THE Bergbüchlein and Probierbüchlein occupy a unique position in the literature of mining and metallurgy, for, they are the first printed books on any aspect of the two related professions. The first printed book on any subject has an allure that may not be entirely warranted by the strict historical significance of its contents. Among the books of the first century of printing there are very few that contain information that was new at the time of publication. Much' of what they recorded had been previously circulated in manuscript form. Printed books are nevertheless of great value because they mark the time when the author's words, free from errors-or at least with the same errors-became available to large numbers, of readers, who thus could easily and cheaply acquire a common background for their future work. Moreover, though there is occasionally some doubt as to the exact year of publication'(as in the case of the present works), it is generally easier to date a printed work than a manuscript, and thus to provide a fixed coördinate in history. The Bergbüchlein, "The Little Book on Ores," is the first printed work in the field of mining. It is an introduction to mining geology, which means that it was not addressed to the practicing expert but was intended to rouse the interest of beginners in the various aspects of a future vocation. It touches on the theories of the generation of ores, introduces and defines some of the most frequently encountered technical terms of the profession, and indicates what knowledge and tools are required for successful prospecting and mining. It also describes the ores of the seven most important metals. For those parts that deal with theory the author accepted uncritically the traditional teachings of the alchemists and the astrologers; his hints on where to find promising ores are based partly on superstition; but, there is enough factual,

Traditional loading systems have relied for many years on wheel and track loaders, power shovels, conveyor belts, and more recently, hydraulic front shovels. Each has certain advantages and disadvantages, depending largely on job conditions. Hydraulic backhoes were introduced several years ago as still another truck loading option. At first, buckets were small and backhoe use was limited to small earthmoving projects. Now, as backhoes are equipped with shorter sticks and bigger buckets to move larger quantities of earth. The "mass excavation" concept offers an excellent truck loading option in many situations. System Development and Advantages Mass excavation was first used successfully by contractors in site development and highway construction, loading both on-highway and off-highway trucks. Operators were able to take advantage of the excavator's ability to work in poor underfoot conditions and dig in tough materials. The technique was first applied to mining in the kaolin mines of central Georgia. Kaolin, one of the world's most abundant minerals, is used to make paper, paint, ceramics, rubber, plastics, and many other products. Since kaolin clay is slippery when wet, load-out with wheel loaders is very inefficient. Also, kaolin is found in very spotty deposits due to the weathering process involved in its formation. Consequently, draglines are also impractical for kaolin mining since they don't have the mobility to move between clay deposits. In response to these mining conditions and kaolin characteristics, mines began using excavators in mass excavation as early as 1976. They have developed a system that takes advantage of the excavator's •high penetration and breakout force in tight materials; •fast-cycling hydraulics; •ability to work in poor underfoot conditions; and •mobility in comparison to draglines. This loading method has been successful in Georgia's kaolin mines and now can be applied to other mining operations as well. "The influence of an unconventional lance with a central nozzle on the multiphase fluid flow in a steelmaking converter is studied in this work by means of computer simulations. The lance has four peripheral supersonic nozzles and a vertical central nozzle. Besides, the oxygen flow in the central nozzle is considered independent from the main oxygen supply. Transient two-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out considering just molten steel and gaseous oxygen as the existing phases. Numerical results show that bath agitation and droplet generation are enhanced as a result of the central nozzle. However, the performance of this lance strongly depends on the distance of the lance tip to the molten steel surface and the velocity of the oxygen jet.IntroductionCurrently, two thirds of the world crude steel is produced through the steelmaking oxygen converter [1]. Given the unquestionable economic importance of this technology, any improvement or optimization proposal is welcome. In the majority of current oxygen converters a top oxygen supersonic jet is blown onto the molten steel through a water-cooled lance to eliminate by oxidation some impurities such as carbon and phosphorus. Conventional lances have inclined peripheral nozzles whose number depends on the converter capacity. During the process, a large amount of gases evolves, forming metal droplets and a metal-slag-gas emulsion [2]. The droplets and the resultant emulsion increase the reaction interfacial area, promoting in this way carbon removal and dephosphorization of the molten steel bath [3]. However, during the blowing stage, the emulsion rises towards the lance and converter mouth and frequently forms layers which accumulate in the lance, reducing the life of the lance tip [4, 5]. It is possible that some freezing of the molten metal occurs due to the low oxygen injection temperature, however there are no reports on this. Besides, frequently undesirable operating phenomena such as spitting and slopping may arise as a result of inappropriate blowing practices or bad lance design. In the oxygen steelmaking industry, novel lances design are needed in order to enhance the decaburization rate and the slag formation and, at the same time, preventing operating practices that decrease productivity and move away the shop from safety standards."

Along with increased production from longwall units has come the likelihood of increased worker noise exposures. In recent years, equipment has become larger, more powerful, and noisier than its predecessors. For these reasons, the Mining Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating worker noise exposure on longwall faces and researching possible solutions to reduce this exposure. Part of this research effort involves studying the effect of covering the underside of longwall shields with acoustical material to reduce reverberating noise along the face. Experiments using acoustical absorptive insulation to cover the undersides of the shields, shearer body, and the shield supports were conducted at the full scale simulated long-wall test facility located at the Pittsburgh Research Center. Sound levels were recorded every 1.5 m [5 fl] along a 15.2 m [50 ft] section of the simulated face for all of the conditions tested. The analysis of the data indicated that a 2.0-3.0 dBA noise reduction was achieved between the shearer drums and a 4.0-5.5 MA attenuation was attained upwind of the headgate drum.

"Palabora Mining Copper (PMC) has two autogenous mills that have been in operation since 1976. The mills were originally designed to treat 30 000 t/d of open cast copper ore in a closed circuit with cyclones. As the ore body went deeper the open cast method of mining was changed to block caving, a consequence of this was the dolerite content (hardest barren material) increased significantly, increasing the production rate of pebbles and thus reducing the milling capacity. In order to cope with the increased ore hardness and to increase mill capacity, a second ball milling stage and pebble crushing were incorporated to the circuit. The above actions created new challenges to the circuit operation and bottlenecks in different areas of the milling circuit.This paper reports the holistic work performed on the Palabora autogenous milling circuit including the implementation of a mill constraint control scheme, the implementation of a pebble removal system from the circuit and a new circuit configuration."

The dissolution behavior of copper and gold from their pure state and from Au/Cu alloys in cyanide solutions has been investigated using a rotating disc. Oxygen was used as an oxidant. The effect of the composition of the alloys, stirring speed of the disc, concentration of lixiviants and temperature on the overall dissolution kinetics has been studied. Gold/copper alloys of three compositions were used in this study. The atomic percent of gold in these alloys was 75, 50 and 25, respectively. The dissolution behavior of these three alloys was compared with that of pure gold and of copper under the same chemical conditions. In general, the dissolution of copper and gold from alloys is partially controlled by surface chemical reaction and largely by mass transfer.

Four case studies of special geomining conditions from Indian coalfields are discuss- ed. These cases relate to (a) pillar extraction in two seams simultaneously under a difficult roof (Satpura I and II). (b) depillaring in an inclined seam resulting in rib instability (Sudamdih), (c) depillaring resulting in floor lift and side spalling (Jarangdih) and (d) contiguous pillar extraction under hard incavable strata. Solutions to these problems are given based on rock mechanics principles involving stress analysis, classification techniques, past experience and engineering judgement.

The fact that methane ignitions continue to occur at the mining face indicates that monitoring with machine-mounted methanometers does not always indicate the presence of high methane concentrations. Methane concentrations at the face change quickly due to changes in airflow. By measuring these changes in airflow, it may be possible to predict changes in face methane levels more quickly. Currently there are no techniques or instruments to accurately measure airflow in by the mouth of the ventilation curtain or tubing. Tests conducted in the NIOSH ventilation test gallery compare the data provided by one-, two-, and three-axis ultrasonic anemometers. The effects of changes in airflow direction and turbulence on instrument readings are discussed, and guidelines are given for selecting the type of instruments to be used for monitoring airflow near the mining face.

The BHP San Manuel Smelter operates an Outokumpu Oy flash furnace, conventional Peirce-Smith converters, anode casting facilities, and two double contact sulfuric acid plants. The flash furnace was commissioned in July 1988 and since then, the smelting capacity has been continuously increased to 30% above design. The converter operation was challenged to process larger amounts of matte with existing capacity. Utilization of industrial technological improvements and people technology transformed the Converter Department from a constraint to easily accommodate the new demonstrated flash furnace capacity. This technology also increased secondary consumption, converter campaign life, and reduced operating costs. This paper will describe the important Converter Department achievements in the past five years.

This paper examine the optimization of a beneficiation plant for recovering marketable barites from crude ores of different characteristics. The plant, part of a mining complex in Sardinia, consists of a jig section integrated with a flotation line. The problem has been studied using a suitable model of the process, based upon experimental and field data pertaining to both the characteristics of the feed material and the performance of machinery. Data have been automatically processed with the aid of a computer to find the optimum setting of each section, in order to maximize profit for each kind of ore separately fed to the plant. Moreover, the advantages of blending the various concentrates - not all of them individually marketable - are also demonstrated. The overall economic result can be improved provided suitable proportions of each kind of ore are fed to the plant. Such information is fundamental for the long-term planning of exploitation of available reserves, and provides guidelines for further prospecting. The paper illustrates the washability characteristics of the ore's and describes in detail the model adopted. The results of data processing are then presented in the form of computer graphs and discussed. Finally, conclusions are drawn regarding the advantages of resorting to Operations Research as an aid to management.

The copper-silver system presents several points of special interest in the study of segregate structures. The system is simple eutectic, with limited solid solutions terminal with the pure component metals. The extent of solid solubility decreases with decreasing temperature for both the copper-rich and the silver-rich alloys, thus offering a possibility for the formation of Widmanstätten figures and also a possibility for aging after quenching. In contrast to the structures studied previously the structures in this system are unique in their origin, for one terminal solid solution will precipitate the other, and vice versa. In most of the other systems for which crystallographic data on the precipitation (or transformation) process arc available, either intermetallic compounds or intermediate phases partake in the decomposition process; the absence of such phases thus distinguishes this system. The lattice structures of the two solid solutions are identical in type, differing in lattice spacing by approximately 10 per cent; because of this it seems difficult if not impossible to predict on the basis of present theory either the outward form of the precipitate or the lattice orientation relationships between matrix and precipitate. The eutectic temperature in the copper-silver system' is 779" C. At this temperature copper dissolves 4.3 atomic per cent (7.0 weight per cent) of silver in solid solution; this solid solubility decreases to zero at room temperature.² Silver at the eutectic temperature rctains 14.0

A need developed to establish this training program internationally. The first international training session was held at the APEX San Cristóbal Mine in Bolivia. This paper discusses the program’s development, execution, results, and lessons learned with an emphasis on multicultural environments.

U.S. supply and demand data for coal, by States and regions, were tabulated for the years 1960 and 1965. Estimates are provided of State-by-State quantitative data for the coal industry that can be integrated into State and regional energy balances by source, form, and consumer sectors, and used for estimates of interstate and interregional energy flows. The tables give an estimated total supply of coal available for consumption, and also report the distribution of the supply among the major consuming sectors (household and, commercial, industrial, transportation, and electricity generation). To enable comparison of coal data with those for other energy forms, tonnages were converted to British thermal units (Btu). Future energy analysis studies could be facilitated by changes in the categorization of information collected on the coal industry. The data shown are based primarily on Bureau of Mines source material.

When the United States Government started buying gold at varying prices per ounce, set by the President and the Treasury Department, the gold miner found himself facing new conditions, as gold became a commodity with a fluctuating market price. While it was self-evident that the miner was to receive more for his gold than the old established price of $20.67 per ounce, there was an element of uncertainty, which made it difficult, and perhaps dangerous, to decide to invest his time and money to produce gold, especially if the profit would represent only the difference between $20.67 an ounce and the new price as set from day to day by the Government. When, however, on Jan. 30, 1934, the United States went off the gold standard, the price of newly mined gold being rather definitely set at $35 per ounce, with some assurance that the price would be maintained at or near this figure for a long time to come, the gold miner was justified in revaluing his property on the basis of the new price, and the prospector was offered inducement to spend his time and energies hunting for new mines, or going back to old locations previously abandoned as of doubtful value. It is interesting to see what this new price means to the producer of newly mined gold, and how much of the increase is passed on to the producer. It will be found that, as with the base metals, the nearer he can get to producing a finished product himself the greater his reward will be; the net returns for bullion being necessarily higher than for the same amount of gold shipped in concentrates to the smelter. Bullion can be shipped to the United States mints or Government assay offices under the following terms and conditions. An affidavit must accompany the shipment, stating, among other things: 1. The source of the gold; whether ore, tailings or placer. 2. The tons of ore, tailings or cubic yards of gravel from which the shipment was recovered.

As is known, the oxidized antimony and antimonate are hard to treat. A new combined mineral processing flowsheet which is controlled in grinding and classification ?bulk floatation?gravity separation is adopted to dispose of gravity-separated tailings (antimony content: 1.48%; oxidization rate: 68.92%) in Muli Antimony Mine, the grade of floatation antimony concentrates is 32.64%; the grade of gravity-separated antimony concentrates is 26.99%; the combined grade of floatation and gravity-separated antimony concentrates is 30.85%, and the total recovery of antimony is 70.64%. Adopting the new mineral processing technique have solved the problem of over grinding of antimony ore by controlling grinding and classification, recovering effectively the sulfide antimony and the easy floatable oxidized antimony of fine size by bulk floatation, recovering effectively the oxidized antimony which is hard to float by classified gravity separation. This is a great breakthrough in the mineral processing technique of the recovery of the oxidized antimony. At present, favorable economic benefit has been obtained from the application of this processing technique in Muli Antimony Mine.

Approach A small lightweight pagerphone, having crocodile clips which pierce the phone line insulation, was developed. How It Works The Portable Telephone/Intercom is temporarily clipped onto an existing pagerphone line at any location, and operated like an intercom. It is riot necessary to strip the insulation from the pagerphone line to make the connection. In addition to the clips for connecting to pagerphone line, the Portable Telephone/Intercom consists of a small belt-carried control box, an ear-phone, and a bone-conduction microphone which is attached to the webbing in a miner's helmet. All together, these components weigh only 20 ounces including the batteries

In mineral industry operations the insitu ore is’separated from the waste rock and is subjected to a series ofprocesses to convert it into a valuable product. Profitability of any operation in this industry depends on how eficiently the insitu rock (ore -I- waste) is converted in to the final product and how much value @ice) it commands in the market. Traditionally, the total process in mineral industry is classt@ed into two groups as mining and milling, and optimised independently without considering the impact of one over the other. This paper investigates the impact of mining operations (especially blasting;) on downstream processes and demonstrates the potential benefits of the “Mine - Mill Blasting” approach through simulations and case histories.
