An innovative biological treatment system designed to detoxify cyanide and nitrate and immobilize metals from cyanide leach operations is described. A pilot-plant demonstration was conducted to detoxify cyanide and immobilize several metals from a process stream at the McCoy/Cove Mine. Testing was performed under the EPA’s Mine Waste Technology and Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation Demonstration Programs. This technology was successful in detoxifying cyanide and effective in removing metals. The pH was consistently neutralized and nitrates were successfully removed. Results show that biological treatment can offer an innovative, cost-effective alternative for the treatment of mining wastewaters.

The potential for the utilization solar energy for the production of industrial process steer in mineral processing industries is discussed briefly. To advance the technical and economic feasibility of solar-thermal systems applications, U.S. Department of Energy has funded several projects. NL industries of Newberry Springs, California is one among them and has been chosen as a case study. The NL Industries solar system consists of 950 square meters of Del, single-axis, tracking, parabolic-trough, concentrating collectors. It was designee to produce a portion of the 420°. 530°k. steam utilized in a trying operation reduce the moisture content of hectorite ore from 10 percent to 4 percent. (Hectorite is an hydrous magnesium silicate which, when refined, is of significant commercial interest because of its applications in various chemical and food processes.) is estimated that implementation or this solar system could result an annual savings of 3.545 billion KJ ,3.360 billion BTUs), or the equivalent of 90 cubic meters (600 barrels) of oil and a net reduction of 1,860 kilograms (4100 pounds) of air pollutants annually. The technical, economic and institutional issues encountered in the course of this project are also discussed. Finally, the impact of the commercialization of solar energy applications in mineral processing industries is evaluated.

Computer analysis, modelling and optimization of gold recovery plants of the Anglo American Group by M. I. BRITTAN M.Sc. (Eng.), M.S., Ph. D., (Member). and E. J. J. van VUUREN M.Sc., (Visitor). Multiple correlation and regression techniques are used to analyse gold plant operating records. Key variables m the process which Influence the gold recovery are Identified and assembled into a mathematical model. This constitutes a valuable tool for the optimisation of variables such as the rates of reagent addition and for assessing the economics of extending the plant. Substantial short term economic benefits have been realized. The techniques provide a rapid diagnostic service without interfering with normal plant operation. Quantitative results are presented and their implications examined. The value of the method is discussed.

In the german hard-coal mining industry the mechanization of longwall faces and the machinery used for the extraction process have reached such an extent, that an extensive increase in productivity and face performance is not likely to be expected. At present, the greatest amount of man-shifts is needed for operations such as tunneling, transportation and haulage (fig. 1.). The most restrictive parameter, especially considering the possible ad- [ ] vance rate of faces, is the comparatively low advance rate achieved in drifting operations. Therefore improvements in productivity and advance rates of drifting operations will have considerable influence onto the extraction rate of the faces. The importance of drifting operations - and especially the so-called "conventional drifting by drilling and blasting" within the scope of long- term planning strategy of the german hard-coal mining industry is reflected by the development factor. This factor is given by the ratio: cubic meters of rock excavated in drifting per 1.000 tons saleable coal produced. In 1973, which is considered to be the beginning of the oil-crisis, this factor was determined to be 17.7 m3/ 1.000 tons sale- able coal.

INTRODUCTION At the time the 4th edition of this book was published in 1979, the coal industry had experienced a sharp upturn in prices for its product. From 1950 throgh 1969, steam coal prices had held almost flat at about $5 US per st (about $5.50/t). Thus, when considering the effects of inflation, the price of coal had actually been declining for two decades. The passage of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act in 1969 and its cost effects started an upward trend in coal prices which was rapidly accelerated by the effects of the Mid-East oil embargo in 1972. Prices of steam coal on the spot market eventually climbed to over $30 US per st ($33/t) and higher in some cases. Metallurgical coal prices skyrocketed in a similar manner and the industry at long last appeared assured of an adequate return on investment. Many companies did expend large sums of money to upgrade and expand their mining and preparation facilities. Unfortunately the bubble eventually burst, in great measure due to the downturn in the US domestic steel industry and the resultant decline in metallurgical coal demand, loss of export markets to other nations and even imports of large amounts of foreign coal to the United States, and more stringent environmental regulations which made many high sulfur coal measures uneconomical to mine. Compounding the problem was the rapid world decline in oil prices in the mid-1980s which encouraged many consumers to utilize oil rather than coal. During the 1980s, metallurgical coal dropped over 20% in price, which, when considering inflation, actually amounted to about a 40% decrease in value. Export coal decreased a similar amount in price. Steam coal prices held nearly constant, thus also losing considerable value when inflation is considered. All of these factors make it even more imperative than ever that the industry do everything in its power to make wise economic decisions and to examine carefully all existing operations and planned future expenditures to be certain that their full cost implications are understood and that they can be justified on the basis of an adequate return on investment. It cannot be assumed that the price of coal will increase. To the contrary, as indicated previously, when considering inflation, coal decreased in value in the 1980s, just as it also did in the 1950s and 1960s. The price surges in the 1970s merely were a catchup game, and in truth the true market value of coal is in reality even lower than it was in 1950. "The effect of La2O3 content up to 15 wt% on phase stability, sintering and microstructure of cubic zirconia (8YSZ) was investigated. XRD results showed that the specimens containing up to 15 wt% La2O3 were composed of only cubic structure. Also, the specimens doped up to 5 wt% La2O3 revealed no La2O3 peaks, indicating that La2O3 was completely solubilized in the cubic structure. However, when> 5 wt% La2O3 was added, the peak of La2Zr2O7 compound emerged, showing that the overdoped La2O3 was not solubilized in the 8YSZ matrix. The lattice parameter of the 8YSZ slightly decreased with the increasing La2O3 content up to 1 wt% but further increase in the La203 amount resulted in an increased lattice parameter. The comparison of grain size of the 8YSZ specimens with various La2O3 content showed that grain size slightly increased with the increasing La2O3 content up to 1 wt% but further increase in the La2O3 amount resulted in a decreased grain size.IntroductionAt atmospheric pressures, three polymorphic forms of Zr02 are stable at different temperatures i.e. monoclinic, tetragonal and cubic. A high-pressure orthorhombic form of Zr02 has also been reported[l]. The successful production of pure Zr02 bodies is not possible all the time due to the large volume expansion associated with the martensitic tetragonal-monoclinic transformation. This fact restricts the applications of zirconia, in spite of its excellent mechanical and thermal properties. However, the stabilization of the high temperature polymorphs at room temperature as stable phases is made possible by addition of suitable dopants. Fully stabilized cubic Zr02 and partially stabilized tetragonal Zr02 show interesting properties and are widely used as ionic conductors, coatings and gas sensors in solid oxide fuel cells and structural applications[2]. Most frequently used dopants include Y203, CaO, MgO and Ce02, although other oxides, such as those of rare earth elements, can also act as stabilizers of the high temperature structures. The incorporation of aliovalent cations to the lattice, forming substitutional solid solutions, allows to control the concentration of anionic vacancies in the structure. This aspect is particularly important in designing ionic conductors[3], and is also determinant in the stabilization process[ 4]. The process of stabilization with larger ionic radii dopants is rationalized by the crystal chemistry model[ 5], that describes the dopant cations as typical stabilizer when they have larger ionic size, lower charged state and higher ionicity than Zr4+ The ionic radius of Zr4+ is 0.84 Å and that for La3+ is 1.016 Å [6]."

Many iron ores may respond well to magnetic roasting procedures followed by magnetic concentration, however, in most cases other more standard ore dressing methods are competitive and cheaper. BOTH the foundryman and the theoretical metallurgist are now generally agreed that the anomalous "rising" or "bleeding" of certain ferrous castings of killed metal is primarily attributable to hydrogen. How and why the phenomenon occurs, however, have not been made clear. The following discussion is intended to harmonize foundry experience with metallurgical theory so that the foundryman may possibly improve his ability to prognosticate whether a certain casting may bleed or not. BLEEDING, RISING, AND PIPING The "rising" to be discussed here is not to be confused with the action in rimming ingots as a result of the carbon-oxygen reaction, although a conclusion will be drawn that may apply to the art of controlling the rimming action. Only killed metal is considered, which includes both steels and irons. In Fig. I, three killed, chill-cast ingots are shown: a porous ingot whose evolution of gas during late stages of solidification has ejected metal through the top; an ingot in which moderate gas evolution during solidification has lifted the mushy central metal, i.e., it has "risen"; and, third, a sound ingot with good piping characteristics. The first type is referred to as "bleeding," and generally infers that a solid skin had first formed through which the liquid metal later erupted. There is no fundamental distinction between bleeding and rising in reference to killed metal.* POROSITY Hydrogen appears as a cause of bleeding because the gas evolution simultaneously leaves a porosity of a type traceable to hydrogen. Twenty years ago, Melmoth1 noted that killed steel that rose unexpectedly in the mold, if returned while liquid to the furnace and heated further under a reducing lime slag, would again rise in the mold; but that if the ingot were allowed to solidify and was then remelted no rising occurred. A critical quantity of the responsible gas is therefore removed by the rising action. Melmoth associated rising with high silicon (0.7 to 0.9 per cent) and concluded that silicon increased gas absorption. Because silicon is a strong deoxidizer, oxygen must, therefore, be eliminated from consideration of the three common gases in steel-oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Butterworth2 later decided that pinhole porosity was caused by gases dissolved in the metal and that hydrogen was obtained from steam in the mold. One of the greatest practical difficulties of measuring airblast occurs when a significant wind is blowing onto the microphone. Small windscreens are usually used to mitigate the wind noise on the microphone, but in some wind conditions, sound pressure levels (SPL) of over 120 decibel (linear) are frequently recorded. There are no specific procedures to mitigate the effect of wind noise when measuring airblast in any of the standards or guidelines pertaining to the measurement of airblast from blasting operations, other than the requirement to use an effective windscreen. A search for relevant literature was undertaken and measurements were taken over a period of six months at a test site using alternative microphone measurement methods. Previous researchers’ experiments with windscreens in silenced wind tunnels showed that wind noise can be reduced through the use of large diameter windscreens, and that at low frequencies, the windscreen size and the material type makes no difference to measured SPL values. Other researchers found that wind turbulence caused significant SPL measurement problems. A comparison with field data failed to explain the extremely high SPL recorded by the field microphones at wind velocities much lower than those used in wind tunnel testing. It has been concluded that turbulent airflow over and behind the microphone is a significant contributor to extraneous noise in airblast measurements in windy conditions. This turbulence can be generated by objects upwind of the microphone or by the microphone itself if the windscreen is ineffective. Reducing the wind speed over the microphone by placing it on the ground is the approach required by the international standard for the measurement of noise from wind turbine generators (IEC 61400–11). This paper presents data that illustrates the extent of the problem, reports on the trial of three different microphone mounting locations for measuring airblast from blasting and concludes that in windy conditions, microphones placed on the ground substantially avoid wind problems and do not reduce the measured SPL of the airblast.CITATION:Henley, K, 2015. History.—The history of gold-mining in Georgia and Alabama antedates the discovery of gold in California. A very large proportion of the gold used in the United States previous to 1849 was produced by these States. A great deal of this history is merely tradition, and no reliable statistics can be obtained ; yet a personal examination of the gold-fields of Georgia and Alabama indicates that tradition is as fairly reliable, with regard to the history of these gold-regions, as it is in any similar cases throughout the world. In Georgia, the history of gold-mining dates back to 1829, when the first gold-mining excitement in the United States occurred. In Alabama, the discovery of gold was made some years later through the work of prospectors, incited by the rich finds in the Georgia mining camps. The greatest product of gold in these States was between the years 1840 and 1849. In Lumpkin county, Ga., and Cleburne county, Ala., the districts from which the most of this gold was taken, the tailing-dumps are silent witnesses of the extensive operations which were carried on by the primitive and crude methods then known. The solid inclusion cell for absolute in situ stress measurement has been found to give reliable results in coal. The cell is described briefly, along with the methods of installing, overcoring and taking readings in underground coal mines. The validity of the cell performance is demonstrated by reference to the stress-relief curves obtained during overcoring and a three-dimensional B.I.E.M. analysis of the installation to test for stress anomalies deriving from the geometry of the overcoring groove-borehole-cell arrangement. Case studies of two stress measurement projects using the cell are presented for coal mines in New South Wales, Australia.

Lying approximately 110 miles east of Toronto, Canada, the Marmora mine produces iron ore with a content of about 40 pct Fe, primarily in the form of magnetite. Operated by the Marmoraton Mining Co., a subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Co., the orebody is mined by open pit methods. The ore from the pit is crushed, cobbed, ground to -100 mesh, magnetically concentrated to 67 pct iron, and then pelletized in shaft furnaces. The pellets are normally shipped by rail throughout the year from Marmora to Picton on Lake Ontario where they are unloaded and stored. Subsequently, during the navigation season, the pellets are shipped to Bethlehem Steel's Lackawanna plant in Buffalo, New York, for use in the blast furnace. At Marmora, the pellet plant demand and the concentrator output are not usually equal. To counter this problem, surge capacity in the form of storage pits in combination with a 30-ft diam thick¬ener has been provided between the concentrator and the pellet plant. Planar solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) offer great promise as stationary power generation devices, primarily due to their flexibility in terms of fuels, high energy conversion efficiency (when both electricity and heat are captured), and their relatively low fabrication costs. However, the anode performance can be compromised by such factors as exposure to certain sulfur-containing fuels and the deposition of coke when using hydrocarbon fuels. In terms of the cathode, its performance is limited primarily by the slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction, while its lifetime can be negatively affected by factors related to the corrosion of currently used stainless steel interconnect materials. This talk will present an overview of these challenges and some possible solutions to these problems. The presentation will also focus on how electrochemical methods can be used to evaluate and improve the performance of SOFC anodes, cathodes, and interconnect materials. In addition, recent promising research efforts directed towards performance enhancement of SOFCs through the use of nanoscale electrocatalysts will be discussed.

Based on previous Bureau of Mines research indicating that improved high-temperature properties could be achieved for periclase refractories through chemical additions, the Bureau investigated the properties of full-size bricks produced from chemically modified periclase refractory grains and the suitability of making such chemical additions to Mg(OH)2 slurries prior to production of the periclase grains. In full-size brick testing, strength values, both hot and cold, for the optimized bricks were superior to those for a commercial 98-wt-pct-MgO refractory. The best results were obtained for a natural magnesite with an adjusted CaO:Si02 (C:S) ratio of 3.0 and a 1.0-wt-pct addition of Zr02 and for a seawater periclase with an adjusted C:S ratio of 2.5 and a 0.5-wt-pct addition of Mn02. For samples produced from chemically modified Mg(OH)2 slurries, additions of both Mn02 and Zr02 and an increase in C:S ratios produced significant increases in hot flexural strength, similar to those resulting from chemical additions made to periclase grains. The most effective modifications were additions of Mn02 to brine-derived periclases having a C:S ratio adjusted to 3.0. These results on chemically modified magnesia refractories indicate that such material could potentially substitute for magnesiachrome refractories containing imported chromite.

Thorite and rare earth deposits in the Lemhi Pass area of southeastern Lemhi County, Idaho, are contained along complex shear and fracture zones and in reopened gold-quartz veins and copper lodes in quartzitic and phyllitic rocks of the Pre-cambrian belt series. Some of the shear and fracture zones are several tons of feet across and comprise broad zones of irregularly mineralized rock. These lodes contain a notable concentration of thorium and rare earth elements along with considerable amounts of barium, .potassium, calcium, iron, aluminum, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. The principal minerals are thorite, locally allanite, monazite, xenotime (?), apatite, specular hematite, barite, potash feldspar, occasionally calcite and quartz. Exept for some of 'the specular hematite, barite, reddish feldspar, calcite and quartz, the minerals are not distinguishable without the microscope. The thorite and locally allanite were deposited first, then the monazite and other phosphates, which were in turn followed successively by barite, potash, feldspar, calcite, and quartz. In exceptional cases, deposition of thorite and specular hematite was repeated after the feldspar. Some of the deposits contain several percent thoria, but the average os generally under one percent. The rare earth content is comparable with that of the thoria. The deposits appear to be of hydrothermal origin and are probably related genetically to late Cretaceous or early Tertiary igneous activity, manifested locally by a few dioritie and lamprophyric dikes.

A review of blast designs and improved blasting practices at the Ekati??Diamond Mine is presented along with the results of three blast-monitoring experiments. Blast monitoring was undertaken to investigate blast damage mechanisms in the mine's well jointed rock mass. Rock mass damage caused by production, pre-shear and wall control blasts was measured. Ekati??uses 270mm holes for production blasting, and 165mm holes loaded with a decoupled charge for pre-shearing. The production blasts are loaded with bulk emulsion / ANFO blends. The mine plan involves using 30m double benches. A 30m high pre-shear is drilled and blasted prior to the production blasting that is done with sequential 15m benches. This paper summarizes the monitoring equipment and data gathered to date.

High-energy product permanent-magnet materials of rare-earth cobalt alloys are being used in applications where space or weight are at a premium cost. New applications like friction-free bearings are also made possible. However, such magnet materials have not been commercially used in magnetic separators until now due to the high cost for the overall magnetic flux generation relative to commonly used ceramic magnets or AlNiCo magnets. The design of the new high-intensity permanent- magnet roll separator (PERMROLL) takes advantage of the unique properties of rare-earth cobalt magnets rather than just substituting for conventional magnet materials now in use for magnetic separators. Hence, the new generation of high-intensity magnetic-roll separators has some unusual characteristics that make known magnetic separation applications more economically attractive, and even expands the magnetic separation technology area to include applications for which no other feasible methods are presently known.

I have heard it said that the late Mr. Holley made use of this remark: " There is an inherent, cussedness about rolls which, so far, no man has been able to find out." I think this can be safely claimed in reference to steel, as there are certain peculiarities about it that are pretty hard to account for. Previous to the introduction of the Bessemer process there was, as it were, a great chasm between iron and crucible steel; and, outside of what futile attempts had been made in puddling steel, nothing had been done to fill this gap. The Bessemer steel struck a medium between the two, the softest of it not being able to take the place of good iron, while the hardest was not suitable to encroach very far upon the crucible-steel trade. The open-hearth process made quite an inroad into the latter, but only for the lower and cheaper grades; and, beyond a doubt, for the finest grades of tool-steel, the cruciblesteel business has a long life before it. On the other side of the line comes the " basic " process, which brings us a step nearer iron ; but to fill up the gap completely, comes the Clapp-Griffiths process, which makes a grade of material—call it what you will—that is as soft as iron, welds as readily, and is in a fair way to supersede iron altogether. After shotcrete had been in use for a short time al the Climax Mine of the Climax Molybdenum Co., Climax, Colo., it was noted that regular longhole undercutting blasts would severely damage or detach slusher drift shotcrete linings. If this were to be a usual occurrence, the widespread application of shotcrete would have to be reexamined or abandoned. Concrete drift linings are affected less by blasting because of occasional significant gaps between the placed concrete and rock and the greater thickness of poured-in-place linings. AngloGold Ashanti has been proactive in the field of energy management for many years. AngloGold Ashanti is a signatory to South Africa?s National Energy Accord of 2005 calling for a15% reduction in energy consumption by 2015 for the mining sector. This target also supported our internal targets that were already set. AngloGold Ashanti?s seven South African mines consume on average 440 MW. Due to the dynamics of gold mines, and the large numbers of relatively small energy efficiency initiatives and awareness campaigns made measurement and verification of energy efficiency very difficult at a macro level since some initiatives could get lost in the fluctuating load profile. This paper will discuss the methodology and process followed to quantify the impacts of the combined energy efficiency initiatives at macro level. It will quantify the energy efficiency impacts in megawatt-hours (MWh), financial, and equivalent carbon emissions (CO2e) reduction with reference to our baseline year, 2004, for the Vaal River and West Wits mine clusters.
