An overburden handling dragline operation was conducted at a strip mine near Colstrip, Montana. The objective of the demonstration was to determine the degree a dragline could mix overburden inhibitory zones during the spoiling process. In order to quantify the mixing process the overburden was: 1) scatter spoiled; 2) dump spoiled; and 3) spoiled in a normal manner. This demonstration was part of an effort to investigate means of reestablishing non-polluted hydrological systems in areas where surface mining directly impacts shallow ground-water resources. When inhibitory material constituted < 5% of the total overburden volume, such material was essentially not detectable in the resultant spoil pile. When inhibitory material exceeded 15% of the overburden volume it was always found in the resultant spoil pile, generally with a smaller extent, indicating partial dilution. Inhibitory overburden zones often reappeared at the base or top of spoil piles in the potential aquifer and root zones suggesting the need for selective placement procedures. Scatter spoiling did not appear to be significantly more effective than normal spoiling, however clump spoiling seemed to produce less mixing of inimical zones. Mining activity has reduced ground-water levels within 1600 m of the active pit. The aquifer which is developing in spoils appears to have similar confinement characteristics as those that existed in the premined aquifer. To date no definite trends have been observed concerning changes in surface or ground-water chemistry associated with mining.

"In this study pertaining to the electrochemistry of chalcopyrite, the active/passive behavior of a chalcopyrite electrode in 0.5M sulfuric acid solution was investigated. Potentiostatic and potentiodynamic polarization and multi-cyclic voltanunetry were conducted to analyze the electrodissolution parameters of the electrode.The potentiodynamic and potentiostatic polarizations of chalcopyrite revealed the formation of a passive film on the surface of chalcopyrite. From the potentiostatic study in the passive potential region, a decrease in the dissolution current density by increasing the potential was observed. From this, it was concluded that the passive film is an n-type semiconductor and cation interstitial defects or anion vacancies are the charge carriers. From multi-cyclic voltammetry studies, four cathodic peaks at - 0.37, 0.30, -0.10 and-0.20 YsHE were detected on the surface of a passivated chalcopyrite electrode. The cathodic peaks at 0.37 and 0.30 V were connected to ferric to ferrous reduction and copper sulfide formation, respectively. The peaks at -0.10 and - 0.20 were related to chalcopyrite reduction. The products of the chalcopyrite reduction reactions were suggested to be Cu2S, Cu9fesS16 and Cu5feS4 and evolution of hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S).IntroductionChalcopyrite is the most abundant copper bearing mineral in the world and its dissolution behavior represents the most important technological consideration in the hydrometallurgical extraction of copper [I]. Since the current pyrometallurgical methods for copper extraction from chalcopyrite have environmental issues, many studies have considered the leaching and dissolution of CuFeS2 in different aqueous media [2-5]. The main problem associated with leaching processes is the slow dissolution rate of the mineral [6]. During the dissolution process, increasing the potential of the chalcopyrite in the anodic direction will cause the formation of surface layers which hinder the dissolution rate of the mineral [7]. The precise composition of the layers is in dispute. Previous studies have concluded that these layers could be sulfur [8-9], precipitated iron compounds [8], a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) - which slows the rate of electron transfer- [10], a metal deficient sulfide [ll], or polysulfidic in nature [12-13]. In order to increase the leaching kinetics of chalcopyrite, the characterization of the layers formed during dissolution is essential and electrochemical methods are important to this end. Studies by Biegler [14] show nucleation and growth of a thin two-dimensional sulfide phase on the surface of chalcopyrite during the exposure of a polished sample in HzS04 solution or air. More studies by Biegler and Swift [15] have shown evidence for nucleation and growth of a 3-dimensional phase at low anodic potentials (around 200 mV vs. OCP). The current-time behavior of the dissolution process in this potential area has the characteristics of expansion and overlap of localized dissolution centers."

"Occurrences of fluorite on the Packard property were first examined by an engineer3/ of the Bureau of Mines in July 1943 as the result of receipt of an application for an access road. In August of the same year the showings were examined by a geologist4/ of the Federal Geological Survey. The property was again examined by an engineer5/ of the Bureau of Mines in March 1944. This last examination resulted in a proposal that access be gained by construction of a truck trail and that the Bureau of Mines undertake to explore the fluorite showings.The truck trail was constructed by the Public Roads Administration, which began the work on February 17, 1945, and completed it 8 days later.The Bureau of Mines exploratory program was completed on May 16, 1945. It consisted of stripping overburden, trenching, test pitting, tunneling, sampling, and topographic mapping.In addition to being described in some detail, the extent of the work as well as results are shown in accompanying tables and figures.Mrs. Rhoda A. Packard, Mrs. Nora 1. Cline, and C. B. Pettingill, all of Tonto Basin, Ariz., own the property, which comprises four contiguous, unpatented lode mining claims recorded at Globe, Ariz., as the Walnut and the Bluebird 2, 3, and 4. The claims are situated in T. 6 N., R. 11 E., Gila County. David L. Roscoe of Tombstone, Ariz., holds a lease and option to purchase.Access to the property is by Highway 88 from Globe, 34 miles to Roosevelt, thence 24 miles by a graded county road along the west side of Roosevelt Lake to Tonto Basin. Here the Greenback Ranch road, constructed by the Forest Service and maintained by the county, crosses Tonto Creek and continues easterly to the foothills. The truck trail leaves the road 8.5 miles east of Tonto Basin and runs 2.5 miles in a southerly direction to the property. (Fig. 1.)The fluorite deposits lie in and along a small canyon in a rough, rocky area at an altitude of about 3,400 feet, Vegetation is scant and of the usual desert variety. The summer climate is dry and hot and the winter climate moderate. Rainfall at the Forest Service Station in Tonto Basin was 11.4 inches from May 1944 through March 1945."

It is a common misconception that the grant of mining tenure, whether it be an Exploration Permit, Mineral Development Licence or Mining Lease, will entitle the holder to access all land within it in order to explore or mine. The ability for miners to access their tenure in order to undertake activities is critical to the industry. While significant time and energy is quite rightly dedicated to resolving native title and cultural heritage issues before the commencement of mining operations, the same cannot always be said for addressing potential impediments that arise as a result of the overlap between mining and other tenures. Miners should be aware of the overlaps that occur with other tenure and the impact of these overlaps on the minerÆs ability to explore or produce from the area. The existence of an overlap with petroleum tenure, nature refuges, national parks, wild river areas or reserves such as aboriginal land leases are all likely to have an impact on the minerÆs ability to access the area and conduct activities. In some instances, such as an overlap with petroleum tenure, Queensland legislation encourages the miner to reach agreement with the holders of the overlapping tenure. However, in other instances, such as an overlap with a national park, mining tenure is unlikely to be granted at all. This paper summarises the impacts and impediments that arise as a result of overlaps of tenure that are likely to affect mining operations. It also provides examples of how these impediments can, if possible, be overcome under Queensland legislation.

About two years ago Dr. Newberry referred to me for study a considerable collection of fossil plants sent him by Dr. Arthur F. Wendt, engineer of the silver mines " El Cerro Rico de Potosi" in Bolivia. As I had been interested in working up the extensive accumulations of existing plants made by Dr. H. H. Rusby in the Bolivian Andes further north, and in assisting Dr. Rusby in the study of those now being collected by Mr. Miguel Bang in other parts of that country, I was glad of an opportunity of ascertaining something of the Tertiary flora of the region. I was unable to take up the subject at that time, but have since been able to conclude the investigation, and the results are here presented. At a time when the mineral resources of the Southern States are attracting such widespread interest and attention, I have thought it appropriate to give a short general description of the iron-ore deposits of a territory concerning which little is as yet known and nothing published, so far as I am aware. The data used here are due to the preliminary examinations of the North Carolina Geological Survey, on which work I was engaged during the past summer, and my acknowledgments are due to Prof. J. A. Holmes, State Geologist, and Messrs. Harris, Ashe, and Lewis, of the survey, for their co-operation in the work; also to Messrs. A. S. McCreath and C. B. White for analyses which they Kindly furnished. Other analyses were made by Mr. Charles Baskerville, assistant chemist to the survey, and this may be understood where the name of the chemist is not mentioned. All samples for analysis were dried at 212&apos; F. The accompanying map has been prepared from the revised sheets of the United States Geological Survey by Mr. H. L. Harris, and will be referred to throughout this paper. Ashe county lies in the extreme northwestern part of North Carolina, bordering on Tennessee and Virginia; it is drained principally by the north and south forks of New river and their tributaries, and is therefore on the eastern edge of the great Mississippi drainagebasin. The country is exceedingly rugged and mountainous, having an average elevation of about 2900 feet above sea-level. Jefferson, the county seat, near the center of the county, is 45 miles nearly due south from the Norfolk and Western R.R. at Marion, Va., and 30 miles northwest from the Richmond and Danville R.R. at Wilkesboro, N. C. Geologically the ore-deposits described in this paper are situated in the area of the crystalline rocks, consisting chiefly of gneiss, hornblende-schist, and micaceous schists.

Rostoker, Inc. has developed a process to smelt solid hazardous/non-hazardous inorganic wastes. Near seven hundred experiments were performed. Actual industrial wastes as well as reagent grade chemicals were used. By mixing a multiplicity of these wastes to proper formulations, then furnacing them, it was determined that saleable end products could be reclaimed; metal, fume and slag. The slag, due to its siliceous structure was tested to be leach resistant (40 CFR). This formed the essence of our patent, #5,180,421 "Method and Apparatus for Recovering Useful Products from Waste Streams". What is unique is that a HTMR (High Temperature Metal Recovery) process has been developed that can treat a multiplicity of wastes within the same furnace. The discussion will include a list of waste streams we have treated, details of proper waste formulation and experimental results.

There are challenges in mining deep tabular ore deposits using the open stoping method, particularly mining remnant panels towards the end of mine life. The remnant panels have experienced stress concentration and are in the failing or post failure state causing drilling and loading difficulties, ground movement, induced seismicity and ground instability problems. As more mines are going deep, without effective ground control management, the mine production will be interrupted and equipment damage and personnel injury are likely to occur. Mining at Falconbridge Lockerby Mine located in the Sudbury Basin was concentrated in the deep zone from late 1990s to 2004. The remnant panels situated approximately from 1800m to 1920m below surface were mined in 2004 before the mine closure. These panels were in the central section of the orebody along strike. The orebody was relatively narrow ranging from 5m to 15m and steep dipping at 70o to 80o. Because of the retreat mining sequence and the mining depth, stress concentration, wall closure and seismicity had caused a number of mining difficulties. Managing these challenges was critical in achieving the mine production target without compromising personnel safety and excavation stability. A comprehensive ground control management approach was adopted to mine the remnant panels at depth. The measures taken included ground movement monitoring, understanding the movement pattern of the footwall rock and selecting appropriate support systems, analyzing seismic monitoring data and defining re-entry protocol, brow support design and restricting access. This paper presents these ground control measures and the experience gained in successfully mining the deep remnant panels at Lockerby Mine.

The characteristics of some common size distribution equations are critically discussed. A generalized form of several well-known size distribution equations is obtained from a differential equation describing statistical distributions. The equation contains three parameters and can describe the major features of size distributions in the fine and the coarse size regions. A graphical method for its implementation is provided. The application of this and other equations to sets of data are compared both for the quality of fit and from a comminution kinetics viewpoint. If a narrow size range of a brittle material is broken sufficiently to obliterate the feed sizes, but not so severely that excessive secondary breakage occurs, a plot of cumulative fraction by weight undersize (Y) vs. sieve size (X) on a log log grid (sometimes called the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann plot)1-3 gives a straight line of slope ~ 1 over much of its range. On closer inspection, deviations in the extreme coarse range covering perhaps 10 to 30% of the total sample may be apparent (frequently, a change in slope from ~ 1 to a value different from unity) together with over-all slight irregular departures from a smooth line. One model of breakage postulates that the same fracture pattern persists throughout all size ranges.4 The fracture pattern is characterized by the slope of the line on a log log grid. Accordingly, a distribution of sizes broken in the manner specified earlier is expected to produce a size distribution having the same slope as that of a broken narrow size range. Additionally, the slight irregularities mentioned above should even out in the summation process, giving a smooth straight line of slope ~1 on a log log plot. This idealized state of affairs does not, however, describe the distribution of a multi-event process such as that for a tumbling mill product. On the average, these curves (plotted again log log) tend to have a slope in the fine region different from and usually less than unity,5 while the coarse size region curves with increasing slope for cases of mild reduction, and with decreasing slope when moderate or severe size reduction has occurred. In addition, there are usually slight irregular deviations from a smooth curve. Most curves display two distinct regions — fine and coarse — and a few curves show one or more intermediate regions. Feed size studies6,7 show an effect which theory is required to explain. For the same material, mill loading and other operating conditions, and the same time of grinding, plotting the dimensionless ratios Y vs. X/(feed size) does not reduce the size distribution data to the same curve. Y vs. X does not correlate the coarse region, but it can provide a crude correlation of the fine region which improves as size diminishes and as grinding time increases. The size distribution in the coarse region is somewhat more dependent on the feed size than is the distribution in the fine region wherein the degree of dependence diminishes as time proceeds; the distribution of sizes in the fine region are determined largely by the nature of the material and the comminution conditions. A comprehensive model of comminution must recognize that several different patterns or modes of breakage can occur in a mill; 5,8,9 that there can be some selection in that some size ranges are broken more than others; and that, while some particles may be the product of a single fracture event, or may even remain unbroken, others result from multiple rebreak-age. Thus, breakage in a tumbling mill is more complex than the Schuhmann4 model admits in that several different types of comminution micro-events* occur rather than just one type, and these events, though different in size scale, are of the same overall pattern as that which is visualized by the model. The concept of an average comminution micro-event has, therefore, a mathematical rather than a physical connotation, at least for tumbling milling. Equations with which to describe particle size distributions have been sought for over half a century.10-13 No equation presently in general use was first derived from an analysis of the statistical mechanics of breakage; whatever theoretical basis the existing

The Mine to Mill concept, as it has become known, is a philosophy which is being increasingly embraced by mining companies committed to increasing their profitability through better integration and global optimisation of their mining and processing operations. Autogenous (AG) and semi-autogenous (SAG) mills are the principal primary grinding devices currently in use, their performance is particularly sensitive to feed size distribution. Most efforts to-date have centred on modifying and controlling the run-of-mine (ROM) size distribution to maximise grinding mill throughput. The complexity of the interaction between ROM size distribution, primary crusher product and AG/SAG mill performance precludes the trial-and-error approach as an effective means of determining the optimum blast-induced fragmentation size distribution. To overcome this limitation, the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) has developed modelling and simulation techniques that are able to accurately reproduce both the fragmentation processes during blasting and the subsequent performance of the comminution circuit. These models are tailored to suit local ore types, rock structure and comminution circuit design and calibrated using high quality field data. MIM Holdings Limited (MIM) have been particularly active in the Mine to Mill area and have instituted optimisation programs at three of their associated base metal operations viz Alumbrera, Ernest Henry and the Mount Isa Mines. This paper describes these programs with particular reference to the data acquisition and modelling phases, the predictions of potential productivity gains and the extent of the realisation of these gains to-date.

THE ore of the Southeast Missouri lead district consists essentially of galena in dolomitic limestone. The galena usually is in a very finely disseminated condition. The experience of recent years in the concentrating plants of the St. Joseph Lead Co. has shown that dry crushing carried to a point where about 90 per cent of the ore passes a 14-mesh screen liberates the larger portion of the galena, and minimizes further necessary reduction in rod or ball mills. Concentration practice has attempted to carry size reduction to a point where economic unlocking of the galena is obtained, without causing undue sliming of the very friable galena. While 60 per cent of the tonnage of the district is treated by the flotation process, only 40 per cent of the total concentrates is produced by that means, as efforts have always been made to keep the grade and tonnage of flotation feed as low as possible. The milling practice of the district for some years has recognized the generally accepted idea of better selective grinding in rod mills as compared with ball mills, with the attendant decrease in production of fines. The function of rod and ball mills in the various concentrating plants is the grinding of table middlings and coarse tailings that carry lead values too high to be discarded. The simplified flowsheet in Fig. I illustrates the place of grinding mills in the circuit. The arrangement of classifiers, tables and mills constitutes a closed circuit within somewhat flexible limits. In 1937 experiments were conducted in replacing the ball charge in a 6 by 4-ft. ball mill with rods 2 in. in diameter and 51 in. long. This step was taken with some hesitancy, as it was easy to picture a mass of tangled and crossed rods. However, no difficulties developed, and after a short trial period, six more ball mills were converted to rod mills. These mills are of the spur gear and pinion, belt-driven type, using in most cases a 75-hp. motor and having a 9 1/2 -in. open trunnion discharge. As ball mills, they carried a charge of 16,000 to 20,000 lb. of balls, 2 in. in original size. The feed to the mills was dewatered by dewatering wheels and introduced at 70 to 75 per cent solids, with a single scoop feeder. One change in mill design was found advisable when rods were introduced. The existing end liners had an outward flare of 3 ½ in. in 12 in. These were replaced by linings having vertical interior faces, in order to prevent undue end travel of the rods. This change gave an effective working length of 5 2 ¾ in. inside the mill. No alterations were made in the shell liners, which are of the smooth type, made of manganese steel 2 in. in original thickness. The rods at present in use are 51 in. long and 1 3/4in. in diameter. The composition has been varied at times; at present they contain 0.70 per cent carbon and 0.70 per cent manganese. Some breakage and etching occurs as the rods become small, but this is considered preferable to using softer rods, which may kink and cause tangling of the charge. This paper describes the impact of natural ventilation pressure (NVP) on the Nuclear Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico (WIPP). The WIPP site is a U.S. Department of Energy underground facility for the disposal of low level radioactive transuranic defense generated waste. Because the facility is designed for the storage of nuclear waste, special design considerations are necessary to ensure containment of potential radioactive releases. The main design considerations which influence the ventilation system are the requirements of separate air splits for mining and storage operations and of air filtering before atmospheric discharge in the event of a radioactive release. The leakage between the two air splits must always be from the mining area to the storage area. The transient effects of natural ventilation pressures, caused by seasonal and diurnal surface temperature changes, impact the ventilation characteristics throughout the facility. This paper discusses the measurements taken to quantify the changes in NVP and the engineered systems designed to mitigate against the effects of NVP.

Researchers at the University of Alabama have developed a method for producing fuzzy linguistic models of mineral processing equipment directly from engineering data. These fuzzy linguistic models rely exclusively on data collected from the processing systems being modeled and do not presuppose an understanding of the physics of the system. The fuzzy linguistic models use descriptive rules and explicit membership functions that provide a precise, nonmathematical description of the processing equipment. A genetic algorithm is employed to simultaneously select rules and tune membership functions used in the fuzzy models. The result is an extremely flexible approach to modelling that is applicable in a variety of linear and nonlinear systems. The effectiveness of this approach to modelling is demonstrated using a four-input, two-output model of a grinding circuit.

"For the comprehensive recovery ofV, Ti, Fe in vanadium-titanium magnetite in the process of pre-reduction-electric furnace smelting, it is expected that vanadium oxide is reduced into molten iron and titanium oxide is available in the slag. Thus the effect of slag basicity, the content of MgO, MnO and CaF 2 of slag content on the separation of slag and molten iron and the comprehensive recovery of V, Ti, Fe were investigated. The results show that increasing slag basicity, MgO, MnO and CaF2 are all beneficial to the separation of slag and molten iron. Higher slag basicity and the addition of CaF2 strengthen the reduction of vanadium oxide, and inhibite the reduction of titanium oxide, which are in favour of the recovery ofV and Ti. However, the addition ofMgO, MnO was not efficient for the comprehensive recovery ofV, Ti, Fe. For the vanadium-titanium magnetite of Panxi in China, the recovery of Fe was over 98%, the recovery ofV in molten iron was over 85% and the Ti02 content in slag was about 43% under the optimal conditions of slag phase type.IntroductionIt is well known that there are abundant vanadium-titanium magnetite resources which are located in Panzhihua of Sichuan Province[!]. At present the vananium-titanium magnetite concentrates are smelted in the blast furnace, which just make use of iron and vanadium, but lots of titanium is discarded in the slag. At the same time, the process has a large number of disadvantages, such as low recovery of vanadium, long route, pollutions, large investment and expenditure of energy[2-3]. In recent years, in order to efficiently utilize the vanadium-titanium magnetite concentrates, several new non-blast furnace processes have been proposed, such as pre-reduction-electric furnace, pre-reduction-grinding separation and so on[4]. This paper aims to present the evolution of the mining method in the Prince Lyell orebody. Initial strategy and practical experience are detailed as are the reasons for and benefits of changes to the method since 1972 when underground mining began. This section of the paper starts with ten series and concludes with 40 series which was completed in 1989/90.In addition, to update the series of papers written by various authors over the past ten years on Mount Lyell, a review of the experience in the current 50 series lift of mining will be given. As well, the basic planning guidelines are discussed for 60 series - the final lift of the Prince Lyell orebody.

Due to the structural nature of the orebodies mined by open stoping it has been necessary to review mining methods. In-the-hole hammer drilling proved to be the solution to many problems encountered in horizontal percussion drilling.

Historical production data and reserve decline rates can be used both to predict future coal production rates and to estimate when the reserve will be depleted. Reserve estimates inferred herein from historical production data and decline rates are commonly lower than estimates made from geologic data. The latter include significant amounts of lower quality (deeper, thinner, higher sub) coal which may be mined when the better deposits are depleted.

Longwall mines typically use some form of standing support for secondary roof support in longwall tailgate entries. Although there have been several new support products developed for this application, there remains no universal design criteria to optimize the application of these support technologies. The requirement for optimization and proper support selection is to understand the degree of control that the support has on the ground behavior. The ground reaction curve and numerical modeling was used to evaluate the impact of standing support on ground behavior. LaModel was used to evaluate the impact of standing support on main roof and floor behavior and pillar yielding. The conclusion drawn from this study was that standing supports do not have sufficient capacity to control main roof or floor loading or prevent the resulting convergence of the tailgate entry. However, it is imperative that this “uncontrollable convergence” be considered in the support design to prevent premature failure of the support. A FLAC model was used to evaluate the near-seam roof and floor behavior in conjunction with the global vertical and horizontal stresses. The model suggests that standing roof supports can have some impact on the ground behavior as the elastic response of the rock is exceeded and rock structure deteriorates from the stress concentrations that develop around the tailgate opening. During this phase, the capacity and stiffness of the standing support can be critical to the stability of the opening, as eventually the rock mass will be transformed into a partially detached structure whose weight must be supported by the standing support. This work is part of a ground control program of research at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) aimed at improving mine safety by reducing roof fall injuries and fatalities.
