Recently, a new approach to controlling alumina feeding in a H.H. cell has been proposed [1, 2 and 3]. This approach, labeled In Situ aluminium cell control, is based on a correlation between the slope of the cell voltage during a no feed observation period and the dissolved alumina concentration in the bath. Once the dissolved alumina concentration has been estimated, a primary calibration surface uniquely relating the dissolved alumina concentration and the anode-cathode-distance (ACD) to the cell voltage is used to estimate the cell ACD. Once both the alumina concentration and the ACD have been estimated at the end of the observation period, a PID controller can be used to regulate the rate of alumina feeding using only the normalized cell voltage to calculate the error between the estimated dissolved alumina concentration and a target value. The In Situ aluminium cell control algorithm has now been tested with the Dyna/Marc [4, 5 and 6] cell simulator demonstrating that it should be possible to control a H.H. cell in this manner with less variation in the dissolved alumina concentration and other process variables producing a prediction of improved cell current efficiency and power efficiency.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health1 (NIOSH), together with employees from The Doe Run Company, are monitoring and evaluating the stability of a pillar retreat section at the Fletcher Mine, a lead/zinc, room-and-pillar mine near Bunker, MO. Cemented rockfill is being used to provide roof support as high-grade, remnant ore pillars are mined. Earth pressure cells and deformation meters placed in backfill panel pillars monitor stress change and vertical deformation, respectively, as nearby ore-bearing pillars are extracted. Similarly, biaxial stressmeters and borehole extensometers are used to monitor mining-induced stress change and deformation, respectively, in long-term support pillars. Data from these instruments indicate that when ore-bearing pillars were mined, stress was redistributed from support pillars to a backfill panel pillar. The data also indicate that the backfill and support pillars have remained stable for two years after pillar extraction was completed in the area. This research demonstrates the importance of using reliable instruments to document the geomechanical behavior of pillars and backfill. Gaining a better understanding of roof support and stress redistribution mechanisms is a fundamental part of NIOSH's goal to reduce and/or predict rockfalls, which are still among the leading causes of injuries in metal/nonmetal underground mines.

THE object of most size reduction operations in the mineral industry is to liberate the grains of valuable minerals in the ore from those of the gangue. This is usually accomplished by crushing and grinding the entire mass of ore until there is only a small probability that any single particle contains more than one mineral. During this size reduction only limited control exists over size or composition of the particles exposed to the breaking action, and there is no control over the paths followed by cracks generated during the operation. This lack of control usually results in overgrinding and in production of large quantities of very fine material. The first detriment, overgrinding, is costly in itself, but when combined with the second factor it is doubly so. Not only is the fracture of a free particle unnecessary-the fracture of these particles may also make subsequent separation operations difficult, inefficient, and wasteful. It has been pointed out' that if the object of size reduction is to liberate the valuable mineral component of the ore then, ideally, fracture should follow intergranular paths to the exclusion of trans- granular ones. This would result in liberation of the valuable minerals with as little size reduction as possible. This ideal comminution operation is referred to as intergranular comminution, and it was the object of the investigation to determine the extent to which it could be developed by heat treatments.

"INTRODUCTION Steel sets such as H-type and lattice girders are often installed in the tunnels before the hardening of shotcrete to ensure the stability of conventional tunnels in soft ground conditions. In practice, while designing the tunnels with the help of numerical analysis, steel sets are generally considered only as temporary support elements. Only a few studies propose the direct application of composite support in the tunnel design, based on large-scale experiments and numerical analysis. In order to assess the structural performance of the composite support consisting of shotcrete and steel sets, large-scale experiments were performed on two types of arch-shaped specimens by applying the combined effects of axial forces and bending moments. Based on the experimental results, numerical analysis was performed to assess the application of composite support in tunnel design. The crown settlement, axial forces, bending moments, and load distribution in the composite support were analyzed in the light of different structural patterns. LARGE-SCALE EXPERIMENTS USING COMPOSITE SUPPORT Preparation and Procedure of the Experiments The preparation setup as well as the organized procedure of the large-scale experiments using composite support is shown in Figure 1. An appropriate geometry of the specimens was selected by considering the standard cross-section of a two-lane highway tunnel in South Korea. Under the loading conditions meant to develop the axial forces and bending moments simultaneously, arch-shaped specimens were assembled with the ends of the specimens subtending a 60° arc angle at the center of the arc circle as shown in Figure 2. The fabrication of six specimens was completed in two groups based on the dimensions of steel sets, with the first group of three specimens being reinforced by H100 (No.1, No.2, No.3) and the other three by H125 (No.4, No.5, No.6). In order to reduce the voids on the boundary of the shotcrete and steel sets, concrete was casted over the steel sets instead of using shotcrete. The specimens were designed to incorporate the uniaxial compressive strength of 21 MPa. Shear keys and steel plates were installed at the ends of the specimens, so that shear failure could be avoided at the ends and the specimens could also be protected from detachment at the fixation. Translational and rotational movements at the ends of specimens were fixed."

Diesel engine particulate matter pollution is a matter of concern currently in underground mines worldwide. A number of real-time Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) monitors have been developed in recent years; two of these by the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) in the US. One, the D-PDM, is based on an adaption of the successful NIOSH?s Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) unit which is being taken up very successfully for mine respirable dust monitoring. The D-PDM measures all particulate matter within a sub-micron range as classified nominally at 0.8 micrometers by a purpose developed cyclone. The other, the FLIR Airtec, measures the Elemental Carbon (EC) component of DPM by a laser scattering approach. Both instruments have been evaluated underground in robustness and reliability testing in coal mines by the authors. Real time DPM monitors allow greater understanding of the sources and levels of DPM pollution in underground activities. They allow engineering evaluations to determine how conditions can be improved or mining personnel relocated to lower concentration levels. Studies are discussed that examine DPM concentrations from vehicles under varying ventilation conditions. Some of these concern tests undertaken during high activity longwall face moves. They focus on evaluating DPM during the various phases of the face Chock Shield moves. An initiative in some mines has been to limit the number of vehicles in the mining section or panel by the use of a Tag Board or Traffic Controller at the panel travel road entrance to manage exhaust DPM and gases. Diesel tags or tokens are used to control the number of vehicles entering a section or panel and so limit level of pollution. Summation of DPM levels from points monitored throughout a panel demonstrates increasing DPM levels from influence of additional equipment in series within the ventilation circuit. An alternative approach is to invest in underground continuous real-time monitoring of exhaust gases, DPM and section air quantity and integrate this information to determine whether an additional vehicle can enter without exceeding diesel target limit. This optimizes the access of diesel vehicles and replaces the existing manual tag board system. Real-time DPM monitoring allows the industry to pin-point high exposure zones such as those encountered where various vehicles work in areas of constrained or difficult ventilation. Identification of high DPM zones allows efficient modification of mine ventilation, operator positioning and other work practices to reduce underground miners? exposures.

From the chemist's point of view it would be ideal if specifications for coke for any stated purpose could be written on the basis of chemical composition and burning characteristics. Unfortunately this is not possible. In fact, the physical properties of a coke are often of such major importance as to render any specified chemical requirements totally inadequate to show the quality of coke desired. For example, a furnace coke may admirably fill all chemical requirements, such as for low phosphorus, sulphur, moisture, and high fixed carbon, and still be too soft to support the burden of the furnace without excessive crushing. Again, a domestic coke though a good fuel as judged from Chemical analysis, may be of unmarketable size. Thus one can not define the quality of a coke for a specified purpose without taking into account both its chemical and physical characteristics even when this has been done the specification may fail because neither coke user nor producer can accurately define by quantitative tests the qualities most desired. In other words, there is need of accurate test methods for measuring the properties of coke and, what is equally important, for correlating the results with the behavior of the coke in use. Coke quality is determined by the kind of coal used, the coking process, and the type of equipment used in the coking process. Chemical analysis of the coals, together with small-scale coking tests, will give a good indication of their suitability; but, in general, coke must be produced on an industrial scale and tested in the equipment for which it is intended before conclusive information as to its quality is obtained.

Three papers were presented for discussion at the conference: 1) Instrumented driven steel tube piles at Canary Wharf; author: A. R. Gaba, United Kingdom. The author described the Canary Wharf development in the London Docklands, and in particular, the decision to build over the water by driving open-ended steel piles 25m in length into the sands below the soft estuarine deposits. The tubes were then filled with concrete above the sand plug (usually 17m below pile head). Three trial piles were instrumented with: a) resistance strain guages on the inside of the tubes; b) vibrating wire guages on the re­inforcement of the concrete. The trial piles showed elastic behaviour in five cycles of lateral loading, while the verticle load tests showed a definite bi-linear load-settlement behaviour. The initial stiff portion was a result of frictional staff resistance, both inside and outside the tube, with the soil at the base contributing at higher settlements. Loads were taken to three times working load, with no imminent signs of failure.

The design and operation of the Koppers powdered-coal gasifier and its auxiliaries at Louisiana, Mo., are described. This unit was designed to convert 1 ton of coal per hour with oxygen and superheated steam into synthesis gas - primarily carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The first run was made on May 4, 1949. After this, 44 short runs (less than 8 hours each) and 1 long run (lasting 11 days) were made. Total gasification time was 420 hours. The gasifier was not cooled down during the year when these runs were made. After an initial period of test operations and equipment proving, during which 12 runs were made, the effect of numerous variables on gasifier performance was studied. The long run was made primarily to check the equipment in sustained operation. Detailed data from these runs are presented.

Strategic Data Planning (SDP) is an emerging technique for the analysis and design of information systems. This paper describes the use of strategic data planning in the formulation of a complete integrated set of mining technical systems for the Koolan Island iron ore mine. Applications covered include hydrogeology, geology, mine planning, surveying, quality control, laboratory and mine production recording. Koolan Island is 13 kilometres long and 5.5 kilometres wide at its widest point. Its sole industry is an open pit iron ore mine of 3 million tonnes annual capacity, owned and operated by BHP Minerals. Some of the production is used by BHP Steel International, but most is exported. The orebody is steeply dipping and is mined bench by bench. Outturn grades for run-of-mine product are iron 66.5%, silica 3.0%, alumina 1.0%. Computer systems are run on Data General equipment, currently an MV10000. Computer applications, which are shared across mine sites, are developed and maintained by BHP Information Systems in BHP's Melbourne Office.

Mineral sand products have been produced from beach sand heavy minerals for nearly a century. These minerals have specific gravities of 3.0 or higher and are extremely resistant to weathering. The most common economic heavy minerals are ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, stauarolite, monazite, garnet, and the aluminum-silicate minerals. Of these, ilmenite is the most abundant. In some cases a deposit may contain only one or two economic heavy minerals whereas in others five or six may be present. Heavy mineral mining began in the late eighteen hundreds when monazite was mined for its thorium content. This was followed by mining activity on the North Florida coast just south of Jacksonville Beach - where ilmenite and zircon were first separated during the WW I (1,8). Modern heavy mineral mining began in Eastern Australia during the late nineteen-thirties and spread to the United States during World War II. It is the purpose of this paper to review the commercial heavy mineral products, their sources, and their uses.

Near Rainbow Mountain in the east-central Alaska Range an ultramafic complex forms a sill-like intrusion composed of dismembered bodies exposed along the south side of the Denali Fault and Broxson Gulch Thrust. The complex comprises dunite and peridotite with lesser gabbro, which together exhibit poorly defined, steeply-dipping compositional layering. The complex hosts four types of copper-nickel occurrences which have characteristic platinum-group elements (PGE), gold, and cobalt distributions. Three of the occurrence-types are considered to have formed as a result of primary mineral segregations which developed during intrusion of the complex. The fourth type of copper-nickel occurrence formed as a result of post-magmatic hydrothermal fluids at intrusive contacts. Scanning electron microscope examination indicates that PGE occur as micron-size telluride and arsenide minerals.

La polarografía es un microelectrodo de forma de capilar que destila mercurio eun solución colocada sobre una celda, desde donde se aplica un potencial contra un electrodo de referencia, para luego ser medido por la corriente fluída a través de la celda. La implicancia de este método polarográfico estriba en el empleo del cloruro de calcio como elemento separador del oxígeno y auxiliar en la concentración de metales pesados en una sola muestra. De forma que, se pueden concentrar grandes cantidades de metales sin alterar o requerir grandes disoluciones. En consecuencia, la eficacia del método responde a una fácil confrontación o chequeo con la curva standard determinante de los datos.

MUCH discussion has occurred as to the use or uses which might be made after the war of either or both .of the large diameter (24 inch and 20 inch) War Emergency pipe lines built by y the United States Government during the war, to move crude petroleum and refined products such as gasoline and light distillate fuels. Indeed, the disposition and future use of these lines constitutes, in the minds of many people, one of the most important problems of postwar readjustment in the Oil Industry. The two lines, running from points in Texas to the New York-New Jersey-Philadelphia area, were constructed only because of the inability during the war to continue normal ocean tanker movements from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast. Physically they could continue after the war to move crude or refined products, and it appears that lines of such large diameter as these, if operated at or near capacity, could move these liquids at costs per barrel which might be considered in the same general cost range as for tanker movements.1 If, therefore, we were to look forward at the end of the war to a shortage of tankers, it is probable that the continued use of these pipe lines for petroleum movements to the East Coast would be worth considering, as against building new tankers to take over the movement, provided there were no other economic or national defense reasons for restoring tanker fleets and no other better use for the pipe lines. Because of the extensive tanker construction program which has been and still is in progress, and because of our Navy's marked success in combating the submarine problem, it appears to be quite possible, however, that instead of a shortage of tankers at the end of the war, we may have a surplus instead. If this should turn out to be the case, then there would seem to be considerable doubt that these lines would continue to be used for moving petroleum or products to the East Coast at the expense of tying up tankers. It would hardly seem probable that the owner of any such tankers would ship via one of the large lines at the expense of tying up one of its own tankers, unless the pipe line tariff rate charged was lower than the out-of-pocket cost of operating a tanker as against the out-of-pocket cost of keeping it tied up. And considering that a substantial part of the cost of operating a tanker goes on even when it is tied up, it is very difficult to figure out how any pipeline tariff could be established that would be low enough to compete with individually owned tankers that otherwise would be idle. Certainly a pipe line tariff rate high enough to cover direct costs plus even a low rate of depreciation and return on the investment would be far above the out-of-pocket tanker operating costs. In view of these considerations, it has seemed desirable to examine with some care some of the various alternatives that have been suggested as to other possible uses to which these lines might be put. One of these is for transportation of natural gas to the New York-New Jersey Philadelphia area. This Eastern area, located at the destination of these lines, contains the heaviest concentration of population in the United States, and is not now served with natural gas. "IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to describe the results of a preliminary investigation of a method thought to be useful in interpreting geological structures in un-metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. The writer is not aware of the method having been described or investigated previously, although no thorough search of the literature has been made.The method to •be described is based on the assumption that, in argillaceous sedimentary rocks, certain ceramic properties are diagnostic for certain beds within areas of variable limits.Two ceramic properties• have been investigated: pyrometric cone equivalent (P.C.E.), and bloating characteristics of shales. The enquiry has been directed toward testing the usefulness of these properties in determining the following:A -The correlation of shale beds and, by inference, of coal seams, sandstone beds, or other such structures associated with them.B.-The location of contacts between marine and non-marine shales where lithological, palaeontological, or other evidence is lacking.Limitations of time and facilities have prevented a thorough investigation of this problem. The results given in the present paper are preliminary only. It is hoped, however, that they will occasion discussion or even lead to more thorough investigation of the method by individuals or organizations.There are, admittedly, various limitations to the proposed method. Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effectiveness of various types of crushers for use with the Bureau-developed pneumatic concentration technique for mica. Three types of crushers were investigated in this study, a roll crusher, a jaw crusher, and a hammer mill. All the mica concentrates produced contained over 82 percent mica, but recoveries varied considerably. The roll crusher gave the lowest recovery of 46 percent of the mica followed by the jaw crusher with a recovery of 50 percent of the mica. The hammer mill proved the most effective, producing four concentrates with recoveries of at least 70 percent.

The Kencana underground gold mine comprises two world-class epithermal vein deposits located in the North Maluku province of Indonesia on Halmahera Island. The K1 deposit has a recent extensive mining history, whilst development of the K2 deposit is in progress. Kencana epithermal vein zones have a relatively simple planar geometry dipping 25 to 45¦ towards the East and extend 400 to 600 m along strike and down dip. True width ranges from 1 m to 20 m. Economic gold grades are generally associated with two distinct mineralisation styles: Main Zone û continuous material characterised by classic epithermal vein textures including crustiform/colloform chalky white quartz- adularia sulfide banded and brecciated veining typically grading 10 to 40 g/t Au. Bonanza Zone û semi-continuous identifiable zones within the Main Zone. Characterised by brecciated quartz-adularia sulfide banded vein æginguroÆ material typically grading 80 to 200 g/t Au. Associated with this æBonanzaÆ zone are gold grades averaging around ten times higher than the surrounding Main Zone. At the resource evaluation stage, these deposits are typically drilled on approximately 25 m by 25 m spacing. This drilling density is usually adequate to allow robust estimation of global resources, including the lateral definition of æBonanzaÆ style mineralisation. It appears intuitive at the resource definition stage to separately model the æBonanza ZoneÆ using deterministic methods such as manual interpretation and wireframing. Inevitably, however, such deterministic methods result in a simplified version of reality. Whilst the geologistÆs interpretation of the overall vein volume and lateral extent of æBonanzaÆ mineralisation has proven to be remarkably accurate, close-spaced sampling and mapping of the K1 orebody has shown that this style of mineralisation exhibits extreme short-scale geometric and spatial variability. A consequence of this short-scale geometric and grade variability is the significant uncertainty with reporting these Resources and Reserves at relatively small reporting time periods such as monthly production periods. The mining method employed at Kencana often involves extracting the full width of the mineralised vein with multiple mining passes over several months. In the past it has proven difficult to achieve accurate production budgets and forecasts at Kencana as any given mining schedule based on the resource model is acutely sensitive to the quantity and location of æBonanzaÆ material. Moreover, the degree of uncertainty or risk associated with a mining schedule significantly increases as the reporting time period becomes smaller. A further deficiency of deterministic methods for geometric modelling is the inherent lack of ability to derive confidence intervals for quantifying uncertainty and risk. The use of conditional simulation techniques can help overcome this deficiency. Geostatistical conditional simulation techniques have been applied at Kencana in an attempt to model and quantify geological and grade variability in the upcoming K2 orebody based on the experience to date with mining the K1 orebody. At Kencana, conditional simulation has provided a successful means to quantify uncertainties and risks associated with various data densities and reporting time periods. The results of this project have provided managers and planners with a clearer understanding of the likely variances and risks associated with predicting gold metal production at key reporting time periods based on data at the resource model level of resolution. With corporate requirements to adhere to mining budgets/quarterly schedules, this type of analysis allows a more scientific approach to estimating grade uncertainty in the mining schedule. Until now this has been difficult to quantify due to the extreme gold metal variability. The availability of this type of analysis allows a time-efficient rationalisation on redesigns of the mining shapes and effective communication of the likely uncertainties involved.

Se resalta la conformación de la cadena de valor de este recurso desde el transporte hasta su uso en sitio, las posibilidades que ofrece y la regulación nacional e internacional que respalda su seguridad y confiabilidad. Para validar los beneficios del gas natural en la generación eléctrica de una operación minera, se realiza un análisis comparativo con la tecnología que actualmente se usa (diésel). Asimismo, aunque no se abordan a profundidad, se muestran otras posibilidades que existen con el uso de gas natural en sitios mineros.
