In a continental environment, sediment mobilisation, dispersion and deposition are mainly controlled by mass gravity and streamflow processes. Alluvial sedimentary systems have an important economic value because of their capacity to host mineral resources. In the Hamersley Province, alluvial iron deposits (including the well-known detrital iron deposits and channel iron deposits) play an increasing role on the commodity market. Alluvial deposits exploration is challenging and generally involves geomorphologic and stratigraphic field studies, as well as expensive exploratory surface sampling and drilling. We applied a new surface processes modelling technique to investigate iron rich material, ie the erosion product of bedded iron formations -dispersion in the Hamersley Province. LECODE is a 3D-parallel surface processes forward modelling code designed to compute surface flow and solve erosion, transport and sedimentation on the geological time scale. The code offers new quantitative ways to better understand how sedimentary deposits develop in intra-continental and channel environments. Here we show that our integrated forward model is capable of opening a window to the construction of sedimentary architectures, including facies distribution, deposit thickness and development of heterogeneities such as mineral traps over the modelled domain. The model results represent 1 Ma of surface evolution and are validated through comparison to published paleovalleys map and known occurrences of iron ore deposits. This numerical modelling approach allows for the first time to track alluvial materials from source to sink through time, test existing geological models and faithfully reproduce the first order distribution of alluvial iron deposits in an area of interest. This work strongly suggests the presence of iron rich alluvial deposits reserves under cover, in unexplored detrital fans in the Fortescue Valley. This method, potentially coupled with sediment geochemistry and basin analyses studies, has the potential to maximise alluvial iron deposits exploration success, while reducing exploration cost and associated environmental impact.CITATION:Duclaux, G, Salles, T and Ramanaidou, E R, 2013. This study presents a typical stress-strain model for coal material using the available in-situ and laboratory tests data conducted on coal. This model can be used as a basic coal model in finite element applications The effects of pillar width-to-height ratio and the confining pressure have been considered in this model. The extended Drucker-Prager model with mobilized friction angle was found to be very successful in simulating the proposed model.

A DIGHEM survey was flown in the Belford-Montcalm Township area of Ontario in November 1975. This 600-linemile survey resulted in the detection of 134 EM anomalies. The Montcalm Township copper-nickel discovery yielded a single-line anomaly having a conductance of 154 mhos. This anomaly was highly visible because (a) it had the highest conductance in the survey area, (b) it correlated with a 175-gamma thumbprint-shaped magnetic anomaly and (c) it was isolated from long conductive bands. The deposit is a copper-nickel pyrrhotite body which occurs in gabbro and strikes north-south, parallel to the flight lines. The DIGHEM survey was flown north-south, because the exploration program was primarily concerned with locating copper-zinc sulphides in the east-west-striking felsic volcanics. The flight line passed close to the deposit and yielded a 9-ppm anomaly on the chart record. The computer analysis showed that a deposit of exceptionally high conductance (154 mhos) caused the relatively weak (9 ppm) anomaly. The ground follow-up program of magnetics and EM led quickly to the discovery drill hole, which penetrated the orebody in September 1976. Subsequent geophysical surveys consisted of horizontal-loop EM, pulse EM, magnetic and induced polarization surveys over an area of about 8 claims. In addition, a detailed DIGHEM" airborne survey was flown at a line spacing of 100 m to evaluate the entire property of 620 claims. This detailed survey yielded EM conductor maps and contour maps of resistivity, magnetics and enhanced magnetics.

In the, quest for an economical and environmentally friendly reclamation of metallurgical dusts generated during pyrometallurgical operations, our goal has been the separation and recovery of most of the components, as well as the complete recycle of all the reagents. Effluents have been avoided, within acceptable economic parameters. This presentation, which can be applied to a large spectrum of dusts and other residual-materials-, has focused on the dusts generated by the operation of Secondary Copper Smelters. Those dusts show a wide range of components, including zinc, lead-, copper, cadmium, tin, chlorine and-alkalies. Our present work deals with the use of ammonium salts in the separation and recovery of-the above mentioned elements in a marketable form. Most of the chemistry and techniques involved have teen already confirmed in commercial scale operations. Others have gone through pilot scale tests or bench scale tests. The recycle of reagents has also been- confirmed at the same operating levels. A preliminary evaluation indicates that the chosen route, in addition to a viable economy, offers a complete and safe reclamation within the most strict environmental regulations.

Face and pillar bursts, bumps and bounces are violent failures that occur in underground coal mines in response to a complicated interplay of face and pillar geometry, seam depth, coal properties and interactions between roof, seam and floor strata. Additional complications arise from the presence of gas, mainly methane, and associated pressure and flow that vary with time and are further influenced by the rate of face advance. Where gas plays a dominant role, the term outburst is often used; where stress concentration is primary, terms such as burst, bump or bounce may be used. Hargraves [1983] presents an often cited review of outburst phenomena with emphasis on Australian conditions. Beamish and Crosdale [1998] indicate outbursts have occurred for over a hundred years and present tabulations of outburst numbers in major coal basins throughout the world. A central consideration is the rate of depressurization that occurs in the course of mining. Outbursts are not limited to coal seams and adjacent strata; they also occur in salt and potash mines [Molinda et al 1988]. Stress concentration and gas pressure act in consort, so the combined action is important to understanding the mechanics of bursts or outbursts and to the development of measures to reduce the associated hazard. Gas flow is a complicated phenomenon associated with diffusion of gas from micro-pores and the flow of gas along cleats. Laboratory measurements indicate both are dependent on stress and pressure [Harpalani and Ouyang 1998]. Moreover, gas permeability in porous media is often many times water permeability [Klinkenberg 1941]. However, there is also evidence that gas and water permeability are similar at elevated stress and follow Darcy?s law [Dabous et al]. Gas flow is also of importance to mine ventilation. Price et al [1973] in cooperation with personnel of the former U.S. Bureau of Mines developed finite difference models to estimate methane emission in mines in the Pocahontas No. 3 and Pittsburg seams using a premining pressure of 4.69 MPa (680 psi) and Darcy's law implying laminar flow. However, the effects of stress were not taken into account. In this regard, mine measurements of permeability are usually based on Darcy?s law [Peide 1990]. Early models of gas flow with stress effects were one-dimensional in space and time (x,t) and were developed with the goal of estimating the gas pressure profile from the face into the seam as time passed [Schlanger and Paterson 1987, Zou and Yu, 1999]. A zone of high permeability adjacent to the mining face was recognized in these early models. Later models based on the popular finite element method allowed two spatial dimensions (x,y) and variation in time (t) and for coal seam heterogeneity [Tang et al, 2002]. Zhu et al [2007] formulated a set of nonlinear equations involving a complicated stress-pressure-permeability relationship for application to coal seam gas flow and concluded the coupling was important but failure of coal should also be considered. Wold et al [2008] used a hybrid finite difference - finite element model interleaved with a reservoir simulation model to study outbursts based on extensive mine and laboratory measurements. An important feature of the modeling was the use of spatially variable material properties and Monte Carlo simulation to obtain quantitative estimates of outburst conditions and probabilities. Connell [2009] used the same reservoir simulation model as Wold but used the popular finite difference code FLAC3D for hydro-mechanical responses to evaluate two permeability relationships, one depending on porosity and the other on stress, and concluded that permeability changes with gas production were more complex than computed by either permeability model. Gadde [2010] in an integrated laboratory and field study of coal pillar strength explored the effect of spatial variability and concluded that design based on average strength was acceptable in some circumstances, although gas pressure was not an issue. Liu et al [2011] also applied a FLAC code to analyze two-dimensional gas flow and deformation of layered but homogeneous strata in a Chinese coal mine using a strain-softening model and concluded that damage and gas pressure were important to strata safety relative to the case without gas.

LOCATION THE Ozark region occupies a large part of the southern half, of Missouri, the northern portion of Arkansas and comparatively small areas in northeast Oklahoma, southwest Kansas, and southern Illinois. . It is a roughly elliptical plateau which has been deeply dissected by stream erosion, and which slopes imperceptibly into the prairie regions to the north, east, and west, but which terminates rather abruptly along the Arkansas River on the south and Tertiary lowland to the southeast. The-Boston Mountains extending for a distance of some 200 miles (321 -km.) along the Arkansas River rise to an elevation of 2000 ft. (609 m.), forming the most prominent topographic feature of the region. The so-called St. Francois Mountains in St. Francois, Madison, and adjoining counties in southeast Missouri, form a prominent but more restricted topographic feature, the highest point rising to an elevation of 1800 ft. (548 m.).. The remainder of the region is largely a plateau area varying from 800 to 1500 ft. (243 to 457 m.) in elevation. STRATIGRAPHY The region is underlain chiefly by sedimentary formations, which outcrop in roughly concentric bands around a comparatively restricted area of igneous rocks in the St. Francois Mountain district. Although located geographically near the eastern edge of the Ozarks, the St. Francois Mountains have apparently suffered the greatest orogenic movement and the lowest formations of the succession are exposed in their immediate vicinity. The various sedimentary formations of the region do not show any considerable metamorphism and have suffered little change since consolidation. With the exception of a few basic intrusions in Ste. Genevieve County and a pegmatite dike in Camden County, Missouri, there is no evidence of igneous-action, since the first sedimentary beds were deposited.

In many areas surrounding the orebodies in mining districts rocks have been bleached and altered by the ore-forming solutions and have been oxidized during later weathering processes. A number of the rock-forming silic-ates have been broken down to clay, sericitic micas and chlorites have been developed, and pyrite may be found hundreds of feet outside the economic limits of the orebody. These halos of altered ground are prime targets used by geologists in many districts to delineate promising sites for drilling. Both in the field and in the laboratory it is often difficult to map these mineralogical changes in the halos in detail without numerous petrologic examinations. The secondary minerals are generally fine-grained, and since conversion of one mineral to another is often progressive, many alteration processes have not proceeded to completion (feldspars to clay to sericite mica). Qualitative detection of these minerals is difficult; quantitative determination is frequently impossible.

With the revolutionary progress in information and computer technologies, applying the latest information technologies in metallurgical complexes has become a serious challenge to both a major opportunity and a serious challenge to both management and technical teams. The emerging component and object technologies are changing the way everyone can beneficially use their computer and networks to add to their corporate bottom lines. Most mining and metallurgical plants use predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis and special techniques, like vibration analysis and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. Process control strategies are installed in several metallurgical sites. All process equipment and control strategies require maintenance from local personnel at the mine. Integrated use of existing and emerging technologies is making it possible to implement an overall process effectiveness control index. This index is based on key indices such as losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency and rate of quality. The availability of real time and process history to identify the most critical part of the processing system from mechanical integrity is highlighted. An emerging plant integration paradigm is described to simplify the implementation of business enterprise resources management and distributed plant management systems.

Adaptive re-use of existing structures in urban environments has become very common due to lack of available space in our cities and requirements for increased structural capacity. Often, it involves retrofitting existing foundations to support increased loading. In such cases, Engineers face the need to review existing deep or shallow foundations for their true load carrying capacities in order to determine the required magnitude of retrofit work, if any. To accomplish this, the engineer must track down and cull through the existing construction documentation to determine what was actually constructed, complete an investigation to confirm these conclusions, possibly sample the foundation elements for strength properties, and on occasions complete non destructive or full scale load testing of indicator elements. This paper describes the typical procedure followed by the authors for design of retrofit schemes for existing buildings in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Three case histories are presented that illustrate various issues encountered during design.

These days of great industrial and social problems in America produce many suggested solutions and great changes. The practical engineer and employer of labor views these problems differently from the labor leader or the social reformer, but as never before he is sincerely interested in solving them in a way that will be just to all. The inevitable tendency of the day is toward "industrial betterment," " safety," '(industrial education," " efficiency," and the many other things which have become so familiar to progressive employers. There is no longer any question that these things are worth while from both the human and economic standpoints. They "pay" in dollars and cents. The very center of final success in improving conditions and increasing the efficiency of workingmen must be the spirit of fairness and a knowledge on the part of the employer of how to deal sympathetically and intelligently with his employees. Every progressive employer knows how greatly he desires foremen, superintendents, managers and others who possess these qualities. On the other hand, we are all familiar with serious mistakes made by young graduates of engineering schools who have had no opportunity to develop these qualities, and who have no real appreciation of the worth of the workers. Indeed, one wonders whether much ill-feeling, labor difficulties, and many strikes could not be avoided if such men had the right attitude. Is there any way of remedying this condition? If this particular difficulty can be solved, if these young engineers, many of whom are our coming leaders of industry, can be given the right perspective and the right understanding of these other problems in addition to fair, sympathetic methods of handling men, many of our other problems will be solved—not at once, but gradually and permanently, as these men make good and become influential in paths of industrial righteousness and industrial peace. Many progressive employers of to-day have enlarged their own perspective and realize the great importance of enlarging the perspective of those who shall follow them. How can it be done? I. A. Sirel—I would like to ask Mr. Sims what would the preferred hot metal analysis be as far as manganese and silicon are concerned if you used specially made iron for this process instead of basic iron. C. E. Sims (authors' reply)—A preferred composition would contain somewhat less silicon than the basic pig iron used in these experiments. High silicon requires a large lime addition. Lime must be added in sufficient quantity to neutralize the silica formed and to leave an excess for dephosphorization. Manganese presents almost no problem in operation. It is almost completely oxidized and, in burning, develops considerable heat. The evidence indicates, however, that, in continuous commercial operation, there will be an excess of heat produced, and the bath will need to be cooled in some manner as by the addition of scrap or by utilizing the energy for the direct reduction of ore. There do not seem to be any serious limitations on composition of pig iron. One heat was made with an iron containing 2.27 pct silicon and the phosphorus finished at 0.007 pct. In another, the iron contained 0.45 pct phosphorus which was lowered to 0.019 pct. This indicates considerable leeway in composition. D. R. Loughrey—We are all very much interested in the recent discovery of very large deposits of iron ore both in Labrador and in Venezuela. I would like to ask Mr. Sims if the iron ore at either or both of these places is such that it would lend itself to the manufacture of iron suitable for use in the turbohearth. C. E. Sims-—According to my information, those ores are not essentially different from ores now used in this country for making basic pig. They should, therefore, be adaptable to this process. D. I. Brown—You have spoken about the leeway, or spread in analysis of the various irons you can use in the vessel. I would like to have you tell us, if you can, about the different kinds of steels which can be made in such a vessel. The turbohearth process, or it might more aptly be called pneumatic openhearth, is a little different from that used in most Bessemer shops and in the one in which I worked. Hargraves (1983) has reviewed the phenomenon of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas with special attention to Australian occurrences. The purpose of this discussion is to highlight some problems and omissions in his review that reflect particularly on the authors' structural geological investigations of outburst-prone coal seams.It is surprising to find that much of the authors' reported work has either been glossed over or the results distorted by Hargraves (1983) and it is, therefore, important to clarify the contribution that structural analysis of coal seams can make.For many years it has been known that faults provided preferred loci for gas outbursts (for example, Briggs 1920-21) but the roie that faults played in outburstprone seams was unclear. The present authors reviewed the association of faults and outbursts drawing upon local investigations and the world-wide literature (Shepherd et aI., 1981), and discussed some wideranging aspects that result from the high coincidence of faults and outburst sites. Without repeating large segments of this article the authors will discuss four aspects of coal seam faulting and fracturing.

Six new IsaMills were installed for the George Fisher flowsheet in the Lead/Zinc Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines to produce a product P80 as fine as seven microns. The objective was better liberation of galena and sphalerite. The IsaMill commissioning was completed by the end of 1999. The six new IsaMills were running to the metallurgical specifications almost immediately after start-up. This paper reports the performance of the George Fisher IsaMills in the zinc circuits and some of the latest development in the IsaMill designs and maintenance during George Fisher commissioning.

Bacterial oxidation, previously known as bacterial leaching or bio-leaching, has been applied at laboratory and pilot plant scale to many refractory ores and concentrates around the world. The most common bacterial culture used in this process has been Thiobacillus sp. This organism is limited in commercial application, especially in Australia for several reasons. The optimum operating temperature range for this culture is 30¦C to 40¦C and high levels of some metals such as arsenic, silver, and copper have toxic effects on the culture thus reducing its effectiveness. The culture employed by BacTech (Australia) Pty lid is a moderately thermophilic culture which operates in a temperature range of 40¦C to 55¦C (which is more amenable to the Australian climate) and with higher resistance levels to metals often found to be toxic to Thiobacillus sp..

Engineering design involves, in addition to numerical calculations, considerable amount of expertise and judgement. The expertise and judgement is required to conceptualize and idealize the problem, select a suitable mathematical model for the problem and to interpret the model results in terms of stipulated design constraints. In recent years, knowledge based systems (KBS) have provided the capability to integrate the qualitative experiential and expert knowledge with the quantitative knowledge for improved analysis and design of systems. A possible KBS architecture for mine ventilation system design was discussed by Ramani and Prasad (1987). The expert system (ES) component of the KBS supports the analysis and interpretation phases of the ventilation design process with an algorithmic program used for the solution of alternate designs. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the data and knowledge needs for developing such a system and a formal means of their representation on the computer. A number of ES shells were evaluated to explore possible development and delivery environments for the system. A brief summary of this evaluation is also provided.

Accidents to men employed in the quarrying and related industries of the United States were more numerous, absolutely and relatively, in 1937 than in 1936. Fortunately, the entire increase was in the category of nonfatal injuries, as accidents causing death declined in number and in proportion to the number of man-hours worked. Employment increased. More men were employed, more man-days and man-hours were worked, and the average employee had more hours of work than in 1936. Reports covering all commercial operations showed that 84,094 men were employed an increase of 5.1 percent over 1936. The number of man-hours of work performed by the industry was, 158 millions, an increase of 7.6 percent. Seventy-seven men were killed by accidents, a, reduction of 14 from the year before, and 6,348 men were injured and disabled for more than the remainder of the day on which the accident occurred, 11 percent more than in 1936. The fatality rate of 0.49 per million man-hours of exposure in 1937 compared favorably with the rate of 0.62 for the previous year, whereas the non-fatal-injury rate of 40.10 was 3.2 percent higher than the rate of 38.87 for 1936.

Microscope, electron microprobe and x-ray diffraction have been used to provide quantitative evaluation of products from the mill, smelter, refinery and other metallurgical processes. Phase compositions and their quantities are necessary for an adequate understanding of the various products obtained throughout an operation and in laboratory testing. By careful evaluation, important information can be gained in improving recoveries and increasing grades at various stages of processing. Four case histories are discussed in this paper. Quantitative microscopic counting techniques are applied to mill products to determine degrees of locking and liberation of the economic minerals. Rapid, but accurate evaluation aids the metallurgist to develop or improve the grinding and flotation circuits. In the smelter, the identification and quantification of the phases are important for predicting reaction mechanisms and kinetic trends. Mineralogic techniques have been applied to conventional smelter products, and to those obtained in laboratory tests for newly developed innovations to smelting. Small, but important, values of gold occurrences in ore are difficult to determine. Evaluation of gold usually requires special separations into various mineral concentrates, followed by assays and mineralogic determinations of the products. Numerous occurrences of solid solution constituents can be treated as by-products, but often they are deleterious to metallurgical treatment. Most solid solution problems can be unraveled by the mineralogist's tools.

Due to high crack sensitivity of slab product of gas and oil line pipe application, its steel making process and alloy composition were evaluated and then improved to overcome its critical solidification process and reduced surface defects. The study was conducted at Slab Steel Plant Krakatau Steel. The purpose was to improve slab surface quality by reducing surface defects so that the slab surface doesn't need to be totally repaired. The method applied was by performing plant trial process, which the secondary process parameters such as alloying method and the casting parameters such as casting powder selection, metallurgical cooling, mould level control, and superheat were continuously monitored and then adjusted to the surface quality of the product. Based on the calculation of Ferrite potential of the steel, the chemical composition was designed to achieve optimum casting parameters in order to avoid high shrinkage during solidification. The results of the study are decreased surface defect quantity, and smooth casting process. The quantity of crack decreased by almost 90%. The slab surface repairing was significantly reduced from 85. % to less than 10%. These new casting parameters and developed alloy composition are then used and standardized for the mass production of the steel.

"THE SUBJECT of permanent molding has received a great deal of attention in the technical press as illustrated by the many excellent articles in the bibliography which follows. In general, this covers the period 1940-1958 and is merely representative of what is available. Numbers in •brackets refer to items in the bibliography.It may be desirable at the outset to give a few definitions covering those terms directly related to this subject. The following is a definition of permanent-mold casting as given by J. W. Meier in a paper, ""The Non-Ferrous Metals and Alloys"", read before the Ottawa Valley Chapt.er of the American Society for Metals:""Permanent Mold Casting is used where a large number of castings of the same part are required and higher mechanical properties, greater density and closer tolerances are essential. Since metallic mold s are very expensive, the number of castings must be sufficient to, defray, at least partially, the added expense. Molds are usually made from a good quality cast iron, 1but other mold materials, such as the aluminum and copper alloys, graphite, ceramics, etc., are being used in certain cases. Important factors in permanent mold casting are the mold temperature; the proper mold dressing; and, as in all other casting methods, the mold geometry, that is to say, the design of spruces, gates, risers and vents""."
