Recently, there has been much debate as to the relevance of reporting financial results using the conventional accounting systems, which is based on historical costs, during a period of rapid inflation. In the following paragraphs , the symptoms, if not the causes, of inflation, its detrimental effect on the financial soundness of business in general and the financial reporting changes being advocated to overcome perceived weaknesses in the present financial reporting system in accounting for the effects of inflation will be reviewed. Finally, a course of action as a sound approach to the financial reporting problem will be recommended.

The basic concept of auger mining is to extract coal beyond the economic limits of surface mining technology by drilling holes of an appropriate diameter size into the exposed seam of the highwall as deep as is technically, economically and operationally feasible. This method of mining is used at the final highwall of typical surface mining operations. This paper describes the auger mining systems and discusses the methods to increase the coal recovery in auger mining from a field trial in Australia.

The Hladysz Rock Tester was developed at the South Dakota School of Mines as a portable rock strength tester. The hand held device is placed against a rock surface and struck by a hammer. The impacted force causes a steel ball in the device nose piece to indent the rock and simultaneously indent a standard steel bar also contained in the nose piece. By comparing the two indented diameters the compressive strength of the rock can be calculated using laboratory determined correlation coefficients.

In August, 1975, North Broken Hill Limited announced that an intersection of 37.3 m of high grade lead-silver-zinc mineralisation, assaying 26.2 per cent Pb, 495 g/tonne Ag and 21.2 per cent Zn had been obtained at its Mine at Broken Hill, 520 m north-east of its No. 3 Shaft and slightly below the No. 36 level (1581 m). Subsequent drilling confirmed the presence of the extension of the Broken Hill Orebody on the north-western side of the Globe Vauxhall Retrograde Shear Zone and defined 1.8 million tonnes of high grade mineralisation. The area containing this mineralisation was subsequently named the Fitzpatrick Area in tribute to the late Mr. W.E. Fitzpatrick a former Member of the the Board and Manager of the Ccnpany's Broken Hill operations. This paper describes in brief the exploration programme leading up to the discovery, the general geology of the area and the proposed future exploration progranme for further extensions of the orebody within the mining leases of North Broken Hill Limited.

The primary purpose of the Prototype Installation Facility (PIF) for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) in this conceptual design was to test the magnets and other physics equipment. PIF was located in the northwest quadrant of the SSC 54 mile (87 km) main ring and consists of the first segment of tunnels, approximately 17,060 lineal feet (5.2 km) of 12 foot inner-diameter (ID) (3.7 m) tunnel, three 250 ± foot (60 m) deep shafts, connecting tunnels, and associated niches and alcoves. PIF would be the first portion of the main ring collider tunnel to be constructed. The geology, underground excavation conditions, underground facilities, and contractual considerations are discussed.

Very recently there has been a quickening of research effort in the field of silicate mineral flotation, particularly as regards the flotation of beryl.' These studies have already contributed much to the understanding of both anionic and cat-ionic flotation of silicates. Of particular interest concerning anionic flotation has been the work done on heavy metal activation of silicates by M. C. Fuerstenau and co-workers.4,7 In addition. in the paper by Fuerstenau, Rice, Somasundaran and Fuerstenau7 attention was paid to low pH anionic flotation of beryl in the absence of activators. Pacific Coal Pty Limited (a wholly owned subsidiary of CRA Limited) managed the interests of six members of a joint venture formed to mine and export eight million tonnes of export quality steaming coal from a mine developed at Blair Athol in the Bowen Basin of the Central Queensland coal fields. The mine is now operated by Blair Athol Coal Pty Ltd. Crooks Michell Peacock Stewart Pty Limited (CMPS) was awarded a project management and engineering contract for the total mine portion. Following a feasibility study, CMPS carried out an Optimisation Study which produced changes to the design of the project, thus resulting in the project budget being reduced by some A$13 million. In spite of a number of late additions to the scope of work, the project was completed at a final cost of A$148 million, many millions below the reduced project budget. The project was also completed several months ahead of schedule. Total services were provided to take the project from feasibility stage through to the establishment of an operational facility and included project management, planning and control, accounting and financial control, as well as the organisation of engineering, procurement, construction, industrial plant commissioning, and technical training matters.

"This research determines shear strength and stiffness properties of bedding planes and joints in the roof strata rocks within 7.5 to 9 m (25-30 ft.) overlying the Illinois #6 coal seam (within the pressure arch zone). A shear test loading device was designed into a 1.334 kN (150 t) Forney Compression Loading Machine to perform direct shear tests in accordance with ASTM D5607-08 “Standard Test Method for Performing Laboratory Direct Shear Strength Tests of Rock Specimens under Constant Normal Force”. The data were used to determine peak and residual friction angles and the dilation angle. A total of 49 bedding plane samples were tested, out of which 46 (36 intact and 10 relatively weak and loose) samples passed QA/QC procedures in accordance to ASTM D5607. Samples from eight (8) different bedding planes- shale/limestone (SL), shale/sandstone (SSs), shale/bone (SB), laminated sandstone (LS), shale/shale (SS), bone/bone (BB), bone/limestone (BL), and limestone/limestone (LL) were tested. The number of samples tested for each bedding plane were: SL- 11, SSs- 8, SB- 5, BB- 4, LS- 6, SS- 9, BL- 1, and LL- 2. Peak and residual shear strength values at 2.75 MPa normal stress range 1.06 – 6.26 MPa and 0.82 MPa to 0.82 – 4.14 MPa, respectively. The average normal and shear stiffness values are about 11.98 GPa/m and 3.11 GPa/m. Dilation angles are low (<10?) and negative in some cases. Angle of sliding friction values range from 9? to 42?. Joint Roughness Coefficient (JRC) values were less than 10.INTRODUCTIONRock mass may be defined as the total in situ rock medium containing bedding planes, faults, joints, folds and other structural features. Therefore, it is discontinuous and may have heterogeneous and anisotropic engineering properties. Upon creation of an excavation in a rock mass, bedding planes and joints are the most likely points of failure initiation. The failure typically occurs either in tensile or shear mode. Upon failure initiation stresses are transferred to the neighboring rock mass and the failure progresses until stability is achieved through equilibrium of stresses and strength. An example of this mechanism is development of the pressure arch. This study determined the shear strength and stiffness properties in shear and compression of bedding planes and joints in the immediate roof strata rocks within 7.5-9 m ( 25-30 ft.) overlying the Illinois No. 6 coal seam (within the pressure arch zone). Since such data are currently not available for Illinois Coal Basin mines, researchers and engineers have been using estimated values for design purposes. The immediate roof lithology in the proposed mining area consists of shale 0.62 m; Bone 0.09 m (0.3 ft.); Limestone, 0.10 m (0.33 ft.); Shale 2.37 m (7.9 ft.); and sandstone 0.55 m (1.83 ft.). The bedding plane samples were provided by a mine in south-eastern Illinois operating at a depth of about 180 m (600 ft.)."

Light metals have great potential for application in the automotive and aerospace industries because of their excellent physical properties. The usage of aluminium, titanium and magnesium is limited by relatively high costs of production, associated energy costs and large ecological footprint. In the case of aluminium, significant improvement to the Hall-HTroult process is still achievable through advances in cell design, materials and process control. Alternative production processes, including carbothermic reduction and low temperature routes are also possible. Magnesium and titanium production are currently dominated by batch metallothermic processes and new process routes are required to develop these industries. Research at CSIRO, through the Light Metals Flagship, is currently focused on step change improvements in the production of light metals, aimed at lowering energy usage, increasing productivity and reducing the overall environmental impact. In this paper, the overall status of the existing technologies will be described, highlighting areas that are being developed around the world and at CSIRO.

"Ore is the economic portion of a mineral deposit that can be extracted economically. Hence an ore type is a classification of the ore based on one or more dominant characteristics in order to enable communication between unit operations and/or technical disciplines.In project evaluation, ore types are often defined early based on geological observations by geologists and initial metallurgical testing is based around this classification even though a number of processing options can be under evaluation. However, the geological drivers of performance for each of these processes can be very different and the ore type classification for one process may not be relevant for another. In operations an ore type, as either defined in the project evaluation phase or those that evolve with additional knowledge, is unlikely to provide the knowledge required across all the unit operations. The ore type has a meaning to someone but does not necessarily for all unit operations across the value chain.Geometallurgical or orebody knowledge has evolved through the consideration of multiple processes within the value chain, the improved understanding of variability of process performance within ore types and the effect on the complexity of the mineral extraction processes. Furthermore orebody knowledge has been moving from personal based knowledge and understanding to a more process oriented approach where measurement and spatial and process performance modelling is playing a greater role. Advances in mine planning and scheduling allow for both detailed analysis of the block model and the expected extraction processing attributes across various time scales. This capability of analysing and describing the complexity still requires to be communicated to the various unit operations, which may be beyond the traditional classification of an ore type.The limitations of an ore type and potential alternatives to enable the relevant information to be communicated to the relevant groups are outlined through a number of case examples across the value chain.CITATION:Jackson, J and Young, M F, 2016. To concentrate coarse mica particles using a dry beneficiation technique. Approach Concentrate coarse, II berated mica particles using a Bureau-designed system of crushers, screens, and a two-stage zigzag air classifier. How It Works Because mica has a flat plate-like crystalline structure, mica particles are significantly lighter than blocky gangue particles of the same size fraction. Thus an air classification technique can separate the flat, light mica particles from the heavier gangue particles. The ore, which Is first run through a standard jaw crusher, a roll crusher, and a hammer mill to liberate the mica, enters the rougher Zig-zag section through a rotating air lock. See photograph and diagram of a 2-stage air classifier. Airflow through the classifier can be varied according to the size of the particles being separated. The gangue material falls through the airstream of the rougher zigzag section and is discarded as tailings. The mica flakes are carried by the air-stream to the cyclone shown on the right side of the diagram, where they are collected. This rougher mica concentrate is fed to the cleaner zigzag section through another rotating air lock. The mica particles are again carried by the airstream but they are now collected In the cyclone on the left side. The cleaner concentrate leaves the left-side cyclone through a third rotating air lock and is rescreened to remove under-size material missed by the first screening. The final product of this pneumatic process is generally a high-grade mica concentrate. A generalized flow diagram for the pneumatic concentration method Is shown In the second diagram.

A oxidação da superfície de peças, ferramentas, moldes ou matrizes construídas em ligas ferrosas tem larga utilização na indústria. As aplicações podem ser as mais diversas, tais como simplesmente atender às questões estéticas, proteção da superfície contra a corrosão, ou proteção contra a interação química com outros metais. Dentre as técnicas industriais utilizadas há o processo conhecido como “Oxidação Negra” que é realizado em baixas temperaturas, com imersão do aço da peça em óleo quente, ou banho de sal especial, ou mesmo a frio (soluções especiais). Outros processos utilizam fornos industriais com atmosfera de ar para aquecer a liga ferrosa até temperaturas da ordem de 500ºC e acrescentar (“pingar”) água como fonte de oxigênio. E em outros, aplicação ceras hidrocarbonetadas e ácidos inorgânicos e posterior oxidação [1] com aquecimento a temperaturas da ordem de 500ºC. Nesses processos, o objetivo é formar uma camada de óxidos tipos Magnetita e Hematita cujas características de menor coeficiente de atrito e determinadas propriedades físicas e químicas serviriam de barreira à interação química com outros metais em contato. A camada de óxido obtida nas condições descritas acima é bastante útil para determinadas aplicações industriais, tais como moldes de injeção de alumínio. Esse texto descreve o processo de oxidação desenvolvido utilizando a tecnologia de plasma.

The National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), Marine Geology and Geophysics Division and co-located World Data Center-A for MGG archives and distributes global marine sediment data from U.S. and international sources. NGDC is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service. NGDC offers a variety of digital marine sediment data sets including sediment descriptions, textural analyses, geochemistry, paleontology, paleomagnetism, and well logs. Some data sets are compiled by outside sources and sent to NGDC for distribution; many are received under exchange agreements and through the World Data Center system. Other data sets are compiled at NGDC, frequently in cooperation with other government agencies or academic institutions. One of the best examples of the latter is the Index to Marine Geological Samples, or "Core Curators&apos; Database".

The Bureau of Mines established geologic factors affecting the mining of the Lower Kittanning coalbed to aid in coalbed minability studies and examined the occurrence of "wants" (places where coal is missing) and types of unstable roof rock strata. Trends established from mapping, including prediction of areas of high methane emissions, were extrapolated to unmined areas. &apos;Wants&apos; in the coalbed are of two types: Erosional and depositional. Erosional features occur where north-south-trending sand-filled channels cut into the coalbed. Variations in depositional environments have caused the coalbed to "split" into several thinner units. Slickensides, commonly indicative of unstable roof, are adjacent to and on the underside of sandstone channels; they were caused by differential compaction and by soft sediment sliding along the contact between the sandstone and adjacent shale. The frequency of unstable roof also increases where the interval between the Middle and Lower Kittanning coalbed is less than 30 feet. The zones of weakness at the contacts above and below the Middle Kittanning coalbed are the controlling factors for unstable roof in these strata. Methane emissions from the coalbed are controlled primarily by depth, fracture permeability, and rank of coal. Local geologic factors are coalbed thickness, associated rock strata, structure, and proximity to outcrop.

The wide distribution of limestone and dolomite and the decentralization of the depedent industries give the State Geological Survey a major role in the, development of these mineral resources. The amount of geological information necessary for efficient exploration is so large that few companies can afford to do the necessary basic field work or store the data. The state surveys fill these responsibilities and thus might be said to serve as the geological research departments of the limestone and dolomite industry. At the Indiana Geological Survey, the data of most value to limestone producers are in the form of unpublished measured sections, well records, cores, chemical analyses, directories, and geologic maps. Much of this information is published in summary form. The Survey also assists individual members of industry in exploration and evaluation of mineral deposits. In addition, a progressive State Survey provides the geological infor¬mation necessary for the development of new resources which do not appear to justify industry&apos;s own preliminary efforts.

Recently, the health of the cement industry has been threatened by the impact of environmental regulations, over-zealous state and federal agencies and radical environmental groups. Unfortunately, cement plant operations tend to trigger every environmental regulation and program promulgated, plus several programs designed specifically for the cement industry. These environmental burdens come at a time when the cement marketplace has been impacted by imports resulting in a situation where it has been difficult to increase prices to offset these increased environmental liabilities. The competitive world market forces the cement industry to seek creative ways to reduce costs. With additional major environmental programs coming down the pipe, like the Federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1980 and EPA regulation of cement kiln dust, the cement industry has attempted to try innovative supplements to cement manufacturing. The cement industry has found that using waste tires, biosolids and other solid wastes in the cement manufacturing process can reduce costs and plant emissions.

The a-p type alloys are subject to a loss of tensile ductility with increasing hydrogen content. No hydride phase is visible in embrittled a-B type alloys. The embrittlement encountered appeared to be of the strain-aging type. Both compositional and structural factors are shown to influence the hydrogen tolerance of a-B type alloys. IN previous papers by the authors, the effects of hydrogen on the structure and mechanical properties of high-purity and commercial-purity titanium were described. It was shown that the presence of hydrogen in these materials results in a hydride phase having low solubility at room temperature. This insoluble phase had little effect on the room temperature tensile properties, but did decrease the notch-bar toughness to a large degree. The binary Ti-H systemz indicates that hydrogen is much more soluble in £ than in a-titanium. Hence, it is not expected that the embrittling effects of hydrogen in a-fi alloys will be similar to that found in a alloys. Materials of this type studied in the present investigation included two commercial a-/3 alloys, Ti-8Mn and Ti-4A1-4Mn; three high-purity Ti-Mn alloys containing 3, 6, and 9 pct Mn; and four high-purity Ti-Mo alloys, Ti-SMo, Ti-10.9M0, Ti-13.1 M0, and Ti-20M0, of the a-B and B types. Materials and Fabrication—The high-purity base alloys, composed of iodide titanium and high-purity metals, were prepared by double arc melting under argon in a water-cooled copper crucible, using a water-cooled tungsten electrode. Radiographic examination showed homogeneous Ti-Mo alloys. The analyses of the alloys used in this investigation and their as-fabricated hydrogen content, where determined, are listed in Table I. The two commercial alloys were 1/2 and % in. diam bar stock. No analyses other than hydrogen content were made. In order to maintain the a-B relationship existing in the two commercial alloys, vacuum annealing and hydrogenation were carried out in the B field prior to final fabrication. Fabrication then was done by The three high-purity Ti-Mn alloys were forged to 3/4 in. diam rods at 1600°F, and hot swaged to 1/2 in. diam at 1380°F. Machined and degreased bar stock was vacuum annealed or hydrogenated, fabricated to 1/8 in. diam rod by hot swaging, annealed in argon for 1 hr at 1380°F !75O°C), and water quenched. The six yz lb Ti-Mo ingots were forged to Wi in. diam rods at 1600°F and then hot swaged to % in. diam. Machined and degreased specimens were vacuum annealed or hydrogenated in the /3 field, prior to fabrication, by swaging to Y4 in. rod at 1400°F. After fabrication, the 5 and 10.9 pct Mo alloys were annealed in argon for 16 hr at 1290°F and water quenched to give equiaxed a-B structures. The higher molybdenum content alloys were argon annealed 4 hr at 1470°F and water quenched to give all £ structures.

Average production from longwall mining operations in the United States has risen from approximately 800 tons per shift in 1980 to over 4,600 metric tons per shift in 1999. Such a large increase in production has the potential to generate significantly more dust. Previous NIOSH research has shown that, on average, respirable dust levels generated by the shearer accounts for 50% of the airborne dust generated during longwall mining. Ventilating air and water are primary controls being used in an effort to reduce longwall dust levels. Longwall operators are applying more air and water than ever before and have expressed concern over reaching maximum practical limits for these controls. Full-scale laboratory tests are being conducted to evaluate the impact on shearer-generated dust levels for changes in face air velocity, water quantity at the shearer, water spray pressure, spray system design, mining height and cutting direction. Results of this research should identify the most appropriate control levels for various operating conditions.
