The effect of low pressures on the flow and fracture behavior of molybdenum is described. For poly crystalline samples, room-temperature tensile tests indicate greater ductility under 10 Torr than under intermediate pressures up to and including atmospheric pressure (760 Torr). In addition, tests conducted at 760 Torr under atmospheres of air, dry nitrogen, and purified argon exhibited no apparent difference in mechanical properties. Critical tests involving baking in situ as well as those involving single-crystal deformation further imply that the ductility effect is a pressure-dependent phenomenon related only to the fracture process. This dependency is discussed in terms of adsorption and diffusion contributions. THE effect of very low pressures on material properties has heretofore been presumed to be important only for substances possessing relatively high vapor pressures at ambient temperatures. Research has therefore been concentrated primarily on organic solids and liquids, and in some instances on metals such as zinc and cadmium. Most vacuum-effect studies' on the mechanical behavior of metals have been performed under conditions of either cyclic loading or creep rupture at elevated temperatures, i.e., over extended time periods. These studies were not restricted to high vapor pressure materials but also encompassed such metals as gold, copper, and nickel. Very little concern, however, was placed upon the importance of a vacuum environment on the mechanical behavior of metals subjected to a simple unidirectional deformation at ambient temperatures. A tension test is generally of short duration as compared to a creep test, and at room temperature vacuum effects if any would be expected to be surface-limited. In early 1963, Kramer and podlaseck2 reported a change in the bulk flow behavior of aluminum single crystals during room-temperature tension tests. The deformations were performed under pressure conditions of 760 to 3.4 X 10-8 Torr and indicated for the first time a vacuum surface effect contributing to the bulk tensile behavior of metal specimens. As a consequence, an experimental program was initiated in this Laboratory to study the effects of ultrahigh-vacuum conditions on the mechanical behavior of metals. The results of a preliminary study on poly-crystalline molybdenum3 revealed, unlike Kramer's observations of changes in the stress-strain behavior, only an increased ductility under ultrahigh vacuum. Flow behaviors were nearly identical for all tests re- gardless of pressure. This paper presents comprehensive results obtained in this area of research. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three material categories were used in this study: sintered and are-cast polycrystalline molybdenum of nominal purity 99.93+ pct and single-pass electron-beam zone-refined molybdenum single crystals having a nominal purity level of 99.99+ pct. The interstitial levels (weight percent) as determined by the Materials Testing Laboratories, Division of Magnaflux Corp., were as follows: sintered molybdenum (C— 0.005, H—0.0004, O—0.015, N—0.008); and arc-cast molybdenum (C-0.0038, H-0.0003, O-0.015, N-0.023). Single-crystal molybdenum obtained from Materials Research Corp. had a typical interstitial analysis of C-0.0015, H-0.00007, O—0.00045, and N-0.0001. Tensile specimens having a 5 mm diam by 50.8 mm length were prepared from these materials. An average grain diameter of 0.059 mm was obtained for the sintered specimens following a 4-hr, 1600°C heat treatment. Grain sizes from 0.019 to 0.149 mm were obtained in the arc-cast specimens following heat treatments from 1100° to 1600°C for 1 hr. This series of specimens was used exclusively for the grain-size effect studies. All samples were electrolytically polished in 97 pct sulfuric acid solution prior to testing. Experiments were performed at room temperature in an ion-pumped ultrahigh-vacuum system positioned in an Instron tensile machine, Fig. 1. A constant strain rate of 4.2 x 10-4 sec-1 as derived from crosshead displacement was assumed for the deformations. Starting vacuums ranged from 2 to 0.5 X 10-10 Torr. In response to a request from the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the Bureau of Mines has recently completed a respirable dust survey of 18 U.S. coal preparation plants. Of these, three were essentially free of dust problems. Respirable dust exposure of workers in the remaining plants depended on the time spent in the dusty areas. In five of the plants surveyed, Bureau tests showed that in some areas worker exposures could exceed Federal dust limits in less than 2 hours.

"Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) studies of tetravalent platinum from acidic chloride solutions have been carried out with Alamine 336 as an extractant diluted in kerosene. The title metal shows the inverse behavior at higher acid concentrations. Plot of log D vs. log [Acid], mol.L-1 gave a straight line with a negative slope of 0.8±0.03 indicating the exchange of one mole of hydrogen ions for every mole of platinum(IV) extracted into the organic phase. Extraction of platinum(IV) increases with increase of extractant concentration. The plot of log D vs. log [Extractant], mol.L-1 is linear with slope 1±0.3, indicating the association of one mole of extractant with the extracted metal species. The plot between metal distributions to aqueous to organic phases is 1.3±0.01; it indicates monomeric species was formed in organic phase. Stripping of metal from the loaded organic (LO) with mineral acids such as hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric acids and bases like ammonia, hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide are studied. The results indicated that hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide are the better stripping agents when compared with other acids and bases. Increase of temperature decreases the percentage extraction of metal indicating the process is endothermic. Regeneration and recycling capacity of Alamine 336 and extraction behavior of associated elements such as aluminium(III), magnesium(II), cobalt(II), iron(III) and nickel(II) were studied.IntroductionThe demand for platinum group metals (PGM’s) has risen in the last five years expected to keep in rising. Right now, the demand is already beyond the supply. The primary use of PGM’s today is in the automotive industry. Catalytic converters used in the PGM’s process to reduce greenhouse gases. Because of the current demand to reduce the green house effect the expected need for platinum is here stay. Country’s now advancing in the use of car production also are phasing increasing the needs for this metal. Chemical processing also use it, too. These industries account for more than 50% of all platinum production. Jewelry is other primary use of this precious metal whose value is much greater than gold. Other uses include computer data storage, scientific developments, fuel cell technology and in the glass manufacturing processes."

O objetivo desse trabalho é a apresentação do novo modelo de S&OP da ArcelorMittal Brasil – Aços Planos, seus benefícios, e ferramentas utilizadas para suportar essa evolução: o SAP Integrated Business Planning for S&OP e a plataforma de colaboração SAP Jam, responsável por orquestrar todo fluxo de S&OP e as interações entre as diversas áreas envolvidas. O novo processo foi baseado nos conceitos existentes na literatura e também é objeto desse artigo. Além disso, no projeto de implementação do SAP IBP e SAP Jam foram utilizadas a Metodologia de Gerenciamento de Projetos baseada nas melhores práticas descritas pelo PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) do PMI (Project Management Institute) e a Metodologia SAP Activate para a implementação dos produtos. Como resultado da implantação desse projeto, foram obtidos vários benefícios, sendo alguns deles já atingidos e outros a serem capturados após o período de adaptação e estabilização dos processos e ferramentas.

Coal mining has an impact on the water management of the water scarce Upper Olifants River Catchment. A prefeasibility study was carried out by Anglo Coal and Ingwe Collieries Limited to establish the water supply and demand in the catchment. A geohydrological model was used for the coalfields to determine the stored water and excess water available. Two distinct collective and treatment systems were proposed for the Witbank and Middelburg municipalities to treat excess water from the Anglo Coal and Ingwe Collieries Limited. The Emalahleni Water Reclamation Project for Witbank was initiated first. Water management and treatment experience gained at Anglo Coal was the cornerstone to develop the collection, treatment and distribution system. A full enquiry was issued to Keyplan, Veolia, Bateman Africa and IST Technik to construct, commission, operate and maintain a 20 ML/day desalination plant to treat acidic, saline mine waters to a South African National Standard (SANS) 0241 Class 0 potable water. After the technical and financial adjudication, Keyplan were awarded the contract. An integrated regulatory process was adopted through consultation with all the relevant regional and head office staff of the Department of Minerals and Energy, Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and the Mpumalanga Department of Land Affairs via an authorityÆs steering committee. A rock engineering evaluation was done to select both the plant and waste disposal sites as all possible sites are undermined. Various contracts are required with the individual mines for water supply, the Emalahleni Local Municipality for the delivery of potable water and for the disposal of wastes.

THE Institute of Metals Division Lecture in 1936, given by R. F. Mehl, on diffusion in solid metals1, was introduced with the statement that "the phenomena of diffusion are intimately related to many basic prob-lems of the metallic state, but in addition to this the process of diffusion is of first importance practically." In view of the scope of that lecture, it does not seem necessary to review the importance, history or present status of diffusion problems. One aspect of the subject of diffusion that has received little attention became of some immediate importance in the course of a study on segrega-tion. When a solid solution alloy freezes, the familiar mechanism of solidification requires that the first nuclei formed be low in solute con-centration, with a resultant normal segregation or coring effect during freezing. Theoretically, diffusion of solute atoms during solidification should result in a homogeneous solid solution. Actually, of course, it is impossible in most binary alloys to obtain a cooling rate that will permit diffusion to eliminate coring in the freezing dendrites. For a given alloy, the extent of diffusion attained up to the point of final solidification will determine the degree of enrichment in solute atoms of the final liquid phase. The flow of this liquid into dendritic contraction channels and the solute concentration of the liquid seem to be the determining factors as to whether the final gross segregation is normal, inverse or absent. The purpose of the present study of diffusion was to determine to some extent the separate diffusion rates of copper and magnesium into pure aluminum with a view to clarifying previous results on segregation in these alloys; i.e., the fact that under similar freezing conditions alumimum-copper alloys segregate inversely and aluminum-magnesium alloys segre-gate normally. Of concomitant interest were the questions of the homogenization times required for segregated ingots or partially melted, i.e., "burnt," structures, and the solution heat-treatment times required for cast, hardenable aluminum-copper and aluminum-magnesium alloys, for worked and annealed structures, and so forth.

The ionization potentials of gaseous Group 11elements are similar, with Au(0) being 1.5 eV greater than the next highest member of the group, Cu(0). The ionization potentials are all very much greater than the alkali metals, making these ?coinage? elements rather unreactive to chemical oxidation. Ionization from the first oxidation state shows a different pattern, with Ag(I) being the most difficult of the Group 11 ions to lose an electron. Gold(I) is noble and only normally oxidized in the presence of strongly coordinating ligands such as thiols or cyanide. Gold(I) compounds are 2-, 3- and 4- coordinate, with 3-coordinate species generally showing visible photoluminescence under UV excitation. Dinuclear Au(I) compounds with strongly coordinating S or C ligands can be oxidized to form isolable metal-metal bonded Au(II) compounds which are often readily isolable. Many have been structurally characterized. T he ease with which electrons are lost from closed shell dinuclear sp ecies (with anti-bonding M-M interactions) increases when metalmetal bonded compounds are formed. T his observation was made by our group with oxidative-addition studies of dinuclear gold(I) ylide complexes. It was superbly demonstrated recently by Cotton?s group who reported the isolation and characterization of a dinuclear closed shell transition metal species which is more readily oxidized than cesium. Trinuclear Au(I) pyrazolates, TR(pz), carb eniates, TR(carb), and benzylimidazolates, TR(bz), are well known and undergo electron loss through oxidative addition forming Au(I,III) mixed valence species and ultimately trinuclear Au(III) species. Au(II) species are absent from isolation in these oxidations. These carbeniates and benzylimidazolates also are excellent bases for metals ions such as Tl(I) and Ag(I). The acidic, neutral trinuclear compound [Hg(C6F4)3]3 also interacts with these bases. We have also shown that the neutral organic pi acids C6F6 and TCNQ form stacked pi-acid pi-base products with the trinuclear Au(I) compounds. In this paper, the structure of the octafluoronaphthalene acid-base product will be described. It displays a feature not observed previously in that the product is photoluminescent with a bright yellow emission. The 3.5 ms lifetime is very long and reminiscent of the long lifetimes observed by Balch for the stacked methyl,methoxy Au(carb). The electrochemical oxidation of tetragold(I) clusters, [Au4(form)4] have been studied in 0.1 M Bu4NPF6/CH2Cl2 at Pt working electrode at different scan rates. Three waves are obtained at 0.75, 0.95, and 1.09 V vs Ag/AgCl at scan rate 500 mV/s. The potential of the three reversible waves is independent of the scan rate in the range 50 mV/s to 3 V/s. The current at the third wave is larger than those at the first two waves. These tetranuclear species app ear to be effec tive catalyst precursors for the oxidation in air of CO. Introduction. The electronic structural relationships of the coinage elements and the alkali metals are similar in the sense that each have a [closed shell]ns1 configuration, yet their ionization energies (Table) and chemistries are clearly vastly different. The Group 11coinage elements have an underlying nd10 level immediately below the ns1 level. Unlike the alkali elements, ionization leaves the filled d electron shell the next accessible for further ionization. The coinage elements are all relatively ?noble?, much less reactive to environm ental conditions than the alkali metals. With the coinage elements, oxidation becomes very much dependent upon the types of ligand s availab le to bo nd to the ionized state.

Pictured on these pages are seven of the eight RMCMI Scholarship Award Winners for the 1993- 94 year followed by a brief profile. Seven of the eight winners were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Snowmass Village, Colorado to receive recognition at the Institute Awards Luncheon Monday, June 27, 1994. Due to another conflict. Jason T. Dale of Wyoming was unable to attend. Each state vice president sewed as the host for the collegiate winner. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman. Alan Czarnowsky, each winner receives $750 tuition credit for the coming academic year, as well as transportation, hotel lodging and meals at convention as guests of the Institute. Because this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will receive another $750 for tuition credit in their senior year if they have maintained good academic standing and are recommended by their university. A resident from each of the eight RMCMI member states is selected from among Board approved institutions. Criteria for these awards to be made in the spring annually is (1) That the award be made to a sophomore student and used as tuition during the junior year. (2) That the recipient be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the member state. (3) That the recipient have good academic standing, be pursing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than those in the mining departments, but in engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Contributions to this worthy project are tax deductible to each individual RMCMI member or his firm. She told the Scholarship Chairman that if she wasn't part of the solution, she was part of the problem. Christy has received numerous awards during school including being on the honor roll and university chapters of Society of Mining Engineers. Besides her academic activities, which includes being a member of Student Council, Christy is quite an athlete and enjoys basketball, softball, tennis, golf, and soccer. THIS paper reviews pertinent geology of the Biwabik iron formation, Mesabi Range, Minnesota. This iron formation is divisible into four members. Each member is distinctive and contains marker horizons, which are recognizable throughout all phases of alteration from lean, fresh rock to high-grade iron ore. Some beds have a larger magnetite content than others. During the process of ore genesis, which is essentially an oxidation process, the magnetite content is lowered. Alteration from iron formation to ore includes both oxidation of iron minerals and silica removal by leaching and these distinct processes progress at variable rates for different locations and structures. Magnetic intensities, of each horizon of the iron formation are dependent chiefly upon its preoxidation magnetite content, upon the subsequent degree of oxidation, upon the character of the enclosing rocks, and on the extent of fracturing, folding, or faulting. The results of a number of magnetic surveys are described and are correlated with results of drill-hole and mine exploration and development. The magnetic anomalies obtained are discussed in relation to phases of formation of ore within the iron formation.

Mine haul road design at Bougainville Copper Limited has undergone significant changes since mine start-up. Selection of 95 tonne trucks and the subsequent replacement by 155 tonne units is discussed, with particular reference to haul conditions within the mine. Changes to haul road design and construction practices are detailed which have lead to improved standards and tyre life. INTRODUCTION Bougainville Copper Limited operates one of the largest copper mines in the world at Panguna, Bougainville Island, in the North Solomons group of Papua New Guinea. The mine commenced commercial operation in April, 1972 and current planned production is 198 000 tonnes of material per day, of which 115 000 tonnes is ore averaging 0.46% copper. Annual total planned production is 72 000 000 tonnes to yield approximately 150 000 tonnes of copper with significant quantities of gold and silver. The mine operations workforce now consists of national employees up to General Foreman level.

The provision of a water supply is a major consideration in planning mining developments particularly in remote areas. The evaluation and development of adequate water supplies in and areas of Australia is often as important as the discovery of the orebody. The copper orebody at Warrego near Tennant Creek could not be mined economically if cheap treatment water was not available near the mine. This paper describes the difficulties in obtaining water in the Tennant Creek area and the water supply investigations carried out near the Warrego Mine which resulted in the successful discovery and evaluation of a reliable large scale water supply. It is contended that the establishment of a water supply must be approached on a systematic and scientific basis similar to the approach with the exploration and establishment of actual ore reserves. Mining companies with similar water supply problems may benefit by approaching their problem on this basis. The approach adopted by Peko Mines is outlined in this report.

A green ball of iron ore faces many perils from the time it is formed until it finally emerges from the pelletizing furnace as a hardened pellet. For instance, if the rate of heat transfer into a ball is sufficient to produce vapor from either the free or combined water more rapidly than it can escape at a tolerable pressure, the ball may split, spall, or even explode, a failure commonly known as decrepitation. To avoid such failures, one must either limit the rate of heat transfer during the drying and preheating stages, at the expense of production rates, or improve the decrepitation resistance of the green balls. The latter remedy may often be accomplished through changes in ore preparation, balling procedures, or the judicious use of binders or other additives. INTRODUCTION Pelletization has become established as an especially desirable method for the agglomeration of fine taconite concentrates and it promises to be equally satisfactory for improving the physical structures of certain natural ores. A high-quality pelletized iron ore consists of uniformly sized spheres, usually about 1/2-in. diam, which are strong enough to resist abrasion and breakage during handling and which reduce well without disintegration in the blast furnace. The unfired agglomerates, "green balls", are subject to several destructive effects that must be avoided or minimized if a high-quality product is to be obtained by pelletization. Among these are abrasion and impact deformation or breakage during handling of the wet green balls, deformation and breakage by compressive forces in the bed of ore in the pel-letizing furnace, decrepitation during drying and preheating, wind erosion, and radial cracking at firing temperatures. Moisture condensation from the warm saturated gases downstream from the drying zone on wet, cool balls may cause bed collapse if it becomes excessive. Decrepitation is defined as the sudden disintegration of green balls, usually with an audible pop, that occurs when they are heated too rapidly during the drying or preheating stages of the pelletization process. The extent of ball disintegration may vary from merely splitting off a small fragment to almost total disintegration into the original ore particles making up the ball. Such ball destruction results in a decreased yield of pellets, and the fragments, which also tend to interfere by obstructing the gas flow through the bed, must eventually be screened from the fired product and recycled. The closely related type of ball failure that sometimes occurs during the high temperature firing stage, resulting in radial cracks without fragmentation, was not considered to be decrepitation for the purpose of this investigation. Failure by decrepitation is not usually a serious problem in the pelletization of taconite concentrates. The problem is significant, however, in the pelletization of some natural ores, especially those containing hydrous iron oxides. In some instances, economicd production rates cannot be maintained if the drying and preheating rates are slowed down enough to avoid decrepitation. OBJECTIVES This investigation was undertaken to: (1) Develop a practical laboratory means for quantitatively measuring the tendency for green balls to decrepitate in iron ore pelletizing furnaces, and (2) Investigate the causes and cures of ball decrepitation. MATERIALS Two iron ores were used in the work reported here: a taconite concentrate at 90% minus 325 mesh, containing 65.0% Fe, 8.4% SiO2, and no loss-on-ignition; and a crude oxidized ore at 54% minus 325 mesh, containing 59.1% Fe, 3.6% SiO2, 1.1% A12O3, and 9.5% loss-on-ignition. Hartford Steel Technologies (HST) has a pyrometallurgical and hydrometaliurgical process capable of reclaiming valuable metals from a hazardous waste· stream such as EAF Dust. The HST Process effectively addresses the growing environmental concerns surrounding the increasing production of EAF Dust without producing any hazardous waste material as byproducts. Currently EAF Dust production levels are exceeding the 1,000,000 metric tons per year mark. The HST Process is designed to separate iron, zinc, lead, cadmium, copper, and silver metals using a two-phased process. The Pyrometallurgical side of the Process utilizes a Rotary Hearth Furnace to separate the iron metal from the remaining metals. These remaining metals are further separated, using a Hydrometallurgical Process, in a series of digestion tanks. The individual metals are then collected in saleable form.

For many gearing applications, calculations carried out to AGMA standards are comprehensive. For very large gears, the elastic nature of the gear and pinion structures begins to play a larger role in determining the load distribution along the teeth. Various factors affecting the stiffness of the gear and pinion sets have been studied through FEA models for actual configurations. In particular, the effect of gear shape, load location, unsymmetrical structures, etc. have been studied in the unaligned and field aligned conditions. Analysis results show that the load distribution factor is highly sensitive to pin-ion stiffness, which affects gear structure design.

Cyanide is a key contributor to the efficiency of gold extraction. Public perceptions of cyanide are emotive and following some publicised incidents involving cyanide, the gold mining industry established a voluntary cyanide code for the manufacture, transport and use of cyanide in the production of gold. The paper describes the development of the code, its content and the third party auditing of the code as a means of establishing and maintaining benchmark standards. In adhering to the cyanide code requirements, there are overlaps with other management systems such as ISO 14001 and OHASA 18001 and the paper seeks to show how existing mine systems can readily accommodate cyanide code compliance and that operating and auditing the cyanide code can assist in the integration of mine heath, safety and environmental management systems.

Gold has always been a crisis investment. For centuries gold has been considered globally the money of last resort. In time of war, inflation, financial uncertainty, political upheaval there has with few exceptions always been a flight to gold. The gold paradox simply is that even though we have gone through for the past handful of years all the kinds of. anxieties that would cause the gold price to rise, it has instead dropped drastically. Figure 1. illustrates the important factors that influenced the gold price significantly up or down before 1987. Obviously, since then, even though we have had wars, inflation, financial problems involving breaking banks and thrifts let alone collapsing financial institutions, the gold price has both in the long-term and the short-term trended downwards. Figure 2. depicts the gold price path since 1987. If the presence of time-honored and time-tested factors that should have driven the gold price up didn't do the job, then logic dictates that new factors to drive the gold price down and keep it depressed arose. And they did. But before addressing these depressants permit me to turn to the arcane art of gold price prediction and fore-casting.

This report describes the results of investigations into four specific areas related to trolley wire power distribution systems in coal mines. These are: 1. Partially insulated (shielded) trolley wire 2. High-speed insulator fault detectors 3. Dual-wire trolley systems 4. Insulator failure indicators. Prototype devices or designs were developed in each area. In addition, a brief survey was made in an attempt to assess the Future of mine trolley systems, and data was collected and reviewed in an attempt to analyze the nature of trolley wire related accidents. Other options for decreasing the risks associated with trolley systems that arose .during the study are briefly described in appendices. These include insulating equipment and miners from return and/or energized conductors and use of a segmented trolley wire with local control of current delivering capability.

Jetstream pressure distributions and coal cutting rates were determined for a number of nozzles and under different operating conditions. The jetstrearn pressure distribution data were fitted to an assumed curvilinear equation by the utilization of a numerical least-squares technique with the aid of a digital computer. Subsequent manipulation of the approximation equation showed that the total force of the jetstream, rather than its maximum pressure or total kinetic energy per unit Lime, was the most significant quantity affecting the coal cutting rate. A shorter method for assessing the ability of a nozzle to cut coal was found.
