The Red Dog Mine is the world’s largest zinc mine. It is located 145 km (90 miles) north of the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska on lands owned by the Inupiat Eskimo organization called the Northwest Alaskan Native Association (NANA) Development Corp. NANA acquired surface and subsurface title to this resource as part of its settlement lands under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. In 1982, NANA entered into a lease agreement with Cominco. Cominco is an international mining company focused on zinc. It built and operates the Red Dog Mine. NANA’s principle objective in the development of the mine was to have it contribute to the development of sustainable communities within their traditional region. This meant creating job opportunities in a modern economy while preserving the traditional subsistence lifestyles. Preservation of their culture, language and traditions are as important to the NANA people today as they were in the past.

Introduction The US Bureau of Mines' (USBM) world reserve/consumption ratios (Table 1) indicate that, if the world is relatively peaceful in the next two decades, there should be ample world supplies of minerals to permit rising standards of living for increasing world population. But it must be remembered that most mineral reserve estimates are conservative and that normal mining practice is to develop a ton of ore reserve for every ton mined. It should be noted that "reserve," as used in this paper follows the definition given in US Geological Survey (USGS) Circular 831, 1980; "that part of the reserve base which could be economically extracted or produced at the time of the determination." In addition to accurately determining the geologic parameters of mineral deposits, a judgment as to whether that deposit is a "reserve" per se involves consideration of many other factors. These factors were recognized nearly a century ago by a well-known mining engineer and later President, Herbert Hoover. In "Principles of Mining," 1909, Hoover wrote: "Unfortunately for the mining engineer, not only has he to weigh the amount of risk inherent in calculations involved in the mine itself, but also that due to fluctuations in the value of metals. If the ore is shipped to custom works, he has to contemplate also variations in freights and smelting charges ...In a free market, the law of supply and demand governs the values of metals as it does that of all other commodities. So far, except for tariff walls and smelting rings, there is a free market in the metals under discussion. The demand for metals varies with the unequal fluctuations of the industrial tides. The sea of commercial activity is subject to heavy storms, and the mine valuer is compelled to serve as weather prophet on this ocean of trouble. High prices, which are the result of industrial booms, bring about overproduction, and the collapse of these begets a shrinkage of demand, wherein consequently the tide of price turns back." Current supplies and use There have been ample supplies of most mineral materials to permit several-fold increases of world production of common major mineral based minerals (steel, aluminum, copper, and cement) over the past three decades. Motor vehicle production is a major consumer of mineral materials. However, in the last decade, down-sizing to facilitate improved fuel efficiency and reduce harmful emissions has reduced the weight of the average US-made automobile 15%, to 1.5 t (3200 lbs). Also in the US, there are 92 million dwelling units, or on average, fewer than three persons per dwelling unit. Construction is another major consumer of materials in the industrialized developed countries. It will also be a major consumer of materials worldwide as less developed nations seek to improve their infrastructures by adding roads, bridges, railroads, airfields, ports, and housing. Fortunately, a large number of traditional common materials, many of mineral origin and also many of agricultural origin, are readily available for construction. Contaminated sediments are a multinational problem. A crucial factor in solving an environmental problem is knowledge of, not only the amounts of polluted soil, the contaminants involved and their concentration, but also the historical background of the problem. Processing polluted soil is a tailor made activity based on rational decisions resulting from a detailed treatability study. Lack of information about characteristic properties of a specific sludge/pollution combination is the main obstacle in the route from first ascertaining that a particular harbour subsoil is polluted, to final identification of the full scale treatment plant. In the first instance, information must be generated regarding the distribution of pollutants in relation to the distribution of the original geophysical components. Based on this information rational decisions can be made on separation at a particular cutpoint and what sequential techniques should be involved for a certain fraction. For this purpose a `fingerprint method' is presented especially developed for investigation of polluted soil and sediments. The heart of the fingerprint method is a series of sequential hydrocyclone separations, by which a series of products is generated. The objective of the fingerprint method is to select an optimised treatment procedure in which the pollutants are concentrated in as small a volume of material as possible, leaving the bulk of the material clean. The pollutants can then readily be destroyed or isolated from the environment. The philosophy and advantages of the fingerprint method are demonstrated for a harbour sludge containing heavy metals as main pollutants. Hydrocyclone separation combined with flotation of both the coarse and fine fraction resulted in reusable and dischargeable products. Flotation of the fraction of fines was carried out by means of an experimental flotation cyclone enabling the selective recovery of mineral particles with diameters less than 10 microns. The overall conclusion is that design and engineering of treatment flow schemes for polluted dredged materials is a tailor made activity based on rational decisions resulting from the fingerprint information.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated equipment and procedures for drop-weight testing of explosive liquids as prescribed by Test 4) a widely used method. It was demonstrated that partial ignitions, originally designated as negative results, should be designated positives; it was also shown that wear or erosion of the sample cups and the type of mount used for the apparatus had important effects on the results. Relative sensitivity as measured by Test 4 was found to vary slightly with temperature. The Bureau also designed a fixed 2-kg weight and associated electromagnetic release, which subsequently were incorporated as standard in a revision of Test 4. The original concept that the test involves only adiabatic compression was found to be an oversimplification; an alternate mechanism for the initiation process is proposed in which due consideration is given to the effects of cavitation and microjets.

Emulsion explosives are gaining a wider and wider commercial market and are displacing other composite slurry technologies. However, the grease-like state and essential thermodynamic instability of emulsion explosives cause inconvenience in production, transportation, storage and use and lead to gradual changes in performance. Emulsion powder explosives are designed to avoid these disadvantages. The formulation, process and properties of emulsion powder explosives made through a spin flash technology are described in this paper.

If silicon is in contact with silicon oxide, a heterojunction is formed which induces an inversion layer ("channel"). Influences of impurities and structural parameters on the channel are discussed. There seems to be no relation between surface damage in silicon and the channel. Phosphorz~s doping of the silicon oxide has no pronounced effect on the channel. Channels which were well above the range predicted by the heterojunction model were related to the action of H* at the silicon/silicon oxide interface. Channels which were well below tlze range predicted by the heterojunc-tion model were related to a transition region in the oxide adjacent to the interface. In support of the assumed transition region and the H+ are the ex-periments described on the paper. Furthermore, the concept of metastable OH groups in silzca, known from other publications, has been used to explain certain channel characteristics by the formation and the accommodation of hydrogen in the silicon oxide. THE electrical characteristics of a semiconductor device in many cases are influenced by the conditions of its surface. Because these conditions often are changing with temperature, time, ambient, or other parameters, numerous attempts have been undertaken to stabilize them by suitable processes. Several years ago Atallal studied the silicon/silicon dioxide interface and since then increasing attention has been given to the silicon dioxide as a means to stabilize silicon surfaces. This led to the evolution of the planar silicon devices where oxide layers are used to protect places at which the junctions are intersecting the surface. The formation of the oxide layers on silicon can be carried out by a variety of processes: high-temperature thermal oxidation (exposing the silicon surface to oxidizing agents such as 02, HzO, COz), evaporation of SiOz, or anodic oxidation of silicon. Originally the oxides were considered able to "passivate" the silicon surface and it was understood that they 1) protected the surface against any influence from the ambient and 2) stabilized surface conditions which were necessary for proper device performance. It soon was realized that the second quality was not always obtainable: Atalla and Tannenbaum showed that, in the process of forming a layer on doped silicon by thermal oxida- tion, electrically active impurities in the silicon near the interface are redistributed, thus giving rise eventually to the formation of unwanted charge distributions. The degradation of planar junctions during reoxidation of silicon was observed by Barson et a. Surface studies with silicon planar junction structures indicated that the breakdown voltage depended on the kind of procedure which was applied during or after oxidation.*" Yamin and worthinge report on charge storage and dielectric properties of SiOz films at elevated temperatures. Another influential parameter on the silicon surface is discussed by Lindmayer and usen,' namely the appearance of a surface potential on silicon as a consequence of the heterojunction formed by the silicon/silicon oxide interface. In the present paper the influence of impurities and structural parameters in silicon oxide in connection with the heterojunction is a particular object of our investigations. I) EXPERIMENTAL The material used was 10 ohm-cm p-type silicon slices with either damaged surfaces (mechanically lapped or polished) or damage-free surfaces (chemically polished). The majority of the slices were oxidized for 1 hr and 20 min at 1250°C in a steam + oxygen atmosphere generated by passing O2 through HzO at 90°C (wet oxygen). This led to oxide layers of about 9000 A. On some slices oxide layers were grown in pure oxygen (dry oxygen). By a photoresist process a set of 20 by 200 mil windows was then etched out from the oxide layer. The pattern of the windows is shown in Fig. 1. In a subsequent process n-type pockets with surface concentrations between 2 x 10" and 5 x 10" cm"3 were formed by phosphorus diffusion. WELL known to every metallurgist is the fact that different production schedules will profoundly affect the character of annealed metal strip. Yet the number of conditions [ ] that may be wrought by different combinations of rolling and annealing schedules is so myriad that despite the continual research that is being applied to this subject, the complete picture is not yet known. P. L. Jones (Sink and Float Corp., New York)—The comparisons between galena and ferrosilicon medium should be applied only to the specific sink-float process used at Mascot since no evidence is presented that allows the comparison to be extended generally to galena medium as now used in other forms of sink-float. It is stated that flotation recovery of galena medium was tried but was unsuccessful and therefore the elaborate gravity system of medium recovery was applied. The expense of the gravity system at Mascot was one of the reasons for changing to ferrosilicon. However two important sink-float plants treating a combined total of over 13,000 tons of ore per day are using flotation to clean galena medium most successfully and are obtaining medium recoveries comparable with those reported in the paper for ferrosilicon. Slightly increased zinc recovery is claimed due to the change-over but it is to be noted that at the time of the change a decreased density differential was obtained in the separator. "The Victor Diamond Mine is located in the James Bay lowlands, 90 km west of the First Nations village of Attawapiskat. The project was the first of its kind in northern Ontario and was completed approximately 9 months ahead of schedule.The Victor Mine process plant flowsheet was designed to produce a 95 - 98% by weight diamond concentrate. Main processing steps include 3 stages of comminution, dense medium separation and proprietary x-ray technology for final recovery. Reagent consumption for this process is limited to flocculant, for thickening of fine processed kimberlite, and FeSi for the dense medium separation.The commissioning phase of the Victor Project was executed over a period of 6 months and commenced prior to substantial completion of construction. The approach used was to focus on and complete commissioning of the higher risk dense medium separation and recovery systems prior to construction completion of up stream systems.INTRODUCTIONThe development of the Victor Diamond Mine took place over a period of approximately 5 years and had a capital cost of CAD997 million. It was a greenfields project in an undeveloped region of northern Ontario, only accessible by winter road. Figure 1, below, displays the location of the project within Ontario.The main stages of the project included feasibility, environmental permitting, engineering, construction, and commissioning. At the onset of the engineering phase, the mine was scheduled to enter production in October 2008. Through a team effort between AMEC and DeBeers Canada, the schedule was advanced by 6 months towards the goal of project completion in April 2008. Production status was attained in January 2008, approximately 9 months ahead of the original schedule. This paper focuses on the commissioning aspects of the project and includes a less detailed discussion of the engineering stage."

Apropos of metals low in the series illustrated by Dr. Butler's Table 11, it is interesting to note that Cress and Feldman29 reported traces of platinum metals in several samples of alunite. They found, chemically and spectrographically, several traces of platinum, palladium, and rhodium in alunite from Sugar Loaf Peak, near Quartzite, Ariz.; silver, platinum, and rhodium in alunite from Rio Grande County, Colorado; and traces of rubidium and gallium in various samples of alunite. These authors stated that the platinum metals appear to be present as Oxides and suggested deposition by hydrothermal solutions under near-surface conditions. AS described by Heineman,30 the wall rock of the Sugar Loaf alunite veins shows considerable alunitic alteration. Pyrite and hematite are relatively abundant in the wall rock but decrease progressively near the veins. Assays of samples of the Sugar Loaf alunite, run by J. B. Cunningham of the University of Arizona College of Mines, showed traces of silver and 0.002 to 0.004 oz of gold per ton, but the chemical form of the gold and silver in this occurrence remains undetermined.

The Mufulira Copper Mine, Ltd., is in Northern Rhodesia, ten miles from the Belgian Congo border, and is one of the group of four operating mines comprising the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt. The ore deposits at Mufulira are on the limb of a large syncline striking NW.-SE. and dipping NE. at about 45 deg towards the Congo border. The host rocks are well-consolidated, highly-silicified, felspathic quarzites of the lower part of the pre-Cambrian Séries des Mines of the Katanga. The ore rocks are underlain, unconformably, by the older "Muva Series," in this case hard, green, metamorphosed quarzites. There are three superimposed orebodies, the first, or upper, orebody averaging 40-ft true thickness with a strike length of about 5000 ft, the second, or middle, orebody of about 50-ft true thickness with a strike length of about 6000 ft, and the third or lower orebody of around 60-ft true thickness with a strike length of 8000 ft. The orebodies are separated by varying widths of waste, or very low-grade ore, from a few feet up to 50 ft. The middle and lower orebodies are so close together for a strike length of 3000 ft that they are mined as one orebody. In all, the mineralized zone is about 200 ft in true thickness.

THE plastering properties of six representative California drilling muds were studied over a temperature range of 70° to 175° F. at several mud weights, using a high-pressure circulating filter press with full size consolidated cores. In all tests, with untreated as well as with chemically treated muds, the filtration rates at elevated temperature were higher than at low temperatures and in nearly every case this increased filtration rate was notably larger than could be attributed alone to the decreased viscosity of water-the flowing medium-at elevated temperatures. It is concluded that no existing method will permit even an approxi-mate determination of the filtration rate at high temperature from data at room temperature. It is necessary to measure filtration at the tem-perature actually anticipated in the well, or to make a sufficient number of tests at various lower temperatures so that a small extrapolation of these data to the anticipated well temperature may be applied. Such tests should be carried out on the mud as actually used in the well. The viscosity of each of the muds was determined over the same temperature range. While no relationship was observed between mud viscosity and plastering properties, it was found that chemical treatment of the muds for viscosity reduction shifted the temperature of minimum viscosity to appreciably higher values than for untreated muds.

Rapid changes in technology and human resources trends require the mining industry to plan carefully for new work camps. The abandonment of the “mining town” concept and rapid increases in the adoption of long distance commuting have intensified the need for improved planning and monitoring of existing and upcoming operations. New mines will have an increasing Aboriginal participation in their workforce and will mostly to be located in remote and in extreme weather conditions. In this sense, the intensification of the use of the commuting system has increased the need for improved planning and monitoring of upcoming operations. Given that mining development is experiencing a surge in activity in Canada, particularly in remote and northern locations significant number of individuals will get jobs that involve mine camp communities. Some employees will spend half of their working lives at the mine site for a period of time that can last up to 30 years. Even though investments have been made towards particularly high quality physical environments, mine camp policies, programs and employee quality of life in mine camps have not been studied in any depth.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated recovery of manganese from basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking slags because the slags represent a large potential resource of a metal for which there is no domestic production. BOF slags were leached using fluosilicic acid, a byproduct of the fertilizer industry. Manganese and iron were extracted as soluble manganous and ferrous fluosilicates while the calcium and magnesium remained in the tailings as insoluble fluorides. Treating the pregnant liquor with sodium chloride, precipitated sodium fluosilicate (Na2Sif6) which was recovered as a byproduct. Manganese and iron were precipitated as hydroxide-carbonate salts with the addition of sodium carbonate to the treated liquor. Recoveries for manganese and iron were 73 to 83 and 67 to 70 pet, respectively.

This paper summarizes the results obtained from the preliminary cementing of wells in an effort to cut off the bottom water. The object of this work was two-fold: (1) To prevent the oil sand from becoming flooded. (2) To plug off bottom water, thereby preserving the individual well and reclaiming production. Valuable suggestions and help have been given by the following named: Messrs. Kyle and La Velle, of the U. 8. Bureau of Mines; Magnolia Petroleum -Co.; Freed Oil and Gas Co. The cementing work was carried out under the personal supervision of L. J. Snyder. In an unpublished paper on the "Water Problem in the Augusta Field," 5. K. Clark reaches the following conclusions: (1) That the great amount of water present is bottom water, occurring in the Varner sand, the main producing or the 2500-ft. horizon, (2) That the only striking connection between structure and water is in .the area of the marked fault on the Ralston, E. C. Varner, and F. Varner leases in sections 8, 9, 16 and 17. (3) That the oil occurs in porous streaks, generally separated by finegrained, well cemented sand, which is barren. Possibly two or three such pay streaks may be found. That under a pay, fine-grained sand occurs, which is presumably barren at the time of drilling, but soon reveals water. The writer takes partial exception to the last point, because well defined shale, slate, lime, or hard sand breaks have been encountered in a great many cases, separating the pay streaks under which water is often found. This is not an invariable occurrence, as cases have been noted when the oil has been followed immediately by water in the same stratum. In an effort to overcome the water menace, the following methods of plugging were tried: (1) Plugging with wood, lead, and limit plugs. (2) Plugging with sand pumpings.

"L’étude présentée ici vise à étudier l’influence, lors de stimulation hydraulique de puits dans les réservoirs géothermiques de type Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS), du comportement mécanique des zones de failles recoupant le puits sur la réponse hydraulique du réseau de fractures 3D. Dans ce but, un modèle 3D, basé sur la méthode des éléments distincts et dans lequel les zones de failles recoupant le puits sont modélisées par des fractures numériques 2D, est mis en oeuvre. Les modélisations présentées ici visent à caractériser l’influence du comportement mécanique (type de comportement, hétérogénéité) sur la cinétique de la stimulation hydraulique, ainsi que sur son effet spatial autour du puits. INTRODUCTIONPour le développement de l’exploitation géothermique de type Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS), la phase de stimulation conditionne grandement le succés du projet ; en effet, elle a pour objectif d’augmenter l’injectivité et la productivité des puits et doit permettre d’assurer la connexion entre les puits d’injection et de production garantissant ainsi la viabilité technique et économique de l’échangeur. Pour le site EGS de Soultz-sous-Forêts (France), parmi différentes techniques de stimulation, la stimulation hydraulique a été utilisée à cette fin en provoquant une augmentation irréversible de la perméabilité autour des puits. Dans ce type de réservoirs fracturés, le but des stimulations hydrauliques est de réactiver, plus spécifiquement en cisaillement, des structures hydrauliques pré-existantes (fractures, zones de failles etc.) dans le socle cristallin. La compréhension des phénomènes physiques durant la stimulation hydraulique est cruciale pour optimiser cette technologie et pour contrôler/limiter les risques associés (viabilité technique et économique des puits, sismicité induite etc.). C’est notamment le cas pour la relation entre le comportement mécanique des structures stimulées et les conséquences sur le comportement hydraulique dans un contexte tectonique spécifique."
