Onoda Cement Co., Tsukumi is one of the largest limestone producer in Japan. From mines called Suisho and Ganji, it supplies limestone for cement plant, lime manufacture, iron and steel industries and for many purposes. The Suisho mine is highly productive, though it's operations are governed by the utmost regard for its impact on the surrounding environment. However, it became difficult to meet additional expanding demand and to assure continuity of high rate production. Present production rate 1s 6 million tons per year. The Ganji mine, some 2 km south west of the Suisho mine, began first-stage development In mid- 1973 and in january I976 started production. The capacity of major facilities is 9 million tons per year. Full production is predicted in 1979. Mining and milling methods of these mines under strict environmental considerations are discussed.

U.A. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal dust compliance data sometimes shows high silica levels at roof bolters. However, it is unclear whether this silica normally originates from the bolter itself or from other dust sources upwind of the bolter research studies to answer this question at individual mines have been conducted. However, operational practices vary from mine to mine thus, the information gleaned from any one study cannot be accurately extrapolated to describe silica dust sources in most mines. In this paper, three decades of bolter dust research are reviewed the results showed that, while inadequate maintenance on the bolter dust collection system can result in excessive dust, more likely reasons for high silica levels are inadequate ventilation of the mine entries being bolted and dust traveling downwind from the continuous miner to the bolter. As an older member of The AusIMM, I received my 30 year æPearl AwardÆ in June and had my 50th birthday two weeks ago, I am honoured to be here today. I thank those responsible for their confidence in me and in my ability to hopefully hold captive a broad group of individuals who are here as equals, sharing an interest, no a passion in blasting technology and associated works à over the two days you will hear some excellent operational and technical presentations I am sure. But today I will digress; I want to talk about the importance of leadership and how it indeed can be the catalyst for success, improvement and change. There has been much written about leadership, its principals, the charismatic leaders, the doÆs and donÆts and so on à and I for one am not about to give you the Holy Grail; there are many experts with greater wisdom than I on this subject matter. What I do want to do is explore the application of this passion to examples within the world stage and some examples drawn from my experience in mining.

Development in the Jackson gas field, Hinds and Rankin counties, for 1935 continued at a slow pace, there being only nine wells drilled on the structure, of which five resulted in gas producers and four in dry holes. There were no wells drilled deep enough during 1935 to test any of the horizons below the producing Selma chalk. There are 113 producing gas wells in the Jackson gas field, with three wells on the southeast edge of the field making some oil with a large quantity of salt water; this oil comes from the same horizon as the gas. The combined open flow of the 113 gas wells is about 4,100,000,000 cu. ft. The proven area of the field is approximately 8000 acres. The production of 10,291,000,000 cu. ft. for 1935 represents the largest yearly pull from the field by almost a billion cubic feet. The total production from the field to date is 45,104,000,-000 cu. ft. It is interesting to note that the rock pressure has dropped from 1010 lb. per sq. in. initial to 943 Ib. at the end of 1935, a decline of only 67 lb. in 6 years. There is a difference of opinion as to the age of the deepest formation tested on the Jackson structure; some people holding that it is Tuscaloosa, others, Trinity, and still others that it is Paleozoic, probably Pottsville. The production of the Amory gas field, Monroe County, continued to decline and the capacity was far under the demand. Originally there were four producing wells in the field with a combined open-flow capacity of approximately 15,000,000 cu. ft. and a rock pressure of 680 lb. per sq. in. At the end of 1935 only two wells were producing with a combined open-flow of less than 1 million cu. ft. and the rock pressure down to 100 lb. or less. No attempt has been made to drill new wells in the immediate field but three wells are being drilled in the county in an effort to secure new supplies of gas. The wildcat operations for 1935, with only 11 wells drilled, were the lowest since 1932, just about one-half the number drilled during 1934. None of the wildcat wells drilled in 1935 resulted in producers and, so far as the writer is aware, did not uncover any large structures. The 11 wells drilled were abandoned or junked at comparatively shallow depths, except the well drilled in George County to 6928 ft. by the United Gas

The presence of moderate to high concentrations of colloidal clays in coal preparation plant waters can cause serious operating and economic problems for a coal company. Among the host of possible problems are the following: 1) Poor separation of clays in the plant thickener, resulting in: a) Increased ash in the clean coal. b) Increased specific gravity of the wash water and decreased coal recoveries at the desired quality. c) Increased thickener operating costs in trying to overcome the problem. 2) Decreased solid concentrations in the thickener underflow and increased pumping requirements to meet solids withdrawal requirements.

"Biological cementation of the Mandena heavy mineral sand deposit in Madagascar was causing difficulty in dredge mining and hence in planning and control of production rates. An investigation was initiated to better evaluate the geotechnical properties of the orebody by defining the distribution and geotechnical properties of the cemented strata, in order to generate a site-specific geotechnical model for the deposit. The geotechnical characterization was developed by an integrated approach using several ground investigation techniques such as piezocone (CPTu) testing, geotechnical drilling, standard penetration testing (SPT), as well as laboratory testing. The final outcomes of the investigation included a 3D geotechnical model showing the distribution and extent of the cemented areas, as well as the typical geotechnical parameter ranges associated with each of the defined geotechnical units. The interpretations developed were incorporated into the mine and production planning to ultimately optimize operational planning and control.IntroductionQIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) is a heavy mineral sand mining operation at Mandena, near Fort Dauphin in Madagascar. During the final planning and commissioning stages of the project, the need to fully characterize the unusual geotechnical conditions was identified and a geotechnical investigation became necessary.Nature of the problemDuring the commissioning phase it was found that mining production was being hampered by biologically cemented/indurated layers encountered within the sands. Closer inspection of the indurated horizons in the dredging face revealed that these layers contain a high loading of bacteria and fungi. It appears that the bacteria produce an extracellular (outside the cell) polysaccharide (i.e. sugar and carbon salts), which form a gelling biofilm to trap nutrients. There are a number of different bacteria. The fungi, on the other hand, produce a network of fibrous strands that bind the sand grains together. Thus both bacteria and fungi probably contribute to the ‘apparent cohesive’ strength or binding of the indurated sand (Lynn, 2008)."

Detailed monitoring of point sources of groundwater pollution is expensive due to the high cost of drilling monitoring boreholes. Whether groundwater pollution is due to mining, industrial or domestic waste disposal, a universal difficulty when monitoring groundwater contamination is the placement of boreholes to adequately define the extent of the pollution plume. This paper reports groundwater 'resistivity variations determined from transient electromagnetic soundings at a domestic waste disposal site north of Perth in Western Australia. Together with available hydrogeological and water quality data, the geophysics provides a broad "plume scale" picture of groundwater contamination. A simple three dimensional model of plume development, which takes account of the dimensions of the wastes, has also been developed and shows good agreement with the spread of contamination indicated by the geophysics for relatively small values of the dispersivities. Better estimates of these parameters are still required. The work indicates that a combination of geophysics and modelling with ground-truth data from groundwater quality monitoring of boreholes is required to avoid difficulties in interpretation of data and to better define the extent and migration of pollution in Groundwater.

A standard technique for heat treating small metallurgical samples where no appreciable contamination from the atmosphere can be tolerated is that of sealing small samples in evacuated fused-silica tubes. Since vitreous silica is relatively impervious to diffusion of gases, even at temperatures approaching the devitrification range, around 1100°C, this simple procedure has been very widely adopted as a standard technique in metallurgical research. JAMAICA-bauxite and gypsum-but what else? J Does the Caribbean island have anything more to offer in the form of mineral wealth? One answer may be iron ore deposits which show enough promise to warrant exploitation in the near future by a company associated with Standard Ore & Alloys Corp. In addition, Jamaica is reported to have gold, silver, platinum, copper, lead, zinc, manganese, cobalt, and a great many nonmetallic minerals. Of these, only platinum has not been produced commercially in the past. Right now, Jamaican bauxite is getting most of the publicity, but not too long ago other mining operations were in progress. Lack of proper interest, insufficient roads, and scarcity of venture capital forced those mining properties to suspend production.

This paper presents recent advancements in the MillMapper software technology, developed and used for thickness gauging of liners of cylindrical grinding mills used for mineral comminution. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanner data captured inside a mill to determine thickness at several million points on all liner surfaces with millimetre accuracy. The paper is structured as follows. First, a review of the technology and its numerous advantages over existing techniques and the value it adds to operations are presented. These are followed by discussion of recently-implemented innovations, including improved visualisation and inspection tools, automatic ball charge volume measurement and automatic mill liner volume/weight measurement. Results from its application at several sites in Australia are presented throughout.

The current status and history of innovation in magnetic methods of material treatment are reviewed. The milestones and key drivers of innovation in magnetic separation are identified, advantages of this technology in comparison to other physical methods of material manipulation are discussed and reasons for its failure to live up to its potential and expectations are indicated. Derailers that were responsible for the implementation failures are identified. The future focus in such diverse areas as mineral processing, waste treatment, recycling and biosciences is discussed and the research and development needs are outlined.

Manufacture of lightweight concrete aggregate from common shale is one of the most rapidly growing industries in the field of nonmetallic or industrial minerals. Although expanded shale" has been in use since it was developed by Stephen J. Hayde in 1917, it was not until after World War II that it became a substantial competitor with other aggregates. There are some 70 plants now producing this aggregate in the United States, approximately half of them in states west of the Mississippi River. Expanding plants throughout the U. S. are grouped around major urban centers such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Denver. Concrete made with expanded shale aggregate combines the desirable features of low weight with relatively high strength, making it especially useful in concrete block, in structural concrete for multi-story buildings and in a variety of specialized concrete products such as prestressed panels and beams, and storage tanks. As the cost of construction continues to rise, lightweight concrete will probably be used in increasing quantities because of its low cost relative to the more traditional construction materials such as wood, brick and steel

L.G. Barcus and Sons, Inc. recently completed a three-phase project for the expansion of Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico for McCarthy Construction Co., the Construction Manager for the project. It was a challenge that allowed Barcus to demonstrate many of it's strengths. Safety of people and property, restricted access, low headroom conditions, extensive planning to maintain hospital operations and a tight schedule were all key elements affecting the successful installation of the Augered Cast-In-Place Piles. Phase I began with installing and performing a 450-ton pile load test on an 18-inch diameter Augerpile 65 ft long. The load test was installed and performed directly in front of the Emergency Room entrance. Space was limited and the E.R. had to remain open with uninterrupted ambulance access. The results of the load test were outstanding. In fact the test pile performed so well that some of the job piles were shortened from 75 ft long to 65 ft long. [ ]

To assist in the reduction of environmental degradation resulting from milling operations, the Bureau of Mines has developed, and successfully demonstrated, chemical, vegetative, and combined chemical-vegetative procedures for stabilizing milling wastes under varying environmental conditions. Costs of achieving reclamation using these stabilization procedures are compared with those of other physical and vegetative approaches. The Bureau's chemical-vegetative procedure for establishing vegetation directly on fine-sized wastes compares favorably with other stabilization processes that have been used.

In 2005, CANMET-MMSL used its pool of expertise in ground control, open pit and underground mine engineering, mineral processing, information technology and applied mineralogy to launch a mine-to-mill research project. The objective of the project was to optimize the distribution of rock breakage energy among blasting, crushing and grinding activities, thereby maximizing the efficiency of energy utilization within comminution processes. Tests were designed to demonstrate that this approach could reduce energy consumption, thus contributing to the reduction of green house gas (GHG) production in the Canadian mining industry. The project was accomplished in collaboration with DynoConsult and Dyno Nobel Canada Inc., a world leader in commercial explosives. Data analysis from 12 blasts (six with electronic and six with pyrotechnic detonators) in three different geological formations of a quarry (soft, medium and hard rock) shows that electronic blasting technology increases rock fragmentation by 15% (in hard rock) to 20% (in soft rock). A more uniform rock fragment size distribution is also obtained. The impact of the improved quality blast product on downstream processes of the quarry is a productivity increase of 5% in rock excavation and transportation, an energy reduction of 10% at the primary crusher and an increase of 15% of the primary crusher throughput. Extended to the Canadian mining industry, such results would represent a GHG emission reduction of about 0.05 Mt/y. A soft-sensor prototype, based on primary crusher data (i.e., energy consumption, throughput, feed and product size distribution) and a simplified computerized process model, was developed for on-line measurement of the rock operating work index. Additionally, 385 rock samples and specimens were collected and prepared to determine the tensile and compressive strength of the rock material, to evaluate the aggregate crushing work index and to examine the development of micro- and macro-fractures by means of binocular and SEM microscopy. Blast-induced rock damage was evaluated at the end of the laboratory-testing program. Even though a reduction of rock hardness of around 30% was observed after blasting, the impact of the blasting method (i.e., use of electronic or pyrotechnic detonators) on the induced rock damage could not be observed. It is either absent or not perceptible with the accuracy of the measuring techniques and the number of samples analyzed.

"INTRODUCTION According to the Roane Iron Co. of Rockwood, Tenn., the Chamberlain. Barnardville iron deposit produced approximately three million tons of iron ore previous to 1928. The deposit is divided into two synclinal bodies termed the north and south synclines. Production has come from the northern extremities of both bodies.The need for developing additional iron-ore reserves during the war prompted the Bureau of Mines to initiate an exploratory program on the Chamberlain-Barnardville deposit in February 1944, which continued until December 1944.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. A range of supported gold catalysts was prepared by ion exchange, varying many of the preparation variables, including concentration in the precursor solution, washing procedure, as well as drying and calcination procedures. These catalysts have been characterized extensively. TEM images show essentially the same crystallite size distributions, between 2?5 nm, for almost all catalysts, the only exception being catalysts not washed in ammonia, which did not show any small crystallites. Additional characterization with SEM yielded an interesting discovery. Catalysts that appear identical on the TEM also contain some large crystallites in the range of 50?500 nm. Differences in dispersion due to the drying procedure not seen on the TEM can now be observed. Oxygen chemisorption is being investigated as an additional method to characterize gold based catalysts to complement the typically used electron microscope techniques.

Industrial Minerals commodity profiles are continued from May's Annual Review issue. Diatomite G. Coombs, Manville Sales Corp. Growth in US diatomite production continued to lag in 1986. The US Bureau of Mines estimated that 580 kt (640,000 st) were produced last year. This is a 1%0 growth over 1985. The cumulative growth from the 1982 low point is 4.4%. Present production, though, is still only 90% of the high tonnage of 1979. The industry will see increased competitive activity with the start-ups of two new mines and production facilities in California and Oregon. US production has come primarily from Lompoc, CA, Bassalt, Clark Station, and Lovelock, NV, and Quincy, WA. New production, probably with capacities of 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) each, have started near Burney, CA, and Vale, OR. Eagle Picher's new, full-line filter aid and filler plant at Celatom, Vale, OR, was dedicated in August. The plant uses diatomite from the Celatom mining district in Juntura, OR. Grefco's new filter aid and filler plant near Burney, CA, was ready in July. It produced flux calcined products through a single kiln and can handle both bag and bulk shipments. The operations are in Shata County with the plant and mine at the same site. Manville Specialties Group is moving its Filtration and Minerals Division headquarters and research staffs to Lompoc, CA. The move is intended to strengthen response and performance by locating research, marketing, and production close together. Diatomite is processed in three methods: natural, calcined, and flux calcined. The natural is dried to remove water and is particle size classified. Calcined or straight calcined products have been sintered to modify particle size or permeability. Flux calcination, or flux sintering, has a stronger influence on permeability and also benefits color. The unique structure of diatomite is used in a range of particle sizes from fine paint fillers, to coarser filter aids, to granular aggregates. Dimension stone L. Meade, Geomapping Associates Ltd. 1986 was another good year for dimension stone production. The trend toward using marble, granite, limestone, sandstone, and slate has created an increasing demand. According to US Bureau of Mines 1986 estimates, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of dimension stone, with a value of $173 million, was produced by 200 companies. This is an increase from 1985, where 220 companies produced 1 Mt (1.12 million st) valued at $172 million. The increased production volume and decreased unit value is due to the competition from imports. The net import reliance in 1986 was 68% compared to 62% in 1985. The value of imports was $374 million in 1986 versus $295 million the year before. In an effort to maintain their market share, domestic finishers, particularly in the granite industry, continued to upgrade plants and machinery during 1986. In addition, offshore dollars have financed a number of fabricating facilities in North America that will finish imported rough stock. It is hoped that this increased domestic production capability will capitalize on a devalued US dollar. The trend has been for growth in stone usage and market. This trend is continuing with increased public awareness and desire for natural stone in buildings. The area of greatest market growth is expected to be in residential and interior decorative stone usage. Use of sophisticated, automated equipment has made the cost more affordable. Now lobbies, foyers, and specialty rooms are being clad in stone. Dolomite J. Welshimer, National Lime & Stone Co. About three-quarters of dolomite production is used as construction aggregates and 10% to 20% is sold or used as an industrial mineral. Total limestone and dolomite consumed for chemical and metallurgical purposes is about 136 Mt/a (150 million stpy). Sales of industrial dolomitic products were somewhat stronger in 1986 than levels recorded in the early 1980s. Some of the sales' strength, however, can be attributed to reductions in the number of active mining and processing operations. The industry will probably undergo further consolidation by the end of this decade. This will be due primarily to the continued softening in demand by the steel industry. Dolomitic limestone deposits being mined for raw materials for the steel, glass, and refractory in¬dustries are generally 54% calcium carbonate and 45% magnesium carbonate by weight. Impurities composed of silicon, aluminum, iron, sulfur, and phosphorous, represent less than 1%. The heaviest concentration of high purity, surface mineable dolomite in the US is in northwestern Ohio. Crushed and sized dolomitic limestone is a basic raw material for the iron and steel industry. It is also used as feed stone or lime kilns. Soft-burned lime is a popular raw material for BOF steel production. It is also used extensively in insulating glass fiber manufacturing. In the majority of industrial operations recovering gold and silver by hydrometallurgical means, cyanide is the predominant lixiviant. However, as an economic alternative, production of massive quantifies of silver chloride was done on an industrial scale in the nitrous-sulfuric acid pressure leaching of a refractory precious metals concentrate. This proven process required no cyanide. Thus, because of the large volumes encountered during day-to-day plant operation, the need for efficient and low cost methods of silver chloride precipitation, reduction and materials handling was mandatory. As such, this paper covers the evolution of plant scale precipitation, filtration, washing, reduction and control of silver chloride processing. As well, an in-depth description of the unique leaching system is included.
