Particles for heap leaching in conventional circuits are prepared using Cone crushers. Cone crushers are used to crush the ore to the size range between 12-25 mm for heap leaching operations. Leaching from these relatively coarse particles occurs only at the surface and in subsurface regions, which are accessible from the surface by cracks and pores. Since leaching is active in accessible areas, the method of comminution that forms multiple cracks and pores would offer an advantage for heap leach. An investigation was performed in this study to assess if the HPGR forms more cracks and pores than a Cone crusher. X-ray computed tomography (CT) was used to characterize the degree of cracks and pores formed by these two comminution devices that can be used for heap leaching feed preparation. In order to compare the effect of the comminution method on crack network generation, a bulk sample of the zinc ore was crushed by the HPGR at three different pressure settings (45, 95 and 120 bar), the sample ore was also crushed with a Cone crusher for comparison purposes. Products from the Cone crusher and HPGR experiment were then screened into five size fractions ((-25 +19), (-19+16), (-16+9.5), (-9.5+5), (-5+4.75) mm), Subsamples from the ((-25 +19), (-16+9.5), (-5+4.75) mm) size fractions were analysed. The spatial distribution of the crack network of sphalerite particles was characterized using a highresolution industrial X-ray CT system. This paper describes the use of image analysis techniques including image segmentation, which uses a combination of thresholding and other methods to characterize and quantify crack and mineral dissemination in the sphalerite particles after comminution with the HPGR and Cone crusher. The results are validated with those obtained using traditional techniques such as physical gas (with N2) adsorption, mercury intrusion porosimetry, SEM and QEMSCAN.

The flotation performance of Florida phosphate rock was evaluated in terms of the mixing behavior of reagents and particulates during anionic conditioning of phosphate slurries. The various conditioning variables that influence mixing, namely, solids loading, agitation speed and conditioning time, were investigated to determine their effect on reagent coating of the particles. The phosphate recovery was used to monitor the conditioning efficiency. The mixing characteristics of the phosphate feed were evaluated in terms of the ratio of the mixing power (P) to the minimum power (Pm) required to keep the slurry in suspension. It was found that mixing conditions govern the conditioning time required to obtain a high recovery. Reagentization was slower at lower P/Pm ratios. At higher P/Pm ratios, the flotation recovery was optimized, and the agitation speed was found to have no significant effect. Optimum mixing conditions were obtained for a74 wt% slurry at an agitation speed of 450 rpm (47 radians/sec). Under these optimum mixing conditions, the collector dosage required for an improved recovery was lower and the conditioning time was shorter.

The expansion of gold production in Nevada's Carlin Trend over the last few years has been staggering. To increase gold production while minimizing capital requirements and providing for the safe and efficient mining and processing of ores has required a tremendous effort by the mine engineering group at Newmont Gold. Organizational changes were implemented by the company to effectively deal with a full range of engineering problems. Specially developed computer software and its applications will be explained in this article as well as improvements in the techniques used in converting geologic resources into reserves. Scheduling procedures for the mining of multiple pits to feed multiple processing facilities will likewise be presented. Ore control procedures and current mine engineering practices are discussed. Growth at Newmont Gold Expansion of production levels at Newmont Gold Co. was brought about primarily by the economic incentive to exploit increased reserves. In this paper, a model for the resin anchor bolt system is developed in which the smooth bar is modeled by using one-dimensional truss elements and the resin annulus is modeled by using axisymmetric elements. These two submodels are combined together and then incorporated into the' existing computer code ROOFBOLT. After this development, all of the components in the resin anchor bolt system including smooth bar, bearing plate and resin annulus can be correctly modeled.

DURING the roasting of zinc sulfide concentrates and by-product recovery from flue dusts, the zinc sul-fate phase may occur in various stages of the processes. In addition to zinc sulfide, other sulfide phases are usually present such as CdS, PbS, CuzS, and FeS. Consequently, the effect of these sulfides on the thermal decomposition of ZnS04 was investigated. Merck high-purity, anhydrous zinc sulfate was used as the starting material. The sulfate was heated under an argon atmosphere, at a rate of 10°C per min. With the first slight indication of decomposition as determined by gas analysis, the sample was removed from the furnace and allowed to cool. X-ray patterns showed no other phase present. It is estimated that less than 0.05 pct of the ZnS04 decomposed. The metal sulfides were also heated under an argon atmosphere to drive off any adsorbed water. The materials were then sized (-200 to +270 mesh), mixed in predetermined mole ratios, and pressed into pellets. The experimental measurement of the reaction rate consisted of purifying the argon carrier gas, continuous flushing of the heated reacting mixture with argon, and collection and analysis of the SOn product gas. Introduction Caverns of 50 m in linear dimension at depths below 2300 m with a life of more than 25 years are proposed for the next generation of water-filled neutrino detectors. Little precedent exists for excavations in such an extreme environment, although some guidance is available from mining experience at great depths, for example, in South Africa, in Canada and at the former Homestake Mine in the U.S.A. Unlike mining for ore, there are choices available in the construction of such caverns that may mean the difference between success and failure. These choices should be informed by rock engineering principles. Recently proposed guidelines for orientation of brick-shaped caverns where the long dimension is a small multiple of the short dimension indicate that the most favorable orientation is with the long and short dimensions parallel to major and minor preexcavation principal stresses (Pariseau, 2005). Numerical analyses at reduced strength indicate some yielding at cavern walls should be expected but that an equilibrium state is quite possible and is aided by arching the back into a spherical dome when the cavern is an empty cylinder (Tesarik and others, 2002). The same indications of stability occur with brick-shaped caverns. However, the most dangerous situation occurs during the excavation sequence to final cavern dimensions. There are any number of excavation sequences that lead to the same final cavern shape, so there is an opportunity to partially optimize the sequence with construction guidelines that minimize peak stress concentrations during construction. This contribution discusses three practical excavation sequences that lead to the same brick-shaped cavern in the strong, massive Yates formation at the Homestake Mine where considerable rock mechanics data has accumulated through the years(e.g., Pariseau, 1985, Pariseau and others, 1995) and where actual mining on the 8000 Level indicates a strong possibility of successful investment in the next generation of large, deep neutrino detectors. The main results are: (1) a favorable brick-shape is one with dimensions in the same proportion as the preexcavation principal stresses (compressionpositive), and (2) favorable orientation of the most extreme but temporary shape of excavation is also best for the construction sequence. Analysis results from a mix of Homestake Mine data and possible excavation geometry illustrate the advantages of these guidelines.

Introduction The cleaning of coal to remove sulfur and inorganic impurities has, in recent years, become an essential operation in any coal utilization process. US coals, on average, contain about 3% total sulfur, of which more than 60% is generally inorganic or pyritic sulfur. Existing technologies such as heavy media cycloning, selective agglomeration, and electrostatic separation have the potential for removing about 80% of the pyrite from coal (Khoury, 1981). In view of the large volumes of coal being used today, there exists a need for the development of new processes to further improve the separation of pyrite from coal. Colloidal particles in suspension possess surface charges that are related to the chemical composition of the particles. In aqueous suspensions, the surface charge is a function of pH. For coal-pyrite mixtures, it is possible, by an adjustment of the pH (also a function of polar molecules), to reach a state where the charge on coal is very close to zero, but the charge on pyrite is still substantial. The introduction of collector particles with a charge opposite that of the pyrite should then result in the selective flocculation of pyrite and collec¬tor. These flocculates should settle out much faster than coal and could be removed from the bottom of the settling column. This note discusses our preliminary observations of the effect of clay-based collector particles, especially bentonite, on the settling behavior of coal and pyrite. These experiments were conducted with a view to developing a new electrokinetic flocculation process for separation of coal-pyrite mixtures. Experimental The objective of the experiments was to determine the effects of clay-based additives on the settling rates of clean coal, pyrite, and coal-pyrite mixtures. Illinois Colchester (No. 2) coal was obtained after processing in an existing coal cleaning facility. This coal was reported to contain less than 0.3% pyritic sulfur, which was in the form of a fine powder with an average particle size of 5µm. Pyrite (of average particle size 5 µm) was also obtained from the same facility and reportedly contained less than 0.1% coal. The zeta potentials of coal and pyrite in water were measured as a function of pH using a zetameter. The pH was adjusted by adding sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid to the suspensions. Sedimentation experiments were conducted in 50-mL glass cylinders, and settling rates were measured by noting the height of clear liquid above the settling front as a function of time. Settling behavior was also charted by periodically taking photographs of the system. The following systems were investigated: •a slurry consisting of 2.5 g of clean Illinois Colchester coal in 50 mL of water of pH 6.0, with and without the addition of 0.5 g of bentonite (Fisher, purified grade) ; • a slurry consisting of 2.5 g of pyrite in 50 mL water of pH 6.0, with and without the addition of 0.5 g of bentonite ; and • a slurry consisting of a mixture of 1.25 g clean coal and 1.25 g pyrite in 50 mL water of pH 6.0, with and without the addition of 0.5 g of bentonite. In addition, experiments were conducted with kaolinite (Bath, South Carolina) and alumina (Fisher, purified grade) as collector materials to verify the observed effects. Results and discussion Figure 1 shows the zeta potential values for the Illinois coal and pyrite as a function of pH. The zeta potentials of coal and pyrite decrease with increasing pH, changing from an initially positive value at low pH to a negative value at high pH. The point of zero charge (PZC) for the coal is at a pH of 6.2, while the PZC for pyrite occurs at a pH of 10.3.

The twentieth century has often been spoken of as the age of petroleum, and from many viewpoints it can be justly considered so. Certainly the petroleum industry is one of enormous importance to this country, industrially, financially, and economically. The United States, however, at present producing over 60 per cent of the world's total output of petroleum, is not producing petroleum at a sufficient rate to provide for its own domestic, consumption. For several years this country has been importing increasing quantities of crude and partly refined oils from Mexico, and has been drawing heavily on domestic stocks of petroleum. Production in the United States is increasing, but it is not increasing at the same average rate as domestic consumption, nor is it probable that in the future domestic production will increase sufficiently to satisfy the demands of domestic consumption, but on the contrary, in the opinion of those best qualified to know, the peak in the curve of domestic production of crude petroleum will be reached in a comparatively few years, whereas the consumption of petroleum and its product will increase at a continually growing rate. This country, then, must turn, and as the increasing imports from Mexico indicate, is turning to other sources than the crude petroleum, produced in this country to make up the deficit between domestic production and domestic consumption of petroleum and its products,

The effect of leach promoting reagent LPF on the leaching process of a weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore has been investigated and the mechanism is discussed. The result shows that the leach promoting reagent LPF can enhance the leaching extraction of rare earth ore effectively. With the addition of LPF to the lixiviant at a concentration of 0.1%, the leaching extraction increased by more than 8%, the ammonium sulfate concentration could be decreased by 25%, and the leaching liquid/solid ratio reduced by 34%. The mechanism analysis shows that LPF can react with rare earth ions and form soluble coordination compounds, thus reducing the activity of the leached rare earth ions, increasing the concentration difference for ion diffusion, and promoting the rare earth leaching process. These results will hopefully help point to a new approach to making the leaching process of low-grade weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore more efficient and with lower lixiviant consumption.

Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi's (CMDIC) Concentrator Plant is located at 4300 meters above sea level, approximately 2000 kms north from Santiago, Chile. The concentrator has three grinding lines. Each one, Lines 1 and 2, have one SAG mill at the primary grinding stage followed by a secondary grinding and classification stage consisting of one ball mill, two hydrocyclone batteries and a sump with two pumps. Line 3 has one SAG mill (Gearless Mill Drive), followed by a secondary grinding and classification consisting two ball mills, four hydrocyclone batteries and a sump with four pumps. Average throughput for these three lines is 150 Ktons per day. Peak values of 180 ktons per day have been achieved. Since late 2008 and throughout 2009 and 2010, Operations and Automation areas developed an optimization program for the grinding process, considering the implementation of Model Predictive Controllers (MPC) for the three SAG mills, and later, extending MPC to the secondary grinding and classification stages. The implementation of a MPC solution was based on stability considerations (high variability of the SAG process, high interaction between sump level control and classification efficiency, etc), requirements for an automated and consistent operation, the need to maximize throughput under timevarying scenarios and, in the long term, optimization of grinding process considering Specific Energy Consumption, among other parameters. MPC solutions had proven control robustness and strong optimizing capabilities in terms of helping in discovering new operational points and so achieving all of the aforementioned goals. On the first stage of the program, MPC implementation considered identification of dynamical process control models based mainly on historical data, in order to know the impact of a group of Manipulated Variables over Controlled Variables. Also, the impact of measured Disturbance Variables was modeled in order to take into account the high impact and interaction of these variables over the processes. At the end of this stage, 4 controllers were successfully operating for the 3 SAG mills and the secondary grinding and classification process. In response to challenges made by the working group, the second stage of the development of control applications in the grinding process required to achieve a design and implementation of a solution capable of governing the milling process, in addition to stabilization and optimization of both processes (SAG milling and secondary grinding), to integrate from a point of view of process control and automation. Therefore, in the second stage, MPC performance was continuously monitored and optimized through advanced tuning, inclusion of more process models (with proper step tests), redefinition of specific optimization criteria and adjustment to new process needs. Finally, successful MPC implementation at Collahuasi has proved that fast development and deployment of process control solutions is possible and allows immediate process stability, higher throughput, specific energy consumption reduction, and successful product size control, among many others.

Powell Bend Mine, located in Bastrop County, Texas, is owned by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA). The mine is operated under contract by the Powell Bend Mining Company (PBHC), an affiliate of Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Co., and produces 210,000 tons of 6500 BTU/LB lignite per year for LCRA's Fayette Power Project near La Grange, Texas. PBHC operates the surface strip mine one shift per day, five days per week with a total of nine employees; six operations/maintenance and three office/supervision. The mine's productivity in 1988 averaged 100.3 tons per manshift using an l8-cubic yard dragline to uncover the lignite. Delivered cost to LCRA, F.O.B. mine, is $6.11 per ton, which includes water control and final reclamation.

"To meet the requirement of production expanding of a certain potash ore dressing plant in Xinjiang province of China, industrial test of XCF/KYF-50 flotation machine was performed to process potash ore. The tank of XCF/KYF-50 flotation cell is in U shape, 50m3 of volume. This flotation cell is able to suck slurry by itself, and can be arranged on the same base level without high difference. In this paper, two sets of XCF/KYF-50 flotation cells were adopted to replace 8 sets of 8m3 flotation cell in original flow sheet of flotation. Aeration rate, slurry suction capacity, power consumption and slurry suspension are investigated. The measuring results show the slurry suction capacity of the flotation cell is larger than 12.80m3/min and solid particles disperse evenly in the tank without deposition. Industrial test result indicates that the final grade of concentrate is 26.69% at the recovery of 90.95%, which is up to expected performance. XCF/KYF-50 flotation cell has advantages of high flotation efficiency, significant energy saving and reasonable configuration of automatic control system, this kind of flotation cell can meet the requirement of production expanding of this potash ore dressing plant well."

Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-C martensite specimens have been deformed in compression at room temperature and the habit planes of operative deformation twins determined by two-surface optical trace analysis. The full orientations of the martensite crystals were determined from divergent X-ray beam diffraction patterns. The experimental results are in excelled agreement with predicted twinning modes. In particular, the habit planes of some deformation twins in bcc martensites are consistent with a "Type XI compound'' twinning mode with Kl, Kz, 71, 77~ elements given by {5, 8, 11) {ioi}, (33) (ill) Tetragonal derivatives of this mode are operative in bct martensites. UnUSUAL deformation twinning modes have been reported by Richman' to occur in Fe-Ni-C martensites with bcc and bct structures. The twin habit planes were determined by single-surface trace analysis (pole locus method) and the remaining twinning elements were determined from the geometry of twin-twin intersections. The indices assigned to the observed habit planes are (3 101, "(089)" and "{0, 1,13)" or "{1,2,7} ", and only in the first case do the twinning elements correspond to a predicted twinning mode. This is mode 1.4 in the paper by Bevis et al. The results presented in Ref. 2 indicate that previously unpublished bcc and bct modes should be operative in preference to the (130) mode and anomalous modes reported by Richman. In view of these results and the uncertainties involved in determining habit planes from single-surface trace analysis and twinning elements from twin-twin intersections5 a two-surface trace analysis of deformation twins in Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-C martensites has been carried out. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Two alloys with compositions Fe-23 pct Ni-0.6 pct C and Fe-30.4 pct Ni were prepared from 4N pure materials by induction melting under a vacuum of 10"5 mm Hg. The alloys were homogenized at 1350'~ for 5 days. Both of these alloys are austenitic at room temperature with M, temperature - — 50"C. The aus-tenite grain size of the Fe-Ni-C alloy was approximately 300 to 400 p. The Fe-Ni alloy was remelted in a vertical tube furnace and the melt lowered slowly from the hot zone of the furnace to produce s ingle -crystal austenite specimens. Specimens approximately 10 by 5 by 5 mm were cut from the ingots and quenched to various temperatures below the Ms temperature. The specimens were elec-tropolished in a 10 pct perchloric acetic electrolyte before being deformed in compression at room temperature. Martensite plates which exhibited profuse deformation twinning were selected for analysis and the specimen polished on a second surface such that the two surfaces which contained the martensite plate enclosed an obtuse angle of approximately 145 deg. The specimens were then electropolished to reveal the traces of the deformation twins on both surfaces. The full orientations of the martensite crystals were determined using a divergent X-ray beam technique (Kossel line technique) employing an AEI SEM2 electron probe microanalyzer. Details of this technique which include a detailed description of the Kossel camera attachment to the microanalyzer used in the present experiments have been discussed elsewhere.3 Only additional details relevant to this investigation are discussed here. The specimens were mounted with one surface normal to the incident electron beam as illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. The martensite plates to be analyzed were located using the normal scanning equipment of the microanalyzer. The position of the electron beam and hence the position of the source of divergent X-rays generated within the crystal could be located to within 1 p. Exposure times of approximately 8 to 10 min were required for back-reflection Kossel patterns and it was found that useful diffraction patterns could be obtained consistently from heavily deformed martensite plates. A reference line (carbon contamination mark) produced on the two surfaces of the specimen by scanning the electron beam in a direction having a known relationship with the reference !ine in the X-ray camera enabled the full orientation of the crystals to be determined. ONE OF the major sources of the world's supply of asbestos lies in a belt of ultrabasic rocks stretching through the Eastern Townships of Quebec where chrysotile asbestos has been mined continuously since 1878. The productive portion of the belt extends from the town of Asbestos in Shipton town-ship northeastward some 60 miles to the eastern edge of Broughton town-ship. (See map). Twelve mines, currently treating an aggregate of over 60,000 tons of rock daily, produce more than one million tons of asbestos :annually. An equal number of mines are now dormant, having for the most part exhausted their reserves. It is evident from the past and present activity, in this belt that it can look forward to at least half a century or more of large scale production. Few people realize the tremendously important part that Saline and Pulaski Counties in central Arkansas have played in the winning of the war The present favorable war situation might have been very different if we had not had the bauxite produced during the past two years from these two small areas, a total Of about 15 square miles. As a general statement, it can be said that the Arkansas bauxite deposits are, individually, relatively small, irregular in thickness, somewhat scattered and, therefore, compared with coal or iron-ore or open-pit copper deposits, relatively ill adapted to a rapid and drastic expansion in output. A few years ago it would have seemed an impossibility for these two counties to produce over six million long dry tons of bauxite in one year. However, with the cooperation of the operators, that is what happened in 1943, when the state of Arkansas achieved the seemingly impossible with a production of 6,020,684 1 long tons (dried equivalent) of bauxite ore during the calendar year, compared with an average annual production of 323,7252 tons in the period 1931 to 1941. It became apparent early in the year '94' that the united States soon might be drawn into the war, and, therefore, that an immediate study of the domestic metal situation was necessary. Aluminum is by far the most important metal used in the manufacture of aircraft and many other implements of war and it was evident that there would have to be a tremendous increase in the domestic production of bauxite, which is practically the only present source of this metal. AS more than 95 per cent of the known bauxite reserves of the United states was in Arkansas, careful preliminary studies were made in that state by representatives of the united States Bureau of Mines, the United States Geological survey and the War Production Board in the summer of 1941 Reserves in other states also were studied. The result of these studies was a recommendation by the War Production Board that mining in the bauxite.producing areas of Arkansas be geared for maximum production, in order to supply sufficient ore for this country's war requirements and, if necessary, to supply the war needs of Canada as well. The annual goal of eight million long tons (dry weight) set for Arkansas by the war Production Board was exceeded in 1943, when in August the output reached a rate equivalent to more than 8,300,000 long tons, dry basis. Because of the comparatively small tonnage of bauxite reserves, Congress appropriated funds for an extensive drilling program to be carried out by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey. Drilling began in May 1942 but owing to delay in delivery of drills, and trucks upon which the drills were mounted the program did not get into peak operation until early in 1943. By the end of July 1944, the Bureau of Mines records indicated an addition to the Arkansas reserves of 10,000,000 long tons (wet basis) in place,

At the International Society of Explosives Engineers Annual Conference held in Nashville, Tennessee in February 1995, a Seismograph Standards Committee was established. The purpose of this committee was to develop objective performance specifications for vibration measurement instrumentation and field use practices. It was also understood that due to geology, temperature, and moisture in the soils, it is not possible to design and build an instrument to give results which are absolutely comparable for ground vibration. It was, however, considered essential to standardize instrumentation by which vibration can be measured under closely defined conditions so that results obtained by users of seismographs are always the same within stated tolerances.

A metal or alloy finds its place in commerce in proportion to its ability to serve certain purposes better and more economically than other materials. While there is some overlapping of the fields of application of the various metals under discussion in this symposium, each one has its uses for which it is especially adapted. While aluminum is the most recent of the metals to enter the field, the development of the industry has been based on its peculiar properties, by virtue of which new uses for non-ferrous metals have been created. There has been substitution of this new metal for other members of the group but there has been a far greater development in entirely new fields. In common with the other non-ferrous metals, aluminum is resistant to atmospheric corrosion. It also withstands the action of many of the common chemical reagents, strongly alkaline substances being the notable exceptions. The outstanding properties on which the application of aluminum is based are its low specific gravity and its ease of fabrication into the forms in which it is used. It is noteworthy that this property of specific lightness is retained in all the commercial aluminum-base alloys. This statement does not apply to aluminum bronze; this is more properly a copper-base alloy, since aluminum enters into its composition to the extent of only about 10 per cent. None of the commercial casting alloys of aluminum has a density exceeding that of the parent metal by more than about 10 per cent., and some are actually lighter. In the so-called "strong alloys" of aluminum in which strengths comparable to that of mild steel are developed by heat treatment, the greatest increase in density is only slightly more than 3 per cent., and one of these, also, is lighter than aluminum. This property of lightness combined with the desirable mechanical properties of the alloys, makes aluminum especially suited for parts of moving assemblies where saving in power, as well as a decrease in stresses resulting from inertia and vibration, are of importance.
