"In-situ network composites are composites in which the filler network is formed during composite fabrication, in contrast to ex-situ networks which are formed prior to composite fabrication. A homogeneous in-situ network composite has the entire network at the same composition; a heterogeneous in-situ network composite has different parts of the network at different compositions. The homogeneous network composite is made either by the Method of Molten Filler Flow or the Method of Dissolution and Deposition; a heterogeneous network composite is made by the Method of Liquid-Phase Networking. Examples include polymermatrix and metal-matrix composites.IntroductionNetwork composites refer to composites containing a continuous three-dimensional network as the filler. These composites are attractive in their lack of delamination failure, which is usually characterised by two-dimensional composites. The filler and matrix in a network composite can be considered two interpenetrating networks. The mechanical interlocking of the networks adds to the cohesion of the composite. In cases where the filer is much better than the matrix in a certain property, the network nature of the filler makes the filler highly effective in improving that property in the composite in all directions. The property desired in the composite may be high strength, high modulus, low coefficient of thermal expansion, high thermal conductivity, or low electrical resistivity."

Greater awareness of the increasing need to develop supplementary energy sources is accelerating us towards many basic decisions regarding future utilization of mined energy materials -- uranium, coal, oil sands and oil shale. The latter material comprises a major potential source of oil which will require creation of unusually large and low-cost underground mining systems. In this paper, the author briefly outlines and analyzes several of the factors which continue to provide the somewhat unique character of oil shale nine planning and mine operation.

THE diffusion of magnesium and silicon from the core into the high-purity coating of Alclad sheet is important commercially, and led to the use of a duplex product for the study of diffusion by means of spectro-graphic analysis of successive layers. It has been found that in the duplex materials the diffusion of magne-sium from an undersaturated aluminum-magnesium alloy into its high-purity aluminum coating is approximately of the same order of magnitude as the diffusion of silicon from a saturated aluminum-silicon alloy into its high-purity aluminum coating. However, if magnesium and silicon are both present in the alloy in the ratio of Mg2Si they appear to diffuse in the approximate ratio of this compound. Finally, if the alloy contains silicon in excess of the amount required by magnesium silicide, the amount of diffused silicon in the high-purity aluminum coating will also be in excess. The interdiffusion of metals in the solid state is of both scientific and technical interest, because it is helpful in the study of the alloy structure and in the solution of problems pertaining to the strength and surface condition of the fabricated product. W. C. Roberts-Austen1 carried out the first quantitative determination of the coefficient of diffusion of gold into lead. This classical experiment was followed by a series of investigations on the diffusion of metals and nonmetals in iron and steel and in nonferrous metals and alloys. Recently the diffusion of copper in coated strong aluminum alloys was investigated by A. Burkhardt2. This appeared to be the first published investigation on the diffusion of metals into aluminum.

One key to maintaining successful mining operations in today?s global economy is in having the ability to access real-time machine operating data ([1] G. Brown, B. Ebacher, W. Koellner,2000)([2] Brochure of Siemens E&A, Order Number 141000-1). With recent and ongoing advances in mining equipment systems it is imperative that mine managers have full knowledge of the status of their equipment at any given point in time. This knowledge is critical to ensuring that the productivity of each and every machine is maximized. Knowledge of machine status is only the first step, however, in controlling and optimizing a piece of mining equipment. Computer based diagnostic systems, traditionally offered on mining equipment, have provided a link for collecting data and trouble-shooting problems as they occur. One problem existed, though, that those systems stopped short of providing full drive systems access. A maintenance technician could see the data but to make critical adjustments or make repairs the technician needed to be on the machine. In extreme cases the machine would be down until OEM assistance could reach the mine site. The key then to reducing down-time and maximizing machine productivity was creating a system that could not only monitor drive systems but also provide remote access to those systems. Essentially a link needed to be created through which a technician could gain drive access remotely then make adjustments or repairs without being on the piece of equipment. This paper will introduce AccessDirectTM, a new remote diagnostic system for Bucyrus mining shovels and draglines. AccessDirectTM combines all three important elements of remote diagnostics: ? Vital Signs and Production Monitoring (SiRAS-M) ? Automatic analysis (SiRAS-A) of faults, and tracking of trends for preventive and reliability centered maintenance , and ? Fast, direct Intervention (SiRAS ? I) for troubleshooting support, repairs, and system optimization.

13.1-SUBSIDENCE AND GROUND MOVEMENT ROBERT STEFANKO 13.1.1-SUBSIDENCE AND FAILURE This treatment of subsidence and ground movement will be confined to subsidence control for limiting surface damage by assessing the significant parameters affecting ground movements during mining to optimize mining techniques. The material will be equally applicable to evaporite mining as well as coal but will not deal with block caving or similar systems where failure is deliberately induced and surface protection is not necessary or provided. When an underground opening is established, the original equilibrium is disturbed with resultant stress concentrations. While many factors are involved in opening stability, the span (W) undoubtedly is one of the most important factors in failure. Assuming it is relatively small, the overlying rock strata can bridge across the opening and little if any movement or convergence of top and bottom will occur. However, as the span increases, a point is reached where the stress in the overlying rock strata exceeds some strength value of the rock, and the top breaks. If the opening span is limited to some subcritical value (-We) and/or is at great depth (D), a pseudo-arch will form, achielring stability before rupture occurs to the surface. The boundary of this arch is thought to approximate an ellipse in form with the major axis vertical and equal to four times W, although there has been little field research to substantiate this theory. However, if the width of this opening is increased at this horizon to some critical value (W,) or the same span is created in a shallower seam, the overlying strata ill progressively rupture to the surface and the characteristic subsidence trough is formed (Fig. 13-1) The area of the surface affected is much greater than the area of the seam extracted, depending on the "angle of draw" (a), which is the angle between a vertical line from the edge of the opening and another line extended to a point at which subsidence tails out to zero. This angle has been found to be about 35° in Europe but is rather academic, being a function of instrument precision in detecting subsidence. Since the subsidence effect is so small at any point beyond n 25° angle, this latter may be considered the practical limit of subsidence. Further- more, indications are that the angle of draw varies with depth and nature of the strata.' In a field study over a 1,000-ft-deep potash mine in New Mexico, the maximum angle of draw was found to be 51.5°.2 So far, only a single opening has been considered. However, the width of the excavation applies to any complex mining system of entries, rooms and longwalls as long as the seam has been fully extracted and the width represents the distance from one solid rib to another. It will be noted that the amount of vertical displacement varies from point to point on the surface (s), but the maximum subsidence for a given trough occurs at the center (S). This latter value may not he equal to the maximum possible subsidence (Sm) which occurs only if a critical or super- critical (+W,) width has been exceeded (Fig. 13-1). Substantial surface damage can result when subsidence occurs. Factors affecting the amount and type of ground movement are: thickness and properties of the seam, angle of draw, width of excavation, depth and type of overburden, inclinations of strata and surface, and the amount of support left in the gob. Geologic conditions in eight northern operating sections of Jane Mine, Keystone Coal Mining Complex. Armstrong County, Pennsylvania are defined by utilizing drillhole data and underground geologic mapping. Three of the eight sections are experiencing difficult mining conditions in the Shelocta "0" coal seam (formerly the Lower Freeport). The five remaining productive sections will exhaust their reserves within one year. Coordinating mine planning with future production levels is aided by indicating areas that appear favorable and lack the geologic conditions that cause difficult mining. Roof rock 1 ithologies, lithologic variations in and below the floor, jointing, overburden thickness, coal splits, paleochannels. and clay veins are the principal geologic factors believed to influence mining conditions in Jane Mine. Careful definition of each cause allows for a reasonable assessment of future mining conditions.

Portfolio theory and the Capital Asset Pricing Model (Modigliani and Pogue, 1974) provides an investment decision rationale which takes account of the benefits of diversification in reducing effective risk, but this theory does not consider the financial capability of the firm to survive large losses if they should occur. The LL-curve theory (Wells, 1976) takes the latter consideration into account, but it does not provide for the effects of diversification. This paper pro- poses a general theory to account for both diversification and the financial capacity of the firm to underwrite the investment risks.

The Underground Research Laboratory (URL) , a major geotechnical research facility, is currently being developed by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) , 120 km northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The URL is part of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program, which is assessing the concept of nuclear fuel waste disposal in a vault deep in stable plutonic rock of the Canadian Shield (Simmons, 1986). Comprehensive geotechnical research and development activities are being carried out in conjunction with excavation? and construction of the underground facilities.

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the ?fire door? type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they are required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in "Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self -Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brake s II by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. A computer program has been developed by Newmont Exploration to convert mineralogic data by XRD into rock type and ore type classifications. This method has proven useful in identifying lithology from cuttings samples, where percussion drilling was an alternative to expensive core drilling. Computer printouts of rock type and ore type identifications can be generated simultaneously with mineralogic analyses, resulting in a considerable time savings in manual calculation. XRD-computer logging was first applied to the Carlin mine in north central Nevada, and later to the Maggie Creek and Gold Quarry gold deposits, southeast of the Carlin mine. Impure Paleozoic limestones of the "lower plate" Roberts Mountain Formation and the "upper plate" transitional facies have been decarbonatized to altered siltstones and shaley units along vertical faults and permeable stratiform horizons. Advanced stages of decarbonatization were accompanied by silicification. Quantitative XRD data are initially sorted into principal rock type units (limestones, siltstones, dolostones, shales) based on major mineralogic components (calcite, quartz, dolomite, clays). On the basis of relative amounts of less major constituents, descriptive subclassifications (dolomitic limestones, dolomitic siltstones, argillaceous cherts) are made. XRD lithologic data provide assistance in correlating lithologic units, and delineating favorable replacement horizons associated with gold mineralization.

"Abstract This paper shows that a raft alone is not sufficiently appropriate to address the uncertainty of underlying soil variability; therefore, a piled raft system is a better option for mitigating such uncertainty. To study the variability of soil, the behavior of the Piled-Raft Foundation was analyzed with a type of self-drilling micropiles: the ""Alluvial Anker"" (common name for this pile type in Brasilia city). These micropiles have been used in the city and have the advantage that the drill pipe also serves as reinforcement. The studied parameters belong to an elastoplastic constitutive model for strain-stress analysis of soil; variability of these parameters can be intrinsic and/or epistemic. Simulations were performed for a hypothetical Piled-Raft Foundation subjected to vertical loading using the random finite element method. The average parameters of the constitutive model were obtained through laboratory tests. The simulations of the load test were compared with results of a real scale experimental test conducted exclusively for this work in the field. It is analyzed the relative importance of the variability of some geomechanical parameters and their variation with depth is considered. In addition, it is discussed a comparison between the uncertainty of the geomechanical parameters and the uncertainty of the results of the vertical loading test. Finally, this paper shows that a decrease of the safety factor may occur when taking into account the variability of the parameters.IntroductionBrasilia is located in a highly weathered residual tropical soil (lateritic & latossol on pedogenetic concepts). This soil presents high content of alumina and iron due to the lixiviation process of the upper layers. As a consequence, the cemented structure is highly unstable and it can generate strong changes of volume (i.e. collapse) due to changes in both moisture and state of stresses. Therefore, a greater understanding of the construction of Piled-Raft Foundation systems on this particular soil conditions is needed – especially because it covers more than 80% of the surface area of the Brazilian Federal District.Thereafter, this work investigates the influence of the variability of the soil parameters over the uncertainty of the Piled-Raft Foundation design. The studied parameters belong to an elastoplastic constitutive model for strain-stress analysis of soils. The simulations were performed for two hypothetical Piled-Raft Foundations subjected to vertical loading by using the stochastic finite element method. The results were compared to real load tests in Piled-Rafts with “Alluvial Anker” pile types."

SABC circuits have gained widespread attention within China, and are being gradually applied to many mines. However, the domestic knowledge of comminution process is still relatively basic, and the design and production management of the application of SABC technology lack guidance of scientific theories. This research project focuses on the Phase I SABC milling circuits of Wu Shan Porphyry copper mine. Targeting the design and operation problems of existing process and circuit, and without increased investment and alterations in equipment, the new technologies will combine ordinary crushing and grinding theories as theoretical guidance, and borrow JK Simulation Software (JKSimMet) for analysis in order to optimize the comminution process, efficiently allocate production output and energy consumption, eventually resulting in increased production and energy efficiency. Using JKSimMet Simulation Software, and combining theoretical optimizing and practical production techniques, as well as the on-site situation, the eventual SABC comminution process and circuit optimization plan is: increasing the grinding Ball charge from 8% to 10% v/v in the SAG mill; Setting the Ball charge in the Ball mill to 27% v/v and the maximum operating power draw to 5 800kW; replacing the HP Series crusher with a TRIO TC84 crusher, which is without a power controller, and adding a pebble bin. The final optimization result is: Maximum system processing capacity increased between 20%-26.7%, specific energy consumption reduced by more 2.0 kWh/t, creating an economic benefit of over 300 million RMB, thus achieving the goal of increased production, reduced energy consumption, and improved profitability.

The Top Submerged Lance (TSL) technology has obtained significant importance in the pyrometallurgy industry for nearly four decades. One of the advantages of TSL furnace is its high reaction rate, which is caused by splashing and turbulence of the melt. In contradiction, this phenomenon stands as a barrier for conducting experimental investigations to validate the simulation models. The highly turbulent and splashing environment in the TSL furnace is caused due to the immersion of the lance into the slag layer and thus the effect of the flame structure is directly related to the splashing, turbulence, reaction kinetics and life-span of the lance. Moreover, the material properties such as viscosity, density and the surface tension will also influence the flame structure. As a first step to understand the flame structure, attempts are made to generate a stable flame of the lance in an open environment. INTRODUCTION Top Submerged Lance (TSL) technology was invented during the 1970s at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia by Floyd and Denholm. This technology was later commercialised and currently, there are about 100 TSL plants around the world commissioned by various licence holders such as AUSMELT (Outotec) and ISASMELT (Xstrata- Glencore Technology). Copper is the most produced non-ferrous metal followed by lead and zinc, see Hunt (2005). Today, a wide range of primary, secondary, and complex recycling materials are used as a feed material in the TSL, Alvear et al. (2010), Kaye et al. (2008). The working principle of TSL technology lies on inserting and submerging a lance from the top of a vertical cylindrical chamber into the slag layer. The lance is considered as the heart of the furnace, where the air and fuel are transported through two concentric tubes and are mixed in a combustion chamber, which is approximately 7 cm from the tip of the lance (considering the pilot-scale TSL furnace at the Institute for Nonferrous Metallurgy and Purest Materials - INEMET). The TSL furnace is very flexible with the type of fuel, feed material and the air input. The fuel can be natural gas/heating oil/fine coal particles and the air could be enriched with oxygen (Figure 1). The general mechanism of the TSL furnace lies on feeding the material from the top of the furnace and the material is pulled into the molten bath due to the high turbulent atmosphere, which results in high reaction rates. The thermocouples installed in the furnace (i.e. in the ceramic linings) allow the operator to know the temperature of the melt. For example, in the case of copper production the tapped material (i.e. matte/metal) can be transported to a settler for further processing or directly used.

This describes a highly concentrated mining system consisting of a series of short faces arranged to get complete recovery of coal with the maximum protection for the men and equipment. A series of conveyors collect the coal from eight faces and discharge into mine cars at a central loading point on a main haulageway. The conveyor is sectional and, by a multiple-drive arrangement, the same standard parts are used to construct a unit of any length. THE. This paper deals with the third phase of on extensive research on coal-mine ventilation factors. A comprehensive report of the entire work is in course of preparation, but abstracts of the various chapters are being prepared in order to make the results public as rapidly as possible. Parts I and II of this paper were issued Serial 2621 and Serial 2647 of the Bureau of Mines in July and October, 1924. They dealt with the resistance of unobstructed entry and the resistance caused by mine cars in untimbered entry. Description of the Tests After the resistance of unobstructed entry and of mine cars in untimbered entry had been determined by tests in the Experimental Mine, three different types of timbering were installed in the test section and the increased resistance caused by the timbering was determined.

"A flue gas recirculation (FGR) system for a combustion fired aluminum melting furnace is experimentally investigated. The FGR system flows combustion air in a turbulent jet within the flue gas stream, and the turbulent jet flow is collected in a tube at a distance from the jet exit. Entrainment of the flue gases as well as heat transfer between the flue gases and the jet occurs over the length of the exposed jet. Heat transfer between the flue gases and the jet, and the amount of flue gas entrained into the jet (derived from temperature, flow rate and oxygen fraction measurements) were measured as a function of nozzle exit velocity and the distance between the nozzle exit and collection tube. In addition to flue gas entrainment, a fuel savings of up to 7%, due to heat transfer over the length of the jet, was projected from the measurements obtained.IntroductionFlue gas recirculation can be applied to aluminum melting furnaces to control combustion temperature. When coupled with a device to improve furnace efficiency by recovering heat from the furnace exhaust, flue gas recirculation provides a control technique that is integral to achieving the goals of reducing fuel consumption, increasing product yield, increasing the longevity of infrastructure, and reducing pollutant emissions. In particular, combustion temperature control can help reduce reactivity of the products of combustion with the molten metal surface and furnace refractory materials. Combustion temperature control can also help improve the life of heat exchangers used to recover energy lost to the environment in the flue gases, and reduce NOx formation in the combustion process. Flue gas recirculation can also dilute oxygen used in oxy-fuel combustion to reduce reactivity.Flue gas recirculation has been used since the 1970s to control flame temperatures in the automotive industry [1-3] and has successfully reduced NOx emissions. Many different flue gas recirculation approaches for high temperature melting such as melting aluminum and glass have been patented since the 1980s [4-12]. There has also been academic interest to determine the fundamental performance characteristics of flue gas recirculation in high temperature furnaces and in combustion [13-15]."

Conflicts are common in the mining industry. Engineers are accustomed to addressing issues such as land use, air and water pollution, and health and safety. Although conflicts of interest are important in the industry, they do not have the impact on organizational decision making that controversy does. Controversy is a type of conflict, probably the most important type, for effective decision making and competent problem solving. It exists when one person's ideas, information, preference, choices, conclusions, theories, opinions, or perspectives are incompatible with another's and the two seek to reach an agreement (Johnson and Johnson, 1979). Interpersonal and intergroup controversy is prevalent in the day-to-day functioning of organizations. If constructively managed, this type of controversy has important implications for effective decision making and problem solving. Too few organizational members accept controversy, and almost none attempt to stimulate it. This is because too few of them understand controversy well enough to accept and use it effectively. Most organizational personnel lack the interpersonal skills needed to stimulate controversy and manage it effectively. Discussion of conflicting ideas may not be common in problem solving situations due to the fear and anxiety most people feel in conflict situations. Traditionally, organizations suppressed conflict. They believed it was avoidable, caused by management errors. Optimal organizational performance required its removal. Conflict, though, is inevitable. And optimal organizational performance requires a moderate level of conflict. Management should manage the level of conflict and its resolution, for optimal performance. The current view stresses the importance of controversy for learning. Confronting a person with a different point of view stimulates that person to gather more information to elaborate, justify, or provide rationale for their position. Controversy: Process and Outcomes The decision making process begins with participants categorizing and organizing current information and experiences so that a conclusion is derived. When participants present their conclusions to another group and realize their conclusions are being challenged, a state of internal conceptual conflict or uncertainty ensues. This uncertainty motivates the challenged group to actively search for more information, experiences, and a more adequate cognitive perspective and reasoning process to resolve the uncertainty. Participants will adapt their cognitive perspective and reasoning through understanding the perspective and reasoning of others to derive a new or reorganized conclusion. This process may be repeated several times before a decision is reached. The active search for additional information on the alternatives is also promoted, along with greater mastery and retention of information and a more accurate understanding of opposing viewpoints (perspective taking). Of the many positive outcomes of the use of controversy, the effect on higher level cognitive reasoning and processing is especially important in engineering decision making. Research has been done on expert-novice difference in medical diagnoses, physics problem solving, and geological exploration. It shows that preparation for verbal interaction and the actual verbal interaction with peers with differing view-points promotes the development of expertise. Constructive Controversy Conditions Some controversies among decision makers concerning their preferred solutions to a problem can be beneficial. But sometimes they are not. As with all types of conflict, the potential for either constructive or destructive outcomes is present. Whether the consequences are positive or negative depends on the controversy and the way it is managed. The conditions and procedures of controversy management that determine the outcome include: the goal structure within which the controversy occurs; the degree of heterogeneity of decision makers; the amount of relevant information distributed among decision makers; the ability of decision makers to disagree with each other without creating defensiveness; and the perspectivetaking skills of the decision makers. UNTIL a comparatively few years ago, interest in tantalum was limited almost wholly to its scientific investigation, but its extreme resistance to the action of even the strong mineral acids, its great avidity for the common gases, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, and its capacity for transforming alternating to direct current are winning for it a place in our industrial life. Tantalum is not attacked by any single acid except hydrofluoric, nor is it affected by solutions of alkalies. Aqua regia, which readily dissolves both platinum and gold, has no action on it. This resistance to the common corrosive agents is an outstanding property of tantalum and accounts for many of the applications to which it has been put. When heated, tantalum reacts readily with oxygen and nitrogen and absorbs large volumes of hydrogen, 740 volumes being taken up at a dull red heat. This capacity for absorbing gases is being utilized to an increasing extent in the manufacture of vacuum tubes, in which tantalum is used for the metal parts, especially for grid wire. It is said to be a superior metal for this purpose, particularly in power and sending tubes, because of its low secondary emission. The use of tantalum in the manufacture of electrodes, dishes, spatulas and other laboratory apparatus appears to be fairly steady. There has been some development in its use for dental instruments, surgical tools, pen points, hypodermic needles and acidproof pumps. Recently it has been used in the manufacture of spinnerets for the rayon industry, of nozzles for the manufacture of artificial casings for sausages and of lining for plant equipment.

"La Mine Doyon est une entreprise détenue à parts égales par Cambior Inc. et par Minerais Lac Ltée qui en est l'opérateur. Les statistiques de production au 1"" janvier 1990 indiquent que, depuis le début de son exploitation (1980), 10.3 Mt de minerai d'une teneur moyenne de 5,9 g Au/t ont été usinées. Les réserves sont estimées a 10,4 Mt à une teneur moyenne de 6,6 g Au/t jusqu' à une profondeur de-450m.Trois zones minéralisées sont présentement en exploitation. Ces zones sont caractérisées par la présence de veines de quartz-pyrite accompagnées localement de chalcopyrite. Les roches encaissantes sont les schistes a séricite (zone# 1), les roches volcaniclastiques de composition felsique (zone #2) et intermédiaire (zone #2, zone ouest) ainsi que les roches intrusives appartenant au pluton de Mooshla (zone ouest). Toutes ces roches ont subi un métamorphisme régional dont l'intensité correspond à la limite supérieure du facies schiste vert ( -425°C}.Les zones minéralisées sont situées à I' intérieur des zones de déformation et d'altération les plus intenses. L'étude des structures mineures nous indique que la région a subi plusieurs épisodes de déformation ductile a fragile qui sont antérieurs, contemporains et postérieurs al a minéralisation. L'analyse structurale indique également que la déformation majeure est associée à une importante phase de compression orientée N-S a NNE-SSW.L’ensemble des observations suggère que la minéralisation et I' altération associée sont de type épigénétique. La mise en place du minerai se serait effectuée à la fin de l'épisode principal de métamorphisme et de la déformation."
