During the last several years, implementation of trusses, in lieu of wood cribs, has been successful for supplemental tailgate support in the Pittsburgh seam. This paper reviews the truss support system provided by the new high strength 0.6" tensioned cable truss, which is now also being used in cribless tailgates. Cable loading and roof deformation were monitored to evaluate roof and floor performance. The test results indicate that the cable truss system successfully controlled the roof and floor during the first and second panel extraction. This paper will describe the advantages of cable trusses and their load transfer mechanism as well as mine evaluation.

Newmont?s Phoenix mine started production in March of 2006. Due to the extreme hardness of the ore, the mill has struggled to meet throughput projections. Grinding studies showed that optimizing the existing circuit would not achieve budgeted throughput. These studies also showed that the pebble crusher was being underutilized due to the inability of the SAG mill to break the rock. The concept was developed to supplement the feed to the existing pebble crusher with a secondary crusher. Models of this process looked favorable so a portable crusher was installed to test the process. The temporary crusher was successful at increasing the throughput by 7% and based on the operating data, plans are currently being developed to install a permanent secondary crushing system in front of the SAG mill. This paper will review the results from the test crusher and the flow sheet for the permanent secondary crusher.

The high-temperatzrre solulion calorimeter has been modified and an extension dynamic analysis of i/s transient behavior has provided an improved basis for interpretation of the experimental data. The partial molar heats of mixing, Him, of aluminum, copper, and silicon in the corresponding binary liquid-iron alloys haz,e been measured directly at 1600°C. The resulls in kcal per g-alom are: THE high-temperature1,2 solution calorimeter was planned and designed to obtain directly the partial molar heat of solution of solute elements in a variety of liquid metals that might serve as solvents. Results obtained in the temperature range of 1000° to 1200°C were described in the two earlier publications. However, a long-term goal in the program has been to obtain measurements at 1600°C of the heats of solution of elements in liquid iron. Hence, subsequent to the work last reported,2 and based on the experience of the first two studies, the calorimeter system has been modified and operated at 1600°C to obtain measurements on the Fe-Si, Fe-A1, and Fe-Cu systems. This paper reports the results of the work. THE MODIFIED SYSTEM It was clear from the earlier results that the most precise measurements can be obtained with the high-temperature solution calorimeter when the solution time is less than approximately 30 sec. This can be achieved only when the bath temperature, Tb, is above the melting (liquidus) temperature of the solute material being dropped. A second point of importance is that the refractories used earlier liberated considerable water so that, although the oxygen potential of the atmosphere in the system was satisfactory for work with nickel and copper, it was too high for work with iron, silicon, and so forth. Third, for work at 1550" to 1650°C, an improved temperature-sensing unit is needed. The modified calorimeter in its latest form is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The refractory brick and the Kanthal-Super heating elements which formed the furnace for heating the solute addition have been replaced by a smaller resistance-heated tube furnace which is insulated with bubble-grain alumina. A more elaborate gas purification system was installed to maintain a satisfactorily low oxygen potential in the atmosphere of the calorinieter chamber and of the solute addition furnace. As was the case in the earlier work, at the beginning of a run the calorimeter chamber is evacuated and then filled with purified argon so that a total pressure slightly in excess of 1 atm is maintained during the run. When either of the furnaces within the enclosure attains a red heat, 6 pct H2 is added to the atmosphere. Throughout the run, gas from the calorimeter is circulated through a de-oxidation system at the rate of approximately 5 standard liters per min; the changeover time for the gas within the calorimeter enclosure is approximately 1 hr. The essential stages of the deoxidation system are: a copper furnace at 600°C, a drying tube of anhydrite, and a titanium furnace at 800°C. The oxygen potential of the gas stream in the purification system can be monitored at several points by a stabilized zirconia oxygen cell. This cell is invaluable in detecting the development of leaks in the container vessel and the gas circulating system. The use of SO2/air gas mixtures as an oxidant to precipitate Mn from Co(II) leach liquors was investigated. The effects of SO2/air ratio, pH and temperature on Mn precipitation were evaluated. It was found that the use of SO2/air gas mixtures resulted in significantly higher Mn precipitation kinetics compared to using air or pure O2 alone. The SO2/air ratio was varied from 0% to 6% SO2(v/v) in air and similar Mn removals were achieved at 0.75% to 3% SO2 at pH 3. The solution pH was varied from pH 2 to pH 4; Mn precipitation did not increase considerably from pH 2 to pH 3, but increased significantly at pH values higher than pH 3. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased as pH increased, with 1% Co co-precipitation at pH 3. An increase in temperature from 30°C to 60°C also increased Mn precipitation and 100% Mn precipitated at 50°C. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased significantly with an increase in temperature. An activation energy of 25 kJ/mol was calculated from the Arrhenius plot, which is an indication that the precipitation reactions were both chemically and diffusion controlled. XRD analysis showed that Mn precipitated in the form of Mn2O3 instead of MnO2 that was predicted from thermodynamic data. SEM and XRD analysis also revealed that the precipitate consisted mainly of gypsum or bassanite (99%), with the Mn containing phase (< 1%) distributed within the gypsum phase. An increase in electrical resistivity during aging or after quenching from high temperatures is known in a large number of alloys. Plastic deformation of alloys in this condition leads to a decrease in resistivity. This anomaly has been called the K effect. This effect has been reported in Ni-A1 alloys by several authors.&apos;-4 The nickel-rich solid solution y is in equilibrium with Ni,A1 (y&apos;) with CkAu structure. With this alloy it is therefore possible to produce a homogeneous solid solution as well as a coherent mixture of y and y. The changes in resistivity should be determined for these two conditions. In the present literature on the K effect no distinction is made between them, because of experimental difficulties to determine small coherent particles. In the present work transmission electron microscopy and image formation by (100) and (110) superlattice reflection of the y&apos; phase was employed for a detailed determination of the temperature dependence of solubility of aluminum in nickel and the resulting microstructures with alloys up to 15 at. pct Al. The solubility line follows the equation indicating a smaller solubility than given in the literature at temperatures below 700°C. X-ray scattering was used to get evidence for short-range ordering in the homogeneous solid solutions.5 Parallel to the determination of the microstructure electrical resistivity was measured as a function of aging tempera- ture, time, and aluminum content, which led to the following results: 1) Resistivity increases slightly during aging of a homogeneous solid solution which was quenched from a high temperature as a consequence of short-range order, Fig. 1, curve c,. 2) Resistivity shows a maximum during aging of all alloys which are heterogeneous according to the phase diagram, but which were obtained as a supersaturated solid solution by quenching, Fig. 1, curve c,. The increase in resistivity is mainly due to coherent precipitation of y&apos;. In Fig. 2 the effects due to short-range order pN and due to precipitation of particles APT are shown for an aging temperature of 450°C and different aluminum contents. 3) The increase in resistivity depends on the size !f the coherent particles. A critical diameter of 15 5A for the maximum was found for all alloys and aging treatments by extrapolating particle sizes determined by electron microscopy. 4) The maximum of resistivity of the heterogeneous conditions does not occur if particles, larger than the critical size, have formed already during quenching. 5) Plastic deformation destroys short-range order as well as small coherent particles. The discovery of iron-manganese ores on the surface of underwater mountains was made more than a half century ago. During this time the basic ideas about the thermodynamics of the processes of hydrochemical reactions in the sea water have been developed by scientists and are revealed in geochemical and mineralogical differences between the deposits from the seamounts and the nodules of the sea bottom. The distribution of the dissolved metals, oxygen, carbonic acid and organic matter in the overlying ocean waters of seamounts in the deep ocean to depths more than 5,000 m has been studied in some detail (e.g. J.R. Hein, P. Halbach. G.B. Baturin, Ye.M., S.I. Andreev, L.I. Anikeyeva, [1-6]). In recent years scientists from YUZMORGEOLOGY have completed detailed geological survey work on the Magellan Seamounts in the Pacific Ocean. The results of drilling the ore body and geophysical and photo surveys have also been described [4]. Previous ideas about the general covering of seamount surfaces with iron-manganese crusts have been changed based on ground-truth surveys. This study examines the complex concentric-zone or spotty arrangement of the most densely covered sections, the strong dependence of the thickness of crust on the geomorphologic features, and the potential influence of the underlying substratum. One established geochemical heterogeneity in the composition of ores, also frequently inversely proportional power dependence on directions was observed. The development of a numerical model of the formation of the ore crust on the seamounts is currently a high priority.

"The valuation of mineral properties in the U.S. is only partially regulated. The regulations which have jurisdiction or impact appear to have such mainly as a consequence of unintended fallout, since the regulations were designed for other purposes. Court case history can also be important. The combined results are a mixture of bad and good, with important lessons to be learned.Since 1981, the Securities and ExchangeCommission has prohibited U.S. listed companies from reporting quantitative estimates of mineralization and the value of mineralization, other than proven and probable reserves. This results in the minerals appraiser (valuator) working with a shortage of data in his everyday work, both on the subject property and in sales analysis.Between 1989 and 1995, all 50 states and essentially all federal agencies adopted the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) for real property appraisals (valuations). The major national appraisal societies also require their members to abide by USPAP. A significant portion of minerals appraisals must now follow these standards. This paper will discuss the content of USPAP. It provides a very good framework for the valuation of a minerals property or a mine, both as real property and as a business. However, the credentialing standards for real property appraisers are now prohibitive for minerals appraisers."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting a series of rock mechanics investigations at the Lucky Friday Mine in the Coeur d&apos;Alene Mining District of northern Idaho. The present study uses rock deformation measurements to validate and calibrate a geomechanical model of the experimental Lucky Friday underhand longwall (LFUL) stope on the 5,100-ft level of the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. The calibrated three-dimensional, finite-element model and measurements of rock mass displacement show a correlation of 0.795. The calibration reduces rock mass modulus to 14 to 17 pet of laboratory values and rock mass strength (with an energy rule) to 37 to 41 pet of laboratory values. This model suggested that stress-related ground control problems would be encountered west of the stope where the vein makes a right-angle turn and then splits. Rock burst activity was concentrated in this area during mining of the LFUL stope.

The importance of incorporating fundamental principles of rock material response and failure mechanics into a pillar strength design model has been demonstrated. To accurately assess pillar strength, a model should account not only for the characteristics of the coal, but also for those of the surrounding strata. The interactions between the pillar and the surrounding roof and floor dictate ultimate pillar strength. Confinement, or the lack thereof, provided by roof and floor frictional end-constraint is one of the most significant factors in the strength of very wide pillars. The best conditions for end-constraint occur with ideally strong roof and floor. In this paper, it will be shown that weak roof and floor may decrease the ultimate pillar strength by as much as 30% compared to ideal conditions. Field observations confirm this pillar strength reduction in the presence of weak roof and floor. Furthermore, rock partings within the coal have a variable effect on pillar strength, depending on the parting strength. A competent shale parting within the coal reduces the effective pillar height, thus increasing the ultimate pillar strength; a weak claystone parting slightly decreases the strength. Imposed load distribution also has a significant effect on pillar strength, such that asymmetric pillar loading, similar to that observed in pillars adjacent to high extraction mining, reduces the ultimate pillar strength below that of equivalent pillars subject to uniform load distributions.

Surface mining operations typically require run-of-mine material to be sized for further processing. In-pit crushing facilities serve this need, as stationary, semi-mobile or fully mobile units. Although in particular fully mobile crushing facilities have been in use for over half of a century, other surface mining techniques have typically been implemented. However, with increasing operating costs in truck and shovel operations, and other economic considerations, mobile crushing plants are increasingly a viable option. The operational and economical parameters in relation to the optimal surface mining equipment selection will be reviewed. The role of the mobile crushing technology within the continuous vs. noncontinuous surface mining operation and basis for mine planning are also discussed. Current applications and respective case studies will be reviewed. Key performance indicators will be presented. These performance parameters can be viewed as a tool to aid in the equipment selection process. The future direction for further research and development in mobile crushing facilities will also be presented.

Judging from the list of papers to be presented over the next three days, the Symposium promises to provide a most valuable addition to our existing knowledge base in what is now an extremely active area of R&D investigations. Whilst we have obviously come a long way since Sir Henry Bessemer's pioneering experiments of the mid-19th century, there is still much for us to learn.Most importantly, the Symposium offers a further opportunity to acknowledge the many significant technical contributions made in this field by the Organising Committee's special guest, Professor Howard Worner - one of this country's most respected research leaders.When first approached to give this talk I had two areas of concern. Firstly, I was not entirely clear just what injection metallurgy was meant to cover. How should the overall scope of this particular subject be defined?My second concern related to Howard Worner himself - a man for whom I have the highest personal regard and who, in fact, played a most influential role in respect of shaping my own career. Having already spoken about Howard's achievements on earlier occasions, I wondered what I could sensibly add.Notwithstanding these personal reservations, I am delighted to be here with you this morning. If my thoughts on the meaning and scope of injection metallurgy appear to be slightly off-course, and if Howard should perhaps recognise some repetition in my remarks, then I hope I can be forgiven."

"The years following World War II were nation building years in Australia. Soldiers returned from the European and Asian theatres of war sparking a major infrastructure construction boom. Dams and highways were built to keep up with the growth of towns and cities, which were bursting at the seams, not just from the returning soldiers settling down with their families but also from the many waves of refugees from war torn areas around the globe.The demand for electricity generation and distribution required for the growing population sparked the expansion of the national power grid with new high-voltage transmission towers appearing across the landscape. However, with an original design life of 50 years, those transmission lines constructed in the 1950s are nearing, or are at the end of, their anticipated service life.In recent years, the Australian power distribution network has changed from a period of high construction activity in greenfield high-voltage lines to a period that is now focused on reducing cost and maintaining existing assets. Replacing aboveground structural members and electrical components is relatively simple even under live conditions. However, the replacement or repair of tower foundations, many of which are in remote locations, has been a problem that has caused difficulties for power utilities trying to operate on a budget while also avoiding costly and unpopular power outages. With thousands of miles of aging transmission lines needing life extension work, Piling & Civil Australia (PCA) has developed a patented system of upgrading the foundations with micropiles while under live-line conditions without requiring costly outages. The system is seen as revolutionary by power utilities, allowing the utilities to extend the life of their existing assets until demand increases to warrant the construction of a new line. PCA has been working on a potential solution with Powerlink Queensland for the past 5 years to develop a quick and cost-effective foundation replacement system that can extend the life of its existing asset base anywhere from an additional 5 years to 50 years.With design support from Quanta Subsurface, USA, PCA recently completed the foundation replacement of 26 lattice tower foundations in the Townsville region of North Queensland. Using a steel bracket (patent pending) to connect hollow bar micropiles to the lattice towers, the installation techniques that were developed enabled the micropiles to be installed within a tolerance of less than about 3/8 in (10 mm) through the existing steel grillage foundation while maintaining live line conditions. The project was an Australian first and a trial by Powerlink for wider use within its network, and it was delivered on time and within budget at one tenth of the cost of traditional methods."

After the formation of a concentration gradient of SiC within C-C composite, either zircon or mullite thin films were coated on the surface by sol-gel process. Oxidation resistance tests of as-prepared composites with a couple consisting of a ceramic thin film and a SiC-gradient were then carried out in air at the temperature range from 600 to 1600°C. By the coating of zircon with a thickness of 1.5 µm, a pronounced oxidation resistance was observed; the mass loss by oxidation was almost negligible at 1000°C and one hundredth of original composite at 1400°C. In the case of the coating of mullite with a thickness of 1.0 pm, the marked improvement in oxidation resistance over the whole temperature range examined, from 600 to 1600°C, was found with the combination of a SiC-gradient and a mullite thin film

This case study assesses the application of Mine-to-Mill optimisation combined with Whittle Consulting’s Prober&lt;sup&gt;&#174;&lt;/sup&gt; economic optimisation for the purpose of economic value uplift in open cut base and precious metal operations. The study extends the application of these optimisation methods to incorporate the recent practice of Ultra High Intensity Blasting (UHIB) developed by Orica Mining Services. The case study deposit known as “Marvin” is a copper/gold porphyry resource that is commonly used in optimisation software training and industry case studies. It has many similarities to Newcrest’s Cadia Hill open pit mine in NSW. Prior desktop research and industrial trials employed static assessments of Mine-to-Mill effects. No prior work other than a Whittle Consulting client study, has sought to assess the impact of variable fragmentation on enterprise economic value. This study examines the use of variable blasting intensity as a driver of economic value maximisation over the mine’s life.CITATION: Howe, S and Pan, J, 2018. "Galena is the finest component of the product of a closed-circuit grind treating a lead-zinc ore, largely due to preferential recycling of this high-density mineral by the cyclone. For example, at the Pine Point Mines concentrator, for ~ 55% -200 mesh over-all, the galena will be close to 95% -200 mesh. This sliming of the lead can limit recovery, selectivity and dewatering. A proposed circuit modification to reduce the sliming is to incorporate a unit cell. A simulator was constructed to study the No. 3 grinding circuit at Pine Point modified by a unit cell on ball mill discharge (BMD).The simulator used a cumulative size basis rate-of-breakage with plug flow ball mill model, the parameters being obtained by laboratory grinding tests. Flotation and the cyclone models used a cumulative recovery/size matrix. The behaviour of each mineral, galena, sphalerite, pyrite and calcite/dolomite, was simulated. Simulation was adapted to a programmable calculator. A close fit to the existing circuit performance at two tonnages and mineral mixes was established.The simulator showed that the modified circuit could significantly coarsen the Pb grind, from 95% to —50% -200 mesh, depending on recovery, without substantially altering the size of the other minerals. The other principal findings were: compared to laboratory flotation tests on existing circuit BMD, the unit cell concentrate (CONC) will be coarser and markedly lower in grade; relatively low unit cell stage recoveries are desirable, because the cyclone scavenges the tail to give a circuit recovery which is higher than the unit cell stage recovery; unit cell stage recovery should not exceed the cyclone stage recovery, as the latter is the maximum circuit recovery; low unit cell stage recovery helps offset the disadvantage of the high flow at BMD; other high-density minerals will also be scavenged into the CONC, as illustrated by pyrite, making CONC quality difficult to maintain; density control of BMD flotation does not greatly alter feed density to the cyclone or ball mill.Possible plant metallurgy is forecast for a CONC diverted to final lead concentrate."

"A simple analysis of site conditions and capability of the mechanised depillaring (MD) operation found that this approach is suitable to address the strata control issues in coal pillar extraction under the weak and laminated roof strata of Pinoura mine. A continuous miner (CM) with a ram car and quad-bolter are used for single pass pillar extraction (first time in the country) to achieve a relatively faster rate of depillaring. A total of eleven panels are depillared under weak and laminated roof strata with a fair-rated rock mass rating (CMRI-RMR). It is observed that there is less influence of roof caving over the surrounding mining structures, especially those located out-bye the side of the extraction line. An attempt is made to quantify the goaf influence by field studies, which show that the maximum value of mining-induced vertical stress is 2.83 MPa, and the range of influence remains limited to around 15 m from the line of extraction. However, the problem of roof instability under the influenced zone was experienced due to the inherent nature of the weak roof strata. The chances of trapping of CM under weak and laminated roof strata of the panels is reduced by deriving a threshold value of the roof dilation, on the basis of a simple statistical analysis of the obtained field results. However, few incidences of roof collapses are observed over the CM due to the unpredictable behaviour of the geological structures below the freshly exposed strata, which also caused an obstruction in the speed of the extraction. This paper presents results of the field and laboratory studies, conducted for a successful application of the single-pass pillar extraction method, along with details of some CM trapping cases below the weak and laminated roof strata.INTRODUCTIONCoal is the major natural resource to meet the growing energy demand of India and this trend is likely to continue for the next 20 years in the country. A major part of the Indian coal belongs to Gondwana period, and only a small part belongs to Tertiary period. The estimated coal reserve in India per the exploration work done up to a maximum depth of 1200 m is 315.149 billion tonnes, including the proven coal reserve of 143.058 billion tonnes (CMPDIL, 2017). Even in presence of these huge resources of coal in India, there is a considerable gap between production and the users’ demand of coal. Most of the mines are operated by conventional semi-mechanised Bord and Pillar (B&P) methods; thus, the mining industry has gained a considerable amount of operational experience (Singh, Singh, and Dhar, 1996) and knowledge about strata behaviour (Singh and Singh, 1999; Singh et al., 2008) using this method. However, recently, the Indian coal mining industry has introduced some mechanised depillaring (MD) operations, where the level of production is relatively high. This approach of depillaring improves safety along with the production and productivity of a depillaring operation (Ram et al., 2017). The nature of the overlying strata of these depillaring operations vary greatly: from highly laminated, weak, and easily caveable to massive, strong, and difficult to cave."

The purpose of this paper is to outline the equipment used for diamond drilling at Mount Isa, together with alterations and recent improvements therein. As the majority of the drilling is carried out with machines running at relatively high speeds using XRN blast hole bits, the paper is mainly devoted to this branch of drilling.Because diamond bit costs constitute the major expense, a considerable amount of research into bit design has been carried out, and in several instances, costs per foot have shown an appreciable decrease in spite of rising manufacturing costs and higher diamond prices. Equipment performance has at times been erratic due to delays in delivery and occasionally because of faulty parts, but in general the position has improved by keeping in close contact with the manufacturers.BLASTHOLE DRILLING MACHINESThe standard blasthole diamond drill is the &apos;E-500&apos; two cylinder air powered model manufactured by Mineral Drillers Limited. Several of the older pattern JV41 are still in use, but are being retired as they wear out.. Machines are repaired in the underground diamond drill shop.The normal feed gears used when drilling in lead shales are 350 top gear and 450 low gear-actually 357 and 438 revolutions per inch of advance respectively. The 300 gear was commonly used several years ago, but it was found that bit footages could be increased without any appreciable drop in penetration rate by reducing to the 350 gear. Little faith can be placed in a coal resource estimate without a clear understanding of the estimate&apos;s accuracy. Different types of coal resource estimates require different levels of accuracy. Prospecting surveys typically are done with widely spaced boreholes, while a much higher level of accuracy is required for mine design. Either way, a measure of the accuracy clearly indicates the level of confidence that can be placed in the results of the estimate. Geographic information systems (GIs) are becoming a commonly used tool for resource estimation because they not only provide a database management platform but also the graphical capabilities to visualize resource characteristics. interpolation methods used commonly in these resource studies do not typically provide a quantitative answer to the question: "How accurate is the estimate?" By comparing localized measurements at multiple locations to the interpolated thickness distribution used in a resource estimate, a quantitative analysis of accuracy can be obtained. The technique is demonstrated with a case study from Central Appalachia.

Introduction ? Today?s economic market is motivating underground mining companies to increase development advance rates and enhance their NPVs. ? For example, block cave mining involves development of kilometers of drifts with multiple pillars. ? The cyclic nature of drill and blast, and its inherent tendency to damage the surrounding excavation rock mass and increase support demand often result in poor advance rates ? This has motivated mining companies to replace the conventional drill-and-blast as the main excavation method with alternative methods such as mechanized excavation. ? There is little experience with mechanized or non-explosive excavation methods in hard rock metalliferous underground mining.
