The bulk of the work being done today in applied rheology seems to be concerned with the behavior of polymeric solutions and thus has limited application to the solid-liquid systems encountered in mineral beneficiation. The authors have approached the problem by carrying out a dimensional analysis which showed that for power law fluids the drag coefficient, Ds, must be some function of a generalized Reynolds number which has the form: If the power law adequately describes the behavior of a fluid, the dimensional analyses predicts that the Ds - RN function should hold for all values of n' or any other dependent variable. The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston Open Pit is mining through a dense network of disused level workings and open stopes of greatly varying sizes. The condition of the stope crowns and remnants is often unknown, and ultimately these structures become a significant proportion of the production floor and pit walls. Significant seismic events and occasionally rock bursts often occur in the underground workings. Seismicity is becoming an issue to the viability of the KCGM Fimiston operations. KCGM needs to take a leading role in understanding mine-induced and regional seismicity. The seismic system trials were initiated in the Fimiston Open Pit in 1996 using the ISS system. The initial system included two triaxial geophone arrays and two triaxial accelerometer arrays installed into two boreholes. The main objectives of the trial were to investigate the suitability of the two types of sensors and the detectability of seismicity in the pit. The trial was regarded as a success and the system has been expanded and improved. The current system consists of 12 triaxial geophone and accelerometer arrays and nine uniaxial geophones. The 12 triaxial arrays are installed in nine boreholes drilled from the pit and the nine uniaxial geophones are installed from underground level workings about 660 m below the original surface elevation. The system is designed to provide seismicity coverage for the entire pit area that is about 2.7 kilometres long, 1.5 kilometres wide and about 300 metres deep. The accuracy of the source location has always been a challenge due to the existence of the dense concentration of stopes and lack of the sensors. It is uncommon to have direct ray path for the seismic waves to propagate to the sensors across the strike, hence sensors have been located along strike and under the old workings. This paper discusses some of the challenges associated with seismic monitoring near mine remnants and seismically active faults. The results of the seismic monitoring are presented, and contrasted to results of three dimensional boundary element numerical modelling. The impact of the seismicity upon pit slope stability is briefly discussed.

AT the New York meeting of the American Institute of Mining-and Metallurgical Engineers held in February, 1926, W. H. Bassett and J. C. Bradley presented a paper entitled "Exudations on Copper Castings."§ The purpose of the present paper, as the title suggests, is to call attention to somewhat similar phenomena which the authors have encountered in brass and bronze. From a study of the examples given, a more-or-less speculative theory of "inverse segregation" is advanced. PROTUBERANCES ON ADMIRALTY BRASS In the rolling mill of the Scovill Manufacturing Co., there have been found quite commonly bars of certain alloys which had a sort of shaggy roughness on the surface due to slight metallic protuberances. No special attention was paid to these until some bars were found on which these protuberances were heavy enough at the bottom of the bars to produce a blistered appearance. A sample of the protuberances was milled off the surface of the bar illustrated (Fig.. 1a) and upon analysis was found to contain 66.66 percent. copper, 4.02 per cent. tin and .03 . per cent. lead, whereas the average composition of the bar was 70.21 per cent. copper, 1.21 per cent. tin, and .01 per cent. lead. A sample of the shaggy-rough protuberances at the -very top of a bar was also analyzed and was found to contain 2.45 per cent. tin, indicating that it was probably of the same origin as the blistered areas. These results were not entirely unexpected for previous analyses of this alloy had -revealed that the surface was richer in tin than the rest of the bar. This, of course, is contrary to what we would expect from a consideration of the equilibrium diagram and has been called "inverse segregation."

There is no better way of paying tribute to the memory of a scientist than by developing and carrying forward those ideas which he has contributed to science and which are for us the very essence of his immortality. For a lecturer who has not had the great privilege of stdying under Professor Howe or 'ven of knowing him in person, these ideas must be transmitted through the printed word. It is our great good fortune that Professor Howe left to us a rich heritage of publication, not only in his classic monograph on the "Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron" but in a wealth of earlier hooks and papers in the transactions of this Institute arid of other scientific and engineering bodies. An outstanding characteristic of this published record is the great breadth of interest and of vision which it portrays. His was riot a narrow specialization in only the scientific aspects of ferrous metallographg. On the contra1y many of his important contributions had to do with a far broader field of metallurgicial endeavor. He insisted that his students be well grounded in 1 he fundamentals underlying the whole field and not led into the narrow groove of specific applications. Among his first major publications we find papers on copper smelting, extraction of nickel, the efficiency of fans and blowers, thermic curves of blast furnaces, the cost, of coke, and the manufacture of steel. These are the papers of a metalhurgical engineer and it was among engineers that Henry Marion Howe made his early and well-merited reputation. These early engineering contributions display very clearly the strongly sctientific inclination of their author. The classic work on "The Metallurgy of Steel" published in 1890 contains a thorough and critical discussion of all that was known at the time concerning the alloys of iron and of what we would now call the physical metallurgy of steel. In addition it describes steel-making processes in use and some that had become obsolete, and points out in critical fashion the reasons for success and failure. Steel mill design and layout were included as well as some pertinent discussion of refractories. The book is indeed an embodiment of one of Howe's outstanding characteristics—breadth. It is both the science and the engineering of steel production as known in that day. One of Howe's earliest technical papers was entitled "What is Steel?" That was nearly seventy-five years ago when many new processes and new kinds of steel were being developed. The time was ripe for such a question and the answers which Howe was able to give were helpful in understanding the phenomena of heat treatment. Twenty-five years ago Professor Sauveur repeated the question as the title of the first Henry Marion Howe Memorial Lecture. It seemed to him that this question, "What is Steel?," had served as Howe's motto throughout the remainder of his life. Today I shall present for your consideration a question of another sort: "What is Sletallurgy?" Perhaps it is not too much to hope that in the answer we may obtain a clearer and possibly broader view of the nature of our science and our profession. The time is ripe for giving careful consideration to what we mean by metallurgy. If our Metals Branch is to become in fact an American institute of Metallurgical Engineers, it is essential that we understand what is meant by metallurgical engineering. I am convinced that the best interests of the profession have not been served by a narrow interpretation of these terms. We must now place emphasis on the breadth of metallurgy as a science and as an engineering profession. With its usual brevity and wit. Webster's dictionary definesmetallurgy as "the science and art of extracting metals from their ores, refining them and preparing them for use." I shall riot assume that the words "science" and "art" and "metal" are so well understood as to require no defining but others among our contemporaries are better qualified than either your lecturer or the dictionary to present the broad meanings of these terms. When we say that metallurgy is among the oldest of the arts we are not classing it with painting or sculpture or music but rather with the making of tools or weapons or the building of bridges or chariots or cathedrals. In short we are saying that metallurgy is among the oldest of the engineering professions. The question " What is metallurg ? " has been one of rather more than ordinary concern to those of us who have the task of developing a curriculum for the education of students in this field. This development has been going on in a number of universities over a period of some years. but there seems to be as yet no unanimity as to what such a curriculum should contain. "The anisotropy of rock is of great importance to the rock engineering. To investigate the anisotropic character of slate, the rock samples of slate under different confining pressures and bedding plane angles was conducted on the MTS. The results indicated that the relationship between bedding plane angle and elasticity modulus, friction angle, cohesion and strength was shown as U pattern. The minimum value of them is located from 30°to 45°.In addition, the elasticity modulus and Poisson's ratio increase with the increasing confining pressure. The slate behaves brittle failure both in the uniaxial and triaxial compression. The failure pattern of uniaxial compression is generally tension failure, and triaxial test usually shows shear failure. The failure angle decrease with the increasing of confining pressure.INTRODUCTIONThe anisotropy of rock is that loading in different orientations the rock has different mechanical properties. The anisotropic property of rock is always an important problem in rock engineering (Hoek E. & Brown E. T., 1980). J. C. Jaeger (1960) first presented that transverse strength criterion for sliding fracture on joint surface. Later he revised rock parameters to anisotropy empirically for isotropic Mohr- Coulomb criterion. His main idea is revising cohesion according to loading direction (J. C. Jaeger, 1971). Then, many scholars study a lot on transverse strength criterion. E. Z. Lajtai (1969) considered the influence of connecting rate in all directions in joint groups for shear strength in intact rock; R. Mclamore and K. E. Gray (1967) referenced the theory of J. C. Jaeger. They not only revised cohesion also revised friction coefficient. Y. M. Tien (2000, 2001) made further study on the influence of connecting rate in joint group to transverse strength. R. Nova (1980) studied on the variation of strength when rock specimens in triaxial pressure and complex stress paths. O. Cazacu(1998) put forwards a new anisotropic strength criterion for analyzing rock strength. S. Pietruszczak(2000) introduced fabric tensor for characterizing inner seismic structure and he built an anisotropic strength criterion containing the invariants of stress tensor and seismic fabric tensor."

Mt. Newman Mining Co. is now completing an expansion program, begun even before initial construction was complete, which will result in the ability to ship up to 35 million tpy of iron ore by early 1973. Located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, the mine at Mt. Whaleback is about 700 road miles north of Perth and 265 railroad miles south of the port facilities at Port Hedland. Development of the tertiary crushing and screening facilities best illustrates the orderly, but rapid, sequence through which the capacity of the port loading terminal has been expanded. When the present program is completed, crushing and shiploading capability will reach - - 35 million tpy. Operations commenced in 1969 with 3 crusher lines in service; and despite the 5-million annual ton rating, 6.46 million tons of ore were shipped during the first full year of operation. With continuing increase in ore sales, expansion to an annual capacity of 12 million tons was authorized, and installation of two more crusher lines was begun. As a part of this program, provision for installation of a sixth crusher at some future date was included in the planning; but before construction was completed, new ore sales contracts demanded further expansion to an annual rate of 20 million tons, and the sixth crusher line was authorized. The distributing and collecting conveyors had been designed for extension in length and increase in capacity, therefore, conveyor service was provided for the additional crushers with additional belting and hardware only.

"Direct cobalt electrowinning was developed to produce unrefined cobalt metal as an alternative to producing a mixed hydroxide product (MHP), which is the common cobalt intermediate product in African Copperbelt operations. MHP is preferred due to the high cost of producing high-grade cobalt cathode. Direct cobalt electrowinning test work results have shown that the purity of the unrefined cobalt metal produced from a low-grade copper solvent-extraction raffinate stream was ~97% (w/w), which is significantly higher than the MHP purity (up to 45% (w/w) Co). The current study investigates whether direct cobalt electrowinning would increase the profitability of African Copperbelt copper–cobalt oxide operations, when compared with the MHP flowsheet. An order-of-magnitude economic evaluation was conducted using dynamic differential discounted cash flow models on a “bare-bones” basis, using a 10% discount rate. Three variables were evaluated, namely; reagent utilisation extents, precipitation extents and filter-press wash efficiency. Multivariable risk analysis was also conducted using the Monte Carlo simulation technique to understand the impact of key project drivers. The financial study results indicated that a direct cobalt electrowinning flowsheet could potentially result in a higher mean net present value (NPV) compared with the MHP flowsheet. Cobalt recovery was found to have the most significant impact on the NPV. In addition to increased profitability of African Copperbelt operations, direct cobalt electrowinning has the potential to reduce the environmental footprint of operations as well as addressing the Democratic Republic of Congo government’s drive towards export of higher value metal products instead of low-grade intermediates."

During World War II the Pocos de Caldas bauxite deposits of Minas Gerais in Brazil yielded some 60,000 tons. Since then they have maintained a small but almost continuous production. Known for many years, the deposits have been reconnoitered by a number of geologists,1-4 but no dimensional study has been possible because there have not been enough exposures to show clearly the depth, bedrock, and habit of occurrence. The deposits are somewhat unorthodox in their occurrence mainly on steep slopes of mountainous terrain. Although the parent rocks are a sequence of alkalic intrusions that bauxitize readily under the proper conditions, bauxitization has not been the dominant weathering process in the area. It is limited to certain localities where important volumes of bauxite have formed by laterization of several rock types, each yielding a distinctive type of bauxite. Bauxitization may be observed in several stages and in both direct and indirect cycles of formation. The deposits are unique in being of demonstrably recent age, so that the conditions under which the bauxite formed are essentially those of the present time. The bauxitization sequence is postulated in Fig. 1. Pocos de Caldas district is situated at approximately 21" 50' south latitude and 46" 30' west longitude in southwestern Minas Gerais, near its boundary with the state of Sao Paulo. It lies within the Eastern Plateau physiographic province of Brazil, occupying a prominent highland area that rises some 2000 ft above the surrounding country. The central portion of the Pocos de Caldas highland is characterized by gently undulating topography, with generally sluggish drainage, and is surrounded by a rim of hills rising above 1000 ft above it. In cross section the highland resembles a truncated cone with a depressed central area. The rim has been sculptured into a more prominent and abrupt topographic pattern than the central area, and streams that are of low to moderate gradient in the central plateau plunge over the rim in a spectacular series of cascades and falls. GEOLOGIC SETTING The Pocos de Caldas highland owes its physiographic expression mainly to the differential erosion of a complex intrusion of alkalic rocks into gneiss and sandstone. Erosion was guided somewhat by faulting. The highland is almost circular, and its limits, except in one locality, coincide with the periphery of the intrusion. The alkalic intrusions largely control its shape and extent, aided by some subsidence through faulting of the central portion. The mountainous rim of chilled phase, the later intrusions, and the indurated intruded rocks have resisted erosion more effectively than the central portion of the intrusion, which is composed of more coarsely crystalline alkalic rocks that form a central basin in the highland. Gneiss and sandstone are found coincident in elevation with the topographically highest intrusions. BAUXITE TYPES Most of the bauxite, which varies in physical type, is on the top and steep slopes of the northern rim. The only alumina mineral is gibbsite, definitely crystalline but iron-stained unless of secondary origin. Clay particles occurring with the bauxite are kaolinite. Some types of bauxite are an index to their origin. There are four general physical types of bauxite or bauxite laterite: 1) Surface Rubble: This partly nodular and partly fragmented type, usually less than 3 ft thick, results from surface weathering of massive bauxite or may form by superficial enrichment of nodular bauxite with a clay matrix when the interstitial clay is removed by surface runoff.

THE necessity for slime elimination from valuable mineral and coal products has become increasingly significant within the past 5 years.' , Most of the mechanized mining and present beneficiation methods have resulted in larger tonnages of extreme fines, silts, and clay, commonly called slimes, processed by the preparation plant. Economics in turn have forced the plant operator constantly to lower the bottom size of effective beneficiation, necessitating an almost complete recovery of valuable solids regardless of particle size. When these important factors are considered, the need for an efficient slime removal method for fine solids becomes self-evident. Ordinarily slimes have been classified as ranging from 75 microns, or 200 mesh, down to colloidal dimensions of less than one micron. At the same time there is general agreement that the most troublesome slimes are primarily clays, silts and extreme fines, so that the actual top size may be placed at approximately 30 to 40 microns. This immediately restricts any desliming operation to classification, as screening or other methods would be both uneconomical and grossly inefficient at such dimensions. "SynopsisSouth Africa recently announced a resurgence in its commercial nuclear power programme. The implications for the development of the necessary high-level manpower within South Africa’s tertiary educational system and its national research and development (R&D) capacity in materials science and engineering, as well as in other engineering disciplines, are placed into perspective. An organized national process of developing this manpower by moving away from the previously high-risk and costly ’large programmes’ to rather a selection of ‘small and better’ research projects and a redefinition of what constitutes ‘nuclear materials’ are proposed as parts of this strategy.IntroductionSince 2008, and more particularly in 2014/2015, South Africa has woken up to the fact that significant steps need to be taken to ensure sufficient electricity generating capacity for the future, even beyond the coal-fired stations at Medupi and Kusile currently under construction. It is, therefore, encouraging to see some active large-scale wind farms in the Eastern Cape near Jeffrey’s Bay, in the Couga area, and others in the Western Cape already in operation. In addition, many solar energy projects are also progressing from the small localized scale to larger programmes in the Northern Cape, which may contribute some capacity on a national basis. South Africa needs to tap into its renewable resources of wind and solar much more, but will these projects solve the country’s long-term industrial needs? Unfortunately not. One cannot run mines and trains on solar cells. Industry needs reliable baseload capacity, and with very limited easily accessible hydrocapacity this leaves really only coal, possibly natural gas, and nuclear power as options. South Africa’s current over-reliance of about 90% on coal–fired power, however, places it in an internationally vulnerable position, and diversification into a more equitable energy mix should be a national priority for the medium to long term. South Africa cannot significant climate change confronting the human race, as the IPCC cautioned in 2013, and will have to adjust its future energy reliance to a more balanced combination of sources."

A portable electronic instrument was developed which will measure change of longitudinal wave velocity with change of uniaxial stress in rock columns. The instrument is a solid-state device powered by nickel-cadmium batteries. It uses a probe of two piezo-electric crystals spaced inches apart to send and receive a pulse through a stressed rock. A one-inch cathode ray oscilloscope visually displays the longitudinal wave. A reference chart is used to find the stress. Laboratory results have indicated that the average stress on a sandstone column can be found to within 35 psi. The feasibility of using this instrument to determine stresses in mine pillars is to be studied. The instrument may be used to investigate physical properties of rock.

Leach heaps are plagued with problems due to fine material migrating downwards, clogging the spaces between the coarser ore particles, resulting in decreased metal recovery rates. The use of a binder in agglomeration would allow the fine material to be immobilized, increasing the availability for the solution to come in contact with all the ore. As much as 1.64*1012 BTU per year would be able to be saved if a 25% increase in copper recovery was experienced, assuming that 70% of heap leaching units converted to using agglomeration technology. This is equivalent to approximately 18% of the energy currently being used in leaching heaps.

The habit planes for zirconium hydride precipitation in crystals of a zirconium have been determined at various hydrogen concentrations. The (10 • 0)planes are the predominant habit planes; some (10 • 5) and (10 -1) planes were observed after charging conditions which pevmitted formation of a surface layer of hydride. No platelets zrlere observed parallel to any of the twinning planes. Mechanisms for em-brittlement due to hydride precipitation are discussed. LANGERON and Lehr1 found, in 1956, that zirconium hydride precipitates in zirconium in platelets lying parallel to (10.0) slip planes. In 1960, Kunz and Bibbz reported observing the platelets in three different families of twinning planes, (10.2) {11.1), and {11.2), but never in the slip planes. The present study was undertaken to ascertain the cause of these seemingly contradictory results. EXPERIMENTAL Two specimens of iodide zirconium were used in the experiments. Specimen I was a single crystal, while specimen II contained three grains. Grain growth was accomplished by the technique of Lange-ron and Lehr. Three faces were ground on specimen I; the first was 2 deg from the (00.1) basal plane, a second was 2 deg from the (10.0) prism plane, and a third was 4 deg from the (12.0) plane. One face was ground on specimen II such that the poles of the surfaces of crystals A, B, and C were as shown in Fig. 1. After the faces were ground on 600 grit silicon carbide paper, they were chemically polished by dipping in a solution of 8 parts hydrofluoric acid, 50 parts nitric acid, and 50 parts water. This removed all cold worked metal from the surface. The samples were charged to various levels of hydrogen content by heating in hydrogen gas which had been purified by reaction with uranium powder. The various charging conditions are shown in Table I. Specimen I was heated to the reaction temperature at the indicated hydrogen pressure and allowed to react until essentially all the hydrogen was used up. The present case history deals with the examination of an almost forgotten nickel prospect, near Winesap, Chelan County, Washington. Although the final results yielded no ore body of commercial importance, the integration of surface and underground exploration, geophysical survey and diamond drilling endow the story with interest. The program is significant because it is illustrative of how the most disappointing expenditures in mining exploration, the "not-finding" costs, could have been reduced had geophysical methods been applied at an appropriate stage in the prospecting work. The Chelan nickel deposit was discovered about 1900, on a sage-brush-covered hillside with a southerly slope, adjacent to Winesap Canyon; the paved highway now extending from Wenatchee northward, up the Columbia River and into Okanogan Valley, is only a mile away. After the deposit was found, three short prospect tunnels were driven into it, and the prospect then remained dormant for 40 years. No. x tunnel was 80 ft. long, running north into the hillside. For the first 35 ft. this adit exposed a typical, iron-stained gossan with streaks and stains of malachite, and small seams of water-soluble nickel sulphate. Beyond this, it encountered a relatively fresh peridotite, well mineralized with blebs of pentlandite. Systematic sampling yielded an average assay of 1.5 per cent nickel and 0.3 per cent copper. Down the hillside to the south and 35 ft. lower in elevation, No. 2 tunnel was driven under No. I and in the same direction, traversing 50 ft. of gneiss before it reached the peridotite. At this point the latter formation showed only scattered blebs of sulphides, not of commercial grade. To the west, on the same contour line as No. I tunnel, and 800 ft. around the hillside from it, No. 3 tunnel was driven 50 ft. into the hill to explore a strong gossan outcrop that assayed 0.5 per cent nickel (Fig. I). From the geological exposures on the hillside and in the tunnels, it appears that the main mass of the hill is formed of an ancient and altered gneiss complex. Into this, a sill-like injection of amphibolite (altered peridotite) was intruded, which, at least in some places, contains commercial quantities of nickel sulphide. Its structure is obscure, but it appears to dip into the hill at an angle of about 15°. In the vicinity of No. 3 tunnel a large dike of quartz diorite cuts the peridotite or amphibolite; about 140 ft. north of the portal of the tunnel, a dike of andesite 00 ft. wide cuts boldly up the hillside to break the continuity of the peridotite in that direction. The geological evidence available was not adequate to decide whether the peridotite forms a continuous sill, or occurs as isolated bodies in the gneiss. "There have been many design practices utilised within the coal mining industry to arrive at the minimum densities of primary ground support required during roadway development. This paper demonstrates the practical use of empirical databases, and focuses on the main drivers for ground support as demonstrated in conceptual models.Golder Associates’ empirical databases used for ground support include a Primary Roof Support Database and a Primary Rib Support Database. Both are based on successful ground support designs installed in mines in Australia, the US, the UK, South Africa, New Zealand, and Europe. The term “successful” refers to those designs that were used on a repeated basis for the purpose of roadway development.The Primary Roof Support Database indicates that the major factors influencing successful roof support designs are roof competency, expressed as the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), and in situ stress. As roof displacement is essentially a function of horizontal stress and roof competency, in order to provide some form of measure as to the likely magnitude of roof deformation during roadway development, the depth of cover is divided by the CMRR to arrive at a “Stress Strength Ratio” (SSR). The database indicates that the higher the SSR, the greater the likelihood that the roof will require higher densities of support.In regard to the Primary Rib Support Database, it is evident from the current database that the primary factors affecting the capacity of rib support required for a successful design are roadway height and depth of cover. In order to provide some form of measure as to the likely magnitude of rib deformation during roadway development, the depth of cover is multiplied by the height of the roadway to determine a “Rib Deformation Rating” (RDR). Similar to the roof, the database indicates that the higher the RDR, the greater the likelihood that the rib will require higher densities of support.These databases have been used to help determine the minimum primary ground support designs required at many mine sites in Australasia, Europe, and the US. This paper will demonstrate the effectiveness and practicality of these databases at two selected mines in Australia and the US.In order to improve the Primary Rib Support Database, this paper will also propose a new rib deformation rating based on the addition of site specific coal strength data for the Australian mines. The proposed rating attempts to capture the main variables that define the behaviour of a buckling column."

This paper concerns field experiments to define the areal extent, orientation and thickness of an artificial fracture in the Sacatosa field, Maverick County, Tex. The fracture was made by a sand-oil treatment of 176,-000 gal of lease crude containing a fluid-loss additive and 270,000 lb of 20-40 mesh subangular Poteet sand. The well was perforated with a jet gun, consisting of six shots in a single plane. Fourteen test holes were drilled at various locations around the fractured well. Drill-stem tests, Micro and Sonic Logs, coring and sampling of formation cuttings were used to determine the presence of the fracture in these holes. The test holes were drilled at distances up to 250 ft in a radial pattern around the fractured well. In addition to fracture areal extent and orientation, sand grain size before and after fracturing, erosion of perforations and fracture thickness were studied. INTRODUCTION The orientation,12 areal extent3, 4 and thickness5-9 of artificially induced fractures in reservoir rock by hydraulic means have been discussed in great detail in the oil industry in recent years. Methods for initiating vertical"' and horizontal" fractures have been tested in the laboratory and the field. Although the methods used give successful well stimulation, good field data on the physical characteristics of the fracture are lacking in the literature. It is recognized generally that properties of a fracture, such as thickness, sand placement in the fracture" and shape, may vary from reservoir to reservoir. This paper gives data on size, orientation and sand placement in a large fracture initiated in a single plane in Sacatosa field, Maverick County, Tex. It is not intended as a speculative study; rather, it is restricted to actual field data on fracture properties. No attempt is made to prove that the same type of fracture occurs in all wells. The field procedure was to drill 14 test holes at various locations around the fractured well. By employing several different testing techniques, the presence of the fracture and some of its characteristics were determined. These techniques as well as the results obtained are discussed in detail in this paper. DESCRIPTION OF FRACTURE TREATMENT N. J. Chittim Well No. 37-1, completed in the San Miguel No. 1 sand, Sacatosa field, Maverick County, Tex., was chosen for the field study. The San Miguel sand is a tight, well consolidated sandstone with an average porosity of 23 per cent. The permeability ranges from 0.1 to 10 md, with a median permeability of 2.3 md. The sand thickness averages 23 ft and is located at depths of 1,150 to 1,700 ft throughout the field.I3 The fracture treatment performed on Well 37-1 was as follows. 1. The well was drilled to a depth of 1,438 ft with native mud, and 51/2-in. casing was set and cemented to the surface. 2. The casing was perforated at 1,349 ft with a fracture-initiating jet gun. This gun consists of six shots, 7/16-in. diameter in a single horizontal plane. The jets were oriented in two groups of three, 180" opposed. The perforating device was designed to initiate a fracture perpendicular to the wellbore.

The Waihi Region is host to many low sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag deposits. The Golden Cross mine located at the head of the Waitekauri River, eight kilometres NW of Waihi, was a gold mining operation that placed significant emphasis on environmental management. An assessment of the influence of this mining project on stream sediment geochemistry (Fe, Mn, As, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, Ni, Ag and Se) in the Waitekauri Catchment has been made. Effective waste management during the mine operation appears to have prevented contamination of stream sediment. Trace metal concentrations in the Waitekauri Catchment sediment have generally decreased since 1987, and are currently mainly below the ANZECC (2000) sediment quality guidelines. However, elevated As levels were recorded in the Upper Waitekauri River and Battery Stream, exceeding guideline values. Elevated levels of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd were found in the Huanui Stream, a tributary of the lower Waitekauri River. This reflects the influence of past mining operations in the valley, as well as natural weathering of hydrothermally altered Coromandel Group andesite. At a number of sites, Mn concentrations also exceeded sediment quality guidelines, and this may be derived from the remediated Golden Cross mine site.

The writing of this paper was prompted by the discussion by H. M. Chance of the paper written by Thomas M. Chance,l and by the remarks of the editor in which he stated that while the matter contained in discussion did not refer to the original paper it " was presented as of interest to the operators of cyanide and other lixiviation processes dealing with fluid mixtures of varying specific gravity." For some years past the principle enunciated in the discussion referred to has been known to the writer and demonstrated by him to be an efficient and economical way of separating water or solution from solids in the cyanidation, lixiviation or acid leaching of ore pulps. In utilizing this principle in commercial practice he has invented a method whereby not only the separation of solution from solids may be effected in any given tank, but also the counter migration of the solids and solution may be effected continuously through a series of tanks in which the hydro-metallurgical treatment of ore pulps is being carried on. In effect this method is analogous to the counter-current system, but is different physically in that it is carried on throughout a series of tanks on practically the same level, continuously and automatically, by hydrostatic pressure and gravity-flow, without the aid of intervening pumps or elevators, at the same time that agitation is being carried on in the same tanks. In the Parral system, agitation is effected in tanks by a number of air lifts of comparatively small diameter through which the pulp is continuously transferred from the bottom of the tank and spouted horizontally on top of the charge. The spouting force of the several streams thus discharged maintains a rotary flow in the pulp charge which extends from top to bottom of the tank. This continuous transfer of pulp and the spiral flow from top to bottom of the tank maintains the pulp constituents in uniform proportions and meets the requirements of efficient treatment in a most economical manner. The quantity of compressed air required is very small, as the pulp is not lifted but simply transferred from the bottom to the top of the tank charge under hydrostatic balance. During the first fifteen years of operation at the Syncrude facility in northern Alberta, numerous improvements have been made in the field of ore conveying. The unique nature of the material conveyed coupled with the wide range of environmental conditions encountered results in a number of unparalleled challenges. Most of the improvements have been brought about with the use of detailed field evaluation. This paper outlines some of the programs which have been run to optimise belt and system construction, and conveyor performance and utilization.
