash salt method, in which industrial antimony white, the hydrogen peroxide, potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide are applied as the starting material. The disadvantages of these two preparation methods are high production cost and high requirements on the raw materials. The chlorination method with the crude antimony oxide, hydrochloric acid and chlorine as the raw material has the advantages of low production cost and high grade quality of the product. However complex process, high requirement of anti-corrosion for the equipments and producing plenty of waste water limit its application. The air-oxidation method with stibnite/jamesonite concentrate, sodium sulfide, and sodium hydroxide as the raw material and atmosphere as the oxidant is a newly developed method and its advantages are low production cost and the complex raw material can be treated by this method and its disadvantage is that the quality of sodium pyroantimonate is lower than that prepared by the oxidation method of hydrogen peroxide and the potash salt method.

Much of the technology and methodology extensively employed in current mining operations is in the mature phase of its lifecycle and, consequently, subject to the principle of diminishing returns. It is probable that future gains in productivity and safety of the magnitude essential for the sustained economic viability of the industry will be derived only from a determined technological development programme. The history of trackless mechanized mining, which represented a radical change in methodology in deep-level gold mines, is reviewed. The benefits and obstacles to the realization of the full potential are highlighted. Similarly, an overview is given of alternative mechanization developments in South Africa. In addition to the development and application of advanced technology, an envelope of operating parameters relevant to each methodology must be engineered to facilitate the site-specific selection of the most appropriate. Furthermore, a mechanism for the evaluation of cost effectiveness is essential to the decision-making process. The narrow, tabular orebodies of relatively low dip that are encountered in the South African hard-rock mining industry make the design and manufacture of a comprehensive range of stoping equipment extremely difficult. The machinery that has been available to date has demonstrated only limited site-specific success. The development of suitable machinery must necessarily be initiated and driven by the South African mining industry in collaboration with the major equipment manufacturers in the world.

"The amenability theory was developed by Alex Naudts and considers grouting operations as continuous permeability tests where Newtonian test fluid water, is replaced by a cementitious or solution grout. It utilizes hydraulic conductivity and grouting data to establish the amenability coefficient of a particular grout zone. The amenability coefficient reflects the quantity of apertures or voids accessible to the selected grout, divided by the number of apertures accessible to water, in the zone intersected by the grout hole. By calculating, in real time, the effectiveness of a particular grout at the start of a grouting operation, the most appropriate grout to match design criteria can be targeted. By incorporating the amenability theory in every grouting operation, schedule savings and an increase in productivity are typically achieved. Three short case studies illustrate different enhancements in productivity: At an underground mine during the construction of declines, a cement based suspension grouting program was highly ineffective and did not appear to affect the inflow into the mine workings. The amenability theory was utilized to evaluate the grouting program and based on this evaluation, changes to the grouting program were made which allowed the grouting to meet the project’s objectives. On another project, a pre-excavation grouting program implemented during shaft sinking operations utilized the amenability theory to select the most suitable grout for the program. Schedule constraints also influenced the selection of the grout. In the third case history presented, the amenability theory was used to select the grouting sequence of every individual grout hole for a grouting project in a highly heterogeneous soil formation. INTRODUCTION The amenability of a given soil, civil structure or rock formation for a particular grout formulation is a measure of the ability of that grout to permeate the pores, fissures and apertures water will flow through. The amenability coefficient of a particular grout for a specific zone equals the percentage of apertures, pores and fissures accessible by water that are also accessible by grout. Grouting should be viewed as a continuous permeability test, where the apparent in-situ hydraulic conductivity value for a particular grout zone is continuously evaluated, using grout instead of water as test fluid."

A drill system configuration capable of working in the arctic offshore environment was developed to evaluate the placer gold resources contained in the glacio-fluvial sediments offshore Nome, Alaska. This system is capable of working on the shore fast ice during the winter months and is deployed on a drill ship during the summer. Transfer of the drill between its summer and winter configurations is accomplished with a minimum of modification to the design. The system is designed around the Becker drill. This percussive, reverse circulation drill is capable of penetrating the indurated glacial sediments present in the offshore Nome environment. This drill has operated effectively to depths in excess of 50 m (164 ft) below sea level. Since early 1987, in excess of 2000 holes have been drilled using the system. The drill system often operates in extreme weather conditions. It has averaged approximately 10 holes a day of drill production. The ore reserves defined during these drilling programs have resulted in the recovery of more than 70,000 oz (2.18 t) of gold to date, by the mining vessel Bima.

This paper gives an account of the development of a plant for the differential flotation of mixed sulphide ore, special reference being made to the separation of copper and zinc sulphides. The uniqueness of the geology, mineralogy, and metallurgy of each complex ore-body is stressed. Consideration is given to the scale-up of laboratory data, and to some of the factors involved in the design of milling and flotation plants for this type of ore. Process control and development are discussed, as are the human requirements for the optimum operation of a concentrator.

To assist coal mine operators and regulatory agencies in selecting the most appropriate method to treat coal mine drainage utilizing expert system computer technology. The software package is called the Coal Mine Drainage Treatment PRO. Approach Experts in the field of coal mine drainage treatment were interviewed to determine their methods of assessing mine drainage treatment problems and their rationale for selecting a treatment protocol. These diagnostic, selection, and design criteria were codified in an interactive set of computer programs. Expert systems permit the user to input specific site data and receive treatment advice customized to the user's site and treatment objectives. How It Works The Coal Mine Drainage Treatment PRO package developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) consists of four programs or modules: (1) a control module, (2) a mine drainage treatment tutorial module, (3) a treatment advice module, and (4) a reference module (figure 1). A context-sensitive HELP Facility is also provided.

Surface subsidence resulting from "total extraction" of coal in the Collie Basin first occured in 1987 when Western Collieries Ltd trialled the Wongawilli mining method. Because very little quantitative subsidence data existed for the weak, Permian sediments, a research program was set up prior to the extraction of the first panel. The objective of the study was to be able to predict subsidence characteristics and effects prior to mining future total extraction panels. Attempts at predicting subsidence began using existing subsidence models from other coal mining regions, however, as more site information became available, it became clear that it was necessary to develop a separate, she specific predictive model for the Collie Coal Basin. Analysis of extensive field monitoring data for both surface and subsurface subsidence has produced a series of empirical models which can predict the shape of surface subsidence troughs and corresponding tilts, and strains for rectangular panels and describe the sequences of ground movement from the mine roof through to the ground surface.

A significant technological development is discussed for the processing of certain power plant flyashes that are a problem because they contain a high water-soluble mineral content and yield inferior flyash-based brick. This development is based on the addition of hydrochloric acid to the flyash-bottom ash-sodium silicate blends used for the production of flyash-based structures. Favorable changes are evi-dent in sodium silicate consumption, where about half the amount used for making brick from normal flyash is required, processing costs, and strength and appearance of the resulting freshly formed green and fired structural products. In some high cost in-stances (above the $30 or less per thousand brick estimated for normal flyash), hydrochloric acid additions can replace or reduce other costly additives normally required for problem flyashes. This results in savings of as much as $9 per thousand brick. These developments offer promising possibilities for utilizing problem flyashes as well as flyashes which may come into contact with water soluble sulfur as a result of the eventual application of certain experimental air pollution control processes. Much of the research datal-6 accrued through work by the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University for the Department of Interior's Office of Coal Research on converting waste power coal ash to valuable brick and other structural products, can be categorized as follows: (1) general ash-to-brick tech- nology; (2) specific ash-to-brick optimization; (3) pilot plant progress; (4) production cost estimates. A summary of the progress on bench-scale experiments indicates that coal ash can yield two types of brick. An acceptable brick is obtained by mixing 73.6% fly-ash, 23.5% bottom ash and 2.9% sodium silicate solution (dry basis). Depending on the flyash and bottom ash used, optimum brick can be manufactured by mixing 72-77% flyash, 20-25% bottom ash and 2.3-3.0% sodium silicate (dry basis) with Na2O : SiO2 ratio varied according to the composition of the flyash used. These blends are thoroughly mixed and mechanically formed into green brick shapes at pressures ranging from 1000 to the more usual 3000 lb per sq in. The green shapes then are dried and fired at temperatures ranging from 1975-2150°F using clay brick cycles that are shorter than standard. Other findings reported to date indicate that when making optimum brick, it is necessary to carefully control the top size of the moisture-releasing bottom ash so that it falls between 8 and 30 mesh, depending on the flyash used. Moreover, the chemical composition of bottom ash and flyash have been found to be of little significance with the exception of a few problem flyashes which are the subject of this paper. Finally, the pilot plant, which was previously reported under construction, is now in operation. This will indicate, among other things, the cost of brick production, which was earlier estimated for non-problem flyashes at $30 or less per thousand brick. The foregoing bench-scale technology is applicable to all the initially tested ashes as well as to the majority of ashes examined during the course of research. However, a few of the ashes yield green and fired products that may be structurally inferior or unacceptable, necessitating excessive and diverse reagent addition, and/or may be coated with unsightly surface deposits. The partial molar heats of solution in liquid tin of cadmium, silver, tellurium, and zinc have been measured at 655°. 700°, and 750°K by liquid-metal solution calorimetry. Silver, cadmium, and zinc are endothermic at these temperatures while tellurium is exothermic. Only the heat of solution of silver depends on composition while all four elements show a temperature-de pendent heat of solution. The heat of solution of tellurium is constant up to 0.6 g-at. pct, becomes increasingly more exothermic, and reaches a limiting value at 1 g-at. pct Te. The limiting value has been used to calculate the heat of formation of SnTe at 750°K. The heat effects associated with the dissolution of the compounds Ag2 Te, CdTe, and ZnTe in liquid tin were measured at 750°K. These values are cotnOined with the measured hat effects at 750°Kfor silver, cadmium, tellurium, and zinc to detertrline the heats of formation of the telluride compounds. Cadmium lelluride exhibits a heat of dissolution which has a compositional dependence. THERE is a considerable amount of interest in the compounds of tellurium because of their electronic properties. Both cadmium and zinc tellurides are thermoelectric materials and considerable work has been done on their electronic properties but a limited amount of data is available on their ther-modynamic properties. This work was undertaken to elucidate the heat of formation data on cadmium and zinc telluride. Since both cadmium and zinc are in Group II it seemed to be of interest to compare the values obtained for them with the heat of formation of a Group I telluride. Silver telluride was selected for this comparison. In the course of the work it was also possible to determine the heat of formation of tin telluride and therefore to make a comparison of some of the Group I, 11, and lV tellurides with the metallic elements silver, cadmium, and tin being in the same period. There is also a great deal of interest in the energetic changes which occur upon addition of solute elements to a common solvent. This investigation provided an opportunity to study the partial molar heats of solution of silver, cadmium, tellurium, and zinc in liquid tin. The partial molar heats of solution are of theoretical interest because solute-solute interactions are a minimum in dilute solutions and application of solution models is simpli- fied. In order to complete the analysis of solute-solute and solute-solvent interactions the temperature dependence of the partial molar heats of solution was also measured. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE All materials were of the highest purity available. The silver, zinc, cadmium, and tellurium were obtained from American Smelting and Refining Co. and were reported to be 99.999 pct pure. The silver telluride, zinc telluride, and cadmium telluride were obtained from Atomergic Chemetals Co., a division of Gallard-Schlesinger Chemical Manufacturing Corp., and were electronic-grade material of 99.999 pct purity. Tin used for the solvent bath and for calibration was obtained from the Vulcan Manufacturing Co. and was reported as being 99.99 pct pure. The liquid-tin solution calorimeter used in this work is similar in principle to the differential twin-type calorimeter described by K1eppa.l Two of three identical calorimeter wells are used together during any set of experiments, one well being active and the other being passive. The wells are positioned 120 deg apart in an aluminum calorimeter block. Each well contains a multijunction thermopile and a Pyrex test tube to hold the liquid metal bath. Forty-eight of the thermopile junctions are distributed over the surface of each calorimeter well adjacent to the test tube and serve to integrate the heat effects occurring. The other forty-eight are next to the aluminum calorimeter block. The thermopiles for the three wells are connected differentially so that any change in temperature at the outer junctions (which will be the same for both wells because of the high conductivity of the aluminum block) will oppose for the two wells and result in no shift of the zero. The electrical output represents the true temperature difference between the two reaction vessels. A reaction occurring in the active well gives a comparison with another body of very similar thermal properties. In this way, any spurious heat effects due to slight temperature drifts within the entire calorimeter block are eliminated. The output of the differential thermopile goes to a dc amplifier with multiple ranges of from * 10 pv to 1 30 mv. The output of the amplifier is then fed into a Leeds and Northrup strip-chart recorder. The adiabatic temperature change is then calculated using the technique of Howlett, Leach, Ticknor, and ever.' CONSIDERING that a typical modern drilling machine strikes approximately 2000 blows per min and may develop a force of 30 to 200 ft-lb, de- pending upon size of the drill used, the importance of uniform stress distribution in this type of drilling becomes obvious. If the rod were perfectly symmetrical, and if it did not rotate, the problem would be relatively simple, however, the necessary forging, machining and heat treating operations prevent attaining this state of perfection. Take the modern hollow drill rod. The blow is transmitted not from the striking end of the rod directly through to the point of impact of the bit in the rock, but rather through a somewhat complex tool. To add further problems, this entire assembly is rotated immediately after the impacting blow. Rather than attempt to discuss the magnitude and distribution of stresses, it is desired to present a few things that will minimize unusual stress concentration and produce a rod in which the stress distribution will approach the theoretical ideal.
