Uranium can be recovered from lower grade uranium ores (<800 mg/kg U3O8), leach residues, and waste dumps cost-effectively via resin-in-pulp (RIP). Using this technology, no solid/liquid separation or washing of the leach residues are required. Furthermore, the uranium recovery can be higher than with conventional methods. RIP technologies have, however, been perceived negatively due to concerns around potential resin fouling and losses. This paper highlights the advancements made in RIP and discusses a number of potential applications where the technology could deliver economic and consequential environmental benefits by reducing the uranium levels in the waste.

"The thiosulfate leaching process developed by Barrick to treat sulfidic high preg-robbing gold ores uses calcium thiosulfate as the leaching reagent for ores pre-treated by pressure oxidation, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a means of reagent recovery. A large portion of the research that led to the development of the technology was based on previous studies completed by different groups over the years, mainly focused on the ammonium thiosulfate system. Operational limitations in the use of the ammonia-containing recycled water in the pressure oxidation circuit were some of the main drivers for the change from ammonium to calcium thiosulfate for the development of the industrial scale process. One of the main aspects for successful gold extraction and recovery in the thiosulfate system is the pseudo-equilibrium reactions that drive distribution of the different gold species (in solids, solution and on resin) in the system. Previous studies have been focused on the thiosulfate reactions and equilibrium constants for the oxysulfur ions (thiosulfate, trithionate, tetrathionate). However, the literature around the effects of the different metal-oxysulfur complexes (Cu and Hg complexes) that form when the ore is in contact with the leaching reagents, and the related effects on stability of the gold complex is limited. The main changes in the gold complex chemistry and stability in the calcium thiosulfate system as compared to the ammonium and sodium equivalents, as well as related effects on gold recoveries, were investigated in the presence of different types of double refractory ores. INTRODUCTION Barrick has developed a thiosulfate leaching process to treat double refractory gold ores, by combining the use of acidic and alkaline autoclave pre-treatment with thiosulfate resin-in-leach (RIL). The process currently in operation at the Goldstrike mine (the TCM process), uses calcium thiosulfate as the leaching reagent, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a mean of reagent recycle. The main feed to the process plant is highly preg-robbing sulfidic ore from Goldstrike’s open pit. Prior to feeding the pressure oxidation circuit, the ore is processed through the crushing and grinding circuits and treated in preparation for acid or alkaline autoclave processing (POX)."

There are some problems in the beneficiation of fine-grained oxidized iron mineral such as high cost, severe sliming, poor results and low recovery due to the fine disseminated size of the mineral. Taking several representative types of finely-disseminated oxidized iron minerals as examples, the author analyzed the main difficulties in the beneficiation of such kind of ores and discussed the existing problems in grinding-classification, technological process, flotation reagents and separation equipments and the resolvents of these problems.

A 1981 U.S. Bureau of Mines investigation indicates the Panamint Dunes Wilderness Study Area (WSA) has one active (intermittent) mine,--borrow pit MS 242 owned by the California Department of Transportation (Cal Trans). This mine produces cinders for road base and traction grit. It contains about 900,000 tons of inferred reserves. Examination and sample analyses indicate the Panamint Dunes deposit, covering about 480 acres of the WSA, may have silica resources and the Green Quartz Claim may have copper resources. Carbonate rocks occur in the WSA, but stone resources have not been identified. Adjacent to the WSA, the Big Four Mine contains 35,000 tons of inferred subeconomic zinc-lead-silver resources, and may have additional resources. Sample analyses indicate the Apple 1 Claim, also adjacent to the WSA, may have silver-lead-zinc resources.

"The Phalen Colliery, the Cape Breton Development Corporation&apos;s flagship, is now producing thermal and metallurgical grade coal in Eastern Canada&apos;s Sydney Coal Field. The colliery is a drift mine operating under the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Improved mechanization, including a 2200 tonne per hour cable conveyor, and the introduction of modern retreat longwall mining methods as part of the Phalen concept are now paying off in better productivity and low operating costs. Geological conditions within the coal field are consistent with plans for ever greater outputs in the 1990s. Although much of the current production improvement is related to uprated machine capacity and simplified mines planning there is potential for even further development in the areas of maintenance, process control and engineering. Human resource development will also be a key factor. These programs are now well under way and Phalen Colliery is poised for top results in the 1990s. Comparison of the CBDC&apos;s top producer with similar operations elsewhere in the world, quantifies that potential.IntroductionAn exciting new mining project which has recently started production on Canada&apos;s East Coast has been conceived and designed to be one of the most modern and productive coal mining operations in North America.As with all mining operations, the business is basically that of material transportation. Daily, the product is transported many kilometres from the underground face to the surface and then to washing facilities. Men, materials and equipment are transported to and from the surface and the operating faces and services, such as electrical power, ventilating air, fresh water, discharge water, communications and compressed air are supplied throughout the operation to cover operating requirements. On all accounts the operation has been designed to take advantage of the latest proven technology."

Abstract -The Riviera tungsten occurrence in the Cape Province of South Africa was discovered in October 1979 as a result of stream-sediment panned concentrate sampling. The Cape age granite and late Precambrian Malmesbury Group carbonates and chlorite schists which it intrudes and which host the mineralization are covered by between 10 m and 30 m of Tertiary/Recent alluvium and clay. The scheelite/powellite and molybdenite mineralization occurs in a greisenized granite cupola with an overprint of porphyry-type alteration as well as in minor skarns. The ore reserve is estimated to be 46 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.2160Jo W03 and 0.020% Mo. The deposit is uneconomic at current tungsten prices.

In recent years there has been an increased focus on corporate governance matters worldwide. The duties and responsibilities of directors of companies have come under close scrutiny, with shareholders increasing their demands for greater responsibility and accountability. Media attention and pressure groups have also had their effect. Governmental actions have supported these demands and directors have witnessed sweeping legislative changes imposing more onerous duties and liabilities than formerly imposed upon them at common law and in terms of the Companies Act. At the same time, the power of regulatory bodies has been increased to enforce this legislation and make someone pay to remedy an alleged infringement. Breach of such duties may incur personal or criminal liability, or both. Environmental protection legislation has become a particularly prevalent feature in this regard, and the number and complexity of statutes concerning the environment have increased over the past few years. Directors of South African companies will be familiar with relevant acts such as the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998; Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act 43 of 1983;Hazardous Substances Act 15 of 1973, as well as the National Water Act 36 of 1998. Now the directors of mining companies are faced with the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002.

PRIOR to 1936, the Ontario Refining Co. received all incoming blister copper from The International Nickel Company&apos;s smelter in the usual form of 460-lb. cakes, or slabs. These were received in open cars in lots of 250 pieces. At the refinery the cakes were unloaded onto narrow-gauge cars, for convenient handling and pickup by charging cranes. In March 1936, an investigation was started on the feasibility of trans-ferring converter copper in the molten state from the smelter to the refinery anode furnaces, a distance of 114 miles. Although common in steel practice, the transportation of blister copper in this form had not previously been attempted and a preliminary study of the various factors involved was therefore necessary. For this purpose, a series of experiments was made in which molten copper, removed at different stages during the furnace cycle, was held in a small portable holding furnace. This vessel was essentially a refractory-lined steel cylinder provided with ports for filling and emptying, heated by an oil burner. Dimensions of the steel shell were 3 ft. 10 in. diameter by 7 ft. 3 in. long, and thickness of refractories depended oil the design and combination used for the particular experiment. The vessel was filled with approximately 2 ½ tons of copper at a predetermined temperature, the lining having been preheated to a definite point by means of an oil burner. All openings were well luted and temperature readings were made every 15 min. by means of an immersion-type thermocouple. In this manner the rate of heat loss resulting with different refractory design could be developed. The ratio of exterior surface to weight of metal was taken into consideration in comparing the experimental results with what might be expected for a full-sized unit, and observations were also made on type and degree of slag accretion. It was not possible to get as much information on this latter point as desirable, but all evidence showed that the problem would be control of slag build-up rather than attack oil refractories.

"Mineral reserve statements as well as optimizing mine planning require a block model with grades for each mining block. A cut-off grade is determined by considering the mining costs as well as the expected revenue for each block. These grades are estimated using various techniques, but in reality there is uncertainty in the grade values. These uncertainties result in two types of error. A type I error is where material is classified as ore and mined, but the true value is below the cut-off grade and the material is therefore waste. This material constitutes dilution. The type II error is where material is estimated to be below the cut-off grade and is classified as waste, whereas the true grade is actually above the cut-off grade. This material is not mined and the value is lost.This research considers the value of the lost ore and the costs of dilution under various degrees of uncertainty. Simulation using @Risk and mixed integer linear programing (Excel Solver) is used in a financial optimizer model to maximize either profit or net present value. This is applied to four Witwatersrand tabular gold deposits to investigate the impact of block grade uncertainty on cut-off grades.When optimizing for profit, value may be added by adjusting the cutoff grade slightly downwards. When optimizing for NPV, value may be added by lowering the cut-off grade significantly for the lower discounting rates. At higher discount rates, the lowering of the cut-off grades should be reduced, and in some cases an increase in cut-off grade may be required. Each mine reacted differently to the optimization and thus there is no single rule that can be applied across all tabular Witwatersrand gold deposits."

The concept of data availability must be addressed, because there are perceptible changes from year to year, and the availability of accurately reported, precisely defined statistics and nonstatistical information provides the only sound basis for analytical studies required for government policy planning or industry market analysis. As the countries of Eastern Europe and the former U.S.S.R. undergo the transition from centrally planned economies to market economies, there has been a perceptible increase in information availability for rather obvious reasons. Any industrial operation seeking economic assistance from Government and/or private sources outside the country in which the facility is sited must provide some appraisal of its operations at the time it seeks assistance, as well as some information on previous performance to serve as tools in evaluating its potential under the proposed development scheme for which it seeks financial assistance. Additionally, there was growing governmental recognition that concealment of much of the national mineral production, trade, and consumption data for purposes of national military and/or economic security probably never was very successful, never was really necessary for most commodities, and certainly proved unnecessary with the end of the so-called cold war. This Bureau of Mines report describes the Human Factors in Mining Search System (HFMSS), a computerized information retrieval system that provides relevant human factors information from journal articles, research reports, seminars, conferences, etc. in terms of 19 mining-related categories. It is the only existing data base that stresses all of the areas of human factors as applied to mining. Examples of these categories are biomechanics and work physiology, human error and human reliability, work design and task analysis, manual materials handling and back injuries, hand tools, organizational and management practices, psychological factors, and training. Although the emphasis is on literature dealing directly with mining, applicable material from other areas of research is included for those categories in which little research has been done in mining. Each record in HFMSS can be recalled by any field such as title, author, date, source, descriptive terms or key words, as well as by any words found in an abstract that describes the purpose, procedure, and results of the research. This report describes HFMSS fields and subject categories, the annotated bibliography, user&apos;s manual, and thesaurus of key words. Example printouts in both brief and full formats are included as an appendix.

Introduction Brine reservoirs along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf coasts are currently under study to investigate the technical and economic viability of production wells designed to extract methane gas in solution. The effect of well pressure drawdown on reservoir rock and associated overburden material is important to well performance predictions and the analysis of potential subsidence problems. Consequently a series of compaction tests have been conducted on sandstone and shale cored from a test well drilled near Hitchcock, Texas, in order to determine the variation of mechanical properties to be expected over the producing life of the formation. Previous Work The referenced tests are part of an extended study of geopressured-geothermal reservoir behavior, including compaction (Jogi, Gray, Ashman, and Thompson, 1981 and Jogi, Kalra, Gray, and Thompson, 1981) and creep (Thompson, Jogi, Gray, and Richardson, 1981) tests of reservoir rock and related reservoir performance studies (Rago, Okhuma, Seperhnoori, and Thompson, 1985). Recent work has considered the nonlinear constitutive behavior of sandstone (Fahrenthold and Gray, 1985 and 19861, while additional experimental work is reported here. Geological structure and composition of the Hitchcock field from which the core samples were obtained is discussed by Light (1985). Experimental Procedure Compaction tests were conducted on cylindrical cores, nominally 2.75 inches in length and 2 inches in diameter, with independent control of the axial, confining, and pore pressures. Axial and radial deformation of the samples were measured in tests over a range of effective stress states expected to develop over the reservoir lifetime. The term effective stress as used here refers to the algebraic difference of the total stress and pore pressure, with compression taken as positive. Three types of compaction tests were conducted on the sandstone. In the uniaxial tests, axial total stress and radial strain were held constant as the pore pressure was reduced, similating one dimensional compaction which may occur during reservoir depletion. In the triaxial tests, radial total stress and pore pressure were held constant as the axial total stress was increased, duplicating conventional rock compaction test procedures. In the pore pressure drawdown tests, axial and radial total stresses were held constant while the pore pressure was reduced, in order to investigate differences in sample response to mechanical and pore pressure loading. Compaction tests were also conducted on shale material obtained from the reservoir overburden. The field coring process provided few consolidated shale sections sufficiently large to allow preparation of samples with the dimensions described above. With additional attrition during sample preparation of this brittle material, ultimate yield of the coring effort was limited. The few available samples were tested in uniaxial and triaxial tests similar to those described above. The use of displacement transducers to measure sample deformation avoided the difficulty of strain gauge installation on this material. Test Results The sandstone and shale both demonstrated nonlinear stress-strain behavior, with hysteresis and residual strain present upon unloading. Polynomial interpolation of the stress-strain curves was used in the calculation of incremental values for the loading and unloading moduli. Figures 1 and 2 show example axial effective stress-axial strain curves for triaxial tests conducted on sandstone and shale samples. The figures plot incremental stress and strain variables, defined as deviations from the state of prestress to which the sample was subjected. This paper reports the results of the study of the influences of concentration and modulus of sodium potassium silicate solution (Na-K activator) and curing mode on the phase composition, mi-crostructure and strength development in the geopolymers prepared using Class F fly ash. X-ray dif-fraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and MAS NMR are utilized in this study. It shows that the compressive strength increases while sodium potassium silicate solution modulus increases, but when modulus exceeds 1.7, the compressive strength decreases, and it decreases markedly while modulus is greater than 2.0. The compressive strength improves with increase of sodium potassium silicate solution concentration. When the concentration is 36%, the compressive strength reaches the maximum. Elevated temperature can increase the strength of samples synthesized using sodium potassium silicate solution with 32% concentration and modulus 1.2. Compared to the strength of the sample cured at 50?, the strength of the samples cured at 65? and 80? are higher at 1 day and 3 days, but when cured at 80?, strength is smaller than that cured at 50? for 7 days. When temperature is too high, too long curing time will decrease the strength. Long precuring at room temperature before application of heat is beneficial for strength development, and there is about 10%~50% increase in strength of the samples cured at 1 day precuring and 2 days elevated temperature as compared to the strengths of the samples cured for 3 days at elevated temperature or cured for 28 days at room temperature. The main product of reaction in the geopolymeric material is amorphous alkali aluminosilicate gel.

"Milling circuits play an important role in achieving the desired product; tonnage, size distribution and properties, since they are directly linked to the comminution energy consumption for the whole process. A grinding model with a mathematical simulation was developed for an open milling circuit with a scalped feed from a hydro-cyclone. The circuit was optimized by determining the optimal conditions in terms of energy consumption which would produce a floatable product having a desired size range (i.e. -75 +9 µm) for a platinum-bearing ore. The simulation results showed an operating region comprising the best combination of the ball filling and mill speed to achieve the highest production of a floatable size class, with the minimum energy consumption.INTRODUCTIONBall milling is usually conducted in closed circuits in order to achieve a desired product size without material overgrinding. The technological importance of optimising milling circuits cannot be overemphasised (Toneva and Peukert, 2007). Previous work has brought significant insights into the benefits of modelling milling circuits (Austin et al., 1984; King, 2012; Toneva and Peukert, 2007). However, the ability to model these circuits is dependent on the performance of the classifiers and the fidelity of the grinding mill model used compared to the actual circuit (Toneva and Peukert, 2007). Austin et al. (1984) identified five types of milling circuits as shown in Figure 1 namely; the grinding circuits employing mill in an open circuit, normal closed circuit, reverse closed circuit, open circuit with scalped feed, and, the combined closed circuit. Depending on the presence of the first classifier, the second, or both as well as their corresponding loops (streams), the combined circuit (e) can reduce to; an open (d), a normal closed (b), an open circuit with scalped feed (c) or a reverse closed circuit (a). In the case of an open circuit, the mill is operated without being directly influenced by a classifier. The normal closed circuit does not have the first classifier and therefore the make-up feed is the actual feed stream. Conversely, the reverse closed circuit keeps only the first classifier. The open circuited with scalped feed has only the first classifier but does not have the second one. The overflow stream from the classifier is mixed with the mill product to form the final product for the downstream process."

The Pike River Coalfield is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand near the top of the Paparoa Range approximately 45 km north east of the coastal town of Greymouth. The Pike River Coal Company Ltd (PRCC) is owned jointly by New Zealand Oil &amp; Gas Limited (NZOG) and private investors. &nbsp; The project has followed a long and difficult road towards project implementation which is now a reality with mine construction scheduled to commence in November 2005. The first stage of the project, the consent and land access process has been the most difficult. Resource consents for the project were first applied for, granted and appealed in 1998. A second round of modified resources consents followed a similar path in 2001. Following consultation with a range of parties including local and central government as well as the Department of Conservation, in March 2004 the Minister of Conservation granted PRCC access through Department of Conservation land. In October 2004, the Environment Court issued a Memorandum of Consent granting resource consents with conditions that had been negotiated between PRCC and the appellants. &nbsp; The second stage of the project, investigation and design, commenced in December 2004 and was completed in June 2005 with the PRCC board ratifying the project capital and operating budgets. While the investigation and design work was proceeding, PRCC were also engaged in securing private equity and bank debt funding for the project. Formal Board approval to proceed with project construction was granted in September 2005 following completion of fund raising. &nbsp; The project consists of a number of significant construction activities, namely: +&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 10.5 km of mine access road through previous logged and virgin rain forest; +&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 2.2 km of tunnel through metamorphic rock; +&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; a coal preparation plant about 8.3 km from the mine portal; +&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; an underground coal preparation plant; and +&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; a major slurry pump station, high and low pressure underground water supply systems to support hydraulic mining units and underground coal transport respectively. &nbsp; Project construction is expected to be completed in April 2007 with completion of the ventilation shaft. Mine production will commence in December 2006 with coal from pit bottom development which will be carried out by the mine owner.

Step 4: Selection of explosives and initiation system Various types of explosives are manufactured in India and a wide choice is available among them that include nitroglycerin based explosives, slurries, emulsions, ANFO (ammonium nitrate mixed with fuel oil) and heavy ANFO. The choice is also available between cartridged and bulk loading systems. In Indian mines, much importance is unduly given to the cost of explosives alone which is not conducive to optimization of blast design parameters. The concept of energy per meter of blasthole and the way in which the total explosive energy is partitioned between shock and heave is not considered in the prevailing practices. Besides, very little efforts are made to objectively evaluate the performance of explosives for a given site condition. Tailoring explosives is limited to changing the density of the bulk explosives. Cartridged explosives are still being extensively used in large operations where bulk explosives should be the preferred choice.
