The REL of 1 mg/m3 for respirable coal mine dust does not assure a zero risk for the development of occupational respiratory diseases among all miners exposed during a full working lifetime. Consequently, a medical screening and surveillance program that includes initial and periodic chest X-rays and spirometric examinations is important for the early detection of disease and the prevention of "material impairment of health or functional capacity" [30 USC 8 11(a)(6)(A)]. The medical screening and surveillance program is also useful for disease surveillance, which includes the tracking trends, the setting of prevention and intervention priorities, and the assessment of prevention and intervention efforts. NIOSH encourages both underground and surface coal miners to participate in the medical screening and surveillance program.

In these troubled times free enterprise is maintaining vital molybdenum output, while expanding plant, and bringing in new low grade ore reserves, at Climax, the world's largest known molybdenum deposit. Climax Molybdenum Co. is putting $25 million into additional surface plant facilities and other millions into underground development. The expansion program to be operating by 1954 includes a new mining level, crushing plant, 4000-ft conveyor, milling units, by-products plant, and housing for 198 families. Completion of this program and low grade plant will add 10,000 tons per day to present capacity and several million tons to ore reserves.

A three-stage fluidizing-bed process consisting of chlorination, selective oxidation and sulfur chloride conversion was tested for processing chalcopyrite concentrate. It was found that the use of excess oxygen was essential for the stable operation of the oxidation reactor. The excess-oxygen gas inevitably causes the oxidation of the sulfide concentrate in the chlorination and sulfur chloride conversion reactors. A new flowsheet is proposed to separate the chlorination and selective oxidation steps with separate flow paths of the fluidizing gases, thereby, preventing the passage of excess-oxygen gas in the chlorination and sulfur chloride conversion reactors. The feasibility of the proposed flowsheet was demonstrated in a laboratoryscale fiuidizing bed setup.

Evaluation of different techniques for bottom fill stabilisation showed that frozen fill was the most economical method. In order to test the method a full-scale field test was performed in the Rehnstr÷m mine. The test was instrumented with temperature gauges and extensometers. Before the field test, frozen fill was tested at the laboratory. The mechanical properties of the frozen fill were determined by uniaxial compression and creep tests. A deformation model for the frozen fill was set up. Calculation procedure for design of spacing between the freezing tubes, time for freezing and calculation of the necessary capacity of the refrigeration plant was developed. These procedures were calibrated against the field test. The results of these investigations allow the following conclusions: From a mechanical point of view, frozen fill has excellent properties as a structural member and it also has excellent properties to support itself and the fill above. Methods for the thermal and mechanical design of freeze stabilisation have been developed and found adequate. The need to place the freezing tubes several years in advance of the future sill pillar mining, requires careful long-term planning and accurate documentation.

Historically, this area produced gold and silver from many well-known vein deposits, like Tayoltita, Topia, and San Jose de Gracia. Modern exploration identified three categories of deposits: 1) low grade porphyry golds in shallow level dacite porphyries; 2) batholith-related deposits; and 3) those formed in volcanic sequences of Late Cretaceous to Late Tertiary. At least four porphyry golds have been identified, of which Metates is best known. These are formed by and within daciteporphyries, associated hydrothermal breccias and sometimes within surrounding meta sediments. Their ages are from mid-Cretaceous to Early Tertiary. Precious metal deposits associated with batholiths occur as veins, contact haloes in meta sediments or volcanics, skarns, tectonic breccias, hydrothermal tourmaline breccias, dacite dikes or as disseminated or stockwork deposits such as La Fortuna.Several new gold discoveries were made in older EarlyTertiary Volcanic Sequences and in the younger Tertiary volcanics within prominent structures exceeding 3 to 5 km in lengths. Some of these are open-pittable but most have to be mined by underground methods.

Over the last few years, the never-ending search for mineral wealth has taken the exploration efforts of Canadian mining companies further and further into the High Arctic and isolated locations where regularly scheduled transportation and communication facilities are nonexistent. Names such as Black Angel, Nanisivik, Asbestos Hill, New Quebec Raglan, Rabbit Lake, and Arvik are today frequently mentioned in mining publications. Twenty years ago, mining in these locations was unheard of, mainly due to logistic problems. However, improvements in the design and use of helicopters, STOL aircraft, and icebreakers in northern areas have helped to overcome these problems, making these locations more attractive to mining companies. Since 1969, when Redpath completed its first Arctic project at Texas Gulf's Scrathcona Sound property on the northern tip of Baffin Island, Redpath has been actively involved in contracting and engineering projects in three general areas: the High Arctic, Ungava and Greenland. A map showing some of these projects is shown in Figure 1. In these areas, permafrost conditions exist from a depth of 274 metres in Ungava to a depth of approximately 610 metres in the Little Cornwallis Island area, with rock temperatures ranging from -5°C to -13°C. Outside temperatures range from a low of -50°C in the winter to a high of 21°C in the summer. High winds in the winter result in wind chill factors lower than -73°C

Using applications can Re-block, Krige, Compute variable, Compute Route, etc. necessary block models with multiple dimensions can be created. For instance, disseminated deposits require granular ore control block model because mineralization can be unpredictable. Then different block size must be created for the ore control activity and different block size must be shaped individually in LTP, STP, and OC.

The Bureau of Mines is examining mineral deposits bearing strategic elements such as cobalt, for which the United States heavily relies on imports. The Turner-Albright volcanogenic sulfide deposit in southwestern Oregon is marginally economic based on its gold content and associated silver, copper, zinc, and cobalt values. Bureau research on the Turner-Albright deposit was performed (1) to evaluate domestic cobalt recovery as a byproduct of gold production from massive sulfide ores; (2) to develop an analogue of modern sea-floor polymetallic deposits to determine the economic potential of the deep-sea resources; and (3) to compile information on the geochemistry and genesis of the deposit that can aid in future onshore exploration. Cold was introduced as near micrometer-sized disseminations by exhalative hydrothermal fluids near sea-floor vent sites and by late influxes of mineralizing fluids into lower zones of brecciated sulfides and basaltic fragments. Cobalt is a substitutional element in pyrite that occurs in outlying halos around original vent sites. Mineralogic studies conducted with a scanning-electron microscope and an electron microprobe determined that none of the ore minerals are amenable to traditional beneficiation methods such as gravity and flotation. An experimental oxygen pressure-leaching procedure developed by the Bureau has proven successful in treating such complex ores.

The scanning electron microscope (SEM), became commercially available in 1966. Embodying some unique features not provided by conventional electron microscopes, this new electron-optical instrument offers the scientific community a new way of observing the surfaces of materials. In rock mechanics research, the SEM should prove a useful basic tool in characterizing rock fracture on a very small scale and thus contribute to a better understanding of rock behavior at larger scales. This article presents one example of how the SEM is being applied to such research at the Twin Cities Mining Research Center operated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in Minneapolis. This research center conducts theoretical and experimental studies on a broad range of mechanisms that induce disintegration by the application of energy to rock.1 Some of these studies are concerned with the relation of microstructure to rock behavior and are carried out mainly with the petrographic microscope. At the same time, however, the center recognizes that this relation must be studied through several orders of magnitude, from lattice-size units of rock-forming minerals to field-size rock units. The SEM fits this scheme by extending the capability of the petrographic microscope into smaller orders of magnitude. However, because its resolution is limited to about 200 A at 10,000x, the SEM is not capable of resolving lattice-size units, and hence a conventional electron microscope with a much greater resolution capability is necessary at this order of magnitude.

Introduction A prime goal in the design and operation of uranium milling waste or tailing disposal systems is to mitigate adverse effects of tailing liquid on the adjacent groundwater. Adverse effects are often defined as modifying the groundwater quality in such a manner as to have detrimental health effects on downstream users. To accomplish this goal, the following three types of systems are employed with regard to the seepage and groundwater aspects of waste disposal: Type I Systems Seepage is allowed to occur unabated from the tailing disposal facility. Detrimental radionuclides and chemical elements are prevented from causing adverse downstream effects by natural purification actions in the subgrade geologic materials and the near zone groundwater. Monitoring is required to assure the predicted natural purification is occurring. The consequences of seepage loss is minimal since the m be predicted with current investigation and analytical techniques and can be evaluated as to effectiveness during operations. Type II Systems Seepage is partially retained in a waste impoundment or leakage from a designed retention system is anticipated. Natural purification is relied on for controlling migration of detrimental radionuclides or chemical elements, or contingency planning is employed to collect and return the tailing liquid to the impoundment. Installation efforts and concern for escape of tailing liquid are greater than for Type I systems, but extra precautions to preclude all seepage are not implemented. Monitoring is required to detect leakage and/or assure the natural purification of escaping tailing fluid. The consequence for accidential excusions are moderate, and will be excessive only if massive system failure occurs. The tungsten carbide insert bit has probably advanced blasthole drilling more than any other single improvement. Tungsten carbide inserts have longer life, maintain sharper edges, and penetrate faster than hardened steel edge bits. Before the tungsten carbide hit appeared, all-steel bits were used. Even with the new bits, blasthole drilling costs vary with the type of equipment used and its condition; the hole's length and diameter; the rock's texture, hardness, and nature; the operator efficiency. To help reduce drilling costs, the operator should be familiar with the use and care of drill bits. This article provides information about tungsten carbide rock bits used for percussion drilling. Consideration of tungsten carbide rock bits includes looking at bit materials [ ] as well as bit operation and maintenance. Two basic tungsten carbide rock hits are the button bit and the four-wing carbide insert bit. Three common hit-to-drill-steel connections are the bottom drive, tapered drive, and shoulder drive. Bottom drive bits arc typically used for singlepass or longhole drilling, with all percussion drills from handheld sinkers to heavy track drills. Tapered socket bits are available with shallow or deep carhide inserts, for the lowest cost depending on the rock type being drilled. Shoulder drive bits are available in all-steel or carbide insert design.

Since mid-1989, Cambior has increased its producing gold mines from four to six, having acquired the Chima Mine and brought the Silidor Mine onstream. In June 1990, the company announced that the Mouska project would also be put into production. Gold production reached almost 190 000 ounces in 1989 and is expected to exceed 220 000 ounces this year. Cambior has also a non-gold operation with an interest of 50% in the Niobec Mine and has recently signed an option agreement in the development of the Lac Knife graphite deposit in northeastern Quebec. During the past year, the company has extended its exploration activities to the United States and Indonesia, and now has interests in nearly 80 properties. Last May, Cambior signed an option agreement with Golden Star for a gold deposit in Guyana, the OMAI Project, containing at least 2 000 000 ounces of gold in situ.

During the last 15 years, the bucket wheel has become increasingly popular as a mining tool. Being a large-capacity continuous mining excavator, the machine offers low actual operating costs and low unit costs. Of German origin, the bucket wheel has now appeared on the American mining scene as well as in such other places as Australia, Northern Rhodesia, South Africa, Congo, Indonesia, and India. Patented in 1913, the first practical application waited until 1920 when a bucket wheel excavator was placed in operation at an open pit lignite mine in central Germany. This initial experiment met with little success due to difficulties in solving the technical problems of the machine's construction rather than to the design of the wheel itself.

Molybdenum of high purity can be produced by direct dissociatiott of commercial molyhdenm disulfide in vacuo at 1600° to 1700°C (2910° to 3090°F). The Product is lower in oxygen than commercially available molybdenzdm powder. Analyses of ingots arc-cast from commercial molybdenum powder, hydrogen-re-cluced from animonium molybdate, and from thermally dissociated molybdenum disulfide indicate that the levels of chemical impurities in these ingots are similar. Equipment now in operation will produce 100-lb hatches of powder product. The paper describes development of processing equipment, control of processing varzahles, handling of the product, and evaluatiotl of the melal produced. MOLYBDENITE (molybdenum disulfide) can be decomposed by heat in the absence of oxygen to produce elemental molybdenum and sulfur, which is evolved as a gas. The temperatures required for the dissociation are above 1370°C (2500°F); the sulfur must be continuously withdrawn to permit the reaction to proceed to completion. This is accomplished by continuous evacuation of the thermal dissociation chamber and condensation of the gaseous sulfur in another part of the system. Cognizance of the fact that the dissociation takes place in two steps is important in controlling the process. Basically, the molybdenite dissociation process has two potential advantages as a method of produc- ing pure molybdenum: 1) The materials entering into the process contain little or no oxygen. Since the process is carried out in vacuum at high temperature, the quantities of interstitial oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen in the product should be very low. 2) The process is more direct than the commercia1 method of producing high-purity molybdenum. In the conventional process, molybdenite is roasted to molybdic oxide, the oxide is purified first by sublimation, then by conversion to ammonium molybdate, and finally, the molybdate is reduced in a hydrogen atmosphere (usually in two steps) to the metal lic molybdenum powder. This paper presents a description of the stages in scaling-up of the dissociation equipment and an account of attempts to evaluate the molybdenum produced by thermal dissociation, rather than a report of a fundamental study of the dissociation reaction. Since little has been written on the subject, it is appropriate, before detailing the development of the process, to review briefly the research that has been conducted over quite a period of years. The purpose of this article is to present design information and operating data on a pilot gas scrubber which is believed to be a new approach for removing noxious gases and particulate matter from the off gases of coal burning power plants and smelters. This principle of scrubbing gases, particularly, scrubbing with an aqueous slurry of lime, was conceived by the author early in 1972. The National Lime Association financed the design, fabrication and initial operation of the unit. The unit was fabricated by Hazen Research Inc. of Golden, Colorado. It has been tested on the off gases of two coal burning power plants and one smelter. The current environmental program has stimulated research and development activity directed toward the removal of sulfur oxides, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter and other undesirable substances from gases discharged into the atmosphere. At present, most of this effort is focused on the removal of sulfur dioxide and particulate matter by aqueous scrubbing of the gases. This presentation deals particularly with the removal of sulfur dioxide using an aqueous slurry of lime as the scrubbing medium. In recent papers, the author has called attention to-the sludge problems resulting from aqueous scrubbing and to some earlier data on the pilot scrubber about to be discussed.1/

"A review of the current status of gasification technology shows that many engineering systems are immediately available for use in the gasification of coal. Widespread international experience can be brought to bear on the atmospheric pressure gasification of all Canadian coals.Unless a high ash content dictates the use of a fluid-bed gasifier, it appears that bituminous coals can be used in gravitating (fixed] bed systems and that the strongly caking coals are most suited to the high-pressure entrained-bed systems . Existing and developing technologies in fluid-bed gasification are attractive for reactive lignites and subbituminous coals.The Fischer-Tropsch based process is the only commercial embodiment of coal liquefaction; the use of Canadian coals in this process depends only on their gasification characteristics. Current developments in hydroliquefaction are directed toward carboniferous coals of medium or high rank. It is not clear that cretaceous coals of the same rank will give similar process yields and economics.IntroductionThe twin coal conversion processes of gasification and liquefaction have a history which dates back beyond the current energy shortages of the western world. Indeed, liquids and gas from coal were produced before this century.Coal gas produced from a coal carbonization process was originated before 1800, and the development of gasification of non-coking coals was patented by Siemens in 1860.This patent represented the first use of air and steam together in the gasmaking process. Probably it won't happen to us again in a thousand years, but it was very embarassing at the time. It is only because of certain matters that have come up this month that we tell you at all about it. At the beginning of our trip to Peru and Chile last summer, we were flying with Bill Haddon from Lima to Tacna aboard Fawcett. Being an old hand at foreign travel, particularly in South America, we felt obliged to explain some of the special features of travel in Latin America and the niceties of etiquette in particular and were so engaged when the plane landed at the airport. We led the way briskly into the terminal, expecting at any moment to have a representative of Southern Peru Copper pop up and present himself. However, this didn't happen so we repaired to the baggage arrival station to wait. All the bags were quickly picked up, but ours were no where to be seen. Bill was slightly agitated because the plane was being buttoned up for take off. However, rising to the emergency with our usual aplomb, we took charge of the situation. Brandishing the claim checks under the nose of the porter who pointed to them and said, "si, Tacna," we nodded briskly and in our serviceable Spanish said "si se[n]or, vayase viejo, rapido." He was off and back with our suitcases quickly enough.

About 75% of the market economy countries's supply of cobalt is produced in Central Africa by Zafre and Zambia. Zafre alone accounts for more than 55% and has the resources and capacity to increase output significantly at any time so its dominant position is unlikely to be challenged in the foreseeable future. Other producers from domestic resources are Canada, Australia and South Africa; and Cuba, probably the most important producer outside of the Market Economy countries. Belgium, Norway, France, Japan and Finland produce cobalt from imported materials. While there are "cobalt ores", inMorocco, USA, Canada and the USSR, the mineralisation is complex and cobalt extraction is costly. In ZaPre and Zambia cobalt is a by-product of copper; in Canada, Australia, France, and Cuba it is a by-product of nickel; and in South Africa it is a by-product from the production of Platinum Group Metals. Thus the levels of cobalt production are inevitably related to the production of other primary metals. While some cobalt is produced by predominantly pyrometallurgical methods most of the world's cobalt is produced hydrometallurgically. The existence of large hydro-electric power plants and the mineralogy of the copper and cobalt concentrates encouraged research and development in Zafre of the recovery of copper and cobalt by electrowinning from sulfate solutions; much pioneering work was carried out, which lead to construction of the two largest copperlcobalt hydrometallurgical plants in the world, at Shituru and Luilu. Similar systems were adopted in Zambia. In Canada high pressure hydrometallurgical processes based on the sulfate system were developed and adopted in Australia, the Philippines, Finland and South Africa. Meanwhile developments in chloride hydrometallurgical extraction of nickel and cobalt lead to its use in the extraction of cobalt in Norway, France and Japan.
