The development and scale up of hydrothermal synthesis processes for manufacture of high performance materials is discussed. Traditional hydrometallurgical processes are reviewed, leading into a discussion of process development concerns for manufacture of modern materials. Three case studies are presented, including a piezoelectric ceramic, barium titanate for multiyear capacitors, and high purity chromium metal. Factors for selection of reactor design are presented, as well as results of scale-up studies on the three products.

This study presents an analysis of annular backpressure variations associated with controlled gas kicks and their pronounced effect on casing .strings and exposed under lying formations. A mathematical model describing the volumetric behavior of an extraneous gas as it is transported from reservoir to .surface conditions under changing temperatures and pressures has been programmed in a Kingston FORTRAN II language for digital computer analysis. The gases under investigation typify Gulf Coast reservoir gases within a 0.6 to 0.7 .specific gravity range. The program output has been substantiated by actual field cases. of gas kicks encountered in Gulf Coart we1l.s. The development of empirical equations for calculating suitable gamy deviation factors for unique temperatures and pressures was incorporated in the program to provide realistic solution.. An output listing of annular backpressures and corresponding equivalent fluid densities resulting at a predetermined critical depth (casing setting depth) and total depth for selected .stages of circulation is provided in a chronological .sequence. Additional information including reservoir pressure and temperature, kill rnrid density, produced gas or surface volume of the expanded gas intro vion, drill pipe and annular volumes can he obtained from the model. This paper illustrates that a precise knowledge of the volumetric behavior of extraneous gases in annular flow and its effect on equivalent fluid densities at a critical depth is significant and should receive .serious consideration in controlling threatened blowouts and in the design of drilling programs. Surface pressures in excess of formation limitations are a threat to zones of lost circula/ion and are potentially injurious to productive intervals. A knowledge of annular backpressure and equivalent fluid density profiles for probable gas kicks aids in a technological accomplishment of drilling programs and provides a .sale tolerance in the event a threatened blowout is encountered. The differential pressures resulting permit an extraneous influx of gas into the wellbore. A suspension in drilling progress is necessary to restore fluid equilibrium throughout the system. Whether formation gas kicks originate unintentionally or by design, the prospect of a threatened or actual blowout exists and a method assuring a safe and effective well control procedure must be observed. A significant contribution to well control technology was advanced by Records et a1.l in 1962. Using the concept of transmitting a constant equivalent formation pressure at the point of intrusion, Records et al. introduced a calculation technique providing the annular backpressures encountered in a well control environment as a func tion of the volumetric behavior of a 0.6 specific gravity natural gas. In essence, the procedure outlined an annular backpressure schedule in terms of fluid volume circulated at different stages of a well control operation. A number of other publications2-' proposing various techniques for controlling gas intrusions in a wellbore achieve pressure control essentially through maintenance of a constant bottom-hole pressure by surface choke adjustments. The subsequent pressure effects induced in the annulus unfortunately receive little emphasis. Due to the tedious and repetitive nature of annular backpressure computations, a theoretical solution by digital computer is introduced for predicting annular backpressure and equivalent fluid density profiles associated with controlled gas kicks. We point out the effects of volumetric behavior of extraneous gases in annular flow and related field phenomena on equivalent fluid densities at a critical depth. The investigation indicated that equivalent fluid densities at a critical depth are of significance and should receive consideration in the control of threatened blowouts and in the design of drilling programs. Theoretical Considerations The mechanism of vertical gas flow through an annulus is governed by the PVT properties of the fluid, the pressure distribution within the system, the fluid flow rates and the geometry of flow. Due to the numerous variables involved in this type of problem, certain assumptions were imposed in deriving the mathematical model and in establishing the solutions. The formation of gas hydrates in natural-gas pipe lines depends on temperature and pressure conditions in the lines as well as on the presence of condensed water. The operating pressure in a pipe line may be determined easily and usually is available from the records of operation, but the temperature seldom is known. In cooperation with the American Gas Association, the Bureau of Mines, in its investigation of gas hydrates, conducted a pipe-line-temperature survey and studied underground temperatures at depths at which pipe lines ordinarily are buried and the relationship of these temperatures to prevailing atmospheric conditions. A similar but mere limited study of this type was conducted by engineers of the Bureau of Mines a number of yours ago.4/ A summary of the earlier findings was included in a general report by the Bureau on the flew of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines.5/ In the present study, data on temperature variations were obtained at several places widely separated geographically. This information should assist pipe-line engineers in designing and operating natural-gas pipe lines.

The tin deposit of Monserrat, Bolivia, consists of one major vein 1600 m in length. The ore is unusual because of the notable quantity of teallite, even though cassiterite is the principal tin mineral. The deposit, formed at shallow depth under a wide range in temperature, may be classed as xenothermal. Polished sections reveal a complex history of replacement, with low-temperature minerals deposited before high-temperature minerals.

In the manufacture of steel by any process the refining period involves the partial elimination of the metalloids carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and silicon, by virtue of their reactions with ferrous oxide. At the end of this refining stage the metal consists chiefly of iron in which small amounts of these materials are dissolved. Unless some deoxidizer is added to the steel at this time, the reaction between carbon and ferrous oxide will continue with such force that it is impossible to form sound steal in the ingot molds. Instead, the product will exhibit a marked porosity due to the formation and trapping of carbon monoxide-the product of the reaction mentioned. However, if deoxidizers are added, steel may be obtained which is dense and free from gas bubbles. At the same time the deoxidation products will remain in the steal as impurities. For example, silicon additions form Si02 or combinations of Si02 and FeO. Additions of manganese form deoxidation products consisting of various proportions of MnO and FeO. It is also quite obvious that simultaneous additions of manganese and silicon will form oxide combinations either in the binary system MnO-SiO2 or in the ternary system FeO-MnO-SiO2. Work at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Metallurgical Advisory Board, involved the study of such deoxidizing reactions and their products. In this connection considerable information is necessary concerning FeO, MeO, Si02, and Al 203, and their various combinations. Some of the most needed data are the melting points of all of these materials. At the outset of this work ordinary methods of melting point determinations were found to be inadequate for various reasons, and the procedure finally selected involved the use of the micropyrometer with occasional corroboration by quenching methods, The reasons for this selection, together with a description of the apparatus, are given in the following pages.

It is imperative that the hydrogeologic frame- work and the ground water flow systems of a Potential mine area be investigated prior to initiation of mining. Such investigations are necessary so that potential mine water inflow problems can be anticipated and controlled. Obvious difficulties can arise if large inflows of ground water occur in underground workings. Costs of water removal and disposal, if not foreseen and included in economic planning, can severely limit or eliminate profit from a mining operation. Safety problems associated with large inflows are an additional potential problem. The inflow of water into a mine necessarily alters the associated ground water system. The inflow also may impact nearby surface water regimes, depending upon the interaction of the surface water and ground water systems. The inflow of water into a mine inevitably causes a decline in the ground water levels in the vicinity of the mine. This decline may be restricted to a small area or it may extend a considerable distance, depending upon the hydrogeologic properties of the associated hydrostratigraphic units. A decrease in surface flow will result if the area of ground water level decline intersects a stream or spring that is hydraulically connected to the ground water system. Mine inflow problems historically have been evaluated after-the-fact. Premining hydrologic investigations only recently have been initiated. Brown's (1977)* report on anticipated hydrologic impacts of oil shale mining in the Piceance Basin of Colorado is an example of premining hydrologic planning. Observed difficulties inherent in designing a data collection network and then utilizing the data to predict mine inflow have led us to the preparation of this manuscript. This manuscript reflects a two-phase effort. The first phase describes and develops analytical and numerical techniques for mine inflow prediction. Emphasis in this section is placed on the selection and application of data collection techniques and data analysis procedures. The second phase applies the prediction technique(s) developed during phase 1 to two existing mines. The objective of phase 1 efforts is to evaluate the hydrologic variables associated with surface water systems and ground water systems that can affect the inflow of water into an underground mine. Subsequently these variables are incorporated into predictive techniques for estimating underground mine water inflow and its effect on associated ground water and surface water systems. The specific objectives of phases 1 and 2 are to: 1) Determine the hydrologic parameters required for predicting underground mine water in- flow and the potential effects of the inflow on surface and ground water systems. The hydrologic parameters represent both premining and past initiation conditions. 2) Outline methods for obtaining the necessary input data for the predictive techniques in pre- mining and post initiation periods. 3) Present existing numerical techniques for predicting underground mine water inflow including assumptions Ad required input. 4) Evaluate existing numerical techniques previously tabulated based on their applicability to mine water inflow prediction. 5) Attempt to develop analytical techniques for predicting underground mine water inflow. 6) Develop, through modification of existing models, a general mathematical model as a numerical technique for predicting underground mine water inflow and the resultant effects on surface and ground water systems. 7) Apply the predictive techniques to two existing mines selected for this purpose. 8) Compare the predicted inflow rates to measured inflow rates at both mines. 9) Compare predicted impact on district hydrology to observed impacts where possible. 10) Evaluate the predictive technique.

This paper will present the results of an analysis of several abandoned coal mine projects and includes field data for over a dozen different reclamation projects recently completed in the state of West Virginia. The analysis was performed with the objective of summarizing and or classification of the environmental consequences with reference to the characteristics of the mining facilities (surface, underground, etc.). The analysis also addressed the itemized cost of remediation with respect to procedures, environmental concerns and time. The results of the analysis are that each abandoned coal mine site in West Virginia have/had many unique features and in most cases include a combination of environmental concerns that complicate comparisons. The study also revealed that the abandoned mine land program for mines abandoned prior to 1977, that is being financed by a tax on the production of coal, has produced many benefits for the state of West Virginia. This grant program administered by the Office of Surface Mining, has resulted in a high quality methodology of remediation that has been successful for many years in greatly minimizing and/or eliminating environmental concerns from abandoned coal mines.

Detonation propagates in the subject blasting agent at about 2.7 km/sec when it is heavily primed but explosion propagates in it at only about 0.43 km/sec when it is lightly primed. When propagating at 0.43 km/sec, it produces a borehole pressure that is slightly less than 1 kb, but no yellow fumes or other sign of incomplete reaction. It is a pumped AN/emulsion blend to which additional water is added by circumferential injection at the inlet of the hose through which it is pumped.

The mineral resource potential of the Los Bronces deposit was successfully evaluated by an intense, coordinated program over a 37-month period (April 1978-May 1981) as part of an economic feasibility study. The program included more than 120 km of core drilling, 63 km of access road construction under adverse topographic and climatic conditions, detailed geological mapping, plus other related activities. This Tertiary-age copper-molybdenum deposit is composed of an earlier mineralized porphyry-type body intruded in part by a large complex of mineralized hydrothermal breccia pipes. Both intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks are present. Erosion, oxidation, leaching, and supergene enrichment of copper have resulted in a deposit now exposed at the surface that contains more than 368 Mt grading about 1% copper equivalent as sulfides.

The per capita energy consumption in India is 510kgoe/year, the global average being nearly 1818kgoe/year. Correspondingly low is the per capita CO2 emission at 1.25t against the world average of 4.39t.65-70%, at times more, of India?s power generation from about 190,000 MW installed capacity, is however coal fired.India therefore has to secure diversified sources of energy and solar power is increasingly being looked as the real alternative to the existing over dependence on coal. To ensure sustainable solar power it is essential to secure its raw material base that is ?silica?, hitherto considered as ?minor minerals?. That calls for immediately addressing the issues of land availability, solar power cost, developing a dynamic inventory of silica containing minerals, appropriate processing technology and strong regulatory framework for sustainable mining and processing of all silica rich minerals. THE studies of the mechanism of precipitation and of the resulting property changes in aluminum-silver alloys1-3 have presented some new concepts of the aging reaction-concepts that may be fundamental in establishing a complete quantitative theory of age-hardening. With both aluminum-copper and aluminum-silver alloys, thin platelike aggregates form parallel to the Widmanstätten planes of precipitation.1,4 These platelets grow in lateral dimensions and in thickness with aging time until they are thick enough to produce an X-ray diffraction line pattern. Their structure is that of a transition lattice which is coherent with the matrix, since the atomic spacings in the matrix and the precipitate are the same on each side of their common interface.2,4 The equilibrium precipitate forms later from and at the expense of the transition lattice. Since age-hardening occurs during the formation and growth of the transition lattice, the major contributor to the hardening no doubt is the stress condition in the matrix resulting from the matrix holding the precipitate in the coherent condition. The development of these stresses also appears to be responsible for an increase in the electrical resistance superimposed on the normal decrease resulting from a change in the concentration of the matrix during aging.3 The two consecutive reactions constituting the aging process are accompanied by characteristic microstructural alterations. The initial precipitation process results in the formation of a Widmanstätten figure, while the later transformation of the transition lattice to the equilibrium lattice is accompanied by a coalescence, in the case of aluminum-copper alloys,5 and by the appearance of light areas at the grain boundaries with aluminum-silver alloys showing a structural rearrangement of matrix and precipitate.3 This latter reaction is similar microscopically to the so-called "discontinuous precipitation." Possibly discontinuous precipitation is a process that often if not always follows true precipitation of a coherent lattice and during which the transformation of the coherent transition lattice to the equilibrium lattice takes place accompanied by matrix recrystallization.3 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were made using 99.97 per cent Al or distilled magnesium, with

The silicon anisotropic wet chemical etching technique is widely employed for fabricating various microelectromechanical system (MEMS) structures for advantages such as simple etching equipment and its capability to fabricate special microstructures. In this paper, we consider a complete theoretical derivation of the analytical solution based on geometrical and kinetic aspects of step flow on any surface and with a mathematical method we derive new equation for calculating the microscopic etch rates of surface atoms for a new range of concentrations and temperatures. Furthermore, a novel equation is presented for the calculation of the microscopic activation energies for some typical surface atoms and a new comparison of activation energies between some atoms is made that divides atoms into three categories. The results demonstrate agreement with the experimental results.

Kalgoorlie is the main mining centre of the Western Australian Goldfields. Its famous Golden Mile' has been noted for the exceptional width and richness of its goldtelluride lodes. Since the mid-1890s production on the major mines has been maintained practically continuously.Rich ore, though not as plentiful or as rich as formerly, is still (1948) being mined in places. Unexplored areas still remain within the main auriferous belt which offer reasonable chances of success with intensive exploration.Much detailed information has accumulated in recent years through the geological mapping of underground workings by some of the larger mining companies. The purpose of this paper is to correlate observations made in most of the accessible old and recent workings in the mines of the Lake View and Star group and elsewhere.GENERAL GEOLOGYRock TypesThe rock formations are:-1. Fine-grained (older) greenstones, locally referred to as calc schists. There were originally pillow lavas and other flow rocks of basic composition, now extensively chloritised and/or carbonated. Pillows and fragmental flow- tops are recognisable. Intercalated with flows near the top of the series are several beds of sediments.2. Graphitic slates and other more arenaceous sediments.Although referred to as slates, they are rarely more than well-bedded shales with poorly developed fracture cleavage:Thick bands of felsitic rock are found in places.

A study of the structures arising from the decomposition of the ß solid solutions in the Cu-Zn and the Cu-A1 systems is of peculiar interest in the study of the mechanism of precipitation from solid solutions. It is possible in these alloys, by varying the composition within the ß field, to precipitate from the same basic lattice phases having different lattice structures. It has been rather generally assumed heretofore that the type of structure originating from the decomposition of a solid solution— the Widmanstätten structure—-is determined by the lattice structure of the parent solid solution alone. In the first paper of this series1 evidence was advanced which threw doubt upon this hypothesis; but definite proof of the correctness or incorrectness of the hypothesis should be forthcoming from a study of these alloys, for if the structures originating, for example, from the precipitation of the a phase from ß and of the ? phase from the ß in the Cu-Zn system should be shown to be crystallographically different, the hypothesis would necessarily be held as definitely disproved. Furthermore, the newer proposal enunciated in the first paper of this series—that the origin of the Widmanstätten structure lies in a cooperation between the lattice of the parent solid solution and that of the precipitate-—which at present seems the only a1ternative hypothesis, would in such an event be given added weight. The work here reported shows that the Widmanstätten structures originating in the precipitation of the a phase from the ß and in the precipit'at.ion of the y phase from the y in the Cu-Zn system are indeed crystallographically different; and incidentally presents some new descriptive information on the Widmanstätten structure from a more general point, of view.

En base al mapeo detallado de rocas intrusivas, estudio petrográfico, geoquímica de rocas e isotopos U/Pb, se logró determinar hasta doce nuevas unidades intrusivas, distribuidas en un tiempo geológico continuo desde el Jurásico medio (168 Ma) al Cretácico superior (92 Ma). Se evidenciaron además nuevas estructuras relacionadas a mineralizaciones de yacimientos tipo pórfido, IOCG (Iron Oxide Copper Gold), vetas mesotermales auríferas y cupríferas.

I have thought it well to lay before the Institute some account of the Vallecillo Mines, now, I believe, the only paying ones in American hands in northeastern Mexico, including the States of Nuevo Leon, Coahuila and Tamaulipas. The authentic history of these mines dates from their ownership by an American Company in the year 1851, when they were bought by the Vallecillo Silver Mining Company of New York. They had been worked before by the Spaniards, but had been abandoned for many years, on account of the heavy expense of drainage and the constant incursions of the Indians. The company commenced work with several well-known New York capitalists among its stockholders, and had a large fund of both money and enthusiasm. The first point of attack was at a shaft on a mine known as the Jesus Maria, which had the most favorable traditions. Extensive buildings were put up, and two sets of pumps were successively tried. After the second pump, with a steam-cylinder 5 feet in diameter and 10 feet stroke and a plunger 20 inches in diameter, had failed to do more than hold the water, with infinite labor, at the 250 feet level, and after a thorough exploitation of the whole mine above that level had failed to yield more than some $30,000 worth of ore, it was resolved to abandon the effort. The heats of formation of two lead vanadates (Pb2V207 and Pb3V208) and manganese vanadate (MnV206) were determined by hydrochloric acid solution calorimetry, supplementing previous Bureau of Mines measurements of the vanadates of calcium, magnesium} and sodium. Heat and free energy data for 11 vanadates were assembled on a common basis. The stability of comparable vanadates (with respect to the oxides) increases in the following order: Magnesium, manganese, lead, calcium, sodium.

"The production of heavy water, the moderator in a CANDU reactor, is examined following a flow sheet of a typical Canadian plant. The process involves the extraction and concentration of deuterium from natural water through a chemical exchange mechanism with hydrogen sulphide. Consequently, corrosion problems associated with sour environments – the use of hydrogen sulphide - are an everyday problem and have led to the development of a highly refined materials selection and testing program to prevent equipment from failing prematurely.IntroductionHeavy water is a naturally occurring compound in ordinary water and is formed from the combination of two deuterium atoms and one atom of oxygen. Deuterium is a heavy hydrogen atom which has a nucleus of on e proton and one neutron. Hence, heavy water is a combination of heavy hydrogen and oxygen and is chemically known as deuterium oxide. It looks and tastes like ordinary water but it freezes at 3.8°C and boils at 101.4°C. The molecular weight of heavy water is 20 as compared to 18 for ordinary water; the density of heavy water is ten per cent greater than that of ordinary water.Although heavy water and ordinary water exhibit only small differences in their chemical and physical properties, there are large differences in their nuclear properties, the most important of which is the neutron moderating ratio, used to measure the ratio o f the slowing down power to the neutron capture characteristics. For heavy water the ratio is 21000 and for ordinary water it is 50. This high moderating ratio is essential for achieving a high neutron economy. Heavy water is, therefore, chosen as the moderating and heat transport fluid in the CANDU reactor."
