"Uranium and thorium mineralization occurs at several localities in eastern Quebec along the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The main occurrences are near Sept-Iles, Baie Johan Beetz, Romaine and St-Augustin river. Mineralization occurs mainly as disseminated uraninite, uranothorite, uranothorianite, monazite and minor zircon and allanite. Yellow to orange oxidation products are observed along fracture planes of the uranium-bearing deposits to a depth of a few feet. Magnetite, biotite and smoky quartz have a distinct tendency to accompany the radioactive minerals. The host rocks include white to pink pegmatite, pink granite and also, in the case of the Romaine and St-Augustin River occurrences, cream to grey plagioclase-rich, well foliated paragneiss and migmatite. Radioactivity near secondary structures, such as fractures and joint planes, indicates some reconstitution of radioactive minerals.The North Shore of Quebec is the northeast extension of the Grenville sub-province. It is also a uranium-thorium metallogenic province."

"Researchers from the National Institute for Safety and Health (NIOSH) installed instruments in the track entry and in the pillars of a northern West Virginia longwall coal mine between two planned panels for the purpose of monitoring the behavior of the ground. The instruments included four cable bolt load cells to measure the change in gateroad loading, six borehole pressure cells to measure the loading in the pillars, three six-channel roof extensometers to measure roof sag, four convergence measurements on the cribs to measure the crib loading, and a multipoint borehole extensometer to measure the pillar expansion. The instrumentation was all connected through two multiplexers to a single Campbell Scientific permissible datalogger located about 350 feet outby the instruments. The goal of the project was to record all of the measurements as both longwall faces passed the site of the instrumentation and to use the data to calibrate numerical models.This report describes the recording of all of the measurements taken as the first panel approached and then passed the instrumentation site. This study provided valuable data related to the ground response and support performance that will be used to improve safety in longwall gateroads.INTRODUCTIONA longwall mine in northern West Virginia was selected as a second study site for an ongoing research project into gateroad layout and support design. The area was affected by a transition from limestone to sandstone in the roof. The entries were 16 feet wide, and the height was approximately 80 inches. The layout for the longwall panels was 1,170 feet wide by 4,000 feet long. The panel configuration was right-handed, and a three-entry gateroad was used between panels. The pillars next to the headgate were 137.5 feet by 115 feet center-to-center, and the pillars next to the tailgate were 275 feet by 100 feet center-to-center, with the crosscuts at 60 degrees. The width of the gateroad was a total of 215 feet."

Several years ago, it was decided to experiment with the use of high-pressure water to bring in finger hangups and reduce the amount of secondary blasting necessary. It was argued that the velocity effect of the high-pressure water would bring down hangups without unduly wetting the ore. Water under a head of about 550 ft. was installed in certain slusher drifts. Ordinary ¾ in. water hose, with a nozzle opening of % in., was used, and water was impinged on the fines under a hangup. Results were excellent. About half the total number of hangups were brought in with high-pressure water without blasting and the cost of this part of the slushing operation was reduced about 50 per cent. Operations were speeded up, dust counts and safety hazards were reduced, and a more desirable working place was secured. The additional water added to the ore was under one per cent and caused no inconvenience in slushing, haulage, or crushing operations. Usually the ore would absorb all of the water, so that none of it would enter the loading drifts. The entire mine, developed by slusher drifts, is being equipped with high-pressure water. Heating Mine by Compressor Cooling Water Several years ago, the problem of heating certain sections of the mine during freezing weather became important. It was calculated that there was sufficient heat in the compressor cooling water to heat the incoming ventilating air current to above freezing, if such heat could be transferred from the water to the air. All schemes of radiation from pipe were rejected as too cumbersome, costly and impractical. It was thought that by spraying the heated water from the compressor cooling system into the incoming air, a satisfactory heat exchange could be accomplished. The only objection was that the sprayed water would freeze and might fill the air-intake drift. However, when water at about 75° to 80°F. was sprayed at the rate of 200 gal. per minute through a bank of sprays into the incoming and freezing air current, this air was thereby heated to above freezing; and although some ice was built up in the air drift, the amount was not objectionable. Occasionally the built-up ice was picked down into the outgoing water stream, which removed it. The entire south and westerly parts of the mine were prevented from freezing. Concreting for Hangups Considerable trouble was experienced in securing hangups of fine ore in slusher fingers that needed repairing. Regular methods of timbering were unsatisfactory. Now, a slab of concrete is poured over the top of the muck by Pumperete machine, almost filling a finger, which gives a satisfactory slab to work under for making the needed repairs. The variety of intermediates, middlings, complex materials and wastes produced in the conventional processing of tin ores as experienced in the tin industry in South East Asia is reviewed. The problems associated with the treatment of these materials so as to produce useful products by hydrometallurgical or pyro-cum-bydrometallurgical approaches are discussed. Results of treatment of amang middlings consisting of cassiterite, struverite, ilmenite, zircon, monazite etc by chlorination with carbon tetra chloride are presented. The efforts to leach tin without letting iron coming in, by alkali leaching of certain wastes of tin processing are also briefly indicated. It is felt that pyro-cum-hydrometallurgical approach can help a viable treatment of these materials so as to obtain usable or value added products.

A technique is described which simplifies the standard procedure for measuring the Bond work index of a specific ore and illustrates how to overcome the strict requirements regarding feed size distribution normally encountered in operating plants. Actual results obtained from various process streams in a copper concentrator are presented and the grindability data are discussed in relation to the observed plant performance. This type of information can be used to gain a better understanding of plant behavior and to assist in the evaluation of plant modifications and process control studies.

Remote sensing methods have been used to evaluate vegetative growth patterns for many applications, though relatively little work has focused on tracking mine reclamation progress. For coal mines in Central Appalachia, reclamation approaches that include production of biofuel feedstocks are increasingly attractive, as these may yield significant post-mining land values and contribute to carbon-neutral energy supplies. To optimize productivity, the influence of reclamation parameters must be well understood ? which necessitates tracking biomass production over long time periods. Satellite-based estimations may offer low-cost alternatives to conventional biomass appraisals, and also the potential to provide critical input for carbon accounting at varied spatial scales. In this paper, we use biomass production experimental plots on reclaimed mine sites established by the Powell River Project (PRP) for a comparative study between satellite measurements of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and inventory estimates of biomass under a variety of conditions. The PRP is a unique public-private partnership in the coalfields of southwestern Virginia dedicated to enhancing beneficial use and environmental protection of mined lands.

Structural alteration of pyrophyllite during mechanical activation in a planetary mill was investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. Mechanochemical effect markedly promotes the decrease in reflection intensities with increasing the grinding time. Prolonged grinding causes the pyrophyllite to become the amorphous structure. It can be indicated that pyrophyllite is very susceptible to alteration by grinding. Crystal size (d006) of pyrophyllite appears to be a limit after 2h grinding. IR spectroscopy analysis shows a little alteration in the bands of pyrophyllite after mechanical activation. The results indicate that the ordered structure of pyrophyllite is destroyed and lattice deformation occurs. Porous silica was then successfully prepared via leaching the mechanically activated pyrophyllite. Pyrophyllite was first ground for 6 h. Ground samples were subsequently leached with 4 M hy-drochloric acid at 80 °C for 2 h to produce porous silica with specific surface area of 188.1 m2/g, total pore volume of 0.18 mL/g and average pore size of 3.9 nm from N2 adsorption analysis. Otherwise, the porous silica obtained from direct leaching of the original pyrophyllite only has a specific surface area of 4.3 m adsorption analysis. 2/g and total pore volume of 0.03 mL/g. It is inferred that grinding is favorable for the formation of microstructure pores. It offers a simple and convenient route for the preparation of porous materials from natural minerals.

Recently, titanium and its alloys have been the materials of choice for the liner and internal components of autoclaves used to extract Ni and Co from laterite ores. There have been many corrosion incidents ranging from localized attacks due to scale formation or welding, to damage caused by pockets of concentrated acid. Most of the literature focuses on methods to avoid the corrosion altogether. Little has been published to increase awareness of the chemistry at these conditions. For this paper, a literature review of the thermodynamics of titanium was undertaken to decipher the slew of information available. E-pH diagrams were constructed from select data and compared with the results of electrochemical experiments. Since nickel laterite leaching takes place in sulphuric acid, and in many cases chloride concentrations are very high, the Ti-H2O, Ti-Cl--H2O and Ti-SO4---H2O systems were considered.

Results of the R/V Sonne Cruise (Edison) to the Tabar-Feni Arc from March 11 to April 5, 1994, a joint German-Canadian research cruise aboard the vessel R/V Sonne, undertook detailed mapping of the Tabar-Feni island chain, Papua New Guinea. The Tabar-Feni chain is host to several large porphyry stocks and epithermal gold deposits, including the giant Ladolam gold deposit on the island of Lihir (minimum 19 million oz. Au). The principal objective of the cruise was to map the seafloor in the vicinity of recently active alkaline volcanic islands in the Tabar-Feni chain and to characterize the tectonic setting of large high-level porphyry and epithermal gold deposits in the region. Additional work was carried out on shallow-water hot springs associated with mineralized geothermal systems on the volcanic islands. Complete sets of 1:50,000 scale (20-m contour) maps of the seafloor were produced for each of the four island groups (Feni, Tanga, Lihir, Tabar). The Lihir group was the most active and the most interesting. At least 4 (and probably 6 or 7), previously unknown volcanic cones were discovered within about 10 miles south of Lihir. The volcanoes are clearly very young and appear to have erupted along extensional faults produced by regional plate rotation. This recent volcanic activity appears to reflect recent forearc extension and represents the southward propagation of volcanic activity towards New Ireland. One volcanic cone at 1,490 m water depth is hydrothermally active, with very large areas of diffuse venting (100-200 m across), densely populated by beds of giant clams (probably calyptogena). Other vent-specific fauna are also present, including crabs, snails, sulfide worms, scale worms, limpettes, etc. The clam beds sit on a crust of hydrothermally baked and indurated, sulfidic, hyaloclastite-rich muds. The mineralization consists mainly of fine-grained disseminated pyrite and amorphous Fe-sulfides. A second, much larger cone at a depth of 1,070 m is capped by massive vesicular lavas which are intensely fractured and mineralized. "SUMMARYA method has been developed for surveying, drill holes without lowering into the hole any surveying equipment other than an etch tube. The orientation of the rods at the collar of the hole is maintained as the etch tube is lowered. The attitude of the etch ellipse in depth with respect to the rod orientation at the collar can then be observed. This relationship permits the bearing of the hole in depth to he calculated. The rod orientation is maintained during the lowering by means of a pair of alinement clamps. One clamp is fastened to the top of each rod as the rod is coupled and is removed when the alinement has been transferred to the other clamp at the top of the next succeeding rod. A particular advantage of this survey technique is that surveys can be readily made in magnetic country rock.PRINCIPLE OF THE TECHNIQUEAn axial lamina of the column of drill roes is the lamina in which one fiber would be the centerline of the rods. In the new survey technique, the rods are fed into the hole in such a manner that the axial lamina of each successive rod maintains its position at the collar of the hole. In depth, as the rods bend in following the drill hole, the axial laminae also bend. The lamina that was originally vertical will, in general, be tilted away from the vertical. The trace of this lamina is marked on the glass etch tube before the tube is lowered in the hole. The axial lamina that becomes vertical at the survey station is recognized as that axial lamina which contains the long axis of the etch ellipse. The angle between the lamina originally vertical and the lamina vertical at the survey station is thus measurable. When the vertical axial lamina at one survey station has been determined by the etch ellipse at that station, angle R between this lamina and the vertical axial lamina at the next survey station becomes measurable also. By moans of angle R, and dip angles D1 and D2 at the two stations, the change in bearing (z) of the drill hole between the two stations can be calculated."

This document presents estimates of future "total cash cost per ounce" and "minesite cost per tonne" that are not recognized measures under United States generally accepted accounting principles ("US GAAP"). This data may not be comparable to data presented by other gold producers. These future estimates are based upon the total cash costs per ounce and minesite costs per tonne that the Company expects to incur to mine gold at the applicable projects and do not include production costs attributable to accretion expense and other asset retirement costs, which will vary over time as each project is developed and mined. It is therefore not practicable to reconcile these forward-looking non-GAAP financial measures to the most comparable GAAP measure. A reconciliation of the Company's total cash cost per ounce and minesite cost per tonne to the most comparable financial measures calculated and presented in accordance with US GAAP for the Company's historical results of operations is set forth in the notes to the financial statements included in the Company's Annual Information Form and Annual Report on Form 20-F, for the year ended December 31, 2009, as well as the Company's other filings with the Canadian Securities Administrators and the SEC.

By the year 2000, China was the sixth largest gold producer in the world, with about one-quarter of total production being derived from refractory or semi-refractory deposits. Although bacterial oxidation plants had been previously tried in China using local technology, these plants had not been commercially successful. The Laizhou Gold Enterprise (Tarzan BioGold Co Ltd) located in Shandong Province, undertook to modernise their gold processing facility in 2000 with the introduction of Bacterial Oxidation (BACOX) Technology. In 1997 BacTech Australia and Mintek of South Africa had formed a technology partnership, combining forces in the provision of bioleach technology. Under a cooperation agreement, BacTech/Mintek were chosen as the preferred technology providers for this first application of commercially proven bacterial oxidation technology within China. The paper describes the successful operation of this plant over the last three years. The events of project implementation are described, from the metallurgical testing of concentrate; through to the commissioning at the design throughput of 100 tonnes per day resulting in 80 000 ounces (2.5 tonnes) per year of refined gold. Process aspects of the operation encountered over the last three years are discussed which illustrate the robustness of the operation. The success of the bioleach facility has led to an advancement of plans to double plant capacity and some of the innovations, which may be employed in this expansion phase, are discussed.

"Results from a small-scale laboratory experimental program show the changes in the vertical stiffness and strength of a soft clayey soil adjacent to the shaft of an inserted pile (i.e. expansion of a cylindrical cavity). The experimental program provides a realistic axi-symmetric physical model of an element of a cylindrical pile and the surrounding soil. The study interprets the improvement and assesses its magnitude in vertical stress-strain-strength properties of a normally consolidated soft cohesive soil in response to preloading impact in the radial direction. The results verify that insertion of a cylindrical pile causes densification of surrounding soil in a radial direction due to change in stress state around the pile, and thus consolidating and stiffening of the soil.The test results indicate that most improvement in modulus and strength takes place within a distance of 4 times the radius of a pile, though significant improvement is realized to a distance of 8-10 times the radius, beyond where there is negligible effect. Settlement characteristics of the surrounding soil in a zone of 12 times the pile radius improve significantly after the formation of a cylindrical cavity. The miniature vane shear strength tests show a 1.5 times increase in a zone of 4 times the pile radius compared to the strength at 10 pile radii. The results also imply that the spacing of cylindrical piles should not be more than 4 to 10 times pile radius, so that the surrounding soil matrix may improve the vertical bearing capacity under any foundation or embankment loading.INTRODUCTIONThe engineering community is familiar with different techniques to improve the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics of weak cohesive and organic soils. Some of the in situ techniques to improve the properties of soft ground (e.g. soft clays) prior to placement of foundations are vertical preloading, deep cemenUlime mixing, stone columns, and grouting (Henn 1996; Moseley 1993). In addition to these methods, researchers have recently showed interest in achieving soft ground improvement by means of applying radial compression method for which different names exist including expanding pile (Kelleher et al. 2001 ), Preload™ Pier (Biringen and Edil 2003), and sand compaction pile (Lee et al. 2004). Handy (2001) has described how preloading can also be achieved by imposition of radial loading in soft ground with an expected improvement in stiffness. The idea behind the latter method is densification and consolidation of soft soil in the radial direction by controlled displacement for which the process can be viewed as a cavity expansion problem (Vesic 1972)."

In a previous report results were given and a method outlined whereby from a knowledge of the composition of the natural gas and of the inflammability limits of the individual constituents composing the natural gas, the limits of inflammability of natural gas and air mixtures could be closely calculated. This method is based on the application of Le Chatelier's law as modified by Coward, Carpenter and Payman, to apply to a mixture of any number of combustible gases. This law must not be used indiscriminately, because many exceptions have been found. For example, when ethylene, acetylene, hydrogen sulphide, or chlorinated hydrocarbons are present the law may not hold. For a discussion of the rally exceptions which have been found, reference should be made to a report by Coward and Jones. Before this method can be used the inflammable limits of the individual constituents must be known. Also, the composition of the complex combustible mixture, and representative mixtures besides, must be tested both experimentally and by calculation to prove whether Le Chatelier's law may be applied.

An expression for the distribution ratio of arsenic between slag and copper matte or liquid copper was developed by both, an extension of the Reddy-Blander moderl for deriving a priori the arsenic capacity, and by a relationship between the arsenic capacity and the arsenic distribution ratio. In this study, the a priori arsenic capacities in the FeO-SiO2, CaO-SiO2,MgO-SiO2, FeO-CaO-SiO2, FeO1.5-CuO0.5-MgO-SiO2, FeO-FeO1.5-CuO0.5-CaO-Mgo and FeO-FeO1.5-CuO0.5-CaO-Mgo-SiO2, slags were calculated at 1573 K. The a priori arsenic distribution ratio between the FeO-FeO1.5-CuO0.5-CaO-MgO-SiO2 slag and copper matte mn (Lx, )' and between the FeO-FeO1.5-SiO2 or FeO-FeO1.5-CuO0.5*-CaO-Mgo slag and liquid copper (Ls/cua) were calculated. The model calculated data are found to be in good agreement with the reported experimental data. The availability of reliable thermodynamic data for slag components and impurities in the slag-matte- metal system is essential for the accurate prediction of impurity capacities and distribution ratio data. The arsenic distribution ratio model developed here, can be extended for predication in multi-componet slags and mattes or liquid metal, and thereby may lead to the development of new slag systems for the efficient removal of arsenic in the copper smelting, converting and refining processes,

"A periodic layered morphology of the reaction zone has been observed in several annealed solid/solid diffusion couples, including metal/metal and metal/ceramic couples. This morphology is characterized by a regular array of alternating layers, which are either single-phase layers or bands of particles embedded in an intermetallic matrix phase. A description of several systems showing periodic layer formation is given. It is shown that the periodic layered structure with the single phase layers and the one with the bands of particles have a different mechanism of formation.IntroductionSolid state reactions in ternary systems can produce a variety of reaction zone morphologies if there are two or more reaction products. Three types of morphology have been described in detail: 1) simple layered; 2) isolated precipitates in a singlephase layer; 3) interpenetrating columnar (lamellar) or interwoven structure. Understanding the factors that govern the formation of different morphologies is of importance in many fields of engineering. For solid state displacement reactions the conditions governing the formation of these morphologies are well understood [1-4]. For example, the development of a layered or aggregate reaction zone depends on the relative diffusivities of the components through the reaction products.This paper is concerned with the periodic layered morphology which has been observed in various solid state systems. We consider this to be a fourth type of reaction layer morphology. Two manifestations of periodic layered morphology may be distinguished. One form consists of regularly spaced layers of particles of one reaction product embedded in a matrix phase (another reaction product). The other form consists of single-phase layers embedded in a matrix phase. It will be shown that each manifestation has its own mechanism of formation. In section A we consider a system (Ag/Ti-foil/Si) in which periodic layer formation will be explained as a special case of the Liesegang phenomenon. In section B we consider systems where the periodic layered structure has a different origin."

A newly developed coal flotation collector ZFC and its flotation characteristics for five different coals were introduced in this paper. ZFC is an emulsion composed of 27% diesel oil, 70% water and 3% surfactants. The main surfactant is synthesized with oil which is environmental favorable and reproducible. Compared flotation experiments show that, at the same dosage, ZFC give 2%~5% recovery promotion than typical collector with only a slightly ash content increment, but saving 70% diesel oil. Zeta-potential and Wetting heat measurement indicate that the surfactant helps the interactions between oil and coal particles, the industrial application tests in several coal preparation plants demonstrate that ZFC is suitable both in technical and economical aspects.

The processes most likely to be adopted for beneficiating ores or concentrator streams containing a large proportion of particles finer than 10 um are froth flotation, selective flocculation, wet magnetic separation and selective leaching. Flotation will be made more efficient for very fine particles if ways can be found to selectively flocculate the valuable mineral beforehand (floc-flotation), to produce smaller bubbles and to reduce entrainment of ultrafine gangue. Schemes for selective flocculation have proved difficult to implement because of the delicate balance between surface forces (electrostatic, dispersion, hydrophobic) and hydrodynamic forces, that determines flocculation, and the changes which occur to particle surfaces through hydrolysis, oxidation-reduction and cross-contamination between minerals in aqueous suspensions. The search for a better understanding of selective adsorption of flotation collectors and flocculants continues and will be particularly important for the practical success of selective flocculation and selective magnetic coating.

Traditional vat leaching methods have had limited success, primarily due to the high cost of loading and unloading the vats. In general, such batch methods are labor-intensive and costly. Heap leaching has emerged as a viable, low- cost alternative, but low recoveries, normally in the 70% range, offer opportunities for improvement. Also increased regulatory guidlelines for effluent and spent heap leach pads disposal offer potential for alternative methods. The Mackie Vat Leaching Jig (MVLJ) has had its incubation at Ortech International, where bench scale through pilot scale testing continues. Design developments and testwork over the past two years indicate that the time may be right for field trials.
