"The American Consul at Guatemala City reports that the Guatemala Marble Mining Company is preparing to operate a marble quarry about 13 miles from the railroad station of Zacapa, which station is a little over 100 miles from Puerto Barrios, the nearest port from which the product may be shipped. The deposit is extensive, and though somewhat broken up in places, great quantities of sound marble are available. It is claimed that the marble is equal in quality to the best product of the Italian Carrara quarries.Access to the quarry by rail is obtained by a spur track of the International Railways of Central America (Ferrocarril Internacional de Centro America) from Marmol, 3 miles south of Zacapa. This spur is about 5 miles long and terminates at the foot of the mountains. A double-track incline cable-way 2000 feet in length has been constructed to bring the marble down the mountain. From the top of the incline to the quarry there is a railway six miles in length over which the rock will be hauled by two side-geared Shay locomotives."

The Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center (PSHTC) of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) provides engineering and scientific support to the inspectorate personnel of MSHA. One of the Center's myriad roles is to assist in the investigation of mining accidents, especially those involving fatalities. Center personnel utilize forensics to help uncover the causes of accidents and to make technical recommendations on the prevention of future similar mishaps. To exemplify a typical forensic investigation, this paper documents the methodology used in determining the reasons for a boat sinking, which resulted in a double fatality on a mine company pond.

The sensitivity of radiochemical techniques makes possible the study of the initial stage sulfuric acid leaching kinetics of chalcopyrite and other copper sulfide minerals. High-grade Transvaal chalcopyrite was neutron irradiated in a TRIGA reactor to produce radioisotopes copper-64, iron-59, and sulfur-35. Dissolution rates were measured in the time interval zero to 60 minutes during which time significant anomalies were observed. First, an initial period of rapid dissolution lasting a few minutes; second, an arrest or "plateau" region usually lasting from 6 to 10 minutes; third, a second period of dissolution of lesser rate than the first. The effect of solution variables such as pH, oxygen partial pressure, and ferric ion concentration at different temperatures were measured. The initial rate data were correlated by considering the rapid reaction to be due to the dissolution of surface oxidation products or the formation of an iron depleted surface layer. The gold industry has been revolutionized in the last decade by market forces and technological changes. The latter are discussed in this paper, with particular emphasis on carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and heap leaching. The nature and scope of the process development aspects of a gold project are considered, and factors which determine process decisions are outlined, including the choice of CIP versus carbon-in-leach (CIL), agitated leaching versus heap leaching and treatment of ores containing copper and silver. Likely directions for development of gold processing in general are discussed, and metallurgical process options for treatment of ores of platinum group metals (PGM) are outlined.Metallurgical process development for gold and platinum group metals proceeds through a number of well defined stages, with input from various disciplines and information sources. The orientation phase will include preparation of a general project overview; careful consideration of the issue of sampling and sample preparation; characterisation of the resource in terms of ore types, mineralogy, chemical composition; development of appropriate methodology; and development of an understanding of the potential metallurgical unit operations.The process definition phase will be-'directed to development and definition of a notional process flowsheet, and will include identification and appraisal of process options; development of, notional process flowsheets; testing of flowsheets against ore types; ranking of flowsheets; initial engineering, including preliminary mass balances, equipment selection and plant layout; and broad-brush economic appraisal.

Increasingly, geotechnical data are being collected for various types of coal development projects. In many cases, a specific design concern is addressed. However, many data collection programs are not intended to immediately support mine design activities or to resolve a specific concern. The following discussion describes some current geotechnical approaches in mine planning, development of reserves, and peripheral activities. Types of Data Collection Programs Geotechnical data collection is increasingly becoming a part of standard coal exploration programs, performed along with stratigraphic evaluations and coal quality tests. The aims of such programs vary. The purpose of the exploration may be to fill out the portfolio on a block of reserves that is to be sold, leased, or held for potential future development. In such a case, a generic suite of geotechnical data are collected. The resulting engineering reports may touch on the more well known mining problems of the area, but detail may be lacking. The geotechnical data are mostly intended to enhance the saleability of the package. Mine design alternatives are generally not addressed.

In this paper the performance effects of various shaped charge liner designs will be discussed. Several different charges will be tested and the liner design will be reviewed based on the performance in testing. The first type of shaped charge to be tested is a conical charge with dual confinement. For the purpose of this paper, dual confinement is a shaped charge with two liners but containing one explosive charge. Several charges with different dual confinement designs will be tested. Variations in configuration include charges with similar angle and similar diameter. The second type is a double conical shaped charge configuration. A double shaped charge will be considered to be two complete charges formed into a single cone. The goal of the project is to determine if any of the designs increase the efficiency and/or effectiveness of the shaped charge in comparison to the standard conical shaped charge. A standard conical charge will be detonated against a witness plate to get a standard depth of penetration or a baseline. All charges will have a seven cone diameter standoff, allowing the data to be compared to the control charge. Computer modeling will be used to predict the results of the testing that will be conducted. The actual results will be compared to the computer simulation for validation.

"Hydrochloric acid (HCl), although more expensive than sulfuric, find uses as a leaching agent in reactions involving iron oxide. The reason for this substitution was the discovery that oxyhydrolysis of ferrous chloride by which HCl can be recycled economically. This avoided the pollution of the environment by ferrous sulfate. It was found further that the rate of leaching of sulfides is faster when HCl is used as compared with sulfuric apparently due to the formation of aqueous chlorine. In case of refractory gold ores, HCl leaching under pressure avoids the use of cyanide solution since gold chloride is produced which can be recovered by standard methods. Hydrochloric acid find also uses in the leaching of scheelite and apatite but its use in leaching clay and anorthosite is questionable.INTRODUCTION Sulfuric acid is the cheapest acid and is used as a leaching agent in many hydrometallurgical processes. However, hydrochloric acid (HCl), although more expensive since it is prepared by reaction of sulfuric with sodium chloride, has replaced sulfuric acid in many reactions involving iron oxide. It replaced sulfuric acid for the first time in 1960s in pickling of steel because of pollution problems (Habashi, 2000). Ferrous chloride produced in pickling can be economically decomposed to ferric oxide and HCl according to:2FeCl2 + 2H2O + 1/2O2 ? Fe2O3 + 4HCl (1)which also shows that the acid can be regenerated but ferrous sulfate cannot be economically decomposed to recover sulfuric acid for recycle. Since then, HCl has been used in many leaching processes. Hydrochloric acid is a corrosive acid and is usually handled in rubber-lined equipment. REGENERATION OF HYDROCHLORIC ACID Regeneration of HCl is conducted in fluidized bed or in spray roaster Fluidized bed oxyhydrolysis In a fluidized bed, ferrous chloride solution is introduced onto a bed of hot ferric oxide where heating is provided by the hot fluidizing combustion gases (Figure 1). The solution is fed on top of the bed of oxides. The liquid feed wets the outer layer of the hot oxide particles and is quickly evaporated to form a layer of new solid oxide on top of the existing oxide, thereby producing dense homogeneous particles."

The precipitation of carbides from an alloy containing 33 pct Ni, 21 pct Cr, balance iron, was investigated electron microscopically by means of extraction replicas and thinned metal foils. Annealing temperatures ranged from 565°to 870°C and up to several thousand hours. M23C6 precipitated in pain boundaries, incoherent and coherent twin boundaries in that sequence. The orientation relationship between carbides and austenite matrix was determined and correlated with the morphology of the carbides and with the type of boundary in which precipitation occurred. In large-angle grain boundaries, as well as in coherent twin boundaries, the carbides had the same orientation as one of the adjacent pains. These carbides formed sheets of individual flakes with shapes related to the orientation of the boundary. In incoherent twin boundaries carbides precipitated in ribbons composed of pavallel rods. An unidentified subcarbide was found to precede precipitation of M23C6 in these boundaries. The M 23 C6 rods had a kind of fiber texture with (110) parallel to the long dimension of the rods and ribbon, and with orientations of both of the adjacent twin-related austenite crystals Predominant in the texture of the carbide. A hard sphere crystal model has been used to discuss orientation and morphology of the carbides in terms of free volume and vacancies available in the boundaries. A number of papers have dealt with the morphology of chromium carbide (M23 C6) precipitated in austenitic stainless steels.1"7 In all these investigations, the carbides were examined in the electron microscope by means of extraction replicas. With this technique, the carbides retain the spatial distribution they had in the bulk sample. However, since the matrix is dissolved in the process, the particles can turn in an unpredictable way; and the orientation relationship between matrix and carbides cannot be established. In this paper the results of studies on extraction replicas and on thinned metal foils are reported. These studies were undertaken to determine the matrix-to-car bide orientation relationship, and to correlate the orientation of the carbides with their morphology. PROCEDURE The material used was an austenitic alloy with 33 pct Ni, 21 pct Cr, balance iron, containing approximately 0.05 pct C. Coupons of 1.25-mm sheet were first solution-annealed at 1050°C for 15 min and air-cooled. Then, to precipitate the carbides, samples were isothermally annealed in the range from 565" to 870°C for times up to several thousand hours. All further specimen-preparation procedures were carried out after the final anneal. Carbon extraction replicas from polished and etched surfaces were made with 10 pct bromine in methyl alcohol.' Thin foils were prepared from punched-out 3-mm-diam disksg which fit into the electron-microscope holder. The disks were prethinned by grinding to approximately 0.5 mm thickness, and then electro-polished in a polytetrafluoroethylene holder1' with a solution containing 5 pct perchloric acid in acetic acid to which 10 g per 1 Cro3 and 5 g per 1 nickel chloride were added (etchant modified from that of Briers et al."). This solution dissolves neither the carbides nor the austenite around the carbides preferentially. By using extraction replicas, electron micrographs and selected-area electron-diffraction patterns were taken from the same carbide arrays. By using thin foils, electron micrographs were made from a grain boundary area containing carbides. Electron-diffraction patterns were then taken from the same area and from each of the adjacent grains separately. In this manner, the orientation of each grain could be determined without interference by the carbide pattern. A peculiarity of extraction replicas should be pointed out. After the matrix is etched away, the carbide arrays float freely in the etching and washing solutions, and are held in place only at the anchoring points in the carbon replica. When the replica is picked up with a screen the carbide arrays tend to flip to one side. Thus, while the surface features are preserved, the original arrangement of the carbides may severely and unpredictably be disturbed whenever the specimen contains large amounts of interconnected carbides. Nevertheless, it is possible to correlate the different morphologies of the carbides with the type of boundary in which they have precipitated. RESULTS 1) Extraction Replicas. Fig. 1 shows that the grain boundaries usually are curved, multicornered surfaces of random orientation. The coherent twin boundaries (which are (111) planes) cut a grain into parallel slices. Incoherent twin boundaries occur at the ends and on the steps of twins and are often narrow, parallel-sided strips which are much longer than they are wide. Different morphologies can clearly be distinguished for the M23Ce carbides precipitated in each of these types of boundaries, and agree well with those observed by kinzel.2 The kinetics of this precipitation has been investigated." The first carbides precipitate in junctions of three grain boundaries and fan out from there into the adjoining boundary surfaces, Fig. 2(a). "Drums containing 0.07 m3 of pyritic waste rock from a zinc/copper mine, with and without Natural Phosphate Rock (NPR) additions (40 kg/t waste rock) were set up outdoors. The effluent chemistry has been monitored over a period of 709 days. In the presence of NPR, the cumulative acidity discharged from 7 out of 8 drums was 80 % less than that discharged from drums without NPR. Mixing NPR throughout the drums was more effective in reducing acidity than placement of the NPR in a layer in the drum. NPR treatment was more effective for 'fresh' waste rock than for material which had weathered for more than 4 years. It is concluded that application of NPR to pyritic waste rock could greatly reduce acidity generated.IntroductionWaste rock dumps are significant sources of acid, generated by the oxidation of sulphides. Oxygen and water supply are oxidation rate-controlling factors, and oxygen supply is the reaction-limiting component. If secondary minerals can be formed on the surface of the rocks, pyrite oxidation and therefore acid generation may be reduced or inhibited. Neutralizing agents such as limestone do not prevent the oxidation of pyrite but treat the resultant acid mine drainage (AMD) or acid rock drainage (ARD).Meek et al. (1991) determined in pilot scale experiments that apatite mixed with tailings was more cost effective than liming or use of PVC liners to reduce oxygen and water penetration into the tailings. Phosphate is not acting as a neutralising agent but it creates a chemical condition on pyritic surfaces which prevents reactions of the oxidising agents. Precipitation of principally iron phosphates physically isolates the pyrite surfaces from further oxidation (Ziemkiewicz 1990; Evangelou 1994). The chemistry of the phosphate effects has been described by Spotts and Dollhopf (1990). Secondary mineral formation was evident in the leach pile at Gibraltar when leaching was impaired (Scott, 1991) indicating a link between oxidation and the mineral-formation process. This paper reports on effluent characteristics when waste rock is generating acid in the presence of NPR."

The Bureau of Mines has written a computer program for the design and cost of a shell and tube type heat exchanger, in which a change in phase occurs on the shell side. The total cost, which was minimized, includes the annual fixed charges and annual operating costs. The program was written to meet the following requirements: (1) Triangular pitch, (2) single or multiple pass, and (3) heating or cooling. Price optimum design was obtained for four standard tube diameters and pitch. Standard heat exchangers whose area equaled or exceeded the required area are also listed. The program was made adaptable to various fluids and to various tube dimensions by including many of the required data such as physical properties of the fluids, tube data, and standard shell data as input data.

Bench-scale flotation experiments have been conducted to study the effect of nonionic polyethylene oxide (PEO) polymer surfactants on the flotation of Florida phosphate rock. It has been found that PEOs having a molecular weight from 1,200 to 8,000 are effective. Flotation results demonstrate that the addition of nonionic PEO has a favorable effect on phosphate flotation, especially on the flotation of coarse phosphate feed. At about the same collector level, phosphate recovery can be improved by 10-30% with PEO addition. The surface chemistry of phosphate flotation using the fatty acid/fuel oil/PEO system has also been studied to better understand the phenomena involved. The increase in phosphate recovery with PEO addition has been attributed to improved dispersion of fatty acid, which leads to better froth stability and a more hydrophobic surface state.

Under normal circumstances, methane released along a longwall face represents only 10%-20% of the total me- thane emitted from the entire longwall panel. However, there might be a sudden surge of methane at the face which may cause a potential problem because the friction from shearer cutting, support movement, and scraper conveyor dragging can be ready ignition sources. Therefore, to predict the distribution of methane will be critical to prevent possible explosions. In this paper, methane dispersion patterns along a lognwall face are simulated under normal and abnormal conditions. With the simulation of methane released from the face, around shearer drum, and from the broken coal on the conveyor, places with possible high methane content can be identified by different phases of working process and shearer positions. Local ventilation measures are evaluated so precautionary measures can be planned ahead.

As mining projects get larger and more complex there is a need to examine the use of project management techniques developed for large construction projects in order to ensure completion of the project on time and budget. In recent years the construction/civil industry has sought new methods to ensure that multimillion dollar projects involving multiple contractors, working in an increasingly legislated work environment, are delivered to the clients satisfaction. The paper describes these methods, which range from program management to systems and tools to gather all project information such as schedule and cost, and relates how these can be applied to large international mining projects. The paper also describes the benefits that an independent project manager can bring to a client or owner?s team by setting up the relevant organization and controls together with the appropriate contract and procurement strategy.

The following is a brief summary of the Bulli Colliery and its method of operation when Australian Iron and Steel Ltd. took control.Bulli Colliery is situated about a mile west of the village of Bulli and is some 10 mUes north of the Australian Iron and Steel Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.The mine is owned by Australian Iron and Steel Limited, who purchased it in 1936 from the liquidators of Bulli Colliery and Coke Works.It is one of the oldest working coal mines in Australia, having been opened about 1858 and has worked more or less continuously since that date.The seam worked is the No. 1, or Bulli, Seam, which outcrops along the escarpment of the Illawarra Range and is generally operated by tunnels, the portal at Bulli being some 440ft. above sea level.The colliery holding is fairly extensive, but the coal seam over a large portion of the area within two miles of the outcrop has been more or less destroyed by an intrusion of basalt.At present there is no coal being worked within a distance of about 21 miles from the surface, the farthest workings being about four miles from the tunnel mouth.The existing main haulage road, for the first two miles from the portal, is not straight; it is very narrow over fairly long stretches and has many changes of grade varying from 3% in favour of the load to 13% against the load.The dumping station and screens are situated close to the portal of the haulage tunnel, and at this point the coal is loaded into railway hopper waggons, which are then hauled by rope to the top of a self-acting incline. The waggons are lowered down the incline, a distance of approximately! mile, the ruling grade being about 18 %.From the bottom of the incline, waggons are hauled by Company's steam locomotive to exchange sidings from whence they are taken by New South Wales Government Railway engine to the Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.

"To determine the heating rate of billets using ‘short coils’, an appropriate correction factor must be applied to the theoretical relationship. In 1945, Vaughan and Williamson published a semi-empirically modified Nagaoka coefficient applicable for moderate frequency induction heating processes (10 kHz). Recently it was demonstrated that the method of Vaughan and Williamson gives <10% error in the estimated power when heating aluminum billets at 50 Hz.In the present study, experiments have been conducted on aluminum billets in order to verify an empirical frequency corrected ‘short coil’ equation. Measurements of electrical conductivity (<± 0.5%), current (± 1%), heat (± 1-3%), and magnetic flux density (± 1-2%) have been performed. The results are compared with 1D analytical calculations, and 2D axial symmetric FEM modeling using COMSOL 4.2®. The frequency corrected equation has proven to provide accurate predictions of power (<4% error) within the frequency range 50 Hz to 500 kHz.IntroductionInduction heating is commonly applied to the re-heating of billets before forging or extrusion processes. The resistive heating produced by eddy currents in the solid or semi-solid work piece during this procedure, is driven by the time varying magnetic flux density in the air-gap between the work piece and the coil. The flux in the air-gap is created by the current flowing in the induction coil, i.e. the magneto-motive force. In Figure 1 it can be seen that the currents present in the work piece are concentrated in the outer ‘shell’, or the first electromagnetic penetration depth (dw), and flow in a direction which opposes the magnetic field produced by the induction coil."

One of the most vigorous of the continuous improvement methodologies is Six Sigma. While usually associated with improving manufacturing and product quality, leading manufacturers are using it to improve their extended supply chain and logistics capabilities. At the same time they are improving reliability, some companies have cut hundreds of millions of dollars of fat out of their supply chain. Mine to Mill optimization is a transformation of culture from processing tons to processing a quality feed size distribution which reduces the overall operational costs and add the highest value to the mine. This is not a constant endeavor. As such, a dynamic performance monitoring and diagnosis is necessary. We will review a systemic way to performance improvements and avoiding metal losses from the blast to the metals. We show the requirements of using raw data to analysis the data to define operational maps which provide assistance to run the mine and mill. A case study is provided with the mine and mill data was integrated combining process control and quality information resulting in reduction of water and energy consumption while improving the overall value of the mine. The results of reengineering the current system with this SIX SIGMA Strategy had the following results: an increase of ore milling: 4.6% decrease of mil power: 3.9%, decrease of fresh water consumption: 6.8%, with a total of net profits: US$ 31.8 million, the PI System infrastructure contribution: US$ 7.95 million. These estimates were for the period 2009/04/04 to 2009/12/31.

THE-report of the advisory committee to the U. S. Bureau of Mines, on the use of oxygen in metallurgy, brings to the art of steelmaking a radical change in the method of operation of the many processes of this widely diversified industry. When completed, the improvements suggested by the use of oxygen will be far-reaching and revolutionary. As to its effect upon the iron blast furnace, the use of oxygen should be as important as any of the improvements in the art of iron smelting and should take its place beside the German "Hochofen" which was the first attempt to use a shaft for preheating the stock, and beside the hot-blast stove which heated the blast before entering the furnace. The former initially produced molten iron and the latter made unbelievable economies in fuel consumption. It would seem that a discussion of this paper would be best served by following the conclusions on page 17 of the report and analyzing them seriatim. 1. (a) A decrease in costs, due to higher smelting heats is only attainable by taking full advantage of these heat units. This is affected by, adding additional ore to the burden which in turn increases production and yields a larger tonnage upon which to figure costs. These economies appear in decreased cost per ton of iron for coke and limestone consumed, and a proportionate reduction in all items entering the cost above materials. We can take no exception to these. premises. It is a well-known fact that silicon in the iron and sulfur removed" are the result of hearth temperature, other matters remaining constant. To a practical furnaceman the most satisfactory manner of controlling a furnace is by increasing the burden. It is not necessary, therefore, to consider the question of refractories, for this discussion presupposes that the temperatures in the furnaces will be kept practically where they now stand for making the various grades of iron. The same situation obtains in regard to the height of the furnace, which, as intimated, was one of the great strides forward in this art, and its abandonment at this time, is inconceivable. The shaft prepares the stock so that at each succeeding step we have exactly the proper conditions. All the stock entering the furnace is dried and preheated. The limestone is calcined by sensible heat practically at no cost, for this is sensible heat which otherwise would pass from the top with the gases. Under normal conditions, external calcination has been attempted without tangible results. The vast coal resources of North Slope, Alaska can be expected to attract substantial interest because the nearly flat lying coal beds of the coastal plan are specially amenable to surface mining. Mining on a scale large enough to justify coal development in this area could have severe environmental effects. The mitigation would be uncertain because large scale coal mining and reclamation operations have not been carried out in the arctic The deficiency of the scientific data base is another factor that requires consideration if coal mining has to develop in accordance with the objectives of PL 95-87. The objective of this paper is to establish the interrelationship between the problems due to permafrost and factors in reclamation of post mining land in order to find ways to transform nature in a rational and purposeful manner and to suggest specific reclamation approaches that may be appropriate in this region.
