A rockbolted roadway risk assessment procedure has been developed specifically for the Parkgate seam at Thoresby Colliery by Rock Mechanics Technology and colliery engineers. The purpose of this assessment is to identify any areas of significant risk in relation to roof instability due to potential failure or overloading of the rockbolt support system. This allows appropriate additional support to be installed in sections of roadway considered to be at increased risk. The assessment of risk in rockbolted coal mine roadways, in terms of fall of material, has to be based on an understanding of the rock mass behaviour at that site. The development of an appropriate risk assessment system is therefore site specific. A consistent approach to developing such a system can, however, be applied by adopting the same general logic to each individual site. The use of risk assessment to categorise areas with increased risk of roof instability has been undertaken for four longwall panels at Thoresby. The procedures used for these assessments are discussed and the operational benefits examined. The approach successfully used at Thoresby has been developed into a routine tool to assist mine personnel in assessing areas of potential roof instability in rockbolted roadways and as a means of communicating the position of these areas to both supervisors and workmen. The system provides a rational and objective interpretation of the current underground conditions based upon a logical, consistent and structured approach.

A considerable quantity of experimental hydrocarbon K-factor data has been correlated as a function of component identity, temperature, pressure and convergence pressure. To utilize these correlations effectively, convergence pressure must be determined accurately, particularly for volatile mixtures near their critical states. This paper presents phase diagrams that illustrate physically the meaning of convergence pressure. A new method, referred to hereafter as the "critical composition method", will be outlined for calculating convergence pressure. An example calculation has been included to illustrate how to use this new technique. INTRODUCTION The principle of hydrocarbon phase composition calculations as applied to such diverse problems as optimizing separator performance or predicting fluid compositions at various stages of reservoir depletion is the same. Usually, temperature, pressure and the numbers of moles of the various components of the fluid contained in a given volume are known. Questions answered by the phase calculation are what fraction of the total mass of fluid exists in each of the equilibrium phases, and what are the mole fractions of the various components in the two phases? To answer these questions the Natural Gasoline Supplymen's Assoc. (NGSMA) has correlated a considerable quantity of K-factor data as a function of temperature, pressure, component identity and convergence pressure.l To use these correlations to obtain the best answers possible, one must be able to calculate the convergence pressure. This is particularly true for over-all fluid compositions in the neighborhood of the critical state. STATEMENT OF THEORY Use of convergence pressure as a correlating parameter is based on a postulate similar to the law of corresponding states used in correlating PVT data of hydrocarbon gases. This postulate, which proposes convergence pressure as a correlating parameter, has been stated as follows: "The equilibrium vaporization constant for one component in a complex system is the same as the equilibrium constant at the same temperature and pressure for the same number or kind of components, providing only that the convergence pressures of the two systems are exactly the same at the same temperature and that the components are of the same homologous series".2 This law, as with all laws of physics, cannot be proven theoretically. It can only be justified by experimental data supporting its premises. Arguments have been made that this law violates Gibb's phase rule. For example, consider a four-component system. By Gibb's phase rule, which is thermodynamically rigorous, f = c — P + 2 =4, for a four-component, two-phase system. Thus, four independent intensive variables must be specified to establish completely all the intensive variables of the equilibrium phases. On the other hand, according to convergence pressure theory, only three variables need be specified for any mixture containing four different components. These variables are temperature, pressure and convergence pressure. Thus, the two laws appear to be in conflict. However, the convergence pressure postulate is more restrictive than Gibb's phase rule. It applies only to mixtures of the same homologous series. Hence, these two concepts are not in disagreement. The South Deep surface shaft system is being sunk to a final depth of 2750 in below surface and on completion will be the deepest single drop haft in the world. The shafts will intersect the target reef horizon at 2650 to below surface. In order to negate the requirement for a shaft pillar, which would he extremely large at this depth, the reef horizon in the vicinity of the intersection is currently being mined. A high quality crushed waste/classified tailings backfill is being placed in the longwall stoping panels around the shaft intersection area. This kill limit closure and ride which following shaft reef intersection could have a detrimental effect on the long term shaft stability. This paper discusses underground instrumentation results and numerical modelling exercises carried out to confirm that the shaft system will he stable throughout the life of the mine. Instrumentation projects include closure and ride measured between backfill paddocks and haulage leveling exercises carried out to determine the far field rockmass response to mining with stiff backfill.

Because ammonia can form complex ions with certain of the transition metals, such as copper and nickel, it has long been of interest to extractive metallurgists interested in leaching or separating these metals. Although it is a relatively expensive reagent, ammonia is amenable to recycle because of its volatility. In development of processes utilizing ammoniacal leaching or separation schemes, information regarding solution vapor pressures, pH and solubility limitations is needed. There is voluminous literature on ammonia-water systems generated by the urea industry. However, frequently the systems of interest to metallurgists differ significantly in concentrations of ammonia used, the temperatures of interest. Furthermore, the differences arising from the presence of metal values in solution must be comprehended. There is surprisingly little information readily available regarding systems of practical interest to metallurgy. As a result, those interested in ammonia-based processes end up either doing expensive laboratory research to obtain necessary data or overdesigning the process. Another approach to obtaining desired information about ammoniacal systems is to attempt to calculate from first principles the various solution properties. This paper is being presented to illustrate what can be accomplished by estimating the state of equilibrium in an ammoniacal carbonate system from available thermodynamic information making simplifying assumptions when needed.

In 2003, NEWMONT MINING CORPORATION, the worldÆs largest gold producer, set out to prove that High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) technology is sufficiently robust and reliable to be considered for the treatment of hard rock gold ores. In collaboration with POLYSIUS, a significant trial was conducted and 127 600 tonnes processed, successfully proving the HPGR capabilities on the Lone Tree Mine, Nevada ore û one of the most competent and abrasive ores in the industry. The success has led a number of mining companies to consider HPGRs for the comminution of gold and copper ores.

Moranbah North is a modern longwall operation mining premium coking coal in the Northern Bowen Basin, Central Queensland. Australia Moranbah North Coal (MNC) is owned and operated by Anglo Coal Australia. Extracting approximately 4.5m of the Goonyella Middle seam using a single longwall, the mine produces 5 to 6 Mt per annum. The weak coal (4.5 MPa), low strength laminated immediate roof, and strong upper roof sandstones, make operation of the longwall at depths in excess of 250m geotechnically challenging. In the past, there have been a number of production delays due to geotechnical issues. Roof instability resulted in a long stoppage on Longwall 105, and the eventual relocation of the face further outbye in the block. (Figure 1). When mining commenced in LW106, there was a requirement for uninterrupted production, particularly in the more demanding inbye area of the panel. Following discussions with a number of Geotechnical experts, it was decided to narrow the face, and test the theories of reduced face weighting due to spanning of the goaf across the panel. A new on line chock monitoring system, and microseismic monitoring was installed in order to characterise the difference in the rockmass response, as the panel width changed from 175m, to 265m, and then 300m. The nature of the goaf formation and impacts on face loading and production are discussed, having the unique opportunity of three different face widths within the same area.

THERE has been interest recently in the conditions under which dislocation pipe diffusion may be observed. In order to extend the measurements to temperatures below Tm/2, where pipe diffusion becomes more important, a chemical sectioning technique was developed for silver single crystals which makes possible the removal of layers of 100A or less. The procedure is briefly as follows. Silver single crystals of 99.995 pct purity were cut in the form of discs t by 4 in., electropolished, and electropolated with Ag110 to about 1000A thickness. The thickness was determined by calibrating the activity with the weight of heavier platings, up to 10,000A. Both diffused and undiffused samples were sectioned in a two-step process. Reaction with a solution of iodine in alcohol formed a thin, even layer of AgI, which was then dissolved in a KCN solution. The reaction rate of the iodine solution varied slightly over a period of time, so that the thickness of the stripped layers, while quite even and regular for a given specimen, ranged from 65 to l00W for different specimens. This variation was checked by using a thickly plated standard with each run. Layer thickness was determined from undiffused samples by the point where the layer activity drops to half the maximum. This maximum intensity also provides, with appropriate corrections, the initial concentration per layer co. Because of the small penetration distances, it is necessary to use the exact solution of Fick's law for a source of finite thickness.' For a plating of thick- where c is the concentration at depth x. flj the error function, D the apparent diffusion coefficient, and t the time. The diffusion coefficient was obtained from the concentration-penetration data by extrapolating to x = 0 where c/co = erf h/2(Dt)1/2 Enough points were taken to impart confidence in the accuracy of the intersection, generally about ten layers. Four temperatures were used as in Table I. For best accuracy, t and h were chosen to give values of the parameter (Dt)1/2/h between 1.0 and 1.7. A typical concentration-penetration curve is shown in Fig. 1. The diffusion coefficients calculated from Eq. [I] are plotted in Fig. 2. For comparison, the high-temperature data of Tomizuka and sonder 2 which go down to 630°C are plotted as the solid line 2(a) from their expression D = 0.40 exp (-44,090/RT). Also for comparison, the lowest temperature point of Hoffman and Tumbull3 is plotted. It is apparent that our data diverge appreciably from the high-temperature extrapolation by 373°C. GIS and multivariate geometric distribution have been used to predict the association of high-level intrusives with hydrothermal alteration related to iron oxide Cu-Au (IOCG) mineralizing systems. Several examples in the Russian northeast are presented in this paper. IOCG ore deposits can have enormous geological resources containing significant reserves of base, precious, and strategic metals, and hence are economically attractive targets for mineral exploration. To date, examples of this type of mineralization have not been reported from the northeastern area of Russia. The Tarinskiy ore cluster, located in Eastern Yakutia, shows brecciated altered rocks with sulphide and iron oxide cement, which is typical for IOCG mineralization of the iron oxide Cu-Au±U type. This cluster was formed near surface and is linked with the Rep- Yuruinskiy pluton. It has potential to host new world-class precious metal deposits in northeastern Russia

An accurate and reliable prediction of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) performances, in terms of Rate of Penetration (ROP), utilization (U), and cutter wear rate, is a critical element in the successful planning and execution of mechanical tunneling project. Three open hard rock TBM projects were studied to establish possible trends and correlations between rock mass properties and machine performance. Based on this analysis and literature survey, three geological parameters, including RQD, RMR, and groundwater inflow rate, were identified as having the greatest impact on TBM utilization level. Rate of Penetration (ROP) and cutter wear rate were also correlated with fracture spacing, alpha angle, and Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI).

The Mineral Processing Industry needs accurate Production Simulators for the design of future plants and expansions. To achieve this, these simulators should not only provide an accurate portrayal of the dynamics of individual pieces of equipment they should include the impact of discrete stochastic events such as scheduled and unscheduled maintenance so the relationships between availability, equipment sizes, and plant capacity are understood. To provide such a tool accurate dynamic Population Balance Models need to be combined with solid discrete event modeling. The current paper provides a description of how these two disparate modeling techniques were combined and the associated benefits from this combination. Some eight years ago I became interested to a considerable extent in one of the well-known deposits of sulphury iron ore in New Jersey, and, as a consequence, soon became interested in the subject of the elimination of the sulphur. On investigation I found that no department of pig-iron manufacture had received less attention than that of roasting or calcining ores for the elimination of sulphur, carbonic acid, water, etc. My first devices to eliminate sulphur mere naturally in the limekiln line, with solid fuel mixed with the ore, in the same way = common lime is burnt with small coal. While this process will succeed tolerably well for carbonates or calcareous ores, even though they contain sulphur as sulphates, I soon found it would not answer for our magnetites, which are very hard and dense, carrying from 2 to 5 per cent. of sulphur as pyrites, and become very sticky as soon as any attempt is made to roast them at a high heat. Some laboratory experiments developed the fact that the nearer the gaseous current surrounding the hot ore approached in composition pure atmospheric air the more rapidly the sulphur was oxidized, while in an atmosphere composed largely of carbonic oxide, carbonic acid, and nitrogen, it seemed almost impossible to reduce the sulphur more than one-half, which was a confirmation of the well-known Pact that just one-half of the sulphur in pyrites volatilizes very easily, and that the trouble is mainly to remove the remainder. It was thus apparent that the atmosphere surrounding the ore was of as much importance as the temperature..• This led to the trial of a kiln to heat the ore by conduction through the brick. It was divided into ore-chambers, which were surrounded with flues, through which the products of combustion of gaseoua fuel passed without coming in contact with the ore. We did not, however, succeed by this arrangement in getting more than a cherry-red heat, which, of course, was too low to accomplish anything. I had at this point become convinced— 1st. That gaseous fuel only would accomplish the work successfully. 2d. That since a high temperature was required to insure a rapid oxidation of the sulphur, and also to make the ore open and porous,

The increased effectiveness of a two-phase spray system (TPSS) over a single-phase spray system (SPSS) for dust suppression is reported in several laboratory studies. The dust collection efficiencies of SPSS and TPSS were studied in a model experimental longwall gallery facility at Pittsburgh Research Laboratory at NIOSH (USA). The experimental design consisted of two factors: pressure, and airflow. Each factor had three levels. SPSS experiments were conducted at only one pressure (1035 kPa) which is nearly 1.5 times higher than the highest air and water pressure for TPSS experiments. The results of the study are presented in this paper. While it appears that TPSS performed better than SPSS, the data is not sufficiently conclusive on this aspect. The differing spray characteristics of the chosen TPSS and SPSS nozzles did not allow a direct comparison of the two systems. In the TPSS arrangement, considerably greater turbulence in airflow is created around the shearer; it is likely that at least in the immediate vicinity of the tailgate drum, there is a roll back of the dust/mist cloud into the walkway. Therefore, positioning of the personnel upwind of the tailgate drum is necessary to avoid high dust exposures. The rate of decrease in concentration with TPSS is higher than that with SPSS. This may be due to the greater atomization of the water. The test set-up did not allow the study of conditions when coal is cut from tail to head where the potential for personal exposure is high. Changes in the experimental design are necessary to overcome some of the reasons expected for the inconclusive results.

The The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) is continuing to investigate the behavior of fully grouted roof bolts in the weak roof rock of the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM). This paper describes the results of three studies: • A series of 24 pull tests of bolts installed fully grouted and overcored to leave 12 inches of grouted bolt. The tests compared the pull-out performance of offset-head roof bolts with that of standard 5/8-inch bolts; • A second series of 24 tests that compared the pull-out loads obtained by bolts installed with 1 ft of resin (a Short Encapsulation Pull Test or SEPT) to that of fully grouted bolts overcored to leave only 12 inches of grouted bolt, and; • An investigation into the pressures generated during the installation of fully grouted resin bolts. All of the bolts installed and pulled were overcored and removed from the roof after the pull tests to allow inspection of the resin. The first study found that there was no significant difference in pullout load between the offset-head bolts and the standard bolts. The second study, comparing the SEPT bolts and the partially-overcored fully grouted bolts, indicated that SEPT can significantly underestimate bolt anchorage grip factor, suggesting that the SEPT is a conservative measure of actual bolt performance. Significant loss of resin to cracks in the roof was observed in the bolts overcored in the SRCM. The third study explored one possible explanation for the resin loss, high pressures generated during bolt installation. These tests employed bolts installed in strain gauged steel tubes. The results confirmed that significant pressures (greater than 4,000 psi) can be generated during bolt installation. The results of the pressure tests, combined with the observations of resin loss in bolts installed in the SRCM, suggest that under some circumstances resin loss and under-encapsulation could take place and lead to degraded bolt performance. Glove fingering was observed in all recovered bolts to various degrees. The limited comparative data suggested that the effect of glove fingering ranged from slight to moderate. Complete mixing of the resin was observed on all of the 40 bolts recovered (28 fully grouted and 12 SEPT). Australian and U.S. resins were compared and the Australian resins were observed to have much smaller catalyst compartment areas and lower resin viscosities. These differences are suggested as potential explanations for occasional resin mixing problems noted in Australian resin bolt installations.

Mineral resources in the Silver Creek study area of the Nez Perce National Forest. Idaho, were investigated during the summer Of 1989. The study area includes the 36,100-acre Silver Creek-Pilot Knob RARE II area (No. 1-849) on the north side of the South Fork Clearwater River, about 11 miles west of Elk City, 10. Mines in and near the study area in the Tenmile and Newsome mining districts produced about 100.000 02 of gold, mostly from placers. Gold production had an historic value estimated at 52 million, equivalent to nearly $40 million at today's prices. Lode mines produced about 19,000 oz of gold, along with smaller amounts of silver, copper, lead, and zinc. Of 34 mines and prospects examined, ten lode properties are considered to be significant by virtue of their past development or production and the presence of possibly ore-grade mineralization. There are no identified mineral resources in the study area; however, samples that contained gold and anomalous arsenic delineate a three-mile-long area from the Sentinel mine, north to the Blue Quartz prospect where exploration might disclose resources. One mining company is conducting geophysical studies and drilling within the delineated area. In addition, six placer sites may contain enough gold to be of possible interest for future exploration and development.

"In a cooperative study by the University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, diesel exhaust and mineral dust concentrations have been measured for aerosols generated in the laboratory and in five underground coal mines. Three mines utilized diesel-powered haulage equipment and two used all-electric equipment. Two source apportionment techniques have been applied to differentiate between the mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol concentrations measured. The first technique, using a micro-orifice, uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) for size selective sampling, is based on modeling aerosol size and the premise that the diesel exhaust portion of the aerosol is predominantly submicron and the mineral dust portion is mostly greater that one micrometer in size. The second technique, Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling, was used to referee the analysis of diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol concentrations from the size selective sampling results.The MOUDI size distribution data were modeled to obtain parameters describing the fine and course fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the contributions to each mode from both mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol sources. The results showed the size distribution of the mixed aerosols exhibited two definite modes with the minimum between the modes occurring at 0.8 µm. Less than 5 pct of the coal mine diesel aerosol was found in the coarse size fraction. CMB analysis confirms the original premise for using aerosol size to separate diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol during sampling.Based on the results from the size selective sampling, a personal diesel aerosol sampler has been developed for measuring diesel aerosol mass concentrations. Th.is sampler uses an inertial impactor to size separate the respirable aerosol at 0.8 µm. All material less than 0.8 µm is collected on an after filter for subsequent gravimetric analysis."

Three case histories are provided of recent projects in the United States: the sealing of a major inflow into a quarry, the improvement of a highly loaded bridge pier foundation, and the installation of high capacity micropiles. The AMIRA Code of Practice and Guidelines for Metal Accounting was developed in response to demand from a number of sponsor companies, including one major platinum producer. Since its publication in 2007, the Code has become widely accepted in the mining industry world-wide as a guide for best practice in metal accounting. With the changes in the structure of the platinum mining industry in South Africa over the last 10?15 years, in particular, the starting up of a number of small platinum producers who must have their concentrate smelted and the contained valuable metals refined by third parties, the need for metal accounting systems that are accurate and have an acceptable level of precision has become even more critical to the success of a platinum-producing operation. The current state of metal accounting in the industry is discussed, and possible areas for improved accounting and associated metallurgical efficiencies are identified.

Dimethylglyoxime reacts with nickel in a buffered ammonical-citrate solution containing the detergent ?Aquet? and hyroxylamine-hydrochloride. The resulting nickelous dimethylglyoxime is extracted with xylene. Visual comparison with standards permits the estimation of from 50 to 10,000 ppm of nickel. Soil, rock, or sediment may be decomposed by digestion with (1-3) nitric acid, allowing about 70 determinations per man-day to be carried out. With minor modifications to the above procedure, sediment and soil may be semi-quantitatively analyzed for nickel at the sample site. The chemical equipment is easily portable and the analysis extremely rapid because the buffer, dime thylglyoxime and xylene are added simultaneously to the sample and no heating is required. The sensitivity varies with the "availability" of the nickel ions; under favorable conditions, one may obtain a positive test for as little as 10 micrograms in soils and sediments. This procedure is similar to one, for the field determination of heavy metals described elsewhere by the author.

In situ mining techniques have become prominent in recent years due to declining ore grades, rising costs, and increasing concern for miners' health and safety. Current practices depend heavily on the effective and uniform fragmentation of the ore zone of interest, which not only provides for proper media flow but also exposes additional surface areas to react with the processing system. Specifically, current applications have focused on blasting to a mined-out opening or, in the case of shallow de- posits, blasting to the surface void. In the former case, several obstacles are encountered, including proper initiation, uniform fragmentation, and a lack of swell space for the blast, which tend to produce less desirable results in the zone of' interest.
