In constructing a theory of the flow and hardening of metals, v necessarily make use of such phenomena as seem to be universal1 observed in metals. It is, therefore, a matter of concern to the con structors of such mnemonic systems if one or two of the group classific as metals show anomalous behavior. Such egregious phenomena observed in pure or nearly pure iron in the reaction of its mechanic properties to low-temperature annealing after cold work and to increase temperature of testing. In short it has been generally observcd tha iron, as an outstanding exception among metals, increases its hardnes and strength by low-temperature annealing after cold work,' and alt by increase of testing temperature to the range of 150" to 300" C. The investigation here recorded was made then with the object ( ascertaining if similar phenomena were observed in high-purity iro and, if not, to the presence of which impurities these phenomena coul be traced. Experimental Procedure Three kinds of iron were taken for a study of hardening by rehcatin after cold work: 1. Vacuum-melted electrolytic iron; melted in an Arsem furnace in a magnesia crucible. That this iron was of high purity is indicated b a magnetic permeability above 20,000. 2. Electrolytic iron melted in air in a small laboratory furnace. 3. Armco iron, commercial material. These materials in the form of forged bars, annealed at 980" C. in vacuum, were reduced 30 per cent. in thickness by cold rolling and the reheated to temperatures varying from 100' to 500' C. The Rockwe hardness number was measured after each treatment. The results and shown in Fig. 1, curves 1, 2 and 3.

This paper tells the story of the rapid commercial application of stirred milling technology at Anglo American Platinum?s many Concentrators. The first stirred mill ? a 10 000 litre IsaMillTM; the largest at the time, was commissioned in late 2003. The project development work was presented at SAG 2001. This operation was ?proof of concept? and vindicated the decision to scale up the technology; allowing a rapid and extensive roll-out of mainstream regrind mills as well as several further flotation concentrate regrind mills, over the next six years. Currently 23 stirred mills are in operation with 64 MW of installed drive capacity ? this paper describes the projects? roll-out and the significant results achieved to date. Many operational problems have been solved along the way, some of these will be described. The introduction of the technology has seen a step change in metallurgical results and progressively decreasing operating costs.

"Ores with compressive strength lower than 150 MPa are usually easy to be crushed by conventional jaw crushers and cone crushers. However, for hard ores with compressive strength exceeding 150 MPa and 200 MPa and even up to 250 MPa, such as andesite, hard basalt and olivine, it is difficult to reach satisfactory crushing size and yield or difficult to meet service life and stability use requirements of quick-wear parts by using conventional crushers. As continued increase in ore mining depth and constant generation of new type materials, equipment demand for crushing hard ores becomes increasing high. A new type inertia vibrating crusher is designed. It is powered by a high-speed rotating vibration exciter and can obtain required crushing force by adjusting eccentric mass, eccentricity and rotating speed so as to crush various ores with high hardness. This paper introduces the design process of its structure and working principle, discusses the design calculation methods of vibration excitation system, vibration damping and energy storage system and other key mechanism and provides technical references for this type of vibrating crusher.DESIGN PHILOSOPHYThe conventional jaw crusher mainly acquires extrusion force from crank motion to realize crushing. The motor drives the eccentric shaft via the transmission device to bring the moving jaw to swing relative to the stationary jaw. When the moving jaw moves close to the stationary jaw, ores between them are crushed by extrusion; when the moving jaw moves away from the stationary jaw, crushed ores are discharged from the discharge gate at the lower end between the moving jaw and the stationary jaw.The conventional spring cone crusher and the hydraulic cone crusher mainly acquire extrusion force from cranking motion to realize crushing. The motor drives the eccentric sleeve via the transmission device, the moving cone shaft generates an eccentric distance to make cranking motion under the action of the eccentric sleeve. When the moving cone moves close to the stationary cone, ores between them are crushed by extrusion. When the moving cone moves away from the stationary jaw, crushed ores are discharged from the discharge gate at the lower end between the moving cone and the stationary cone under the action of dead weight."

The Mount Isa Copper Concentrator was commissioned in 1973. Since commissioning some significant upgrades have been undertaken such as: • the replacement of the rod mill/ball mill circuit with AG mills and the subsequent conversion of the AG mills to SAG Mills. • the introduction of columns as retreat cleaners in 1987, then reallocated as prefloat cleaners in 1994 and rougher cleaners in 1996.• the repurposing of some rougher capacity to preflotation roughing to remove carbonaceous pyrite and talc in 1994.• the introduction of a Jameson Cell for preflotation cleaning in 2000. • the expansion of the rougher and cleaner circuits in 2002 with the inclusion of 6 x 100 m3 Wemco cells to replace the capacity lost to preflotation and to increase residence time and improve recovery. In 2013 work commenced to replace the cleaner circuit after 40 years of operation. The new cleaner circuit, consisting of 3 x B5400/18 Jameson Cells, replaced the rougher cleaner columns, cleaners, recleaners and retreat Agitair banks and was commissioned in Sep 2015. The new cleaner circuit was configured as two cells in series producing the final concentrate and a cleaner scavenger cell to supplement the existing Wemco cleaner scavenger cells. THERE are a number of effects that can cause material damping or internal friction. Some of these are frequency dependent, such as the thermo-elastic effect' and the stress-induced ordering.' Others depend on the amplitude of vibration, i.e., the damping related to the motion of dislocations3 and that due to magneto-mechanical hysteresis.' While many of these effects have been studied, only the magneto-mechanical effect has found extensive practical application. It is the principal source of damping in the current blade material in steam turbines.A magneto-mechanical hysteresis loop is seen in Fig. 1. If an unmagnetized, polycrystalline wire of a material exhibiting magneto-mechanical hysteresis, such as an Fe-14 pct A1 alloy, is twisted in torsion, a relation between shear stress and shear strain y is observed as indicated. The stress-strain curve does not follow Hooke's law -dashed line. Instead, the strain y increases nonlinearly and partly irreversibly, due to the motion of ferromagnetic domain walls,* until a critical stress is reached, which in this case is about 3,500 psi. If the applied stress is raised further, the strain appears to increase linearly and reversibly in accordance with Hooke's law, since all domains are now aligned in easy directions of magnetization nearest to the direction of the applied stress, and plastic flow has not yet started noticeably. On removing the applied stress, a remanent shear strain y, is observed, which is related to the irreversible magnetostriction of the material.' The machine for the hybrid method called JACSMAN is ordinarily a dual shaft machine. Each shaft has augers at three different levels and nozzles for jetting at two different levels. The distance between two shafts may be changed according to the particular requirements. Figure 4 shows single shaft and a treated soil column created by the method. The diameter of the auger is 1.0 m. As the jetting nozzles locate at the periphery of the auger, jetting can achieve the additional treated soil column beyond the diameter of the auger. The diameter of the jetting improvement is fixed at 2.3 m.

It appears that in the earlier days of anthracite coal mining, 1824-25, the Lehigh region mined 76 per cent. of all the coal sent to market. During the same period Wyoming sent 12 and 5 per cent. respectively, whilst the Schuylkill sent 11 and 18 per cent., the number of tons marketed being in those days very small indeed. In the year 1828 the Schuylkill region mined over one-half of all the coal sent to market, and continued to do so for thirty years (with the exception of the year 1831), until 1858 ; since that date the production has declined very steadily in comparison with the other regions, until, in 1876, it was only 34 per cent. Wyoming, in the year 1820, was mining 40 per cent., but the production of all the regions was very small; in six years it declined to 5 per cent., increased to 34 per cent. in 1831, declined to 10 per cent. in 1838. Since which time the increase has been gradual, until 1873-75 Wyoming produced over 50 per cent. of all the anthracite coal sent to market. In 1867 the production exceeded that of Schuylkill, and has continued to do so since that time. In the year 1876, during the existence of the "coal combination," Wyoming lost 9 per cent.; during the same time Lehigh gained 7 and Schuylkill 2 per cent. over their relative production of the preceding year, the decrease of Wyoming being two and a half million tons, the increase of the Lehigh one million, the decrease of the Schuylkill nearly three-quarters of a million. The extraordinary production of the Lehigh region at a time of decreased demand and in opposition to an agreement with the other regions to limit the supply to the supposed demand mas the cause of the disagreement which ultimately broke up the combination of the great coal-producing and carrying companies. "The rising popularity of microwave heating in mineral processing has fuelled the need for knowledge concerning dielectric properties of minerals. Dielectric property and microwave absorption property of anthracite were measured over a temperature range of 20-100°C at 2.45GHz by using an open-ended coaxial sensor measurement system. The results show that the dielectric constant, loss factor and loss tangent increase with temperature rising at 2.45GHz. Microwave absorption properties of anthracite are highly dependent on temperature and frequency. At frequency of 2.45GHz frequency used in microwave metallurgy, anthracite is suitable for reducing agent to achieve fast elevation of temperature then returning to original state. The research will be helpful in explaining the thermal running of microwave dielectric heating the anthracite.IntroductionThe application of microwave heating in minerals processing and treatment has recently attracted great interest from the metallurgical industry. Compared with conventional heating methods, the advantages of microwave heating include rapid and selective heating, uniform distribution, high efficiency, fast on and off switching as well as flexible and modular design[l-3]. As a result of these advantages, microwave heating has been applied in a variety of mineral processing and extractive metallurgy, such as microwave-assisted ore grinding, microwave heating for carbothermic reduction and acid leaching of ilmenite ore, microwave drying, microwave-assisted roasting and smelting of sulfide concentrate, microwave-assisted spent carbon regeneration and microwave-assisted waste management [ 4-6]. Though the application of microwave heating in the metallurgical industry is promising, further studies on the interaction between microwave radiation and minerals and its effects are highly desired to develop innovative techniques for minerals processing and ore treatment using microwave heating [7]."

The Bureau of Mines developed a radiotracer method for detecting the contribution of selected components and additives to thermally induce deposits of turbine aircraft fuels. Fuels were examined before and after 52 weeks of storage at 130° F. Of particular concern was the influence of aromatic hydrocarbon fuel constituents on thermal-stability quality of jet fuels during storage. A microfuel coker test apparatus was used to thermally stress the test fuels and blends, and the resultant contribution to deposits of selected fuel components, labeled with carbon-14, was determined by radioactive-counting techniques. Ninety-one blends of five test fuels with carbon-14-labeled fuel additives or components were prepared, tested, stored for 52 weeks at 130° F, and reanalyzed for deposit-forming tendency. These additives included two anti-oxidants, a metal deactivator, and a corrosion inhibitor. Of the labeled hydrocarbon fuel systems studied, the greatest reaction was observed in blends containing methyl-and ethyl-substituted indenes. Other aromatic types also showed some contribution to the deposits. Three of the additives showed a marked tendency to degrade and react during storage and thermal stress. A cresol antioxidant, however, barely contributed to deposit formation. Oleic acid interacted with cadmium present in aircraft fuel systems and produced deleterious effects upon the thermal-stability quality of the fuel.

Fresh cyanide solution was treated by near UV light with the assistance of photocatalysts. Cyanide was oxidized mainly to cyanate. Photochemical behavior of the anatase and rutile forms of TiO2 was compared. It is found that anatase has a much higher activity than that of rutile. Bubbling of oxygen in the reactor showed no appreciable increase in cyanide oxidation, implying that the reaction is surface controlling. A very interesting finding in this study is that a natural mineral, ilmenite, can replace chemical titanium dioxide as the photocatalyst. Ilmenite without any treatment did not catalyze the oxidation of cyanide. But, after being roasted at high temperature with oxygen, the oxidation was enhanced dramatically. The mechanisms of photooxidation of cyanide and the roasting of ilmenite are proposed.

"The ongoing expansion of the Oak Creek Power Plant in Oak Creek, Wisc., includes a tunnel bored in rock that connects to four vertical intake shafts approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) offshore in Lake Michigan. In 2004, Case Foundation Company was awarded a lump sum contract to install these intake shafts. In spite of delays that shortened the May to September construction season by up to 50%, four shafts and liner assemblies were drilled in 2005 and 2006. The shafts were connected to the tunnel in 2007 by mining upward to reach the lower portion of each liner and then removing its internal bulkheads so that lake water fl owed into the tunnel. The project is one of the largest private construction projects ever undertaken in Wisconsin. The expansion adds 1,230 megawatts of generation. In addition to the tunnel and offshore work, there will be 16 miles (26 km) of railroad track and 6 million cubic yards (4,600,000 m3) of earth work. The 27 ft (8.2 m) diameter tunnel, drilled some 150 ft (46 m) below the surface of Lake Michigan, originates onshore at a pump house. A structural slurry wall was constructed as the foundation for the pump house. The tunnel passes to the south near the current water intake before bearing east toward the new offshore intake shafts, which are 12 ft (3.6 m) diameter by 108 ft (33 m) long steel liner assemblies. These were grouted in place from approximately 3 ft (1 m) above the crown of the intake tunnel and then to 20 ft (6 m) below the lake bottom.Site GeologyOffshore. The plant site is north of the Racine-Milwaukee county line in an area affected by glacial activity. The soil conditions encountered at each shaft location were consistent, with noticeable variations occurring in the top of rock elevations that sloped downward from the innermost to the outermost shaft."

Mining-metallurgical complex is the base of any economics and influences directly on practically all branches of world economics. Therefore the task of estimation and selection of investment decisions in mining industry adequate to modern market conditions and the task of decreasing multidimensional alternatives selection uncertainty are very actual. An uncertainty of investment alternatives is explained by a number of reasons, main of which are a presence of several investors types, an unstable situation on the market and an absence of evident relations between appraisal criteria used. Maximum increasing of formalization and objectivity of information technologies applied for an estimation permits to reduce the uncertainty of investment variants estimation. A number of principled innovations, allowing to solve the task of decreasing of multidimensional alternatives selection uncertainty, are introduced into the information technology of estimating and selecting investment decisions in mining-metallurgical branch, developed by us. In the article the necessity of including a cognitive model into developed selection mechanism, which allows to take into consideration inter-influences of used critera, has been grounded. Besides, the forecasting model considering interconnected time rows has been applied for increasing the world conjuncture forecast quality. Further in the article main metrics types have been characterized and application of weighted Chebyshev’s metrics as the most compromised from all studied metrics for variants selecting has been proved, and also the developed procedure of directional search of effective compromise decisions has been described. Brief characteristic of designed instrumental means of multi-criteria variants estimation and selection finalizes the article. In conclusion expedience and efficiency of using the developed information technology for reduction of multidimensional alternatives selection uncertainty have been grounded.

This study considers realistic data for a planned open pit iron ore mine, but is applicable to any open pit situation. By interpolating drill hole data, grades are generated for a rectangular block model. Each blockÆs grade designation vector has components for each analyte (chemical element or compound) influencing ore value. Interpolation by means of geostatistical kriging leads to each block being assigned its expected value, and thus underestimates the overall grade variability. Alternatively, interpolation by means of conditional simulation is a method that implements random sampling from an infinite population of solutions. Each conditional simulation has appropriate overall grade variability, but estimating any blockÆs mean and variance requires sampling from multiple conditional simulations. For a block model, an ore/waste selection criterion maximises the expected tonnage at a target grade. This criterion is a linear composite of the grade components, with positive coefficients for the beneficial analyte (iron) and negative coefficients for the deleterious analytes (such as silica, alumina and phosphorus).Although conditional simulation gives the same expected grade as kriging for each block, the expected maximum tonnage of ore selectable at a target grade may differ from that obtainable from the kriged solution. We apply the linear composite selection criterion to each of 25 conditional simulations, as well as to the kriged block model. The resulting distribution of product tonnage is confirmed to have an expected tonnage that is over 20 per cent greater than that of the kriged model. The method also enables a selection probability to be computed for each block, and thus a probabilistic pit boundary distribution to be identified and used in mine planning. Proposed extensions will consider risk-based scheduling of the multiple selection solutions through minimisation of a derived æstress factorÆ and treating the mining process as an iterative system with actual or artificial ædepletionsÆ modelled in line with the mine plan, using the updated state (with new information) to re-evaluate the mine plan for subsequent periods.CITATION:Everett, J E and Grobler, F, 2013. Calcium silicate slag (Di-Cal) and magnesium oxide condensate (MgO) are the by-products of magnesium smelting operations, As these oxides have acid neutralizing and metal precipitating properties, it was decided to examine their reactions with (a) individual heavy metals and (b) with a mixture of metals in solution, The resulting solid reaction products were further tested with respect to the stability of the contained metals, The stability of the solid precipitates were examined as a function of the method of precipitation and as function of the solution pH With respect to the method of precipitation, the performance of Di-Cal and MgO was compared to the performance of lime, an industry standard for heavy metal precipitation, Four different pH solutions (4,0, 5,0, 7,0 and 1 LO) were used to study the effect of pH on the stability of the precipitates. It was found that Di-Cal, in most cases, produced the most stable precipitates and thus, outperformed lime, Metal precipitates prepared by the addition of MgO were the most soluble for each metal studied, except for Se,

With copper at its host depressed price in several years, producers are looking at every opportunity to cut costs in order to continue operating. Some of the measures that have been applied by different companies include reduction in manpower, high grading, and in some cases partial shutdowns. The most beneficial cost cutting measure implemented by Southern Peru Copper Corporation was to steepen the slope of the final pit limit from a conservative 37 degrees to an average of 48 degrees. By doing so, substantial cash outlays were saved. Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) operates two open pit copper mines and concentrators in the southern part of Peru, about 150 kilometers from the Chilean bordar. The Toquepala Mine went into production in 1960 and the Cuajone Mine in 1976. Both mines use shovel, truck and train operations. The trains, which haul ore to the crusher or waste to the dumps, are loaded either directly by shovels or by a transfer system. The Toquepala Concentrator treats an average of 43,000 tons per day and the Cuajone Concentrator an average of 55,000 tons per day. Concentrates are shipped via a 200 kilometer railroad to the port city of Ilo where the SPCC smelter is located. The annual production in the smelter from both mines is 290,000 tons of blister copper.

Macroscopic characteristics of a complicated mine ventilation is remarked to build an expert system for mine safety in the Taiheiyo coal mine, Hokkaido, Japan. To gain the characteristics a large number of simulation were performed with varying aerodynamic resistance of the branches with regulator in mine ventilation network. The principal results of the study are as follows, (1) Pressure loss diagram for ventilation network with main and auxiliary fans enables capability of air circulation in the network. (2) H-Q (pressure-quantity) diagram gives capacity of air quantity In a network with main and auxiliary fans. (3) When airflow rate, [] through branch qi is changed by opening/closing regulator set in the branch, air flow rate, [], through branch p can be represented by the empirical formula. [ ] where Api and Qp,o are the constant coefficients. (4) Macroscopic characteristics mentioned above are available to make rules in an expert system for escaping route at emergency.

During 1999, there were six fatalities in surface mines involving haulage equipment colliding with a smaller vehicle or person, or backing over the edge of a dump point. All of these fatalities can be attributed to the extensive blind areas around large haulage equipment. Researchers at NIOSH are investigating various technologies that can be used to monitor these blind areas and provide information on nearby obstacles to an operator. So far, the technologies listed below have been tested on dump trucks used in surface mining. The selection of these systems was based on their ability to handle the tough environmental conditions found in mining operations and how well they detected obstacles out to 40 or 50 feet beyond the rear of large dump trucks. Some of the manufacturers of available collision warning and camera systems are also listed.
