El reencauche de neumáticos es un proceso que consiste en adicionar, previa evaluación y reparación, una capa de caucho al casco original, de manera que se pueda reutilizar y evitar consumir uno nuevo. Si bien este proceso no es una práctica común, pues se tiene la creencia de que no es rentable, en Minera Las Bambas se viene implementando con éxito. En el 2017, para una flota de 44 camiones Komatsu 930, se desecharon 542 neumáticos en la medida 53/80 R 63, mientras que en el 2018, al reencauchar 130 neumáticos, se desecharon 187 neumáticos menos, equivalentes a 654.5 toneladas anuales. Esto, replicado por los 30 años de estimado de vida de la mina, resulta en 19 635 toneladas menos de desechos contaminantes, con lo que se logra una reducción considerable del impacto en el medio ambiente.

The commercial production of copper metal involves a sequence of purification stages. One step of this process eliminates bulk quantities of iron and sulphur from matte Cu2S(FeS to produce blister containing 95.5 per cent copper. This task is traditionally performed in the Pierce-Smith converter, a cylindrical vessel in widespread use throughout the copper industry. Typically, multiple Pierce-Smith converters are arranged along an aisle, simplifying material transfer from vessel to vessel. Materials are moved through the aisle in pots and boats, using overhead cranes. In terms of the overall process, the converter aisle represents a critical processing unitùit contributes significantly to the value added nature of the metal. The aisle is subject to significant process disturbances. Thus, improvements in the operationÆs modes and conditions have a direct impact on process profitability. As with any commercial operation, improvements are always sought to increase process performance. The general approach involves process modelling, followed by an application of control and optimisation theory to this model. The results of such a study are then applied to the real process, leading to improved performance.

IN recent years, solders containing 20 per cent tin with no bismuth or cadmium have been developed by a few companies, and personnel have been properly instructed in their use. In addition, since the tin shortage, a number of solders containing less than 10 per cent Sn, and some with no tin, are being used in special applications; however, a solder of this type has yet to be developed that is satisfactory for general use. [ ] The purpose of this investigation was to develop an alloy containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin, with no cadmium or bismuth, having solder properties equivalent to or better than those of substitute solders now specified containing i8 to 20 per cent tin (Table I), or even approaching the properties of the standard 40 to 60 tin-lead solder. The wartime restriction of bismuth and cadmium, elements that have beneficial effects on fluidity, solidification range and strength, makes it increasingly difficult to develop a general-purpose solder containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin. In the course of this investigation, 11 elements were used in various combinations with the basic 15-85 tin-lead alloy. These elements were antimony, silver, copper, indium, thallium, lithium, calcium, barium, potassium, sodium and arsenic. In all, 116 low-tin solders were investigated, with the idea of developing a solder that will give satisfactory working properties, specifically in regard to "wetting" of copper, brass and iron, solidification range, capillarity and shear strength of a soldered joint. The relative importance of these various properties plays an important role in the search for substitute solders, since it is almost impossible to retain all of the desired qualities of a high-tin solder and still make drastic changes in the alloy composition. Because of the expected uses of a general-purpose solder, it is necessary that it have properties, especially in regard to wettability, that will enable it to be used on the metals in common use. BASIC CONSIDERATIONS The maximum liquidus temperature of a solder is determined by the particular application involved and the temperature that can be obtained by the source of heat.

The plated gold being used by the electronics industry can be broadly classified into two categories: soft gold and hard gold. Soft gold is used for circuit metallization and for bonding semiconductor chips, while hard gold is indispensable as the contact material on electrical connectors, electromechanical relays, and printed circuit boards. The traditional baths from which to plate soft gold as well as hard gold contain the cyanide complex, [Au(CN)2]-, as the source of gold, which liberates free cyanide ions during the plating. The free cyanide is not only highly toxic but also attacks photoresists used to delineate circuit patterns and bonding pads. For these reasons, non-cyanide baths are in use to plate soft gold, whereas hard gold can be plated only from cyanide baths at present. In this presentation, the current status of both electrolytic and electroless non-cyanide processes for plating soft gold will be reviewed.

At temperatures above 950°F, zirconium which has been strained a critical amount will experience critical recrystalli-zation. The large grain size thus formed can result in a reduction in the fatigue life by a factor of 2 to a factor of 9 at both high and low temperatures. The critical strains for zirconium vary from 15 pct at 900°F to about 2 pct at 1125°F, while those for zircaloy III vary from 15 pct at 1050°F to 5 pct at 1200°F. Zircaloy II ,experiences no critical recrystallization up to 1200°F. ZIRCONIUM has become increasingly important for nuclear applications and is being employed in reactors at temperatures where recrystallization can occur. Recent work' on the fatigue properties of zirconium has shown that coarse-grained structures developed in zirconium during recrystallization have much lower fatigue lives than fine-grained material. The development of these large grain sizes under such conditions is well known to be the result of critical recrystallization.2-4 Briefly, critical recrystallization occurs when a metal is strained a critical amount and annealed in the recrystallization range. The critical strain is defined as that minimum strain necessary to promote nucleation in the time unit and temperature considered. The maximum grain size occurs at the critical strain, since at this strain the fewest stable nuclei per unit volume grow into new grains. Recrystallization is not evident below this; strain since the nucleation rate is vanishingly lolw, and metal strained more than the critical amount has a higher nucleation rate per unit volume which results in a finer grained structure. This paper describes the critical recrystallization observed in reactor-grade zirconium, zircaloy 11, and zircaloy I11 as a function of annealing temperature and temperature of strain. EXPERIMENTAL The zirconium used was hafnium-free, double arc-melted sponge obtained from the Bureau of Mines. The ingots were forged and hot reduced to 0.08 to 0.10-in. sheet and subsequently cold reduced to 0.035-in. sheet with intermediate and final anneals at 1200 OF for 15 min. The zircaloy II and zircaloy III used were 0.035-in. sheets in the annealed condition. Compositions of these materials as tested are given in Table I. To determine the critical strain at a given temperature, tensile specimens having a0.065-in. taper in a 2-in. gage length were machined from the sheets parallel to the rolling direction. The specimens were polished, etched, and examined metallographically to ensure that all of them were strain-free, initially. Tukon indentations were made every half millimeter along the gage length of each specimen. These served as fiducial marks enabling the plastic strain to be measured with a microscope and micrometer stage. The specimens were pulled to failure at a rate of 0.002 in. per min in an Instron tensile-testing machine. Three temperatures were used for straining: room temperature, 500 ºF, and 900 ºF. The 500º and 900 ºF tests were run in an argon atmosphere. Since the rate of work hardening changes with temperature, a different critical strain was obtained for each temperature of strain. Specimens, prepared in the manner described, were annealed in vacuunl at various temperatures ranging from 900" to 1200 F for up to 1000 hr, after which they were examined metallographically. The critical strain and the recrystallized grain size as a function of strain were determined for each specimen. Results for the same temperature and time indicated that the critical strain measured was reproducible to within 5 pct of each other. "Approximately 2.0 million tonnes of phosphate rock is imported from the U.S. to Alberta annually and is used in the production of agricultural fertilizers. No phosphate rock is presently mined in Canada, although sources of igneous phosphate have been mined in the past. Sedimentary phosphate rock is found in nine geological units within the Cordilleran Foothills and Front Ranges region of Alberta. The Devonian-Mississippian Exshaw Formation, Permo-Pennsylvanian Rocky Mountain Supergroup, and the Jurassic Fernie Formation have the best potential f or future development. Most of the phosphate rock in Alberta is of low grade and lies within restricted land use areas. The best over-all resource potential lies in the Fernie basin area of southeastern British Columbia, in the Fernie Formation. The possibility of deep phosphate rock deposits in the plains region should be examined.Phosphate rock is mined in Idaho, Utah, Montana and Florida, and is shipped to Canadian fertilizer plants for processing. Raw phosphate rock is acidified, usually with sulphuric acid, by a wet process. Varying amounts of ammonia are added, and the fertilizer is pelletized. Future research, in western Canada, is needed in the beneficiating of low-grade ores and in the area of in situ mining. At the present time, phosphate rock sells for around US$50Itonne, and Alberta fertilizer companies probably pay in the range of C$7D-$85Itonne for U.S. phosphate rock delivered to the plant. Environmental concerns about phosphate rock processing are centred around gypsum tailing ponds, and radioactive wastes.U.S. supplies of phosphate rock are secure until the year 2000; however, by this time, the richer deposits in the U.S. may be exhausted. Alternate deposits, such as the ones in Alberta and British Columbia, might then be considered. Phosphate byproducts, such as uranium, vanadium, fluorine and rare earth elements, may help in making the processing of low-grade Canadian phosphates economically feasible."

This paper addresses the state and federal permit- ting requirements and regulatory constraints associated with the development of new "grass roots" surface coal mines in the Western United States. Since a major portion of new coal development in the West will be on federally leased coal in Wyoming, my comments are directed towards that geographical area. This will give the reader some insight into the current regulatory framework within which western mining companies must operate-i.e., the major applicable state and federal laws and regulations, the more important state and federal regulatory agencies, and the major construction and operating permits that are required. Before discussing the impact of the regulations on our business, I would like to tell you something of my company and then briefly discuss Exxon's forecast of the long range outlook for coal. Carter Mining is an Won affiliated surface coal mining company. Exxon became interested in the coal business in the mid 1960's with the recognition of the future need for alternative fuel sources. Since that time, it has acquired coal reserves located in Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, Arkansas, Texas, Illinois and West Virginia. Carter's first surface mine, the Rawhide Mine, located north of Gillette, Wyoming began production in August, 1977. Our second surface mine, Caballo, located just south of Gillette, began operating last October. We have a third block of federally leased coal just east of Gillette. By 1985 we anticipate Carter's western surface mines will be producing at an annual rate of 30 million tons, subject, of course, to successful market development efforts and regulatory considerations. Rawhide will ultimately have a permitted capacity of 24 MM tons per year. The coal at Rawhide is in two seams; one 80 feet in thickness and the other 20 feet (including a 6 to 10 foot parting). A large shovel is used to remove the overburden, and a similar shovel and dragline are used to mine the coal. Caballo has a 75 foot seam; otherwise it is similar in design and operation to the Rawhide Mine.

The search for environmentally friendly and cost-effective methods for gold extraction has been undertaken in order to provide alternatives to the use of cyanide leaching in the gold industry. Among such alternative reagents is the combination of chloride and hypochlorite ions due to their oxidation of metallic gold and its complexation. Therefore, the current work aims at investigating gold leaching from an oxidized material by means of a solution comprising calcium hypochlorite and sodium chlorite. The sample used in the current research contained 66.1% Fe2O3, 20.4%SiO2, and 35.7 g/t of Au. In addition, XRD and SEM-EDS analysis revealed iron oxide, quartz and muscovite as the main crystalline phases in the sample. For comparison purposes, cyanidation of the oxidized material resulted in 90% gold extraction in 24 h. The reference conditions for the leaching tests with the chlorite-hypochlorite system were: particle size −37 μm, solid/liquid ratio of 10% (w/v), 10 g/L NaCl, 10 g/L Ca (OCl)2, pH 5–6, 3 h of leaching. The effects of the: (i) Ca(OCl)2 concentration, (ii) NaCl concentration, (iii) pHrange and (iv) the effect of pulp density in the extraction of gold were assessed. In addition, the stability of the hypochlorite solutions (OCl−) was investigated. The ideal concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 and NaCl were determined as 25 g/L and 15 g/L, respectively, whereas the optimal pH range was 4–6. Under these conditions, the final gold extraction reached approximately 84%. By varying the solids content of the pulp (10%, 20% and 30%), it was observed that the lower solids value resulted in greater gold extraction (84%). The degradation of the hypochlorite solution and the possible catalytic effect of the presence of the solid were evidenced. To sumup, in the experiment, high gold extractions were achieved in shorter periods of time (3 h), as compared to the cyanidation of the same sample. On the other hand, itwas necessary to use significant amounts of the reagent due to hypochlorite instability at the pH conditions recommended for high gold extractions.

Optimisation of mining projects is directly related to effective and efficient management of risks through the life cycle of mining projects. Effective and efficient management of risks must include explicitly all aspects of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) through the life cycle of mining projects. This paper presents a different scale of OHS in the context of the optimisation of mining projects. Meaning of risk through the project life cycle is explained. Complex relationships between numerous risk, safety, knowledge, culture and change variables, and project life cycles are shown. The key element developed in this paper is a multi-disciplinary knowledge base that is necessary for constructive development of risk management and OHS models through the life cycle of mining projects.

Before exploration programmes or minerals developments are formulated, a mining company ought to assess how capital can be returned if the project is successful. A fact not well appreciated by the minerals community is that it is often difficult to get money out of many Pacific Rim countries due to special foreign exchange controls or restrictions on dividend or capital repatriation. On top of this risk are factors such as creeping expropriation through administrative, fiscal, or corruption pressures; environmental regulations; terrorists; and organised labour and political activists. Political risk is much more than just expropriation or nationalisation.Political risk factors can make or break a project in many PacRim countries and just the cost of delays and negotiations can insidiously affect project economics. This unpalatable thought, however, can be readily addressed by either legal structuring e.g. offshore proceeds accounts, offset/back-to-back currency hedges, or political risk insurance for the equity as well as any subsequent project development debt.

It is a matter of importance to use the lower alkyl monoethers of propylene glycol (polyPGME) as a frother in sulfide mineral flotation, for their compounds are highly soluble in water and are surface active frothers to some extent. The purpose of this study is to clarify fundamental roles of frothers in sulfide mineral flotation by investigating the effects of polyPGME on the floatability of galena with xanthate and adsorption property those ethers at the liquid/air interface. Fundamental investigation on the flotation of sulfide minerals using o,o-dialkyl dithiophosphates has been carried out through galena floatability tests in the following two cases:(l)single use of dithiophosphate for sulfide mineral collection and (2) joint use of dithiophosphates for its collection.

The ability to predict the effects of longwall mining on topography and surface structures is important for any coal company in making permit applications and anticipating potential mining problems. The sophisticated finite element model described and evaluated in this paper is based upon five years of underground and surface observations and evolutionary development of modeling techniques and attributes. The model provides a very powerful tool to address subsidence and other ground control questions. The model can be used to calculate post-mining stress and strain conditions at any horizon between the mine and the ground surface. This holds the promise of assisting in the prediction of mining-related hydrological effects.

"For a period of several years, beginning with 1915, there has been a continuous change in the quality of motor gasoline. The average volatility has decreased, this to the fact that higher boiling fractions of the crude oil have been included in the gasoline. This change in quality was made necessary by the tremendous increase in the demand for motor fuel, caused by the development of the motor car, and during the war was an absolute necessity to avoid gasoline shortages. The Bureau of Mines has kept in close touch with this situation by making surveys from time to time of the gasolines sold throughout the country, as this information is of value to manufacturers and users of motor cars and also indicates when any changes are required in the Government specifications. The Bureau has just completed a gasoline survey and is in a position to make public the fact that there has been very little change in the quality of motor gasoline in recent months.During the period from January 17 to February 3, 1920, 81 samples of actor gasoline were collected by representatives of the Bureau of Mines in seven districts of the United States. The cities selected for this survey were New York, N. Y., including Brooklyn; Washington, D. C.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; Chicago, Ill.; New Orleans, La.; Salt Lake City, Utah; and San Francisco, Cal., including Berkeley. In every case the samples collected were taken in such a manner as to represent material actually being sold as motor fuel, and to include samples from each refinery marketing in the district."

However, these are often misused or not used because there are no prescriptive regulatory requirements and typically urban blasting guidelines do not exist. The relationship between the increasingly negative publicity that the urban blasting industry receives and the existing state of regulatory control on blasting in urban environments is presented.

The most common method of treating mine drainage to prevent water pollution consists of neutralization and aeration. This process removes the acidity, iron, aluminum, and some other heavy metals, but does not render a water suitable for domestic or industrial use because of the high dissolved solids, hardness, and sulfate in the treated water. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has been sponsoring and conducting research since 1966 on the use of reverse osmosis (R.O.) for the treatment of mine drainage. This process has been found to be highly effective in the removal of nearly all the dissolved solids. In addition, since R.O. is a concentrating process, potentials for recovery of valuable heavy metals are possible. This paper is a review of the state-of-the-art on the treatment of mine drainage by reverse osmosis.

Tungsten metal in fused form and of high purity was prepared by reducing tungstic oxide with redistilled calcium metal in a heavy-walled sealed reactor. Alloys of tungsten with vanadium, molybdenum) chromium, columbium, and tantalum were prepared by coreduction of mixed metal oxides in the same manner. This work was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to investigate new approaches for preparing tungsten and its alloys in high-purity form. The standard method of producing tungsten metal has been the reduction of tungstic oxides by hydrogen. The resulting metal powder is compacted, sintered, and fabricated by powder metallurgy methods. Long experience in this field has resulted in the development of a technology that (by careful control of the variables such as metal composition, particle size, and sinterng technique) is well adapted to producing wire and the small shapes usually prepared from tungsten metal.

Superconductivity is one of the most remarkable scientific phenomena ever investigated. It is the phenomenon whereby some materials exhibit zero resistance to the passage of an electric current when cooled to low temperatures, and requires a quantum mechanical explanation. Four Nobel prizes in physics have been awarded specifically on the subject of superconductivity, with many more enabled by superconducting technology. For example, particle beams are generated in accelerators and manipulated in ?particle beam lines? in the ?Big Physics? projects around the world eg. at CERN, Geneva, leading to major discoveries in fundamental particle physics. Similarly, at the JET Propulsion laboratory near Oxford, U.K, controlled nuclear fusion has been demonstrated, and magnetic containment of plasmas is key. In the chemical and biological sciences high field NMR spectroscopy has become indispensable for examining organic matter, revealing the mysteries of the workings of cells, genetics, and in the development of new polymers and pharmaceuticals. With all these very advanced uses for superconducting magnets, it is easy to forget that superconductivity is big business, not just a scientific curiosity. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) superconducting magnets, the key component of high resolution body scanners, use approximately half of the world?s superconducting wire ? the other half being mostly used in accelerator magnets. The MRI market is about 3 billion dollars per annum, and one MRI magnet uses 200km of wire. New applications for superconducting magnets are now appearing including ?Catheter steering?, enabling much shorter timescales for life-saving brain tumour removals and ?Functional MRI?, a whole new area in patient diagnostics. Whilst the use of low temperature superconductors (LTS) is now well established commercially in superconducting magnets and niche electronic applications, the application of LTS in electric power distribution and transport has been very limited to date. It is now more than fifteen years since the so-called High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) materials were discovered: these can be operated at liquid nitrogen temperatures rather than liquid helium temperatures. However, materials processing and scale-up issues have prevented their widespread use, and in particular the required price/performance criteria are only beginning to be reached except in certain niche markets. BSCCO (Bismuth Strontium Calcium Copper Oxide) tapes up to one km long are now readily available, and have been demonstrated in high current cables for power distribution networks, but the general consensus is that 1) it is difficult to reduce the price much further because of the silver matrix required and 2) in applications where coils are required eg. motors, generators, transformers etc the properties of BSCCO are rather poor because of the critical current dependence on magnetic field. Magnetic fields are always associated with coils and windings, and such fields are of course fundamental to the operation of all electrical machines. YBCO (Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide) however, has good characteristics in field and for the last few years there has been intensive research and development costing several tens of millions of dollars worldwide into the scale-up of production of so-called ?coated conductor?. This ?second generation? tape can be produced by any of many different film deposition techniques, with more or less success for short lengths, but as yet it is unavailable in lengths more than a few tens of metres.

Ear Mountain is an isolated mountain mass that rises abruptly from the coastal plain on the northwest shore of the Seward Peninsula. Geologically it resembles the more accessible Brooks Mountain and Cape Mountain areas to the southwest, being composed of a granitic core surrounded and partly capped by metamorphosed sediments. The occurrence of lode- and placer-tin deposits in this area has been known since the early 1900's, when the Seward Peninsula region was prospected extensively for both gold and tin. The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated the tin deposits in the Ear Mountain area during the 1953 and 1954 field seasons. The objectives were to delimit the areas in which tin minerals occur, as a guide to future prospecting, and to determine the amount of tin in the known prospects. Work by the Bureau of Mines included both placer and lode sampling.

WORK on the effect of vacuum heat treatment of 0.040 in. diam sintered and wrought molybdenum wires has been sponsored by the Office of Naval Research at Battelle for the past several years. An electrical resistance furnace' capable of maintaining a vacuum of less than 0.1 micron of mercury at temperatures as high as 4000 °F was used for heat treating the wires. Early in the work, it was found that the introduction of a few microns pressure of oxygen into the furnace resulted in a rapid increase in the oxygen content of the wire specimens and the appearance of a discrete oxide phase. Subsequent elimination of the oxygen atmosphere caused the disappearance of the oxide phase. This was used to determine the solid solubility of oxygen in molybdenum over the temperature range of 2000" to 3000°F.2 It was observed that, with the disappearance of the oxide phase, the wires regained some ductility. Single-phased wires possessed from 5 to as much as 40 pct elongation in 2 in. Later, attention became centered on determining the cause of this wide range in ductility. Wires containing less than 0.002 pct C, less than 0.0007 pct 0, less than 0.0005 pct N, and less than 0.00003 pct H exhibited the erratic ductility noted above. These percentages represent approximately the limit of accuracy of presently available methods of analysis and thus it became apparent that chemical analysis would be of little help in the study. A number of possible explanations for the wide range in ductility were suggested during the course of the work. It was first suspected that variations in the grain size of the recrystallized wire specimens might be responsible. Wire from several lots of material was available. One of these lots tended to develop very large grains when recrystallized, the others all developed an ASTM grain size of 3 to 4 when heated above 2700°F. No correlation between grain size and ductility could be found. It was thought that back diffusion of oil from the diffusion pump might cause contamination of the wire, principally with carbon, but when wires were treated without cooling the cold trap in the pumping system,
