Estimation of gas holdup from electrical conductivity measurements has been used in lab and industrial installations. The approach is based on the application of Maxwell's model, which relates the concentration of a dispersed phase in a continuous medium to measurements of the electrical conductivity of the dispersed phase, continuous medium and the resulting mixture (dispersion). When applied to inferring the collection zone gas holdup in a three phase system and to facilitate real-time on-line measurement, the slurry is assumed to behave as the continuous medium and gas bubbles as a nonconducting dispersed phase. This article derives an equation for estimating gas holdup in a three phase system, eliminating the assumption that the slurry behaves as a continuous medium but rather as a dispersion of non-conducting solid particles in water. In this formulation only water behaves as the continuous medium in the sense of Maxwell, and gas holdup in a three phase system is then calculated from the application of the Maxwell model twice: (1) to determine solid content in a two-phase system, and (2) to determine solid plus gas holdup in a three phase system. To validate the new equation and quantify the errors incurred by assuming slurry is the continuous phase a laboratory flotation cell was instrumented to continuously measure the conductivity of two and three phase dispersions with known solids contents. As the amount of gas in a lab flotation machine is difficult to measure directly or by another indirect technique such as using pressure signals, 2.5 mm dielectric plastic spheres having a density of ca. 1.3 g/cm3 were used instead of air bubbles for validation. Experimental results demonstrated that the continuous medium assumption underestimates gas holdup and that the resulting bias error increases linearly with the solid content and decreases with the magnitude of gas holdup.

Although thermodynamic data for ferrous oxide are among the most important in extractive metallurgy, adequate values have not been available until quite recently. The older data suffered not only from the usual experimental difficulties but especially from lack of the knowledge that ferrous oxide of stoichiometrical composition does not exist as a single, thermodynamically stable crystalline phase under any circumstances. This paper reports new experimental data on the heat of formation of ferrous oxide by two methods (combustion calorimetry and solution calorimetry), employing material of unequivocal composition. The results are compared with values obtained from data for the hydrogen reduction, carbon monoxide reduction, and disproportionation reactions of ferrous oxide, and a best value is selected. A table of heat and free energy of formation values of ferrous oxide to 2,000°K is given. These values are combined with available data for water, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide to obtain theoretical heats and free energies of reduction corresponding to the selected heat of formation. Hydrogen and carbon monoxide reduction equilibria are compared, and the differences in trend with temperature and the percentage utilization of the reductants are considered.

An experimental study of the packing of a coal heap has been carried out. The bulk density of a coal heap is considered as a function of a number of variables, viz flow rate, conveyor belt speed, the height of the disengagement point of the conveyor belt, coal particle density, moisture content, the size of the heap and coal particle size distribution. The effects of the dimensionless numbers resulting from dimensional analysis on the packing density of a coal heap have been experimentally examined and analysed. Based on the experimental results, equations have been formulated for the estimation of the bulk density of a coal stockpile. The validity of these equations are checked by comparing the predictions with measurements of real industrial Stockpiles.

Surface mining refers to the process of removing the material (over- burden) overlying a coal seam and exposing the coal so that it can be loaded out and conveyed by trucks or other methods to the preparation plant or other facility. Surface mining has not always been important in the coal industry. In the early 1900s, almost all of the coal mined in the United States was mined by underground methods. In 1900, about 192 Mt (212 million st) of bituminous coal were mined and less than 1% was mined by surface methods. The development and use of larger equipment has allowed surface mining to gain prominence throughout the years. Table 1 shows the total production of coal by mining method in the United States for ten-year periods since 1920 and indicates the growth of surface-mined coal production. Surface mining will undoubtedly continue to account for a large percentage of the coal production in the US for many years because: 1) The capacity of surface mining excavators has continued to increase. Today, mining companies are using shovels (see Fig. 1) which are able to move up to 137.6 m3 (180 cu yd) in each bite and draglines (see Fig. 2) which move up to 168.2 m3 (220 cu yd) in each bucketful. 2) Increasing tonnage from the thick western coal seams is being produced by surface mining methods. 3) Surface mining has normally had lower costs and a better safety record than underground mining; 4) Surface mining normally recovers a- much higher percentage of the coal reserve than can be recovered by underground mining. 5) Some coal measures can best be extracted by surface mining [ ] methods because of geologic reasons such as the nature of the roof or bottom, thickness of the seam, multiple bedding, etc.

A4ost gas twells and flowing oil wells are completed and treated through a string of tubing and a packer. Changes in temperature and in pressure inside or outside the tubing will: (I) if free motion of the tubing inside the packer is permitted, increase or decrease the length of the rubing; or (2) if free motion is prevented, induce forces in the tubing and on the packer. If pressure inside the tubing is greater than outside, the tubing may buckle helically even in the presence of a packer-to-tubing tension. The tubing will always buckle, and much more severely, if free motion is permitted. The buckling may be prevented by pulling the tubing in sufficient tension. The prediction of these forces and tubing movement has here to fore been based upon calculations that did not inciude helical buckling. This paper preseitts means with which these length or force changes can be calculated while taking into account the effect of helical buckling. To avoid damaging formations, failure of remedial operations, or damage to the tubing or packer, application is made to practical problems involving calculations of the required length of seals, amount of sluckoff or tension, and prevention of permanent corkscrewing. INTRODUCTION Leakage of a packer may result in costly failures of such operations as squeeze cementing, hydraulic fracturing, etc. To avoid such failures, the authors are often asked questions pertaining to the length of necessary seals, the amount of necessary slackoff, etc. Published work' does not take into account helical buckling of tubing. Investigation of helical buckling was prompted by the fact that allowance must be made for this phenomenon in order to provide relevant answers. In the past, theoretical work on helical buckling was confined to conditions for which such buckling does not The mathematical treatment of behavior in a buckled condition, given in the Appendix, is novel. Assumptions upon which this investigation is based are listed and discussed in a special section. The following are a few of the many kinds of problems which may be solved with this paper. 1. Consider a packer in which tubing may move. Such movement will occur after pressures and temperature are changed. The paper provides means for: (a) calculating the amount of such movement and, therefore. the required length of seals; and (b) calculating the necessary amount of initial slackoff, for which there is no danger of unsealing the packer, if the length of seals is given. Such calculations, as well as those which follow, tully take into account the fact that part of the movement ib due to elastic helical buckling of the lower part of the string. This buckling may occur even in tubing under tension. Insufficient initial slackoff for a given length of seals, or insufficient length of seals for a given slackoff, may result in costly failures. A field case of such a failure will be given further in this paper. 2. In the case in which tubing cannot move in the packer, changes of pressure and temperature result in tubing-to-packer forces and forces in the tubing above the packer, both of which may be calculated. This knowledge is important because, if these forces are too large, the) could damage the packer or the tubing. 3. For wells in which wireline tools are to be run through the tubing, the paper provides means to keep the tubing from buckling, thereby permitting free passage of tools. 4. In deep wells, mainly in the presence of large casing, tubing may become "corkscrewed", i.e., take a permanent helical set. A field case is described further in the text. Using this paper, one may calculate in advance conditions under which permanent corkscrewing would occur, and then take preventive steps. HELICAL BUCKLING Consider a string of tubing, freely suspended in the absence of any fluid inside casing, as shown in Fig. I(a). Now consider an upward force F applied at the lower end of this tubing. This force compresses the string; and if the compression is large enough (which is always the case in actual problems), the lower portion of the string will buckle into a helix, as shown in Fig. 1 (b). "Because of the similar crystal structure and surface properties, it is very difficult to realize the efficient separation of magnesite and dolomite by flotation, which is the main reason restricting the utilization of magnesite resources with dolomite symbiotic. To deal with a magnesite resources with high content of calcium impurity in northwest China, a novel decalcification technology by combining flotation with leaching is proposed in this paper. In flotation process, a novel flotation collector with good efficiency and low temperature resistance was developed, and the depression effect of sodium hexametaphosphate was investigated. In leaching process, the leaching rate difference of calcium and magnesium was observed. By industrial test, from the magnesite ore with MgO content of 43.96%,the grade and recovery of obtained concentrate ( calculated by MgO) are 47.28% and 67.68% respectively, at the same time, CaO content decreases from 3.91% to 0.30%, which means that more than 95% of CaO impurity is removed.INTRODUCTIONMagnesite is one of the main raw materials for the production of refractory materials, and it is widely used in metallurgy, chemicals, ceramic, construction and other industries. China is the most important supplier of highquality magnesite resources, accounting for about 60-70% of the world's identified supply of magnesite products is provide by China (Jewell, 2014). In recent years, high-quality magnesite ores can be directly used are going to run out in China, and the utilization of magnesite resources with high impurity content have drawn more attention.The main purpose of purification for magnesite is to remove SiO2 and CaO impurities which affects the strength of the refractory material. Flotation is the commonly used method to remove impurities in magnesite ore. Reverse flotation with cationic collector is usually adopted to remove silicon containing impurities, and a great deal of literature has been reported (Santana A. N. and Peres A. E. C., 2001; Wang and Sun, 2008; Zhu et al, 2014; Wu et al, 2015; Ivan B. et al, 2017). But when the major gangue component is dolomite, it is very difficult to realize the efficient separation due to the similar crystal structure and surface properties between magnesite and dolomite. To solve this problem, researches have studied the surface properties of magnesite and dolomite, such as wettability, electrical property, solubility and solution chemistry (Nermin and Nurgul, 2006; Nermin 2006; Ozbek and Abali, 1999; Lacin et al, 2005; Bayrak et al, 2006; Bakan et al, 2006; Chen G. and Tao D., 2004), but the commonly studied direct flotation using oleic acid as collector is still hard to receive an ideal effect."

Over one million yards of granite were excavated for the Helms Pumped Storage Project, including a large underground powerhouse complex. Site investigations and in situ stress measurements were essential elements of the project design and provided the necessary geologic parameters for executing a finite element study of the powerhouse. A construction monitoring program, of geologic mapping, field instrumentation, and rock mechanics testing was then designed and has been successfully implemented. This paper reports on the scope of this construction monitoring program and explicitly compares the measured deformations to those predicted. As a result of this recent field experience the assumptions used in the finite element program are reexamined.

Underground water is part of a continuing hydrologic cycle, which involves all elements of water occurrence. All groundwater of economic importance is in process of movement through a porous rock stratum from a place of intake or recharge to a place of disposal. Groundwater moves and is contained in fractures in the rock and/or in intergranular spaces of porous formations. Where there have been no water developments by man, groundwater is in a state of approximate equilibrium and the forces of replenishment and discharge are in balance. Thus, groundwater, unlike other mineral resources, is constantly being replenished in most areas at a rate which is measurable and which is important in the planning of its utilization. As illustrated by Figure 1, replenishment of groundwater supplies results from the direct penetration of rainfall through the soil to the water table, by seepage from surface streams or ponds, and/or by subsurface movement from an adjacent groundwater body. Under natural discharge conditions, water is commonly consumed by transpiration of trees and other types of vegetation, by flows from springs, by evaporation from shallow depths below the surface, and seepage into streams that traverse the area.

In 1980, the Bureau of Mines investigated the northern Darby Mountains on the Seward Peninsula, AK, for radioactive mineral deposits. Uranium is concentrated in silicified shear zones in biotite quartz monzonite of the Darby pluton. The shear zones are best exposed in steep, narrow, avalanche gullies; they are characterized by radiometric anomalies and by uranium and thorium geochemical anomalies. Radiometric and geochemical anomalies are also found over altered biotite quartz monzonite where there are no visible shear zones. The radiometric and uranium anomalies are often spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with alkaline mafic and felsic dikes. Similar geochemical and radiometric anomalies over discolored altered zones and geochemical anomalies in sediments downstream from the altered zones indicate that additional areas may also be favorable targets for uranium deposits. Analyses of panned, heavy mineral concentrates show no significant concentrations of uranium or thorium in resistant heavy minerals. This indicates that radioactive elements in the Darby pluton are concentrated in soluble, nonresistant minerals that may constitute a recoverable uranium resource.

This paper describes an experimental method for monitoring diesel-generated exhaust gas pollutants in a deadended drift to assess the effect of control approaches. Experiments were conducted to determine the relative merits of these ventilation configurations: no auxiliary ventilation, induction ventilation at the entrance to the drift, and ventilation of the dead-ended drift with positive displacement tubing. The drift used in this experimental work was approximately 32 m long and slightly downsloping, with an everage height and width of 2.4 and 8.6 m, respectively. For this drift, it was found that ventilation with positive displacement tubing provided the best removal of diesel-generate pollutants. Induction ventilation appeared to be the least effective of the three methods examined.

"An experimental and numerical study of the horizontal Bridgman growth of pure succinonitrile (SCN) and of a succinonitrile-1.0 mol. % acetone alloy (SCN-1.0 mol. % ACE) has been performed. Experiments at growth rates of 0, 2 and 40 µmis were investigated. The solid/liquid interface was stable (non-dendritic and non-cellular); however, it was not flat. Rather, it was significantly distorted by the influence of convection in the melt and, for the growth cases, by the moving temperature boundary conditions along the ampoule. For the alloy, the interface was determined to be unstable at growth rates greater than 2.8 µmis, but stable for the no-growth and 2 µmis growth cases. When compared to the pure SCN interface, the alloy interface forms closer to the cold zone,· indicating that the melting temperature has been suppressed by the addition of the alloying element. Two-dimensional computer simulations were performed for the no-growth case for both the pure and alloy materials. These simulations indicate that a primary longitudinal convective cell is formed in the melt. The maximum magnitude of velocity was calculated to be 1.515 mmls for pure SCN and 1. 724 mm/s for the alloy. The interface shape predicted by the computer simulation agrees well with the experimentally determined shape for the pure SCN case. In ongoing work, numerical simulations of the process during growth conditions are being performed.IntroductionIncreasingly, advanced materials used in the aerospace, automotive, optics and electronics fields require low levels of defects and high levels of solute uniformity. Directional solidification by the Bridgman process is widely used for synthesis of these high-quality materials. During Bridgman crystal growth, heat and mass transfer by both thermal and solutal gradient-driven convection and diffusion influence the shape of the solid/liquid interface and dopant segregation levels, and hence, directly determine the final crystal quality. Key process parameters include the applied furnace temperature distribution and rate of translation, ampoule properties and furnace orientation."

During injection into a die, semi-solid metal alloys exhibit a shear-rate, history-dependent flow response. Simulating the injection of a thixotropic material requires that empirically determined boundary conditions and viscosity are specified as a function of both temperature and shear rate history. Experiments were performed using an industrial die casting machine that was instrumented with sensors to measure the pressure and temperature during the injection of a semi-solid aluminum alloy through a tube. This benchmark experiment was used to develop a simulation of the die casting process that could then be applied to more complex die geometries. The results of the experiments were analyzed using the exact, steady state solution for a power law fluid and simulations accounting for slipping at the boundary between the semi-solid metal and the die. Results indicated that the no-slip condition cannot be used to simulate the velocity boundary condition, because the measured pressure is much lower than that predicted by the models. An estimated apparent slip coefficient was introduced to account for the reduced pressure. During some of the experiments, a sudden drop in the measured pressured, prior to decreasing the ram velocity, coincided with observations of segregation in the form of concentric rings visible on the polished surface of cross-sections cut from material remaining in the tube.

"As ore sorting becomes more common, it is important to quantify its impact on comminution circuits in order to precisely predict its effect on throughput, grind, and mill operating conditions. Since sulphides and other valuable minerals are often softer then the surrounding waste rock, the ore kept by a sorting system is typically softer than the average ore. In order to accurately forecast production, new measurements of hardness need to be performed on the new concentrated mill feed. This paper proposes a methodology to examine this effect quantitatively at an early stage of project development using the SAGDesign test.INTRODUCTION The application of ore sorting in the mining industry is one of the most promising recent technologies with the potential to cause step change in the way concentrators are designed. Most typically, ore sorters are used to sort a given ore flow for grade, either to reject waste from the mill feed, or rescue ore from the waste pile. Ore sorting technologies have been successfully applied at many mining properties in various forms and while the technology has reached or is reaching maturity in other industries, it is still in development in the mining sector. As a result, there is not yet a general consensus on the considerations that need to be made when designing a plant with ore sorting from a feasibility level above and beyond what is commonly performed as best practice. This paper will discuss those considerations and propose a methodology for integrating ore sorting into a comminution circuit at the design phase. Due to the linearly additive nature of the SAGDesign Test results, a “hardness balance” can be developed to estimate the ore hardness which would be measured in any sorting mass split using only two data points. This will allow a design engineer to make more informed decisions as to the most appropriate mass split to select in relation to the incurred operating costs and grinding circuit sizing."

Heavy metal contents in stream waters, sediments, and selected aquatic algae were determined for the upper Meramec River basin, Missouri, of 3905 km2 (1508 sq mi) area and site of the proposed and controversial Meramec dam and reservoir. Six distinct drainage areas within the basin are: (1) a lightly industrialized and farm area, (2) a primitive forested- ranch area, (3) an area which includes the Northern New Lead Belt, (4) the westward drainage of an old and extensive barite mining area, (5) the main trunk of the Meramec River, and (6) short north-divide tributaries of the Meramec River. Lower Paleozoic sediments rest nonconformably upon eroded and hilly Precambrian igneous basement. This locally rises as major inliers and also makes up the St. Francois Mountains to the east. Major lead, and lesser zinc, copper, cobalt, and nickel mineralization occurs in the buried Cambrian Bonneterre dolomite. Residual barite is present along the eastern fringe of the basin and is derived from the Potosi formation. Some 62 water samples, active stream sediments (AS), bank samples (BS), and 11 selected aquatic algae samples were collected in the various drainage areas and analyzed for copper, lead, zinc, cadmium, nickel, arsenic, and mercury contents. Heavy metals in water have a maximum range of 1-120 ppb (parts per billion), and this for zinc. The AS and BS sediments have orders of magnitude greater acid leachable metal contents in the -80 mesh fraction, with lead hawing the greatest range of 11-1028 ppm. Heavy metal content of stream-algae approaches that of the sediments in which they grow. Most anomalous heavy metal accumulations occur near mining and milling activities and in the streams draining such areas. Significant distortions of the primary dispersion pattern militate against geochemical exploration for hidden ore zones, but do demonstrate the mining, milling, and smelting activities of man, and sporadic mineral occurrences in younger horizons.

Maximising shareholder value is a widely stated strategic goal of many mining companies. Mining projects can be capital intensive and achieving good returns is essential to encourage future investment in the industry. Despite the widely accepted importance of shareholder value, the minerals industry is often accused of providing relatively poor returns when compared to other industries. There are many recent and well publicised examples of minerals companies that have failed to deliver value to their shareholders. There are numerous business improvement initiatives employed within the mining industry to assist mine operators improve performance. Some are more effective at creating value than others. Benchmarking is one technique that is commonly used to identify performance gaps and target and prioritise opportunities for improvement. However to be effective, Benchmarking must be used appropriately and result in actions that lead to measurable operational improvement. When conducting a Benchmarking project it is important to remember that the aim should be to improve value. For this to be achieved, the strategic goals must be incorporated into the process. This paper details a structured and comprehensive approach to conducting a successful Benchmarking project. Focusing on Benchmarking as a technique for measuring and improving operational performance in underground mines, the underlying drivers of best practice in underground mining are identified.

The stability of surfactant-free foam films was studied using the thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique. In pure water, it was not possible to produce foam films due to weak film elasticity and strong hydrophobic force. In the presence of NaCl, however, the hydrophobic force was sufficiently dampened to allow metastable films to form. At 10-5 M NaCl, the equilibrium film thickness reached a maximum of approximately 130 nm at pH 6.0-7.3. The thinner films obtained on either side of this pH range was due to the increased ionic strengths associated with the HCl and NaOH additions for pH control.

As a kind of complex physicochemical process, grinding would affect the subsequent mineral processing such as flotation considerably. In this study, the effect of wet grinding on malachite and calcite flotation using sodium oleate as collector was studied. And the mechanism of the effect of grinding was investigated. Laboratory scale grinding and flotation testing of malachite and calcite samples were performed. Different grinding media were used, including steel balls and zirconia balls. It was the aim of this work to study the effect of grinding on the pulp chemistry paying particular attention to flotation recovery. The effect of grinding media and different addition location of sodium oleate on malachite and calcite flotation was studied. The methodology used in this project involved grinding the ore with and without the addition of sodium oleate in mill, measuring the pH and metal ions produced by minerals after grinding, adding various quantities of sodium oleate and determining the copper recovery. The presence of species of products on the minerals after grinding was probed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the metal ions produced by minerals after grinding were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). It is showed that the mil-ling environments evaluated significantly affected the flotation of malachite and calcite. This study also discusses the effecting mechanism of grinding environment on floatability of malachite and calcite.
