The steady growth of the Northwest portion of the United States over the past two decades, and the very rapid development of Northern California, Western Nevada, and Oregon in particular, led the Calaveras Cement Company people to Shasta County, California in 1957. The presence of a large deposit of high calcium carbonate limestone had been recognized for many years, but it required the momentum of an expanding economy to make these long known reserves valuable. This, plus the availability of a reliable supply of fuel in the form of natural gas, and the ready means of shipping the product to the consumer both by highway and railroad, seemed to offer the proper combination to launch a successful venture. The Calaveras Cement Company had been manufacturing cement by the wet process since 1925 at their plant at San Andreas, California. Starting with two small kilns, the plant in Calaveras County started an expansion program in 1945 that ultimately resulted in the plant as it exists today, consisting of five kilns with a combined production of 4.5 million barrels annually.

Subsidence to surface occurs in a large proportion of underground mines. Preliminary to any indication of subsidence on the surface, there is usually a breaking up and sloughing of the cover into the mine opening which, in a period of time ranging from minutes to many years, progresses to the surface, This process is referred to as subsurface subsidence. In many mining operations, information regarding the process of subsurface subsidence is important, For example, if there are buildings or other improvements on the surface, or if the direction of the subsurface subsidence might threaten other underground workings--such as shafts--or if the subsidence might be progressing in a direction which would fall outside the anticipated subsidence limits, the problem could assume special significance.

A comparison of the isotope-dilution, vacuum-fusion, and chemical methods of analysis for nitrogen in Si-Fe is made with particular emphasis on the effect of sample history. The superiority of the isotope-dilution method from the point of view of 1 HE analytical techniques used to determine nitrogen in Si-Fe have been subjected to close scrutiny in recent years primarily because of the marked influence of the element on the properties of the alloy. I lamata is within the Morobe Goldfield (7¦ 25' S, 146¦ 39' E) on the Wau (SB 55-14),1:250,000 scale map sheet (Fig 1). The deposit is 13 km SW of Wau, within the headwaters of the Upper Watut River, at an average elevation of 2000 m. The steep mountainous terrain is covered by dense tropical rainforest and access is by helicopter or by foot track. The deposit has been described previously by Wells and Young (1991) and 1)enwer. Leach and Mowat (1995). Data collected to late 1996 have been used to estimate an Inferred Resource of 9.2 Mt at 3.1 g/t gold using a cutoff of 0.5 g/t. This contains a high grade portion for which an Inferred Resource of 1.2 Mt at 9.7 grt gold has been estimated using a 5.0 g/t cutoff.

Preliminary work in the investigation of electrolytic manganese, as reported J, showed promise for a practical procedure of continuous production. Laboratory work was continued in the direction of process simplification to determine an economically feasible procedure that mould require a minimum of expensive equipment for plant erection and a minimum of regent consumption for operation. Results furnished enough evidence to indicate that modifications of the process could be made leading to simplified procedure and with no sacrifice in operating efficiency. A supply of at least 200 pounds of the metal was desired for alloy research, and it was believed worth Mile to utilize available facilities in a search for difficulties, that were not encountered in the laboratory and that might arise in larger-scale operation. Consequently, an experimental pilot plant was erected. The plant was designed for a capacity of 15 rounds per day of metal and operated under simulated -plant practice.

oriented crystals of iron and iron with 3, 5, and 6.25 pct Si were rolled to reductions of 10 and 70 to 97 pct at room temperature. Similarly oriented crystals were deformed in tension. Dislocation substructures of the deformed crystals were observed by transmission electron microscopy to determine the effect of silicon on the formation of substructures. Pole figures were obtained to relate orientation changes to substructure. When rolled 10 pct, the iron crystals and the 3 pct Si-Fe crystals formed cells, 1 and 0.2 u in diameter, respecliuely. Cells were absent in the higher-silicon crystals. Extended dislocations and possible stacking faults were observed in the 6.25 pct Si-Fe crystal rolled 10 pct and annealed at 650°C. The stacking-fault energy was estimated to be 20 ergs per sq cm. Rolling to 70 pct resulted in the formation of sub-bands (0.9 µ wide) ill the iron crystals and transition bands (containing 0.2-µ-wide subbands) in the 3 pct Si crystals. No subbands formed in the 5 pct Si-Fe crystal until it was ankzealed. SliP occurred on (112) planes ill tension. The slip traces on the 3 pct Si crystal were wary while those on the 5 pct Si crystal wvere straight. The strain-hardening coefficient for the 5 pct Si crystal was nearly zero. Cells did not form, at least at elongations up to 10 pet. The results suggest that cross slip of iron is restricted by additions of silicon beyond about 3 pct possibly by formation of immobile extended dislocations. IN a previous paper' the authors described the substructures developed in (100)[001]-oriented crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe which were rolled to reductions of 10 to 90 pct at room temperature. At low reductions (10 to 20 pct) cells, approximately 0.2 to 0.3 ja in diameter, were formed. The cell walls consisted mainly of edge dislocations. With increasing reduction (up to 50 pct) the cells were seen to elongate in the rolling direction. In certain regions of the crystal there were significant reorientations which were characterized as rotations about an axis normal to the (100) or rolling plane. These regions were called "transition bands". The regions in which there were no reorientations were called ('deformation bands". At reductions of 60 to 70 pct the elongated cells in the transition bands became sub-bands separated by low-angle tilt boundaries with angles of disorientation of about 2 deg. The elongated cell structure in the deformation band was replaced by a general distribution of dislocations. It was noted that the width of the subbands in the transition bands remained 0.2 to 0.3 µ; i .e., the width of the subbands was the same as the initial cell diameter for reductions up to at least 70 pct. From this, and from considerations of the mechanism of formation of the transition bands,' it was concluded that the subbands evolved directly from the initial cells. In order to check this conclusion, it was decided to examine the relationship between initial cell diameter and width of subbands produced by large rolling reductions. Cell size is known to be dependent upon the temperature of deformation.2,3 However, preliminary experiments with 3 pct Si-Fe crystals indicated that the change in cell size with increasing temperature of deform,ation was not sufficient for the present purpose. On the other hand, cell diameters generally reported for iron deformed at room temperature2'3 range from 1 to 2 p, a factor of 3 to 10 larger than the cells in 3 pct Si-Fe rolled to 10 pct reduction,' indicating the possibility of a marked dependence of substructure (at least in terms of cell size) on the amount of silicon in iron. Thus, the investigation was enlarged to include the study of the effects of varying silicon content on substructure in lightly rolled as well as in heavily rolled crystals of iron and iron with 3, 5, and 6.25 pct Si. The crystals used in this study all had the same orientation, (100)[001], with respect to rolling plane and rolling direction. These were rolled to reductions of from 10 to 97 pct and the substructures determined by electron transmission microscopy in both the rolled state and after annealing. In addition, stress-strain curves were obtained from (100)[001]-oriented crystals of iron and 3 and 5 pct Si-Fe to determine the effect of silicon on tensile properties. The dislocation substructure of the tensile specimens was also determined for Samples pulled to 2 and 10 pct elongation at room temperature for comparison with the substructures produced by rolling. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Crystals with 3, 5, and 6.25 pct Si were prepared by annealing 0.012-in.-thick sheets of high-purity Si-Fe in purified argon at 1200°C to effect growth

"In natural world, some kinds of scheelite minerals are rich in molybdenum. Molybdenum exists in the crystal lattice of scheelite in the form of isomorphism, and the content of MoO3 varies from 2% to 10%. As a result, the flotability of seyrigite (scheelite with molybdenum) turns to be weaker. One seyrigite mine, which has been built for 3 years,still could not produce qualified seyrigite concentrate due to the weak flotability of seyrigite (Mo-bearing scheelite) in raw ore. In our experimental research, through adopting new seyrigite collector TA-3 and advanced mineral processing technology, the seyrigite concentrate with a grade of 65.62% WO3 at a recovery of 87.47% was obtained for the raw ore containing 0.19% WO3 and 0.074% Mo. By applying the new technical achievement, for the raw ore containing 0.272% WO3, the seyrigite concentrate assaying 68.03% WO3 with a recovery of 77.56% was obtained in industrial production.INTRODUCTIONIn natural world, some kinds of scheelite minerals are rich in molybdenum. The content of MoO3 in seyrigite varies from 2% to 10% usually, the content of MoO3 in some of the seyrigite even reaches 34%. The flotability of seyrigite is weak (Zhang, 2007), and the seyrigite is difficult to be recovered by flotation with common collectors and regulators. One scheelite mine in Anhui China, which is a skarn type seyrigite mine, has not produced qualified concentrate yet since 3 years it has been built due to the limit of beneficiation technology. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research on the collectors with high efficiency and developing advanced processing flow for this kind of ore."

IT is generally recognized that fluid is lost from rotary drilling mud s to permeable strata during normal drilling operations;1,2,3 but that this fluid is the filtrate from the mud, rather than the mud itself, has been shown by various workers.1,4,5 . The presence of this filtrate in oil-bearing or gas-bearing strata is undesirable and harmful. The decreased permeability of the stratum to oil effected by the presence of water has been pointed out by several investigators,6,7 and since, in the production of the reservoir fluid, the greatest pressure drop occurs immediately adjacent to the borehole, it follows that infiltered water is particularly objectionable in this region. Again, this filtrate tends to make electrical logs less reliable, since oil in the proximity of the borehole is probably flushed out to an appreciable ent by the water.8 Observation of side wall cores may be misleading for the same reason. Drill-stem tests in low-pressure areas may be of doubtful value where no oil is recovered, unless sufficient time is allowed for production of water lost from the mud. The infiltered water may hinder drilling operations by softening shales and causing sloughing; the "tight hole" occasioned by excessive deposition of filter cake in the hole is a common occurrence. The filter cake remaining on the face of the producing formation may itself sometimes be detrimental to production.9 In view of these implications of the importance of filtration of mud, an investigation was undertaken to determine the factors involved in the infiltration process, and to correlate these in such a manner that the values obtained in routine filter tests employing a conventional filter of the "wall-building tester" type,10 together with data on size of hole, drill pipe, and rate of mud circulation, could be used to estimate water loss and distance of penetration of the filtrate into strata.

Discussion of the paper of R. B. Woodworth, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 107, November, 1915, pp. 2247 to 2312. R. B. WOODWORTH, Pittsburgh, Pa.-This is a very long paper. It is a structural engineer's contribution to the art of mining and is written from his standpoint rather than from that of the mining engineer, and is, therefore, a study in the development of drilling structures by one who has made it his business to design structures rather than mechanism and machinery and rather than to utilize those structures in the actual exploitation of oil and gas. Drilling practice varies widely in different oil and gas fields. The , problems of western Pennsylvania are much simpler than the problems of the Mid-Continent and of the Gulf Coastal Plain and these again are simpler than problems of the Pacific Coast. The history of the commercial development of oil and gas is recorded in the annual publications of the U. S. Geological Survey and other bodies whose business it is to make record of statistics. The mechanical and structural features of the art of drilling have not yet received adequate treatment by the historian. Scattered references may be found on the subject in almost any work dealing at large with petroleum and its production. These references, however, are to those particular aspects of the matter that were contemporary with the publications themselves, but so far as I am aware there is no continuous and comprehensive account written of the development of drilling structures from their beginnings down to the present time, and certainly the more modern application of steel in the construction of such structures has not previously had an adequate discussion. With this latter phase of the subject I have been intimately associated, indeed, taking to myself the credit for having, in a way, been responsible more than any one else in the United States for the application of steel in the manufacture of drilling structures, and the purpose of the paper which is now before you is to record particularly the steps in that development while the subject is still fresh and the data available.

This report (Independent Functional Safety Assessment 4.0) is the fifth in a nine-part series of recommendations addressing the functional safety of processor-controlled mining equipment. It is part of a risk-based system safety process encompassing hardware, software, humans, and the operating environment for the equipment’s life cycle. Figure 1 shows a safety framework containing these recommendations. The reports in this series address the various life cycle stages of inception, design, approval and certification, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. These recommendations were developed as a joint project between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. They are intended for use by mining companies, original equipment manufacturers, and aftermarket suppliers to these mining companies. Users of these reports are expected to consider the set in total during the design cycle. • 1.0 Safety Introduction.—This is an introductory report for the general mining industry. It provides basic system/software safety concepts, discusses the need for mining to address the functional safety of programmable electronics (PE), and includes the benefits of implementing system/software safety program. • 2.1 System Safety and 2.2 Software Safety.—These reports draw heavily from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 61508 [IEC 1998a,b,c,d,e,f,g] and other standards. The scope is “surface and underground safety-related mining systems employing embedded, networked, and nonnetworked programmable electronics.” System safety seeks to design safety into all phases of the entire system. Software is a subsystem; thus, software safety is a part of the system’s safety. • 3.0 Safety File.—This report contains the documentation that demonstrates the level of safety built into the system and identifies limitations for the system’s use and operation. In essence, it is a “proof of safety” that the system and its operation meets the appropriate level of safety for the intended application. It starts from the beginning of the design, is maintained during the full lifecycle of the system, and provides administrative support for the safety program of the full system. • 4.0 Safety Assessment.—The independent assessment of the safety file is addressed. It establishes consistent methods to determine the completeness and suitability of safety evidence and justifications. This assessment could be conducted by an independent third party. • 5.0 Safety Framework Guidance.—It is intended to supplement the safety framework reports with guidance providing users with additional information. The purpose is to assist users in applying the concepts presented. In other words, the safety framework is what needs to be done and the guidance is the how it can be done. The guidance information reinforces the concepts, describes various methodologies that can be used, and gives examples and references. It also gives information on the benefits and drawbacks of various methodologies. The guidance reports are not intended to promote a single methodology or to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject material. They provide information and references so that the user can more intelligently choose and implement the appropriate methodologies given the user’s application and capabilities. [ ]

"Longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique is one of the important methods for underground thick seam extraction in China. The coal seam in LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom-coal and top-coal. The bottom-coal is mined by conventional longwall method while the top-coal is mined by caving method. The top-coal caving process in LTCC and block caving process in metal mine are both gravity flow of loose ore/coal blocks. However, the presence of caving shield in LTCC makes the characteristics of drawing body shape in the two caving processes differ a lot. This paper discusses the influence of caving shields on the characteristics of drawing body shapes in light of recent studies of the top-coal drawing process. The theoretical model for describing the drawing body shape in LTCC is proposed both along the seam strike and seam inclination. Then, the experimental data are used to validate the correctness of the theoretical model. Furthermore, two examples of how the theoretical findings assist LTCC mining are given and discussed.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique have been widely used for extracting thick coal seams in China. About 0.6–0.7 billion metric tons of coal come from longwall top-coal caving panels every year. The maximum annual production is 15 million metric tons per panel _The mining method employed in such panel is a combination of top-coal caving mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique, which is suitable for seam height between 12–20 m, as shown in Figure 1. Apart from China, LTCC has also been employed in some coal mines in Australia and Vietnam (Le et al., 2017).The coal seam in a LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom coal and top coal. This report describes the first phase of a general investigation designed to ascertain whether an electronic roof-testing device can be developed that will improve the ability to detect "loose" or "drummy" roof rock over that possible by striking the roof with a sounding bar and noting the character of the air vibrations with the unaided ear or the rock vibrations with the fingers. The amplitude, frequency content, and duration of the vibrations produced by striking solid and drummy roof rock with a hammer or sounding bar have been measured. Results disclosed that there is a significant difference between the characteristics of the vibrations produced in solid and drummy roof. This difference is such that the design of an electronic device to indicate quantitatively the condition of the roof rock appears possible. INTRODUCTION The conventional method of roof testing consists of striking the roof with a bar2/ and judging its soundness from the character of the air vibrations heard with the ear and/or the rock vibrations felt with the fingers -a procedure that depends upon the experience and the sensory abilities of the observer. Impact testing of a solid roof rock usually produces a sharp ping or click, whereas impact testing of a drummy roof rock produces a dull thud or drummy sound. This method of roof testing is, at most, only a qualitative test, and many roof rocks are difficult to classify as drummy or solid.

The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy hosted the 6thInternational Heavy Minerals Conference at the Zulu Nyala Game Lodge near Hluhluwe in Zululand, during September 2007. This series of conferences has run for 10 years and has been held on three continents. The interest that has been shown in the conference over the years has demonstrated that the field of heavy minerals is a dynamic and profitable one. It is perhaps appropriate that the tenth conference was held in Zululand, South Africa, where it had its roots. The conference theme was ?back to basics?, and this implied revisiting many of the technologies that made this industry a great one. In doing so, we got a view of how those basic technologies have been put to new applications. There were 39papers accepted for the conference, covering all aspects of the industry. These were presented over a period of four days. This edition of the Conference Proceedings provides the reader with a permanent record of these papers. We hope this volume will join the other five, which this series of conferences has produced, and give a lasting record of the development of our industry.

THE paper describes an investigation on the pressure welding of low-carbon steels. The work necessitated a reproducible mechanical means of making the weld and also a test that would indicate the nature and completeness of the union. An apparatus including a high-temperature furnace was devised for making the welds, and the ordinary tensile pulling test 'in correlation with macroscopic and microscopic observations was used as a means of examining the result. Initially it was intended to devise some simple test of weldability, but as the experimental work progressed, it soon became clear that with our limited knowledge of the exact nature of the mechanism of pressure welding it was impossible to interpret our results or to devise a simple test of weldability. Hence it was manifestly necessary first to study the mechanism of such welding and attempt to elucidate the fundamentals underlying the so-called welding of steel by pressing together two metal surfaces. It also became evident that it was necessary to define the term "welding." In many early experiments when, two heated rods were pressed together and then pulled in the cold, very high tensile values were obtained, and yet the fracture took place exactly in the line of junction except for a few small scattered areas. In other words, the' rods pulled apart just as they were before being "stuck" together and had certainly not welded completely, despite the high value indicating the strong cohesive force operating. In this paper, welding has been considered as a form of intimate contact between two metal surfaces, so that the units lose their individual identity and there is no change in physical properties in passing through the weld from one unit to the other. This is defined as "true welding." When true welding has taken place completely over the whole section, the probability is that the rupture in tensile test will occur outside the weld.

This article summarizes some of the principal features of the taxation of industrial mineral mining in Canada. Where the rules applicable to such operations differ from those pertaining to the production and processing of precious and base meta s (non-industrial minerals), the two sets of rules are compared. If a conclusion could be drawn from such an over-all comparison, it may be that the total tax burden on an industrial mineral mine can be considerably more onerous than on both base meta mining operations and manufacturing profits.

A N alloy of 50 pct Ni-50 pct Fe is currently manu- factured in tape thickness down to 1/8 mil. In the annealed form, this alloy produces an almost square hysteresis loop. This has generally been related to the fact that by proper rolling and annealing practice a sharp cube, (100) [OOl], texture can be developed. As part of a program directed toward an understanding of the relationships between magnetic properties and structure of tape core materials, analyses were made of preferred orientations in tapes of various thicknesses. Annealed tapes of this alloy in 2, 1, 1/2, ¼, and Y' mil gages were acquired from commercial sources. Pole figures constructed for the 2 and 1 mil tapes showed the expected sharp cube texture. However, the ½, ¼, and ? mil annealed tapes showed no evidence of any preferred orientations. A comparison of two transmission patterns is shown in Fig. 1. The origin of the absence of texture in the tapes of less than 1 mil thickness was explored in some detail. The basic questions were whether the heat treatment for the thinner tapes was wrongly selected, whether the initial cold worked textures were different, or whether the actual thickness of the tape exercised some influence on its annealing characteristics. Quantities of the five gages of tape were acquired in the as-rolled condition just prior to the final anneal. Pole figures of the cold worked textures were constructed for each of the tapes. A diesel engine with a misfiring cylinder is likely to break down in a short time when the engine is used without maintenance. The authors have developed a method of detecting the occurrence of cylinder misfiring and specifying the misfiring cylinder by using wavelet analysis and statistical analysis on the root mean square (r.m.s.) values of two kinds of acceleration waveforms. This detection method is considered superior to traditional methods, which require several accelerometers, especially in terms of simplicity. Since the development of the method, research has been conducted on semi-automatic processing of measured signals and signal transmission from the worksite to a remote office. Field tests confirmed that 1 + 105 points of dynamic data could be transmitted through the mobile multimedia network within 15 minutes, and the time for signal processing was within 15 minutes. Final determination on the condition of a diesel engine in heavy machinery could be achieved within 30 minutes. Shortened processing time is expected by improvement of the processing software.

A study of the literature shows that the greater part of research work on annealing of cold-worked iron has been for the purpose of studying the effect on grain-size and properties other than hardness. No reference has been found of experimental work of the same nature as that explained in this short paper. The material used throughout was Vismera iron, an iron containing 0.03 carbon and made several years ago by the Inland Steel Co. One-half inch stock was cut into cylinders % in. long.
