Erratic high grade values are as common in Nature as they are a source of problems for resource estimators. In some highly erratic metal deposits, less than 2% of the drilling samples can represent more than 10% of the total metal in the blocks and they are associated with a high risk level. There is a risk of local overestimation but also of global overestimation, with the high grades being projected over too large a volume. Capping or restriction of these outliers control is being widely used in the industry and commonly applied in resource estimation for the last three decades. The primary purpose of this paper is to present and describe the most applied methodologies for restricting the extrapolation of high grade samples and discuss the results based on a theoretical simulated model. Additionally, this paper demonstrates the economical impact associated with the high-grade and the project risk profile associated with each method.

Reactivity of MgO towards C12+air, C12+N2 and C12+CO gas mixtures was studied up to 1000 °C. Carbochlorination of MgO occurs at temperatures lower than that of its oxychlorination. Effects of gas flow rate, temperature and partial pressure of the carbochlorinating gas mixture on the reaction rate were investigated. The apparent activation energy of MgO carbochlorination is 49 kJ1 mol between 425°C and 600°C. At 550 °C, the apparent reaction orders with respect to C12+CO, C12 and CO, are 2.37, 1.47 and 0.89, respectively. At this temperature, the maximum reaction rate was obtained using a C12+CO gas mixture having a Cl2lCO molar ratio equal to about 0.6.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes a passive personal sampling device for N02 in air, developed by the New York University Medical Center under Bureau Grant G0133066. The sampler has been successfully demonstrated in the field and in the laboratory. In corroborative laboratory trials the agreement with reference method is excellent. The overall accuracy is approximately ±5 pct of reading to a precision of about ±l pct. All evidence indicates that these samplers should indicate the time-weighted-average N02 concentration to the above accuracy and precision equally well in the field since effects of wind velocity and relative humidity are negligible and the effects of temperature are about 0.1 pct per °F. The duration of exposure and the approximate temperature are the only data that need to be collected in the field. A two-step analysis procedure in field or service laboratory is then used to obtain the total cumulated exposure to N02 in parts per million-hours (ppm times hours), which can be converted to the time-weighted-average concentration of N02 in ppm by dividing cumulated exposure by the duration of the exposure.

IN a paper read before the Institute of Metals, Rosenhain 1 described a new type of furnace designed primarily for the thermal analysis of metals by the inverse-rate method and used by him in the metallurgical department of the National Physical Laboratory with considerable success. In his discussion of this furnace, Rosenhain pointed out some difficulties met with in its operation, such as uniformity of rate of heating or cooling being inadequate for the degree of accuracy aimed at. To overcome this difficulty, he suggested, in place of motor propulsion, a gravity drive controlled by a"hydraulic cylinder with a relief valve whose width of opening can he regulated to allow of any desired rate of motion." The authors, in constructing a thermal-analysis furnace of Rosenhain's type, have therefore followed this suggestion and also added certain features that increase somewhat the convenience and simplicity of its operation. Requests for information regarding this furnace and the highly satisfactory results obtained from its use, it is believed, justify describing its construction and operation in sufficient detail to make possible its duplication or improvement. Description of Furnace.-The details of the furnace construction are shown in Fig. 1, which is drawn to scale. The heating tube is of /4 in. (6.35 mm.) wall "alundum" heated at the upper end by seventeen turns of 0.52 mm. platinum wire, which is coated with "alundum" cement supplied for this purpose. The cement coating is essential when a high temperature (over 1000° C.) is required, as it prevents hot spots with the resulting burning out of the heater. This platinum-wire winding, unlike "nichrome," is entirely satisfactory for temperatures of at least 1000° C. It has been maintained at that temperature continuously for 2 months and shows no signs of deterioration. This temperature is maintained by a current of 5 amp. drawn from 30 volts potential, so its necessarily continuous operation is quite economical.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts in the United States. The paper describes mining and ore recovery methods common to the Batesville manganese district, Independence County, Ark., and gives the costs of producing merchantable ore by three operators whose methods were more or less typical of those of many other local manganese producers. The operating costs reported were those of Leonard Baxter at mines on Brooks Hill for the calendar year 1958 and Arkansas Mining and Exploration Corp. at Section 16 mine and the Searcy group of mines and Miller-McGee Corp. at the Diener mine during the first 6 months of 1959. Manganese are was mined in the district as early as 1849 and almost continuously thereafter until August 1959, when termination of the Government's domestic manganese purchase program resulted in complete cessation of mining activity. During those years, production came from more than 189 mines and properties, of which only a few produced as much as 30,000 tons of merchantable ore.

"INTRODUCTION In a previous reports results were given of a manhole investigation carried out over a period from June,- 1929, to July, 1930, in cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by this company. Considerable time was spent in this initial investigation in developing a suitable detector for determining the range of explosibility of the gases found in manholes. About 17,000 tests have been made with the detector since the investigation was started and its utility has been verified and its accuracy checked, by having complete analyses made of such samples that showed combustibles present equal to or above 25 per cent of the lower explosive limit, and those found deficient in oxygen.The initial investigation made in 1929 and 1930 demonstrated that the detection, control, and elimination of combustible hazards in manholes can best be obtained by a close cooperation of the interested parties through a systematic and continuous inspection of manholes, under proper supervision.COOPERATIVE INVESTIGATI0N DURING 1931The investigation carried out during the year 1931 has been along lines similar to that conducted during 1929 and 1930. In the present investigation the Edison Electric Illuminating Cc. of Boston and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co., have cooperated with the Bureau of lanes. The Boston Consolidated Gas Co. serves a major part of the territory under discussion with gas, but the tests covered the Edison territory irrespective of the gam company furnishing manufactured gas. A test crew consisting of two men, one an employee of the Consolidated Gas Co. and one an employee of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., has been continuously employed during the year in the testing of games in manholes served by the Edison system. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the special service department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin vice president of the Consolidated Gas Co.As in the previous investigation, all manhole tests were given test numbers. The test data sheets on which the information regarding the tests were recorded were prepared in triplicate, one copy going to the Edison Company, one going to the Gas company, and the third to the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh. These test data sheets were then filed (1) according to the town, (2) the street location, and (3) the manhole number; in this way a complete record pf each manhole tested was immediately available. Crystalline silicon solar cells are the most important solar cells manufactured today. This will most probably remain the situation the next decade. The future silicon feedstock is most likely not reject from the production of electronic-grade silicon. There will probably be a more direct solar-grade silicon route, excluding the electronic-grade silicon "detour". Estimated global solar energy demand in 2001 required approximately 5,500 tons of silicon feedstock. This required 65,000 tons of quartz. If the trend continues, the solar energy demand in 2010 would require approximately 30,000 tons of silicon feedstock and 350,000 tons of quartz, although the need for quartz probably will be lower than this. Quartzite has been regarded as the most suitable primary raw material used in the silicon solar cell production chain. This may change as the raw material requirements for the production of metallurgical-grade silicon are most likely to change. In addition, quartz or other silica-containing minerals from other rocks may be of a higher purity or contain lesser amounts of the most harmful elements. This favours increased beneficiation of primary raw materials in the future solar silicon feedstock production chain.

A better connection between laboratory- and pilot-scale test results, and heap bioleaching performance can be achieved by generating reliable information on the fundamental microbial, chemical and physical processes that occur in heaps and incorporating this information into a comprehensive and robust model. More efficient heap bioleaching, particularly of chalcopyrite, has the potential to add value to the mining industry as well as deliver attractive environmental and social benefits to the communities within which those companies operate.The results of fundamental chemical and microbiological studies of the leaching mechanism, the temperature dependence of chalcopyrite bioleaching, and the optimisation of leaching conditions are described with examples from full-scale heaps. The development and application of a number of novel techniques and tools has assisted our understanding of heap subprocesses mineralogy, hydrology, chemistry and microbiology. The heap bioleaching model HeapSim, which embodies a large number of effects not previously accounted for in other models, continues to be refined and has been applied successfully to the study of several heap bioleach systems.

The turbulence characteristics and measurement techniques for agitated tanks are well established for liquid and liquid-gas systems. However, the literature shows that the overall energy dissipation rate (related to turbulence) is affected not only by air addition, but also by the concentration of solids. Unfortunately, there are no reliable measurement techniques for characterizing turbulence in a three phase (liquid-solids-gas) environmental system, which is the case in a flotation cell. Therefore, the effect of turbulence on flotation kinetics is very much one of conjecture. The aim of this work was to develop a sensor to characterize the degree of velocity fluctuation, which is related to turbulence, in a flotation cell operating with slurry and air. This sensor comprises a piezoelectric film transducer that converts mechanical to electrical energy. Hence, when the sensor deflects backwards and forwards an AC voltage is created. Flotation studies carried out using this sensor in a 3m3 Metso RCS cell processing a copper sulphide ore showed a highly turbulent impeller zone with transition to a significantly less turbulent zone in the upper portion of the cell. The transition region moves as the cell operating variables are changed, for instance the impeller speed, impeller size, air rate and feed solids concentration. Its effectiveness in this connection has been demonstrated not only by research but by actual coal-mine explosions in which hundreds of lives have been saved because of its presence. In a general way this paper gives pertinent facts concerning rock dusting practices in the United States. Information has been obtained from many reliable sources, and various coal-mining companies have furnished data on cost and other details.

Control of ground water for construction purposes is an everyday occurrence in the U.S. Thousands of pumps are in service at any given time. Most of these applications simply consist of pumping water out of an excavation, generally with the aid of sumps. Modern hydraulic and electric submersible pumps permit these procedures because of their ability to pump solids and take air without losing their prime. These procedures work fine up to a point and permit the contractor to control his ground water problems adequately and at minimal cost. When that point is exceeded, the ground water problems sometimes are compounded. Over-application of open pumping techniques can result in slope failures, cofferdam instability, bottom heaving, boils, loss of ground, damage to adjacent structures and utilities, and assorted other maladys which could and should be avoided. This paper will deal with the options involved in ground water control, a discussion of the unwanted side effects of dewatering, and examples of ground water control projects in various cities around the U.S.

"This study aimed to determine the optimum operating parameters of a continuous bioleaching system to leach arsenic (As) from mine tailings using a mixed mesophilic bacterial culture. The microbial consortium, previously adapted for effective growth at high pulp density and metal concentrations, was mainly composed of Leptospirillum ferriphilum, and Acidithiobacillus caldus. The mine tailings, collected from the Janggun mine (South Korea) contained 11% (w/w) of As. The tests were performed in a laboratory-scale unit composed of three reactors connected in series following a cascade configuration. Agitation speed, air supply, solid concentration, residence time and temperature were systematically optimized by assessing the leaching activity. Several parameters were monitored on a daily basis, including the As released into solution, iron oxidation rates, pH, cell concentration, dissolved oxygen and redox potential. Overall, improvement of oxygen transfer, by optimizing the agitation speed and air supply, presented the most tangible impact on the leaching performance. The highest As leaching efficiency observed in this study was 82%, which supports the feasibility of the process. INTRODUCTION Worldwide, around of 65 billion tons of mine tailings are produced every year (Jones & Boger, 2012). These materials comprise the waste minerals produced after ore beneficiation. Mine tailings usually contain heavy metals (e.g., Cobalt (Co), Lead (Pb), Zinc (Zn) and Arsenic (As) (Falagán, Grail, & Johnson, 2016; Nguyen, Lee, Park, & Lee, 2014). The exposure of these materials to the environment can produce serious health damage and environmental degradation (Martin, Dowling, Pearce, Sillitoe, & Florentine, 2014). Mine tailings management represents a major issue in South Korea. There are more than 1,000 abandoned mines containing stockpiled mine tailings within the territory (Choi, Park, Hong, Park, & Kim, 2013; Kim, Kim, Ahn, Ko, & Lee, 2005; Lee, Lee, & Kim, 1998). These tailings comprise high concentration of arsenic. Therefore, the Korean Government has directed its efforts to developing eco-friendly technologies, for the arsenic detoxification of mine tailings Continuous bioleaching is explored as a remediation technology (Borja et al., 2016). The present study aimed to develop a mixed mesophilic bacterial culture for optimal growth at high metal and solid concentration; and optimize the operating conditions of a continuous bioleaching unit. This investigation forms part of a larger study aimed to develop a bioleaching technique to treat Janggun mine tailings (Borja et al., 2017; Ngoma et al., 2017)."

Sheet flotation is a new two dimensional column flotation cell that produces continuous spectrum of products. Analogous to a shaking table in its performance and analysis, sheet flotation is a sheet of bubbles rising through packing contained between two walls. Feed enters the sheet at the lower left and the product exit along the top and right edges. Iligh grade materials exit at the top left, middlings exit at the top right comer and low grade waste materials exit at the bottom right. As in the case of a shaking table, two motions are required: up and right. Bubbles furnish the upwards movement for hydrophobic particles, slanted packing the rightward movement for hydrophilic particles. The sheet flotation cells is analysed as a 40 x 40 array of simple cells. In practice, 1000 x 1000 arrays of simple cells may be expected. With larger arrays, excellent separations may be expected. LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB) is operating iron ore mines, concentration plants and pelletizing plants in Northern Sweden. The largest of the apatite magnetite deposits and the mines are Kiirunavaara with annual production rate of approximately 27 Mt crude ore underground. LKAB produces two varieties of pellets: blast furnace pellets and direct reduction pellets (LKAB DR Oxide Pellets). Meanwhile the concentration process in a sequence of the low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and flotation at the concentration plant. In spring 2007 there were noticed great fluctuations of SiO2 grade in the crude ore. The high SiO2 grade is particularly problematic in the case of direct reduction pellets. In consequence, a project was started (called Silica in the Mine) to define exactly the problem related with silica and to find out, if possible, the reason for the great fluctuation of SiO2 grade in the crude ore going to the processing plant. A further target of this project was to develop a simplified method at the laboratory scale, to predict SiO2 grade in the magnetite concentrate in the future, but also predict the physical properties of the ore with respect to mineral processing. The essential stage of systematic characterization of the ore body for mineral processing properties is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the large scale at the concentration plants using empirical data collected at the mineral processing by LKAB in Kiruna. Further a target was also to find useful physical parameters for mineral processing and implant those parameters into the existing geological 3D-model of the deposit. This information will be used for making prognosis of the future mining and the quality of the crude ore. It will also give better control and improve the production planning in the mine and the performance at the concentration plant in Kiruna concerning the decrease of the SiO2 grade of the magnetite concentrate.

As part of a national canvass of water use the Bureau of Mines compiled data on water requirements in the petroleum and natural gas industries for the calendar year 1962, specifically in well drilling, secondary-recovery operations, and natural gas processing plants. Total new water use in the petroleum industry of the United States, excluding refining, was 5.3 billion barrels. Secondary-recovery operations and natural gas processing plants required about 2.5 billion barrels of new water input; each of these requirements was about eight times greater than that for well drilling. Total use, including recirculated water, was 45.3 billion barrels of which 3.4 billion barrels was consumed. The greatest use of recirculated water was for natural gas processing, amounting to 38.2 billion barrels. Projections of total water use show that by 1975, 75.4 billion barrels will be used by the petroleum industry, of which 10.2 billion barrels will be new water. By 1985, the total use requirement will be 92.8 billion barrels, of which 13.1 billion barrels will be new water.
