The presence of reactive metal sulfide minerals in waste rock contributes to the hazard of spontaneous combustion in dumps, as these minerals react with air and water entering the dump at ambient temperatures to form various mineral products and significant heat. This reaction series can also be an initiator of self-heating of carbonaceous material present in the waste rocks if sufficiently high temperatures are reached. Characterisation of these reactive minerals has primarily been to assess the risk of acid mine drainage, which is not necessarily an indicator of spontaneous combustion risk. No systematic testing procedure has been adopted by industry to assess the spontaneous combustion propensity of the waste rock. As a consequence, the principal management strategy for spontaneous combustion has been a reactive approach of dealing with events as they arise.Recent advances in adiabatic oven-testing have enabled more definitive assessment of the spontaneous combustion propensity of coals, including the quantification of the accelerating influence of reactive pyrite (Beamish and Beamish, 2011, 2012; Beamish, Lin and Beamish, 2012). This same test procedure has been used to assess the self-heating performance of metal concentrates and is therefore amenable to assessing the metal sulfide oxidation process from low ambient temperatures. The data obtained from such testing can be used to quantify the more prone waste rock sequences of a mineral deposit in advance of mining. The degree of regional denudation is one of the most important factors for judging the preservation potential of ore deposits as it can be used in a predictive manner to help guide exploration. There are many methods available to judge the denudation degrees of mineral deposits. These include regional geochemical assessment methods, the characterisation of primary lithogeochemical halos, the thermoelectricity of pyrite and apatite fission-track methods. Each method has its specific principles, application scopes, limitations and successful cases. The Henderson ore body is east of the Continental Divide in the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains about 50 miles west of Denver. The ore body is being developed for mining by workings that extend more than 3500 feet below the topographic surface. During construction of the mine workings, ground water in fractures in crystalline rocks has been encountered. From 1969 to 1973, Charles S. Robinson & Associates, Inc., in cooperation with the engineering and geologic staffs of the Climax Molybdenum Company, a division of Amax Inc., studied the ground water geology of the Henderson mine development area. Detailed geologic records of the Henderson mine were available as a result of the exploration, evaluation and development of the mine. Records of the flow, chemical composition and temperature of the ground water at and near the surface, from the entire mine, from portions of the mine, and from exploration holes drilled in the mine, were kept as the mine was developed. Where possible, ground water pressures in drill holes and changes in pressure with time, were recorded. The geologic, hydrologic and chemical data were correlated. The following conclusions were drawn from the correlations: The ground water in the Henderson mine occurs in fractures in Precambrian igneous and metasedimentary rocks and in a series of Tertiary intrusive rocks. Two zones of ground water were recognized; an active zone, in which the fracture systems are recharged and discharged annually into the surface water system, and a passive zone, in which the fractures were filled with water in the geologic past. Discharge from the passive zone is through mine workings that intersect the fracture systems. Discharge from a fracture or fracture system is initially high but decreased with tire!. The rate of decrease in flow (or pressure) is exponential. By measuring the change in flow with time, it is possible to calculate the amount of flow at some given period of time in the future. Based on changes in rate of flow and pressure, and the geology, and assuming rates of mining of the ore, it will be possible to predict the volumes of water that will have to be handled during the life of the mine and the area around the mine that will be drained by the mining operation.

The nickel-cobalt sulphides produced from limonitic laterite ores by Moa Nickel S.A. in Cuba are refined at the Corefco nickel-cobalt refinery in Canada. Major changes to the refining process were required when the Moa sulphide feed, with its unusually high cobalt content, was introduced in the early 1990's. In the period 1994 to 2005 the production capacity of the refinery has increased dramatically to match increases at Moa, and significant process improvements incorporated. The process flowsheet consists of the original ammonia leach process, optimized for cobalt chemistry and overall leaching capacity. Extraction of metal values is followed by the unique nickel-cobalt separation technology, in which most of the cobalt is separated from the ammoniacal nickel sulphate leach solution by precipitation as a nickel-cobalt hexammine salt. This salt is refined from a Co:Ni ratio of 1:1 to over 10,000:1 by selectively leaching nickel, redissolution and recrystallization in ammonium sulphate solution. Nickel and cobalt are recovered using the well-known Sherritt hydrogen reduction technology. This paper reviews the chemistry described above, examines some of the changes in operating conditions made over the years and highlights some of the recent physical changes made to the refinery.

Roughness of a discontinuity may be an important factor influencing shear strength of the discontinuity. Traditionally, determining the roughness of a discontinuity surface and providing a numerical measure of the roughness has required considerable effort or specialised equipment. The development of new 3D imaging tools that are easy to use has provided effective fast and accurate means of creating 3D surface models from which roughness measurements can be readily obtained. These new techniques are versatile enabling a user to measure roughness along any desired profile and at any resolution up to the limit of the spatial subtense of a measurement on the discontinuity surface. This paper primarily reviews extensions to the use of 3D imaging that enable the measurement of roughness. Additionally we provide some examples of the measurements and examine some of the issues associated with extracting measures from the spatial data that will support estimation of shear strength.

Membrane waterproofing systems in large tunnels cause the partial decoupling of the concrete liner from the rockbolted and shotcreted reinforced rockmass. This decoupling leads to a loose fit of the liner in the excavation when shrinkage from cooling and moisture loss occurs. This increases tensile stresses which require either the addition of reinforcing steel in excess of common European practice or the potential for liner cracking. Hot weather concrete placement and cold weather service conditions increase the magnitude of the problem, while creep of the rockmass reduces it. Contact grouting also reduces, but does not eliminate, the problem.

"In early 1995 Cluff Mining commissioned a newly constructed high density tailings thickener at its Cluff Lake uranium mill. The 85 ft diameter high density thickener is one of the first of its kind in North America, and incorporates the novel paste technology in its design to produce densified (in the range of 60 -65% solids) mill tailings suitable for stable deposition in the tailings management area. This paper discusses the impetus behind the installation of such an unconventional thickener, and the many trying experiences in making it operational.IntroductionCluff Mining, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cogema Resources Inc., is the operator of a uranium mine and mill complex at Cluff Lake which is located in northern Saskatchewan. Since 1980, the company has developed and mined out several different ore bodies within the Cluff Lake region for the production of uranium concentrates, commonly known as yellow cake. Based on the known ore reserves, the Cluff Lake operations are projected to last till the early 2000's.Tailings from the Cluff Lake mill have been discharged to a tailings management area consisting of a tailings pond and two facilities for primary and secondary treatment systems. The tailings pond has an impervious bentonite lined dam, and it is divided into a solids and a liquids holding areas. Until the beginning of 1995, the mill tailings were discharged in two separate lines to the solids pond; one line carried the slurry residue of 45-50% solids (w/w) from the CCD circuit, and the other discharged raffinate tails containing less than 1 % (w/w) gypsum precipitate. Supernatant in the solids pond is treated in the primary treatment system prior to discharging to the liquids pond. Figure 1 shows the site plan of Cluff Lake tailings management area.It has been estimated that by the end of 1995 the solids pond would be filled to about 60% of its design capacity, and probably would be full before the year 2000. Therefore, Cluff Mining had to consider a more efficient tailings disposal method that could extend the service life of the existing Cluff Lake tailings management area. A high density tailings thickener was believed to be the most practical and economical system for tailings disposal at Cluff Lake mine."

Mining steeply dipping coal seams is a difficult task in the mining industry. Prior to 1996, fully mechanized longwall mining methods along the seam strike direction were tried in China and other countries. Due to its larger coal reserve in steep seams, China made more but still limited progresses on mining in such seams than the other major coal-mining countries. In the last two decades, accelerated research efforts have been made to improve the mining technology in steeply dipping coal seams. Based on these works, a dynamic model of ?R-S-F? system under asymmetrical constrains in mining steep seam is established and the theory of strata control and hazard prevention begin to be formed. The key technologies for mining steep coal seams include: global and regional strata control methods in longwall face, methods for the longwall face machines to sustain static and dynamic loads, and flexible protection technology. These theory and technologies have been successfully applied to mining of steep coal seams of varying thickness and hardness, with hard and soft roof and floor, and with high potential of spontaneous combustion in China. In the recent years, the technology has been introduced to Russia, India, Uzbekistan and other countries where steep coal seams are mined.

Oxygen-flame converting of a solid ground matte containing heavy non-ferrous metals in a wide range of concentrations is one of the perspective trends meeting the demands of modern non-ferrous metallurgy. As. a result, of semicommercial tests on oxygen-flame smelting of nickel matte containing 13,5-17,5% Ni; 0,45-0,65% Co under continuous autogenous conditions a converter matte containing 68 8-75,0% Ni and 0,48-1-,0% Co and ferrite -calcium slag containing 1,4-8,4 Ni and 0,16-0,56 Co were pro¬duced. Nickel recovery in a converter-matte was 76,2%, copper - 58,'2% and cobalt recovery in. a slag was 90%. Slag cleaning in an electric furnace allowed to after-recover nickel and cobalt in an alloy to produce a dumpy slag containing 0,03% Ni and 0,02% Co. The development of modern' ecologically pure energy-saving autogenous technologies of the treatment of sulphide raw materials containing heavy non-ferrous metals makes certain demands of the perfection of a process of converting rich sulphide-metallic intermediate products obtained at autogenous smelting. These-demands were connected first of all with the fact that converting process stages because of process periodicity are more unfavourable from the point of ecology, power intensity and unit stability. Besides, during rich matte treatment the problems connected with heat shortage when using air blast and heat excess-when using top oxygen blast to treat luquid matte a-rise and when enriching air blast by oxygen up to 26% fast erosion of the brickwork of a tuyere zone takes place. The technology of Outokumpu and Kennecott companies-on solid- copper matte converting in a flash smelting furnace using air blast is not universal as its possibilities are limited by certain composition of mattes. Besides, flash smelting to produce highly basic or combined slags requires larger enrichment-of blast by oxygen or extra fuel feed. This paper shows the usefulness of geostatistical conditional simulation combined with the quantification of sampling errors obtained from the analyses of fundamental errors ? validated from duplicate data ? to assess the relevance of the quality and quantity of the information, for short-term mine planning purposes. Traditional blast-hole drilling equipment has been designed for efficient drilling, but not for obtaining high-quality samples. Furthermore, blast-hole sampling interferes with production, and thus usually produces poor-quality results. These results are the basis of short-term plans, where the grades of selective mining units are estimated and used for distinguishing between ore and waste. Under these conditions, misclassification (ore blocks sent to the waste dump and waste blocks processed at the plant) is inevitable, leading to significant hidden losses that can amount to millions of dollars per annum. Reverse circulation drilling with the latest automated sampling technology improves significantly the quality of the information used for short-term planning, and thus reduces misclassification, improving the financial returns of the operation. In this paper, we present the general methodology for assessing the effect of poor blast-hole sampling, as compared to advanced reverse circulation drilling grids at several spacings, in order to arrive at the most appropriate grid for short-term planning. This plan can be prepared well in advance using several additional variables that are usually not available when the plan is based on blast-hole samples. Furthermore, blending options can be analysed in order to optimize plant recovery, minimize the use of sulphuric acid, etc. Three case studies are presented, namely a typical porphyry copper deposit, an exotic oxide copper deposit, and a complex gold deposit, where mineralization is controlled by structures and lithology. This paper shows that in all cases, advanced reverse circulation drilling grids provide good-quality information that, coupled with the use of geostatistics for short-term mine planning, significantly improve the financial returns of the operation.

The paper describes solutions given to foundation problems during the reconstruction of a power plant set on fire, located adjacent to several still Working Units. After a detailed site and laboratory investigation, it was decided that it could be possible to include within the new foundations the preexisting cast in situ driven piles with enlarged base 50 cm in diameter and let them work with new 41 cm driven, cast in situ piles without enlarged base. Demolition of existing caps was carried out with expansive mortar in order to avoid any possible damage to piles, whose actual conditions were checked by several load tests. New piles were designed to support service load by shaft resistance, in order to limit total and differential settlement. When piles had to be driven adjacent to nearby structures, measurements of peak soil particles velocity were carried out while driving piles at decreasing distance from critical locations. By preboring most of the upper clay layer it was possible to reduce within safe limits for structures the induced vibrations.

NUMEROUS experiments in the past few years have proven that void formation occurs quite generally in the diffusion zone of bimetal specimens1-4 The phenomenon has been explained in terms of the accumulation of lattice vacancies resulting from unequal diffusion of the constituents and their eventual precipitation as holes.= Attention has recently been directed to the fact that voids also form within homogeneous metals during high-temperature creep.' The idea has been put forward that these voids form by the condensation of excess lattice vacancies generated by intersecting dislocations.".' If the precipitation of lattice vacancies from solution is treated as a nucleation and growth process, the predicted vacancy concentration for homogeneous nucleation of voids at an observable rate is 100 to 1000 times the normal thermal equilibrium concentration. It appears that voids actually form during diffusion at vacancy supersaturations which are much lower than this8 According to the calculations of Machlin,' the same must be true for voids formed in homogeneous metals during creep, if these are considered to arise from the precipitation of lattice vacancies. Therefore, if the vacancy mechanism is valid, it seems that the holes which form in diffusion and creep specimens are heterogeneously nucleated by imperfections or impurities in the metal. Irregularities in the frequency and distribution of voids in diffusion couples bear out this explanation.' , It is not known at the present time what the nuclei are on which vacancies condense. Various investigators have speculated that they could be certain dislocation configurations, already existing voids produced during solidification or working, gas pockets, or inclusions in the metal. Relatedly, the precise value of the degree of vacancy supersatura-tion for void nucleation is still uncertain. An initial attempt to estimate this value from diffusion data, made by Balluffi, indicated that voids form in diffusion couples at vacancy concentrations which may

A general survey of the mechanical properties of commercially pure beryllium fabricated from powder by vacuum hot pressing and other consolidation methods is presented. The effect of fabrication method, grain size, strain rate, and directionality upon both room and elevated temperature tensile properties is reported. BERYLLIUM metal, in spite of its rather restricted use, has been the object of attention for many researchers in the past half century. However, such work was performed on special experimental lots of metal made in small quantities by a variety of reduction methods. Not until 1946 was there a substantial production of beryllium metal, and not until 1950 was there a steady production of a commercially standard beryllium in the United States. This output was both the result of a requirement of the Atomic Energy Commission for a high grade beryllium of consistent quality and the development of a powder metallurgy process, by the Brush Beryllium Co., known originally as Process Q, which yielded a fine grained beryllium suitable for fabrication. Because this powder metallurgy product, known as QMV, superceded other types of metal made previously and represents the great majority of beryllium in use today, it seems worthwhile to present the results of studies on the mechanical properties of this metal as currently made. To the design engineer and the metallurgist, beryllium has extremely interesting properties. It is as light as magnesium alloys while having a stiffness modulus 40 pct greater than steel and a strength-weight ratio superior to titanium and aluminum alloys and aircraft steels. The melting point is high, 1287°C (2348°F), and it has good corrosion resistance both in air and water. Also, it is highly transparent to X-rays and has good heat and electrical conductivity (electric conductivity is greater than 40 pct of Cu). To the atomic energy program beryllium is considered a valuable material because of its low neutron-capture cross section and high neutron-scattering cross section which make it a good moderator and reflector for the lower velocity neutrons. A major technical difficulty limiting the use of beryllium, especially in structural applications, has been its notch sensitivity and consequent room temperature brittleness. Kaufmann, Gordon, and Lillie1 have reported their work on the mechanical properties of beryllium performed from 1946 to 1950. They studied the room and elevated temperature properties of cast and extruded beryllium and extruded electrolytic flake, Table I. Cast and extruded alloys of 85 to 99 pct Be were tested also. They found that extruded metal developed good strength and appreciable ductility in the extrusion direction and that thermal treatment and alloying provided little improvement in mechanical properties. They concluded that preferred orientation and fine grain size were the means of obtaining optimum tensile properties in beryllium. Other investigators have measured and commented on one of the most striking mechanical properties of beryllium, namely, its abnormally low Poisson's ratio.2 Udy, Shaw, and Boulger3 presented the latest published survey on properties of beryllium but their information is based only on published data available before April 1949 and cites little information on metal fabricated by powder metallurgy

GEOLOGICAL studies have revealed the occurrence of hundreds of pegmatite dikes in north- east Brazil, Fig. 1, in the three states of Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba, and Ceara. Heretofore data have not been available on the possible production of lithium minerals from these areas, and in March, April, and May 1953 the author undertook a reconnaissance survey covering a cross-section of the pegmatites. Sixty-one pegmatites were examined. The pegmatites of Rio Grande do Norte and Paraiba are located in an arid region (Seratao), and except in the most southerly portion there is a mini- mum of vegetation and overburden. The region is easily prospected and relatively accessible by jeep or truck. The pegmatites examined in Ceara are in an area of lush vegetation along the flanks of the Jaqueribe River valley. It is therefore more difficult to prospect, and the dirt roads, as a means of access, leave much to be desired. For all practical purposes rail transportation, except in Ceara, is not available. The rocks of the area1-4 are composed of Pre-Cambrian schist, gneiss, quartzite, and marbles. They have been intruded by granites, monzonites, and diorites and cut by quartz veins and pegmatites.

For several years an investigation has been in progress in the research laboratory of The American Brass Co. to determine the thermal and electrical conductivities of most copper alloys of commercial importance and several of scientific interest. This paper contains such data on the binary alloys of copper with silicon, aluminum, manganese and nickel, and on a large number of ternary or more complex alloys. Some interesting general relationships between the thermal and electrical conductivities for all copper alloys at all temperatures are pointed out. The data for the copper-zinc, copper-phosphorus and copper-tin binary systems have already been published1,2 † except for the electrical conductivity at 200" C., which is given in the appendix of this paper. Literature on Thermal Conductivity of Copper Alloys The papers referred to above contained a summary of the figures available in 1929 for the thermal conductivity of copper alloys. There is given in Table 1 herewith a selection of the data that have appeared since that time. The measurements of Hanson and Rogers3 are particularly interesting since they cover a series of alloys in the alpha solid solution range and show the effect of heat-treatment. Their alloys were tested as annealed castings, and are not therefore directly comparable to the worked alloys measured in the present investigation, although the difference is small. Bailey's determinations4 were carried out on the alloys used by Lees6 in 1906, and extend his results to higher temperatures. It is most unfortunate that the alloys were not analyzed, for the approximate compositions given are hardly sufficient identification of the material. It is equally to be regretted that neither Hanson and Rogers nor Bailey give data for the electrical conductivities of their samples. Sager6, using the heat-wave method of King, determined the thermal conductivity of copper, nickel and four alloys of the two metals. His results are included in Table 1.

The past decade has brought significant changes in the use of risk-based criteria for safety within the U.S. Department of Defense. The Range Commanders Council (RCC) chartered a working group to develop and define risk acceptance criteria for protecting the general public and mission essential personnel from debris from launch ranges. This working group has continued to develop and update RCC Standard 321 as the needs of the ranges and range users have evolved. A revision to RCC Standard 321 is near finalization and will include casualty criteria, guidelines for assessing risks due to other flight hazards in addition to inert debris, and an overall risk management process for range safety. This paper reports on work in progress and includes several precedents which may prove important to the explosives safety community.

This paper uses the results of research trials by Landcare Research and Forest Research Institute and assessments of reclamation plantings at mines and other drastically disturbed sites to describe methods of enhancing restoration of native forests. The characteristics of mine and forest environments are compared to highlight the difficulties facing restoration and techniques which result in successful restoration are described. Selection of the most appropriate technique is illustrated by describing restoration of lowland beech-podocarp forest at a West Coast coal mine. The key to successful reclamation is to understand the factors controlling and limiting plant establishment and growth, then to design rooting media, surfaces and management regimes to create a favourable environment. This paper concludes with a summary of the planning and technical factors which are critical for successful restoration of native forest.

"Secondary materials have long been processed at the S-furnace of the Mitsubishi continuous copper smelting and converting process at Naoshima Smelter and Refinery. Intensive recycling in the recent years has formed concerns that impurities in the secondary materials may cause drastic changes in the chemical properties of the CL-slag, which is separated from matte in the smelting stage. Among various impurities included in secondary materials, the authors have studied the influences of sodium oxides in the CL-slag because the behavior of sodium oxide has scarcely been studied with respect to the copper smelting slag. The examinations have been applied experimentally on the distribution between slag and matte of arsenic whose acidic characteristics suggest strong affinity to sodium-oxide of basic characteristics in silicate melts. The results have been discussed by thermodynamic evaluations and the results of pyro-tests at the commercial furnace.IntroductionAt Naoshima Smelter and Refinery, the existing line of the Mitsubishi continuous copper smelting and converting process has been operated since 1991. The Mitsubishi Process consists of three furnaces namely the S-, CL- and C-furnace as shown in Figure 1. In the S-furnace, copper concentrate and powdery secondary materials (scraps, sludges, etc) are charged through the top lances with oxygen enriched air. The other secondary materials of lumpy shapes are charged through the chute installed on the furnace roof. Charged materials are smelted by the reaction heat in accordance with the oxidization of copper concentrate. The mixed melt of matte and slag overflows through the launder into the CL-furnace, where the melt is separated into slag and matte by the difference of their specific gravity. Matte is siphoned out and sent to the C-furnace and converted to blister copper continuously. The CL-slag overflows continuously through the slag outlet to be water-granulated. Granulated slag is sold as a raw material used for the cement production and so on. Various secondary materials have been processed at the S-furnace of Naoshima Smelter and Refinery. Barite Worldwide barite production for 1985 decreased 1.3%, while US barite production increased 1.4%, according to US Bureau of Mines statistics. The increase in US production is attributed to heavy demand for oil and gas drilling during the first quarter and an unrealized heavy expected demand in oil and gas markets for the last quarter. Nevada accounted for 82.1% of the 807 kt (890,000 st) of barite produced in the US last year, according to the Bureau. Other producing states were California, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, Tennessee, and Washington. In 1985, the US imported 1.8 Mt (2 million st) of crude barite and 64 kt (71,000 st) of ground barite. China led the way with 43.3% of the total. Imports from India accounted for 21.6%; Morocco, 15.5%; and Thailand, 5.6%. The 1.8 Mt (2 million st) of crude barite imported is an 18.8% increase over 1984. Apparent consumption of barite for 1985 was about 2.6 Mt (2.9 million st), a 15.7% increase from 1984. Due to very low drilling rig activity during the last quarter of 1985, actual consumption is probably less as crude barite inventories at mines and plants increased. According to the Bureau, 90% of barite consumed in 1985 was for the oil and gas market. Paints, rubber, glass, and other chemical uses consumed the other 10%. With the price of oil falling dramatically early in 1986, the outlook for oil and gas drilling looks to be significantly lower than 1985. This lower demand for barite, coupled with the high year-end inventories, should lower both imports and domestic production. Significant lower prices on imported barite are expected, especially from China, Morocco, and India. This also could further lower US production of barite this year.
