The modelling work presented here concerns Ni-bearing steels produced by Imphy Ugine Précision. In such grades, the contents of elements such as silicon or titanium must be precisely controlled by slag/metal treatments. The slag phase is described by IRSID slag model that has been slightly revised in order to better fit recent SiO2activity measurements in the low SiO2content domain of the CaO-Al2O3-CaO system. The metallic alloys are described by the unified interaction parameter model (UIPM). The 64th Regular Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute convened at Jackson Lake Lodge, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, and was in session at 10:00 a.m. The meeting was called to order by Past President .Tames Westfield. He introduced Mr. Raymond C. Lillie, President of Grand Teton Lodge Company, who welcomed the members to Jackson Lake Lodge. Mr. Lillie stated he had been with the organization since the Lodge was built. They had a snowstorm the day before our meeting so stated it was perfect weather for coal miners. Mr. Westfield introduced President Joe T. Taylor, Superintendent, York Canyon Mine, Kaiser Steel Corporation, Raton, New Mexico. Mr. Taylor was born in Miami, Florida. Attended the Colorado School of Mines and graduated in 1952. He was associated with Sunnyside Operations of Kaiser Steel Corporation in Utah until 1962. Was then transferred to the Koehler Mine in Raton, New Mexico, as Superintendent, and had charge of opening the new mine, York Canyon, and at the present time is in charge of Kaiser operations there.

Vanadium is one of the materials being considered for use in fast-breeder nuclear reactors. It is a good heat conductor and nearly transparent to radiation, properties regarded as ideal for nuclear fuel containers. The problem has been the metal lacks ductility needed for forming. In our program at Reno Laboratory the effects of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (previous affiliation) the effects of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon have been reported21,22 nd most recently the effects of boron and boron with carbon.23 The continuing study by the Ames Laboratory of the effects of hydrogen, the most subtle and fugitive element in its relationship to structure and properties, is commendable. The solubility of oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen in vanadium (and other bcc metals as well) is related to material purity. With the available limit on metal purity and the interaction (clustering) of hydrogen with the other interstitial and substitutional elements present in their base metal, would the authors comment on the tolerance of hydrogen in relation to oxy- gen that will avoid intergranular fracture and above what content or how seriously harmful in oxygen at various carbon levels? Understanding the true effects of hydrogen (and other interstitial impurities) in vanadium depends on knowledge of the amount present under various conditions and its distribution between various possible positions. Significant amounts of hydrogen may be in "thermo-dynamic" solution, but not as individual atoms in interstitial positions. It may be in grain boundaries, in subgrain boundaries, in vacancies, or in dislocations. Some of the hydrogen may be paired or in complexes with impurities in substitutional solid solution in vanadium. This makes the analysis of the effect of hydrogen vastly more difficult. It should not be expected that hydrogen in grain boundaries will affect slip in the same manner as hydrogen in interstitial positions, nor will the complexes react to heat treatment the same way as hydrogen in dislocations. It is gratifying that the authors have quoted results from two of our inestiations,' but neglected one2' which applied the Petch theory to electrorefined vanadium of high purity and analyzed the effects of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon on the ai and ky values obtained by the extrapolation and grain size methods. Details can be found in the paper. Briefly, we obtained a ui value of 10,300 psi (t = 5150 psi) at 273°K. The metal also exhibited profuse twinning with high ductility at 123" and 77°K. Nitrogen was more effective than oxygen in increasing ui, the increase being about twice as much for the same impurity level. Carbon additions resulted in only minimal changes in Ui. The corresponding ky increased as oxygen and nitrogen increased, with nitrogen being more effective. Carbon additions resulted in little change. The initial rates of dissolution of pyrite, chalcosine, sphalerite and galena in acidic sulphate solutions under oxygen pressure were measured in the range of Poe = 0.2-1 MPa, 130-180 °C, [H2SO4]0 = 0.2-0.7 M, and in the presence of surface-active agents and agitation producing Re = 4-16 x 103. Reaction orders, activation energies, and values of reaction constants for these oxidation reactions were established. The reactions also were shown to be diffusion-controlled; and the rates demonstrate a linear dependence on the surface area of the sulphides. A surface reaction model, in which oxygen is transported through a solid layer of surface products, has been advanced. The initial stage of high-temperature interaction at pH <7 is suggested to involve a chemical activation of the sulphide surface and is described by the following general reaction: MenSm + H3O+ Men-1 Sm-1 (HS-)s + H2O The subsequent oxidation of surface complex HS- to S0 or SO2-4 occurs with the assistance of Fe(III), Cu(II) ions depending on temperature and the redox potential of the medium, which are defined by oxygen pressure and composition of the reaction mixture, especially concentrations of H2SO4 and metals with variable valence. General process kinetics are complicated due to the formation of by-products on the basis of Fe3+ Pb2+, Cup ions, which displace the kinetics into the diffusion region.

The Penetrating Cone Fracture (PCF) technology 1 is a new method of rock excavation developed by Sunburst Excavation, Inc. of Denver, Colorado. PCF is a rock excavation method which employs tensile breakage mechanisms under controlled conditions to enable the continuous excavation of rock?in underground and some surface applications. The technology has developed rapidly over the last two years to the point where it is now being prepared for commercial application in the mining and civil construction industries. The initial commercial application of PCF will be undertaken at the Perseverance Nickel Mine of Western Mining Corporation Limited in Western Australia beginning in May, 1994.

Many metalliferous ?provinces are co-extensive with particular groups of sedimentary, volcanic, or :basic plutonic rocks. Deposits may be truly syngenetic (Rand, Rhodesia-Katanga, Mans-field, Blind River, White Pine); re-. concentrated by circulating waters (Colorado Plateau, Red Bed Coppers) ; or re-concentrated thermally during metamorphism and granitization (most uranium and lead-zinc provinces ?and some copper and gold provinces). Basalts may yield important cop-per provinces when folded and re-heated. Granitization of basalts which have not reached the chlorite-carbon-ate phase of metamorphism may produce copper provinces. If they reach ?the chlorite-carbonate stage, granitization may result in a gold province. Copper and copper-nickel provinces may result if gabbros are granitized, and a ?similar alteration of per-idotite may result in asbestos or nickel ores. Many similar associations are known. Granite is not a source of ore, but a result of heat. A classification of ?ore with respect to source rocks is of greater prospecting value than are classifications based on magmatic differentiation and hydrother-mal solution theories. Volcanic centres are important ore foci because the thermally unstable metallic sulphides may be concentrated here by a distillation process. The ores found in the hot spring deposits, viz., mercury, mercury sulphide, sulphur, and the compounds of ?antimony and arsenic, are not those which are soluble in water at low temperature (epithermal sub-division of hydrothermal class), abrut those which are unstable thermally at comparatively low temperatures . Water is one of the most common thermally unstable minerals, and generally accompanies the thermally activated ore-forming sulphides.

Pile deviation generally can happen after installation of driven pile particularly in soft soil layers. In this case study, all 242 diameter 0.8 m spun piles were deviated from 20 to 820 mm. The large deviation was caused by lateral soil movement in the top very soft clay layer of thickness about 23 m. This very soft marine clay is very sensitive and anisotropic having high water contents of over 120% and low undrained shear strength of 5-10 kN/m2. The remedial works were carried out based on theory of load transfer and soil-structure interaction. All deviated piles were rectified and used as the foundation piles with strictly controlled pile load tests. The construction of a nine-storey building was successfully completed founded on the rectified piles and it has been opened for the service for over two years.

"Recent interest in the pipeline transport of solid mate-als has been sparked by the idea that, in an inflationary onomy, pipeline costs are more stable than the costs of any other transport systems. Pipelines have proved over 1e years to be dependable, records indicate that main-•nance and operating costs are comparatively low, and 1eir amenability to automation is of considerable im->rtance.The concept of hydraulic hoisting of solids from under-round, or cross-country hydraulic transportation of con-~ntrates and ores, is currently of prime interest to the ining industry. In general, this paper deals with a preliminary investi-ation of energy losses incurred while transporting a rela-vely heavy, crushed mine product, namely magnetite, oth vertically and horizontally. The basis and validity of everal equations derived by other experimenters to com-ute these losses is discussed. A theoretical analysis of ydraulic hoi:,,ting is made, and, based upon test results, calculation of horsepower requirements for hoisting an re under a given set of conditions is presented. Results indicate that:n vertical transport, the friction head losses are identical to those of clear water, and the total energy requirement for hydraulic hoisting then becomes a function of height of lift, concentration and specific gravity of the solids being hoisted. .-In horizontal transport, friction head losses can be calculated with reasonable accuracy using Bonning-ton's correlation curve. Losses computed utilizing Durand's correlation (K = 85) result in estimates which are too low by 10 to 30 per cent, an<l those calculated using Newitt's correlation (K = 1,100, K = 66) give friction loss values which are too high by 10 to 30 per cent . . -The theoretical horsepower (RMS-hp.) required for hoisting hydraulically is approximately half of that required for conventional double-drum skip hoisting."

Rouez is a recent discovery of a major low-grade sulfide body (± 100 m, 0,6 % Cu, 0.3 % Pb, 1 ,5 % Zn, 21 g/t Ag, 1.5 g/t Au) in a populated farming area of Brittany, France, some 30 kilometres northwest of Le Mans. The discovery is the result of an airborne electro- magnetic (INPUT) survey. It is the first time that the INPUT method has been used in France. The survey Gas successful in spite of the numerous interferences normally found in populated areas. The lack of a good drainage system would not allow the discovery of Rouez using stream sediment geochemistry alone. Ground geophysical surveys confirmed the airborne work and gave sufficient information to make the first hole a discovery hole. The deposit is Proterozoic in age and sediment-hosted. The metamorphism is low grade.

HISTORICAL SKETCH THE selective action of oils for lustrous minerals was first disclosed by Haynes in 1860. In 1885, Miss Carrie Everson elaborated this idea and also disclosed the fact that acid increased the. so-called selective action. Her patent called for oils, either animal, vegetable or mineral, also for an acid or salt. The process was tried out on a practical scale in Baker City and Leadville, in 1889, and failed: first, because,, as has since been shown, of the unsuitability of the ore to flotation; and second, because the invention was too far in advance of the times. Then followed the Elmore brothers, first with their bulk oil processes and later with their vacuum method. The basic principles of oil flotation were undoubtedly covered by the above inventors, the work done since their time being merely a building up on ground work laid by them. Different kinds of oil, different quantities of oil, and all the varying degrees of agitation, were all exemplified and practiced by them in one phase or another, and the developments that have since been made are but elaborations of the fundamental principles laid down by Haynes, Everson, and the Elmore brothers. In 1902, the Potter-Delprat process was developed in Australia. In this process no oil was used, the mineral being raised by the generation of gas, brought about by the introduction of acid into the pulp. The mineral particles appeared on the surface of the separatory vessel, in the form of a scum or froth, buoyed up-by minute gas bubbles attached to them. This no doubt first gave the suggestion of gaseous flotation. In 1902, also, Fromont, an Italian, was granted a patent in which. he combined violent agitation with oil and gaseous flotation, the gas being generated within the pulp, in much the same way as in the Potter-Delprat process.

One of the most common assumptions regarding the use of ANFO versus utilizing 100% sensitized emulsion is that ANFO “turns over” the muck-pile better, due to the “higher gas volume” supposedly inherent in ANFO. This paper examines this assumption and provides quantitative data for analysis. Total gas volume from each product was evaluated using Orica’s I.D.E.X. Code analysis. This analysis was used to determine if gas volume is a significant contributor to differences in fragmentation and movement between blasts utilizing the two different products. A constant drilling and blasting cost per yard for given cut depth, hole diameter, stemming height and rock type was utilized. The cost per yard was held constant by adjusting patterns considering product, accessory, and drilling costs. Photographic fragmentation analysis, dig rates measured quantitatively through production tracking and time studies and qualitative information about the diggability of the blast provided through video recordings were used to evaluate performance. The data collected during the study is presented and recommendations are made regarding the performance of ANFO and Emulsion holding other variables constant for a limited number of blasts.

"The fibers extracted from the stem of the banana plant are relatively stronger and have been used as reinforcement of polymer matrix composites. In addition to quasi-static mechanical properties, there is a need to characterize the dynamic behavior of banana fiber composites subjected to thermal and mechanical constraints. In this work, the temperature variation of the dynamicmechanical parameters of polyester composites incorporated with up 30% in volume of banana fibers were investigated by DMA tests. The storage and loss moduli as well as the tangent delta were measured from 20 to 200°C in a TA Instrument operated with the flexural mode at 1 Hz. The results showed that the incorporation of banana fibers tends to increase the viscoelastic stiffness of the polyester matrix. It was also observed changes in the T g and the structure dumping capacity of the composites with increasing fraction of banana fibers.IntroductionNatural fibers with high amount of cellulose, also known as lignocellulosic fibers, have been used from primeval times by our civilization. In the last century, synthetic fibers such as nylon, carbon, aramid and glass fibers gained interest owing to superior strength and precise dimensional control. Natural fibers were then replaced by synthetics in many fields such as textiles and appliances. In the past decades, however, environmental issues drawn, once again, the attention to lignocellulosic fibers as possible substitute for intensive energy-consuming and long term polluting synthetics, specially the glass fiber [1]. In particular, research works have disclosed the potential advantages associated with the use of lignocellulosic fibers as the reinforcing phase in polymer composites [2-7]. Among the advantages it is worth mentioning the renewability, recyclability, biodegradability and the fact that natural fibers are neutral with respect to C02 emissions responsible for global warming. Moreover, as compared to synthetics, lignocellulosic fibers present lower density and cost as well as reduced wear caused to the processing equipment. On the other hand, in terms of composite reinforcement, hydrophilic lignocellulosic fibers present drawbacks such as weak adhesion to hydrophobic polymeric matrices in addition to dimensional limitations and non-uniform properties."

Acidic waters typified by acid mine drainage, copper dump leach solutions and steel pickle liquors will typically contain SO4-2 and cations such as Fe+3, AI+3 and for the pickle liquors, sometimes Cr+3. These acidic waters will often react with limestone, present naturally or introduced for purposes of solution neutralization, to form reaction - inhibiting coatings of gypsum and gelatinous, metal hydroxide precipi¬tates. The coating thickness, as a function of pH, was quantified for both reactive (calcite, limestone) and non-reactive (quartz, barite, fluorite) minerals, and the data were related to the hydroxy species diagrams and to solution turbidity measurements. Coatings were found on the reactive minerals at a lower bulk solution pH than on the non-reactive minerals.

Oaky North is AustraliaÆs highest producing underground coal mine. In 2011, the mine produced 8.7 Mt of high-quality coking coal. The high quantities are a result of the constant strive for optimising the operating time of major production units, which involves investing numerous resources, including diesel equipment, in supporting and maintaining their operation.In July 2011 it was identified that the diesel particulate matter (DPM) levels in the underground workings were above acceptable levels, due to the high level of diesel activity. Over the next 12 months, several controls were implemented to reduce exposure to personnel: the main ventilation system was upgraded; the production forecast was adjusted to better manage the diesel fleet, removing surges in diesel usage; and an electronic diesel tag board was introduced to centrally manage the distribution of diesel usage around the mine.From the start of the campaign in emission reduction, an intense DPM monitoring regime was established. Within a few months of the introduction of the centralised tag board, there was a major reduction in emission levels. After the installation and commissioning of the new main fans, the emission levels dropped further, such that over-exposures are now a rarity.Oaky North continues to explore new systems to better utilise their diesel fleet while still maintaining control over DPM emissions.CITATION:Melloy, A, Holt, D and Jurak, M, 2013. ON FEBRUARY 13, 1953 the Miami Copper Company signed a contract with the United States Government, through the Defense Materials Procurement Agency, whereby it under- took, with a base price of 27.359 per lb (subject to escalation based on wage scales and wholesale-price indices), to exploit a new ore body in its mine in Gila County, Arizona. Recoverable ore was estimated at 23,000,000 tons, averaging about 0.677 per cent copper. Moreover, the proportion of oxidized copper, difficult to recover by flotation concentrating, was so high that an average net recovery of only ten pounds per ton (0.5 per cent) was expected. The company proposed to mine the ore by the underground method known as undercut block-caving. Unfortunately the ore body, as has been true of all Miami&apos;s ore bodies, lay so deeply buried that no possibility existed of adopting opencut mining as has been done in recent years at Miami&apos;s neighbors, Ray and Inspiration. Probably the most distinctive characteristic of Miami&apos;s operations has been the extent to which it has developed and improved methods and equipment for underground mining. True, necessity was a potent stimulant, because its available ores since 1926 have been exceptionally low-grade; so, if the enterprise were to survive, it was necessary to keep costs at the minimum. This fact does not detract, however, in any way from the remarkable achievements of Miami engineers in conducting efficient and low-cost underground mining.

A characterization of mechanical properties of fire refined copper has been done in order to link ductility with oxygen content. The results show four different copper mechanical behaviours as temperature increases, where the oxygen con- tent, as Cu20 segregated, has a deleterious effect on ductility. It is concluded that until 500 ppm oxygen content, the fire refined copper could be rolled without remelting for deoxidation. Also a subsequent cold rolling could be done without intermediate annealing.

"Over recent years a number of techniques have been developed as part of the AMIRA1 P9 project to represent mathematically or measure directly sub-processes occurring in flotation cells. These include the determination of:•,?a machine parameter (bubble surface area flux, Sb);•,?a froth parameter (froth recovery, Rf );•,?entrainment and drainage parameters (???and d); and•,?an ore floatability parameter (Pi).These flotation parameters allow the plant engineer to develop a model of the flotation circuit that can be used as a powerful tool to diagnose the performance of that circuit. The recently developed JKSimFloat V6 flotation simulator uses these parameters to predict the flotation circuit performance that would arise from changes in operating conditions and circuit configuration.This new flotation technology was applied to the Placer Kanowna Belle Gold Mine in Western Australia. A series of plant surveys, cell characterisation measurements and laboratory batch tests were conducted to determine the flotation circuit model parameters to be used within the JKSimFloat V6 simulatorA thorough flotation circuit analysis was then performed at Kanowna Belle using JKSimFloat V6. The recommendations that were provided by this circuit analysis have resulted in large improvements in the flotation performance at Kanowna Belle. These include a 1.3% increase in flotation gold recovery and a substantial decrease in operating costs. The analysis is still ongoing, however, the benefits already obtained from applying this technology have resulted in a US$1.3 million a year improvement to the mine."

Fractional replication of factorial design, a general method for planning experimentation and for analysis of data obtained, is described as applied to a flotation investigation. This method leads to determination of optimum process conditions with minimum experimental effort. Its advantages over simple factorial design are demonstrated. A METHOD for planning experimentation and for analyzing the data secured will be demonstrated. This method, termed fractional replication of factorial design, employs a relatively small number of individual experiments to determine which of a large number of process variables are controlling, to determine which combination of levels of these variables is most likely to produce optimum results, and also to predict what results will be obtained with a particular combination of conditions not already tested. Although the general method is not new, having been developed by Finney in 1945,&apos; the extent to which it can improve the effectiveness of applied research generally has not been recognized by metallurgists. The fractional replication procedure is particularly useful in flotation experimentation and an example from such an investigation will be used in the paper. However, it has equal value in any investigation in which similar experimental difficulties are encountered. In developing a flotation process for a particular mineral separation, the investigator is inevitably confronted with the following difficulties: 1—There are a large number of potentially important process variables. 2—Results of individual experiments are not highly reproducible, due in part to the difficulty in precisely controlling all the variables. 3—Considerable effort is expended in conducting individual experiments. 4—There are practical limits on the number of individual experiments which can be made. In situations of just such a type, modern statistical methods of planning experimentation and analyzing data have their greatest value. Applications of one such technique, called factorial design, to problems of this type have been described by Dorenfeld and others.&apos;-&apos; The simple factorial design is an efficient procedure when the investigator hopes to provide a comprehensive understanding of the effects and interrelationships of a small number of variables over a limited range. In applied research, this is seldom the main objective. Rather, the investigator usually wishes to determine which of the many potentially important variables are in fact controlling, which levels of the controlling variables will provide opti- mum metallurgical results, and what these results will be at optimum conditions. Interest in detailed trends is limited to the controlling variables and to levels in the region of optimum conditions. Simple factorial design has serious deficiencies for such objectives and is not the most efficient method of experimental design. Deficiencies of Factorial Design In a simple factorial design, an experiment must be made at every possible combination of each level of every variable, once these have been chosen and the levels of each to be included have been decided upon. As the number of variables or levels of each increases, the experimental program quickly reaches prohibitive size. For example, an investigation of only four variables, each at four levels, requires 256 individual experiments. Often upon completion of such an extensive program, it is found that one or more of the variables has metallurgically unimportant effects or that a poor estimate has been made as to the appropriate range of levels to be investigated. The result is that only a small proportion of the data obtained falls in the range of real metallurgical interest. Indeed, it frequently can be anticipated that certain combinations of levels of variables will not produce results of interest, but they still must be included so that the essential balance, or orthogonality, of the design will be retained. It may be true that factorial design will provide the greatest amount of information from a given number of experiments, but it does not necessarily follow that it will lead to the desired information with a minimum number of experiments. Much of the information provided may be of little value. Advantages of Fractional Replication The disadvantages of simple factorial design are overcome to a great extent by a modification known as fractional replication. This is a technique for sampling systematically the potential data of a full factorial experiment, that is, the data which would have been obtained if the complete factorially designed program had been completed. Only a fraction of the total array of experiments is made, but the experiments are chosen in such a way that the important advantages of factorial design and the accompanying analysis of variance are retained. The data obtained from the first group of experiments are used to determine which of several variables are controlling and which levels of these variables are most likely to produce the desired result. The BHP Minerals&apos; Cannington silver-lead-zinc deposit is located approximately 190 km south-east of Mount Isa. The deposit, is hosted by Proterozoic rocks beneath a thin cover of younger sediments, and contains a total estimated resource of 45.3 million tonnes at 11.1 per cent lead, 4.4 per cent zinc and 500 g/t silver. The deposit is separated by faulting to form a shallow, lower grade Northern Zone and a deeper, higher grade Southern Zone (Roche, 1994). Contract development of an exploration decline to test mineralisation in the Southern Zone commenced with the excavation of a boxcut in August 1993. The complex variably deformed Proterozoic sequence interpreted from drill core and intersected in the exploration decline has required a high level of practical rock mechanics input to achieve: ò appropriate support designs, ò a high quality of installation, and ò required development advance schedules. The Norwegian Tunnelling Index (Q System) in conjunction with regular face mapping is used as an operating tool to assist in decision making for ground support. Line mapping, discontinuity analysis and wedge assessments are conducted routinely to optimise ground support requirements in the decline, intersections and all other underground excavations.
