RECENTLY spectrophotometry has been reported to provide a convenient technique for the rapid and reproducible determination of xanthate concentration in pulp solution 1,2 and for a kinetic study of xanthate decomposition in acid solutions." Since the application of this analytical technique is feasible for those compounds showing pronounced light absorption maxima in the near ultraviolet region, it was deemed advisable to investigate the absorption spectra of some of the organic compounds that are used in flotation. It is known empirically that certain groups of atoms in an organic compound cause characteristic light absorption in the ultraviolet and near ultraviolet range, and the wavelengths and intensities of the corresponding absorption maxima are relatively independent of the nature of the remainder of the compound. The characteristic values of such groups, which are known as chromophores, are given in the literature. 4,5 According to this information, many of the sulphydryl compounds are expected to show absorption maxima in the near or long wavelength ultraviolet region, whereas the saturated fatty acids and the saturated alkylamines do not.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating low-chromium alloy substitutes for type 304 stainless steel (type 304 SS). The purpose of the research is to reduce the chromium content in austenitic stainless steels used for corrosion-resistant applications. Nine Fe-9Cr-12Ni alloys containing additions of 0 to 5 pct Mo, 0 to 2 pct V, and 0 to 2 pct Cu were selected for evaluation. All of the experimental alloys containing 5 pct Mo and an alloy containing 2Mo-2V-2Cu possessed structure and tensile strengths similar to those of type 304 SSe Alloys containing SMo-2V and SMo-2V-2Cu had ac-ceptable welding properties as measured by the Varestraint test. Alloys containing at least 2 pct Mo had cQrrosion resistance comparable to that of type 304 SS in solutions of nitric acid, phosphoric acid, acetic acid, and citric acid. In chlorides, all the experimental alloys were susceptible to localized corrosion and stress corrosion cracking similar to that of type 304 SSe The corrosion properties were established by weight-loss tests, electrochemical polarization tests, and stress-corrosion cracking tests. An Fe-9Cr-12Ni-SMo-2V alloy and an Fe-9Cr-12Ni-SMo-2V-2Cu alloy had a combination of welding properties, tensile properties, and corrosion resistances that were most comparable to those of 304 SS.

A preliminary mineral-dressing study of five samples of East Texas limonitic brown iron ores was conducted as part of the Bureau of Mines program to develop and extend domestic resources of iron ore. The samples were considered to be typical of ore currently being mined and beneficiated by the Lone Star Steel Co. and Sheffield Steel Co. The objective of the research was to investigate those mineral-dressing unit operations that might recover some of the fine iron lost in current industrial wastes or perhaps improve the recoveries when applied to the ores as well. Since current industrial beneficiation practice yields a washed limonite analyzing 41 to 45 percent iron, higher grade concentrates were not sought in this laboratory study. Laboratory investigation included washing and sizing, reduction roasting, and subsequent magnetic separation of the finely ground roasted materials. The results showed that laboratory recoveries of over 80 percent of the iron were possible, for the ores investigated, at concentrate grades comparable to those expected from cur-rent industrial beneficiation practice. United states reserves of oil and gas have been steadily declining while consumption of petroleum products has continued to increase. The nut result has been an ever increasing shortfall between supply and demand. This imbalance has been made up by imports of both oil and gas causing a strain on the United States Balance of Payments. To complicate the situation further, exporting nations have recently formed a cartel and dramatically increased the selling price of petroleum products. To meet U.S. energy demand, increased attention has been drawn to the production of synthetic oil and gas from coal. To date, considerable research has been conducted and is continuing on various processes for liquefaction and gasification of coal. Some of these processes are now in the pilot plant stage and at least one demonstration plant has been proposed. The coal conversion complexes envisioned will be very large, requiring substantial capital investments and abundant reserves of coal. Coal production to feed these proposed complexes has been estimated on the order of 75,000 tons per day. With the viability of these projects becoming economically attractive, the Office of Coal Research initiated a contract with Fluor Utah to determine and define the problems of surface mining coal at very high mining rates, under varied physical, geographic, and climatic conditions. The flow of recent events in the Middle East has created a greater sense of urgency for this study.

Column flotation testing was conducted on the flotation feed slurry obtained from a preparation plant located in the Southern Illinois coal basin. The column flotation tests were conducted using three different bubble generating devices: a static sparger, a gas saver and a foam jet. Each of these devices was tested with three different types of frother and various column operating variables to provide maximum combustible recovery, minimum product ash and maximum pyrite rejection. The results show that column flotation provided improved flotation performance, in terms of combustible recovery as well as ash and pyrite rejection, for each of the bubble generating devices. However, the effectiveness of each bubble generating device was dependent on the type of frother used. Alcohol frothers were most effective for use with the static sparger, somewhat less effective for the foam jet and ineffective for the gas saver. Glycol frothers were effective for all three bubble generating systems, providing high combustible recovery (>90%); low clean-coal ash (4-6% ash) and high pyrite rejection (70-80%).

INTRODUCTION A shuttle car is a self-propelled rubber-tired haul¬age vehicle designed specifically for underground min¬ing, primarily in coal mines (see Figs. 1 and 2). The drive mechanism is located on the sides of the vehicle, and the load is carried in the center. A chain-and-flight conveyor distributes the load when the car is being loaded by a loading machine or continuous miner and also discharges the load onto a conveyor belt or into a mine car. As the name implies, the shuttle car shuttles back and forth between the working face and the un¬loading point and is not required to turn around. Shuttle cars have served as primary haulage in this country since 1940 and still perform this function in most coal mines today. TYPES OF SHUTTLE CARS Shuttle cars may be battery-powered, diesel-powered, or cable-reel electric powered. Battery-powered cars were used between 1940 and 1950, but are almost out of existence today because of their limited power. Diesel cars have been used in coal mines, but are used mostly in noncoal mines where rules and regulations are not as stringent. Also, objections by organized labor have limited the use of diesel-powered shuttle cars in coal mines. Today, the largest number of shuttle cars are cable-reel cars. Electric power is fed through a cable stored on a cable reel that may have a capacity from 152 to 244 m (500 to 800 ft), depending upon the size of the cable and the cable reel (see Table 1). This, of course, limits the travel of a shuttle car. However, time studies have shown that for the most efficient haulage cycle, the length of haulage should not exceed 91 m (300 ft). As haulage distance increases, the waiting time for the loader or miner becomes longer, and haul¬age efficiency suffers. Cable-reel cars are manufactured in standard hand and opposite standard hand models. A standard car has the operator's control on the left front side and the opposite standard car has the opera¬tor's controls on the right front. Generally a loader or miner operates with two shuttle cars, one of each type. This allows the trailing cable to lie on either side of the entry and prevents the cables from fouling each other. Shuttle cars are designed to operate with either dc or ac power. Cars using dc power are designed for 250-v supply and ac cars are designed for either 440, 550, or 950 v, three-phase voltage. Most coal mines that are relatively level can use dc cars where dynamic brak¬ing is not required. For mines having steep grades (in excess of 15%) ac cars are used because ac traction motors have inherent dynamic braking and are safer when tramming downgrade. A recent innovation in shuttle car design in the last five years has been the introduction of an ac/dc car. This design utilizes ac input power through the cable, and the power is rectified on the car to 250-v do for traction motors. The pump motor and conveyor motor are powered by ac voltage. The main advantage of this design is efficiency-a much smaller cable may be used and the smooth operating characteristics of the dc traction motor is obtained. This prevents shock loading on the traction drive train, which is an undesirable feature of ac traction motors. SHUTTLE CAR FEATURES Elevating Discharge Today, all shuttle cars are equipped with an elevating front conveyor that allows the shuttle car to discharge into a mine car or belt feeder without the use of ramps. Household zinc based batteries contain some heavy metals such as zinc, manganese and mercury. There is a large effort from manufacturers in order to eliminate the last one. As a municipal waste, the disposal of batteries has become an increasing worry. The aim of the present work was to characterize dry batteries scraps, and establish a flowsheet for their processing. This was done using unit operations of mineral processing and parameters and yields of each stage have been defined. Such procedures have been chosen due to their low cost. The operations were hammer mill grinding, size separation, magnetic separation and specific weight separation in water. The characterization step was done through chemical analysis and x-ray difiactometry. After size classification, it was verified that 76.6% of the total amount of zinc was over 1.70mm. This fiaction was constituted basically of zinc and some coarse pieces from the steel body, paper and plastics. This fraction was submitted to magnetic separation followed by specific weight separation in water. A visual examination showed that during the grinding process, graphite was concentrated in the finer fractions. Manganese concentration in the fractions over 6,35mm was less than 2%. This means that there was low contamination by the paste in this fraction. It was due to the entrapment of the paste by steel scraps (from the body) and zinc (from the cup) during grinding.

During construction of the intake tunnels for a nuclear power facility in Ohio, evidence of a potential geological discontinuity was discovered. Assuming that the discontinuity might still prevail underneath the site, it was decided to measure the stress profile across the discontinuity. This information would be used to assess future stability on the basis of predicted shear stresses acting along the fracture. Seven intervals were hydraulically fractured to determine the magnitude and orientation of the stress tensor, in order to infer the shear stresses acting along the discontinuity. The formation consists of tightly interbedded shales. This, in combination with the shallow depths, would be expected to lead to horizontal hydraulic fractures -- a situation which generally provides limited information. Careful testing procedures, and meticulous interpretation, allowed the determination of the horizontal stress components as well as the vertical component, via the initiation and/or propagation of multiple fractures. The measured stresses fall within the range of stress magnitudes and orientation determined in other areas of the northeastern and north-central United States and in southern parts of Canada. In addition, a small stress gradient anomaly was recorded at depth. On a different scale, the measured stress regime is also evaluated in light of the regional geological setting.

The Buick mill is located at the site of the old Buick general store, approximately 4 miles south of Bixby, Missouri on route KK. It is a part of the operations in the area now called the "New Lead Belt". The ore body lies at an elevation of 270 feet above sea level, and is fairly flat lying, becoming slightly deeper toward the south. The mineralization is due to the secondary deposition of galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, calcite, dolomite and some localized drusy quartz in a country rock of dolomitic limestone. The galena is fairly coarse grained with some large crystaline structure, and some oxidized surfaces. The sphalerite is fine grained- small crystals containing Cd (about 0.7%) and Ag (about 10 oz per ton) in solid solution. The chalcopyrite is fine grained, fine crystals that are sometimes massive in nature. The mine plan is a modified room and pillar system. Broken ore at the mine face will be transported to several different ore passes by rubber tired load-haul-dump units. Ore passes will drop the ore to a rail haulage level some 90 feet below the mining level where bottom dump cars will deliver it to a 42 in. Nordberg gyratory crusher. Two 12 ton capacity skips in balance carry the ore some 1,200 feet to the surface. The hoist is equipped with automatic controls for loading, hoisting and unloading.

THE discussion of this topic at the Open-hearth Conference at Detroit on Nov. 3, 1927, was opened by statements of the general principles involved, made by manufacturers of molds. Because of their general interest they are printed below. WILLIAM HAIL RAMAGE,* Hubbard, Ohio.-I did not come prepared to read a paper, thinking. the most I would be called upon to do would be to make a few, remarks by way of discussion. A number of our friends have pre-viously asked questions. similar to this which really does not permit a direct "yes" or "no" answer. If I may he pardoned for so doing, I believe it advisable to discuss rather what we consider the principal factors which in-fluence mold life. I think possibly a little undue weight has been given to the subject of the analysis of the metal. For the last eight years we have spent a lot of time, effort, and money investigating this very problem from a chemical, physical and microscopic standpoint. We have had the benefit of complete records and history of over 100,000 molds in service at a variety of plants and over long periods of time. Obviously, I cannot be so specific that I should divulge information that is really a trade secret. In our opinion the principal factors influencing mold life are: (1) design of the mold; (2) process of manu-facture, including workmanship; (3) care in the steel plant or what might be termed "the use or abuse" in the steel plant; (4) the analysis of the iron and the physical con-dition of it. Under normal conditions these factors are of importance in the order named, although in specific cases they might be rearranged in any order you choose. For instance, the best mold made can be destroyed in one or two pours by subjecting it to certain conditions which are occasion-ally met in steel plant practice. Obviously, in that case, nothing else matters but that one item. On the other hand, I have seen molds made of such a terrible design that it was a foregone conclusion it would have to be broken after the second pour of the ingot to get it out. In that case, nothing but design mattered. As to the effect of process of manufacture, let me cite a case. Some years ago there were two batches of molds sent to a certain company. They were the same sized molds, used under the same conditions and in the same kind of service. There were, 20 molds in each batch. The second batch sent gave ten times the life of the first batch. It is true that the design was changed a little, but not very much, and it was not. a bad mold to begin with. It is possible that the iron may have been better in the second consignment but not very much. In my opinion, it is con-servative to say that of the 900 per cent improvement in life, 5 per cent was probably due to better iron, 25 per cent to better design and the remaining 870 per cent to process of manufacture and workmanship.

A series of rare earth cobalt compounds of the composition RCoa (r = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Ev, Tm, Lu) has been prepared. The compounds crystallize in space gvoup R3m and are isomorphous with PuNi3. Except for CeCo3 and PrCo, the series shows decreasing- values of a. and co. The relalively small parameters of CeCo, and PrCo, are explained by valencies of cerium or praseodymium which exceed the usual rare earth valency of three. The structure of the compounds is discussed as in-fillings of kagome nets in direct and staggered superposition. In the course of a systematic investigation of rare earth cobalt compounds"2 and their magnetic properties,, a series of alloys corresponding to the formula Rco3 has been prepared. The investigation of the Rco3 series was stimulated by our investigation of the yttrium cobalt system2 as well as by reports in the literature: Smith and Hansen4 reported the structure of YcO3 and Van vucht5 that of GdCo3; ceco3,6 Gdco3,7 and DyCo3 7 have been found to be single-phase during phase diagram studies. It was the purpose of this work to report crystallographic data on the entire Rco3 series and to interpret the structure of these compounds on the basis of general principles as discussed by Frank and Kasper.8 At the time this work was terminated, it was learned that a similar investigation has been carried out independently by Bertaut, Lemaire, and schweizer.9 Except for CeCo3 (ao = 4.952, co = 24.73') and NdCo3 (a0 = 5.067, co = 24.76') data of this work are in satisfactory agreement with their investigation. Cost evaluations were made for five processes for producing 100,000 tons of electrorefined copper per year from a chalcopyrite concentrate. The processes were (1) conventional smelting with all furnace gases vented to the atmosphere; (2) conventional smelting with converter gases routed to an acid plant and reverberatory gases vented to the atmosphere; (3) conventional smelting with converter gases routed to an acid plant and reverberatory gases to a citrate system plant; (4) conventional smelting with all furnace gases routed to a citrate system plant; and (5) a modified smelting process in which the concentrate is roasted before being charged to the reverberatory furnace, with roaster and converter gases routed to an acid plant. The total fixed capital costs of the plants were estimated as (1) $56.7 million, (2) $77.4 million, (3) $87.2 million, (4) $73.9 million, and (5) $77.0 million, respectively. Total S02 removal from stack gases as sulfuric acid or sulfur for each process was (1) none, (2) 66 percent, (3) 99 percent, (4) 98 percent, and (5) 78 percent. Assuming no credit for byproduct sulfur or sulfuric acid, total operating costs per pound of electro-refined copper produced were estimated as (1) $0.081, (2) $0.103, (3) $0.119, (4) $0.111, and (5) $0.103, respectively.

A laboratory investigation of the behavior of casing subjected to salt loading indicates that it is not economically feasible to design casing for the most severe situations of nonuniform loading. When the annulus is completely filled with cement, casing is subjected to a nearly uniform loading approximately equal to the overburden pressure, and, although the modes of failure may be different, the design of casing to withstand uniform salt pressure can be computed on the same basis as the design of casing to withstand fluid pressure. Failure of casing by nonuniform loading in inadequately cemented washed-out salt sections should be considered a cementing problem rather than a casing design problem. INTRODUCTION Casing failures in salt zones have created an interest in understanding the behavior of casing subjected to salt loading. The designer must know the magnitudes and types of loading to be expected from salt flow and he must be able to calculate the reaction of the casing to these loads. In the laboratory study reported in this paper, short-time experimental measurements of the load required to force steel cylinders into rock salt are used as a basis for computing the salt loading on casing. These results must be considered to be qualitative only since rock salt behaves differently under down-hole and atmospheric conditions and also may vary in strength at different locations. The beneficial effects of (1) cement around casing, (2) a liner cemented inside of casing, and (3) fluid pressure inside of casing in resisting casing failure are considered. ROCK SALT BEHAVIOR UNDER STRESS The effects of such factors as overburden loading, internal fluid pressure, and temperature on the flow of salt around cavities have been studied extensively at The U. of Texas. Brown, et al.1 have concluded that an opening in rock salt can reach a stable equilibrium if the formation stress is less than 3,000 psi and the temperature is less than 300°F. At higher temperatures and pressures an opening in salt can close completely. These results indicate that calculations based upon elastic and plastic equilibrium for an open hole in salt should be applied only at depths less than 3,000 ft. In most oil wells the tem- perature will be less than 300F in the salt sections, therefore no appreciable temperature effects are anticipated. Serata and Gloyna2 have reported an investigation of the structural stability of salt. .They assume that the major principal stress is due to the overburden. Other stresses can be superimposed if additional lateral pressures are known to be acting in a particular region. In the present analysis an isotropic state of stress is assumed to exist in the salt before the hole is drilled, since salt regions are generally at rest. This assumption is partially verified from formation breakdown pressure data taken during squeeze-cementing operations in salt. Experimental measurements of the elastic properties of rock salt indicate a value of 150,000 psi for Young's modulus and a value of approximately 0.5 for Poisson's ratio. A value of % for Poison's ratio with finite Young's modulus would indicate that the material was incompressible. Values ranging from 2,300 to 5,000 psi have been reporteda for the unconfined compressive strength of salt. These variations may be due to differences in the properties of the salt from different locations or at least partially to differences in testing techniques. Salt is very ductile, even under relatively low confining pressures. For example, in triaxial tests reported by Handin3 strains in excess of 20 to 30 per cent were obtained without fracture. When casing is cemented in a hole through a salt section, the casing must withstand a load from the formation if plastic flow of the salt is prevented. To determine the forces which salt can impose on casing, circular steel rods were forced into Hockley rocksalt with the longitudinal axis of the rods parallel to the surface of the salt. The force required to embed rods 0.2 to I in. in diameter and 1/2 to 1 in. long to a depth equal to the radius of the rods was found to be F/DL =28,700 psi (± 3,700 psi) , .... (1) where D is the diameter, and L is the length of the rod. CASING STRESSES Since an open borehole through salt at depths greater than 3,000 ft will tend to close, cemented casing which prevents closure of the hole will be subjected to a pressure approximately equal to the horizontal formation stress after a sufficiently long time. As a first approximation the horizontal stress can be assumed to be equal to the overburden pressure. This is in agreement with the suggestion by Texter4 that an adequate cement job can prevent plastic flow of salt and result in a pressure on the casing approximately equal to the overburden pressure. According to Arbiter (Reference 1), the ball mill was invented by Brückner in Germany in 1876 and was first used in the United States on ores about 1905. The basic concept was a simple rotating cylindrical drum in which the tumbling action of the charge of material and grinding media resulted in size reduction of the material. Despite the very low mechanical efficiency of this method a number of factors have caused the tumbling mill to remain, by far, the most widely used piece of equipment for mineral grinding. The principal factors influencing this situation have been simplicity of design, ease of manufacture, ready adaptability to familiar material handling layouts and the absence of practical alternatives acceptable to the industry. In the early mills, the material was ground in batches, the mills being charged and discharged through doors in the shell. The shell was supported by means of solid trunnion shafts resting in plain bearings and the drive was accomplished through one of these shafts. In some later batch mills, the mill shell was supported on rollers which were also used to drive the mill. At an early stage, continuous operation was made possible by feeding and discharging the mill through hollow trunnions, the method still in most widespread use. The mechanical and structural design of the early mills was not an onerous engineering task. Norse sense and good practical knowledge were key qualifications. The mill shells had to be heavy enough to withstand the physical abuse they would receive in the field and the bearings had to have low enough unit pressures and sufficient wear retol to ensure several months of operation before the need for replacement occurred. When these requirements were satisfied, stresses developed in the equipment during operation were insignificant and the majority of structural failures were probably due to the use of inferior materials in manufacture. Over the years, the ever present demand for increased productivity has resulted in a steady Increase in the size of units of production equipment, including grinding mills.
