As the usage of BIM increased in the construction industry, some construction owners started exploring the use of BIM for maintaining their facilities. Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBIE), a spreadsheet data format suggested in 2007 to manipulate building information, is considered as one of the solutions that would facilitate the process of transferring information from BIM to applications for facilities management. Several BIM and Computer Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) applications offer functions to export or import the COBIE data. To facilitate the process of generating the COBIE data out of Building Information Model, some add-in applications, such as COBIE Toolkit for Revit, also were developed. However, most of these applications handle a limited amount of COBIE data. Professionals using these add-in applications therefore sometimes end up spending a significant amount of time to add additional data manually to the COBIE data file. To automatically get a data-rich COBIE file, we developed a prototype application that extracts information from Revit, which is one of the BIM authoring tools, stores them in an external database, and then produces the COBIE file using information stored in the database. We applied our application to a pilot project and produced 8 COBIE worksheets automatically, which demonstrated a significant amount of time saving. This paper presents how our prototype application produces 8 COBIE data sets automatically. It also addresses our attempt to handle more COBIE data sets.

Materials for stronger ventilation tubing for underground use in hardrock mines were developed. The new material composites were evaluated in performance characteristics and compared to currently used materials. The materials were compared on tear, tensile, puncture and flammability properties. Based on cost versus performance data, a polyester film bonded to a polyester fabric was selected as the candidate material for field testing. Ventilation tubing fabricated from the selected material was field tested in two underground uranium mines for four-month periods. The test results indicated that the new composite showed an increase in useful life in the majority of applications, However, the cost performance ratio was not significantly improved to warrant commercialization of the product. When connected directly to some blowers, the material in close proximity to the blower deteriorated. However, material which was punctured or torn by mechanical means did not have further propagation of the tear. The high tear strength of the material prevented further damage. Improved methods of repairing inflated ventilation tubing were investigated and developed. All the repair methods were portable and self-contained. Repair kits based on adhesives, pressure sensitive tapes, and mechanical means were evaluated. Plier staplers and patch systems based on pressure sensitive adhesive proved to be most functional.

Molten silicate salts, the important industrial byproducts termed "slags," are known to be electrolytic conductors at furnace temperatures. This property is due to their partial dissociation into ions with the ion kind and size being closely related to the slag composition. Ionic conductance, in liquids, is a function of the viscosity, which in turn is a function of the temperature. It could be anticipated, therefore, that a semi-log plot of conductivity vs. reciprocal absolute temperature might yield a straight line, in the case of molten silicates and salts. As liquids, the viscosity of these slags should follow the Shepard1 relationship: log viscosity = A/T + B Then, if the resistance of the molten slag is directly proportional to the viscosity: log Rs = A/T + B Resistance measurements of molten halide salts,2 and silicate salts34 by various investigators have, indeed, shown this straight line relationship between resistance and temperature. A further relationship between the conductivity versus the degree of ioni-zation, the size of the ions, and the slag composition is, also, to be expected. Large ions, and fewer ions, would move more slowly in a potential field and could not carry as much current as smaller, more numerous, and mobile, ions. Conductivity, therefore, would be smaller in the presence of such large ions and higher slag viscosities. The conductivity-composition relationship is of considerable interest in the case of the industrial slags produced in iron blast furnaces, and non-ferrous smelting furnaces. These slags usually approximate three component systems with several minor components as impurities. At least one of the major components is commonly purchased for the sole purpose of rendering the slag less viscous at a reasonable furnace temperature. Should the conductivity be related rather directly to the concentration of such a purchased slag component (that is, CaO) instrumental measurement and control at the furnace might be possible. Modern tele-metric control methods in aqueous chemical process industries are often based on the property of conductivity of solutions, and its variation with composition. Investigators3 of the phenomenon of electrical conductivity in molten blast furnace slags have established that these systems show lines of equal conductivity on their ternary diagrams at one temperature level. These isocon-ductivity lines form closed contours on the diagrams, and at times, minimum areas occur at which these contours are essentially closed down to a point. The conductivity reading at such a point, at one temperature , would, of course, locate one on the diagram, and give the slag composition. Research in this field is understandably scanty. This paper describes an online control system and simulation environment for reheating furnaces. The system can be configured for implementing manual control as well as automatic control using either look-up tables or online model predictions. The simulator is also used for offline generation of optimized normal operation and delay setpoints for look-up tables and generating ideal heating curves for model-based control. Finally, it is employed to compare the performance of the above control strategies over a typical period of operation of a pusher-type reheating furnace. As the problem of inclusions in steel has become increasingly important, more and more attention has been paid to the source of the oxide inclusions in steel. In killed steels the oxide inclusions are traceable to the reaction of deoxidizers with the iron oxide dissolved in the steel during the refining period of the open-hearth heat. In a large class of steel known as "rimming steel" the action of the steel during solidification depends entirely on the gas evolved, and this evolution in turn is controlled by the amount of iron oxide in the liquid steel in the mold. It is therefore of great importance to be able to determine the amount of iron oxide dissolved in steel and to devise methods for the control of iron oxide in any class of steel. The object of the present investigation was to obtain a true value of the oxygen content of liquid steel. If the steel has not been deoxidized, the greater percentage of the oxygen is present as iron oxide in solution.

Arguably, one of the most significant technological breakthroughs that had been experienced during the period when British Coal was the major coalmine operating company in the UK, the use of rockbolts as principal support in underground roadways brought with it the need to re-assess the technical knowledge, management controls and legislative frameworks associated with the support of mine workings. Following a major roof fall in a roadway supported principally using rockbolts in which fatalities occurred, the process of the design of rockbolted support and the systems and procedures that had been put in place to control its use in the UK were further reviewed. The paper discusses the outcome of these reviews, and how the incident initiated a major new interest in strata control research in the UK against the background of the fragmentation of the ownership of the mines following the sale of the former British Coal assets at the end of 1994, together with the proposed introduction of new strata control legislation in 1996.

A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as zone C, is a mine recoverable 432,000 t at 18.1 g/t Au & 46 g/t Ag. Mining will be by a combination of open pit and underground at a rate of 100,000 t per annum. Processing will be by SAG mill, gravity circuit and CIL plant. A diatreme breccia, localised at an intersection of structures and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are indicative of a strong porphyry association. Typical epithermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineralisation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100 m strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralizing fluids were sourced from a diatreme margin and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are interpreted to be derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split, which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource, and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting.

At ISCOR the quantitative determination of the structural properties of coke is done with a Leitz-TAS Image Analysis System. A reflected light microscopic image of a coke sample is converted into a binary image and stored in computer memory or on hard disc. By means of mathematical and stereological techniques the system can transform the images electronically. A lightpen can be used to determine the sequence of these operations. TASIC, which is based on BASIC language, is used as the program language on the computer. The majority of the programs are written by the user to ensure satisfactory results for specific studies. The computer controls the whole system, including the movement of the microscope stage, focusing, transformation and measurement of the image and data processing. The computer is also applied for establishing statistical correlations between the structural and other coke and coal parameters as well as for graphics and predictions of the coke structure. Factors affecting the structural properties of coke are discussed and conclusions are drawn.

The Bureau of Mines recently tested a sideboard device that is designed to act as an extension of conventional brattice, thus improving face ventilation of developing room-and-pillar-type coal mining. In these laboratory tests, an 8-foot-long rigid sideboard was mounted vertically along the left fender of a full-scale-model ripper-type continuous mining machine, rising to the mine roof to provide an air seal. It extended from the auger support frame pivot point outby along the fender. A novel water spray manifold was used to form an air seal between the sideboard and brattice. Tests showed improvement in face ventilation with the prototype device, and also demonstrated that water sprays can form an effective air seal over a fairly wide pressure range. Based on this preliminary study, subsequent improvements may make the sideboard concept much more effective, thus affording a simple, inexpensive technique to improve the effectiveness of face ventilation.

Occupational exposure to hand-arm vibration through the use of powered hand tools can result in reductions in tactile sensitivity, grip strength and manual dexterity. In fact, even acute exposures to vibration cause shifts in vibrotactile thresholds in exposed fingers (2,4,5). Although reductions in tactile sensitivity after acute vibration exposures are transient, cellular changes associated with this shift in sensitivity could lead to the more permanent reductions in tactile sensitivity that are a common symptom of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Methods Animals. Male Sprague Dawley rats (6 weeks of age) were used for all experiments. Animals were housed in AAALAC accredited facilities, and all procedures were approved by the NIOSH Animal Care and Use Committee and were in compliance with the CDC guideline for care and use of laboratory animals. Vibration exposures were performed by restraining rats in a Broome-style restrainer, and securing their tails to the vibration platform using 6 mm wide straps that were placed over the tail every 3 cm. Restraint control animals were treated in an identical manner except that the tail platform was set on isolation blocks instead of a shaker. Tail temperature and current perception thresholds (CPTs). Rats were exposed to 4 h of tail vibration (125 Hz, 49 m/s2), or restraint. Tail temperature was collected prior to and immediately following the exposure using an infra-red camera. Sensory neuron function was assessed by measuring CPTs with a Neurometer (Neurotron, Baltimore, MD). Transcutaneous nerve stimulation was applied to the C10 region of the tail. Three frequencies were used to test specific fiber types (5 Hz – C, 250 Hz - Ad, and 2000 Hz – Aß). The intensity of the stimulus was automatically increased in small increments until the rat flicked its tail. Tests at each frequency were repeated until the animals displayed 2 responses that were within 2 CPT (or 0.02 mA) of each other (2-4 tests/animal). CPT tests were performed prior to the exposure, immediately following the exposure, and 24 h after the exposure. Data Analyses. Temperatures were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA with animal as a random variable. ANCOVAS were used to analyze the CPTs at each frequency. Temperature at the time of the CPT test was used as a covariate, and animal was used as a random variable Results Tail temperatures declined between pre and post exposure (F(1,25) = 62.85, p < 0.001; mean ± sem pre 25.96°C ± 0.42, post 20.71°C ± 0.77), but were back to baseline levels by 24 h after the exposure in both groups of rats. The ANCOVAs demonstrated that exposure to a single bout of vibration did not alter sensitivity of C (5Hz) or Ad (250 Hz) fibers to stimulation.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report addresses issues involved in using a limited number of training apparatus to give hands-on self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) training to a succession of miners, and provides guidance regarding methods for minimizing the spread of infectious diseases. Procedures used for preventing the spread of infectious organisms in dentistry, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training, and scuba training are examined. The sanitizing methods of three organizations that require individuals to insert the mouthpiece as part of the SCSR donning sequence are discussed. It was found that each of these organizations was able to render their mouthpiece assemblies microbe free simply and inexpensively.

The response of Inconel "700" to heat treatment has been studied by light and electron microscopy combined with X-ray and electron diffraction techniques. A heat treatment which vesults in low ductility for this alloy appears to be associated with the formation of MC carbide in a Widmanstdtten distribution. This type of precipitation can be suppressed by suitable heat treatment with concurrent increase in ductility. Various other phases precipitated in this alloy are also identified. RECENT studies of commercial nickel base su peralloys have demonstrated the importance of the morphology of carbide phases upon physical properties.&apos; For example, empirical heat treatment studies applied to Nimonic "80" and Inconel "X" have resulted in prescribing double aging treatments for optimum physical properties. These treatments have subsequently been related micro-structurally to grain boundary carbide morphology.2 The purpose of this study was to obtain information about the morphology and identity of some of the phases precipitated in Inconel "700" after heat treatment. It was hoped that some correlation could be made of micro structure with heat treatment similar to that observed with Inconel "X" and Nimonic "80." EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens were obtained from a hot-rolled bar of Inconel "700" of the following composition: C Mn Fe S Si 0.10 0707 0.42 0.007 0.12 Cu Cr -A1 -Ti- Co Mo Ni 0.02 -14.90 TM 2.22 27.61 2.92-- Bal. Specimens were prepared in the following heat-treated conditions: (A) 2275°F for 2 hr WQ (B) 2275°F for 2 hr WQ + 2000°F for 1 hr (C) 2275°F for 2 hr WQ + 1600°F for 48 hr. (D) 2275°F for 2 hr WQ + 2000°F for 1 hr + 1600°F for 48 hr. Empirical stress-rupture studies had shown that treatment (D) resulted in optimum stress-rupture life and ductility. Treatment (C), although giving a good aging response, resulted in low ductility. Treatments (A) and (B), respresenting individual. steps in treatments (C) and (D) were added here for microstructural comparison studies. The procedure was to make an optical and electron microscopic investigation supplemented by X-ray diffraction analysis of electrolytically extracted residues. High-voltage cable couplers are convenient and widely used accessories in modern coal-mine power distribution systems to help extend and retract power-feeder cables throughout a mine. Coupler design has tried to keep pace with the industry&apos;s desire to move to higher distribution levels, but the increase in recorded failures of 15-kV class couplers, which serve the 12.47-kV and above distribution levels, has inhibited this transition. Problems associated with the effects of partial discharge on high-voltage cable couplers are analyzed. The phenomenon of partial discharge is discussed, a testing standard is developed, and various coupler designs are subjected to its requirements. An analysis of test results and results based on field applications are provided.

The correlation of power consumed by a tumbling mill with the dimensions, speed, and load has been attempted by three principal methods. One of these, the torque formula, has been reviewed critically elsewhere. This approach, while analytical, disregards the individual motion and speed of the tumbling bodies and assumes that the gross geometry of the entire load is sufficient to establish the power requirement. A more general approach, using dimensional analysis, has been applied in this laboratory by the present authors, and more recently by Rose. This disregards the internal conditions within the mill entirely and in effect is an empirical procedure for correlating data. Finally, the complete analysis of tumbling mill dynamics as first made by Davis attempts to develop the power requirement from individual ball and rod paths and velocities. Although Davis&apos; result is applicable only at a single speed for a given size and load it could be useful, since his optimum speed is at the upper limits of conventional tumbling mill practice. Where power values predicted by the Davis equation were compared with actual mill requirements, they were found too low for small mills and much too high for the largest mills. This suggested that the agreement with actual intermediate range requirements might be fortuitous, and the development of the equation was examined critically.

But in the years from 2002 to 2016, an unprecedented steep rise in commodities prices that lasted a decade and then took a sharp turn downward had made it hard for gold and silver miners to stay the course.“The last 15 years highlighted some of the structural and inherent challenges that our industry has, from product price uncertainty to long lead times to the capital intensity of our business,” said Mitchell Krebs, president and chief executive officer of Coeur Mining, who was the luncheon speaker at the American Exploration & Mining Association’s 122nd Annual Meeting held Dec. 5-9, 2016, in Reno, NV.Looking back, Krebs said, “We were given this enormous gift of a commodities super cycle, and the industry kind of blew the opportunity.” While gold prices rose 319 percent and silver prices rose more than 200 percent over the 2002 to 2016 period, the XAU index of 30 gold and silver mining companies’ stock prices went up by only 20 percent.Entering 2016, precious-metals prices have made a comeback, with gold rallying strongly from a six-year low at the start of the year. This time, the industry is ready. Companies are leaner and meaner, with lower costs, reduced debt and an increased focus on higher grades and quality ounces. Although opportunities were missed in the past, the industry has got its act together and is now well positioned to take advantage of a price upswing and even to show profits when prices fall, as they did in August 2016, pushed down by a strong dollar."

Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL) of drilled shafts requires 1.5-in (38-mm) or 2-in (51-mm) I.D. sonic access tubes to be installed inside the steel reinforcement cage. The sonic access tubes do not contribute to the structural capacity of the drilled shaft. The proposed use of Ischebeck TITAN T73/56 CSL/Hollow Threaded Rebar for Cross Hole Sonic Logging Access Tubes Combined with Longitudinal Concrete Reinforcing in Drilled Shafts (patent pending) is discussed as an alternative method of construction and CSL probe access. The T73/56 hollow threaded rebar/sonic access tube performs as a high strength rebar while at the same time creating a 2.2-in (56-mm) I.D. sonic access tube. The deformed high strength hollow bar provides better adhesion to concrete thus reducing the problem of debonding associated with smooth PVC and steel pipe. A cost comparison using conventional rebar with added sonic access tubes is discussed. The use of T73/56 CSL/Hollow Threaded Rebar as a value engineering alternative can reduce both material and labor costs for drilled shaft construction and can provide an advantage where anchor bolt cages and longitudinal reinforcing create congestion.

THE economics of fuel oil must be considered in two aspects; viz., fuel oil as one of a number of competitive fuels and fuel oil as a refined product of petroleum. "Fuel Oil" is usually defined as that product of petroleum which is used in furnaces for the generation of heat by simple combustion. It is true that any product of petroleum used in an internal combustion engine is essentially a fuel oil, but such oils are not included in the class known as "Fuel Oil." The mine, recognized as arguably one of the richest rare earths deposits in the world, is at the center of Molycorps? strategic ?Mine to Magnets? plan. It aims to secure America?s future supply of rare-earth-dependent technologies by developing a strong domestic rare earth industry. Molycorp identifies rare-earth-dependent technologies as those that cannot be produced without rare earth materials. The list of these technologies is long and growing. It encompasses everything from personal electronics and batteries for hybrid cars to permanent magnet generator wind turbines and national defense applications.

The purpose of the present work is to demonstrate the removal of manganese from a neutral leach zinc-rich solution ([Zn] =150 g/L) at 80°C by oxidative precipitation using a gas mixture of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and oxygen (O2). In order to determine the optimum conditions for manganese removal, several bench-scale semi-batch experiments were performed, where the effects of ORP and gas mixing were investigated. These tests showed that SO2/O2 is a fast and effective oxidant for removing manganese down to ppm level as long as the appropriate ORP is attained/maintained and gas transfer kinetics are optimized.
