Drilling with 180 to 200 PSI air pressure, instead of 100 PSI for air and/or churn drills, has decreased our primary costs by approximately one half.

Hanging wall deformation monitoring at the Kiruna Mine is a major concern for Luossavaara- Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) since underground production is deepening towards the Kiruna Town. In the quest for more effective monitoring techniques, LKAB decided to evaluate satellite-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry?s ability to monitor ground subsidence by generating continuous deformation maps from satellite radar images. While adopted by other geoscience-related industries, SAR interferometry is still relatively untested in the Mining industry. This paper describes how subsidence is actually monitored on the Kiruna Mine?s hanging wall and gives an insight on SAR interferometry?s principle. The encouraging results are discussed as well as the technique?s benefits (continuous deformation mapping, low cost, fast, etc) and limitations (sensitivity to snow and vegetation cover).

The surfrrce-diffusion coefficients (DJ for Aulg8 on (100) and (111) surfaces of copper have been determined between 1050" and 780°C using a new avuzlysis imd experimental procedure. The results are: D, has also been determined fm cua4 at 870°C, and the values found are 4.5 times larger than those measured by the grain boundary grooving technique for the same surface orientations. This difference is felt to result from the approximate nature of the mathematical solution used in the present work. Attempts to measure D, for silver on copper and silver surfaces indicated a means of matter transport different from surface diffision was dominant in moving tracer from the source out over the surface. Cnlculations and experiment both indicate that this is the flow of silver through the vapor phase which completely masks the much smaller flow due to surface diffusion. The previous self-difhsion studies of D, for silver and copper are discussed in terms of our own analysis and found to yield values of D, factors of lo5 or more greater than those found by the grain boundary grooving tech -nique. UNTIL about 5 years ago it was widely believed that the activation energy for surface diffusion, AH, , was less than that for grain boundary diffusion, AHb,, which in turn was less than that for diffusion through the lattice, AHz.' This was concluded from various evidence that D,> Db>Dl, and one tracer study of D, for silver on silver from which AH, was inferred.2 In 1959 Mullins and Shewmon demonstrated that D, could be determined from the kinetics of the growth of grain-boundary grooves.3 Using this procedure, Gjostein measured D, on copper between 800" and 1050°C and found that the activation energy was roughly equal to AHl .4 Subsequent work on copper,5" silver,',' and goldg between the melting temperature T, and 0.87 T, confirmed that AH, as determined using the grain boundary grooving or scratch-relaxation technique was equal to or greater than AHz. During the same period, Drew and Pye again determined AH, for silver on silver using a tracer techniquelo and a mathematical solution similar to that of Nicker son and arker.' Though the values of D, Drew and Pye measured at any given temperature were about 200 times smaller than those reported by Nickerson and Parker, they again found a low activation energy of about 10 kcal, or about one fifth that found at the higher temperatures with the mass transport technique. A distinguishing characteristic of these two previous tracer studies is that they have worked at low temperatures (-1/2 T,) where they felt volume diffusion was negligible and then analyzed these data as if all tracer atoms leaving the source flowed out into and remained in a homogeneous high-diffusivity surface layer of undefined thickness. This is totally different from the model used in the mass-transport studies or the studies of grain boundary diffusion, which assume the high-diffusivity surface layer to be only a few angstroms thick. If this latter model is applied to the earlier tracer studies, it is shown that the tracer has really pe!etrated into the lattice a mean distance of 1000A. Thus the tracer distribution observed after an anneal is thought to be due to the combined effects of surface and volume diffusion. Independent of the relative validity of the two models, it seems evident to us that any comparison of the values of D, as determined in these two ways is meaningless and misleading, since the values of D, and AH, obtained in these two ways would be totally different for the same physical distributions of tracer. Once the fundamental difference in the approaches of the two techniques is established, we are faced with the question of which model better approximates physical reality. Here all the evidence seems to be on the side of the ''thin surface layer" analysis. In fact, the authors of Refs. 2 and 9 do not argue for the "thick-layer model" we have described; they simply invoke it through the equation they use to calculate D, . The primary evidence for the thin-film approach is: a) grain boundary grooves and scratches widen in proportion to tU4 and Mullins' rigorous analysis shows that this is only valid for a surface layer which is quite thin relative to the width of the groove;11 b) all accepted or seriously discussed models of solid-vapor interfaces and high-angle grain boundaries assume that the disturbed region of the interface is at most a few a0 thick. In June 1997, Mount Polley Mining Corp., a division of Imperial Metals Corp., completed an 18-kt/d (20,000 stpd) gold-copper mine in central British Columbia. Fast-track construction and extensive off-site construction were combined with an aggressive project schedule to build the mine in one year. This was three months ahead of schedule and 7% below the original budgeted cost of C$123.5 million (US$86 million). The Mount Polley Mine was the first of a crop of new open-pit mines in British Columbia. The Mount Polley deposit has been explored since the mid-1960s when it was known as the Cariboo Bell property. From 1988, Imperial Metals completed drilling and metallurgical testing on the deposit. This led to a positive feasibility study and the issuing of a Mine Development Certificate in 1991. The project was later shelved due to falling metals prices and the strength of the Canadian dollar. In late 1994, Imperial merged with Bethlehem Resources Corp., bringing a strong project team to the company. The deposit was then re-evaluated, ore reserves revised and additional metallurgical testing was performed. The result was a revised project plan. It indi¬cated that a financially feasible gold-copper mining op¬eration could be constructed at Mount Polley operat¬ing at 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd). In May 1996, an agreement was reached with Sumitomo to jointly fund and develop the project. By early 1996, final plans and permits were being prepared for construction, scheduled to begin in June 1.996. On-site work commenced on May 28th, 1996 following lifting of the road restrictions. Mount Polley Mining acted as its own project manager. Construction was completed in June 1997. Plant runup took place in July and full production began in August. Through the use of off-site construction and the careful selection of contractors who cooperated to complete some 12 major contracts, it was possible to reduce the mine and mill construction time from 16 to 13 months. Off-site construction for all possible aspects of the work and the use of used milling equipment allowed significant savings in overall capital costs of construction. Total costs for the mine, mill and tailings dam equated to C$6,100/t/d of throughput. The mill design incorporates several innovative features that will aid maintenance and allow flexibility of operation. The operation is designed as a closed system and meets the latest environmental standards. Concentrate is shipped by truck to the port of Vancouver. Revenues for the mine come from the mine's production of about 3.1 t/a (100,000 oz/year) of gold and 10.8 kt/a (24 million lbs/year) of copper during the first four years of the 12-year mine life.

Estimates of the cost of producing any commodity generally fall into several classes depending upon the motives and needs of the estimator. There are estimates intended to show how low costs might be with favorable conditions if everything goes well. At the other extreme, there are estimates which show how high costs might be if troubles develop. The estimates in this paper for the cost of producing direct reduced iron (DRI) are accompanied by discussion to point out how the final figures may be adjusted in either a promotional or a conservative direction. Because we do not have a specific process and a particular set of conditions in mind when discussing this subject today, this paper deals with the general situation, with considerable attention to how the estimates can be made more specific once one knows the particulars of a given situation.

A number of private companies and universities have developed computer programs which can be used to simulate surface coal mining by dragline. In this paper, we briefly discuss the concept of computer simulation, compare these computer programs with each other, describe the major changes required to convert these programs to an IBM computer system, and analyze their sensitivity to inaccurate input data. We also present a summary of the required data input for each program, core storage requirements, and output results. Sources for obtaining these programs and their documentation are listed at the end of the paper.

The Ohio Coal Testing and Development Research Facility (OCTAD) was commissioned in 1992 by the Ohio Coal Development Office and the Ohio Power Company to support evolving process technologies that will lead to increased environ- mentally sound use of coal. OCTAD is equipped with advanced physical concentration devices and processes capable of beneficiating coal to levels beyond conventional practice. The first task of OCTAD operators was to test the cleanability of the Meigs Creek Seam Coal in advanced circuitry and compare the results to conventional cleaning levels. In testing the seams, OCTAD circuitry was configured to produce middlings on the coarse and intermediate size fractions. These middlings were subsequently crushed to a finer size (28M x 0) and subjected to cleaning in fine heavy-media cyclones and advanced froth flotation circuitry. Nearly thirty-six full-scale production runs at various operating conditions were completed during the campaign. The results of the test program are examined in this paper.

MOULD*—Has consideration been given to the problem of retreating the 4,000,000 ton tailings pile to recover the very considerable amount of asbestos fiber that was lost over the years due to insufficient operation and poor recoveries? Also, what was known about the possible content of chromite and the sulphides of nickel and cobalt? M. J. MESSEL (author's reply)—Consideration was given to the problem but nothing concrete has been done up to this time. W. P. MOULD—I am certain the tail- ings contain a very considerable quantity of fiber, not all of which is in the shortest lengths, because in the milling of talc rock from a neighboring location having a common origin with the asbestos bearing serpentine source of the tailings pile, a concentrate carrying 15 pct Ni and Co in complex sulphides and constituting about 4/10 of 1 pct of the talc rock was recovered. In the belief that the tailings also contained an appreciable content of chromite (then in demand, 1937) it was suggested to the management of the asbestos company that a truck load of the current tailings be sent to the flotation plant of the talc company where it would be put over the concentrating tables in an effort to discover the presence and roughly the percentages of chromite, nickel, and cobalt. Preparations for the test were woefully inadequate and the test was completely snarled up by the surprisingly large quantity of asbestos fiber from 1 in. long down to very short fiber, all of which matted up and plugged launders and pumps with disastrous effects and practically the total loss of the sample. If anything was indicaded by the test, it was that a wet process for milling asbestos was worthy of very serious consideration. M. J. MESSEL—A wet milling process for tailings retreatment only, is at present under study at our plant. One asbestos mining company in Canada has constructed a fairly large test plant for this purpose, but as yet no definite results have been obtained other than in a small test unit plant which were in some respects quite encouraging.

This paper outlines the results of a study of opinions of practicing engineers concerning the value of environmental engineering courses in a mining engineering curriculum. One hundred engineers with significant experience in mining-related engineering work were carefully chosen. Of the sixty-seven responses received, about half were from mining engineers and half from environmental engineers. The results of the survey are outlined in detail. The number and type of courses recommended by the respondents are summarized as well as the specific topics recommended for inclusion in a mining engineering curriculum. The survey form also asked for the stages in the mine life when environmental experts were needed and the percentage of environmental engineering performed by outside experts for many mining-related environmental tasks. The results of this line of questions are provided. Finally, the paper offers a comparison of the results for environmental engineers and mining engineers and analyzes the differences.

"Abstract - The East Sullivan Stock (ESS) is a small, composite felsic alkaline pluton of presumed late Archean age in the Val d’Or mining district. Three main facies have been distinguished: monzonite sensu stricto, porphyritic monzonite, and green trachytic porphyry. This monzonitic group of rocks is of relatively homogeneous composition with high abundances of Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo and LREE. The alkaline ESS is distinguished from other igneous units in the Val d’Or mining district, such as the Bourlamaque Batholith, by relatively high concentrations of Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cu and Au. The ESS hosts many base (Cu, Mo) and precious (Au) metal occurrences, including: (1) porphyry style Cu-Au-Mo disseminated sulfide deposits, (2) Cu-Au deposits in volcanic rocks near the ESS contact, and (3) pyritic gold mineralization in east-west trending shear zones. The ESS is well defined by concentrical zoning on the aeromagnetic vertical gradient color map, and displays four linear trends, which are assumed to be structural lineaments, at 035°-055°, 320°-300°, eastwest, and north-south. The main mineral occurrences related to the stock display a preferred spatial association with the east-west linear magnetic trends.The ESS is preferentially located along a major structure and was emplaced late in the evolution of the Abitibi subprovince like other felsic alkaline plutons. This stock is similar to late-tectonic mineralized felsic alkaline intrusions of the Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake mining districts in Ontario, and to the Allard stock in the U.S.A. which is associated with gold and base metal mineralization. Similarities also exist with younger alkaline plutons associated with Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposits in the Canadian Cordillera, which formed in tensional tectonic environments. The felsic alkaline magma may have formed by partial melting of deeply buried supracrustal rocks, concomitant with the development of deep fractures such as the Cadillac Fault. In such an environment, hydrothermal solutions carrying remobilized metals from deep supracrustal rocks may have deposited gold and base metals in structural traps. Plutons similar to the ESS should be good targets for mineral exploration. Résumé - Le Stock de East Sullivan (SES) est une intrusion composite alcaline d’âge tardiarchéen, situé dans le camp minier de Val d’Or. Trois principaux faciès ont été identifiés: une monzonite sensu stricto, une monzonite porphyrique et un porphyre trachytique vert. Les données chimiques montrent que ce groupe des roches monzonitiques est relativement homogène en composition avec des concentrations élevées de Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo et ETRL, définissant une suite alcaline typique. Cet alkalin stock peut être facilement distingué des autres unités géologiques de la région de Val d’Or, tel le batholite de Bourlamaque, par une concentration élevée de Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cu et d’Au. Le SES contient plusieurs importants prospects de métal précieux (Au) et de métaux de base (Cu, Mo), incluant: (1) une minéralisation disséminée de type porphyre Cu-Mo-Au, (2) une minéralisation de Cu-Au dans les roches volcaniques encaissantes hôtesses près du contact et (3) une minéralisation d’or pyritique dans une zone de cisaillement de direction est-nordest. Le SES est bien défini sur la carte aéromagnétique en couleurs du gradient vertical par des zonages concentriques, où quatre linéaments structuraux ont été reconnus: 035°-55°, 320°-300°, est-ouest, et nord-sud. It is with some trepidation that I approach my subject, for I know that I shall at once incur the suspicion of the mechanical engineer, with his concern for boiler tests and efficiencies; of the mining engineer, with his mechanization problems; and of the chemical engineer with his unit processes. Nevertheless, it must be recognized that the technology of fuels, the systematic body of knowledge relating to the production, processing and utilization of mineral fuels, has grown to such proportions and involves so many widely diverse applications of fundamental science and engineering that it behooves us to stop and consider just what its status is in relation to other technologies, as well as in relation to the present and future needs of the social order. The time has come when technologists, applied scientists and engineers must consider the possible effects that their achievements may have on Society. The development of a machine to - -replace -several hundred men is a fine achievement when considered solely from the point of view of creative endeavor. But what of the men who are displaced by the machine! Does not the responsibility for the development of this machine embrace as well the consequences of obsolescence and technological unemployment resulting from such development? I believe that it does and that we must recognize this fact in our practice of engineering and tech- nology as well as in the training of future engineers and technologists. Magnitude of the Fuels Industry Fuel technology is the body of knowledge that relates to the mineral fuels. The fuels industry is by far the most important of all Our mineral industries. The chart in Fig. I, reprinted from U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular No. 6643, indicates the compartive values of metals, fuels and other nonmetallic minerals for the year 1929. Of the grand total of 13¼ billions of dollars in value of minerals at the mines, the mineral fuels contributed 48 per cent. Coal, with 34.4 Per cent, exceeded the value of any other single mineral. In fact, the value of the production of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines alone anand exceeds the value of the gold production of the entire world. Petroleum and natural gas in 1929 contributed 14.3 per cent and 3.3 per cent, respectively, of the total value of world mineral production. So much for the world picture; let us now look at the situation in the United States. Over the 60-year period 1880 to '939, $46,409,727,000 of metal1ic products, $80,788,852,000 of fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas, natural gasoline) and $27,871,-ooo,ooo of nonmetallic minerals other than fuels were produced. After German reunification the mining industry in former East Germany was profoundly restructured. Beside privatization of profitable companies the public sector took over responsibility for the mining operations to be shut down. Therefore state-owned companies cope with technical, ecological, and social challenges. The rehabilitation and reclamation has to rededicate former mining areas to new use and provided new jobs as well. In the lignite mining districts there are around 100,000 ha of mining area, a mining caused disturbance to the groundwater balance and to the system of surface water bodies of approx. 390,000 ha. They are called the largest landscape construction site in Europe. In addition to the results and diverse experience achieved over the past 23 years, a description will follow of our new challenges and of an outlook on remaining tasks. This article will describe the financing, as well as aspects of the jobcreation policy arising from lignite industry remediation.

The 5-mile long Bay Tunnel is a major water supply facility to be constructed under the San Francisco Bay and adjacent marshlands between the San Andreas Fault to the west and the Hayward Fault to the east. The tunnel will have a two-pass lining system consisting of a watertight precast concrete segmental initial lining and a welded steel pipe final lining. Considering the Bay Tunnel?s location between two major active faults, the design earthquake produces a significant peak ground acceleration estimated at approximately 0.6g. To develop a design that can achieve the seismic performance objectives, full dynamic seismic analyses were performed using site-specific earthquake time histories. The analyses considered soil-structure interaction and an evaluation of the transverse and longitudinal effects of the design earthquake. This paper describes the seismic analyses and the design measures recommended to minimize potential adverse effects of the design earthquake on the tunnel final lining.

Polycrystalline Ti-rich NiTi thin films have been deposited from a single NiTi target using a DC magnetron sputtering system. Free standing film was obtained by using a single crystal silicon substrate. Thickness ofthe thin films is controlled at around 12 pm. In this investigation, the effect of deposition temperature on the microstructure and transformation temperatures of the thin films is studied. Influence of post heat treatment temperatures on the properties of the thin films is also investigated. Transformation temperatures of the thin films are determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The surface microstructure of the thin films is studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the crystallinity is determined using x-ray diffractometry. It is found that the thin film deposited on a hot substrate is crystalline even when the substrate temperature is as low as 300°C, while the normal crystallization temperature for an amorphous thin film is around 500°C. The microstructure of the film deposited on a hot substrate shows a very fine grain size. The grain size increases with increasing substrate temperature during deposition. The effect of post deposition heat treatment on grain size is minimal.

A prospecting project for deep-seated sulphide ore bodies will be expensive and means a considerable economic risk. The high costs depend on the demand for extensive drilling. It is therefore important to find effective methods to estimate the outcome of different prospecting strategies. The results from a preliminary study of the possibility of using mathematical methods for this purpose are presented. We have found that mathematical methods, especially simulation technique, might be an important tool in such exploration work. A mathematical model of an ore field and of a drilling procedure has been constructed. A set of parameters describes the geometry, the size distribution and the intensity of ore bodies. Another set describes the geometry and the intensity of drill holes. Some preliminary results are given of Monte-Carlo simulations and probability calculations.

A study of paleogeography and paleo-environment, coupled with modern geochemical techniques and geologic inference, points to the presence of unconventional platinum group metal deposits in domestic and foreign ultrabasic terranes. During the laterisation of the tectonized and serpentinized mafic and ultramafic rock units, onshore winds provided abundant low temperature chloride to the laterite-saprolite profile. Here, an environment formed where gold, silver and platinum was dissolved, transported and redeposited. Changes in climatic conditions have helped preserve the redeposited metals in fossil laterites. The definition of "unconventional mineral resources" used here is taken from the Cameron Volume of Unconventional Mineral Deposits published by SME-AIME in 1983: "Unconventional mineral resources represent materials of possible economic importance that occur in geological or physical environments that have not been successfully exploited for the particular mineral." (van Rensburg, 1983). Chromite-rich rocks worldwide contain high platinum group metal concentrations. This feature is found in ophiolitic sequences, Alaskan-type ultrabasic complexes or statiform intrusions. Association of platinum group metals with chromite has received much attention. The reason for that associa¬tion, however, is not clear. Much has been written about how and where the platinum group metals occur. It is known that they are present in the spinel lattice, as solid solution elements in sulfides and as discrete platinum group minerals. This article outlines the reasons geologists should be looking at lateritic terranes to determine the feasibility of searching for undiscovered, low-grade platinum group metals amenable to openpit, bulk mining. Laterite-saprolite horizons could contain significant platinum group metals and location of anomalous values on the surface and in the weathered profile can lead to discovery.

It may seem to be almost unnecessary to occupy the time of the Institute in further consideration of a question which has been so comprehensively treated in papers already on file in our own Transactions and in those of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Unfortunately, however, the results of these concerted efforts have not been materially to increase our stock of Knowledge in the direction sought for; and as the necessity for this information is becoming.more and more apparent as the demand for structural materials increases, it is believed that by continuing the agitation by means of discussions in this and kindred societies, whose members are vitally interested in obtaining reliable data as to the properties of the materials they are called upon to work with, public opinion may be educated up to the importance of exerting such an influence upon the law-makers of the country as will result in the formation of a competent board, with adequate means at its disposal, to carry out this great work in a manner alike acceptable to the makers and users of the materials in question. It may be proper in the first place to glance briefly at what has been attempted thus hr, then to indicate some of the more important lines of needed investigation, and finally to consider reasons why government aid may with propriety be sought for in carrying on the work. At a convention of the Society of Civil Engineers held at Chicago June 5th, 1872, it was, on motion of General William Sooy Smith, resolved, that, " Whereas, American engineers are now mainly dependent upon formula for the calculation of strength of the different form of iron and steel, not based on experiments upon American materials and manufacture; and " Whereas, There differ greatly in many of their ch~racteristics front thoae of foreign production, both in their nature and forma: therefore,
