In many mining applications it is not practical to use gravity takeups. In these situations hydraulic takeups are often utilized. Performance specifications are often compromised by designs which have inherently high internal friction and inefficient hydraulic designs. This results in performance which does not match the requirements of the conveyor system. A computer model has been built to check unit efficiencies and field measurements have been taken which verify the results.

During the last year I had occasion, on behalf of our New York copper works, to send to various chemists samples, intended to he accurate, of material which we were buying and selling, and I was astonished to find what differences were reported. After talking over the probable reasons for this with a number of chemists and metallurgists, it was suggested that it would be of real use and some scientific interest to send samples to the different chemists, and take such care in making up the samples that we could feel sure that each chemist had as nearly identical a sample as it was possible to make. "This paper describes the development of a mathematical model for determining the liberation of an ore at various grinding sizes, based on the combined results of microscopic counting, grinding tests, and chemical analysis.The method is illustrated with an application to the magnetite ore of Sherman Mine in Temagomi, Ontario. For this ore, a degree of liberation of 98.7% was determined at a grinding size of 90% passing 44 microns, which closely corresponds to the final grinding size employed at the Sherman Mine Concentrator.Introduction Liberation characteristic of ores have direct and significant bearing on overall economics of concentration processes.Target grades and recoveries can be achieved only it minerals are adequately liberated prior to separation. Degree of liberation depends on the extent of size reduction. However, due to the high costs associated with size reduction processes, it is important to keep size reductions within limits of satisfactory liberation. Prevention of excessive size reduction is also necessary because of inefficient mineral separations in very fine sizes. Hence, a study of reduction size — liberation relationship is essential for optimum profit from milling operations.A number of procedures have been developed for liberation studies (1-12), but there is lack of method for universal adoption.A new approach is presented in this paper that might provide a realistic estimate of liberation and give a practical guidance as to the degree of size reduction required for satisfactory liberation."

The purpose of this investigation was to beneficiate the Talladega gray iron ores by flotation. A component of the problem was the determination of the degree of beneficiation possible by flotation as well as the relative selectivity of certain reagents in promoting flotation of either the iron minerals or the siliceous gangue minerals. The scope of the present investigation involved only the use of small-scale laboratory equipment. Treatment by roasting and magnetic separation was not included in this study, inasmuch as a similar comprehensive investigation was completed and the results were published by the Bureau of Mines in 1927. The results of the work on Talladega iron ores are briefly summarized in this report. In the search for efficient and economic methods of beneficiating low-grade iron ores, the flotation process is among those that are receiving considerable attention. The Talladega ores are of particular interest for a flotation study, because they contain two iron minerals (magnetite and specular hematite) that are somewhat dissimilar in their flotative response.

The movement for Federal endowment of engineering and industrial research was revived early in the present Congress by the introduction of two bills into the Senate. The first bill, introduced by Senator Smith of Georgia, provides for the establishment of an engineering experiment station in each state under the direction of and in connection with some university, engineering school, or land-grant college. The state legislature of each state is authorized to designate the institution best equipped to conduct the work but wherever the land-grant college has facilities approximately equal to those of the other institutions of the state, it shall be designated. All designations of institutions are made subject to the approval of the Secretary of Commerce. The Secretary of Commerce is authorized to secure practical uniformity of methods, and efficiency and economical expenditure of funds by indicating such lines of work as shall seem to him important from a military; naval, industrial or national standpoint, but the responsibility for the initiation and conduct of research shall rest with the individual engineering experiment stations. Uniform standards of research are further provided for by making each experiment station a depository of the Department of Commerce and the Bureau of Standards, and the work of each station shall conform to the standards established by the U. S. Government through said bureau, which may whenever practicable utilize the facilities of the station for the prosecution of research.

The active mines in the Park City district at the present time are the Silver King Coalition, Daly-Judge, Daly West, and Silver King Consolidated. Several other companies, such as the Daly, American Flag, Ontario, etc., are doing considerable development work. In the Silver King Coalition mines the ore is a replacement of a dark siliceous limestone bed, varying in .thickness from 18 in. to several feet. In places the ore has reached a thickness of 25 ft. This limestone bed lies within 100 ft. of the underlying Weber quartzite. There are other lime beds, similar in appearance to this one, in the Park City formation, which is approximately 700 ft. thick; but not one of them has been found to contain any traces of ore. Directly under and in contact with the ore-bearing bed is another, composed of gray lime well studded with dark concretionary nodules; and this one is an unfailing indication of the proximity of the ore-bearing bed. These ore deposits make out from or have connection with some one of the ore-bearing fissures, which were undoubtedly the channels for the circulation of mineral-bearing solutions. It is therefore proper to run prospecting drifts in the fissures, although they seldom contain much ore. As a general rule, drifting in the fissures is not costly. Mining and mucking cost from $2.50 to $4 per foot, and very little timber is required. There are instances, as in the Daly fissure in the Daly-Judge mine, where the expense of keeping drifts open in the fissure is so great that it has proved economical to make the drifts in the foot-wall rock and run crosscuts into the fissure at short intervals. In the Park City mines it is not easy to determine beforehand the best method fir extracting the ore from a newly discovered ore shoot in the bedded deposits. While we may get one dimension from the drift run in the fissure, that will not give us a correct idea as to the other dimensions of the orebody. The fissures here referred to have a N. 35" E.

The rebound phenomenon, which occurs during rockfalls when a rock block impacts with a slope surface, is influenced by several parameters related not only to the slope material but also to the block and the kinematics. The paper presents a small-scale testing campaign undertaken at the LMR (EPFL) to better understand and quantify the bouncing of blocks on granular slopes. The influence of some factors related to the ground material, the block and the kinematics is examined. Bei Steinschlägen wird die Flugbahn eines stürzenden Felsbrockens maßgeblich durch den Abprall vom Hang bestimmt. Der Rückprall hängt von verschiedenen Parametern ab, wobei nicht nur das Hangmaterial sondern auch Blockeigenschaften und Kinematik eine große Rolle spielen. Zum besseren Verständnis dieses Phänomens und seiner Quantifizierung werden am LMR (EPFL) kleinmaßstäbliche Versuchskampagnen auf granulären Materialien durchgeführt. Der vorliegende Artikel stellt die Versuche vor und untersucht den Einfluss verschiedener Boden-, Block- und kinematischer Parameter. Le phénomène de rebond qui se présente lors de l’impact d’un bloc rocheux sur la surface d’un versant dépend non seulement des caractéristiques du terrain, mais aussi de facteurs relatifs au bloc et à la cinématique. L’article présente une campagne d’essais sur modèle réduit entreprise au LMR (EPFL) afin de mieux comprendre et quantifier l’impact de blocs sur des matériaux granulaires. L’influence de divers paramètres relatifs au sol, au bloc et à la cinématique est mise en évidence.

Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is a selective depressant for nickeliferous pyrrhotite during pentlandite flotation. Laboratory flotation tests conducted on ore and process samples showed that pyrrhotite rejection is greatly improved by small additions of DETA; however, the effectiveness of this depressant is most noticeable when the mineral sample is oxidized. LIMS and XPS analyses conducted on flotation products and pyrrhotite specimens showed that the difficulty in pyrrhotite rejection arises from inadvertent activation of the mineral by heavy metal ions, such as Ni2+, cu2+ and Ag+, that are present in the process water. In the presence of DETA, however, the mineral is deactivated under oxidizing conditions. The deactivation mechanism may involve oxidation of the activation products, which are likely in the form of heavy metal sulfides, followed by solubilization by DETA. FTIR spectra of pyrrhotite electrodes contacted with DETA showed no trace of the reagent on the surface, substantiating the view that its role is one of complexing agent that enhances the dissolution of activation products under oxidizing conditions. FTIR spectra of pyrrhotite contacted with amyl xanthate solutions showed that both dixanthogen and iron xanthate are formed on the surface, the latter becoming more predominant at higher potentials. In the presence of DETA, however, only a small amount of xanthate is adsorbed on the mineral at potentials (Eh) approximately 200 mV higher than the case without DETA.

"A hydrometallurgical route was developed to extract metals such as gold, silver, copper, and selenium from anode slime from Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex in Iran. For the extraction of copper by leaching, the anode slime was heated and stirred with 4 M sulphuric acid in the presence of oxygen. Optimal conditions for recovery of copper were temperature 80°C, mixing time 5 hours, and oxygen flow rate 2 L/min, resulting in a copper recovery of 94.47%. Silver and selenium were dissolved by leaching anode slime from which the copper had been removed with nitric acid. For gold extraction, anode slime was heated with aqua regia at 90°, and the gold then extracted with 2-ethyl-hexanol at a concentration of 0.5 M and phase ratio of 4. The extract was then stripped with soda solution at pH=10.5 and a phase ratio of 5. Finally, gold was recovered by precipitation with oxalic acid at a ratio of mass to volume 10 g/L. Total gold recovery was 80%. IntroductionDuring the electrorefining of copper, some metals are accumulated in the byproduct anode slime, which is an important source for recycling and recovery of these metals (Petkova, 1994). In this paper, a hydrometallurgical route is described for the recovery of precious metals from copper anode slime of Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex, which is located in southeastern Iran .Copper anode slime is black or gray powder with a particle size less than 200 mesh. Approximately 2 to 20 kg of anode slime is produced per ton of copper cathode. The slime is characterized by higher amount of Ag, Se, Pb, and Cu compared to other metals and a very low Au content (Khaleghi and Ghader, 2013).The copper anode slimes are composed of 11.69% selenium, 3.93% copper, 5.26% silver, 0.13% gold, and 45% barite, plus lead, tellurium, antimony, sulphur, and silica with small amounts of nickel, iron, zinc, and bismuth. Gold is one of the most important noble metals due to its wide applications in industry and economic importance, so recovery of gold from slime is more appealing than that of other metals. According to the World Gold Council (2013), the demand for gold has increased during the last decade. This increase is due not only to the increasing demands of the jewellery market, but also to the increasing demand for gold in industrial as well as medical applications (Ranjbar et al., 2014)."

Visual observation of the oxidation of columbium shows that the protective behavior noted previously in gravimetric work in the early stages of the reaction below 600°C and throughout the reaction at 640°C is associated with an adherent oxide. The fact that the oxide is seen to move outward from the metal at temperatures from 550° to 935°C implies that the reaction takes place at the oxide-metal interface throughout this temperature range. THE work described in this paper further clarifies the complex oxidation kinetics of Cb revealed, for example, by the continuous gravimetric studies of T. L. Kolski.1 Time-lapse motion picture studies reveal details of the reaction not provided by a study of the combustion products. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Cb specimens were prepared from material with the following typical analysis: 0, 0.03 pct; N, 0.002 pct; C, 0.006 pct; Ta, 0.04 pct; Fe, 0.01 pct; Ni <0.003 pct; and Cr <0.003 pct. Arc-cast ingots were swaged and cold rolled into slabs. These slabs were machined into blocks 7/16 by 7/16 by 7/16 in; 1/16-in. holes were drilled through the large face of the blocks for suspension. The samples were then de-greased and annealed 1 hr at 1200°C in vacuum. The sample was suspended by a platinum and Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple inside a 1-in. quartz tube in a Kanthal wound furnace (2 in. OD by 4 in. long) equipped with windows 1/2 in. sq. A Cine-Kodak Special II 16 mm motion picture camera was trained on the sample through a Spencer microscope adjusted so that a magnification of X1.5 resulted on the film. Super Anscochrome film was used to record the events in color. Argon was flushed through the furnace while the sample came to temperature. The argon was then replaced by a stream of dry oxygen at 1 atm. Pictures were taken at the rate of eight per second for about 20 sec during the change of atmosphere. Then by use of a Stevens time-lapse device pictures were taken at the rate of four per minute starting within 1 min of the initial oxygen flow. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators, as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating, costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. "Diesel exhaust soots were assayed in the Ames Salmonella typhimurium histidine reversion assay system using TA 98, the soots being applied as the following preparations: dispersion in dipaimitoyl glycerophosphoryl choline (DPL), dispersion in dipalmitoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DPP!), and dispersion in dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid (DPPA) in physiological saline, and in physiological saline without added surfactant. The extracts of soots by dichloromethane / dimethylsulfoxide (DCM/BHSO) were also assayed. Studies were performed both with and without :IQ microsomal activation of the soot preparations. The DPP! and DPPA surfactants were chosen as phospholiridz with two palmitic acid moieties esterified to a glycerol as is the case with DPL, but with hydrophilic groups having different electrophilic characters. The soots, without S9 activation, showed mutegenic activity when extracted in the conventional procedure with DCM/DMSO. The mutagenic activity of soots dispersed in DPL was quantitatively comparable to, and in some cases greater than, the activity expressed by an equal mass of soot extracted by DCM/DMSO. Soots in other surfactantpreparations, DPP! and DPPA, also expressed positive mutagenic activity. Praincubation with S9 microsomal enzyme fraction reduced the activity of solvent extracted soots, and greatly diminished the activity of DPL dispersed soots. Initial sister chromatid exchange (SCE) assays using the Chinese hamster V79 cell line indicated DPL dispersed soot also can cause SCR in mammalian cells. Results thus far suggest that surfactant suspended or ""solubilized"" respirable soot particles could provide a mechanism for transport and expression of mutagens in the lung."

The influence of joint orientation and joint persistence, on the mechanical behaviour of jointed rock masses under uniaxial compression, has been studied systematically. The joint inclination angle ß was varied from 0° to 90° with an increment of 15°. The joint continuity factor k was taken as 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8. The peak strength, Young’s modulus, the complete axial stress-axial strain curves, the cracking process and the characteristic of the fragments, were investigated. It was found that the anisotropic response of the jointed specimens was governed by the micro-mechanism, such as crack initiation, propagation and coalescence, crack opening or closing, and frictional slip of cracks or joints. With the increase of joint continuity factor, the axial stress-axial strain curves change from single-peak to multipeak, the peak strength and Young’s modulus decrease. The specimens with medium joint inclination angle (30°,45° and 60°) has lower energy dissipation and strength due to stepped or shear failure, while specimens with small and large joint inclination angle (0°, 15°, 75° and 90°) has higher energy dissipation and strength due to axial cleavage or crushing failure.

Ongoing operations at the Cyprus Miami Smelter involve the use of an electric furnace for settling of copper matte from discard slag. Proper operation of the electric settling furnace is a major factor in minimizing losses of copper to the discard slag. Recent test work at the smelter has shown improvement in the operation of the electric furnace with a subsequent improvement with regard to the copper losses. This paper presents a general discussion of the Cyprus Miami Smelter operation, past results with respect to copper losses, recent operational changes and test work, and the subsequent results.

The stored energy of cold work was investigated in drawn gold-silver wires by tin-solution calorimetry as a function of strain, strain rate, initial grain size, and temperature of defornation. The energy expended in the deformation process was measured. Hardness was also measured and was correlated with the stored energy as a function of strain and strain rate. Mechanisms of energy storage are discussed. THE variables which determine the amount of energy stored in a metal during cold work are of two kinds: those involving the metal and its condition and those involving the process of deformation. For example, the stored energy differs between one metal and another and between different degrees of purity of a single metal. It also depends on the nature of the deformation process and particularly the extent, rate, and temperature of deformation. Most investigators have reported the stored energy as a function of strain (or some similar geometric parameter) or of the energy expended during deformation. In general the stored energy increases with strain, rapidly at first, but more slowly at large strains until a saturation level is reached. Reduce dust generated during bagging at minerals processing facilities, such as silica sand operations. Approach Installation of a new type of bag nozzle system eliminates the major dust sources during the bag filling process. How It Works The drawing illustrates components of the new bag nozzle system. The system differs in several ways from the conventional nozzle system. An improved bag clamp reduces the amount of blow-back during bag filling, because it has direct contact with approximately 80 per-cent of the nozzle. A two nozzle arrangement includes an inner or "fill" nozzle surrounded by another nozzle, which is designed to exhaust excess pressure from the bag after it has been filled. The exhaust is powered by an eductor, which uses a venturi effect to exhaust the bag at approximately 50 cfm. The exhaust exits into a bucket elevator and is recycled. A pinch valve automatically opens and closes the exhaust system to the bag.

Beach sands on the Morobe coast of New Guinea contain significant amounts of chromite. This chromite, together with the more abundant associated minerals such as olivine, enstatite, tremolite, antigorite and feldspar has been de- rived from rocks of the Papuan Ultramafic Belt and transported to the beaches by three rivers, the Paiawa, the Saia and the Sesimbai. Of the hundreds of samples taken, 26 have been analysed mineralogically and chemically in some detail. On this basis, five groups of samples, four on- shore and one offshore, representing character- istic mineral assemblages, have been recognized. The chromite grains themselves have been exam- ined to determine variations in amount and in the Cr/Fe ratio, since this is of economic importance. Much of the chromite fails to reach a high Cr/Fe ratio as a result of magnetite rims around chromite grains. The precious metal content of the sands is negligible.

A technique of seismic refraction data analysis has been developed in which a digital computer is used to generate a two-dimensional model representing a layered-earth depth interpretation. Travel times are picked on seismic records by the human interpreter. These times, together with shot point and geophone locations and refraction layer control information, are submitted to the computer on punched cards. A first approximation delineation of each refraction horizon is obtained by a computer adaptation of the delay-time method. The approximation is then tested and improved by the computer through the use of a ray-tracing procedure in which ray travel times computed for the model are compared against field-measured travel times. The model is subsequently adjusted in an iterative manner so as to minimize the discrepancy between computed and measured travel times. The Fortran program is listed in the appendix of the report together with instructions for preparing data cards and examples of results.
