Nonferrous and ferrous smelting industries have recently faced the unavoidable necessity of changing and/or improving the smelting technologies as a result of the use of new raw materials which are becoming available from different geographical areas. These new feed materials usually contain different ore composition and higher level of minor components, which adversely affect the smelting process. Due to the problems encountered in several processes as a result of this feed diversification some work has been undertaken in order to make uniform the feed and avoid later surprises in the smelting process. However this has proven to be very difficult and sometimes almost impossible. In this work a more viable approach is undertaken to deal with this problem. It consists of controlling not the cause of the problem i.e. the feed composition but instead the results of this feed change, i.e. the end-point of smelting technologies. It is shown that this approach, when carried out through advances physicochemical modeling and simulation tools is not only easier and less costly but it also helps the control optimization and automation of the smelting processes. Several examples are given and future work is underlined.

Discus¬sion during this session was thus largely concerned, directly or indirectly, with communication between computing and mining personnel, and as such was relevant to the symposium as a whole.Mr A. Weiss set the tone of this discussion by referring to `user-orientated systems'. He congratulated Mr Burne in this regard, pointing out that his long-term production scheduling program, as a computer system, was similar in approach to the manual system it replaced, and was therefore easily understood by planning engineers. He asked whether the schedule engineer had his 'hands on' the system, to which Mr Burne replied that the engineer did in fact spend several days running alternative schemes through the computer. Mr Weiss commented on the advantage of having terminals on site for this sort of engineer-computer interaction. He also commented on the flexibility of Mr Burne's approach to scheduling and how preferable this was to a one-step optimization package. This was brought home by a question from Mr H. D. Small: Mr Burne's program sometimes found it necessary to temporarily halt an advancing face, and he asked whether the logic of the program could be altered to avoid this (e.g. by suitably slowing down the rate of face advance). Mr Burne replied that it was in fact easier for the planning engineer to sort this problem out manually. The way in which the computer results were presented made it particularly simple for the production engineer to see how to avoid or remedy a stopped face.On the technical side, both Mr Weiss and Mr H. M. Wells questioned Mr Burne on the handling of grade control by his program. From answers by Mr Burne and his colleague Mr K. H. Thomson it emerged that a spot-check on grade every now and then was all that was necessary at Mufulira, and that the idea of actual grade control was more a question of short-term than of long-term planning."

Cr-Ni-Cu¦PGE deposits are known to occur in early Archaean mafic-ultramafic rocks. Early Archaean mafic-ultramafic (MUMF) rocks occur in the western Dharwar craton and range in size from small pods to schist belts. These MUMF pods consist mainly of meta-peridotites, tremolite-actinolite schists, serpentinites, amphibolites and metabasalts. Spinifex, nodular and ocelli textures are also present. The rocks have been subjected to greenschist and amphibolite facies metamorphism. Geochemical studies were undertaken to evaluate the possible occurrence of economically important elements in the mafic-ultramafic enclaves around the major Arsikere-Tavarkere lineament and surrounding gneissic terrain adjoining local shear zones that occur as discontinuous pods between Arsikere and Chennagiri. Talc-serpentine and tremolite- actinolite schists contain chromite which is rimmed by ferrit-chromite. A notable feature of these MUMF rocks is that they exhibit high MgO (22 - 40 per cent), total iron (8.34 - 10.01 per cent), Ni and Cr (~3000, 2800 ppm) contents, with some samples showing komatiitic affinity. The rare earth elements (REE) data show slightly fractionated patterns with enriched LREE (LREE/HREE ~5.0) and negative europium anomalies. The Pt and Pd values reach 6500 and 191 ppb. The MUMF rocks, especially those exhibiting high chromium contents and occurring near shear zones, are potential hosts for economic platinum group element (PGE) deposits.

A pile driving and testing program was undertaken to evaluate installation procedures, assess capacity, particularly in uplift, of 360- and 460-mm (14- and 18-inch) square prestressed concrete piles and provide foundation design parameters for the New Mid-Point Bridge project in Fort Myers, Florida. Nine piles were dynamically monitored during installation, and six piles were monitored during restrike driving to evaluate pile drivability and uplift and bearing capacity including time related capacity increases due to soil "set-up". In addition, two static load tests (tension and compression) were performed to calibrated the results obtain during the dynamic testing. This paper presents descriptions of the pile driving testing program along with findings regarding pile uplift and compression capacities from the static load testing, pile capacities from dynamic testing (CAPWAP® analyses), soil-pile adhesion values, wave equation factors, soil strength vs. time dependency, foundation design (anticipated pile tip elevation) and pile driving recommendations.

Today's increasing needs for rapid excavation have stimulated efforts to break rocks without explosives. The application of electric energy for this purpose has been studied by a number of investigators. Following principles have been used in electrical rock breaking: 1. induction heating5 2. high frequency heating4, 14 3. microwave heating6 4. contact resistance heating9,12 5. resistance heating11,13 6. electron beam heating1, 3 7. plasma jet heating2, 8 8. arc heating7 9. condensor discharge energy14 In this paper the presentation of the principles of electrical fragmentation is limited to a process called "electrofracing". This technique uses electrical heating of rock by electrode contact resistance9 and resistance heating" phenomena. The electrically induced stresses inside of rock generate forces which break up the material. The fracturing of ore takes place by tensile stresses instead of compressive forces. The electric energy merely creates fractures in the rock and the separation of fractured material takes place by subsequent mechanical handling. Energy requirements in secondary breaking of iron ores have been about one to two kilowatt-hours per ton of ore. Power requirement is a function of the degree of fragmentation.

The presence of considerable mineralization at the surface together with other favorable conditions suggested inclusion of the Nigger Jim diggings area in a comprehensive study of shallow lead deposits in southwestern Wisconsin. The area, which was the site of considerable shallow development some 60 to 70 years ago, offered the possibility of substantial quantities of lead at near-surface horizons. The investigation included completion of 30 churn-drill holes totaling 1,808 feet of drilling, 2 diamond-drill holes totaling 164.5 feet of drilling, and 25 feet of test pitting in two excavations. The degree of mineralization was determined in an area l,500 feet long and 150 to 300 feet wide along a mineralized trend that has not been investigated beyond the limits of the zone drilled by the Bureau of Mines.

A significant portion of the, coal mined by U. S. Steel is beneficiated to upgrade the quality of the resultant coke to meet blast-furnace requirements. Primarily because of degradation from modern mechanized mining methods, a considerable quantity of the coal to be beneficiated is in the 1/4-inch by 100-mesh size range. In the cleaning plants, this coal is usually cleaned on concentrating tables and then mechanically dewatered in solid-bowl centrifuges to 9 to 14 percent water. At some plants, to further decrease the amount of water shipped with coal, and to improve the coking characteristics of the coal at its destination, mechanical dewatering is followed by thermal drying. At U. S. Steel's-Alpheus preparation plant at Gary, West Virginia, approximately 50 percent of the total coal produced is in this fine size range, and two fluidized-bed dryers are used for the thermal drying step. The two fluidized-bed dryers are 14 feet in diameter and were designed by the Dorr-Oliver Company. Although the original design called for a rate of drying equivalent to 37 tons, of moisture per hour, presently they are removing twice that amount. This paper describes, the major problems encountered' in operating these dryers at the present, high capacities and how they were overcome.

"The aim of this paper is to study the numerical modeling of the crushing process in a jaw crusher with complex motion jaws using Discrete Element Method (DEM). The main goals are to ensure the conformity of numerical simulation results to the experimental data, optimize the operating modes and the crusher design and develop automated verification and calibration methodology. It is offered to use automated selection of mathematical model parameters using large- or laboratory-scale experiments instead of deriving parameters from conventional intensive material tests (e.g. drop-weight test). Experimental data were obtained from a large-scale crusher designed and manufactured by the company “Mekhanobr-Tekhnika”. Both jaws have their drive shafts located asymmetrically; one jaw is driven in the upper part, the second at the base. The crushing process involves fragmentation of single smoothed rectangular granite particles of the same weight. During the experiment, the required parameters such as particle size distribution were obtained for further computer simulations. Based on the obtained experimental data, the Rocky DEM model was built. Simulation breakage parameters were calibrated using automated parameter selection methodology based on multiple set of parameter-controlled simulations. A good correlation of the experimental data and numerical simulation data was obtained. The methodology in combination with well-known capabilities of simulation modeling will help reduce the research time in the development of new mineral processing equipment.INTRODUCTION Preparation of rock mass for enrichment includes the power-consuming processes of crushing and grinding. Initial rock mass crushing is performed by means of drilling and blasting operations. To reduce the average size of a rock piece, primary crushers, mostly jaw crushers, are further applied. The advantages of the jaw crusher are simple design, easy maintenance and repair. One of the drawbacks is large oscillating masses and, thus, high power consumption during operation (55 - 200 kW). Jaw crushing simulation will help optimize the crushing process and improve further rock transportation and processing performance."

In Japanese tunneling history, it has commonly been accepted that the long-round driving is difficult due to the complicated geological condition. Therefore, the maximum past record has been less than 3 m per round. A new record of advance was established in the 99 m2 headrace tunnel of Imaichi Water Power Station Project with an advance of 239.5 m in a month by drilling 3.9 m deep blast holes. The geology of the headrace tunnel composed of pyroxine andesite (ie. 960-1770 kg/cm2, VP3.1-4.3 km/s) which had several clay seams and open cracks and was moderately weathered. Automatic shotcrete machine was used for shotcreting. Rock support was specified according to the N.A.T.M. with each different rock type. The contractor achieved a remarkable tunneling advance not earlier experienced in Japan.

ABSTRACT The inevitable uncertainty in modelling spatial variables decreases as more data become available. This reduction depends on the properties of the variable being modelled. Spatially continuous variables show less uncertainty for a given spacing than erratic variables. A geostatistical simulation based approach is developed to quantify the relationship between uncertainty and data spacing. Reference realizations are sampled to condition additional realizations and quantify uncertainty. The procedure is automated, making it straightforward to consider sensitivity and different geological domains. Although most in situ operations in Alberta do not encounter significant problems during resource extraction, there have been a few documented occurrences of oil or steam releases as a result of compromised caprock seals. The objective of the Oil Sands Caprock Integrity Project (OSCRIP) is to characterize the units above and below bitumen zones to determine which geological factors affect the quality of the caprock seal. In addition, geomechanical properties and stress measurements of the bitumen reservoir and overlying units will be examined to provide a better picture of the containment conditions in which in situ operations occur. The information from this study will aid regulatory staff and industry in determining the zone-specific geological and geomechanical factors that could affect the design, operation, and feasibility of in situ recovery projects. The OSCRIP study area (Townships 87 to 99 and Ranges 1 to 13, West 4th Meridian) encompasses the surface mineable area, the northeast extent of the Wabiskaw-McMurray bitumen deposit and the Clearwater Formation, as well as a wide band of the Devonian salt-dissolution zone. Regional geological mapping of the Cretaceous strata focuses on the spatial extent and thickness of the caprock seal. Mapping of the underlying Devonian strata is targeted at better understanding the potential effects of salt dissolution and collapse of overlying strata on the integrity of the caprock seal. Examination of LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) bare earth DEM in the study area has revealed localized depressions that may represent sinkholes rooted in subsurface collapse features in Devonian carbonate and evaporite strata. Mapping the location and understanding the timing of salt dissolution-related features and deformation in the Devonian strata will help address questions about the possible effect that geological structures, such as sinkholes, have on the integrity of the caprock, as well as the potential for localized variations in the stress regime of the bitumen zone and overlying units. The stress regime in units above 350 m is such that any induced fractures are believed to be horizontal, and therefore, there would appear to be no mechanisms that would allow these fractures to reach the surface. However, recent incidents have shown that vertical pathways can occur, linking the subsurface to the surface. The final phase of the project will evaluate the changes that may occur in the stress regime under thermal operating conditions in the study area.

Quality control (QC) of reverse circulation drill sampling commonly involves regular duplicate subsampling to monitor the extent of imprecision or random error in the subsampling system. In gold mining in Australia, the subsampling tool is usually a cone splitter.Other sources of error, including delimitation error and bias (systematic error) in the subsampler are often assumed to be negligible or ignored for being too difficult to QC.This paper describes actual sampling errors and error mitigation based on quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of surface and underground reverse circulation drill sampling at a high-nugget gold mine at Sunrise Dam, Western Australia.CITATION:Carswell, J T and Sutton, K, 2014. Certain observations from the field and laboratory suggest the need for recasting some of our ideas about gypsum as a rock-forming mineral and in relation to supplies for industrial use. Until about 25 years ago, the use of gypsum was confined almost entirely to agriculture. During the past quarter century, though, its usefulness has been greatly developed, particularly in the building trades, which now absorb most of the gypsum produced. In 1919, according to the U. S. Geological Survey, the output of crude gypsum was 2,240,163 tons, a gain of 912 per cent. in 25 years. About one-half of this production was mined in New York, Ohio, and Michigan, where the proved supplies can hardly be regarded as over-large when viewed in relation to the rapid expansion of industrial requirements. The occurrence of gypsum in the United States is treated by R. W. Stone and others.' The deposits of Canada are described by L. H. Cole. Several states, including Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Michigan,and New York, have made special surveys of their gypsum deposits, but the reports, as a rule, refer to conditions as they existed from 15 to 20 years ago. Association of Gypsum and Anhydrite The two calcium sulfate compounds, gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) and anhydrite (CaS04), are the more stable forms of a series which includes at least two other members, so-called half-hydrate (CaSO4.1/2H20) and soluble anhydrite (CaS04). Each of the latter readily takes up water to recrystallize as gypsum and consequently is incapable of existence under ordinary geological conditions; also each can be prepared from gypsum by the application of heat within certain temperatures, the process on which is based the manufacture of commercial plasters. If the temperature limitations are not observed, the result of the calcination process will be insoluble anhydrite which, compared with the soluble form, takes up water very slowly so as to be of no practical use, although actually it is soluble and in time is convertible into gypsum like the other forms.

"This research represents a shift away from empirical models that lock the industry into 50-year old inefficiencies with little response to operating variability. The mechanistic and intrinsically dynamic mill model under development steps up to a new paradigm using the latest computing capabilities and physical understanding of breakage and transport to transform predictive capabilities for design, optimisation and on-line control with variable feed. The milling process is broken down into discrete sub-processes, each of which can be modelled as an object in the whole model and in the model code. These objects can be upgraded or exchanged without having to rewrite or restructure the remainder of the code. Sub-processes include: feed into mill; transport along mill; presentation to impacting events; range of impacting forces; probability of being impacted in different zones in the mill as a function of particle size and density; suspension in slurry; and discharge out of the mill. The unit and processes surrounding the mill (feed and recycle conveyors, slurry pump and pipe, cyclone and recycle crusher) have also been modelled, in order to incorporate the effect of recirculating load coming from a cyclone or a recycle pebble crusher, respectively for ball mills or SAG mills. Each unit is modelled dynamically and PID controllers have been added to control pumping flowrate from sump and water addition for cyclone feed dilution. The paper demonstrates the predictive capability of a dynamic, mechanistic model and is used to test the sensitivity to the sub-processes, comparing different formulations and highlighting the aspects that require further development. Validation on pilot tests and application to industrial data is presented. This approach is currently undergoing industrial trial on sites, for use in on-line model-informed process control. Considerable further development is required to incorporate the full mechanistic structure planned for this model."

Permissible blasting units are approved with the understanding that if actively marketed they will be listed as permissible so that all interested in such safety equipment may know what is available. The last detailed lint of permissible units was published as Technical Paper 4294/. All of the blasting units of that list have become obsolete or have boon modified as covered by extensions of the original approvals.

This report covers the preliminary phase of an investigation of clays, shales, and certain rocks in Wisconsin to determine the feasibility of processing lightweight aggregate in the State. The study was extended to include rotary-kiln testing of a limited number of shale samples, and to an appraisal of the Maquoketa shale resources in eastern Wisconsin. A total of 45 samples of clays, shales, and other argillaceous rocks of Wisconsin were tested. The lower Maquoketa shale is the only material found to date that offers possibilities as a source of material that can be processed in a rotary kiln for lightweight aggregate. Bedrock occurrences of the Maquoketa shale are found in the eastern and southwestern parts of the State. The populous southeastern region of Wisconsin presents a large potential marketing area for lightweight aggregate. For this reason special study was directed to the Maquoketa shale in the eastern district.

Hong Kong continues to display a remarkable enthusiasm for undertaking ambitious tunnelling schemes despite apparent recessions in the Asian economy. This paper provides an outline of tunnel projects currently under construction, those recently tendered and a glimpse of the extent of forthcoming projects which, according to Government sources, carry a price tag of HK$ 200B. Committed works will cost about HK$ 15B and involve a variety of TBM and drill and blast tunnels. These include the recently tendered works for KCRCÆs West Rail and MTRCÆs Tseung Kwan O railway extension, together with five no retendered TBM drives for the Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) following forfeiture of the works by the Campenon Bernard-Maeda JV in mid-1997. The JV claimed unreasonable specifications leading to unacceptable levels of water inflow and dangerous working conditions. Key technical issues that are now arising in Hong Kong are:the general use of design and build contracts for bored tunnel contracts;a trend to accept TBM options for relatively short drives in urban areas;the use of æfixed-priceÆ contracts which in the current competitive market, can encourage tenderers to take contractors to take very high risks; andthe difficulty of predicting and managing water inflows in rock tunnels.This paper also includes a new empirical method of predicting water inflows in rock tunnels, and makes recommendations for managing these on-site.

Trenching, sampling, and core drilling in Stillwater and Sweetgrass Counties, Mont., by the Bureau of Mines have delimited over 5,000,000 tons of chromite ore containing more than 20 per cent chromic oxide. The Benbow and Mouat-Sampson mines have been developed and are fully equipped for mining and milling 500 tons and 2000 tons a day, respectively. Introduction The Montana chromite deposits were the first to be explored under the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939. In June of that year, the Bureau of Mines started exploration by trenching, test pitting, sampling and diamond drilling, and completed the project in March 1943. The U. S. Geological Survey cooperated by mapping the geology and logging the cores. The project was to determine the extent and grade of the chromite ore and to indicate sufficient reserves to justify development and exploitation of the deposits for the national emergency. Exploration has indicated that the district contains the largest and most important reserve of chromite ore in the United States. The Benbow and Mouat-Sampson mines have been developed and a 500-ton concentrating mill has been constructed on the Benhow property and a 2000-ton mill on the Mouat-Sampson property. Concentrates were produced from the Benbow mill three months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when the nation's major chromite supplies from foreign sources were cut off. History It has been known for 50 to 60 years that some chromite deposits existed in an east-west belt along the north escarpment of the Beartooth Mountains about 25 miles north of Yellowstone Park, but nothing was known of their size and extent until the war demand of 1917 and 1918 stimulated the search. In those years two properties in the Stillwater region were actively developed, but no shipments were made. The Benbow property was located in 1918 by a local group. The property comprised seven claims along the strike at the east end of the belt. An adit was driven several hundred feet on the Eclipse claim. The seven claims were sold to the Chromium Products Corporation of Livingston, Mont., and were subsequently patented. In 1929, an eastern group obtained an option, installed some equipment, and erected several log cabins. The "crash" in the market in 1929 caused the operators to drop their lease, and the property remained inactive until 1939, when the Bureau of Mines began its exploration. Fourteen claims were located on the Boulder River in 1918 and subsequently patented by the U. S. Chrome Corporation.

Since the 1950's, production of ferronickel from laterites has predominantly been achieved using the Rotary Kiln -Electric Furnace (RKEF) process. The productivities of kilns and furnaces have increased steadily over the years and metallurgical smelters can now rely on a smaller number of high-powered, reliable units to meet production objectives at much lower capital and operating costs per tonne of production. Modem RKEF plants are characterized by one or more process lines consisting of one large kiln feeding one large furnace. The current benchmark is one RKEF line with a high capacity kiln feeding an 80 MW furnace to process approximately 1.3 million tonnes per year of new laterite ore. It is proposed that a single RKEF line comprising one kiln producing 240 t/h of calcine feeding a 120 MW furnace could process 2 million tonnes per year of dry new ore which, for an ore grade of 2% nickel, is equivalent to 36,000 t/y of nickel per line. The plant could also be twinned to double the capacity to 72,000 t/y of nickel. This paper reviews recent developments in kiln and furnace technology, which enable substantial increase in productivity of an RKEF plant. The reduction in the capital and operating costs of a single-line, 2 million tonne of ore per year nickel laterite facility, and accompanying improvement in energy efficiency and environmental performance compared to existing operations, are also highlighted.

Although the effects of sea level changes on ore concentration processes are to some extent obvious with certain deposits, e.g. beach placer deposits, they have been largely overlooked with others such as Mississippi Valley type lead-zinc deposits. It is contended that sea level variations may have more profound effects on a wide range of deposits than has previously been appreciated. These deposits include not only placer'and residual deposits but also stratiform copper deposits, Mississippi Valley type deposits, stratiform manganese deposits and Minette type iron deposits. Sea levels in paralic basins profoundly affect the influx of 'detrital sediment, and this has to be suppressed to allow for the accumulation of thick rich deposits of coal evaporites, phosphate or metalliferous sediment. Emergence can be associated with oxidized waters, erosion, and,solution of soluble rocks. Submergence can reverse the Eh trend and can lead to preservation of ores. Both realms of surficial sedimentary environments and subsurface diagenetic environments can be affected by changes in water pressure, gas pressure (pC02), Eh, pH, and temperature as sea levels fluctuate. Even relatively small sea level changes may have profound effects. For example, there is some evidence to suggest that when the level dropped below 100 metres about 10,000 years ago, the Red Sea became isolated by the sill at Bab el Mandeb in the south, and evaporated away to leave a series of shallow lakes. The Red Sea is 1 to 2 km deep. It was at times such as this that the well-known copper-zinc mineralization developed in the Red Sea trough. Changes in sea level also affect the stability field of gas hydrates which can yield large volumes of gas leading to mass movements on the sea floor (Warnke, 1986).
