"As mining reserves continue to be developed in deeper and more complex geological and geometric conditions, there has been an increased demand for underground mine designs to better reflect site-specific conditions, measurements, and observations with respect to ground control safety and stability. Current ground control design software are limited to a given device and data files generated can only contain a single design. However, with the growth of cloud computing and increases in internet access, even underground where permissible, web-based software applications allow for in-the-field calculations, as well as collaborations, from multiple users. webGroundControl (webGC) utilizes a multiple-tier architecture, building upon existing NIOSH ground control design software, more specifically ARBS, ALPS, and ARMPS. By providing operators the ability to access ground control design programs from any device, given an internet connection, webGC allows for on demand calculations to ensure underground pillar and roof stabilities with respect to current site-specific parameters, geometries, and geology. Through the development of new features, which aid in design analyses, as well as project collaborations, webGC provides the modern engineer with a more versatile ground control design tool for the improvement of underground health and safety. With the completion of the ARBS, ALPS, and ARMPS modules, this paper introduces potential users within the mining industry to the navigation and operation of the webGC application, as well as its ability to facilitate collaborations between operational personnel and planning engineers. The purpose of this paper is to raise interest in the web-based application before its official launch in Summer 2018."

For several years the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington have been cooperating, in a study of coal tabling. The first pert of the work consisted of experiments using, one of the commercial-sized coal washing tables in the laboratories of the College of Mine. As an outgrowth of this work, hindered-settling classification has been successfully applied in the tabling of coal4, and several important improvements, mainly in the riffling, have been made in the table itself. Both of these developments have resulted in increasing the rapacity and efficiency of the coal-washing table. In order to facilitate further progress in this work an investigation has been undertaken to throw more light on the mechanism of table separation. BETTER understanding of solid surfaces and their associated adsorption products is of both academic and practical value. The study of detergents and their behavior in cleaning surfaces is fundamentally related to the nature of the products adsorbed and their ability to compete for certain surfaces. Similarly in flotation, the nature of the adsorbate before and after adsorption is basic to clear understanding of the process. The recently developed pellet technique1,2 employing infrared spectroscopy provides a powerful tool for the study of solid surfaces. Absorption bands, which are infrared-active, may be observed for adsorbed products. Also any changes in the surface substrate that occur as a result of adsorption may be detected by means of differential spectra. In applying the pellet technique to solids of large surface area, French and his coworkers3 have surveyed the adsorption of organic flocculants on clay minerals, oleic acid on fluorite, and ammonia on cracking catalysts. Recent work on application of differential infrared spectroscopy to the study of solid surfaces' has demonstrated that the difference between a sample and a reference can be obtained with double-beam instrumentation. In this way displacement of surface products, adsorption of new products, and differences in the substrate, if any, may be detected. Experimental Procedure: Potassium iodide pellets were used in this study, prepared from recrystallized analytical reagent grade KI. Grinding was carried out in a Fisher mechanical agate mortar. Two-gram plates containing the solid under study were pressed in a special evacuated die constructed in the laboratory at the University of Utah." Concentration depended on the solid in question. Zinc sulfide and willemite are sufficiently transpar- ent in the infrared region for concentrations as high as 20 mg of mineral in 2g of KI to be used. Zinc oxide is even more transparent, permitting concentrations as high as 60 mg in a 2-g plate. For non-differential operation, however, much lower concentrations (2 to 10mg/2g KI) had to be used. Spectra were obtained on a Per kin-Elmer 21 double-beam recording infrared spectrophotometer. A sodium chloride prism was used giving a spectral range of approximately 2 to 15 v wave length. For differential runs a resolution of 1000 was used and the scanning speed was controlled commensurate with instrument response. The response was checked continuously and each spectrum was repeated several times. For nondifferential runs a resolution of 927 was used. Zinc oxide used was analytical grade oxide fume. The zinc sulfide was precipitated from solution with analytical grade zinc sulfate and sodium sulfide. The precipitate was washed and centrifuged several times and dried. Before use the precipitate was washed in dilute HCl and then treated with saturated NH4Cl to remove any bulk oxides and sulfates. X-ray patterns of the precipitate were comparable to that of the natural mineral sphalerite. Large differences between macro and micro grindability relationships have been discovered for mill design measurements using the patented SAGDesign(TM) test. Crushing, Rod and Ball Mill Wi tests, and breakage parameter measurements have previously been used to design SAG mills but have not revealed the true magnitude of these differences. A SAGDesign(TM) test measures the SAG/Bond Wi Ratio (defined below) for every sample tested and gives a good design result because the F80 of the SAG stage test feed is 19 mm and because the test includes a Bond Ball Mill Work Index on SAG ground ore. Good flotation operation demands properly sized grinding mills and steady feed to the flotation circuit.

In 1987, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 11,069-acres of the 12,290-acre Eldorado Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-423) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Clark County, NV, adjacent to and northeast of the town of Nelson. There are inferred subeconomic resources on the Paul (gold, silver), Bel (gold, silver), Big Horn-Inez (silver, copper, lead, zinc) claims, and Montezuma (gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc) patented claim group in the Eldorado study area. Because of lack of exposures, tonnage and grade on these properties could not be determined. No resources were identified for the other five properties examined in the area. The southern two-thirds of the area is in the Eldorado mining district, a base- and precious-metal district which has been intensely explored for over 100 years. Nine claim groups were examined in the study area. Eight claim groups are within the Eldorado district and include the Montezuma (patented -M.S. 3966), Bel, Eldorado, VAR, SINJUN, Paul, Rusty Bit, and Big Horn-Inez. One property, the Flintstone claim group, is north of the Eldorado mining district at the north end of the study area.

This report describes the investigational work on the development of a fire-assay method capable of concentrating, in a button of nickel sulphide, all six of the platinum-group metals present in samples of ores, concentrates, and mattes. In the method adopted, the sample is fused with a mixture of sodium carbonate, sodium tetraborate, nickel carbonate, and sulphur. The nickel sulphide formed during fusion collects the noble metals and carries them to the bottom of the crucible. The nickel sulphide button is dissolved, and the noble metals are isolated and determined. The coefficients of variation range between 1,0 and 4,9 per cent for the various platinum-group metals when they are present in concentrations between 0,3 and 75 p.p.m.

Making a tunnel through solid rock can sometimes be a dangerous task. Many things must be considered in order to complete such a task safely, and efficiently. Prior to starting things must be known such as, the type of rock, the purpose for the tunnel, the destination point, then angle of decent (or ascent). Once these things are known, the method to proceed must be considered. Factors such as cost, feasibility, and time to completion must be taken into account.

A tertiary amine containing polyamine in its back bone was grafted to exfoliated graphite oxide by means of a series of chemical reactions.The synthesized amine functionalized polyaniline grafted to exfoliated graphite oxide (EGAMPANI) was characterized using various techniques such as, FTIR, TGA, Raman, and X-Ray diffraction.The synthesized EGAMPANI was blended with carbon paste electrode, and used to study the response of Hg2+ in acetate buffer solution.Preliminary analysis showed that the anodic current intensity using the EGAMPANI modified electrode was higher during a potential sweep and 10-4 M concentration of mercury could be detected which could be improved to 10-6 M using anodic stripping voltammetric technique. [This is the third report related to fundamental retail roof-bolting research in underground mines (1, 2)3/ and describes an investigation of the torque-load relationship for 3/ -inch, expansion-type mine roof bolts. In a previous investigation the relationship between torque and bolt load was established for 1-inch slotted-type bolts (1). The two types of bolts differ in diameter and method of tightening and consequently may exhibit different torque-load behavior. The 1-inch bolt is tightened by turning the nut, the 3/4-inch bolt by rotating the beaded bolt itself. Experience indicates that roof bolts should be tightened to moors satisfactory anchorage sand to minimise nag of tie roof over the mine opening. The generally accepted means for determining the bolt load is to see a torque wrench to measure he torque applied in tightening the bolt and, from a predetermined relationship between torque and molt load, to, determine the corresponding bolt load. Because frictional effects may vary between one type of shell assembly or bolt and others, 7 types of expansion shell units and 3 types of 3/4-inch-diameter, mild steel bolts were tested.]

The performances of ten field-scale experimental final covers were evaluated over an eight-year period. The covers were evaluated as part of the rehabilitation of acid generating coarse coal reject dumps and opencast coalmines in the Northern KwaZulu Natal province in South Africa. The main purpose of the experimental covers was to restrict rainfall infiltration into acid generating coal discard. The mean average rainfall over the monitoring period was 839 mm with 84 per cent occurring between October and April. The average evaporation was 2100 mm. The site is described as a ædry siteÆ since the evaporation exceeds rainfall by a significant margin. Approximately 30 per cent of rainfall infiltrated the uncovered cells. Rainfall infiltration into the fine coal discard was reduced to 20 per cent and 15 per cent for a 300 mm and 500 mm cover respectively. Infiltration was reduced to ten and 12 per cent of rainfall for fine coal discard provided with a 1000 mm double soil cover and a compacted bottom layer. This relatively high infiltration was probably caused by moisture being entrapped in the bottom retentive layer, and not being released by evapotranspiration. The best performing cover comprised 1000 mm single soil with a compacted bottom layer and infiltration was reduced to four per cent of rainfall. Rainfall infiltration into sloped cells varied between seven per cent and 14 per cent of rainfall. The computer software, SoilCover, was used to predict infiltration and moisture content in the cover. Predictions of rainfall infiltration were accurate, but were less accurate for covers where the hydraulic properties of field compacted soils were not adequately characterised. Oxygen ingress was significantly reduced for cells provided with a 1000 mm cover. Oxygen concentrations were generally below one per cent, with the exception during exceptionally dry periods when the cover dried out, resulting in increased oxygen ingress. For other covers, and the uncovered cells, oxygen concentrations were close to atmospheric concentrations. During the eight-year monitoring period, acid breakthrough occurred in five of the cells, including three uncovered cells, one cell with a 300 mm cover and one sloped cell. In contrast, cells covered with 1000 mm, bottom compacted soils shows a marked improvement of leachate quality, indicating that sulfide oxidation processes have been slowed. There was a distinct relationship between oxygen ingress and leachate quality for all of the cells. No cover degradation was evident over the eight-year period, except for some erosion observed on a sloped cell. The results indicate that the onset of acid drainage can be delayed by perhaps hundreds of years and salinity loads can be reduced by more than 90 per cent, if coarse coal reject dumps in the KwaZulu-Natal provinces in South Africa are provided by an adequate cover system. These research outcomes can be extrapolated and applied to other dry site regions where similar materials are being considered.

Considerable difference of opinion seems to exist as to whether the rate of air flow when a fan is placed on a given duct should be determined by the use of static pressure or total pressure characteristics. A little study will show that both methods are correct. Assume that a fan is connected to a duct by an expansion piece as shown in Fig. 1, and that steady flow is established. Considering the atmospheric pressure as zero pressure, let the static head at the outlet of the fan be h and the velocity at this point be vl. The total head at the outlet is then h + „"• The total head at this point must be equal to the total head at the end of the duct plus the losses that have occurred between the two points. The static pressure at the outlet of the fan is the static pressure of the fan and it is also the static resistance of the duct from that point to the end. The friction in the straight duct is f. If the duct were the same area as the fan outlet, would be the static resistance of the whole duct system. The time and amplitude statistics necessary to adequately describe electromagnetic (EM) noise in mines are illustrated through computer software techniques. They are 1) Allan Variance Analyses (AVA), 2) Interpulse Spacing Distributions (ISD), 3) Pulse Duration Distributions (PDD), 4) Average Crossing Rates (ACR) , and 5) Amplitude Probability Distributions (APD) . These statistics are illustrated using data taken from a rather large store of raw analog data recorded in operational mines. The curves generated for the illustrations characterize the noise environment in the mines from which the corresponding data were taken, and should aid in the design of reliable communication systems for such mines.

The rate of the heterogeneous reaction between titanium-oxygen solid solutions and titanium trichloride in molten sodium chloride was determined at high temperatures. In the alpha phase, the reaction rate decreases uniformly with the increasing concentration of oxygen. The gamma crystalline form of titanium (above 33 atomic percent oxygen) was much less reactive than the alpha phase, and the reaction rate approached zero at 50 atomic percent oxygen. The activation energy for the reaction of titanium-oxygen solution containing 22.8 percent oxygen was 11.7 kcal/mole of TiCl3 as compared with 8.3 kcal/mole of TiCl3 for pure titanium.

Right in the heart of Boston Harbor lies Deer Island, where a ten-year, 6 billion dollar sewage treatment plant is under construction. The 9.5 mile long, 25.5' diameter Effluent Outfall Tunnel is the center piece of this program. A Robbins double-shielded TBM is currently driving this challenging tunnel some 400 feet below sea level. This paper will discuss the set-up and operation of this Tunnel Boring Machine in driving the longest single heading tunnel ever built in North America.

Mine planning is difficult. Even for small operations, it involves reasoning with complex variables and the practical difficulties of mining. It is also about predicting and planning the future in an unpredictable physical and economic environment. Yet we rely on a handful of individuals and their spreadsheets to tell us how to do it û planning the business and activities of mining to hopefully produce results that will please stakeholders. Does it work? Not as well as it could. Planning affects everyone in the organisation. Company executives are demanding more reliability and stability in cost and revenue forecasts from their operations. Management want to explore ways of being more cost effective. Miners and contractors want more useful plans and realistic targets. And the planners have to describe the method that will translate business objectives into implementable plans. Even with the use of computer technology a lot of effort is expended to produce plans that are largely qualified by the level of knowledge and experience of individuals. Better use of information and the application of Intelligent Technologies can improve the quality and reliability of mine plans and schedules. By capturing the knowledge within the organisation and speeding up the planning process, Intelligent Technologies allow more options to be considered more rigorously. But it is not just about technology. It is about how technology is implemented and embodied in the way the business is managed for performance. When this happens, the real benefits of better planning start to flow.

"INTRODUCTION The Camp Bird mine was investigated by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ September 22 and 24, 1942, and April 29 and 30, 1944. In a subsequent report and supplement, it was recommended that core drilling be done below the 14th. level to determine if commercial ore existed at greater depths, and particularly if ore existed in the vein or adjacent thereto where it passes into the sedimentary formations estimated to underlie the volcanics approximately 400 feet below the 14th level.Seven diamond-drill holes aggregating 3,956 feet were drilled. Four of these holes were under the Hematite ore body and three were under the Big Discovery ore body. Two holes under, the Hematite ore body wore directed at angles but little steeper than the angle of dip of the vein and penetrated the sedimentaries beneath the volcanics close to the vein. Enough low-grade ore was found at the base of the Telluride conglomerate to indicate the presence of a large body of low-grade zinc sulfide ore. Two holes were directed to crosscut the vein at a depth of approximately 125 feet below the 14th level. No commercial ore was cut, but the vein showed the average width and same general characteristics as at the 14th level. One hole under the Big Discovery ore body was directed to crosscut the vein and test the base of the Telluride conglomerate in the footwall block. No commercial ore was found in either the vein or the sedimentary horizon. One hole was directed to test the base of the Telluride conglomerate in close proximity to the vein in the hanging-wall block. This hole was lost approximately 100 feet short of its objective, and a third hole was drilled to accomplish this same thing. Sample results suggest the only mineral resources in the study areas are placer gold deposits along the South Fork Kern River in the Woodpecker RARE II unit (fig. 1). These deposits, in Rockhouse Basin, total 4.5 Figure 1.--NEAR HERE. million cu yds (3.4 million cu m) of indicated subeconomic gold resources in four deposits of "older" gravel. Gold value in samples averages $0.36 per cu yd ($0.47 par cu m) and is as much as $4.44 per cu yd 1/. Cost of mining the gravel and recovering the placer gold is estimated to be more than $2 per cu yd ($2.62 per cu m) for a deposit of this size and type. Additional inferred subeconomic placer gold resources with similar grade probably occur in four other deposits of "older" gravel on which no mining claims were located. Placer gold occurrences on upper Trout Creek contain gold worth as much as $4.50 per cu yd ($5.88 per cu m) 1/. Average grade is much lower, and only about 1,000 cu yds remain (760 cu m). These occurrences do not constitute a resource, but may attract hobbyists not dependent upon making a profit.

The Falkirk Mining Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of The North American Coal Corporation, is located 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Bismarck, North Dakota. Falkirk is under contract to provide 5.08 mil- lion tonnes (5.6 million short tons) annually to the Coal Creek Generating Station, an 1100 mega- watt electric plant owned by the Cooperative and United Power Associations of Minnesota. Coal Creek is located 2.4 kilometers (1 ½ miles) south of the Mine. Electricity from the plant is transmitted to rural electric customers in Minnesota via a 400-kilovolt D.C. power line.
