Important reserves of nickel ore occur in the Levies district in Oriente, Cuba. The area is mountainous and mostly covered by heavy vegetation. The ore bodies comprise surface tracts of nickeliferous laterite underlain with decomposed serpentine of ore grade. The Cuban Nickel Co., a wholly owned United States Government corporation, owns a plant for leaching the nickel from its ores at Nicaro, Oriente, Cuba, Between December 1943 and March 31, 1954, 5,902,225 short tons of ore was treated, with a recovery of 116,206,519 pounds of nickel (52,711 metric tons). In 1953, 1,330, 224 short tons of ore was mined and 27;"3,129 pounds of nickel produced. The Cuban Nickel Co. also owns a townsite, with the necessary facilities, mining equipment, and 11 miles of railroad. Ore for the plant has been produced from the Ocujal-San Juan claims on lends owned by the Nicaro Nickel Co., a sub¬sidiary of Freeport Sulphur Co. The Government enterprise is man-aged by the Nickel Processing Corp. The Cuban Nickel Co. has denounced mineral concessions and has purchased other claims from private owners.

"AbstractThe Monitoring & Instrumentation Committee (MIC) of DFI Europe has the objective to support DFI members in concern of risk management of geotechnical matters, where monitoring and instrumentation have added value.Work of the CommitteeA study by the committee showed that there are already several existing (national) guidelines. They all have their strengths and limitations and their focus may vary a little per country due to local regulations and typical local building activities, but the main question remains what added value another new guideline would have. More likely it would add to the confusion instead of providing overview.Companies with larger experience in geotechnical monitoring (often larger consultancy firm, contractors or clients) are already quite familiar with its benefits do not really need a new guideline in how to design and effectively apply sophisticated geotechnical monitoring systems for special projects.Therefore the aim of the MIC is to focus a little more towards smaller organizations - that are less familiar with monitoring and instrumentation - and the more ‘regular’ type of project that they are mainly involved in. The MIC wants to create a tool which helps them to create risk awareness, to understand the benefits of geotechnical monitoring and to provide them information about how and where to find the right partners and equipment to setup and apply appropriate monitoring systems for their projects.Monitoring and instrumentation benefits are for example:• Risk control during construction stage;• Costs reduction in design and construction (taken limitation of geotechnical aspects into account).• Prevent of unnecessary delays in construction work• Increasing general awareness of geotechnical risks and possibilities of monitoring.The cost of monitoring compared to the cost of failure and/or the savings that can be achieved play a role in the work of the committee. DFI members benefit from the shared knowledge by the MIC on monitoring and instrumentation within their process of risk management."

The gas-combustion retort developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines at the Rifle Oil Shale Project near Rifle, Colo., is a continuous, gravity-feed retort. The heat required to convert the kerogen in the oil shale to liquid oil is generated by the combustion of product gas and carbonaceous residue remaining on the retorted shale after the kerogen has been converted to oil, gas, and residue. A study of the effects of the process variables on retort operation, product yields, and product properties is important to the successful solution of the problems encountered in the development of a satisfactory process. Statistical methods were used to design the experiments and analyze the effects of the rate of shale throughput, the composition of dilution gas, the height of the shale bed above the air entry, air-gas distributor design, shale size range, and the ratios of the flow rates of the various gas streams entering the retort to the rate of shale throughput.

It is widely recognised that complaints from members of the public relating to blasting operations are related to both ground vibration and air overpressure. It is also known that a complaint is more likely to be generated if the person is inside of a structure at the time of the blast. Reports relating to such complaints often refer to ‘noise’ inside the structure with terms like ‘rattling’ commonly being employed. Such acoustic response is widely perceived within the blasting industry to be directly related to high levels of air overpressure although there appears to have been very little research carried out specifically related to this effect.

The effects of several additives upon the reduction characteristics of hydrogen-reduced ferrous formate are described. The various additives inhibit sintering of the reduced iron particles by apparently different mechanisms. The magnetic properties of the low density compacts produced from the resulting ultra-fine iron powders were improved markedly. THE permanent magnetic characteristics of ultra-fine iron powder prepared by various means have been a subject of considerable interest and experimentation in the past few years. When such particles are small enough to show single domain behavior, they possess' 1—permanent saturation magnetization, and 2—high coercive force. In the absence of domain boundaries, the only magnetization changes in a particle occur through spin rotation which is opposed by relatively large anisotropy forces. With decreasing particle size, the coercive force tends to increase to a maximum and then decrease because of the instability in magnetization associated with thermal fluctuations. Kittel' has calculated the critical diameter at which a spherical particle of iron can no longer sustain domain boundaries or walls to be approximately 1.5x10-' cm. Stoner and Wohlfarthr in England and Neel4,6 in France have shown from purely theoretical calculations that the high coercive force expected from single domain particles is dependent upon crystal anisotropy, shape anisotropy, or strain anisotropy contributions. Further work by Weil, Bertaut,' and many others has contributed much to the understanding of fine particle theory. Neel and Meikeljohn" have demonstrated that a decrease in particle size below a critical value of approximately 160A leads to a quite rapid decrease in coercive force because of the prevention of stable magnetization by thermal agitation. Lih1, working with powders prepared by the reduction of formate and oxalate salts of iron, has shown the marked influence of powder purity upon magnetic properties. Maximum coercive force was obtained in powders of approximately 65 pct metallic iron content while the maximum energy product, (BxH) occurred in powders of 85 pct metallic iron content. Careful consideration of the preceding theoretical considerations and experimental results has led to the manufacture of permanent magnets from ultra-fine ferromagnetic powders by powder metallurgy techniques. Such work has been done by Dean and Davis," the Ugine Co. of France, and Kopelman." The aforementioned work of Kopelman and the Ugine Co. was concerned somewhat with the effect of various additives upon the properties of hydrogen-reduced ferrous formate. Virtually no work, however, has been published on the effects of additives on the reduction rates of metal formates, although unpublished work by Ananthanarayanan16 howed promise of improved energy product in ultra-fine iron compacts prepared by the hydrogen reduction of a coprecipitated mixture of magnesium and ferrous formate. After consideration of the preceding information, it was hoped that a better balance between the metallic iron content and particle size of the reduced iron powder could be accomplished by a prevention of the attendant sintering of the partially reduced iron powder during the reduction reaction. It appeared possible that magnesium oxide might interpose a mechanical barrier between adjacent iron particles and prevent their sintering together, while metallic cadmium and metallic tin would interpose a liquid barrier which might accomplish the same purpose. The degree to which these materials were effective in accomplishing the foregoing objective and the experimental details associated with the work are reported in the following sections of this paper. Experimental Procedure Preparation of Formate and Oxide Mixtures: To obtain ferrous formate of reproducible reduction characteristics, a slight modification' was made in the technique of Fraioli and Rhoda." A supersaturated solution of ferrous formate was mixed with an equal volume of 95 pct ethyl alcohol and the formate crystals precipitated by stirring and screened to —325 mesh. These crystals were in the shape of elongated hexagons, approximately 4x10 micron in dimension. Various preparations of such ferrous formate, designated as lot 111, were reduced for 2 hr, yielding ultra-fine iron particles of exceedingly reproducible size, metallic iron content, and magnetic properties. The magnesium and cadmium formates were prepared by the reaction of dilute formic acid with their respective carbonates, while the tin formate was prepared by the reaction of dilute formic acid with stannous hydroxide. To evaluate the effect of metallic formate additives in intimate mixture with the ferrous formate, varying amounts of magnesium, cadmium, and tin formates were coprecipitated with the latter. Outsourcing of mining operations and services is done for various reasons and there is no single model which fits all situations. Experienced contractors and mine owners have also developed, more often than not, jointly, numerous commercial arrangements and project delivery methods to suit their particular project. It is often the case that some mine owners who have not considered outsourcing to contractors do so because of a simple lack of understanding of the potential benefits. This paper will highlight the potential benefits and perceived disadvantages of outsourcing for mine owners and demonstrate how these issues have been addressed by the mining contracting community over recent times as well as demonstrate the evolution of current commercial arrangements in engaging mining contractors.

The expanding: demand for ilmenite for use in the manufacture of titanium pigments, the knowledge that much of this raw material comes from distant points and therefore has to include a heavy freight charge in the price of the delivered product, and the further knowledge that ilmenite occurs both in the crystalline rocks of northern New Jersey and also in some of the Triassic igneous rocks, were considerations which led to a search for ilmenite-bearing sands in southern New Jersey. That this search was successful is now history, and it is the senior author's privilege to state here that most of the credit belongs to his associates who did all of the heavy work of hand-augering for samples, and who made all of the heavy-mineral separations. We all are grateful to members of the Department of Geology at Rutgers and Princeton Universities for the use of equipment which enabled us to evaluate certain samples from our ilmenite exploration program. In addition, we wish to express our appreciation to many companies for their cooperation and for their permission to publish mineral and chemical analyses. We also acknowledge with much appreciation our debt to the geologists and engineers with whom we have had many lively and rewarding discussions relative to the ilmenite deposits.

The selection of tensioned versus non-tensioned roof bolts, for primary coal mine roof support, has been debated for well over 25 years. The wide spread use of fully grouted rebar marked the beginning of the discussion of the relative importance of bolt tension and the resultant immediate roof compression. The focus is on roof conditions encountered in coal mines however the discussion may be extended to hard rock mines as well. The theoretical bases for both systems are presented, with the analysis focused on the bolt's ability to actually fulfill the theoretical assumptions. Of specific concern are assumptions about bolt tension upon installation and the likelihood of maintaining useful bolt tension over time. The usefulness of tension roof bolting is limited by the mechanical interaction of roof bolt assembly and the rock, which may be valid at the time of installation only. Ambient mine atmosphere and fluctuation in moisture content changes the physical condition of rock, which may have a significant impact on the effectiveness and longevity of bolt tension. Changes in the material properties of the surface of the immediate roof can invalidate the assumptions, which were made in the design stage of roof support system. This means that the roof support in the long term excavations may be inadequate requiring costly rehabilitation. The presented arguments are illustrated with the examples of some relevant experimental data. Tension primary roof bolting is recommended where the immediate roof is: ? DURING the past fifteen years there has been a great change in the methods of treating employ-ment and discharge throughout industry. Perhaps nowhere has this change come more abruptly than in the metal mining districts of the West. In 1909, when I went to work for the Phelps Dodge Corporation in Bisbee, their operations were roughly arranged accord-ing to shafts in seven divisions, each employing from 100 to 250 men underground, and the mechanical department employing some 250 men, mostly on the surface. The underground divisions were each in charge of a foreman who had under him a night foreman and from two to four shift bosses on' each of two shifts. These foremen reported to the underground superinten-dent and he in turn to the superintendent of the mine department. The mechanical department was in charge of the master mechanic who reported to the superintendent of the mine department. RUSTLING A JOB IN THE OLD DAYS It was customary for men seeking employment to "rustle" the division foreman at the shaft during the lunch hour or at the close of the day shift and the master mechanic at the shops. There was no real attempt at interviewing the applicants for underground work. They simply filed in and out of the foremen's office-50 to 150 strong-in ten or fifteen minutes. If the foreman needed men, and he generally did; to replace those that he and the shift bosses had removed during the morning, he picked out those he knew or strangers who took his' fancy. The former in many cases were chosen for negative reasons rather than positive. In selecting the latter, the foreman felt that if they failed to show ability promptly, he could replace them the next day, and often did so. Even if these foremen had been skilful and well trained in the art of selecting men, it would have been impossible under the pressure of other duties to exercise that skill and experience in so doing. The conditions in the mechani-cal department were little better. About all that can be said in favor of such a method was that with a sur-plus of labor it "got by." The labor shortage brought about by the war disclosed its fundamental weakness.

GLASS squares compressed on edge by steel jaws in poor contact with them developed jagged "partial-contact" cracks caused by the formation of local tensile stresses. Compressed by steel jaws in perfect contact, they developed smooth "release cracks" during release of the pressure, caused by the formation of local tensile stresses during the release of the pressure. All these cracks were parallel to the pressure. A Microflash photograph of a disintegrating specimen under sufficient pressure reveals a network of fractures roughly normal to each other, also "release cracks" and a disintegration cloud. The Griffith theory is amended to account for the formation of a first crack. A new theory, based on the theory of thermal agitation and wave propagation, is proposed to account for the progress, velocity and forking of cracks. The network of fractures is shown to have been caused by reflection at a free boundary of pressure pulses emanating from a first crack. Postulating equal distribution of energy in the pulses emitted on either side by a crack in particles, the smaller fragments are shown to continue fracturing preferentially while some of the coarser fragments remain as residual pieces. As comminution of the smaller fragments proceeds, the solid is reduced to a collection of residual particles of smaller and smaller sizes, accounting for the disintegration cloud. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Apparatus A crushing device was built, consisting of a steel frame and two polished, hardened steel jaws to crush plate-glass samples. This device was placed between the plates of a hydraulic press (Fig. I). For centering the pressure, the upper jaw was guided vertically and provided with a rounded top. Later it was replaced by a steel jaw ground out of a 2 1/2-in. steel ball, the lower surface being ground to an optical flat (Fig. 2). Four rollers were used to eliminate side thrust. Screws and centering blocks served to center the specimen in the crushing device. Hard steel shims placed under the shoulder of the upper jaw limited the "follow through" of the jaw after failure of the specimen. Stress distribution was first examined with a polariscope mounted on an optical bench, using monochromatic light. It was found convenient to mount polaroid, quarter wave and monochromatic plates directly on the device itself. A Microflash unit* was used as light source for the photographs. The Bureau of Mines tested eight commercially available, activated charcoals experimentally to compare the following characteristics: capacity for adsorption of nitrogen at 77° K and 170 atmospheres' pressure, surface area, carbon tetrachloride adsorption capacity, hardness, and density. The nitrogen adsorption test was devised to simulate plant conditions occurring in the final step of purification in Bureau helium faciliti.es. The remaining tests were patterned after empirical acceptance tests that are widely used throughout the adsorbent industry. Surface area and carbon tetrachloride adsorption correlated well with nitrogen adsorption. The samples with low density generally had better adsorption qualities than those of higher density. The carbon tetrachloride test appeared to be the most practical for selecting a charcoal to be purchased, but an attrition, or hardness test should also be run to be sure the charcoal will not crumble in use.

"INTRODUCTION This circular contains the story of a stubborn mine fire of electrical origin that started on the main haulage road of No. 59 mine of the Peabody Coal Co. and illustrates that sometimes serious fires can be fought by direct attack. The story also points out that the cost of such procedure can be extremely high, and it is better, therefore, to minimize the possibility of a fire of electrical origin by suitable over-current and line-fault protection. The lives of 163 men were saved by utilizing a recently sunk air shaft near active workings as an escapeway. These men could not have reached the older openings. Also described are the rescue of 75 additional men through another air shaft, sealing of the fire, attempted extin¬guishment with carbon dioxide, and the difficulties of fighting the fire and recovering the mine.A fire occurred shortly before 12 o'clock noon, August 15, 1949, in the No. 59 mine, Peabody Coal Co., Springfield, Ill. All 257 men underground escaped to the surface. One group of 75 men was delayed from escaping for several hours after the alarm was given because smoke and fire gases were circulating in a main return airway, which intervened between their working section and one air shaft, and also in the stairway compartment of the shaft. After being supplied with universal-type gas masks, or self-rescuers, these men were conducted from the mine by members of a State mine-rescue team and other mine employees. Six nine officials were hospitalized because of exposure to carbon monoxide during fire-fighting activities; all were discharged a few days afterward. Later, while doing work incident to fighting the fire, two men were killed, and several were injured by falls of roof and rib.The fire broke out after a collision of a loaded trip with four empty mine cars on the main east haulage entry. The mine cars were jammed against the trolley wire causing a sustained electric arc that ignited the wooden mine cars and the fire spread to the timbers and coal."

"A new pyrometallugical technology, named KLS process, has been developed by Dowa Mining at its Kosaka Smelter to smelt various kinds of lead raw materials.The process consists of clearly separated two reaction steps, smelting and reduction. For this purpose, respective stationary furnaces are installed which are connected by a slag launder.Dry raw materials, together with pulverized coal and oxygen-enriched air, are injected through a lance pipe into the molten slag in the first furnace. It is kept under a high oxygen potential to remove sulfur completely. Resultant PbO rich slag overflows to the second furnace where pulverized coal and insufficient air are also injected through a lance pipe to reduce PbO to lead bullion and to compensate for thermal deficit. The entire operation is carried out continuously. The process development started back in 1981. In late 1986, a pilot plant with a capacity of 3.5t/H was constructed.Already nearly 20,000 tons of raw materials, mostly lead sulfate mixtures have been smelted successfully.IntroductionFor a long time, main raw materials for lead smelting at Kosaka smelter have been such secondary incombustibles as lead sulfate and lead-barium sulfate. The former is leach residue of the copper smelter flue dust and the latter originates from Iijima zinc refinery. While the most of lead concentrates produced locally has been smelted by an ISF of Hachinohe smelter in which Dowa Mining has a share.The surplus lead concentrates were processed at Kosaka by a hydrometallurgical method to convert PbS to PbSO 4 as pretreatment, and followed by simultaneous smelting together with the above secondary materials (1). Approximate output has been 1,5000 /M of lead bullion and slightly more than 2,000t/M of refined lead by adding lead bullion returned back from Hachinohe smelter (2)."

The Hadsel Mill. By R. G HALL (Trans, vol 112 4000 words) This mill is designed to effect the entire reduction of ores by combined crushing and grinding from mine run size to material sufficiently fine for the usual operation of flotation or cyaniding The work is begun and completed in the same machine. The machine is designed on the principal of the elevator wheel, and crushing and grinding are accomplished by dropping a mixture of ore and water upon specially placed "breaker plates" in such a manner that the resultant material passes back into the buckets of the wheel for further elevation One method of removal of the finished product is to permit an overflow of wet pulp on one side of the mill through coarse screens A recent improvement provides for the removal of a pulp by a launder part way up the path of the buckets In either case the pulp passes to a classifier, and the oversize back to the mill in the manner familiar in ball-mill practice Although hardly through the development stage, the machine has given a very good account of itself in simplification of plant, by elimination of coarse and fine crushers with consequent reduction of installation cost and power consumption As compared with the ball mill alone, there is a reduction of power consumption as well as a material reduction of grinding steel There is an increase in cost of maintenance other than grinding steel, but as the machine passes out of the development stage there is a show¬ing of reduction of costs on this item It seems probable that with further develop¬ment and strengthening of the weaker parts further improvement may be made Ball Milling. Historically, efficient beneficiation of ultramafic ores has been challenging, partly due to a lack of clear scientific understanding of the effects of Mg silicates, particularly fibrous serpentines, on selective Ni recovery. Recent research at Columbia-Cytec as a part of a Vale JDP project has led to new insights into the mechanistic aspects of the adverse effects of Mg silicates. Our research has provided strong evidence to support the hypothesis that the adverse effects of Mg silicates are mediated through their large influence on pulp rheological properties, far more than any other pathway. The severity of the effect of Mg silicates is predominantly dependent on the aspect ratios of Mg silicates. For example, the pulp viscosity increases dramatically with increase in the fibrous nature of the gangue mineral leading to poor Ni separation. Various ways by which the suspension rheology affects flotation sub-processes, with implications for remedy are discussed. The insights and results have served to develop (or construct) a phenomenological model to adequately explain all of the ore flotation data, particularly the Mg silicate transport to the froth phase and the concentrate.

"Abstract-In recent years, several unsavory events in international mineral exploration, as well as several widely publicized project difficulties and failures have occurred. The report Setting New Standards has "raised the bar" and proclaimed a "commitment to continuous improvement... and change." We need to evolve from our "generally accepted" practices to more effective quality assurance policies, guidelines and standards. Several steps will be required to support the work of the "qualified persons" now wholly entrusted with technical and professional matters:• adopt a mineral development model and objectives appropriate to orient the selection of workmethods and verification procedures suitable to increase the profitability of these activities;• review the definitions and implications of the terms practice, guideline and standard;• review three quality assurance systems with emphasis on commitment of company management and complementary emphasis on systematic quality policies, plans and manuals (ISO 9000), continuous improvement through "profound knowledge" (Deming, 1986), and self-appraisal of continuous improvement and client satisfaction using the Qualimeter Guide (Québec Society for Quality);• determine, from the objectives of the mineral development model proposed and the problems often encountered, the requirements of resource/reserve estimation and the production feasibility study. To regain investors’ confidence and improve the returns from mineral development activities, an explicit commitment to quality by the board of directors and the management of every company is required.A number of mining companies have gained ISO 9002 certification for their operations but exploration companies should start by developing and implementing quality assurance guidelines and standards based on the ISO 9001 pattern, without achieving actual ISO certification in the short term. Both professional associations and industry organizations must be involved in the process of developing the required quality and continuous improvement guidelines and standards."

"The stability of the markets of energy resources and labor in countries of the Baltic Sea Region including Estonia is determined to a significant degree by the use of combustible shales as fuel and their distillation resulting in generation of up to 70% of non-recyclable waste. The objective of this business plan is to substantiate the investments for establishment of a new facility in Estonia for waste-less and environmentally safe processing of fossil minerals and man-made products generated in the shale industry, as well as other hazardous wastes. The proposed facility will use a basically new waste processing technology developed in Russia - i.e., processing in sparged molten slag This technology eliminates any release of harmful pollutants to the environment and a facility using this technology does not require, therefore, any sanitary protection zone.IntroductionIn the Baltic region, and first of all in Estonia and some other European territories, there are large natural deposits of combustible shale, which due to the lack of other own resources of energy and hydrocarbons for the chemical industry is burned and distilled with low technical and economic efficiency generating large amounts of toxic and highly toxic wastes and intermediate products. Currently, the penalties for disposal of such wastes have grown to such an extent that shale burning and distillation might become unprofitable. This might result in suspension of the given operations, which in turn will affect in an adverse way the markets of energy resources and labor market in those countries. Furthermore, in addition to the “shale problem”, Estonia, similarly to most member countries of the European Union, faces the challange of environmentally safe processing of highly toxic wastes, such as municipal solid wastes, oilpolluted materials, medical wastes and infected materials, spent rubber tires, etc. These wastes are at present stored or processed with release of a significant quantities of extremely toxic cancerogenic substances (dioxins, furans) or collected and exported for treatment at an extremely high cost and with a loss of valuable components contained in these types of waste and often with return of supper toxic processing products."

The Cadia Valley Operations currently hosts a large operational open pit, a large operational sublevel caving underground mine and two other underground projects at the study stage. This scenario creates an unusual situation for the evaluation and planning of a fifth major open pit project. The Cadia East Open Pit is a large gold-copper development located adjacent to the operational open pit and above one of the underground projects. A study team is conducting a comprehensive and robust analysis of the target orebody. Two key factors for this project include the existing and planned projects within the valley and the wide range of available mining methods. The aim for the study team is to present an optimal and practical case which suits the entire Cadia Valley Operation. A rigorous and robust analysis of the situation requires that each factor be properly evaluated. A modular system has been developed which allows the wide range of scenarios to be quickly and meaningfully considered. Sensitivities for each module drive the further development of that particular module. As each scenario progresses, an assessment is made evaluating its value, strategic value and practicality. In such a way, the number of scenarios is gradually reduced at each stage to produce a final short list of feasible cases. Each scenario on the shortlist is then assessed with regard to the existing operations and other projects. A qualitative and quantitative analysis is made. This ranking is used to provide the recommended case.

LISTED among strategic and critical minerals for stockpiling, mica is an important raw material in electronic and electrical equipment industries. Each year large quantities are consumed in the manufacture of television and radio tubes, radar sets, generators, transformers, electric toasters, and irons. Crude mica, which comes from the mine in crystals or in rough books of various shapes and sizes, is known as run-of-mine or book mica. Structural imperfections, impurities, rough edges, and defective laminae are removed by cobbing, rifting, and trimming to produce a marketable block mica or film mica.' After the rough books have been hand-cobbed to remove adhering rock, dirt, and crushed or defective mica they are rifted, or split. In the U.S. a straight-bladed knife is generally used for rifting. Products of this operation are classed broadly as untrimmed sheet mica and scrap. Sheet mica is any relatively flat piece sufficiently free from physical defects to be cut or stamped into specified shapes for industrial use. Sheet mica is classed as block, film, and splittings. Block mica is not less than 0.007 in. thick with a minimum usable area of 1 sq in. Film mica is split from the better qualities of block mica to groups of specified thickness ranging from 0.0012 to 0.004 in. Splittings are sheets with maximum thickness of 0.0012 in. and minimum usable area of 3/4 sq in. As virtually no mica splittings are produced in the U.S., they will not be discussed in this report. Small, low quality block is subdivided as punch and washer. Punch mica is thumb-trimmed material large enough to yield a circular disk of at least 11/2 in. diam for stained quality mica and 1 1/4 to 2 in. for clear quality. Poorer lots, often referred to as washer mica, are also included in the general term punch mica. Trimming, the next step in processing sheet mica, removes broken and ragged edges, loose scales, and other major imperfections. Trimming may be done with a knife, sickle, shears, or fingers. In the U.S. it is usually done with a 3-in. linoleum knife to obtain a bevel-edged cut. If ragged edges are broken off with the thumb and fingers, the mica is called thumb-trimmed.
