"Excavation, the principal mining process, 'which hitherto has been based largely on the intuition and logic of mining men, is increasingly receiving the attention of engineers and scientists versed in rock mechanics. The paper intro-duce the principles of this science in simplified form, directed both to underground and open-pit mining. Reference is made to the large annual tonnage from ore and rock excavations, which in 1967 were responsible for 250 million tons of mineral production in Canada.The urge to transform excavation into a continuous instead of an interrupted process is discussed with references to the various types of energies employed or proposed in rock breakage or excavation. Due to the rapid decay of applied energy in the discontinuous and heterogeneous rock environment, large confined blasts proposed for in-situ mining do not give much expectation of success as yet. Raises and ventilating shafts are already bored in reasonably hard rock. Tunnelling machines will be used for drifting and cross-cutting in the future, but continuous mining machines of the cuttmg and shearing type are not 'around the corner' for stoping typical orebodies. On the other hand, bed mining, particularly of coal, has led the way in continuous mining, and Remotely Operated Long-wall Face (ROLF) experiments are progressing in an encouraging way. Some reflections on the mining environment in relation to the human element are made."

Recently a mining analyst for a major bank called me to say that during his travels he had encountered an electric utility interested in a new uranium supply. Since we produce uranium as a by-product of phosphate operations rather than as a primary product, he assumed we simply sold our output in the spot market and that a new prospective purchaser would be of interest to us. This assumption was incorrect; the uranium had already been sold on a long term basis at terms more favorable than the currently depressed spot market. From the outset our approach to the marketing of uranium was based on the principle that by-product marketing is not unlike primary product marketing. This was particularly appropriate in the case of uranium, as we were planning a considerable technical and capital commitment to a new business. This illustrates: that the fundamental principle in by-product marketing is to follow a primary product strategy; that the terms "by-product" or "co-product" are creations of accountants; that they have no place in marketing decisions! Traditionally, the term "by-product" has implied that only a secondary marketing effort is required. Recent history has contradicted that view by demonstrating that by-product values can have marked impact on a mine's revenues and costs. In fact, by-product values can spell the difference between success and failure.

This month, Tax Notes examines tax legislation from a different angle, and sees some bright spots.The following article is based on a paper presented by the author at the International Gold Symposium in Rio de Janeiro in August 1989Introduction""No man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the Legislature is in session.”With one federal government, ten provincial governments, and two territorial governments all claiming to have constitutional rights to tax and otherwise regulate Canada's mining industry, and with each of these thirteen governments pursuing their respective rights with some vigor, government involvement in one way or another is an accepted way of life in the industry. While one's initial reaction to government involvement in an industry might be one of scepticism or fear, generally speaking the federal, provincial, and territorial governments in Canada tend to be pro-mining. They recognize the importance of the mining industry to Canada, especially in terms of job creation and exports. It is not surprising, then, to find that an array of valuable fiscal incentives are available to the industry through federal and provincial legislation.This paper summarizes the principal incentives that are inherent in Canada's tax legislation, as well as the Canadian Exploration Incentive Program. Although it is beyond the scope of this paper to deal with all of the incentives that are available, it is noted that various forms of federal or provincial assistance are also available outside of specific legislation, through negotiation with government departments. This latter type of assistance is generally directed toward helping with the cost of infrastructure such as roads or hydro lines, or Jess often toward loan guarantees or similar financing assistance."

"Abstract Application of soil displacement screw pile (known as SDS pile) has been experiencing accelerated growth in Chinese deep foundation industry because of its technical advantages, environmental benefits, and cost effective as well. As bored displacement piling, SDS piles are able to perform better than non-displacement piling such as CFA plies due to changing the stress state in the soil around SDS piles during the installation. Therefore the design methods between the conventional pile type and SDS pile type have some differences. Based on the methodology research, current Chinese piling rigs, displacement augers and piling projects are introduced, and the current design approaches for SDS piles in China are also described. Moreover, the design results are verified by using full scale load tests, and a part of the research results of SDS piling system acquired in China are presented.IntroductionThe Continuous Flight Auger Pile, also known as the CFA pile, has occupied about 22% in the pile market all over the world (Van Impe, 2004; Bottiau, 2006). The CFA piles are usually used for large diameter (600mm~1200mm) pile foundations and deep excavation projects. Whereas the small size CFA piles (400mm~500mm) are mainly applied for composite foundations in China. In the past 10 years, the new technology of soil displacement screw piling has been applied worldwide (Prezzi et al., 2005). And it is also extensively used for high-rise buildings, industrial plants and railway projects in China (shown in Figure 1)."

Microorganisms in AMD (Acid Mine Drainage) were enriched in 9K culture medium. The enrichment was applied to leach copper pyrite after the microbial community structure and metabolism was stable. Before and after bioleaching, the microbial DNA was extracted and applied to RFLP (restricted fragment length polymorphism) analysis to demonstrate the relationship between the leaching efficiency and the change of microbial community. Atomic absorption spectrometry results showed that when concentration of the pulp was 10% and pH were 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5, the leaching rate were 56%, 57% and 34% on the 18th day respectively. These results indicated that the rise of pH resulted in the decrease of leaching rate. In lower pH condition, the growth of microbe was faster: when pH was 1.5, the microbial cell number reached to 1.4×107cells/mL on the 9th day; while pH was 2.5, the microbial cell number decreased to 4×106cells/mL. The analysis of microbial community structure showed that Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans were dominant species before bioleaching (account for 43% and 32% respectively). And after bioleaching, these two species were still dominant when the initial bioleaching pH were1.5 and 2.0. While the initial bioleaching pH was 2.5, the proportion of these two species decreased. These results demonstrated that the initial bioleaching pH would affect the microbial community structure in bioleaching system at room temperature, and this affect could lead to different copper pyrites bioleaching efficiency.

The availability of a thorough, simple-to-use roof fall classification system is desirable for several reasons. First, such a system would expedite the reporting of falls for the purposes of estimating material removal costs, analyzing damage levels, and complying with federal regulations to report falls in certain areas of the mine. "This generic study has been developed in response to the frequently asked question, ""That is the best treatment route for refractory gold ore?"". The study has developed operating and capital costs for many potential treatment routes and they are presented here in a generic form. All costs are in relation to the value of 1.00 given to the base case, a 1000 mtpd bio-oxidation plant, operating at 25% solids and 72 hours residence time.There is unfortunately no simple answer to the above quest ions. The treatment of refractory ores is a complex subject, with many variables, such as mineralogy, chemistry, environment and tonnage. However this study does offer information and relative numbers that we believe will be of assistance to gold metallurgists in obtaining a ""first shot"" at estimating costs.Equally, this technology is a rapidly evolving one. As more plants are commissioned, and test programs completed, better data is constantly being generated. For a generic study of this type to remain useful it will need regular updating and adjustment."

Increasing soil organic matter was considered to be an important factor for the establishment of vegetative cover in abandoned quarries of perlite and bentonite in the island of Milos. For this reason, the feasibility of composting local organic wastes and by-products for use as a soil amendment was examined in this study. A mixture of organic wastes of vegetative origin and seaweed, in proportions that correspond to local material availability, was composted in laboratory scale reactors and the composting progress and compost quality were evaluated. Temperature, airflow and respiration rate were continuously monitored and various compost quality parameters, such as C/N ratio, nitrate nitrogen and seed germination were analysed. Addition of inorganic nitrogen was necessary for the biodegradation of the substrate, while the main problem for the compost utilisation was related to its high electrical conductivity, characteristic of seaweed containing mixtures, which further increased with nitrogen addition.

The fragmentation distribution of the blasted ore is an important descriptor of blasting results. Traditionally it has been hard to measure quantitatively. Developments in image analysis over several years makes it more feasible to measure fragmentation before crushing on a continuous basis. Post crushing, mill feed distributions can also be measured.

THE subject of transverse fissures in steel rails has been discussed very thoroughly in recent years from various points of view and the final opinions expressed may be roughly classified into two groups: (1) That these fissures are the result merely of fatigue of the steel and are independent of the quality of the metal. (2) That the quality of the metal and the mill practice must have something to do with them. The first point of view was most-ably and logically presented by J. E. Howard,1 and in the discussion of this paper, as well as in several other preceding publications, Dr. P. H. Dudley, Consulting Engineer of the New York Central Lines, has strongly defended the other opinion.2 The steel makers of the country have naturally rallied under Mr. Howard's banner, hoping to place the entire blame for these. failures upon the railroads with their high wheel-loads, hard steel, heavy traffic, and sometimes inferior roach-bed; while the railroad men,, on the other hand, have been busy accumulating statistics and records in the effort to find an actual reason in the rails themselves that would account for the seemingly haphazard occurrence of transverse fissures under varying conditions and at widely separated points. The view that these fissures were due merely to normal fatigue under alternating stresses seemed most reasonable to the writer until quite recently, because from work clone in this laboratory, as well as the work of other investigators of the problem, no structural differences, in the vast majority of cases, were found between metal at the nuclei of transverse fissures and metal at similar positions in the same rails or in other rails that had not developed fissures. . Conventional methods of drillhole site selection are reviewed briefly. Two approaches using geostatistics are then discussed, both of which have been shown to yield improved results. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is described which will select the best locations for drilling from a user specified number of possible drill sites. Two options are discussed. First, the user can specify a maximum drilling investment or a maximum number of drillholes and the program will select the locations yielding the minimum estimation variance. This amounts to getting the most for a given investment. Alternatively, a maximum tolerable estimation variance can be specified and the program will select the number and location of the drillholes to obtain the desired information at a minimum cost. Another benefit of the approach is the quantification of the tradeoffs between investment and information obtained.

The Bureau of Mines prepared submicron tungsten powder by reducing tungsten hexachloride with hydrogen. The particle diameters of the resulting tungsten powders ranged from 0.015 to 0.046 micron. Within the limits of the variables investigated, no clear-cut correlation was found between process conditions and final size of the powder. Oxygen was the major contaminant in the product; being present both as an adsorbed gas and as suboxides of tungsten. Studies showed that the powder yielded compacts of approximately 45 per-cent of theoretical density when compacted mechanically. Low-temperature sintering produced more rapid densification in these compacts than in compacts prepared from conventional powders. Adding up to 20 percent ultrafine powder to conventional tungsten powder caused an increase in density upon compaction with maximum densification occurring at approximately 12 percent ultrafine powder.

The sessile-drop technique was employed to study the effect of atmosphere and alloy additions of titanium and chromium on the surface tension and contact angle of nickel on sapphire substrates at 1500oC. Shear tests were conducted on the solidified sessile drops. The liquid-gas surface tension of pure nickel on sapphire was found to be 1747 ergs per sq cm, with a contact angle of 109.6 deg. The surface tension and contact angle were not affected significantly by the four atmospheres, vacuum, impure argon, pure argon, and pure hydrogen. Small additions of titanium and chromium decreased the contact angle and for the same alloy content, contact angles were lower in pure argon than in pure hydrogen. On the basis of shear-test results , the most probable cause for adhesion in the Ni-Al2O system is the formation of NiO:Al2O3 spinel at the interface; in the titanium alloy-Al2O3 system adhesion is thought to be due to a mechanical interlocking effect; in the chromium alloy-Al2O3 system adhesion is believed to be the result of solid-solution formation involving Cr2O3 and Al2O3 at the interface. In the last few years there has been considerable interest in reinforcing metals with ceramic whiskers. It has been postulated that, by reinforcing nickel with sapphire whiskers, high-temperature strengths su- perior to those of the best current nickel alloys can be achieved.' To fabricate a whisker-metal composite having optimum density and strength, understanding of wettability and adherence in the system is of prime importance. Although there has been some previous research in this a a need for further studies has been cited4-8 to understand better the effects of impurities, alloys additions, and atmosphere on the wetting and bonding of metals to metal oxides. The purpose of this research was to investigate the factors involved in the wetting and adherence of nickel/nickel alloys to sapphire (single-crystal a Al2O3). Sessile-drop experiments were conducted in vacuum, impure argon, pure argon, and pure hydrogen, to determine the effect of atmosphere on the contact angle of the metals on sapphire, and the liquid-gas surface tension of pure nickel. The solidified sessile drops were sheared from the sapphire substrate to measure the bond strength between the metal and ceramic. The alloy additions chosen were titanium and chromium since both enhance the wetting of nickel on sapphire.2, 3c Also, titanium is commonly used when brazing metal-to-ceramic seals to improve adherence. Since chromium forms an oxide that is completely soluble in sapphire, it was thought that the oxide could serve as a transition phase to promote bonding between the Ni-Cr alloy and sapphire. The horizontal cold chamber die casting process can produce a wide range of near-net shape, non-ferrous castings with small dimensional variation, excellent surface finish and very complex geometries. However, top quality die castings can be achieved only when optimal performance of the cold chamber and plunger is maintained during the molten metal injection phase of the process. Cold chambers (shot sleeves) are known to deteriorate fast and sometimes fail catastrophically because of poor design. Catastrophic fracture and wear due to deformation are leading causes to degrade quality, increase downtime and thereby decrease productivity and profitability. Therefore, a systematic approach to minimize irregular and adverse conditions which prevent an intended injection profile, is highly desirable. To eliminate them, design criteria for shot sleeves were developed using analytical tools and available experimental data. The correlation between design and mechanical failures of shot sleeves was shown by the data obtained from the die casting industry. Also, the relationship between die casting process parameters and deterioration/ failure mechanisms were carefully evaluated.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (District) is in the final phase of completing the Calumet System component of the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) by bringing the Thornton Composite Reservoir online by 2014. The Thornton Composite Reservoir will provide nearly 30 billion liters (7.9 billion gallons) of additional storage for minimization of combined sewer overflows(CSO) and flooding in the Chicago metropolitan area. The project requires that the existing 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter Thorn Creek tunnel conveying overbank flood flows is re-routed and connected to the Thornton Composite Reservoir. This paper presents the components of the Thornton Composite Reservoir and specifically the detailed evaluation of a drill-blast tunnel. Other project features include an access shaft, control gate, energy dissipating structure, bulkheads, and live tunnel connection. The construction contract will be procured in late 2009.

Crystallographic modifications and kinetics of solid-state phase trans-formations were determined for five rare-earth" sesquioxides--La2O3, Nd2O3, Sm2O3, Eu2O3, and Gd2O3. Oxides used for crystal modification studies were prepared by thermal decomposition of the following high-purity salts of the five rare-earth elements--carbonates, chlorides, fluorides, nitrates, oxalates, and sulfates. X-ray diffraction patterns of the cubic and hexagonal oxides were indexed by a graphical method and patterns of the monoclinic oxides by Ito's method. The kinetics of crystallographic transformation were determined by high-temperature X-ray diffractometry. The kinetic data were interpreted using a shrinking sphere model. All of the transformations followed first order kinetics. Activation energies were calculated by application of the Arrhenius equation. These solid-state phase inversions were concluded to occur by a reconstructive transformation mechanism.

THE refractory linings of open-hearth steel furnaces above the bath line are subject to severe wear not only from the heat caused by the combustion of the fuel and the reactions of the bath, but also from the melting action of the gases when not controlled and directed, and from the scouring of the oxides, etc. with which the products of combustion are charged. The framework that encases or binds the furnace is made up primarily of an iron or steel pan in which the furnace proper is built, side and end buckstays, and tie-rods. The expansion and contraction are so great and variable that the bindings may be subjected to severe stresses unless the tie-rods are carefully adjusted in heating up the furnace, but they are most affected by direct heat and usually become deformed from that cause when the lining is worn thin and, sometimes, when sections of the lining fall in and expose some of the framework. A deformed framework displaces the skewback of the roof arch and tends to distort or crush the roof. Bent buckstays deform the front wall, causing the door frames to stand away from the lining so that the gases burn between the lining and the frames, destroying both of them. Frequently the frames are attached to the buckstays; then when the latter bend the frames usually break. Preventing the distortion of the framework and maintaining the economy of the refractories are real factors in the cost of steel making. Not only does the cost of general repairs and reconstruction add directly to the cost of steel produced, but the time lost in making repairs cuts clown the steel production and increases the overhead expense of both the furnace shop and its allied foundry or mills. Many years ago water-cooled equipment applied to iron blast furnaces made it possible to increase greatly not only the size and production of the furnaces but also the life of the lining. It also cut down the loss from frequent repairs. The use of coal in Japan is reviewed, especially as regards future trends, and an appraisal is made of Canadian coal in comparison with domestic Japanese coal and imports from other countries. The importance of maintaining a solid nucleous within the Canadian bituminous coal industry is emphasized. I N RECENT years, Japan has emerged as a valuable market for Canadian exports.
