In a paper, " A Study of the Elimination of Impurities from Copper-Mattes, etc.," presented to the Institute at the Atlantic City meeting, February, 1898, I gave certain figures which I called the relative slaggability in refining copper. In that paper* will be found the following pertaining to this subject: Relative Slaggability in Refining Converter-Copper. Cu. Pb. Bi. Sb. As. Se, Te. 1 129.5 1.13 7.30 5.22 0.81 and Relative Slaggability in Refining Electrolytic Copper. Cu. Pb. Sb. As. 1 41 9.97 7.13 Since there is a, possibility of misinterpretation of the above values, the following supplementary information may seem justified in explanation. As the contents of impurities in the unrefined or crude copper were unknown, the contents of the refined copper were substituted therefor, merely in order to obtain the two series of figures for comparison. These figures are higher than they would be had I been able to take the correct ones for the unrefined copper. The high figure, 129.5, for lead, in the case of converter-copper, means simply that more lead was slagged from the crude copper than remained in the refined copper; or, in definite values, that to 1 per cent. of copper slagged, the ratio of the lead gone into the slag and the lead remaining in the refined copper is 129.5 : 100. It is possible to approximate the true slaggability much more closely by adding the quantities of impurities in the refined copper to those in the slag, thus obtaining values for the crude copper in which the amounts volatilized are ignored (the latter

This report on the physical and chemical properties of crude oils of California is one of a series on the producing districts of the United States. It includes a short discussion of results, tabulated data, and individual analyses of California crudes. Analyses of crude oils from the fields of Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura Counties have been published in Serials 25952 and 26083. The analyses reported in this paper corer samples that were obtained subsequent to the publication of Serials 2535 and 2608. The samples were obtained by members of the San Francisco office of the Bureau of Mines. The collecting of samples was facilitated by the courtesy of representatives of oil companies in California.

Fractal theory was horn in the mid-1970s. Since then, its application has been spreading day by day, from mathematics and geology to areas such as geophysics, physics and material sciences. In this paper, fractal models are developed to characterize particle size distribution and surface area. Theoretical formulas are derived for the computation of fractal dimensions D (size) and D[s] (surface area). The models developed are applied using experimental data of particle size distribution and surface area obtained from the Microtrac Particle Size Analyzer for dust processed by several size reduction devices. The theoretical models and the experimental data are found in good agreement. The fractal dimensions obtained are D = 1.350 to 1.770 and D[s] = 2.058 to 2.584 for fine coal dust particles (< 15 µm) produced by various size reduction mechanisms. The physical meaning of these fractal dimensions is also related to the dust generation processes.

Froth flotation is a selective separation process and rarely used for beneficiation of limestone in the world as compared to other minerals and also mostly known conventional methods of up gradation of ROM including wobbling, selective mining, sorting, preblending etc. Limestone is mainly used in the manufacture of cement, steel and chemical industries. High grade limestone deposits are depleting day by day and the requirement of the industries have to be met by beneficiating the low grade limestone deposits in the world. And because of marginal quality of limestone, it cannot be directly used in cement industry. At ACC Madukkarai cement works, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, full fledged mineral beneficiation process is adopted to enhance the quality of low grade lime stone from 38-42 % CaO to 45-47 % CaO and silica reduced from 19-22 % to 11-13 % by use of oleic acid (commercial grade and vegetable origin) 0.38 kg/ton of limestone and caustic soda 0.05 kg/ton of limestone. SALT bodies in the form of rolls, horses (sometimes called horsebacks), folds, wants and pinches1 have been encountered while driving entries and mining out rooms during the development of the potash mines in New Mexico. Superficially these sporadic salt occurrences appear to be much alike, but closer examination reveals individual characteristics, and after four years of observation it seems possible to divide them into three general groups that may tentatively be called "depositional," "erosional," and "structural." The data collected are not yet sufficient to permit forecasts of their probable location, so that the annoyance of having to mine salt instead of potash could be avoided or lessened. However, the information so far available appears to throw some light on the occurrence of the sylvinite2 bed now being mined, and it is as a progress report that the writer presents the results of his observations. The mines of the United States Potash Co. and the Potash Company of America are about 20 miles northeast of Carlsbad, in Eddy County, N. M. They are on the southwestern flank of the Permian salt basin, which underlies western Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, south-central Nebraska, southeastern Colorado and eastern New Mexico. The cuttings from many oil wells and the cores from the potash tests drilled in this basin indicate that this salt series approached its greatest thick-ness (about 4000 ft.) in the southeastern part of New Mexico and the adjoining portions of Texas, and that the most advanced stages of

It is shown that conditions suitable for the conversion of straight dislocations into helices are common in crystals hardened either through long-range dislocation interaction or by jog formation on dislocation lines. For dislocations other than screw dislocations or dislocations nearly screw in orientation, helices can be formed with the aid of core difhsion at temperatures low relative to the melting point of the material. It is assumed that, once formed, helices will degenerate into dislocation tangles. THE dislocation tangle is one major dislocation arrangement observed by the transmission electron microscope which had not been predicted previously from dislocation theory. Since first being observed, the tangle itself has become important in applied dislocation theory. The Cambridge school (P. Hirsch) bases part of its theory of work hardening upon this phenomenon.&apos; In spite of the fact that the tangle obviously is a structure of prime importance to a cold-worked crystal, until recently relatively little attention has been paid to the question of exactly why or how tangles arise. It was generally assumed at first that cross slip and perhaps jog formation will lead to tangles. However Wilsdorf and schmitz2 concluded that cross slip cannot markedly contribute to the tangles. The Wilsdorfs and Maddin3&apos;* have proposed that tangles arise by means of prismatic dislocation loops and superjogs which are produced by a precipitation of point defects. Dislocations with superjogs or which have joined with prismatic loops are themselves dislocation sources and they can produce new dislocations, a process they call "mushrooming", which then tangle with each other. There is no question that the Wilsdorfs et al. mechanism as well as the cross slip one can pro- duce tangles. However these may not be the only paths leading to tangle formation. In this paper we wish to consider another way tangles can form. Our work will be based on the theory of dislocation screw We wish to show that whenever a crystal is cold-worked there always is present a "driving force" leading to helix formation and thus to tangle formation. We do not expect to observe well-developed, regular helices in cold-worked metals. Rather we would expect that after a helix is formed random interactions with nearby dislocations will cause a well-developed helical dislocation to go over into an irregular form. A dislocation tangle is, of course, a grouping of dislocations with irregular forms. Therefore we feel that, in accounting for the formation of dislocation tangles, it is sufficient to show that many dislocations in a cold-worked crystal will take on helical form. The crucial step is helix formation. In order to have a straight dislocation assume a helical form, diffusion of vacancies, or interstitials, must occur. Our discussion of tangle formation therefore will be limited to crystals which have been deformed at temperatures ranging from about one fifth to half their absolute melting point. In this tem per a ture range appreciable core diffusion is possible. (There is no problem in explaining tangle formation at temperatures greater than half the melting point. At such temperatures dislocation climb through a bulk diffusion of point defects gives an extra degree of freedom to dislocation motion. This extra freedom of motion makes tangle formation easy.) At temperatures much below one fifth the absolute melting temperature diffusion processes are sufficiently slow that helix formation does not occur. Of course helix or tangle formation could occur in material deformed at very low tempera-tures which was subsequently warmed in order to make the thin specimen necessary for electron-microscope examination. Since within the temperature range of approximately one fifth to half the melting temperature the diffusion of point defects in the core of the dislocation is rapid, we can reasonably assume that within

Alluvial valley floors constitute a valuable land resource and have been important to ranching operations in semiarid western United States. This resource may be in jeopardy locally if the alluvial deposits are disturbed by surface mining of coal deposits. Erosion problems caused by poor land-use practices can cause trenching of the unconsolidated alluvium with a consequent lowering of the water table and depletion of soil moisture needed to support vegetation. Historical evidence of this sequence of events is abundant in geologic literature and serves as the basis for assessing potential impacts of surface mining. The potential geomorphic impacts of surface mining on alluvial valley floors with regard to fluvial processes are: (1) disruption of the longitudinal profile followed by valley trenching and high sediment yields downstream and (2) replacement of the excavated alluvium with unconsolidated material that does not have similar physical characteristics and may be susceptible to erosion. Mining may disrupt the existing hydrologic framework affecting streamflow, ground-water levels and water quality of both surface water and ground water. Although functional hydrologic and geomorphic processes are similar, each valley represents a complex environment that does not submit to broad generalizations.

As DEVELOPED up to the end of the Great War, an airplane was essentially a mechanism of wood and fabric, joined and held together by metal fittings and, fastening. The engine and accessories, wire for wheel spokes and other tension members, and the occasional use of metal for interplane struts and the shafts of surface controls required some metal, but essentially it was a. wood and fabric structure. Attempts had been made to use metal for other purposes, such as struts in the drag-trussing of wing panels and for short interplane struts, and Junkers had produced an airplane of iron in 1915. By 1917 he was using steel tubes and duralu-min sheets, securing noteworthy advantages aerodynamically and from the standpoint of weigh PRINCIPLES OF AIRPLANE CONSTRUCTION The loaded weight of airplanes ranges from 500 lb. for the light plane of which we heard so much a short time ago, to about 40,000 lb. The great majority of planes range from 2000 to 10,000 lb. Of this weight from 15. to 30 per cent. is for the dividend-earning load. This percentage is so low that every per cent. saved on the rest of the weight increases the pay load from 3 to 6 per cent. The economic value of every pound that can be saved in designing or constructing a plane is sufficiently great to warrant spending money on refined methods of structural analysis, materials of superior strength properties for a given weight, methods of manufacture which may make possible the use of refinements in structural design, and the like, to an extent unknown heretofore.

Bureau of Mines planer mining tests on the phosphate bed of the Douglas mine, near Drummond, Mont., indicated that a competent bed with a Mohs&apos; scale hardness of 3 to 4 cannot be mined economically with the planer. Although planer mining was feasible where the bed was fractured enough for a 4-inch depth of cut to be consistently maintained, the depth of cut in the competent beds at the Douglas mine did not exceed 0.5 inch. Average production rates were 0.15 ton per minute and 9 tons per man-shift.

Field tests were made on the rate of corrosion of 30 materials used in air preheaters under regular operating conditions, and the buildup of deposits was observed. Twenty-three materials were tested with coal as the fuel on an underfeed stoker and seven with oil, including a short period with pulverized coal as fuel, The plant equipment is described, and pertinent plant operating data are tabulated. Figures 17 and 19 (pp. 24 and 27) give the results of corrosion tests on the uncoated metal test specimens. The information obtained from these tests follows the general pattern described in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 4996, Corrosion and Deposits in Regenerative Air Preheaters. The deposits were similar, and the corrosion rates of Cor-Ten and Mayari-R steel (previously found to be essentially the same at the Harding Street Station using coal) continued to show little difference at the Marion Generating Station using principally oil. The one high-alloy steel tested, type 321, showed a much higher corrosion rate than the low-alloy steel, Cor-Ten.

"Recovery of water is always a major factor in the Beneficiation process. As Preparation Plants become larger the recovery of water for reuse, is a critical cost consideration. Tema Isenmann Inc in conjunction with our sister Company Multotec Manufacturing, has over the years, developed numerous different Screen Panels, Sieve Bends and Static Screens for dewatering. This paper will focus on a new innovation, the TeePee™ Panel which has double the open area of conventional Screen Panels. This results in efficient dewatering (reduced filter cake moistures) which allows for the use of smaller Vibrating Screens or increased capacity on existing Vibrating Screens. A major factor in the efficiency of any Screen Panel, including TeePee™ Panels, is the performance of the Vibrating Screen. If the Vibrating Screen does not have the required gravitational force or screen area to drain it will not dewater efficiently. Therefore a holistic approach has to be taken where the Vibrating Screen needs to operate at an optimal level, in conjunction with the correct Screen Panels, to achieve efficient dewatering. Key performance areas for Vibrating Screens are therefore detailed in this paper with an emphasis on important dewatering criteria. Case studies of different dewatering applications are included, where the use of TeePee™ Panels, has shown a marked improvement over conventional flat Screen Panels in reduction of filter cake moisture content.INTRODUCTION Dewatering can be done in a number of different ways and is largely dependent on the ore type, the particle size distribution and to what extent one needs to dewater will determine the method used. There are a number of different dewatering methods that can be used for particles above 200 micron, including Screen Bowl Centrifuges, Filter Presses, Static Screens, Static Sieve Bends and Vibrating Screens. This paper will focus primarily on Vibrating Dewatering Screens showing improved drainage and a reduction in the filter cake moisture content. KEY PERFORMANCE CRITERIAL FOR VIBRATING DEWATERING SCREENS For clarification the critical key performance criteria for Vibrating Dewatering Screens are set out in this paper. Dewatering Screens Vibrating Dewatering Screens are normally linear motion, either horizontal or inclined at 5 to 7° upwards with a vertical or back sloped plate at 45° to the rest of the screen deck. The back plate will often have screen panels in them to increase the dewatering capability, as shown in Figure 2 below."

Since man began beneficiating ores, a limited number of factors influenced the type of treatment. The ore itself has always been a factor. The first form of concentration was probably hand sorting, and the grade of concentrate and recovery had to be considered from the start. The cost of labor as a factor in mill design did not attain importance until the period following World War I. Power was one of the cheapest commodities available, and consequently power consumption was ignored. That no longer holds true. The present work does nothing to simplify the work of the metallurgist, or designer. On the contrary it adds another element to the design considerations. And while this report concentrates on power consumption, the mill designer must take the other factors into account as well. This study is based on a compilation of data supplied by a number of Western United States copper operations, as well as information from equipment manufacturers. Although its conclusiones apply to other minerals and geographic areas, the information is more precise, when applied to similar ores. The discussion has been divided into sections covering crushing, grinding, and flotation as these are the principal power consuming functions.

"A study is presently underway by the authors to investigate the character of the bit-coal interaction during coal cutting and its influence on the size and shape distributions of the generated dust. An important aspect of this on-going project is the development of acoustic emission (AE) criteria which would make it possible to carry out remote monitoring of coal cutting operations. The on-going AE studies are fundamental in form and were undertaken to evaluate the general feasibility of AE monitoring techniques using simplified coal breakage and cutting procedures. The present paper will focus on the test facilities, experimental techniques, and results associated with linear, single-bit cutting. An AE-transducer, attached directly to the bit, detected AE signals during the cutting process.Experiments have been carried out on seven specimens of coal obtained from the USBM experimental mine at Bruceton, Pennsylvania. Three separate cuts were made for each of two bit angles (10 and 45 degrees) and two bit velocities (0.085 and 0.169 cm/sec), for a total of 12 separate cuts. Data associated with resulting particle size distribution and AE characteristics (major dominant frequency components) will be discussed. Data analysis has also been underway using a computer-based pattern recognition system known as ICEPAK (Intelligent Classifier Engineering Package). This program is able to evaluate over 100 features of an AE event and to make objective comparisons between AE signals associated with different loading or cutting parameters. The results to date show that AE generated during some of the test conditions can be recognized by ICEPAK with a recognition rate of 90% and higher while other conditions cannot at present be separated with a suitable recognition rate. Further analysis of the experimental data is presently underway.The reduction of the severity, and eventual elimination, of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) depends on gaining fundamental understanding in a number of major areas. These include dust generation and entrainment, transportation, suppression, medical effects of dust, and possible treatment. At present a project is underway by the authors to investigate the character of the bit-coal interaction during coal cutting and its influence on the size and shape distributions of the generated dust. An important aspect of this on-going project is the development of acoustic emission (AE) criteria which would make it possible to carry out remote monitoring of coal cutting operations. Suitable on-line analysis of monitored AE data would allow engineers to evaluate factors such as shearer bit conditions and cutting efficiency, and to quantify the particle size and shape distribution of the generateddust. The on-going AE studies are fundamental in form and were undertaken to evaluate the general feasibility of AE monitoring techniques using simplified coal cutting procedures. To date experiments have been carried out on coal under uniaxial compression, linear single-bit cutting, and cutting using a laboratory-scale, single-bit shearer. A brief outline of the overall study has been presented in an earlier paper (Hardy, Shen and Kimble, 1995). This paper will consider the linear single-bit cutting studies in more detail.It is generally accepted today that most solids emit low-level seismic signals when they are stressed or deformed. In this paper this phenomenon will be referred to as acoustic emission (Hardy 1972, 1981, 1989). In essence, the measurement of AE activity in a field or laboratory structure is relatively simple. A suitable transducer is attached to the structure, the output of the transducer is connected to an associated monitoring system, and the AE signals occurring in the structure, due to internal or external stress, deformation, and failure are suitably acquired, pre¬processed and recorded."

Following the introduction of shields to the U.S. longwall mining scene and the steady increase in the number of shield faces during recent years, the occurrence of longwall -ground-control -associated accidents has shown a welcome downward trend. But even though the accident experience is favorable, problems exist. New mining systems, however efficient, have run afoul of roof control. Shield faces have suffered extended stoppages because of roof cavities. Therefore, the Bureau of Mines has reviewed foreign remedial techniques to evaluate their potential for domestic application. Such technology includes cribbing, strain absorbent modules (SAM&apos;S), inflatables, wire meshing, chemical rock stabilization, synthetic foams, and monolithic fills.

The phase behavior of a naturally occurring hydrocarbon system whose critical temperature is near the reservoir temperature has been described. The same volume per cent liquid was observed for the firkt time at three different pressures for isotherms immediately below the critical temperature. The shapes of the isothermal equilibrium constant curves necessary to predict this phenomena are discussed and illustrated. INTRODUCTION The phase behavior of a number of hydrocarbon systems has been reported; however, very little data are available on natural occurring hydrocarbon systems whose critical temperature is near the reservoir temperature. This appeared to be the case for the fluid studied here; therefore the pressure-volume-temperature data for this system were determined for preqentation. METHOD The PVT data were obtained with equipment similar to hat described by Weinaug and Katz,1 consisting principally of a two-section, double-windowed gauge mounted in a conktant temperature air bath. The procedure followed was essentially that used by Katz and Kurata5 except that a cathetom-eter, reading direct to 0.01 cm, was used to determine the height of each extreme phase limit. The system studied was formed by recombining -.vapor and liquid samples from the first stage separator of the well. Portions of these samples were displaced with mercury into the cell which had previously been filled with mercury. A predetermined amount of the liquid sample was introduced, while an excess of vapor was admitted. The resulting mixture was brought to equilibrium at the condition of the separator during sampling. By adding mercury to maintain the pressure, enough vapor was displaced to give a gas/oil ratio within the cell equal to that produced by the separator at the time of sampling. The remaining material was then considered to be equivalent to the reservoir fluid. An analysis of material in the cell, computed from analysis of vapor and liquid samples and the separator gas/oil ratio. is given in Table I. A very extensive spatial and temporal database on benthic infauna and associated sediment metals has been collected for Island Copper Mine on Vancouver Island, B.C. Canada from 1969 (pre-discharge) to 1998 (3 years post-discharge). The tailings deposited as organically impoverished, copper-rich, clays, silts and sands distributed according to particle size, bottom turbidity currents and strong, vertically mixed tidal currents. In addition, a large deposition of coarser waste rock along the north shore of Rupert Inlet contributed substantial material in the shallower, near-field area.
